For those keeping tab on the iPhone 3G[S] scene, some good news. Remember this link? Before this it shows which country provides unlocked iPhones based on their carriers. Now, it has been updated to include columns on which carrier provides MMS and Internet Tethering as well. I would presume, since these two new columns marks as new updates, the state of "which carrier/country provides unlocked iPhones" are also updated as well, and the list is now updated to include the state of unlocks for the 3G[S] as well.

If that is the case, these following countries are the countries are currently still providing unlocked iPhones to their customers, and presumably the same state of unlocks for the upcoming 3G[S]:-




There are a list of countries whose carrier provides official unlocks for their iPhones even though the initial state of the iPhone is locked, but I wont bother posting those. The process of these unlocks REQUIRES the presence of these iPhones to be within the country which provides these unlocks, and such logistics and planning can throw a lot of the planning off. My targets are the iPhones from countries above because they are more than likely, because of their law, REQUIRES their iPhones to remain unlocked officially.

I went Maxis Centre at Queensbay on Monday to get iPhone 3G or 3Gs because my phone broke and I needed 1 desperately.

Went there and ask 3Gs got or not. Can I get it now. They say need to wait 1 month. I ask them again. They said Apple said only have stock in 1 month. I assume if I book now, I will only get it in 1 month. 18th August shipment is probably reserved for those who prebooked. Maxis probably learned about their mistake of selling to walk-in already. If 1 week, I can wait but more than that is too long for me.

So, I think about 3G and 3Gs and consider my options. I think paying RM500 for compass, speed and RAM is not worth it for me.

Voice Control, video and others I don't think I will use much anyway. Even Camera I don't use much. I only want the apps and tethering.

Compass is very important for Maps and augmented reality in the future but that feature alone is not worth RM500. I'm not a speed freak and RAM is useless since I don't game much.

So, I get my 3G, which comes with 3.0 already. I'm guessing it is same shipment as 3Gs since it is wrapped and untouched.

The service is quite good but when I say I want use with DiGI, they have nothing to say. When they ask why don't try contract or 3Gs, I answered and they said nothing. I want test my DiGi but they said they will only help with Hotlink registration and setup.

Got my iPhone, happy with it and missing none of the 3Gs function and RM500 richer, I went back.

People should consider whether they really need the speed, video, RAM for gaming and voice control before they buy 3Gs blindly. That's my advice. Will probably get the new iPhone next year since I saved RM500. By then, probably got new design and features. 3Gs looked the same so can't impress girls anyway. Don't want to be a geek and say the Apple logo on the 3Gs looked different or show them the compass so they know it is the 3Gs, haha.

iPhone 3G got lots of stock. But they mostly people want 3Gs. If you can afford RM1990, then you can afford RM3490 which I planned to get but not while waiting for 2 weeks to 1 month or even more. Can't really regret not pre-booking because I'm not really sure and my phone haven't broke. Loving the iPhone so far and 8GB is more than enough unless you have lots of videos/songs.

If I understand correctly now the prepaid iPhone simply cannot be pre-ordered anymore. On the other hand Maxis people can also not tell me when they expect the new batch for Hotlink (prepaid) to arrive.

They gave me a number to call to check up on active stock, with also the risk that stocks clear faster then I can get there .

It seems I need to wait at least one month if I want an official unlocked without Maxis contract. I thought about the RM155 iValue plan, but I think data is too low. I don't want to pay RM99 extra for the 3gb data.

I will head back to Maxis Pavilion shortly to ask what other options I have, but I am afraid it will mean I have to wait until all stock related problems have been solved here in Malaysia..

If anybody could advise me on how to get an official unlocked here in Malaysia I would be happy....

The Maxis guy I talked to say can pre-order for me but will take 1 month at least and might be longer. I'm guessing the shipment is every 3 weeks? The only way for you to get a 3Gs is buy 2ndhand from those rich uncles that don't get the iPhone or don't know how to use. 3Gs in the forums will be selling at a higher price since no stock. Either wait or pay higher for it. I think plenty of people are willing to book again and wait 1 month if they can sell for RM2900+ maybe? Haha.

Some improvement on Maxis side, if u dail 1 800 82 1123 there is no. 6 option specific for iPhone related issues

Nola its too depressing already, I've been a Maxis user for almost 15 years already, hearing all those bad comments, looking at how my friends/colleagues/relatives start switching to other telcos made me think.

If it weren't for maxis winning the iphone tender, I would have cross the bridge already.

Sigh guess I'll stick with it for another year or so.

Don't advice me to buyout the phone directly, I don't have much dough with me right now, even if I do I doubt they have sufficient stocks.

As usual, no stock as well. The lady told me that we should expect the stock in 1 month's time. And another problem is that we are no longer able to purchase the iPhone 3GS with hotlink. sad case.. and really unfair to us..

From the website, it seems that it's still possible to purchase the phone via hotlink but pre-booking via hotlink is not possible..

Let's see what happens.. So far as I could see from this forum, none of the maxis centers in Penang & KL have any stock as of right now (both 16GB and 32GB).
I guess the dates most of the people here mentioned is 18th Aug.

Actually I pre-book my unit (16GB) in 1U Machines and suppose to collect it on 8th August. Then two days ago (3rd Aug) I decided to call Machines and ask them whether I can get the phone earlier or not. They said will help me to check out the stock conditions and let me know later. Then later in the evening, someone from 1U Machines called me and told me that I can collect my unit tomorrow (4th Aug) at 7pm.

So I just went and collect the phone the next day And doesn't seems many people in the shop; a housewife was collecting her unit when I arrived there. I get my phone after she is done (Then another guy came and collect his phone... seems like the customer flow is quite steady to me)

I'm not really sure how their inventory system works, but I'm happy that I can get my phone 4 days earlier

Dude, i havent got my free 500mb data, how long did u not get your data. Mine is almost a week now. When I called the maxis shop, they asked me to go to maxis centre...

I bought the iPhone 3G and got my free data 1 hour after register. I wonder why 3Gs doesn't receive it as fast as well?

In my place kuala terengganu, Only got 2 MEP and only 1 MEP bring the i3gs, no maxis center here. paid prebook on 20th july till now still tak dapat... today the MEP just called said the stock will arrive end of this month.

heehehehhe, Stupid maxis dont want to open maxis center here, even kelantan and pahang got one...and called kelantan maxis center all the pre-booked already got their i3gs....

its not the phone brother, its the sim account, 1 forummer did mentioned before maxis got issue with their hotlink iphone registration, where some of the users not properly registered to get the 500MB monthly, consider urself lucky because u dont have such issue, not because ure getting 3G instead of 3GS

will go maxis centre tmr at klcc to fix the free 500mb prob, will let u guys know if it needs any trick . I actually called hotlink hotline (got charged rm3 for calling ) and the guy told me he's gonna send 'report' to their team and will require about 7 working days to acknowledge my problem.

Errmm.. I didn't get any email to say I have the 500mb free data (i'm using iValue1).. does that mean I'm getting charged additionally ? The lady I registered my 3GS said that they will automatically switch to the terms of iValue 1 (I signed up for the Value Plus 50 a couple days to since I needed to register a line).

why dont u check maxis website before replying over here? the iValue 1 does come with 500mb because u have already paid for it indirectly.

based on the few last day posting, what I can deduce is that if I placed a booking at any of the maxis centre, and I've not collect it, chances that it most probably available on 18th Aug onwards, as their email/sms claim.

But if I booked other than maxis centre i.e. machine, I may able to collect it on the agreed date subject to confirmation from the respective outlet.

It's quite weird though as it though there is different stock shipment between different outlet.

I myself booked at the garden maxis centre (via new hotlink) on the 31 Aug and opt to collect it on the 14th Aug. I'll give a call on the 13th later just to check, hoping maxis to honour their agreed date.

I booked mine at a MEP nearby and they told me that they will give me a call when the stock arrive and did not promise me on when will it be. They just told me its about 2 to 3 weeks. Hopefully by 18th Aug they will give me a call.
BTW, i booked mine on 31July but they din accept any deposit from me.

I booked on the 1st day 3gs released. The staffs there were looked exhausted and grumpy. Maybe due to constant customers grunting at them for the day.

When I told them I like to pay for the deposit, they were puzzled as they thought the booking date has already past. But they accept it eventually when I showed then the confirmed printed email I got from maxis, no question asked.

I called to Machines just now, they told me the stock may arrive on 18th Aug, I was like "What!". For your information, i booked on 24 July and paid the deposit on 28th July. you r lucky if you get the phone early than me which I suspect it is common for the people book from Maxis instead of Machines

Anyone have "insider" information on how many stocks coming on 18 aug? Enough to supply all booked people or we who have already BOOKED still need to go camping to grab one?

I'm one of the 'lucky' guy that did not get the 500MB after 4 days from the date I got my 3gs. I sent a complaint email to maxis last 2 days. Today morning I got a sms saying that the 500MB data is activated and a cus rep call me up to apologize and explain the issue. Its working now. (after paying RM5 to test the 3g data)

Just got the 500MB free data today So I waited like, 2 days only

Yesterday I went to KLCC maxis center to ask them to file a report directly into their database regarding the 500MB free data (instead relying on the CS hotline).

Got my iphone todAy i think i am lucky to get the last and not prebook the dealer called me and told me they got one extra i grab it and wrote this w my first iphone simply like it

There's no SMS/email for postpaid. I'm on VP50 plus iData2. When I registered during purchase of the iPhone, I received a printed confirmation which stated "iData2 plan x 12 months" and there was a line which says "Status : Active." I guessed it was effective immediately. Anyway, later when I called 123 to confirm, they said it's normally active immediately.

I think it all depends on your luck. I booked verbally, no online booking for me, on the 16th and paid deposit on the 23rd with Machines. I got my 32gb 3GS at 5:30pm of the 31st. It was not without some drama as the day before and even the morning of the 31st, Machines was calling to say that I shouldn't expect to receive the phone that day but at 5pm they called with good news.

I FINALLY got my 500MB free data sms yesterday night. so that is almost a week of waiting.. (=__=). Got my phone (prepaid plan) on Sat morning and got the 500MB free data now.

Need to call up CS like 5 times and went twice to maxis center to solve this issue.

You just pre-book yesterday? Where did you pre-book from? AFAIK, it is no longer possible to pre-book via hotlink.

I think they allow prebooking for hotlink plan but they prioritize those with ivalue and idata plan. Most prob they have extra they'll give it to hotlink prebookers. THats machines, maxis doesn't allow but some MEP do allow prebookings for hotlink plan just like machines.

You should turn off your 3g whenever you are not using it, you'll get charged for not using alot other applications if u dun turn it off. Besides, if you dun turn off your 3g, your battery will deplete faster.

They will update maxis with your phone no. I assume you already have a hotlink sim card, no?

ya i got hotlink number but just wonder when the stock arrived they dun allow me to purchase with hotlink prepaid. the machines say i can book the iphone for hotlink prepaid

please be informed, the final date for payment of prebooking for batch 1 (start receiving iPhone 3GS) was 24th July. This means you will need to have made payment by 24th. In the booking page, it does mention this condition.

Yes that is absolutely right! I certainly was aware I had to sign that thingy hence other than the fight I picked with the Machines Store Manager at 1U, I haven't started harassing him with calls every 2 hours to ask him when my i3GS will come

Also, for those who are still discussing pick up and collection times, please note your posts will be nuked. We oredi have some forummers complaining the thread's getting v hard to search for stuff and we don't want to continue cluttering it. Don't say you've not been warned!

I pre-book an iPhone on Wednesday last week. Supposed to pick it on Wednesday this week. However, I received the sms and email to pick it up on Friday, less than two days after pre-book.

I went to KLCC and bam! I got my iPhone 5 days earlier :-)

Tried searching for all the threads but cannot find anything relevant. Does anyone have issues with receiving vCards via SMS? It seems to be missing for me, using my iPhone3GS (no JB) on Maxis postpaid. But vCards via MMS no problem. One of my friends says it's known issue but cannot find it anywhere else. Any idea anyone?

I booked on 15th July, paid on 18th and collection date was suppose to be on the 2nd August.

But due to the "shortage", I can only get it on the 18th.

Complained it to Maxis(calls + emails), finally got called and they promised to credit RM100 into my account upon collecting my device.

my iPhone 3G sends vCard ... and automatically calls it MMS. Its on Celcom BTW... if I switch off the MMS feature, then I can send Vcard via SMS...

How about receiving vCards via SMS? I tried using my wife's Nokia phone to send myself a vCard, and confirm nothing will arrive iPhone.

Nope, they are not canceling it. It is just that stocks are scarce right now, therefore they are prioritizing whatever stocks they can get to those customers who will take up their contract by allowing them to pre-book. As for the rest of the non-contract plans, aka prepaid and iData 1, pre-booking is not allowed. You just have to wait for surplus stocks.

I'm currently using unlimited..Is it same kaa Unlimited RM99 with 3GB RM99...itu org maxis kuching kata sama...kalau reach 3GB then will be slow won't charge....Helpdesk kata capped at 3GB then lepas 3GB kena bayar...Mana satu betul? For your case, hard to tell. Assuming they only have one stock left at that moment, and you and another person booked on the same day and location and paid the deposit. The other person opt for contract. To whom will this unit be given to?

do some reading before posting. Those who book havent even get their own set yet thus i think buying through prepaid is not open till they have surplus.

as most of u experiencing the lateness, me on the other hand, had been told to collect my phone 11 days before the collection date.... which i have to decline since i only have the money to collect on the collection day itself....

i think you have problems understanding. retail is when there is ex-stock. so i am saying when there is ex-stock, will the prepaid plan be back on. i am now defining for you. you don't retail when you have no stock on hand. no stock = booking. ex-stock = retail.

i just went back from maxis center at sacc mall, shah alam and sunway maxis center and both prepaid plan confirm disable by them. sadly to say that for non-book customer need to wait for 1 month which is end of September for new batch to arrive as they said.

Thanks dude, thats the answer i need. An exact timeframe ! Better then people who will only quote others saying stuff like surplus stock. Surplus stock can be when nobody already want to buy the phone and it lays there for weeks waiting for a buyer.

i have found a few non maxis affiliated handphone shops who have ex-stock of the 3gs(maxis version) but the prices are raked high. no need contract or prepaid, just buy and go.

guess I should make some update. Currently in KLCC & spoke to maxis & they as confirmed, no pre-booking allowed for non-contracts iPhone. Which means iData1 & Hotlink booking is not possible. The guy told me that with pre-book, you'll have to wait for max 30 days. Now they are smart, no longer provide exact days..

Where are those shops? How much are they selling?

I made full payment RM2490 on my Iphone 3GS 32G Black @Labuan Phone shop(MEP).Should get my Iphone on first week of August...but didn't happen...Maxis didn't kept it promise and did not distribute any 32G Phone to Labuan.....Call Maxis.... can only receive on 18th August...

first time i hearing people pay full amount in advance. Why did u do that anyway? They should only ask for RM200 deposit. Not full amount.

Maybe you can call maxis and ask to talk to a supervisor. It is not right of them to ask for full payment but unable to provide the stock.

With RM2490 for a 32GB, that's obviously a scam.

Even at Switch, that sales assistant told me to pay 500 for the deposit, i din bother to do.

Anyways, i've just called up the MEP where i booked mine at (which they did not accept any deposit from me).
They finally asked me to pay my deposit as i'm the 1st on the list right now.
Booked on 31st July, 16GB white.

hey ppl, just to share my words. I booked my set which is a 16GB on the 2nd of August and on that day itself I went to The Garden's Maxis Centre to enquire more and apparently yea they have stopped taking in orders for those non-contract basis plan due to the high demand and lack of stock.. But i went back to the MEP near my house and paid RM 200, the staff at my place didnt inform me bout not allowing us to purchase the phone on non-contract basis.

It was efficient I can say as my phone arrived the next day... But I only collected it on the 7th of August which is like 5 days later only. I asked if they are still taking in orders for the hotlink plans and iDATA 1 ... They say yea, you can still order no problem. But the time varies la.. =) I hope this helps

Expect them to call me but today i just call to make sure i'm still on the list as i had a feeling that i need to pay the deposit in order for them to get me my phone. So i'll be paying up my deposit tomorrow.
Who knows, maybe they have stock tomorrow and i'm able to collect it on the spot. =)

Oh ouch.. that's kinda long.. cos I got mine after a few days upon booking.. Maybe you can consult samcheengsan from lowyat.. his branch is in PJ SS2 and apparently I guess he has stocks on the 16GB white.. but only one left the last time i was updated...
