Hey guys. It's day 3 of me using my MBA M1 8GB/256GB. A few quirks

1. I can't drive my 144hz monitor. It runs at 60hz. Still trying out multiple different cables. Tried terminal commands, and they all don't work, so that's annoying. If anyone has better luck, do give a shout.

2. No matter if I'm on my MBA 8GB RAM or MBP 16GB RAM, it still eats into my SSD SWAP. There's no noticeable difference in smoothness on my daily use. Some have said that because the SSDs on these Macs are so fast anyway, the computer eats into the SSD swap regardless of whether there is enough RAM or not, as contingency.

3. Opening my usual apps;

- thinkorswim
- safari
- discord
- Davinci pro
- QuickTime to record my screen

on both my 8gb and 16gb laptops make no difference in how it feels. It's not because the 16GB isn't smoother. It's because the 8GB isn't at all laggy with all this. While I'm also a strict single Safari page user and no more than 5 tabs, I had my sister use it and she's a multiple browser and has nearly 30 tabs open.

No issues on her side with the 8GB either.

If you're set on getting 16GB, because you know you'll need it, all power to you. IF you're on the fence, I think 8GB might be surprisingly sufficient if your workflow's like mine.

Oh and get used to hearing "phantom" fan noises. I keep thinking I hear my MBA ramp up the fan because that's all the Intel Macs would do. But nope, no fan installed so no fan noise.

Does it turn warm easily under normal use?

Hi sifus, planning to jump back into Apple wagon, because of the M1 of course. Just wondering on which one I should get (be it MBA or MBP) based on my usage below:

Current:
1) Productivity tools (Browsers/Google Workspace/MS Suite/light editing)
2) Netflix and other streaming services
3) Parallel to W10

Future:
1) image and video editing (non-hardcore)
2) light gaming like nothing beyond eSport titles

With the above requirements, should I get 256gb or 512gb variant? Apple tax on storage is too high, just wondering if I can get away with 256gb even with parallel inside. (but, buying Apple means buy now or we'll be stuck without upgrades forever)

In terms of RAM, I believe I shall get the 16gb to have better longevity/resale value in the next coup years.

Would the 7 vs 8 gpu cores matter here?

If depends on my budget, I can buy whichever variants, just trying to make a smarter decision only.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Generally MBP will be more suitable.
Fan for long hour of extensive CPU+GPU load
16GB RAM for hardcore multitasking
>256GB storage for installing lots of apps, editing plugin, (if you can get away with external SSD, then should be ok for viewing files or editing video.)

I use MBA because I do simple task only. I just need fast laptop and good battery life. If really do hard core thing, better wait for desktop class.

If gaming also, need more storage. 256 really not enough. Your esport game how big after install? 30GB? Normally, I calculate roughly how much I need to use then I double up. For me, I use only 50-90GB only, so 256GB will be enough. If fully utilize the storage >80%, then system will be laggy. Just my experience.

I use safari 10 tabs, brave 15 tabs. Light on Microsoft Words and excel. 2 iPad games, mouse tweak, Facebook messenger. All open at once no problem. I would say these pretty consider normal usage. I think m1 is too fast. So ya, I just feel snappy. BTW, MBA really no heating issue, not even warm. I only feel warm if downloading large app from slow internet or photo editing. That’s it. Hope my experience is relatable to you.
