As the topic said, i got a macbook white new spec. The webcam sometimes hang and the green light 'on'.

Only way to solve it is to shut down the mac and wait for a while before turning on the mac. It is very troublesome.

I send back to maccity to diagnose and they say no problem at all. i get back my macbook with 'two minor scratch'. sad.gif

Any idea to solve this problem?

Is your MacBook 1.83GHz?

And when the green lights on, you can't use the iSight. Photobooth will report camera off or device not found.

This is a complicated issue, my experience the issue is related to the LVDS cable and or logicboard itself. Do you have issue with firewire/USB ports as well?

macaulai, the problem are most likely hardware related. I have a MacBook that exhibit exact problem. But I sort of found out how to avoid the issue:
- Never operate without power adapter & battery, both must in use.
- Sleep - wake seems to trigger the problem more.
- Shutdown instead of restart.

Other than that you have to send it in for diagnose.

Masamune, Try this in order, only move on if doesn't work:

1) Create a new admin account n try.
2) Re-download combo update from Apple.com/download, then apply the update again.
3) Re-install OSX

I create a new admin account and then what do i do with the old one?
Create the new account and then restart is it?

Anyway..i kept the combo update in my external HDD..
So i just apply right..

Anyway..everything is fine unless i reboot..
So i'm keeping it in sleep mode for the time being..

Just enable "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" under "Security" inside sys pref. Set hot corner to activate screen saver. The next time you move away from your desk, just activate the screen saver by moving your mouse to hot corner(s).

i just read on Gizmodo yesterday that Apple has circulated an internal memo to all service centres to replace hairline cracks on white macbooks regardless of warranty. Would you know if this is worldwide? I have some cracks here and there, tho i really really take care of my MacBook.

All the Mac Laptop does that for a moment when it's preparing the charging. As long as it start charging after a minutes or two it should be fine. If it's not charging at all, bring it to service center or call Apple Care.

Why would Apple bundle the new 24" LED Apple Cinema Display if the MacBook doesn't support it? Try a different cable and adapter and see.

If you need support, please provide more info like:
which model of Mac exactly?
what is the model of accessories you having issue with? in your case name the LCD model.
Also tell us what type of connection you using, VGA? DVI? Dual Link DVI? HDMI?

Okay this was rather ridiculous but I was told by a staff from one of the local retailers (won't be disclosed) that it doesn't support up to 24".

Anyway on with the more specific details:

It's a 24" BenQ LCD monitor which I'm connecting through Mini Display Port to DVI adaptor.. I'm connecting through a single-link Dvi-D. I've tested the LCD on other machines and it works fine (tried connecting with both DVI and VGA). My macbook is the Macbook Aluminium. The issue I'm currently facing is that the LCD is indicating that it is not receiving any signals and my macbook is not able to detect the display. I'm guessing its an issue with my macbook or the display adaptor.

I suggest you try with another screen with the same cable and adaptor. Have you tried that before? Your LCD might not compatible due to some reason. Mini Display port is still new for me. Yet to have much experimental with it, but so far VGA out to projectors seems working fine. Will check with some of my contacts that using one and see any issues.

biggrin.gif May I suggest you bring to the retail you bought it (if it's local). And test their ACD. Apple says MacBook unibody support up to 30" ACD.

If you're in Sg Buloh area, I can meet up with you to test as well.

Can you tell us what type of HDD are they? Brand? Connection you using?
Is your MBP powered by adapter or battery when that happened?

Prompt you to shutdown meaning the gray color screen and everything freeze?

That's Kernel Panic. Run Disk Utility and check if the disk is fine. See if the external drive manufacturer provide softwares to boost cache speed. Manufacturer like WD provide such apps.

At 1st the flashing sleeping light, so i changed 2 brand new 1GB RAM and now no more flashing light but it just does not start. Might it be logic board failure?

So its completely out ?

Tried resetting PMU and those stuff as per in apple site ?. Did you make sure that your rams are attached properly ?

If you have tried all the basic troubleshooting and still can't get it to boot up. Chances are you have messed up something !

dead pixel cannot solve leh. although i heard of ways to making it disappear i can't remember (don't want to give you wrong facts). if ur mb has more than 6 dead pixels mac will exchange 1-1 with you. if 1 or 2 then bear with it coz they dont do exchanges.

You need to have X amount of dead pixels only Apple will honor it for warrant claim.
If 1-2 pixels it doesn't count officially. Unless you "find a way" to make them help you with it.

Hey wei..

I'm still having the same problem..
keyboard and trackpad not working after restart..
After restart i have to either run the combo update again or repair my HD permissions then when i restart can use again..

I did what u said except reinstall OSX..
Cause i dont have the dvd with me..
My cousin already ripped out my OSX DVD and plan to upload to torrent for me to download..
The iso file he ripped can also be used right?

I think it's better to have an actual copy. If he rip it wrong way you will have more trouble than helping it. Did you call AppleCare like I suggested?

You paid so much partly it's for their service, if you don't make use of it, it's a waste. Why so painfully download/upload/burn??? Apple might able to help you out with a solution, talk to them.

i have a macbook pro late 2008 (15.4 and 512) and it experiences random freezes. when i'm on vista 32 (via bootcamp). however there is no problem at all, when i'm with xp.

i have tried two methods, and was wondering if there are other alternatives to these:

1. enter safemode and disable the nvidia (not good for me, as i'm using an external display)

2. use RIVATUNER; a so-called overclocking method (not a fan of this as it will damage the hardware)

any other suggestions? thanks a lot in advance

You have 2 options:
- Wait for apple to release update and hope will remedy the problem.
- Bring to service center and let them ponder on the problem. Most likely won't help unless you get AppleCare agree to let you have a replacement unit.

No, I'm giving you suggestion. Since no one know exactly what went wrong with the MBP and Nvidia chips. Let's hope if they ever decide to replace your unit it's doesn't come with the same problem.

Try formatting in Mac format.

Most casing should work on Mac.
Check if the casing need extra power. Some Mac doesn't deliver enough power on USB ports. So you need to find a way to pump in extra power.

Be sure you keep a backup of the kext and the Mac OS DVD handy when things goes wrong. Also, backup your data. Refer to Masume reply where he got issues with USB kext.

So it's up to you to take the risk or not.
I can't be sure what will happen if you replace it. But I can tell you the kext files are meant to drive each crucial component on your mac.

I once had bad kext and the mac won't boot after grey apple logo.

That's normal, nothing wrong with your keyboard.

Apple allows laptop users to use the Fn (function) key to make double-use of this useful keyset (the F keys). To configure this, open the keyboard and mouse preference pane and uncheck "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". After that, you won't have to use the Fn key to do volume up or other functionality.

Good luck!

Helo,

How to completely turn off the trackpad, since my trackpad - on the click button seems problem rite now, it suddenly click on its own. Physical hardware problem i need to go for repair soon. Im fully using external mouse right now.
Its not the option disable the trackpad when mouse appear that i want, because the problem is when i take off the mouse after class etc and need to connect it back at home, it will conflict with the trackpad as i story above since the click button stuck, i need to plug in and take out external mouse a few time and ketuk2 a bit trackpad before can using it. So i want to completely turn off/disable the trackpad

Don't remember there's a way to disable it over software. But you can plug out the ribbon cable. That will remove your keyboard & power button as well. Best is to replace your top case.

Can anyone help me with Mac OS X installation? I have this Mac OS X from a friend, the problem now is that it has some problems with the OS X and I think I need to reinstall or recover the OS X back to it's original state. And now the real problem is now, I don't know how to install or recover the OS X back and is there any CD/DVD provided? If there is, my friend already lost the CD/DVD. Anyway to recover or install the OS X again without the CD/DVD?? Thanks in advance.

Hi!

Today I was putting my macbook back in my sleeve and bag, after using it all day. I noticed that, when totally vertical, the lid was falling open for about 1 cm. Not far enough to get out of sleep though, luckily!
It's the left top corner of my macbook where the magnet is not working. Is it possible that it has died or something?

I'm having bootcamp today and tomorrow, so I can start working in the macshop thursday, but I'm not "genius" enough to know what it is

Thanks in advance!

My experience, if service center have ready stock (which very unlikely) will take <1 week. If no stock, should be >1 week or more depends on the shipment. Always send to service center, not retailers.

this is tricky, you have try:

backup your entire userfolder/Library/Mail to somewhere safe first

1) backup/move your userfolder/Library/Mail/XXX@hotmail.com@XXXX folder to somewhere else.

try start mail.

2) move your entire userfolder/Library/Mail to somewhere else and try start mail.

Once you got Mail started, you have to re-import or try replacing items from the old Mail folder in batches to see which causing the crash. When you replacing, quit Mail first.

I dont know where i should post this, and if it's at the wrong section please let me know.

Anyway, i updated my one month old macbook earlier today and shut it down after the download and updates. I turn it on a while a go, and used safari, and then, it started beeping, three short and one long beep. kept going on and on.

anyone one how to solve it or at least whats wrong with it? i closed safari and it seem to be fine now. but i read that it might be related to the RAM. Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

1. I have problems with my Macbook's Help feature. Sometimes when I type something in the Search box, it'll freeze and then looks like Help restarts itself. It doesn't affect my Macbook or other programs, it's just annoying coz it doesn't open the Help window at all, it just freezed and then terminated & restarted itself.

2. Another question, if using Macbook on the bed is not good for air circulation, then is there anything I can use to support my Macbook when I'm using it on my bed? Like a notebook cooler for Macbooks or something?

3. Is there any ways to avoid ants from entering my Macbook? They LOVE to walk into the keypad. Is it because of the heat from my Macbook attracting them?

I'm using the new Macbook 13" aluminium body.

Hi peeps,

I have a black macbook that is over a year old. Lately I've discovered that it will not fully charge to 100%...only charges itself to 99%. A press of the battery button on the battery itself shows that all the lights are lit green which I think shows that it is ok. I've also drained the battery and recharge it fully.

Any idea why it does not charge to 100%? Thanks icon_rolleyes.gif

1. Help from which software? OSX itself?

2. Use your imagination & creativity. It can be your books, a board or even a small table. Its funny that you ask this question, no one govern how you use your macbook. Using a cooler definitely it's better if the cooler can effectively reduce heat.

3. No, start cleaning you macbook. It's more like the dirts/stain/food left over that fell into the keyboards are attractive the ants.

2 ways:

1) Open your Mail Preference>Accounts and disable the Hotmail account on those mac you don't want it there.

2) Disable/exclude the sync for Hotmail in your mobileme. But you will lost the Hotmail setting if you want to setup on another mac.

As the title suggest, there is a phantom display on the eMac. There is no plugged in for the display port. So, there is no reason why this should come up.

How to resolve this problem?
I have tried resetting pram, reinstall the OS.
It's 10.3 by the way.

cry.gif Attached Image

Added on July 2, 2009, 2:15 pmIt's giving me problem, as eMac don't support extended screen. So, the screen size on the eMac screen is being adjusted to 640X480. And this had given me a hard time trying to even update the OS as I can't reach the Agree button on the agreement window.

That was my first thought of solution. But, mini vga converter don't just grow on tree.
Anyway, after my thorough, going through the whole morning to check the cause. It turns out that the former designer misplaced the original eMac restore discs. The one I used, was for previous iBook. What a bummer. spent the whole morning just to realise it. Cause I remembered when i check hardware information in my mbp. It used to have a lot more information that just hardware no, rom no. and so on.

My guess would be eMac specific 10.3 restore disc was required.
Searched high and low, and behold, it was under the dusty cupboard where not even mouse would visit.

Problem solved!
Thanks for helping anyway. :DDD

Check if there's any apps running at the background.

Perform a permission repair.

Also check how much free space left.

Yes, i'm still running Tiger.

Previously i've the same brand HDD but only 160gb and it's work well with my iBook and PS3. Decided to buy a 320gb due to my 160gb capacity almost full.

For the first time i connect it to my iBook, it can read but while transferring data suddenly the icon disappear.
Tried to reconnect but it failed to recognized the HDD anymore. Check it at my PS3 only 2 of 5 movie that been transferring is there.

A friend told me that my iBook cannot read it because it is an old model that cannot read bigger HDD.
Is it true? sad.gif

That only affect internal drive and older OS.

I think you have corrupted file directory. Try repair it with tools like Disk Warrior.

I'm a new owner of a Macbook Pro 13" and a few days ago i realised that i cant seem to be able to press Shift+z. both the buttons seem to work independantly and with other buttons (e.g. Shift+r, Command+z). and the even more intriguing this is that i am able to press Shift+Command+z. This may be a stupid question, but is this normal?
And what should i do if it isnt?

Just Contacted them. A service personnel guided me through a restart and he confirmed that the problem isn't intended. In the end he said it was likely a hardware problem and advised me to send my MBP to a service centre. The only problem is there isnt any authorised service centre in Kuching that's on his list... Any one can point me to one in Kuching??

Have any of you encountered this situation before? You turned your mac off, start cleaning it back and front, basically everywhere, flipping it on its back and front and then suddenly you cant turn it ON?

I experienced it before, called up a technician friend of mine and he said maybe my Logicboard gone, but i said noo-lah and asked him whether the keyboard ribbon is the culprit? he said its worth a shot, so i decided to take out the screws,oh btw im using a late 2006 white MB with no warranty, heres a guide for the fainthearted.

I was right, the ribbon was loose, this thing here:

It was loose,i popped it back in, and wahlaa my MB came back to life biggrin.gif

For MacBook Pro with DVI port it's best to use DVI - HDMI converter.
I presume you are using LCD TV. On the TV you connect with HDMI, but the source you change to computer and the resolution will be adjusted accordingly.

On top of the Apple destop, there is a grey line, where Finder, File, Edit, View, etc... are.

Beside the "Apple Logo", I see a dark grey dot. After changing the background picture, it is still there.

Do you guys have it? or is it just me?

Is it a dead pixel? What is it?

If it have soft edges it could be what we call a dark spot. If you see a tiny solid square block is a dead/stuck pixel.

Anyway, both is a defect. Although all brand will have certain policy on LCD defect (ie only certain amount you can claim under warranty), but there's no harm to try calling AppleCare.

They only operate on office hour. Try calling Monday morning.

"Took it back to apple to complain"? Where? Apple Service Center?

How many defect pixels you have? coze I heard if you have 7 defect pixels and above, then they will help you fix / replace another one.

Hi Guys, My late 08 Alu MacBook Pro display screen is blinking or flickering every few minutes. Usually it is only the top half or so of the display that blinks or flickers for a split second. Anyone else having the same problem? Look exactly like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJMuYneBLLE&feature=related

Currently running on OSX version 10.5.7

Please Advice, Thanks

Added on August 1, 2009, 11:52 pmJust double checked.

And the NEW ones..........ALSO HAS THE SAME PROBLEM!!!!  vmad.gif

To make things worst, it is located at the middle of the screen.  doh.gif

All the Apple products have the same problem? or am I being too careful?

Coze I remember me FIRST iPod Video has a dead pixel, and now my FIRST macbook pro has pixel problems too.

Since you just bought your MBP, you should take it back to Epicentre. Check your screen before you leave the counter.
Try to change the wallpaper to solid white colour to check your LCD. Don't worry about the staff and check your macbook pro for scratch and every damn thing you can think of before leaving EPICENTRE. Because after 7 days of your purchase, they won't swap a new MBP for you. Within 7 days, they have to swap a new MBP even with 1 dead pixel.

I learned my lesson. For my new MBP, I checked everything I can at EPICENTRE. After the 7 days, you'll have to bring it to the Apple Service Centre at SS14, PJ.

I did went back to Epi Centre to change for a new one. After changing, I check everything, including scratches and defect pixels.

I saw few small scratches, so I told a guy. You know what he said?

He said there are few scratches on the MBP that I used to exchange too and he can reject my old MBP for exchange. I was like "what the hell"?!

How can you said that to me? I just bought it yesterday and do you think I purposely scratch my own NEW MBP and go for an exchange?!?!

I change it because of defect pixel, but not scratches okay?!?! plus I didn't see any scratches on the MBP

After telling him that there are few scratches, he ask me "what I want now" vmad.gif vmad.gif

And he said Apple uses machines to cut the body of the MBP, therefore there will be few scratches. I was like "what the hell" again vmad.gif

Ok, nvm vmad.gif vmad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

As for defect pixels, he change the wallpaper to white. And I didn't notice any defect pixels. He also helped me check, but he didn't say anything, so I assumed there are no defect pixels.

After went back home, I double check it again and I saw a defect pixel again and it is almost at the middle of the screen

I don't want to go back Epi Centre again and see that guy's face vmad.gif vmad.gif

I'm planning to go to Apple Service Center.

Any idea which Apple Service Center should I go to?

I understand how you feel. If you have to go there again, you may look for the manager (Mr. Rabi).
Not sure whether the Apple service center will swap a new MBP for you or not but can try it here:

He is the one who served me shocking.gif

Are you sure he's the manager? Coze when I swapped my 1st MBP, he checked everything and he said wait for approval. He is the manager right? Why after checking need wait for approval?

After swapping 1st time, can go and swap the 2nd time?

By the way, why Sapura Synergy? Is it good?

Not sure he's a real manager or not. But he introduced himself as a manager to me. Maybe they need approval from apple care before swapping your MBP.

Anyway, you must try to do something before the "7 days" period end. Within that 7 days, you can speak louder than anyone else in Apple. Try call Apple Care Hotline and talk nicely to the operator. The Operator have the authority to swap a new MBP for you even after warranty. So, talk nicely to them.
I can't remember the hotline number but you can make the call from Apple service centre.

Is it 1800 80 3638?

If yes then I already called them up.

The operator ask me to use for 1 month first. If the defect pixel still there, which I know it will, then go back to Epi Centre....................

What should I do now? Wait for 1 month or go and try to swap again? Will they swap for me for the 2nd time?

Because of defect pixel, I feel my MacBook Pro is ugly cry.gif

For me, I wouldn't wait for 1 month. I swap two 17" MBP at Epicentre in 1 day. biggrin.gif But I did it before I even pay them.
Only the 3rd one doesn't have the dirt/dead pixels. Consider lucky because they only have 4 in-stock that day.

I didn't check properly on my first purchase (a 15" MBP) and learn a hard lesson after the seven days period ended.
Epicentre won't entertain me and I have to bring it to the service centre to change the whole LCD. Before they changed it, they still argued that I cause the LCD defect and not covered under warranty. But I challenged them that if they can simulate the same problem without a dent on the screen then I'll quietly go home with my MBP. But in the end, they have to quietly change the LCD for me. sweat.gif
That's why I keep telling you to swap until you get the right one. Epicentre keep telling customer that they'll swap a new MBP if any hardware defect within 7 days of purchase. You still have the right to swap.

Maybe they need to do some paperwork if anyone do swapping. I don't really care if they are happy or not. For me, I'm the customer and my happiness is more important than theirs. biggrin.gif

Maybe Mr. Rabi was not in good mood that day. Try to talk nicely and reasonable to him. Tell him do to the same thing to you. Ask him how he feel if he dug out a few thousand ringgit and expecting some excellent hardware but got a defect one instead?

Good luck.

Went there today.

Mr.Rabi is a technician and he said he called the manager and the manager allows me to swap 1 last time. If it's faulty again, then they can't do anything, but to take it.

Therefore I chose for a refund. biggrin.gif

Save ma a lot of trouble.

Oh, and he claims that it's dust inside the screen but not defect pixel hmm.gif

ps. The first unit I checked was faulty too (with 1 dead pixel). They said will swap till no problem at all otherwise, they do refund too. biggrin.gif ... Luckily for them, the 2nd unit was ok.

Do not use "so called OEM". Power is not something you can afford to cheapskate on. Use at your own risk. I've seen some cases that the so called OEM charger cause haywire.

To be honest, there's no such thing as OEM for Apple products. 3rd party or china imitation is more like it.

Try asking anyone with original battery to loan you a moment to test.

Yeap, it's slow. I did 60GB in about 40mins, FW800 connections. And here's my old IDE RAID-1 FW800 casing:

Check and see if your spotlight is doing indexing or any heavy background apps is running at the same time that keep your drive busy.

Next is to check if there's a Mac drive or booster software from the manufacturer. I now Western Digital have it. Unsure about yours.

"download manager" <-- this one will keep your system busy.

try another transfer after a fresh restart without running anything.

when spotlight indexting u will see a black dot pulsing at the upper right magnifying glass icon. when you click on it, it will says "indexing..."

The damage might already been done the moment you put in the "OEM" battery. So put in a ori battery later on wont solve anything.

Guys, please help. My Macbook is the White Edition just before Aluminium released.

My Mac's fan is so noisy. Plus, my battery icon shows no percentage, or time even though i clicked it. Just an [X]... What does this mean?

Besides, when i want to charge, the indicator shows green in color. Which means its fully charged?

Is this normal? icon_question.gif

It sounds like the battery is gone. You may wanna try to send it to Apple Service Centre or you can always pick up a used battery from LYP.

the AppleCare Protection Plan for notebook computers does not cover batteries that have failed or are exhibiting diminished capacity except when the failure or diminished capacity is the result of a manufacturing defect

I suspect ur batt is dead. Get a new one; if that doesn't work and it still gives u the same issue then it's time to send ur Mac in for checking smile.gif Do it before your AppleCare is up smile.gif

Battery [X] = dead. Unfortunately ACPP does not cover battery. If you buy a new battery you will have one year warrenty for your new unit.

Send your Mac to a service centre for diagnostics ba >.<

im having some difficulties with my imac early 2006 core duo. its running quite hot even when idling, and with little usage it will surge up. idling temps would be around 37 - 41 and with slight usage it will shoot up till 44 - 47. and once it goes up till around 45 - 50 sometimes everything will just hang and i'll have no response whatsoever from my mac and i'll need to reboot with pressing the power button. just did a hardware test on my machine and got this error, i suppose its the fans?

Check your charger grounding.
Bad grounding will cause trackpad issue.

If you using the 3pin plug on your charger brick, change to the long cable 3pin plug.

Your HDD failed or the file system fail. Boot into your Software disc #1 and run Disk Utility to check.

By saying dent I presume yours is the unibody model. There's no way to repair dent. Once on it, it will stay on. This is metal with fine finishing. Any further attempt to "un-dent" it by bending will only cause more deformation. The only way is to replace the case.

I have a macbook pro 13 inch, and was wondering if upgrading the hard disk will void the apple warranty. If it doesn't void the warranty, then is it better to do it a a mac store, or can we just go to any of the shops in lowyat and ask for an upgrade?

Is it advisable to use a faster 7200 rpm disk? The apple store only allowed configuration using 5400 rpm disk or solid state drives.

By officially, end user are not allow to open the MacBook Pro. All parts should be done by certified Apple Technician. But there're many ppl who have DIY the HDD swap. So long you keep the original HDD it should be fine. Should you need to send to 3rd party, make sure they are reliable.

I've done many 7200RPM HDD upgrade for clients. They are all happy with the upgrade.

It seems like your MBP is trying to recover from a deep sleep. I think there are some issue with your filesystem.

Here's something you can try:
- Put in the Software Disc 1 came with your MBP or the retail OSX DVD. Restart by holding "C" with the disc inside. Wait for loading complete. Select the language. Then go to the top menu select Utilities -> Disk Utility. Select your HDD then "Repair Permission".

- Follow the instruction for your model:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

if all those still doesn't fix. You need another mac to do a repair.

That could be many reason. Lack of maintenance is the easiest cause.
Just keep the habit to run Repair Permission once a while. Especially after software update / install.

then maybe you want to try System Preference > Accounts > your user > change password.

If your password is not blank and you can't remember it, you need to insert the DVD and boot from it and choose Reset Password.

Hi Wei, my friend got problem with his newly purchased Macbook Pro 15 inch with SL installed with the new current update. He's been experiencing some lagging when shutting down the MBP. He just bought it and completely untouched, nothing is done to it. Not even a single file is downloaded into it. But he kept bugging me on why his super powerful MBP can show serious lags when shutting down.

It's like when he presses the shutdown button, the dock hides out lagging.. and sometimes, half of the screen got flashed black like some defected LCD unit. We went to Machines KLCC to service, the magsafe port was broken. Then went for repair. When it was back, the issue of lagging is not solved. Then my friend called Apple to force a 1 to 1 exchange. And they did! After the exchange, the currently NEW MBP still experience this shutdown problem!!!

I just want to ask. Is this normal? Is it a bug in SL or is it the Video Driver issue?

He's planning to make another 2nd 1 to 1 exchange...

His MBP specs...

mid 2009
2.8Ghz
4gb RAM
500gb 5400rpm
Mac OSX 10.6.1

Please help me with your Sage advice!!!

First question, is your friend very sure they swap the MBP? As in hand to hand exchange?

Secondly there's an update for Performance Issue just release few days ago. That might help if it hasn't been applied.

Third is to try clean install 10.6. Might want to try 10.5 if its available.

And lastly is to return again till such issue solved. I cant be much help just by reading your info, to troubleshoot needs hands-on. It could be many reason. Factory defects, batch problem, design issue, software issue. But the current MB are known to have SATA issue when just release.

Try reset PRAM & SMC? You can try boot into safe mode by holding shift key.
Your optical drive have problem as well? I wonder why it vomit your OSX DVD.

If you have another Mac you can try firewire target disk mode to recover your files. If you have a PC instead you will have to remove th MB HDD and put it into external casing.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I just want to ask. Is this normal? Is it a bug in SL or is it the Video Driver issue?

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Please help me with your Sage advice!!!
*
Can you check whether the Performance Update 1.0 has been installed? All newer MBP with SL comes with the latest EFI firmware version 1.7. That update 're-enable' the Nvidia chipset SATA to support 300Mbps protocol (SATA2). However it present serious drawbacks to some configuration in that the HDD will intermittently seize and don't respond. The Performance Update 1.0 generally resolves this problem. Maybe this is the reason that is causing the 'slow down' during shut down. SL shuts down in like 1-2 seconds. No fuss at all.

QUOTE(Sevenfold @ Oct 18 2009, 01:16 AM)
My question is if using the cooler pad, will it damage macbook ? since it need to use macbook power from usb to cooler ?
*
It should not damage your MB. The USB ports on the MB are powered and can drive even the most hungry 2.5" external HDD. At least in my case. So I don't think a cooler pad will damage it because its power needs are pretty low. Since the USB port supply a voltage of only 5V. The fans can only spin so fast at 5V (they are usually rated at 12V, but if you run them at lower voltage they turn slower).

If you know what you're doing, you can modify a USB cable to connect straight to the power adapter. Find one 12V@1A old adapter and modify it with the USB cable.

Currently my Superdrive working good condition.

If i take out and put into external drive to backup all the data, can the Mac drive/hardisk being read it in Windows/Linux?

I asked you if you have done PRAM & SMC reset. Does that help?

If you have other Mac OSX DVD try it. Else send your unit to service.

Hey People,

Just a question. I borrowed my sister's ext drive to watch some movies and drag drop some to my Macbook, too. Now her PC, and other PCs i tried, wont mount the thing, and it produces a clicking sound. When i hook it up on my Macbook, it works fine, tho i cant copy anythg INTO it but copying FROM it is ok.

She's hopping mad at me and refuses to lend me anythg anymore!! sad.gif

What gives? How do i undo this? I'm on 10.5.8

Thanx!!

Your mac have insufficient RAM to keep all the rendering on memory. So cache/temp file are written onto your HDD. Add-in more HDD space. They are very cheap now.

Try different player like Plex or XBMC. They have been mentioned in this forum before. Or simply google it. But you shouldn't put much hope on MBA.

You need to re-solder the broken part and protect it (most easy is hot glue).

Since 2007 this white macbook never ever gimme any problems, but until today .. all of sudden when i turn it on its didnt on. LCD flash for a while, i can hear the hardisk and fan working. Only the white led at the right front is on
What is the symptom? Any possibility this mac is going to throw into trash? oh no cry.gif got sentimental value. See the video for the symptom here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Y1nFge7zeE

You're the one who asked for the Leopard disc yes?

Ahhh, do not give up hope just yet. Why don't you try to bring in your MacBook on to the retailer that you bought it from, and ask the technician for further inspection. Your RAM or the LCD cable could be loose.

@imesmtb, a faulty GPU has been thought out to be one of the cause.

But xjukie, sorry i would agree to dvlz, sometimes a faulty GPU would certainly spell out a new laptop.

Enough of this "I think" assumption.
My technical experience tell me that this is not LCD related issue.
It's very likely your logicboard is a goner.

Symptom being:
- LCD dead you will still get a complete boot.
- No chime & steady indicator LED light shows hardware failure.
- Bad RAM will cause 3 chimes and blinking indicator lights.

im very upset with my macbook pro right now sad.gif. need help from u guys... ive talked about this in some posts but so far i havent got a solution yet. i think its best 4 me to tell the whole story.

1. i had a 160gb HDD in my MBP, with leopard 10.5.8 installed.
2. i used Disk Utility to Restore the contents to a new 500gb HDD i bought and then swapped the 500gb into my MBP.
3. from the cloned 10.5.8 copy...i upgraded to snow leopard 10.6, then installed the 10.6.1 update
4. everything was fine, but after a few days, i started to experience hard drive lag. seems like im getting horrible disk read. e.g. when copying files to an external, the transfer freezes a lot, but still continues. but then the freeze would cause the whole system to lag as well.
5. Performance Update 1.0 was released, but after installing it, it doesnt seem to fix anything.
6. i figured that the problem is snow leopard, so i copy my new files (those after the cloning), and erased the 500gb hdd.
7. now this is quite weird but im not sure if its relevant. my plan was to do a fresh install of SL on the 500gb hdd and then transfer my files from the original 160gb hdd (which still contains everything). i inserted the SL DVD (the UTD disk) but i got an error that said Mac OSX cannot be installed on this volume. the 500gb is indeed journaled HFS and GUID partition scheme. this also prevented me from using disk utility to Restore from the old 160gb hdd.
8. so i swapped the 160gb hdd back in and i booted into 10.5.8 with no problems. i launched disk utility (the one in OSX, not on the DVD) and tried to Restore its contents onto the 500gb. It didnt work..i forgot whats the error. So i used SuperDuper! to clone instead and it worked.
9. swapped back, and booted into 10.5.8 on the 500gb. basically im back at #2. however this time i decided to not install SL and the performance update.
10. things were fine, but after a few days, its like in #4 all over again.

***

11. so my first attempt was to boot into the SL DVD and did a Repair Disk. no improvement.
12. booted back into leopard and did a Repair Disk Permission. for some reason this did the trick. the hard drive lag issue was gone, but only for a few hours. when it started to lag again, i did a Repair Disk Permission again, but this time it didnt solve anything.
13. i tried to use time machine to backup my stuff to another 500gb hdd i had. the transfer was very slow as well, and lagging like hell. the thing is, my whole system would lag during the transfer. cancelled it.
14. i used TechTool Deluxe included in my ACPP and did a scan. everything passed, but i skipped the "surface scan". it took too long...after 1 hour it was just around 4%, so i estimate that it would take 25 hours to complete. is this normal?

***

is it possible that i got a faulty 500gb hdd?

what does the Surface Scan do actually? in the 4% there were no errors..its just very slow.

hmm if i were to get a replacement HDD...meaning i need to ask the shop to transfer my stuff from this one to the new one rite? i imagine it'd take forever to do that due to the lag. even transferring to my external was damn slow.

i left my mac on for the transfer for like 5 hours (i went to sleep), woke up to find it only managed to copy 18gb. out of the total 150gb of files i have. before, the cloning took only about 3+ hours for 130gb.

alamak...
apparently the Surface Scan is a test of the condition of the drive. Don't take my word for it, I just spent 10 minutes reading thru...

if you get a replacement drive... i would use Carbon Copy Cloner / SuperDuper! to clone it back in. if it takes a long time... at least you'd have the data ...

I had a similar problem, the 250GB I was using for Time Machine started making clicking noises... so I had to clone around 180GB or so... it took nearly 8 hours... I just left it there and went out, watched a movie, repaired my car... you get the idea smile.gif

i think what i'd do now is copy my 250gb external (2.5") to the other 500gb external (3.5")... then clone my current system on the 250gb (which is my stock hdd...dont ask why i downgraded to 160gb ;p) n just use that for the time being :S. will try to get a replacement 2moro... thanks!

transferring from the 250gb to the external 500gb is fast. both are connected thru USB.

Surface scan is to scan the cluster block by block, therefore it take super long time.
I normally won't do that, it's very taxing for the drive as well as for the Mac for no good reason. If it's already slowing down at such rate, just RMA the drive and get a new one.

Well, a lot of your question are answered by simple google:
http://www.on-linetechnologies.com/directResponseTerms.php#r

Let's say you buy a car and the engine said can go 100km/hr. But yours only goes 50km/hr or less. Will you wait for you car died only send to claim or claim immediately without wait is entirely up to you. But my young nephew can tell me the answer without posting on forum.

My 15" macbook pro is out of warranty and my charger stopped functioning anymore, and it was confirmed that it is the charger that is broken. I went to Machines and they said that the repair would cost the same as buying a new one which is at RM319 in which that i can't afford that. So my options are

-buy a second hand/cheaper charger which i have no idea where to find

-repair the charger, but i also don't know where to send it to because it's Mac.

so if you guys could offer me tips or any help it would be appreciated, thanks.

Hye all mac sifus and fans..

I own a macbook 13" wif Intel C2D in it..

I've used it very lightly until recently i increase the usage to that laptop because i have to do some photoshop work with it..

but to my surprise.. the battery pack spoils very fast eventhough the battery pack is expansive(about Rm600 if im not mistaken)..

believe it or not i've got my battery replaced 3 times already since i bought it on december 2007 and lucky me it is still in warranty..

just now i was leaving my macbook on while i went out and fetch something and when i return and check on it i cant see a light(usualy green or red) on the charger's head..all of a sudden my charger fails to work and i dont even know if the port on my macbook or the charger itself spoiled..

i know if i send it to mac service centers it would cost me a fortune and a long time to get it fixed..

so i would like to ask all the mac sifus and fans out there if its possible to check if its the charger's fault or the port's fault myself..

and also which service centers would you prefer to send your mac to?(coz there are so many authorised resellers and service centeres)

if it is possible pls tell me if i can get any 2nd hand charger in lowyat as well..

thanks a million..

*edit*
just checked the prices..

RM319 for a god damn charger.. ~___~
RM559 for a battery pack

now im afraid that if i buy one it wont last long and i have to buy another one..

if i dont repair it i'll have another RM4000 piece of junk in my house lol..

oh well..guess i have no choice do i..

this is probably the last product i'll ever buy from mac apple..no more for me..coz the stuffs just spoils fast..unlike my old F-Tec which is still 99/100 kickin' right now lol..

sigh i am very dissapointed with mac..expansive things that tends to spoil fast.. are they blood suckers or what?

I've just posted a topic on battery & charger. You might want to check that.
To your question it's easy, you can bring your mac and charger to any nearby Apple Reseller. Ask to use their charger there, if your MacBook charging fine with the charger there. Means your MacBook is fine, only the charger is faulty.

Sometime it's luck that some owner bought a defective unit. Sometime it's also the user's using habit that cause damage to the unit/ causing parts dying fast. We have many client, most of them are happy Mac-er.

But there are no 100% for everything in real life, if you think Apple doesn't fit to earn your money, you should rethink about what to buy next. There are a lot of buyer in the forum alone if you don't want to keep your MacBook.

1. You can set your app to remember your login info and auto connect when Internet available.
2. Keep your mac awake.

Mac OSX are designed to disconnect all connected device and network when goes to sleep.

Dear All,

Just wondering anybody know how to format an iBook G4? I was helping my friend to format his iBook without original CD. I've downloaded Mac OS 10.3 Panther, 4 CD's.
My problem is when I turn it ON, press C while it booting up, apple logo shows up, and I can hear the CD spinning, but after a long wait, nothing happen, only apple logo appears..

Can anybody help me on this...

Do not ask for warez here.
You should burn the disc from Mac.

If it's under warranty call up Applecare first, sometimes they deal better than the service centres.

try download the last Mac OSX update from Apple.com/download/
and apply the update again. Else you can try create a new admin user and try on it.
This is the normal procedure I would suggest user to do.

Which model is your keyboard?
You can try to ply off key by key carefully. Remember not to break any plastic tab. Then use clothe to clean.

I would suggest you sell the unit as it is to end user, you will get a better offer that way. Only consider trade-in if your unit is faulty or desperate and don't care loosing money.

You could always check with Machines on their Trade In Trade Up scheme to see how much they're willing to pay for your machine.

It's an aluminum keyboard. Now the alpha "N" button is not responding. It's now at Machines and they said the repair will cost as much as a new keyboard. So I decided to try my luck fixing it myself. Will try to search online for guides on how to ply off the keys (or Wei do you have any links on how to do that?).

Hope that can save my "N" button...

by the way, thanks you wei

The reason to do the update again is to re-apply the same update again to refresh the system in-case something went corrupted or misplaced. I know your mac is always up-to-date...

Anyway,
my friend told me that we can actually replace our macbook/ macbook pro's superdrive with internal 2.5 SATA HDD Docking.
Based on research,
The Most Talkabout hardware for that is MCE OptiBay.

Take a look at this, it's a cheaper alternative to the Optibay
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=680228&page=19

You do realise you will void your machine's warranty if you replace the optical drive. Something you might want to consider...

I'm not sure it that will fit since some these adaptors come with additional plastic trims that you will have to get rid off or not it won't fit in the MBP.

Read up on the link I posted earlier. The adaptors on eBay are much cheaper and removing the plastic trim doesn't seem very difficult.

I've done that on iBook G4, PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro 15", MacBook White. You doesn't need to spend on the overpriced Optibay, just get those on eBay. I can't be sure will the IBM type fit. Pay attention to the height of newer unibody models as they might not fit.

Your Mac should read 3GB if the RAM is installed properly and compatible.

What's the point of getting the RAM when it's not in use.

Theoretically it works. But performance wise it's a question on what type of RAM you adding.
The best thing is to goes identical for less latency and allowing dual/quad channel when possible.

I'm using the latest non-unibody MBPro with Geforce 8600m GT, not the one with ATI which still with IDE/PATA.

Hey guys, the superdrive in my Macbook (white) of two years is starting to fail. It can still detect the disk but it will stop running after a while, especially during long installations. It sounds weak to a point and at some point, there will be a *thack*-ing sound coming out.

Could you give me some idea of what it is?

And if I have to change the drive, could you tell me which superdrives (DVD) should I be looking at and how to change it? Don't have enough cash to get it done in the workshop. I'm in Melb right now and the labour cost is really high.

The assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I tried connecting a mbp to a Philips 23" LCD Monitor via the DVI cable. However, following the instructions menu that pop up, saying to adjust the contrast or brightness to max on the external LCD, then adjust, the graphics are just somehow rather weird in terms of color. so may i ask how do u guys do the settings on the mbp? i also notice that both the external LCD and the one on mbp both shows the similar image, how can i disable the one on mbp so that it only show on the external LCD?

back then when i was using Dell XPS, it was so much easier, all i need was to connect via HDMI, and the graphics are so nice, but using this mbp... maybe i dunno how to do the setting.... can anyone advise? thanks

BTW, what menu asked you to adjust the contrast and brightness to max????
Did you do a calibration under Color tab????

This morning my mom's MacBook white (lowest spec, bought 1 year + ago) met with this weird casualty. Part of the keyboard seems to malfunction, but only the letter A until the letter L. The other buttons in the same row like Caps Lock are working fine. Just the letter buttons.

Any idea what could be holding this up other than hardware problem?

Just send it in, show the tech the photo. There should be some issue with:
A) LVDS cable.
B) LCD panel. or
C) Logicboard.

there's an app called Onyx that kinda cleans up ur Mac...but i dont use it anymore..doesnt seem to give me any benefits tongue.gif. there's no such thing as registry in OSX so u dun have 2 worry about that. actually u dont have to worry abt anything... OSX is pretty smart in keeping itself in good condition (e.g. auto defrag).

yes disk utility is only for disks. the one in OSX is normally to fix external drives though. u'll need the one on the OSX DVD to fix internal drive (or another mac)

Put in the Software DVD 1, restart holding "D", and run the test.
If it failed at Fan test then yes, its time to replace your fan.

Yeah send back to me if you can, I won't charge you for the installation, just the fan. Your fan is not in good shape to begin with, that's why it vibrate (uneven rotation).

Try restart, holding "option". Once you see your HDD icon start pressing eject key repeatly.
If the disc still stuck. Your optical drive bay might be mis-aligned or deformed due to the fall.

Hi guys,

I hope I can find answer to this small issue. At home I connect my Macbook Pro 13 to my PC desktop and share folders and drivers using SMB://Computer Name. The problem is when my Macbook goes to sleep and wake up I lose the connection to my desktop and I can't reconnect at all until i restart the macbook. There is not error messages or anything. Does anybody know something about this?

Thanks

eh i thought only the aluminium models got this problem. try using the three-pronged extension cable plug thing (sorry i dont know what's the name haha) instead of plugging the power brick to the outlet. the longer one got proper grounding

White one shouldn't have this problem.

Try experiment on different location with different power points. If it still give you the issue call AppleCare.

Hi... I have a mac mini, cant remember which generation, but i bought it about 2 years ago.

recently i tried using the superdrive to read a DVD, but realised that it would not suck in the disc, then i checked the eject sign at the top and it says there is no drive sad.gif

I hardly ever use the optical drive on my mini and have no idea when it failed..

can it be repaired? or would it need replacement?

thanks

The drive will usually died only
of heavy usage. Bit that's will still recognize by mac os. Just that it will not read disc or difficult ejecting. Please check your PM.

Any idea which product code for 2GB RAM is compatible for the Late2009 Mac Mini? 3rd party RAMs like Corsair, Mushkin, Kingston, etc..

The specific product code or the RAM would definitely help in finding the exact RAM.

I'm looking forward for this upgrade as soon as i get hold of my mini.

Thanks.

Just ask if you can return the RAM in case of incompatible. Get it from C-Zone Lowyat they will know if the RAM works or not. Cause even with the same code, we get different RAM chip sometime.

Well, always connect to charger when you do software update.

When you boot from DVD1 do not do erase install. As soon as you selected language and you can see the Apple bar on top. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility.

Select your harddisk on left then select "Repair Permission" on bottom.

If this doesn't recover, you have to do a data recovery from another machine then re-install Mac OSX.

Why no backup?

im assuming u're using the new macbook with no firewire, so yeah u need to take out the harddisk. put it in a sata-to-usb casing, n copy ur files to another computer 1st.

"achieve & install" wont delete ur files, but ur problem might wont go away too. i guess it's worth a try, but do what i said in the above paragraph first to be safe.

n this time remember to keep the power plug on. there's a battery charge indicator up there, pay attention to it.

about backup, even if u dont have another hard disk to backup to, juz copying over important files on a thumbdrive would suffice. as long as u have a copy of ur data. for data that u wont need to change/edit, burn them on DVDs. those are cheap

OK few options for you:
a) Get an external USB drive and install Mac OSX into it. Once done, boot from the USB and recover files from your problematic HDD. (Easiest DIY)
b) Remove the internal HDD and recover files from another Mac with casing. PC need software to read Mac formatted drive. (Depends on your Mac model, some are harder to reach HDD).
c) Just send to service. (You have to pay)

Metal body scratches are very hard/ can't be removed.

Unless you know some good car/hardware guy that willing to help you do sand blasting.

You also have to take all your MacBook component out first, then put them back.

I have some question, need clarification from pros here

1) Let say if you installed windows xp using virtual machines such as VMware Fusion 3 on the mac, can it support NTFS file system?

2)If I just bought a external HDD, should i reformat it first using the apple disk utilities to FAT32 before using? What are the capacity limit in reformatting it?

3)Let say i wanna reformat my hdd to fat32 and wanna work with my windows xp in another machine, is it just reformat or have to set the MBR in the disk utility.app?

4)Can I partitioned my external hdd to 2 parts? one is fat32 and one is hps+; and still useable in both windows and mac platforms??

I hope someone can clarify this to me.. my curiosity been bugging me...

Thanks in advance

1) if i remember correctly, yes
2) yeap format to fat32 1st. i dont think got capacity limit. the limit of fat32 format is u cant store a single file that's bigger than 4gb
3) haa good question, im not sure myself. last time i accidentally format as MBR, it wont show up on my frens PC. it did when i changed to GUID. but then when i plug the same drive on my sis PC, it wont show up until i format to MBR. im confused too sad.gif
4) can

guys i got serious question. my friend's MBP got something stuck in her DVD drive, n since im not around i told her to just send to machines (not sure where, forgot to ask). the MBP is running fine la, no software problems or whatsoever, juz the dvd drive got something stuck inside. not a big problem.

but after they 'repaired' it, turns out that they formatted the hdd. i have no idea why. all her data is gone now. her works, photos (she juz came back from a UK trip..now all photos gone) all gone. this is very stupid of them. is there any way to ask for compensation? i think they absolutely have no right to format it...especially when the problem was strictly hardware. i've worked at an apple reseller before and we always create a backup for customer if we had to reformat the hdd. but this they didnt even bother to, didnt even tell my friend they're gonna format it. and the worse thing is, they dont even have to but they did anyway. this is insane.

hope u guys can help me out here

Why no backup??? Even gold status Apple Service Center will format your drive without prior notice if needed.

But if i format the two partitioned, which one should i set as primary?? fat32 or hfc+??? in order to use in both platforms? And if i format into 2... which one will the windows detects and which will dont??

1. You still need to install software like Paragon NTFS to gain full read & write in Mac OS IMNM.

3. Why not just format it in PC to FAT32, simple.

4. To have hybrid partition is risky, there are report that the partition might just gone unrecognise. Read the full article:

Scroll down to last comment, that works for me.

If I'm not sure I won't say it, unlike other member who simply can't resist to reply to almost single topic here.
Sandblast come in many grade, the more rough grade are used to cast shape or remove tough industrial stain. Fine grade can use to create matte finishing surface.
And I don't mean sandpaper. Please read more about finishing sandblasting. But I did not see any local company provide such service. So you better just live with your own mistake.

Referring to No 1:
hmm ok... wads 'IMNM'???

Referring to No3:
Cant i format fat32 from mac itself?? will it still work? if i format from the disk utility.app, do it need to change the partition map scheme???

Referring to No 4:
If its risky.. means use a full external hdd as hfc+ and a 16gb pendrive as FAT32 is the better option???
Since i only use it to transfer files like songs, images, and assignment files from both plaforms....

And if i wanna use hfc+.. should i use non journaled or journaled? since i only use as storage device??????

I meant to say if im not mistaken. "IIANM".

I can't understand why ppl like to dig for issue. The reason I suggest you to do it in PC is so that you wont need to bother with partition map and there no need further questioning.

I'm not here to tell you what to do, use your own judgement on what is best for yourself.

I always use journaled. Don't ask me why, ask google and read about tones of articles ppl have took time writing ok?

This gonna be my last reply of your issue. Your original question:
QUOTE
is there any way to ask for compensation?

Not "Did anyone manage to get compensation on similar case".

Also the rest of your post is ranting about them formatting the drive. So I think my reply valid to say that they've covered themselves on the fine print. And you think yours is the first case?

Recently I realized that one of my external HDD icon is duplicated. When I clicked both of them, they have the same contents.
Why two icons on my Desktop? I don't know what I did before that.
How do I remove one of them?

Has anyone sent in their Macs (under Applecare or not) for repairs? How long do they usually take them to repair?

I'm worried it might take forever. Because the last time I asked to replace my Mighty Mouse (scrollwheel broken), Machines said they would take ONE WHOLE WEEK because they have to claim it from Apple Singapore/Asia, even though they prolly have mouses laying around. I mean really. What is that?

I'm almost certain my iMac is dead now (orange screen on boot). Screen has very very obvious black burnt streaks that I sort of ignored cos I didn't want to send it in. But I guess no choice now, but to send it in to fix the whole shebang!

So if Machines want to pull that bullshit, claim vid card (I suspect is whats broken), claim LCD, claim mouse, Apple Asia then has to order it from the factory, then wait for it to arrive, then Machines wait for it to arrive, then fix it.

Shit is gonna take 6 months.

You have to understand that warranty claims is to help you repair, not 1 to 1 swap.

Last I did was 3 - 4 weeks wait.

Don't go to Apple retailers (eg. Machines). Instead, go to an Authorized Apple Service Center. If you are in the Klang Valley area, may I suggest Sapura. I have heard that they are quite efficient in what they do.

Sapura Synergy (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Authorised Service Provider) - Service Center
116 Jalan Semangat, Section 14,
46860 Petaling Jaya

Tel: 603 7958 8802
Fax: 603 7958 8100
Email: axispj.support@sapura.com.my
Web: http://www.sapura.com.my
Operating Hours: Mon - Fri @ 8.30 am to 6 pm

Get an Applecare case file lodged and make sure to mention it when you are handing in the machine.

Good luck!

They swap 1 to 1 if its not repairable or "too trivial" to repair like the mouse. Apple has swapped 1 to 1 full machines before even, its not rare they do that if there's an actual defect.

Mine is actually needed to be repair tho.

Thanks kwekeugene. I'll make sure to take it to Sapura.

Except for DOA units (defects/problems within the first few weeks of purchase), Authorised Apple Service Providers (whether it is Machines/Sapura/Switch/EpiCentre etc) are not responsible to replace faulty part(s) with their retail inventory. It is common procedure to order the parts from Apple, so you can't expect them to take a brand new boxed mouse/time capsule/etc to replace your faulty one.

Even Genius Bars at Apple Retail Stores don't replace faulty items with off-the-shelf retail inventory, except in extraordinary circumstances. Genius bars however do stock a wide range of replacement parts, so minor repairs/replacements could usually be done on the spot. Authorised Service Providers however can't afford to do the same, so parts are only ordered when needed hence the longer turnaround time.

If your iMac is still under AppleCare, it would be best to call up the hotline, describe your problems, and get a case ID. Provide this case ID when you send your iMac to the service provider (better still, AppleCare entitles you to on-site repairs for Desktop Macs, so you could get someone to come to your place). They will still have to physically diagnose the problem to identify what parts need to be fixed but having the case ID ready does help accelerate the ordering process a little bit.

If your Mac is no longer covered under AppleCare, it might be a better idea to send the service providers an e-mail asking for an estimated quote of repair costs, and ask them directly how long it'll take. Different service centres charge different prices for parts & labour, so you'd be surprised at how much you could save if you ask around.

Full list of service providers: http://store.apple.com.au/asia/FMPro?-db=a...x=72&-find.y=23

I've done several replacements through Machines, took about a week each time. Never had to send in my Macs for major repairs, but I've heard good feedback about VR Technology.

They won't erase your hard drive if it's unnecessary, but even if they do they won't be responsible for loss of data. Let them know you have stuff on your hard drive that you still need, might have to pay a little extra but they're usually able to extract the data first before the repairs are done.

On-site repairs would be so amazing... I doubt that happens in Msia.

Yea I'm strictly speaking about 1on1 replacements in the US where they literally just swap it on the spot. 1on1 machine replacements too for defective machines.

1-on-1 is possible if the unit are respectively new. Probably within days/week purchase and the issue is very obvious/severe. That is also highly depends on the person attended to you. As they have to put on the responsibility reporting back to Apple should they questioned the claim/swap.

General to speak the delay of repairs in Malaysia is due to shipping of parts from oversea. The usual process is to:
1) Diagnose and find out what's wrong. But of-couse your unit have to be in line for the technician to attend to it.
2) Once pinpoint the fault, the tech will then file a claim if the unit still under warranty or recall. Or quote client on the repairs.
3) Claim process require approval from Apple, they usually reply very fast. Total time upon this step might take a day or two.
4) Wait for parts to ship. Might take 3-4 days.
5) Installation & inspection before return to customer. One day.

Total turnaround should be 5-7 working days. I can not understand why it should take any longer should they being named under "service provider" list.

We provide on-site service/repair or same day service, which is new in Malaysia should I say. There're a few member whom have took such service, they can testify it biggrin.gif

I owned a 2009 13' macbook pro, just now I accidentally poke a USB cable to a firewire port. Spark start coming out of the port, and the macbook shut off by itself. I can on it back but the cooling fan is running at full speed and the battery indicator kept showing no batter is found. Is there anywhere to reset the macbook? Why should I do? I've already tried restarting it a few time....

Okay, so, I sent my iMac for repairs. Do the repair people actually diagnose the machine?

I called AppleCare and they couldnt figure out what was wrong over the phone. But I told VR I suspect its the video card after self testing (machine shuts down when I load 3D games on Windows / orange screen, wont boot on OSX), and it was noted in the copy of service note they gave me.

Then I called and asked, they said they ordered a new vid card. Do they actually open it up and check? Or was it based on what I said? They have my AppleCare case number and it certainly wouldnt say the vid card is borked. I mean it coulda been the fan malfunctioning overheating everything or the vid card connector on the Logic Board or the Logic Board itself.

I mean I can boot into Windows7 and do a buncha stuff with AERO effects (except games), but not OSX, straight to orange screen.

Im a lil worried they might actually take my word and ordered that vid card cos I suspected it.

Usual procedure they will diagnose before claiming the parts. Cause the faulty parts will have to return to Apple. If Apple found out the parts is not the issue, the Service Center will have to answer Apple on that. Or pay for the parts.

When the parts installed, they will run another round of test. Test passed only the unit will released to client.

That's a standard procedure requested by Apple.

Welcome to the world of Mac.

To your issue:
1. Try to loan another known good battery or test your batter on another known good MacBook to be sure what's wrong.
2. You need to replace the topcase (keyboard, trackpad, power button assembly).

Good Morning...

I'm trying to upgrade the RAM on my Power Mac G4 (1.25GHz)... It currently has 1Gb in with 2 empty slots remaining. How much more can I get and what's your recommendation on the brands. Checked on the net and it says DDR333 / PC2700 RAM, is that correct. Can I just go to Low Yat and get any RAM with that configuration?? Appreciate your help... Thanks.

Hi, your PowerMac should be Mirror Drive Door (MDD in short) the last model before G5.
The maximum RAM you can have is 2GB (4x 512MB).

I'm not sure if you can still get DDR1 333 in the market. The last we check there's only DDR1 400. But we uses that on some G5 and it works. Yet to try on G4, it's been a while we come across such Mac. When you buy you might want to check if the shop allow you to return the RAM in case unsupported. Maybe return for other brand or other items at equal value.

i had the same problem with my previous MBP...GPU problem. only way is to replace the GPU...which in notebook terms it's replacing the logic board...together with CPU n everything.

the cost for a new logic board, with the same already-outdated specs was around rm3000..not including shipping n labour. 3k for old spec stuff...u can get a new laptop with better specs for 3k after 3 years

so it's time to get a new machine bro...

If you don't hear the fan noise it's what you need to worried. It gets noisier most likely dust start collecting inside your MBP especially the air vent, heatsink and fan. So if it didn't get clean, it's normal to get noisy. If no noise, meaning your fan is not working or not spinning up as it should when your MBP under loads. If that happen for prolonged period, it will damage the MBP component due to overheats.

once again:
Dont be stingy on AppleCare.

fan sound is normal... if ur mac is doing heavy stuff, processor will heat up, and the fan will increase it's speed (more noisy) to cool the processor down. when u're not doing anything, the speed will be slow (around 2000rpm) so u wont hear anything

but if ur mac is idle, but the fan still very loud, then need to clean already lah. go to www.ifixit.com n search for ur mac. for the current macbooks, pretty easy...juz take out a few screws and open the bottom panel, u can see the fan already. juz clean it lah smile.gif make sure u use the right screwdriver though, n be careful with the other components. u need to clean the rear vents as well.

miniDisplayPort or miniDVI depends on which macbook model are you using. the old macbook white need miniDVI, the newer ones need miniDP.

Mine is late 2009 mbp 13" ... so i guess it should be mini DP. My question is are there any alternatives besides using this adapter to connect to projector ?

No, they are different physically. It won't fit. Let alone your is MacBook vs MacBook Pro.

They get 10hr is not just because of battery, but combination of more energy efficient components and chips. So even if u can put it in, you still more or less get back what u having.

hi all.. i m a new MBP user for 2 days..

i hv a problem when my mounted network drive was inactive and cause my Finder to hang and follow by unable to restart Mac except pressing Opt + Command + Power to reset..

1) My Mac connected to a few PC in a network..
2) when i access to certain network (Let us call it Beng PC as the computer name) to get some files.. there will be an "eject" button beside the Beng PC (inside Finder)
3) after a while.. i go to do some other work and i suspect the PC (Beng PC) that my Mac connected might be restarting/went to sleep or smth happened and the link between Beng PC and my Mac interrupted.
4) when i click my mounted drive (Beng PC).. it shows Connecting... and it is like forever..
5) then i press connect as also nth happen.. i can open the command + K and type in SMB Beng PC.. but still same.. connecting forever..
6) then i press the eject button beside Beng PC.. still nothing happen..
7) i tried to relaunch my Finder by pressing Option + right click the finder in Dock..
8) after that.. i get the error name "The application Finder.app can't be opened - 10180" and i cant start my finder..
9) I tried to restart the Mac tru the apple logo there..
10) the mac hang and will not restart until i press Option + Command + Power to reset

anyone know why? sweat.gif cry.gif cry.gif

i went to switch and ask.. they said i hv to restart the Mac.. it is known issue and since i m not buying from them.. i dont bother to ask more.. but if it is a known issue, is there anyway to avoid it?

so sad my first Mac for 2nd day only i face this problem.. sad.gif

That's another reason we dislike Windows. In Mac, if some other station still connected to it over network, OSX will warn you whenever you try to sleep/restart/shutdown. Even if you force it to shutdown the other side will only get a warning. Crash might happen if there're process running involving the disconnected server. If the server back in time, the finder will recover. Often the impatient user will force quitting processes and further complicate the matters, before even the server recover.

If you don't want to reconfigure your windows station. You can try to setup your Mac as a FTP server and connect to it from Windows. Look inside System Preferences > Sharing to enable it.

@more2teayap: which model is the Mac you want to clean?

@sumtuckieeeee:
which model is your MBP? 2009 or 2010?
Try calibrating the battery?:
it's highly subjective as on what you doing and how you operate the MBP.

Hey,

I have been trying to calibrate my battery to ensure the the battery capacity remain high but to no avail.

It has been continuously decreasing and I have ran out of idea how to increase the battery capacity or maintain it ?

I calibrate my battery like 3 times a week whereby I drain my battery down to 0% .

If what im doing right now is inappropriate, please advise me ! THanks

o? hmm.. but now i m doing like this..

i created 2 location.. one for my house and one for my office.. and if i wanna restart the ethernet, i go to Network preferences, then click on the ethernet and click the button beside the "-" and choose make service inactive, then make it active again..

wonder this is correct or not..

another thing is.. i hv MAMP in my Mac.. and i view my localhost website by typing http://localhost/mysite.. is there any way that i can preview my localhost tru VMware's Windows Internet Explorer?

Added on April 28, 2010, 2:18 pmnvm.. i found the way d.. just share here in case other forumers need it..

the site with tutorial
http://www.kathymarks.com/using-mamp-amp-v...ion-mac-test-ie

but i didn't set the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file there..

to access to the localhost of my Mac using VMware.. i just open IE, then type http://192.168.x.xx(your mac fixed IP)/<sitename>/

i think you don't understand. the problem is that current is not well-grounded at your wall-plug / extension. that's why you need the ext-plug to provide a good ground. actually, a well-connected socket would not have this effect.

the static thing is common. it's because our charger, from the magnetic end to the square brick, dun have grounding. this is not a problem if we're using good wall sockets. but we dont, that's y we get static.

so we need some grounding for our chargers. dat's where the extension cable (the one that plugs into the square brick, ending in a 3-pronged plug) comes in. it has proper grounding to prevent the static issue

Ok let me interpret again... There are 2 type of connectors that comes with the MBP right? One is the longer one (extension cable) with a proper 3 pin plug but another is just a head with 3 pin plug. And we now know the head with 3 pin plug is the one causing all the static problems right?

So if our wall sockets are bad then we have to use the extension cable (longer one) but if we have good wall sockets then we can use back the head only with 3 pin plug... Am I right?

If Im right that is what I meant in my previous post where I said ill use the longer one to test which is true I dont get any static charge.. and what im asking that why apple isnt doing anything to solve this issue? Isnt it bad for such a thing to happen?

@tarvalslain87 dude, u can try calling Apple and see what they say.

@more2teayap of course, one to one exchange for the whole unit. It's unacceptable.
