Nice receiver. Not many receivers can show DD/DTS metadata.

The History HD channel use the UK feed, at least for Cities Of The Underworld. In the SD version, the host that goes underground always narrates the VO (two different guy hosts). For the HD version, a woman with a British accent narrates the VO. It makes the series feel cheap and lack credibility, since the woman didn't go through the trouble of going underground.

Two things about HDTVs:
1) if your HDTV have a picture mode that can show the full 1080 pixel, use that. Or at least use it to compare how many pixels you are losing out.
2) Calibrate your HDTV to the best of your ability. None of the presets give you the best that your TV can do.

how many seconds is the ESPN HD ahead of Star Sports?

Now that 5 HD channel are available, Astro now should improve PQ of all SD channel...

Think about it...

Actually, the tennis games are shot in HD,
then, after putting some scoreboards etc...
the feed is directly go to the ESPN broadcast centre, and beam it to our home (of course the beam had to pass Astro first before it go to our home)...

but...

for SD channels...

the feed had to be cropped from 16:9 to 4:3 first then downscale to 576i by star sports or on-the-spot (to save bandwidth)...
then star sports send the feed to astro and broadcasted... i don't know if star sports have transmission delay...

maybe that's why the SD feed is 1 minute slower that HD feed..

The bandwidth is not the case because all decoders receive the same SD feeds.. what need to be improved is the upscaling performance of the B.yond decoder itself... i will try to compare the PQ of SD decoder VS HD decoder soon... maybe tonight...

well, it's time for astro to change SD encoder to h.264... according to wiki, 1.5mbps is enough to archive satellite TV quality,,, maybe to change in encoder needs to recall all SD decoders... i don't know if recall all the decoders is cheaper that launching a new satellite...

Yes.., For us as user, we can't do anything to improve the PQ for SD Channels... because they, Astro who are responsible for transmitted it.. if the sources are bad, and we as user will get the "bad" PQ...  What Astro can do now to improve the PQ for SD channels is maybe first changing their system for all DVD-S2 and use MPEG4 encoding like HD channels, and use 576p instead of 576i that astro currently used now... use progressive scan that is surely are far more better than interlaced scan picture...

But if they do like that, for surely, only those who are using astro byond can receive it, and all astro current normal SD dcoder, will become absolute...

Astro....Astro...first you made me jump with joy with beyond, and everything was great, but now you blur my other none HD channels and chop off the actors foreheads, and I no longer have options, moreover i still have to pay the same price for "lower quality pictures" on the none HD channels, as well as I have to start pay extra for the HD channels in April. Even got money also unable to convert all the other none HD channels to HD.....what the blooooody helllll!!!!!  now feel cheated cause I have a dam BIG HDMI TV, but i am force to see a smaller screen. GIVE BACK MY OLD DECORDER!!!!!!!!
