Am looking for new opportunities and may possibly get an offer from another O&G company for at least 20k. Told their internal recruiter my bottom line was that and thereafter an interview was arranged. Depending on the job scope may try to negotiate higher. Targeting at least 30% increment. Quite happy in my current working environment and team and the work life balance is good. But not happy with my career progression as not promoted for last 5 years due to lean team size in department despite the significant increase in my responsibilities (there is only me and my boss handling quite large portfolio).
Cognizant of the oil market these past few years so can't complain but now that industry is picking up seems like too good an opportunity to miss. What i know is my current company would likely try to counter-offer me to stay if i resign as i really contribute much to my team but i'm in a dilemma whether to accept if they match the new offer. In my company it seems like the trend is to resign and capable employees would get counter-offered to get a decent and fair salary hike. I know for a fact they will have difficulty finding a replacement able to handle the workload that i have.
Should i stay if counter-offered?
Pros: better pay, used to environment and people i work with, work life balance, people in the company know my abilities and no necessity to prove myself
Cons: Career progression ceiling, Company may prepare succession plan and possibility of being viewed as disloyal, etc.. the usual negative traits that follow a counter-offer
Should i leave?
Pros: better pay, new challenges, new environment, higher potential for career progression
Cons: Unknowns, Restarting career path and build credibility all over again
That is a very good pay at your age. May I know what triggered your move back to Malaysia? How did you negotiate your salary in MYR during that point of time?
My situation is very much like yours now. I am currently working in KL. Getting good pay, but somehow I am feeling I am hitting a bottleneck in terms of my career now.
