Hi, I'm planning to suscribe b.yond this week. Just want to ask. I did check the program listing and found that NatGeo and NatGeo HD have different program?
Also, does it worth the extra RM20? I'm a new suscriber to Astro.
Rumors is that the entire Astro channels are going on HD by June 2010 before World Cup 2010 kicksoff
Rumours...any source regarding this?
I dun think so la coz, if the channel go hd, sure the price up then people will not subscribe..hehe,then but its maybe true oso coz world is towards digital transmission rite..
Hi, I'm not sure if it has been discussed in the old thread, If I'm a new suscriber, the b.yond dish is free if i suscribe for 12 months. Any installation charges? or registration charges? I cant find the cost breakdown in astro webpage. i'M WORRIED ON HIDDEN CHARGES
Also, the RM20 is for 5HD channel depending on the package i suscribe, as they add new channel like Discovery HD, will the RM20 increase?
Reliable sources confirmed most of the channels going on HD sooner between June & Dec 2010. RM50m spent on couple of HD channel rights
Who is the reliable sources? Please give the link at least. If that true, most likely for the channel that already have HD content. But Astro has more channel that still not available in HD, esp local content.
Please bring ESPN HD first la....

4 your information, it was me that updated the Astro B.yond wiki page.. the future channels is only forecast as these two channels are very popular and AXN HD is already available in MEASAT-3A... The channel number is predicted using the formula:
<SD channel number> + 20 = <HD channel number>
eg:
History Channel 555
555 + 20 = 575
History HD Channel 575
I hope it clears up the mess...
Please don't confuse ppl here when the news is NOT confirm.

Please read Astro Byond faq, all info is there except RM10 stamp duty. That is the only hidden charge.

I dun think it's possible to go HD with SD channels. Go HQ, yes, but not HD. Convert from DVB-S1 MPEG-2 to DVB-S2 H264 will improve picture quality by leaps and bounds, but 576i is still not HD no matter how you put it, even if it's upscaled to 720p/1080i on Astro's end.

I think their source is Wikipedia. The uncyclopedia that any troll can use to destroy the lives of thousands of people with just a click of the mouse.
Once you get used to looking up Wikipedia, first thing you do is check their references. If no references then it's probably a crock of bull...

I've got a mate who works at Astro, broadcasting dept.. so i have to keep my mouth ****..
New customers: If you are new to Astro and would like to get the new Astro B.yond Box and subsequently view the high definition channels, you will have to sign up to the current Astro standard definition packages while we process your application for the new Astro B.yond Box.
You will be given the standard definition Astro box, complete with the free standard installation, while waiting for the new Astro B.yond Box. Once the Astro B.yond Box is available, we will call you to arrange for an exchange.
You will receive the Astro B.yond Box, a new smartcard, a new outdoor dish unit (ODU), a new remote control, and HDMI cables free of charge on the condition that you return the other Astro box, remote control, smartcard, ODU and commit to take up the high definition channels at RM20.00 per month for a minimum of 12 months, which will allow you to enjoy the high definition channels of the standard definition channels available on your current subscription.
but it still not confirm rite with supporting link.....am i rite?
RM10 stamp duty is not confirm, but most probably is true. But other info is there Bro, i think you should add Byond faq link in your 1st post (charges, process, etc) or summary of faq. It's ver 3 already, but still have new here doesn't know the process.
I also read on page 1 that the rain issue solved? Cool.....means no more disconnection...now its worth it
It's not 100% solved. Depend on your signal strength during clear day, you may get service interruption during heavy rain. But it is significant improvement. The key thing is: - change to ODU 65 - installer must align the dish properly - change to new cable (some people still use existing cable & still ok)
- change to new cable (some people still use existing cable & still ok)
Depends on when you install the Astro decoder I guess. I see that older installations have slightly thinner wire. My grandparents' place install in 2003, cable looks like normal antenna cable. My house install last year, cable noticeably thicker.
erm, looks like the thread FAQ not complete...erm, guys help me a bit...please show me any info links that i can upload to the 1st page..sorry for inconvinience...

interesting insider info, so astro is going to use all 12 transponders in measat 3A, but I think it is still not enough capacity in measat 3A to braodcast all channels in HD, they can only transmit 5 HD channels per transponder

I guess its upscaling to HD not HD channels cos there are not many HD channels anyway to start with
Astro Beyond seems to be very interesting, but with current price for Sports channel (especially) , its too pricey..im just gonna have to stick with current state for time being before switching..

NO,not so fast. Heavy rain in Klang yesterday, interupted 10min, with new message:'Interuption may due to rain': as if we dont know. i'm using measat signal#18 : 250
yesterday night heavy rain at Subang ... no signal loss at all ! awesome
Hold your horses ! Astro remains a weather detector, no doubts about it i had my blackout two days ago due to very heavy rain. Airplanes should seriously consider Astro for more accurate info Only the codes are gone!

Does it still work under the rain condition? I wonder this could encourage myself to get one..
Thats right too, so then maybe complete HD could be just rumours !

Like I said a dozen times before, If you think about it, it's just not practical to upscale SD to HD. Upscale HD means more bandwidth only on Astro's side and the picture may be no better than the decoder's own built-in upscaler. Couple that with the fact that there's no more than 2 dozen HD channels available in Asia region. Converting to DVB-S2 and H264 completely but maintaining current resolution, on the other hand, does have advantage of reducing bandwidth while improving PQ tremendously, meaning Astro can offer more channels and sharper picture because bandwidth reduce.

US sat providers like Dish and DirecTV charge customers for that function. Hope Astro doesn't.

its on heavy rain rite...if the rain oni a bit, should be no problem la i think
It does not need to be raining at a location for it to be affected by rain, as the signal may pass through precipitation many miles away, as the dish has a look angle.
US sat providers like Dish and DirecTV charge customers for that function. Hope Astro doesn't.
Yeah, hope so. Provided the decoder hardware has the capability to record & current astro max doesn't need to pay additional monthly fee, just need to update the firmware only. But we might not be able to record while watching other channel.
Starhub: - HD5 - Nat Geo HD - Discovery HD - History HD - Sports HD - ASN HD (the channel Astro Supersports HD is leaching off 99% of the time) - HBO HD
Hmmm, looks like Singapore has no ESPN HD after all... Does this channel really exist or did Astro pull the name out of thin air?
Also, where's AXN HD?

Lets not cast too many expectations on ESPN HD it may not be as expected just Wait N See ! Astro assured ESPN HD but remember the schedule could be a surprise or could be a dissappointment. I guess the schedule terms is causing the delay .As it is we have Asian versions and now even malaysian versions so hold on please !

Ok. The channel that ASSP HD is leaching on 99% of the time if they're on-air then.

I'm betting that it's something run from Astro's own transmitter, they just license the name only. Unless we're going to be the first in Asia to get the channel...

AXN HD now in Portogal only.
Then dun need to expect it for now lor. Portugal means that it's only relayed to European satellites. Must wait for a AXN HD Asia. Which is unlikely because we dun even have AXN Beyond after that promo phase. Singapore has it oredi.

Maybe discovery channel more expensive than nat geo, but i prefer discovery than nat geo.
Maybe. But this really show how short term their thinking is. It's more expensive, but will get more people to sign up/upgrade, and they break even faster right?
Or do they still have a decoder shortage problem (which also show how shortsighted they are)? Like the Smart TAG, always out of stock one...

They roll out earlier because they want to break even faster (I think la). Also they want to pioneer HDTV market in Malaysia (TM IPTV schedule to launch in Jan this year, but still not available). Eventhough only 4 channel avaialable & they are not fully prepared in term of installer, but subscribers numbers boom already. Maybe it's commercial issue on Discovery HD & some of other channel, who knows. Remember how desperate Astro to sign an exclusive right when they know MiTV planned to launch their PayTV. Maybe we need competitor to make it more faster.

I heard that PQ of the SD channel become poor when watching astro byond. Is this true? How about the other SD channel, are we till get in 4:3 format or 16:9?
mine show DD also but if i actually go to the rear speaker no sound 1 >< can you try?
ASSP HD's surround no sound one unless the HBO promo comes out, then only u are 'surrounded' or the nice Byond commercial. For Byond commercial, you can hear the leopard roaring only on HD while on SD, i couldn't hear anything or barely.
History HD also no surround but NATGEO HD do carry the surround, and i have to turn down my sub woofer's gain.
But my AVR do have DD sign when i tuned to HD channels.

Regarding 5.1 it totally depends on the programme. it is not a channel setting. Not all programmes on HD channels have 5.1.
How about the other SD channel, are we still get in 4:3 format or 16:9?
yes, still in 4:3 same as its native resolution. btw, you can stretch it to 16:9 which is not recommended or just leave it in 4:3 with pillar box (black bars at left & right)

We do have competitors. Problem is their PQ is even worse than Astro because they're using IPTV and you cannot get good PQ through a 1Mbps stimix line. And IPTV status still huru-hara, so far all ISPs with capping will count IPTV traffic towards the quota. That, and the competitors are not taking the business seriously, only targeting niche market (FineTV? All Malay programming. DeTV? All China/Taiwan channels, will only appeal to Chinese/Taiwanese expats).

So far, I dun see that. SD still looks reasonable. I agree with the other members tho, maybe your eyes used to HD already that suddenly switching to SD will become noticable and irritating.

Hi, I'm not sure if it has been discussed in the old thread,
If i'm not mistaken, astro beyond decoder has 3 output right? (coxial, HDMI, and Composite)
Let say, i want to put the beyond in the living room. using the HDMI cable connect to LCD tv. Then, i use the composite output to connect another tv in my room using RCA cable. This is possible right?
The problem is, i can't change the channel when i am in the room. Is there a device to send the remote control IR signal to the decoder in the living room? Can i use AEM xtra link 2 just to change the channel only? or there is a more simple and cheaper device, such as hidden IR repeater system.

Astro Byond outputs are HDMI, component (YCbCr) and Composite.
Yes, you can use HDMI on LCD TV in living room and composite in another room using RCA and at the same time.
An AEM xtra link 2 should work okay.

Don't forget, byond doesn't have RF output. As AEM using RF signal to transmit video/audio/remote command you need to buy AV to RF converter. CRT tv is better for your 2nd tv. The other thing is byond only have 1 remote, i don't know how to get 2nd remote.

Don't know about AEM, haven't try it. Maybe you can try on your existing decoder by plugging out AEM connector from RF out at astro decoder, if you still can control, it should work. Also you might want to try component (add 2 more cable) instead of composite (if your 2nd tv have component in) as it provide better PQ.

yeah.. component connection from my B.Yond to my LCD still out.. comfirmed is not hardware problem as component b.yond to CRT OK and component connection from DVD player to LCD also ok..
some sort of programing problem between b.yond decoder and my LCD making the picture distort especially in the top half.

"Astro doesn't have the facilities to screen anything 3D yet," a spokesperson from the satellite TV broadcaster said. "But we're slowly changing our production, starting with Astro B.yond. And yes, Malaysia is the first country in Asia to have the World Cup telecast on HD."
Quick question: Does covering the LNB with standard hypermarket plastic bag/plastic candy box can minimize rain fade/increase signal? Aesthetically, the Astro Dish with LNB covered with plastic is so bad....

I don't think so. The issue is the cloud. The cloud is the ones that affect the signal. Not the rain.

that's priceless!
NO, if anything it will weaken the signal reflected off the dish to the LNB.
It's a line of sigth issue not a dish/LNB getting wet issue
um, if you read again, there is NO AXN HD Asia stream. So far only European stream and perhaps only available on satellites covering Europe (or only unique to Portugal by cable and no satellite feed at all). Astro cannot carry because there are no satellite coverage of the stream in Asia. Thus no way of getting it in Asia. If Astro want to carry they have to practically create new channel and run it from their facility (i.e. just license the name, but content all ownself provide. Like what they're apparently going to do with ESPN HD) unless they wait for the Singapore AXN facility to launch the channel in Asia. And given how Astro doesn't even have the complete AXN channel line-up (dun even have AXN Beyond permanently compared to Starhub), I just don't see it happening.

i say no ESPN HD before jan 31st... who wanna bet?
I bet that Astro will launch ESPN HD this weekend Someone in V2.0 saw an advertisement in Astro Magazine stating that Arsenal vs Man U will be available in HD No im not a Man U or Arsenal fan I expect Astro to keep their word and launch ESPN HD on the last day of January. They promised this in December so that people would sign up thinking 1st January 2010 ESPN HD available. But they will have to launch it by 11:59:59pm on 31st January 2010 or they could face massive complaints from Malaysians Just my opinion

It'd be hilarious if that happen. Polis come serbu because thought it's an illegal C-Band dish, only to find it's for Astro
i have a reason to believe that they maybe leasing it frm skysports hd im just guessing/assuming it..
I completely agree with u SkySports do produce their own shows in HD so maybe and hopefully Astro will be leasing from it However, Malaysians fans of EPL , please do not get your hopes so high. Most probably ESPN HD content will be not be the same as u see in normal ESPN. The reason? Not all ESPN programmes are in HD. Yes there will be EPL on ESPN HD but maybe not as much as u wished for. The available EPL HD matches are from SkySports HD and ESPN UK HD. So depends on broadcaster in the UK. Most probably u might get a load of NBA and MLB (Baseball) in HD because ESPN does broadcast them in HD in the US. Someone in V2.0 noted that HD programmes are in different contracts compared to normal programmes. Juz look at ASSP HD right now. Astro are struggling to fill up the programming on HD channel. Not everything on normal ASSP are available in HD such as Carling Cup and WWE Raw.

Well cover wth coke bottle wan is to avoid rain water interferences... probably if we add the bottle at the KNB, signal will increase further from 100% to 200%

From TallJustin's blog, it is acknowledged that the PQ for SD channels over HDMI is lower, and is noted by Astro. A fix will be issued via a software update soon. So good then. http://stinkyfruit.wordpress.com/
Agreed. Only in Malaysia that a satellite provider is allowed to monopolize the market even when mass public complain. Like last time. People complain that service not good. What did MCMC do? Extend Astro's monopoly rights by 5 years. Now we will not see a competing satellite provider in the market until 2025! And even worse, they help Astro by blocking them from bringing in new channels, effectively going against the people's complaints!
I also undertstand from a close source that the amount of chinese and Indian channels is also controlled my MMC,.One Malaysia ! One Provider

Added on January 26, 2010, 3:44 pm ASSP HD's surround no sound one unless the HBO promo comes out, then only u are 'surrounded' or the nice Byond commercial.
Some programs from History HD have 5.1 surround. It's not because of the channel. It's the programs.
ramchyld...not firing u but sometimes sensitive thing should be considered...hehe me just give u the point...please edit the post...tq!!
Ok, removed post content. You want to tell smileguy to delete his post as well?
I apologize again, I made that post out of frustration. I just want BBC Entertainment back, and I guess I'm just upset that the channels with the shows I want is available in Singapore but not in Malaysia. And to make things worse Wikipedia has false information that the channel is already in Malaysia when it's not.

Check the cable. Maybe poor shielding, picking up interference from somewhere. Also try adding a voltage regulator to the TV and byond (and AVR if you have one) power supply. Usually does wonders.

i dont think the cable is the prob...coz.. i'm using it with my dvd player and it works like charm...
Astro should broadcast all the other SD channels in 16:9 format for b.yond subscriber. We can see that most of the TV programme in astro is already in 16:9 format. Such as discovery channel, animal planet but the subtitle and the channel logo is still in the black bars zone. When we zoom the picture using the LCD tv. We are unable to see the subtitle and the channel logo.
This is what ASTRO reply regarding the launch of ESPN HD;
Thank you for your e-mail of 25 January 2010.
We wish to inform you that ESPN HD will be introduced soon. However, the exact launching date will be advertised once it is confirmed via on air promos and our website at www.astro.com.my.
Please note that not all programmes are available or produced in high definition broadcasts at the moment. High definition is still a relatively new and expensive system. Just like the transition from black and white television broadcast to colour television broadcast, it will take a little while more before we get to a stage where all channels are in high definition. Nevertheless, the picture and sound quality of the existing SD channels will be enhanced due to better aspect ratio handling and a direct HDMI connection with the television.
Should you have any other enquiries, kindly contact our Contact Centre at 1300-82-3838 which is operational from 8.00 am to 12.00 midnight daily or email to wecare@astro.com.my.

I started worried that Astro cannot fulfill their promise within this month. Based on above reply, the promo should be advertised if they want to launch at least on 31st Jan. I think they are facing problem regarding broadcasting rights due to this is our own creation channel..just like ASSP HD. They have to select some HD programme to fulfill their schedule, and their struggle to keep interesting line up in ASSP HD. In Singapore, Starhub only create one sport channel in HD. They called "Sport HD" which they are combine EPL, La Liga and few golf programme. So If we have 2 channel, I'm doubt they can fulfill their schedule. Anyway, hope Astro will do everthing and launch it at least on 31st January.

I think starhub has 18 sports channels covering various sports and one full HD channel ASN.
I think starhub has 18 sports channels covering various sports and one full HD channel ASN.
Starhub have 10 sport channel which is not HD including one called Football Channel which can operate another 7 sub channel which broadcast live EPL, so we can watch 5-6 epl matches at one time and this channel are not operate on weekdays. I think Astro will do this same when next season EPL starts due to we have right to broadcast 380match all live. They also have 2 HD sport channel...Sports HD and ASN HD.
We already have agreement with Measat to launch ASN HD channel, but right now just airing their program on ASSP HD. Singapore Starhub already have ASN HD. I wondering why Astro still not launching Goal TV1 & Goal TV2 like Starhub. I have read before that the agreement already reached with the company but until now just a few selected programme in ASSP 1 & 2.

Agreed. Hope they do that and convert everyone to using DVB-S2 and H264. Although if you think about it, it's Discovery that's airing 4:3 with the black bars. If it's Astro's doing the logo will still be inside the picture (this is more visible with BBC News and Australia Network, both channels transmitting SD 16:9, but Astro crop to 4:3. Can sometimes notice logo partially go offscreen, especially since the picture is fullscreen).

noob question. Just got Byond installed. Havent activated yet so cant try. I am using an AVR. I understand that 5.1 DD cannot be transmitted through HDMI. So need to use Coaxial cable. Can I use normal RCA cable or I need to get a Coaxial cable. From what I read the difference is in the quality of the cable only.
Can the normal RCA cable carry 5.1 DD, Anyone know?

Yes, you can use regular RCA cable for Coaxial. I've been doing that for years with a DVD player
Actually tho, TallJustin already posted correction. B.yond does carry 5.1DD through HDMI after all. Just have to make sure your AVR can process 5.1DD audio that's sent through HDMI and not just do a direct passthrough of the HDMI port to TV.

more info update StarHub adds Fox trio
Singaporean pay-TV platform StarHub TV is to add three channels from Fox International Channels to its line-up in February.
Nat Geo Music, Fox and Koran entertainment net Total Variety Network (TVN) will go live on StarHub from February 1, adding to a number of FIC channels already available on the platform.
Fox, which airs US series, will be available on the basic entertainment package. It is currently shown in South- East Asian, Japan and Korea, and worldwide in the Middle East, US, Latin America and Spain.
Nat Geo Music, which profiles musicians and musical cultures, will run on StarHub's Education Upsize package. TVN, which offers a variety of Korean-produced drama, reality and lifestyle shows, will air on the Entertainment Upsize group.
Recent months have seen StarHub grab Malaysia-based Astro All Asia Networks, ITV Global Entertainment's Granada TV and English-language news channel Russia Today for its bespoke channel packages.
Ong Bee Lian, StarHub's VP of home solutions, said: "Our relationship with Fox has built another milestone with the launch of these three new channels. We are delighted that our customers are able to enjoy the fruits of our union. We constantly aim to bring added value to our customers by offering them a wide variety of branded channels, and strengthening our highly acclaimed content from all over the world."
Additionally, Nat Geo Wild will now appear on the basic education package.
I read that RCA might not carry 5.1, is that true?
MIGHT is the correct word to use. It all depends on how the cable is constructed. You can use any cables and just get a RCA jack. The most important question is whether the signal is transmitted successfully. After this, you will be starting the discussion that it does not matter because it is a digital signal, it is either 1 or 0.
All this has been widely discuss in forums all around the world. In the end, it is all about personal choice.
As for my choice, I bought Audioquest VDM-A as my digital coaxial cable. It cost RM110.

Heheh, I used cheapo RM10 cable with two RCA connectors, torn it into half and using only the black one (red one go and do something else with it).
Successfully transferred 5.1DD signal from DVD player to SoundBlaster Extigy...
But I guess, all in all, in the end it's how well the cable is constructed.

Wow..so u mean Football Channel on Star Hub shows all the matches? I think even SkySports in the UK don't have this privilege.. They only show all matches at the same time in the Champions League I really hope Astro does this for EPL next season.. I really hope they dont go and choose the Big Teams and the Big Matches only I wanna see all the teams.. Astro have the capabilities to open up sub or temporary channels.. once or maybe twice a week for temporary channels would be nice

now Uk Sky Tv this weekend launch 3D..but Malaysia this weekend only launch HD only...aiiii...
aiiii what?
Barely anyone in Malaysia have 3D capability HDTV.
It would not be an economically or even commercially viable move to provide 3D service right now when there is only a handful of people have such units.
I've already watched Skysports in HD back in 2006 when i was in London, now Astro is just about to begin the HD era here, which is quite to be honestly, "delayed"..
But its a good effort, i would like to see more of Football Live in HD
dun compare london n malaysia la....its not fair.....that time, plasma and lcd price not affortable....nowadayas, so many people buy plasma n lcd, then astro start hd....busines maaaa

Even if it's available, there will be lack of content for 3D. Remember what happen to IMAX in Times Square.
haha...thats one point...no point make 3d channel but dun have content....maybe like this, just put the 3d film just in any channel....once a week....then who got this technology, sure wait in front of their tv...
Another thing is you need to wear glasses to see 3d effect which for me impractical for in-home use. If you already wear glasses, you need to use contact lens lor...
Funny, TV3 was the first station here to aired tv program on 3D. Like on year 2000 or 2001. Also, TV3 does aired Jaws on 3D that time...
Right, they did. Using red-blue glasses (red-green also works to a certain extent. I watched the movie using a pair of red-green glasses I got from inside a box of Koko Krunch. Relly syok).
Some people claim got headache after watching that movie. If TV3 had went with polarized glasses instead of anaglyph glasses, probably less headache (although to be fair, polarized glasses cost RM50++ a pair compared to anaglyph glasses).
And as I said before, 3D is very possible even now. All Astro have to do is run the 3D images through a image processor to convert from the default 3D system to the polarized system. Problem is that polarized glasses is harder to get here. Anaglyph glasses can get from any 3D comic at any stationery/magazine/book store. Polarized glasses, I dunno if any shop got sell. Probably have to special order.
And actually, before TV3, RTM got air a particular French cartoon which also have 3D, called Bot Master. When the hero shouts out "Lazer time, boys!" the viewers are expected to put on special glasses. Too bad RTM miss the boat for being called "first station to broadcast in 3D" by skimping on marketing. The glasses weren't sold in Malaysia until long after the cartoon ended, and RTM did not advertise the cartoon as 3D at all.

You sure it's not because ASN in turn took the show from ESPN HD in the US (where there's actually a ESPN HD)?

Yes, I recall bought those damn glasses. Part of the reason people bought it was for some sort of charity which I cannot recall what it is. But ultimately it was not a great experience.
There were VERY little content to see (it was shown in a certain time) and 3D Jaws was a headache.
The RM20 is the subscription fee for those HD channels. BTW, it is still free till Apr for those wanna experience HDTV...Berbaloi hor...much better quality than scale downed .mkv blue ray movies
I think if someone claim their thumbdrive/pendrive lit up when inserted into the decoder. Then, we can use it to charge our mobile phones/mp4 that can support USB charging... Haven't try it yet but can someone verify the claim... If I'm right it has already have a purpose, USB charging...

I'm using it to power a USB laptop cooler which in turns is used to cool the decoder Confirm that USB port provides power. Fan is spinning when decoder is on. Hopefully this can get rid of overheating issue.
And the laptop cooler's plug is one of those passthrough USB ports, can daisy chain to hard disk when DVR services start. That is, if I dun cancel the account by 1st Feb...

Installer just came and installed B.yond a few hours ago in my house. After installing took almost 1 hour to activate the smart card. Really impressed with the HD channel quality. Alot of difference, picture quality improved by more then 50%, sound is also much better.
Only thing that i find really funny is the decoder. I find it really ugly and not even a little bit of concept was put to it. Anyway its just a comment. Will upload the decoder picture.

Surprising. These almost never happens. Usually it's either we wait for one year ++ or they form some second-grade in-house channel.

Only suscribe to B.Yond if you have a full hd tv. normal tv no use leh.
HD-Ready 1080i TV good enough. Full HD=1080p. HD-Ready=1080i/720p. B.yond only 1080i output max. You only go for Full HD if you have a PS3, 360, HTPC, Media box or a Blu-Ray player. For broadcast, the standard will be 1080i for the next few years.

Yeah its 1080i, do u think astro can go to 1080p (full hd) ? I think for broadcasting they cant, this is my personal opinion.
Here is the pictures i took. I have personally confirmed the USB port can use for charging. For people who havent seen the decoder/remote, here is yr chance.
The b.yond decoder & remote control
The usb port on the front for the decoder with a usb thumbdrive plugged in, light indicator is ON.
It can work as a phone charger , haha... iphone charging.

... This year's competition also saw an increasing number of younger males aged 10-24 tuning in, with 18% of the demographic watching the action. This represents a 22% increase over the first week of competition for the 2009 Australian Open.
Usually prior to launching a new channel, the particular channel slot already broadcasts promos a few days before. If indeed the channel starts tomorrow, it is very last minute from Astro. Just like Owen's and Rooney's goals against City in the two matches. ARSEnal to go down by two goals.

USB Hard disk. Turns byond into PVR. Because when you record program you need to store the video somewhere. And the byond has no onboard HDD.

Same here. I want Discovery HD as well. But well, as said, majority wins. Their tactic is apparently to tarik all the kaki bola first.
QUOTE(Qash-M @ Jan 29 2010, 09:00 PM)
RTM already did HDTV, Astro channel already in HD, when is Media Prima are going to join?
Media Prima a bit funny case. Dunno why they choose Chinese-Korean DMB-T digital format over European DVB-T that is already deployed by RTM. But because of their decision, existing DVB-T decoder cannot receive their test signal. Only option is to tumpang someone in China or Korea to bring back a DMB-T decoder.
Maybe they'll change their decision in the future... who knows. RTM already changed to transmitting in both systems, although their DMB-T signal only have RTM1 and 2 plus a bunch of radio channels, no Musik Aktif or any of their other DVB-T exclusive channels.
Looks like they're planning to follow South Korea. South Korea currently broadcasting in dual system as well, using ATSC mostly for house receivers and DMB-T mostly for portable/mobile entertainment.

If they increase the sports package fee further more, all the bola fella sure willing to pay one.

For now u can use the usb ports to power usb fan and charge your mobile phone or mp4...
Can't wait for more HD channels
Added on January 29, 2010, 10:00 pmby the way.. in the old thread we can update the decoder with pressing some buttons on the decoder when the decoder is booting. i wonder what the buttons to press??

Can use laptop cooler fan to cool down your Byond since the box have 2 USB ports mah.
Why bother lah guys. Unlike the SD decoder, Byond decoder is the property of Astro. If we discontinue in the future, they will demand that decoder back. If damaged, just report and they will come to repair or replace.
eh, do ESPN HD will be given FOC to all byond subscribers maybe for one weeks for preview purpose...?? I really hope it will be like that because i'm not currently subscribing to sports package...

I think, to get ESPN HD, doesn't need to force software download... just leave your decoder to standby mode... maybe they will start ESPN HD on this midnight...
As I predicted.. Astro keep their word as said in AStro Magazine January issue, they said Arsenal vs Man U in HD.. Malaysians need to be more patient..
Another thing that I guess was that Astro would only show Live matches in ESPN HD that were available on SkySports HD and ESPN uk HD in the UK..
I will post upcoming matches that are available on SkySports HD and ESPN UK that could as expected be Live on ESPN HD.

You don't have to download. Heck, you don't have to leave your decoder in stand by even. I recalled someone here mentioned that for new channels, Byond decoder can receive it not in stand by mode. I was watching as usual just now from 10pm. I checked then, no 832 yet. But at 12am, I checked. At first Ch 832 was labelled as TESTA, And it says you don't subsribe to this channel. I changed to another channel, then tried back 832. Voila, ESPN HD.

Be patient bro..they content in HD is very limited especially in our region here. They are trying to fulfill the schedule. If you see Starhub Singapore, for example...they only have one dedicated Sport HD channel which cater EPL, La Liga and few golf tournamanent, compare to us...ASSP HD & ESPN HD. That why sometimes they are struggle to fill the schedule.

1.Ask the installer to check the signal for you 2.If yur cable is concealed, then use back the existing 3.If is not, change it if the signals is no good. Signal strength should be around 225.

I tried #18 and the signal was at 217-220. But it's locked. Already reboot the decoder. What's next?
you have to press ok...doesn't mattter if it's locked. the ok button should be on the bottom left.if it's not there, switch off and on your decoder and try again.
nope still the same. The AVR detecting a higher vol feed (+4).
Nice receiver. Not many receivers can show DD/DTS metadata.
The History HD channel use the UK feed, at least for Cities Of The Underworld. In the SD version, the host that goes underground always narrates the VO (two different guy hosts). For the HD version, a woman with a British accent narrates the VO. It makes the series feel cheap and lack credibility, since the woman didn't go through the trouble of going underground.
Two things about HDTVs: 1) if your HDTV have a picture mode that can show the full 1080 pixel, use that. Or at least use it to compare how many pixels you are losing out. 2) Calibrate your HDTV to the best of your ability. None of the presets give you the best that your TV can do.
Added on January 30, 2010, 6:34 pmand one nice thing about this ESPN HD is that it is really LIVE if u compared to Star Sports... which is delayed 1-2 minutes of the "live" event.... try changing the channels and see =)

Just got my byond installed yesterday.. and immediately i faced a problem..
BYOND -> HDMI AVR -> HDMI HDTV in living room. BYOND -> Composite AV-RF -> COAX HDTV in bedroom.
With this setup, if i set the audio to Digital Only, i can get DD5.1 from my AVR but no sound on the TV upstairs.
If i set it to Digital and Analog, there's sound on both but i lost the DD5.1 on my AVR.
Any workaround on this?
And did u guys face the problem on the audio level? HD channels the sound is ok with -20db on my AVR, but when i watch SD channels, i need to increase until -10 - -5 on my AVR to get the same loudness..
Now that 5 HD channel are available, Astro now should improve PQ of all SD channel...
why would they? now that espn hd is out, they have used up extra 8Mbps for that channel.... don't think they would be so generous improving PQ on SD channels ..its all about the bling bling... lol

I don't think you can see the scan lines on all channels. None of the SD Learning channels have that. But then again, that's what I mostly watch.

Not that I've seen. If you're in the market for a new receiver, get one with DTS HDMA and Dolby TrueHD. With those receiver (the cheapest is about RM1999), you can use HDMI to deliver DD audio to your receiver and make it act as a HDMI switcher as well.

No. The best you can do is to get a HTiB for the bedroom and split the coax digital into two and hope that the signal doesn't degrade.
Another option is to get a HDMI HTiB and a HDMI splitter.

yes i noticed HD live is 1m + ahead of start sports
Think about it...
Actually, the tennis games are shot in HD, then, after putting some scoreboards etc... the feed is directly go to the ESPN broadcast centre, and beam it to our home (of course the beam had to pass Astro first before it go to our home)...
but...
for SD channels...
the feed had to be cropped from 16:9 to 4:3 first then downscale to 576i by star sports or on-the-spot (to save bandwidth)... then star sports send the feed to astro and broadcasted... i don't know if star sports have transmission delay...
maybe that's why the SD feed is 1 minute slower that HD feed..
Any corrections??

The bandwidth is not the case because all decoders receive the same SD feeds.. what need to be improved is the upscaling performance of the B.yond decoder itself... i will try to compare the PQ of SD decoder VS HD decoder soon... maybe tonight...

If i'm not mistaken, they have those huge fast devices to process all those, i don't know how much delay but wouldnt be that much?
As for the PQ on SD... its just a nominal diff if u try to improve the PQ of SD decoder because... the compressed SD channels are rubbish, and as a well known phrase in the video encoding community: rubbish in rubbish out...

well, it's time for astro to change SD encoder to h.264... according to wiki, 1.5mbps is enough to archive satellite TV quality,,, maybe to change in encoder needs to recall all SD decoders... i don't know if recall all the decoders is cheaper that launching a new satellite...

hmmm.. i think, that's imposibble for astro to change their encoding system to MPEG 4 now because when they change it, only those who are using Byond can get it.... so, it is not fair for subscriber who did not upgrade their system to Byond... and surely, "rusuhan" will be happen.... as u know, normal SD decoder only support MPEG 2 system... but byond can support DVB-S2 and MPEG 4 system....

well, it's time for astro to change SD encoder to h.264... according to wiki, 1.5mbps is enough to archive satellite TV quality,,, maybe to change in encoder needs to recall all SD decoders... i don't know if recall all the decoders is cheaper that launching a new satellite...
yup, 1.5mbps is enough...but do u know how badly compressed is india's big tv went with mpeg-4?... 700kbps as the lowest.... imagine all channels become like that.... lol it will be very ugly indeed... its as good as watching video streaming from the internet already...just a tad bit better

That's why if Astro decided to change to h.264, how much it cost to change all SD decoders... don't know how much is one set of B.yond cost... If Astro want to launch more HD channels in the future, either to launch new satellite OR SD channels use h.264 and change all existing decoders... Sun DTH that partly owned by Astro All Asia Network and SUN group already use h.264/mpeg4 for their system... that's why they can fit 170+ SD channels, see their website for their channel line-up...
if 8mbps of HD channel can fit up to 5 HD channels in one transponder...
8mbps * 5 = 40mbps per transponder
if one SD channels consume 1.5mbps...
26 channels with 1mbps to spare...
26 * 12 MEASAT-3 transponders = 312 SD channels
if astro wants to use all remaining MEASAT-3A transponders:
5 * 6 MEASAT-3A transponders = 30 HD channels...
hm.......

*Both SkySports and ESPN UK have not released the list for Live matches for the month of April and May *SkySports does broadcast Live Champions League in HD but there is no mention of Champions League on ESPN HD from Astro yet
The HD broadcast of the EPL looks better than the La Liga matches on Ch831. I can't put my finger on it but the Spanish matches look like something's not quite right with the picture even though they're undeniably HD. Maybe colour saturation or contrast...
Human nature is always like that, when u are pamper with HD u complain about SD quality, my advice is be patient, n let astro slowly change from SD to more HD channel
this espn hd we have is a new channel launched by espn star itself.... its not direct feed from espn hd uk.... so you can see the programming is rather empty when they dont have any delayed/live matches to show because its too new to them.... still thinking wat to add in lol
Australian Open final in HD was pretty darned good.
Some notes: Bitrate starvation apparent in some shorts. One quick way to check if u settings are clipping whites. Murray's white T-shirt had patterns on the sleeves, collar and back. If ur set contrast is set too high, u will crush whites and lose details. Another is Federer's T-shirt, there were vertical patterns on his T. Again, if u r clipping any of the colour channels u will not see that. There were some shots were the deinterlacing of my set was not stellar but I believe it was a minimal. The prize giving ceremony is a good check if u r crushing blacks. On the MC's jacket, there are also some stripes. If u did not see it, then ur brightness is too low. He was also wearing a white shirt with stripes as well. This is a torture scene for broadcasters, however, there was details in both. The EVP of Kia's jacket was difficult to notice if there were thin stripes.
All in all, good experience watching tennis in HD!

Didn't know that... Anyway, it's MU vs ARSEnal tonight...
Aussie Open has better PQ than BPL. Is that true? Or my eyes playing tricks on me
i think because aussie open has more static scenes, hence more details were able to be shown... compared to BPL... its basically the nature of the sporting event.... more motion, more bitrate needed to maintain the PQ...
Can't wait for F1 live event in HD. Not sure how is the PQ in this fast moving sport in HD
I think the HD quality brought by astro is superb on all channels ...
It's too details that when you watch football, you can see the footprints on the grass so clearly that sometimes look awkward. Oh yeah, those close up brits players and coaches look pretty disgusting haha...
Why isn't espn HD a 24 hour channel? They only seem to show a few programmes randomly throughout the day...
The HD broadcast rights haven't been finalized yet.
Too bad the Grammy's is not in HD. Astro should try to record HD feeds of certain musical events and air it on a channel that can highlight HD PQ and sound.
just get my astro beyond last saturday. picture quality one words to describe, SUPERB. but the HDMI cable quite cheapo, can see sometimes the picture stop for a while. saw astro montly magazine advertise abt monster audio cable, that advertisement also list the bad features of current HDMI cable provided free by astro. i think need to upgrade the HDMI cable liao to see whether really got big different. anyway one things i can sure abt the SD picture quality after upgrade to astro beyond, the picture quality bcome bad. actually previously i not directy connect my astro to tv, i connect this way: 1. Astro to my dvd recorder using S video (with upscale 1080p features) 2. DVD recorder to my Denon AVR 2310 (with video upscale featres also) using HDMI 3. Denon AVR 2310 to my Sony X series LCD (HDMI)
picture quality not bad. but after upgrade to astro beyond, really bad the picture quality. anybody know why?? coz if transfer using HDMI, shd be picture quality much more nicer. i think must be the source problem???
anyway since upgrade to HD, i think i will avoid watching SD channel liao. coz i watch the liverpool vs bolton match in SD channel, really cannot acceptable liao. hope in near future, all the SD channel picture quality must upgrade lah...
1 things to mention, Dolby Digital can be transfer thru HDMI, no need coaxial cable. anyone here know what the new 10 HD channel that will be launch starting April?? Channel that display at the poll above?

To get HD, the b.yond must connect directly to TV by HDMI cable. From the sound of it, the b.yond is connected to DVD-Recorder via composite/component (Astro b.yond has no S-Video), and then upscaled from there. B.yond doesn't do HD through composite (impossible to do HD through composite actually) and for some stupid reason pertaining to copy protection, cannot do HD through component either. You can only get HD if you connect the b.yond by HDMI direct to TV.

Ok. Strange laa. I'm using HDMI and the SD channel PQ actually looks better than the S-Video output of the old Nokia decoder.
but the HDMI cable quite cheapo, can see sometimes the picture stop for a while.
Are you sure it's not your TV or the decoder or your receiver?

The provided HDMI cable actually is capable of transmitting 12bit colour. So I really don't believe it is the cable.
actually previously i connect my old decoder to the dvd recorder (with 1080p upscale) and then to TV using HDMI and the picture quality improve. But since change to new decoder (astro beyond) using same way, the picture quality are not the same. bcome worst for SD channel.

That's fast. On older decoder, it's was like less a hour to get new channel from any package...
can the new decoder using the old satellite dish and cable to watch HD & SD channel?
coz this coming CNY, will be back to hometown in KL. my family astro still the old one. Can i just take my new decoder and plug to my family home and watch HD and SD channel?
if cannot, then cannot watch football liao this CNY. my family only subscribe WLT package only

HD channel cannot? if not mistaken, recently i read some post here stated that when astro installer goto some fella home to install astro beyond, bcoz of out of stock problem on the astro new dish, they just installed it with using old dish and cable, still can watch HD channel.
lol old dish and cable can get HD channel as long the lnb infront of the dish been changed.... just the signal is degraded a little bit... so I'm satisfied Manchester United kick Assengal ass last night.... the PQ was superb huhuhu

sure can, no problem at all, make sure you don't share one dish with 2 decoders
try it yourself, and you will know the real non-bull answer

the only difference between old and new is the dish size, increases from 60cm to 65cm, both are using exactly the same LNB, so you figure out the logical answer

By the way, how to improve the SD picture quality ?
well actually if you read the version 1 of this thread. You can find answer of your question.... They change dish for better signal so old dish still can be used but the LNB must change due to some HD channel is in vertical or horinzontal position of the lnb (new lnb can automatic switch position).... the old lnb only in horizontal position only and can't swith position like the new one.... the old cable can do no problem.... and I'm still picked no 2 for the answer. Hint... I worked in a satellite company....

since day 1 astro used universal LNB, universal means it got voltage switchable horizontal + vertical polarisation, and 22KHz switch for lo frequency of 9750 MHz and 10600MHz
woohoo! It was awesome watching man utd kicking arsenal’s arse..in HD!!! super super PQ. Can watch every single wrinkle on arsene wenger's frowning face! Haha! Syabas Astro b.yond!

anyone can clarify which brother is rite, bro neb or bro zonan4?
wohoooo maybe neb is right all the way huhuhu maybe I'm right I never test it... cyberkoh how about you try it at your family house and tell us the result... btw I try using the smartcard on the old decoder and it never work.... If It's working using old dish and lnb then neb is right.... no harm trying it out i guess....
Astro decision to remove aruna on their package was a very good decision. Aruna only contain indon sinetron (drama) that i feel it was nonsense. Only 'aunty2' watch it and like my uncle family, their indonesia maid watch it.
Can try during CNY balik Kampung..bring back the whole set & check at Hometown..

watching ManUnited thrashed Arsenal in HD in priceless!!!
btw, will champions league shown in HD? checked the schedule in astro website for ESPN HD and no champions league match in it
if you check the schedule for today and tomorrow, there are repeat of the group stages of Champ League...for example tomorrow have game between Liverpool v Fiorentina...so maybe the possibility of showing Champ League knock out stages are high.

we wait this month.. champions league is at the end of this month.. logic does say that ESPN HD will show the Champions League because SkySports feeds ESPN the HD Broadcast..
BUT.. There is one problem though.. ESPN has the tendency to pick Champions League matches involving EPL clubs For example..SkySports show Bayern Munich vs Juventus in HD.. At the smae time Chelsea vs Athletico Madrid in SD ESPN tend to show the SD match because of Chelsea Lets hopE they pickup matches in HD rather than basing it on EPL teams
But my gut does say AC Milan Vs Man U and Chelsea vs Inter Milan Return of Beckham and Mourinho will be in HD!!!

I bet your LNB must be 2003/04 onwards. Anyone using LNB ealier than 2003 ? Still can work?
For the last 13 years Astro has used a real mixture of LNB's and Dishes, some will work for HD (Measat 3a) and some won't.
More importantly the new dish and LNB IN COMBINATION will give a massive signal strength increase, up to 6db from my measurements. In addition, the dual band installation means no splitters or internal wiring should ever be used, this once again may give x4 signal strength.
Measuring signal strength gives a good indication of how much rain drop out you will get, but the carrier to noise reading (which the box does not do) is the real indicator. Anyone using amplifiers will increase signal strength but not carrier to noise ratio, hence your signal is in reality no better!
If anyone on this forum has kept their old dish, old LNB or even worse made the installer use their concealed cable then they have really lost out. If you have not had the full new installation then there will be many time that you will loose picture due to rain and you can't complain to Astro, this is your own doing!
Many of us here are reporting that Astro has "fixed the rain problem", but that is only if you have the new dish, new LNB, new wiring direct to the box! Otherwise you have either been ripped off or you have literally ripped yourself off!
So, please please, no more celebrating that you have "kept your old dish" or "used concealed wiring" or "fitted an amplifier" or "set your entry point". The first three are you losing out because of your own reluctance to get a new install and the second is simply making the box tune to a stronger transponder for the signal strength testing. If you use entry point 18 etc, then entry point 1 is still the same!
Sorry, but I had to clear this up! I really don't want people here losing out and then even worse complaining when it rains!

According to Lyngsat, MEASAT-3 carry History HD and NAT GEO HD.. so it can support HD as long as they enough bandwidth...
Lyngsat is showing the Measat "Contribution Feed" this is not the DTH (Direct to home) signal.
Measat run a business broadcasting channels to other broadcasters in the region, e.g. StarHub, what you are seeing here is those transmissions. The "Contribution Feed" is C-Band and uses totally separate transponders and transmission frequencies.

None of the presets give you the best that your TV can do. fuad
The best way to set up a HDTV is like this:-
1: Make sure the box is 1080i 2: Set all the picture settings to about 60%, contrast, brightness etc. 3: Switch off all picture enhancement, e.g. Motion compensation, pixel plus etc. 4: If you are using anything such as 100Hz or 200Hz, then switch them off. 5: Set all modes to off, e.g. Cool, Warm etc.
Basically you want your TV to do as little to the picture as possible.
6: If you have "overscan" switch it ON, basically this will give you more visible SD picture but you may see the timecode lines at the top (switch overscan off if this annoys you) 7: If you are going to use your remote to control the TV then firstly set the volume of the box to 90% 8: If you are watching in a dark room, reduce the brightness, this makes the black blacker, 40% should do.

I manage to boost my signal from 207 to 217-220.
You HAVE NOT boosted your signal, you are simply measuring a stronger transponder! It's like saying, if you measure the top speed of a Porsche then your Myvi will be faster!

not as sharp as it should for a HD feed, but it is watchable
With all sports channels like ASSHD and ESPNHD the events are received from all round the world, all it takes is for one "hop" to be lower in bandwidth and the viewer will see it. Astro look like they have set up the channel at their end to be of very good quality, the problem starts if a feed coming in to Astro is bad, then we will see it!
From my measurements Astro are broadcasting at 8Mbits/s, this is very good. If one of their feeds is only 6Mbits/s then we will see a picture quality of only 6! This is not Astro's fault, more the quality control of the broadcaster(s) that get the feed to Astro.

yesterday i change my setting to use #18 satellite...signal strength only 244, too bad. anyway still better that original setting, only manage 217..better picture??? i dun think so..whether can watch astro at bad weather, dunno yet coz JB town nowadays shinning all the way
FINALLY!!!! after a long 20 days (14 working days) of waiting.. after all the problems encountered.. after all the screw ups the previous installer did to my account.. after all the kind help given by astro cs assistant name miss latar and all the hard work under the hot blazing the sun done by my astro installer mr chin here in jb MY ASTRO BYOND IS INSTALLED! Up and running activated after only 5 mins!
The HD channels are all superb! I have changed to satellite #18..good 225 signal But i do need some help from others here please..
1.Is the HD and SD channels volume difference still an issue or do i need to do something to fox it?
2. If I set my pic resolution to 1080i, the picture of my SD channels kinds of jerks or have minor stuck2. Its not that bad but it can be seen. If I changed to 720p it will be fine and smooth. Is there any difference to my HD channels if I pick 720p rather than 1080i?
help needed please. thanks

1. Yes, HD channel is louder than SD. it's a known issue, but still dunno if astro really want to fix it. So, just control your tv volume. 2. Just stick with your preference based on judgement from your own eyes. Different people have different preference. If you set to 720p, your tv will display it just it is. If you set to 1080i, your tv will processed it using de-interlaced filter (different tv have different filter & will result in different quality) before display it. If you ask me, i prefer 1080i for full HD tv & 720p for HD ready tv.
Byond native resolution is 1080i mainly, but 720p for sports.
so is the jerking problem related to my tv? im using samsung 42' inch plasma tv.. dunno whether full hd or not huhuhu
Not to say so, but might be. If you didn't notice any different between 1080i/720p on HD channel, better set to 720p as 1080i annoying you on SD channel. Just type your tv model, Google it will help to find the spec.
1 way to check your tv de-interlaced filter, compare PQ between 576i & 576p set on byond, watch normal scene & fast action scene (both must be HD channel) will give you some idea. U need to use HDMI, component/composite only output 576i.

if u watch sport channel more than learning or movie channel, then set at 720p, else 1080i
