Nice receiver. Not many receivers can show DD/DTS metadata.

The History HD channel use the UK feed, at least for Cities Of The Underworld. In the SD version, the host that goes underground always narrates the VO (two different guy hosts). For the HD version, a woman with a British accent narrates the VO. It makes the series feel cheap and lack credibility, since the woman didn't go through the trouble of going underground.

Two things about HDTVs:
1) if your HDTV have a picture mode that can show the full 1080 pixel, use that. Or at least use it to compare how many pixels you are losing out.
2) Calibrate your HDTV to the best of your ability. None of the presets give you the best that your TV can do.

i would love to disable the picture overscan function too, but once done, other channels have those annoying white running lines on top of the picture... and dang... my dad will start to make noise lol... so i had to enable it doh.gif

how many seconds is the ESPN HD ahead of Star Sports?
*
i feel that it is approximately 1 minute... i was watching espn hd then when i turned to star sports... wait quite a while before the same scene appears

Now that 5 HD channel are available, Astro now should improve PQ of all SD channel... hmm.gif
*
why would they? now that espn hd is out, they have used up extra 8Mbps for that channel.... don't think they would be so generous improving PQ on SD channels ..its all about the bling bling... lol

Think about it...

Actually, the tennis games are shot in HD,
then, after putting some scoreboards etc...
the feed is directly go to the ESPN broadcast centre, and beam it to our home (of course the beam had to pass Astro first before it go to our home)...

but...

for SD channels...

the feed had to be cropped from 16:9 to 4:3 first then downscale to 576i by star sports or on-the-spot (to save bandwidth)...
then star sports send the feed to astro and broadcasted... i don't know if star sports have transmission delay...

maybe that's why the SD feed is 1 minute slower that HD feed..

Any corrections??

Added on January 30, 2010, 10:41 pm

The bandwidth is not the case because all decoders receive the same SD feeds.. what need to be improved is the upscaling performance of the B.yond decoder itself... i will try to compare the PQ of SD decoder VS HD decoder soon... maybe tonight...
*
If i'm not mistaken, they have those huge fast devices to process all those, i don't know how much delay but wouldnt be that much?

As for the PQ on SD... its just a nominal diff if u try to improve the PQ of SD decoder because... the compressed SD channels are rubbish, and as a well known phrase in the video encoding community: rubbish in rubbish out...

well, it's time for astro to change SD encoder to h.264... according to wiki, 1.5mbps is enough to archive satellite TV quality,,, maybe to change in encoder needs to recall all SD decoders... i don't know if recall all the decoders is cheaper that launching a new satellite...
*
yup, 1.5mbps is enough...but do u know how badly compressed is india's big tv went with mpeg-4?... 700kbps as the lowest.... imagine all channels become like that.... lol it will be very ugly indeed... its as good as watching video streaming from the internet already...just a tad bit better

w00t the match is on.... not enough bitrate for certain parts....

but the great thing is... both SD and HD channels dont have much delay, maybe only 1-2 secs diff lol.... weird eh? lol

but overall its much2 better after you've turned from SD channel for a look...

according to the banner of this website, there is nba all star hd, hopefully

http://tv.espn.co.uk/subscribe/
why our espn hd is different from this espn hd???

http://areyouwatchingthis.com/tv/stations/espnhd
*
this espn hd we have is a new channel launched by espn star itself.... its not direct feed from espn hd uk.... so you can see the programming is rather empty when they dont have any delayed/live matches to show because its too new to them.... still thinking wat to add in lol

Aussie Open has better PQ than BPL.
Is that true? Or my eyes playing tricks on me
*
i think because aussie open has more static scenes, hence more details were able to be shown... compared to BPL... its basically the nature of the sporting event.... more motion, more bitrate needed to maintain the PQ...

yes, i did,
every channel are fine except HBO with the "L" shape border.
*
hbo is that way, being broadcasted with some black bars on all four corners. you dont see it on your right of the screen because astro itself somehow has cropped them. some channels they have the tendency to crop it... i have no idea why. so what ure watching is actually slightly stretched. and if you have picture overscan mode enabled, and still see the border, then you can never solve it, until the station itself adjust the picture by zooming a bit more...

Yes.., For us as user, we can't do anything to improve the PQ for SD Channels... because they, Astro who are responsible for transmitted it.. if the sources are bad, and we as user will get the "bad" PQ...  sad.gif What Astro can do now to improve the PQ for SD channels is maybe first changing their system for all DVD-S2 and use MPEG4 encoding like HD channels, and use 576p instead of 576i that astro currently used now... use progressive scan that is surely are far more better than interlaced scan picture...

But if they do like that, for surely, only those who are using astro byond can receive it, and all astro current normal SD dcoder, will become absolute...

Not entire true mate, if the sources are available in interlaced format(which is pretty much it around the whole world), converting to progressive is silly. You are wasting bandwidth and would eventually get lower picture quality lol. Why would a broadcaster waste bandwidth converting 1 channel to progressive when they can broadcast 2 channels in interlaced format ? lol

woo... f1 now on espn hd... ok la not bad already... its upscaled la... can see its a blurrish... but at least quality is still much better than espn. At least they are making effort for you guys to view F1 in a better quality channel when F1 is still not available in HD... don't need to marah2 them la... lol

it is upscaled and it looks bloody fantastic too

use the back button to ch 813 to see the difference.
*
there a customer just expressed his satisfactory feelings about upscaled F1 in HD lol....

perhaps they should admit the feed is not true hd la, but i'm sure once they are available they would change to better feed.

Astro....Astro...first you made me jump with joy with beyond, and everything was great, but now you blur my other none HD channels and chop off the actors foreheads, and I no longer have options, moreover i still have to pay the same price for "lower quality pictures" on the none HD channels, as well as I have to start pay extra for the HD channels in April. Even got money also unable to convert all the other none HD channels to HD.....what the blooooody helllll!!!!!  now feel cheated cause I have a dam BIG HDMI TV, but i am force to see a smaller screen. GIVE BACK MY OLD DECORDER!!!!!!!!
*
one thing to note: there is no HD channels for other none HD channels yet, even if they do its too costly to convert just yet...
