Quick question: Does covering the LNB with standard hypermarket plastic bag/plastic candy box can minimize rain fade/increase signal? Aesthetically, the Astro Dish with LNB covered with plastic is so bad....

If you watch ASSP HD with SD feeds upscaled to HD, actually clearer than all SD channels... Astro should improve that quickly...

QUOTE(m_imrun @ Jan 28 2010, 05:08 AM) Astro should broadcast all the other SD channels in 16:9 format for b.yond subscriber. We can see that most of the TV programme in astro is already in 16:9 format. Such as discovery channel, animal planet but the subtitle and the channel logo is still in the black bars zone. When we zoom the picture using the LCD tv. We are unable to see the subtitle and the channel logo. Yes but we also consider the satellites capacity...We wait for another software update to see if any improvements over SD channels |

I think if someone claim their thumbdrive/pendrive lit up when inserted into the decoder. Then, we can use it to charge our mobile phones/mp4 that can support USB charging... Haven't try it yet but can someone verify the claim... If I'm right it has already have a purpose, USB charging...

QUOTE(shakiraa @ Jan 30 2010, 08:36 PM) Think about it...Actually, the tennis games are shot in HD, then, after putting some scoreboards etc... the feed is directly go to the ESPN broadcast centre, and beam it to our home (of course the beam had to pass Astro first before it go to our home)... but... for SD channels... the feed had to be cropped from 16:9 to 4:3 first then downscale to 576i by star sports or on-the-spot (to save bandwidth)... then star sports send the feed to astro and broadcasted... i don't know if star sports have transmission delay... maybe that's why the SD feed is 1 minute slower that HD feed.. Any corrections?? Added on January 30, 2010, 10:41 pm QUOTE(kaspersky-fan @ Jan 30 2010, 10:17 PM) why would they? now that espn hd is out, they have used up extra 8Mbps for that channel.... don't think they would be so generous improving PQ on SD channels ..its all about the bling bling... lol The bandwidth is not the case because all decoders receive the same SD feeds.. what need to be improved is the upscaling performance of the B.yond decoder itself... i will try to compare the PQ of SD decoder VS HD decoder soon... maybe tonight...This post has been edited by azrin_kiko: Jan 30 2010, 10:41 PM |

QUOTE(kaspersky-fan @ Jan 30 2010, 10:54 PM) If i'm not mistaken, they have those huge fast devices to process all those, i don't know how much delay but wouldnt be that much? well, it's time for astro to change SD encoder to h.264... according to wiki, 1.5mbps is enough to archive satellite TV quality,,, maybe to change in encoder needs to recall all SD decoders... i don't know if recall all the decoders is cheaper that launching a new satellite...As for the PQ on SD... its just a nominal diff if u try to improve the PQ of SD decoder because... the compressed SD channels are rubbish, and as a well known phrase in the video encoding community: rubbish in rubbish out... |

QUOTE(AjkR06 @ Jan 30 2010, 11:08 PM) hmmm.. That's why if Astro decided to change to h.264, how much it cost to change all SD decoders... don't know how much is one set of B.yond cost...i think, that's imposibble for astro to change their encoding system to MPEG 4 now because when they change it, only those who are using Byond can get it.... so, it is not fair for subscriber who did not upgrade their system to Byond... and surely, "rusuhan" will be happen.... as u know, normal SD decoder only support MPEG 2 system... but byond can support DVB-S2 and MPEG 4 system.... If Astro want to launch more HD channels in the future, either to launch new satellite OR SD channels use h.264 and change all existing decoders... Sun DTH that partly owned by Astro All Asia Network and SUN group already use h.264/mpeg4 for their system... that's why they can fit 170+ SD channels, see their website for their channel line-up... if 8mbps of HD channel can fit up to 5 HD channels in one transponder... 8mbps * 5 = 40mbps per transponder if one SD channels consume 1.5mbps... 26 channels with 1mbps to spare... 26 * 12 MEASAT-3 transponders = 312 SD channels if astro wants to use all remaining MEASAT-3A transponders: 5 * 6 MEASAT-3A transponders = 30 HD channels... hm....... Added on January 30, 2010, 11:20 pm QUOTE(kaspersky-fan @ Jan 30 2010, 11:16 PM) yup, 1.5mbps is enough...but do u know how badly compressed is india's big tv went with mpeg-4?... 700kbps as the lowest.... imagine all channels become like that.... lol it will be very ugly indeed... its as good as watching video streaming from the internet already...just a tad bit better ok i try to compare 1.5mbps with 700kbps mpeg4 using my comp...This post has been edited by azrin_kiko: Jan 30 2010, 11:31 PM |

QUOTE(AstInst @ Feb 2 2010, 08:57 PM) Personally I really dislike the stretched and upscaled content on HBO HD, the question is what do we all prefer, broadcasters have 3 choices. I prefer choice num. 2... looks natural, but make the pillarbox animated to make it plasma friendly for long runs1. Show any old SD content on a HD channel, this includes stretched 4:3 and really does HD no favours 2. Show pillar boxed SD (black lines either side) (Astro Super Sports HD does this for Ice Hockey I think with channel branded pillars) 3. Show only HD and use HD promos when there is no SD content You have to bear in mind many broadcasters dont have 24x7 HD content, so what should they do 1,2 or 3? Hey, moderators how about a poll? It might give Astro some feedback! |

QUOTE(AstInst @ Feb 2 2010, 09:05 PM) This will never happen, many channel cannot justify the HD transmission cost as their audience is too low! One HD channel = 4 SD channels in terms of the space on the transponder! From what I have read, measured and assumed Astro have 10 transponders on Measat 3 and an assumed 6 on Measat 3a this is space of 80 HD channels, less than they broadcast now! Sure need tons of ringgit to convert....Many channels around the world continue to be SD only. If I remember correctly Astro committed to having the main shows in HD by the end of the year, even that is a tall order. Sky in the UK have had HD for 3 years and have 37 channels in HD and 800 in SD. For Astro to have all channels in HD by the end of the year would be almost impossible, even if they could afford it there is not enough HD content, see previous post on HBO HD! |

Take note that not all local production houses are HD ready yet... so we see pillar boxes more often...
