Haven't seen the keynote. Is it true that Bootcamp won't be available on these new Macs?

It's always interesting to see a transition from one tech to another. Before it was powerPC to intel x86... Now this.
Can't wait to see the benchmarks and user reviews. Right now I am unable to see how an arm SOC can beat x86 + Radeon gpu. |

8-core GPU, what should we expect here? are we expecting the video editing process is better than previous MBA? previous MBA gets a lot of bad comments regarding video processing.

Of course have to wait for reviews to see real life performance. |

QUOTE(hurricane21 @ Nov 11 2020, 08:43 PM) The MBP is targeted for pro-user, they will need a laptop capable of doing high workload task like compiling programs, rendering videos etc. These types of workloads demands for a powerful chip. To achieve this, the MBP needs to have a higher thermal budget to work with and with that, it is capable of ramping up to a higher clock speed and the ability to sustain peak performance consistently for a long period. I believe the MBA will bursts out its peak performance only for a short period of time and throttle afterwards, otherwise the heat will start to build up. I thought they mention that it doesnt need fans... then mbp comes with a fan. Dont know if it will be the same story as previous gen MBA. Poor thermal performance despite having the new 10th gen intel compared to MBP.

When they talked about the Air, fanless and completely silent is one of the cool new features they promoted.
Then when it comes to the Pro, an active cooling solution now becomes their selling point. Win liao loh. BTW, Apple Silicon M1 Chip in MacBook Air Outperforms High-End 16-Inch MacBook Pro This post has been edited by stargazhe: Nov 12 2020, 12:24 PM |

So who's looking to get one?
Was looking to get a Dell XPS 13 but this MBA is looking good as well. The stellar battery life is really enticing me. Despite the slightly larger footprint and b e z e l s on the MBA compared to the XPS 13, I'm willing to deal with it as a tradeoff for the battery life and hopefully the performance matches up. Hopefully the performance isn't too bad with thermal throttling. Will wait for reviews. |

But if you are used to apple’s app, then yeah this is a good buy since there is not much word of support from developers on this arm Mac yet |

Just look at apple advertisement all are good , no heat no nothing and everything else is faster .
Wait for honest review then only can know how good it is as promised . The reason I move to Chromebook is because its fanless and no crazy heat like my Macbook Air right now. |

I thought i heard Tim Cook says available globally during the event, but Malaysia until today still not part of 'global' in Apple's terminology.
Anxious about the review of this, and i almost bought it the day it was announced. The only thing holding me back was the "Unavailable currently." |

QUOTE(westlife @ Nov 18 2020, 06:41 AM) It is game-changing for sure. Windows laptops such as Dell XPS and Microsoft Surface Laptop/Book used to be viable competitors to the MBA/MBP, now the gap is so wide they are left in the dust. With M1 so far ahead, in 2-3 years time Apple could potentially sell M1 Macs at a significantly lower price and they will still be faster than Intel PCs. Just like their strategy with iPhone and iPad. |

Problem with the supply to Malaysia is because of COVID19 and output from factories.
I am looking forward to get the RM5k one. Time to save up more to get it. Hehe... I was thinking of getting the M4. But on second thought.... I am getting this. Still... My mind can change till the day I go to shop to buy. |

QUOTE(dman @ Nov 18 2020, 02:41 PM) Based on the reviews, the 8gb ram machine performed better than the 16gb intel version in photo editing software. So it's safe to say that the new 8gb ram is the new 16gb while 16gb is the new 32gb... About the 256gb storage, should not enough. I plan to use 1 or 2 year, because MBP entry model seems not worth for me. Plan waiting next gen high end MBP to become my main heavy workstation. QUOTE(attw @ Nov 11 2020, 08:33 AM) The good problem with Macs is they last damn long. My 2014 Air is still going good. No excuses to get a new one yet! Hey we have the same model I always calculate the "lifetime cost of ownership" - I paid RM 3955 for my Macbook Air back then and this translates to RM 1.80 per day over 6 years. Pretty damn good value for money for that. PS: I have to admit I do sometimes miss playing PC games though |

Wow all the benchmark and reviews look pretty great.
This might be my first Macbook I will purchase, almost pulled the trigger on early 2020 Macbook air last time, lucky I held off because of thermal issue people reported. Any idea when will this be available in MY? It's usually like a week after SIRIM approval, wonder if it has been approved..don't know how to check.. |

Not that I’m aware of but from my experience the autocorrect function on macOS is excellent. It basically corrects every spelling mistake I make so I can type fast without worries. |

I'm impressed how it run City Skylines even if the game isn't native yet, or ever will be. The next best thin and light is the Razer Book 13, $200 with Intel Xe Graphics which is only half as fast. The XPS with Xe Graphics isn't even out yet. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is much slower.

Had been using X1 carbon for the last few years, had always wanted that little bit more processing power. Guess this M1 chip will make me try using MBA once it is available here.

i was looking something to replace my desktop and old laptop, many people review this very good for light gaming..
however, mostly miss out android emulator. many new release mobile game now being play using android emulator due to hotkey and big screen. i wonder how this macbook handle android emulator as they are memory hungry application and how many instances can be run simultaneously. |

Actually now that I think about it, the fan noise has been prominent and continuous ever since I had the OneDrive app on both my MacOS and Bootcamp sides (i.e. all my files are always on continuous sync to cloud). Stopping the continuous sync on OneDrive almost always slows down the fan noise (unless I have tons of tabs open on Chrome). If you have any continuous sync apps to cloud, perhaps you can try pausing them to see if there's a change to your fan noise. |

Interested with this macbook air M1, but it seems there are a lot of problems those reviewers didnt reveal?
https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickmoorhea...t-want-to-pass/ Although link says Macbook Pro, but should be same for air since the diff is only fanless. What do you guys think? Now I am having doubt to buy this. |

Early reviewers are not paid by Apple, but they are all handpicked by Apple to loan them the devices before general release. So generally the reviews tend to be on the positive side. It doesn't mean that they are biased, just they will highlight the good stuff more. On the other hand, you have websites like Forbes which is well known to talk crap about Apple while displaying obtrusive ads all over the place. Just check out their so-called 'reviews' on any Apple product. They all go along the lines of "Don't get me wrong, the [Apple product] is by all means excellent, but it is actually terrible." If you are interested in the MacBook Air, you can check out MacRumors forums. You can get honest feedback from real users there. In my opinion, the M1 is without a doubt, a first gen product. Apple may have been planning it for years but real world testing has just begun. Don't expect it to be flawless. However, I believe most of the incompatibility issues will be solved within a year. It is up to you whether to wait and see or be an early adopter. |

QUOTE(plushie @ Nov 23 2020, 11:06 AM) Interested with this macbook air M1, but it seems there are a lot of problems those reviewers didnt reveal? Done reading the so-called "review" by Forbes. Don't you think the review is not logic at all?https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickmoorhea...t-want-to-pass/ Although link says Macbook Pro, but should be same for air since the diff is only fanless. What do you guys think? Now I am having doubt to buy this. |

QUOTE(plushie @ Nov 23 2020, 11:06 AM) Interested with this macbook air M1, but it seems there are a lot of problems those reviewers didnt reveal? Thanks for sharing this, it gives a real reality on the compatibility and it will take at least a minimum of 6 months to a year for all issues to be ironed out. Given this was the case when Apple moved to Intel in the past as well.https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickmoorhea...t-want-to-pass/ Although link says Macbook Pro, but should be same for air since the diff is only fanless. QUOTE(stargazhe @ Nov 23 2020, 02:52 PM) Early reviewers are not paid by Apple, but they are all handpicked by Apple to loan them the devices before general release. So generally the reviews tend to be on the positive side. It doesn't mean that they are biased, just they will highlight the good stuff more. Hmm, what you mentioned about early reviewer is basically showing they are biased though. On the other hand, you have websites like Forbes which is well known to talk crap about Apple while displaying obtrusive ads all over the place. Just check out their so-called 'reviews' on any Apple product. They all go along the lines of "Don't get me wrong, the [Apple product] is by all means excellent, but it is actually terrible." It is up to you whether to wait and see or be an early adopter. The Forbes highlighted several incompatibility issues that objectively can’t be disputed. Unless it’s an isolated case for that reviewer. I guess I will wait out instead of buying this in December. QUOTE(kevinpss @ Nov 23 2020, 03:16 PM) Which part? Some are specific to user preferences (external display etc), but incompatibility with the programs he mentioned look legit. |

The article seems to be very lopsided and may only represent a really small percentage of Mac users - it was widely reviewed as not friendly to non-Mac native app (though performs well with Rosetta) yet he choose to ignore it? Anyways as someone that uses 100% mac app (Final Cut Pro, Safari) for 95% of my workflow, 5% (photoshop & lightroom), I think I will have no problem with M1 at all! Cant wait! Mavik liked this post

I'm quite interesting in getting the base model MBA for development purpose (test water also), cuz I anticipate this first gen is going to get obsolete real soon.

If you talk about more than 5 years perhaps it's true. But PC laptops already catch up a lot recently. The only thing is those premium PC laptops (XPS series etc) are actually costing more than Apple nowadays. It's not worth it.i will never go with any windows laptop as the quality is totally far far behind apple one. |

QUOTE(mtxx @ Nov 23 2020, 05:48 PM) I would like to ask about Apple care. Most ppl do that - buying last minute... typical malaysians are the last minute lot...It says can buy within 12 months of purchase. Does it means it’s better to buy when the first year warranty almost over? Instead of buying it on day one. ![]() Anyway, your original first year warranty does provide up to 90 days of phone support from your date of purchase. Purchasing ACPP will extend your phone support to full 3 years in line with your extended warranty. Apple Complimentary Support |

I chat with their customer support inside Shoppe they told me those are HK/US units. But not sure why the review is MY unit. If really is MY unit then means that the stocks already in MY, but Apple don't want to sell yet. And Superdeal can get those stocks. |

Then again, I would rather just wait for official units since its almost the same price. I know superdeal’s units are already ‘running’ units, meaning the warranty will be much lesser (period) when you get your unit. |

From what I know at least for Airpods Pro that I bought (from SxxHxxx), it comes in 2 types of government approval papers inside. One is MCMC and the other is Thai's MCMC or gov.![]() How come there already has MY version already? Usually, you can see that they have Thai characters @ the box's description there along with English and Made for Malaysia. You can check your newly bought toys to see if you have the "sticker" on your box. *hopefully it's not mine only So I'm guessing that this person's unit is a "joint venture" unit for MY and another country. Since MCMC adi approved, they can just put the "certificate" in the box. Plus, the do not need to like specify like "oh this is MY unit" when the Macs are made pretty much the same for every region unlike iPhones, iPads and Watch. PS since Thai and our power plug is diff, I'm guessing this is a SG unit. |

QUOTE(yisien @ Dec 5 2020, 09:29 PM) But since the warranty is international, it’s okay to buy foreign units. But I guess just the warranty tenure will be shorter, depending on which stock / batch you take from. I’ll only buy if its a huge difference, like I’ve done previously with my 16 inch Macbook Pro. I think I bought it around 2.5k cheaper than local units, warranty short by 3 months lol. |

Only preferred sellers will give you Shopee Coins, and Superdeals is not. If by 12.12 no concrete news on availability in malaysia i might consider superdeal unit. Also as highlighted in my earlier post, you might want to confirm on the balance tenure of the warranty, if thats not a thing for you. Attached thumbnail(s) faizalmzain liked this post

I just ordered a MBA and MBP from super deal. Will update when it arrives. Decided to do it cuz the feverish demand for the M1 chips would mean that I would have to wait for a while before I could get it. However I sold my MBP 16” as soon as the reviews came out to minimise the price loss. So kinda stuck to my desktop for now. This is gonna be funnnn! My friends in Austria 🇦🇹 have said that the performance is as good as the reviews said, with some having sold off their 16” MBP’s too. faizalmzain liked this post

The other chart are index charts, and potential stocks worth looking into. I think the professionals actually have multi monitor setups because they're trading more than one at a time. Sorry 1st time Mac buyer so not familiar with navigating new product releases. it's free so better than nothing. as of now they're the only reseller that do pre-order.i think switch also confirmed pre order this week but not yet available in their online store. There's only 2 usb c ports with thunderbolt. Just get a mouse that connects via bluetooth. If I wanna extend my home screen to another monitor with hdmi. May I know which cable to buy? Thanks Usb c to hdmi. Better solution is to get thunderbolt + dock if you have lots of peripherals. I might just get the attachable one because most I want minimal dongles as possible. |

Hey guys. It's day 3 of me using my MBA M1 8GB/256GB. A few quirks
1. I can't drive my 144hz monitor. It runs at 60hz. Still trying out multiple different cables. Tried terminal commands, and they all don't work, so that's annoying. If anyone has better luck, do give a shout. 2. No matter if I'm on my MBA 8GB RAM or MBP 16GB RAM, it still eats into my SSD SWAP. There's no noticeable difference in smoothness on my daily use. Some have said that because the SSDs on these Macs are so fast anyway, the computer eats into the SSD swap regardless of whether there is enough RAM or not, as contingency. 3. Opening my usual apps; - thinkorswim - safari - discord - Davinci pro - QuickTime to record my screen on both my 8gb and 16gb laptops make no difference in how it feels. It's not because the 16GB isn't smoother. It's because the 8GB isn't at all laggy with all this. While I'm also a strict single Safari page user and no more than 5 tabs, I had my sister use it and she's a multiple browser and has nearly 30 tabs open. No issues on her side with the 8GB either. If you're set on getting 16GB, because you know you'll need it, all power to you. IF you're on the fence, I think 8GB might be surprisingly sufficient if your workflow's like mine. Oh and get used to hearing "phantom" fan noises. I keep thinking I hear my MBA ramp up the fan because that's all the Intel Macs would do. But nope, no fan installed so no fan noise. |

I'm using for working and sometimes might open 20-30 tabs . But no gaming and etc. Mostly MS office, zoom, Skype, teams |

QUOTE(frostbyte13 @ Dec 12 2020, 12:00 AM) its a USB C head yes, but it is simply rated for thunderbolt. You probably can buy a USB C to HDMI but I am not 100% sure about the performance degrade. I am looking to get a hub anyways since its 12.12 and I need something that can bring around too for mobility purpose. Yes boss. Hub should be okay but I bought USB c to HDMI and USB c to USB A only. Because I don't use so many Accessories |

Replacing my current 2019 Macbook Pro 16 with i9 to the Pro M1. The 16 inch is such a pain to bring out, like carrying weights around you. |

QUOTE(Seng_Kiat @ Dec 12 2020, 08:21 AM) Thanks for the inputs. I was somehow regret not upgrading to 16gb ram but your post means I made right decision. I wanted to upgrade but delivery will be after christmas or next year while without upgrade I would get it on 21-23 Dec. I’m getting 8gb as well. I plan to upgrade to the new 14” mini led next year for better yet battery life. Remember, M1 will be the worst and slowest laptop cpu made by apple. Hence sticking with the basic model for now. |

Hey guys what do you think abt the delivery times ya? Initially I thought i’d be okay with delivery between 30/12 and 7/1 but i grew a bit more impatient and a bit of anxious when I read on the internet their order got pushed back.
Then we might or might not receive our Macs on time. |

Bro, since haven't ship out, cancel your order and replace with 512 la.. Might as well go for the base 512GB with 8 cores GPU, coz you're upgrading RAM to 16GB anyway. Delivery date difference not more than 2 weeks bah, its acceptable to wait for it, rather than sticking with 256GB for few years. Well, unless you are thicked pocket and changing in short term, then its not smth that should be worry about. This post has been edited by eikozai: Dec 14 2020, 12:08 PM |

I'm taking Macbook Air (base model), then upgrade to 16GB and 512GB SSD It's a bit cheaper than Macbook Air (8-core GPU) with 16GB/512GB |

Hey bro, benchmark wise, it’s totally fine; but if you read around, some people raised worries with binned chips. Basically 7-core gpu chips are binned chips a.k.a rejected items so Apple sells them at lower price. I'm taking Macbook Air (base model), then upgrade to 16GB and 512GB SSD It's a bit cheaper than Macbook Air (8-core GPU) with 16GB/512GB If you want a completely peace of mind, just opt for 8-core gpu. firdauskop_3010 and lowkelvin liked this post

Hi everyone, I am planning to get a Macbook Air, and at the same time get the tax relief for this year. However, it seems that the new macbook is only for pre-order now and I never pre-order via Apple official store/machine/switch. Just wondering, does anyone know if the receipt shows the date I made the payment, or the date I get the laptop?

From my experience of buying through Apple Online Store, they will email you the receipt upon confirming delivered to your doorstep. Dated on the day of you receiving the parcel, or some times +-2 days. You definitely wont be able to declare the tax for Y2020 reduction for this purchase. yozx liked this post

Iceland has realized that even though this climate may not be great for sunning yourself on the beach, it is very favorable to one particular industry: data. Each one of those Advania buildings in Reykjanesskagi is a large data center, home to thousands of computers. They are constantly crunching away, processing instructions, transmitting data, and mining Bitcoin. Data centers like these generate large amounts of heat and need round-the-clock cooling, which would usually require considerable energy. In Iceland, however, data centers don’t need to constantly run high-powered cooling systems for heat moderation: instead, they can just let in the brisk subarctic air. Natural cooling like this lowers ongoing costs. . https://www.t4.ai/industry/server-operating...em-market-share - server-operating-system-market-share - 30 April 2020 ![]() The chart above shows the Server OS market share of global shipments for enterprise Server Operating Systems in 2018. Microsoft Server was the market leader with a 48% share of the total server Operating System shipments while 34% of the shipments were for Red Hat's Linux based Server OS. Red Hat is far and away the leader within the Linux Server OS market. While Red Hat and Microsoft are the most popular operating systems in the server OS market, the "Other" section contains additional well known products and brands. They include Apple's OS X Server to manage Mac computers and iOS devices on a network, and many Linux kernel based operating systems such as Ubuntu and Chrome OS for servers. Servers = data-centers or data-servers = nearly all of them are powered by x86/CISC processor-based OS. . QUOTE(lurkingaround @ Dec 10 2020 @ 05:27 PM) . If ARM/RISC processors could replace the x86/CISC processors in data-centers/servers, they would have done so long ago, eg from 2010 onward. Note that during the 2000s, the ARM/RISC processor was purposely invented and designed for mobile battery-powered, fanless and small smartphones = the processor had to be power-sipping(= purposely crippled) so that the battery would last longer, it produced less heat and could fit inside a smaller space. . Word About Tech Reviewers At this point you might wonder why this lonely individual is going against ALL the professional tech reviewers recommending you buy this device - why I think I’m right about this. Tech reviewers who make a living from reviewing tech products have a vested interested in positively endorsing a product. It’s not just about commission on sales (which can net some Youtubers millions per year) but it’s something much, much simpler - Early Release. Apple, Microsoft, Dell and many more tech giants have a long list of reviewers, influencers, Youtubers who they give their products to about a half a month before the public. This is so that reviews of their products from prominent individuals come out on launch day. However for a tech reviewer this is crucial - because who ever gets their article or video out first will usually make the most amount of views and clicks. In a lot of cases, the rule of thumb is, if four people have released their videos/reviews, you’ve already missed the train and the youtube algorithm will favour those four vids over yours. And you can see this for yourself, a handful of videos on any device will see millions of views whilst the rest will be lucky to break 100k views, most hovering around 40K. As such, tech reviewers will always want to finish their review on a positive note, telling their viewers to buy - no matter how critical they are in the first half of their review, so that they remain on the Early Release lists. Ask yourself, when was the last time someone reviewed a major tech product and told you not to buy? . Simply open a terminal and call python3. This installs the XCode command line tools including Python 3.8.2 compiled for Apple Silicon. But this is quite useless for the moment as trying to install numpy fails with a compilation error. JupyterLab can be installed but fails to run any notebook, causing kernel issues. .... Regarding TensorFlow, it’s too early for doing any reliable testing today as there is still too many issues, especially on GPU. Even on CPU we observe a strange underutilization with only 4 cores used at 50% or less each. ... . . |

Dated on the day of you receiving the parcel, or some times +-2 days. You definitely wont be able to declare the tax for Y2020 reduction for this purchase. Interesting, I thought the receipt is attached with the product. If I could miss YA2020 tax relief might not go for this haha.. |

Wait. If the M1 Chip is 8-core, how is there a 7-core version of the new MacBook Air?
By now, you’re probably wondering why there is a 7-core MacBook Air with an M1 chip if the M1 is specifically an 8-core SoC. That’s a great question with a fairly simple answer. In manufacturing, companies sometimes practice what’s called “product binning.” Essentially, product binning is when you’re able to re-use a component that may be defective to a certain degree, but one that does not contradict manufacturer claims or sacrifice overall quality. In other words, companies use it to create another (or lesser) product than the one the component was originally intended for. The name refers to these parts being placed aside in a bin that is then used later for another product line. When this process involves computer chips, we call it “chip binning.” What is chip binning? When it comes to chips, we’re specifically looking at cores. Sometimes in chip manufacturing, some cores may fail or not meet expectations. Rather than waste the entire chip, the faulty core is disabled and the chip is underclocked. In the case of the 8-core M1 chip, if one of the cores fail testing, it then becomes a 7-core M1 chip. The chip is essentially added to a bin and then these chips are used to create the less-expensive, 7-core MacBook Air. It’s not in any way a broken chip But it is now a 7-core device, rather than an 8-core device, so they sell it for a lower price point making it easier to obtain an M1 MacBook Air; albeit one with less performance power. Ben Lovejoy, 9to5Mac, has a great explainer: "No chip fabrication process is perfect and as the process gets smaller, the challenges of producing a perfect chip increase. When you’re operating at nanometer levels of precision, even the cleanest of clean rooms will still contain some microscopic elements of contamination. So what companies often do is aim for a particular spec, then separate out those chips which fall short and sell those as a lower-spec version. The chips are, in the parlance, placed in a different sorting bin. So it’s all about cost savings. "Apple isn’t asking TSMC to produce a version of the M1 chip with a 7-core GPU instead of an 8-core one. Rather, it is taking those chips which suffered a tiny amount of damage to the GPU such that only 7 of the 8 cores work properly. Those are designated 7-core versions and allocated to the base model MacBook Air. Should I upgrade to an 8-core model instead? In a word: probably. It really comes down to your budget and your needs; but, to get the full M1 experience, you’ll want to get the 8-core model. It’s a matter of opinion, but I think if you’re buying an M1 device, you should really experience it the way it’s meant to be experienced. Again, at the end of the day, it’s up to you. It’s what you need or want, and what you can afford. Maybe 7-cores is all you need. Either way, it’s a major improvement over Apple’s previous MacBook Airs, and the 7-core version starts at just $999. So choose one that works best for you. ![]() ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by firdauskop_3010: Dec 16 2020, 11:47 AM |

Get a USB C / Thunderbolt Dongle / Hub with HDMI / Thunderbolt / VGA ports. Don’t need to buy 1st party Apple dongle, decent brands like UGreen or Hyper works fine too.So, if my monitor is HDMI, getting this would be enough: https://www.apple.com/my/shop/product/MUF82...3228c5ca3bfff16 Right? QUOTE(lowyatfag @ Dec 17 2020, 11:47 AM) hi. for my budget rm4000 if the usage is play AAA games, you're better off with a Windows laptop 99% of the time.should i go for m1 mac air or windows gaming laptop like msi gf63, hp pavilion, acer nitor?? honestly i like thin n light weight laptop but i want the laptop able to run fifa 21 smoothly as well. please advice? btw this m1 can play fifa21? Long term and short term wise. The problem is compatibility with macOS and also the MBA will throttle after long usage. Not to mention getting the 8 core will result in higher stable fps, but that might be out of your bduget. |

Hi everyone,
when do you being charged after placed order on Apple website? I placed my order (education price) when 13 Dec, filled in my card detail, But until now the status is still "Processing", and my card still not yet being charged. There is no email asking me to verify my student qualification too May I know if I'm missing any step? |

I called machines southkey JB since morning to ask for stock. They actually got one coming in evening (they dont know about the availability and ask me to try my luck and wait). So I bought it on site. Anyway the staff said any walk in will need to preorder from now on.

QUOTE(pizzaboy @ Dec 12 2020, 08:12 AM) Hey guys. It's day 3 of me using my MBA M1 8GB/256GB. A few quirks Does it turn warm easily under normal use?1. |

This afternoon i visit machine IOI Putrajaya..upon quick inspection i realise that M1 Macbook magic keyboard feels a little wobbly especially space bar. Unlike M1 Pro n macbook air early 2020, this 2 magic keyboard is very study, no wobble and almost feels like butterfly keyboard key travel.

Did u buy it from overseas personally and not through apple malaysia website? If you do, then you need to have ecomm and edagang ID for custom clearance. |

QUOTE(pepsin @ Dec 17 2020, 11:02 PM) My normal use is just YouTube playing and TDA and Microsoft Excel, so under these conditions, absolutely not. Warm happens when I render short workout videos for my clients, but even that feels like you're holding a puppy on your thigh. I have done the typical thing that you need to run online classes; 1. TD AMeritrade 2. Safari, going through a bunch of PDF files and websites 3. Excel 4. Streamyard + record [streaming and recording my screen] 5. Zoom and the MBA handles it like a champ. No issues. My 16" Intel would have gone to the moon by now. Great laptop, no issues. 10/10 would buy again. After having both the MBP 16GB and the MBA 8GB, both my gf and I agree the MBA is better for us lighter users. Haven't found a way to get this MBA to its knees yet if I don't deliberately stress it for no good reason. pepsin liked this post

So took it out yesterday for a field test. Left the house with a near full charge because I left it on sleep throughout the night.
8.5hours of screen time & 48% to spare. Only ran Chrome, lots of social apps & productivity usuals. Damn this battery life is amazing. Though not so happy about the bugs, there are some clear issues trying to play Dota 2 properly. Voice would normally get cut & audio flips to headset quality though I suspect has something to do with the Bliuetooth. ![]() |

For those who ordered via apple store, how long did it take for the order to go from "processed" to "shipped"? I ask because I'm waiting for my card to be charged so I can convert to 0% instalment via MBB promotion which ends 31st Dec. I ordered on the 15th, still stuck at "processed"

Your card will only be charged when it’s Preparing to Ship. So if your delivery date is in 2021, you might need to be less expecting that you can make it. |

Its rumored to cater on higher end computer like the 16" MBP, top notch iMac and/or anything on par to this.It possessed more performance cores and MBA is not intended for this category of performance, yet. Apple have brought the MBA to another level of performance with this M1, its very unlikely for them to bump it again before the annual refreshment period. Seems like you'll have to wait for another 10-11 months. Well, why not if you can wait, since Apple first release is always public testing for the next generation to be implemented with stronger performance, less bugs, and always with more new features that is jaw dropping. |

Gosh, i still have 3-4 weeks to wait before i can lay my hand on this device. Growing more and more impatient everyday.
BTW, i got question to check with people who have landed their hand on one. How's the initial setup via Time Machine recovery from older Intel based Mac? Was all the data transition successful without bugs? Or if there's any pls share a bit to help enlighten. How about applications that are not supported? When launching it, what's the experience you get? |

For some ppl, can tolerate a 20 years old car even though have budget to buy a new car. But some ppl can't tolerate and change when budget allows. However if can't tolerate and no budget then still can't do anything. M1 could be the trigger point as apple fans Should have budget to change a new one. 😂😂😂 |

QUOTE(xiiaoisaac @ Dec 22 2020, 01:32 PM) Im planning to get the MBA. But i am thinking is it enough storage. Is there a 3rd party to increase ram and storage? and any effect on warranty? Any recommendation? Get a cloud subscription. You'll learn better to not store anything remotely important locally lol |

Hello all sifu, wana ask, do you guys shut down your MBA when you are not using it?
I have been using it the way just like ipad/iphone, just closed my screen when i am not using, and the battery still good, maybe just 1/2% decrease overnight. Will this cause any issue/problem? |

QUOTE(moiskyrie @ Dec 23 2020, 08:43 AM) 8gb and 256gb enough for Adobe? If you can afford it (RM800 for an additional 8GB RAM), you’ll see performance improvements for Photoshop with additional RAM, especially if you have multiple files open at once with heavy browsing in the background. However, most people are commenting that an 8GB M1 Mac performs like a 16GB intel Mac. I just got an M1 Mac Mini yesterday with Photoshop installed but I haven’t done enough testing yet. Primary photoshop/illustrator/indesign Seldom premiere/audition. Photoshop like creating/editing banner around 200+ x 200+ inch Illustrator also around those size... Enough? The reason why some reviewers commented that an 8GB M1 performs so well is because the swap files are written on the fast SSD that comes soldered with the chip. So there is no speed penalty even though the machine have to create a large swap file to handle the load. However, SSDs are known to have a limited shelf life and this constant read-write-erase may shortened its lifespan. What I personally did was to upgrade to 16GB (you can’t add additional RAM later) but stick to the base 256GB SSD (you can always connect to external SSD). Of course, everything is relative. Even with an 8GB RAM, I believe that the machine can work flawlessly for 5-6 years. With some forward planning your Macs can work perfectly for many years to come. My oldest machine which is used by my kids now is a 2009 iMac which still works perfectly (though Apple stopped MacOS updates to the model years ago). |

QUOTE(moiskyrie @ Dec 23 2020, 09:37 AM) Currently using x1 extreme First gen, Did some quick test to replicate your work environment. I have done the following:-16gb ram with 256+1tb nvme... When editing multiple scan file, need wait several second for each file, and now abit lag.... 16gb ram with 256gb ssd, 20+ chrome tab, 10~20 open file in photoshop/illustrator Can handle? Also enough for parallel? Windows virtual... Thanks - Loaded around 10 files in Photoshop- a combination of complex layered PSD files (with text and layer effects) as well as a few RAW photos - Opened 20 tabs on Safari (a combination of pages with complex Javascript, YouTube (with videos playing), Flickr, 500px, news sites, etc) - My productivity software (Outlook, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Slack) was opened in the background - Tidal playing in the background Observations:- 1. Loading in Photoshop (average file size between 80-100MB for the layered files and 50MB for the RAW photos) was extremely fast 2. Everything that I was playing in the background (music from Tidal, YouTube videos on the tabs) was still playing without any lag or pauses 3. CPU load was at 20% (Idle standing at 79.82%). Biggest CPU hogger was Photoshop which took up 25.8% of the CPU. Not much CPU pressure here. ![]() 4. Swap file was at 6.44GB while 12.37GB of RAM was used up. Not much memory pressure here. ![]() Overall, 16GB would be more than comfortable for what you need. Do bear in mind that Photoshop hasn't been optimized for the M1 yet so it is still running under emulation mode with Rosetta 2. Even then, it still performs better than my current 2018 Intel MacBook Pro! With an Apple Silicon version coming in Q1 2021, expect more efficient RAM and CPU utilisation. I usually do not run Windows under Parallels on the Mac. Actually, I've haven't got much software that I can't do natively on MacOS. Also, there is no Parallels that work with M1 yet except for the Technical Review that they have right now. Even then, the Technical Review only emulates an ARM machine and you need to install the ARM version of Windows (also a preview). From YouTube creators initial trial, it is not looking like a workable solution yet as it is pretty buggy and slow. And Microsoft's x64 emulator on the ARM version of Windows is also pretty slow and doesn't work with all software yet. |

Do bear in mind that I did the test on the Mac mini M1 (which has a fan) and not on the MacBook Air. (which doesn't). Under immense load, the Air will thermal throttle. However, as I was doing the test, I was listening to see if the fans turned on (it didn't) and touched it regularly (it was still as cool as can be). I must say that I am really impressed with the performance of the Apple Silicon M1. In fact, I don't recall hearing the fans turning on or the machine running hot at all since powering it up yesterday. |

Mac Mini also have better air spaces in the box, so probably better heat dissipations compares to MBA that’s cramped in this shell. |
