The MBP is targeted for pro-user, they will need a laptop capable of doing high workload task like compiling programs, rendering videos etc.

These types of workloads demands for a powerful chip. To achieve this, the MBP needs to have a higher thermal budget to work with and with that, it is capable of ramping up to a higher clock speed and the ability to sustain peak performance consistently for a long period.

I believe the MBA will bursts out its peak performance only for a short period of time and throttle afterwards, otherwise the heat will start to build up.

I'm quite interesting in getting the base model MBA for development purpose (test water also), cuz I anticipate this first gen is going to get obsolete real soon.

if the usage is play AAA games, you're better off with a Windows laptop 99% of the time.

Long term and short term wise.
The problem is compatibility with macOS and also the MBA will throttle after long usage. Not to mention getting the 8 core will result in higher stable fps, but that might be out of your bduget.
