I suspect ur batt is dead. Get a new one; if that doesn't work and it still gives u the same issue then it's time to send ur Mac in for checking Do it before your AppleCare is up

Batt shouldn't affect ur data but nevertheless U should still constantly back up your data *smiles* As to how much it's gonna cost, do a check at store.apple.com/my

You could always check with Machines on their Trade In Trade Up scheme to see how much they're willing to pay for your machine.
