In Ubuntu Forum, that where lots of problems of Ubuntu were being posted and responded by Ubuntu community and developers.

IMHO posting Ubuntu problem in this forum, u may not get effective results as posting ur problem to Ubuntu's forum.

Beside Ubuntu's forum, there is Ubuntu's Wiki which enrich with important information contibuted by Ubuntu community and developers.

sounds like a bad internet connection or their server side prob

if you have probs with the download (sometimes i have too)
just download the add-on-cd (only for x86). it has the cache packages and does not require internet connections to install the common apps

Ok, i have UBUNTU 5.10 and a BenQ 1640 DVD-RW drive.
Its seems that I can't install UBUNTU on my system.

Tried it with my friend's pc who is using BenQ 1640 too. So, basically it's the drive. I've also googled for a solution but still no hope...

Is there any settings I should tweak with to make it work?

Try enabling dma before installation...

type sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/hd? ---> whatever your dvd drive is...

as far as my knowledge knows, it's almost impossible for most linux distro to support a usb based adsl modem. whereas an ethernet based is mostly well supported.

I'm having this problem when booting the installation disk...
it stops running after the line:

my limited knowledge tells me that the last line should be a hdd.
try removing one hdd, and install again, see if the problem still persists.

Warty is current having some problem with writing boot record into SATA drive with another PATA drive present.. The solution is to yank the PATA drive out..

I dont think so.
In Linux, if there is irq conflict, it will tell us that something is too busy on that channel...

today i booted my Ubuntu from a P4 2.8ghz based machine.

at first i tried my HDD installed Ubuntu. it stops at mounting drive. ok so fine, i tried other IDE slots, changing master to slave just in case the device settings and such - didn't work either.

ok so i then tried other ways of booting, like recovery mode - didn't work either.

so next up, LiveCD. strangely it'll reach the language preference part and refuses to move........AT ALL.

at this point - it gets pretty annoying. tried other keyboard (not via KVM) - didn't work either. tried it just to confirm, cos it's really weird. how could one access BIOS and manage settings yet not able to choose language?

it's really strange as i've actually used Ubuntu on this particular machine before and it worked flawlessly.

so fine, i recalled my earlier use was on a P4 2.4 and not a 2.8. so i switched the P4 2.8 to P4 2.4 (both are 512kb /533fsb models) and voila!!! it worked!!!!!!

my problem is, how do i configure it to use WPA? I need to configure in WPA. And how do i load the driver when startup, what i do now is everytime startup, i type "sudo modprobe ndiswrapper".

erm. i haven't tried SERVER mode but i think that's what it's for isn't it? ended up CLI.

are you waiting for the GUI? maybe you should do the default installation.

most server mode doesnt come with GUI cos it's meant for server, doesnt need all the fancy GUI.
either u install x-window or reinstall the whole thing

I've a new Ubuntu(5.10) installation CD from the official web site, when i try to install on my PC (where this system have WinXP SP2 installed with 3 partition, i plan to install on the last drive, E drive), everything start pretty well , but then while it try to load/start the partitioner at "Starting up the partitioner", at about 41%, it just hang (I've wait for long enough, about 30minutes), but no luck, no response at all, then i try to reset the system and start over again, but still the same, then after that i shutdown totally. In the next day morning, I try to install again, but hey, still the same problem, hang at the "Starting partitioner", I've confirmed that the content of the CD is OK.

Anyone has idea of this? Any solution? Or this is the bug of Ubuntu? huh?

Try to partiton your E: drive to Ext3 format. See the tutorial here. Hope it helps.

thanks, but i already have the drive in Ext3 with the Swap drive, but still fail at the "Starting up the partitioner" at around 41%, any idea?

the CD might be scratched or ur CD drive need to be changed
but then again, does this process needs the CD at this stage? might be a bios glicht, or a faulty IDE connector (i think this is most likely)

Guys, any idea where i can get a hold of needed gcc 3++ compiler "package"?
ubuntu64 5.10 came with gcc 4, n i cant compile stuff (vlc, mplayer etc..)
the guides on the net mostly use "apt" , but i still cant configure my usb dongle..
so updating using synaptic is a no-no...

Just curious, why would you need GCC 3... if you already have 4?

i have no idea..
i cant compile stuffs that were build for gcc 3 n 2
even i include ./compile -(the command that disable gcc version checking)

unsure if apt get might solve this..

Missing dependencies? Video software like VLC might need libmpeg, libxml and other sound libraries, just to name a few. Check your compile error messages, google it if you're not sure.

Using apt would save you all the trouble, of course.

i have problems after installing to a machine with nvidia 6200 vga

during installation i told x to run at 11xx x 8xx resolution
when my ubuntu loads up, the whole screen is full of funny shitty colors.

i cant view my desktop.

mine had no problem with the Nvidia 6200. but i just use default drivers and at 1024.

btw i was showing my friends Ubuntu - but i don't know where to set the ADSL/PPPoE connection thing.

i looked every where too used to setting it within my network (DHCP / Static IP) until forgot to look into this part.

I didn't have to do any setting for ADSL connection - (Are you using a USb adsl modem?). It was done automatically. Just make sure you network cable is connected. I did a reboot once with the net cable out and plug it in after Ubuntu boot up - but it failed to connect to the internet. That was with Live CD! Try it and see if it works out this way.

are u trying to use a pppoe dialer or hook up to a network with router? try this

sudo pppoeconf

to get dial thru the console before u download the gnome dialer ...

u can download the pppoe dialer [sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp] and set accordingly

yeah well on my network ubuntu no problem. cos my network all set already - just DHCP can settle it. manually configure IP also no problem.

the thing is no matter how you connect - you still need a PPPoE dialer to establish a connection - that dialer is no where to be found.......


metalhead, thx for the post - didn't know that the PPPoE dialer needs to be downloaded. downloading is not a problem, cos my Ubuntu has been folding and sending WUs and such.

i'll probably try it out so that i know what to do next time when i need to connect manually.

another thing i face is the session thing. let's say if i use VNC to log out, then when i want to log in again i'll have this 'you logged in less than 10 seconds blablablabla' thing that keep refuses to let me login to the UI.

so end up reboot, go to CLI /safe mode. then reboot again. blablabla.

i use win98 boot disk to boot and fdisk /mbr to remove it...but my fren told me that i can do fix mbr from booting into windows command prompt...i haven;t try that tho...

Yes, but for newbie I would not recommend it require because resize existing XP partition (presumed HDD has been preinstalled with XP by manufacturer) for Linux OS plus file backup before resize partition. Otherwise, use vmware workstation (if u have it) on XP then you can run Ubuntu as guest OS on vmware without having to peformed the above resize partitions but you need min 256MB or more memory.

2. Ubuntu installer is GUI based so as Windows too.

3. Plenty of documentation on the Ubuntu website and Ubuntu community web site. It comes with OpenOffice Suite 2.0.x which can read/write MS Word documents file format and export document as PDF file without using Adobe PDF.

u can always try ubuntu livecd before installing it into ur hdd permanently...

new version of ubuntu comes with livecd...just put it in ur cd-rom, boot tru cd - and start using...

1. workstation is a software which enables u to run several OS in the same pc..good for trying unknown OS such as Linux on windows...
2. Newer version of openoffice can run on windows..forget what's the latest version d..
3. To run the live cd, u need to put the livecd in the cd drive then restart ur pc so that ur pc boot from the livecd...

Performance - depends on how you manage the OS
Usuability - Depends on the how you manage the applications
Secureness - depends on how you manage the security features and the sites you're going
Applications availability - depends on how much you know on getting them

In the end, it's really up to you. You can run a good OS badly and vice-versa.

I've inserted the Live CD and proceed to Install. Set 2 partition:
1 ext3 partition
1 swap partition

after installation, when the system is about to boot, it says
"No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

Can someone tell me if i did anything wrong?
Must the swap partition be part of primary partition?

May I know how do I do that? During installation, even though i had 2 partitions (one formatted as ext3 n the other as linux-swap), i could only assign '/' to ext3 partition and swap to the other linux-swap partition.

Did you go through the setting up LILO or GRUB screen? Usually most distro will put you through this screen during install.

Anyways, you can try this:

1. Boot from Ubuntu CD
2. Determine the type of Bootloader Ubuntu uses
3. Install the bootloader using the CD

I only have advance experience with LILO, so cannot help much if you're using GRUB, sorry.

As Far as I know, Ubuntu use GRUB for their Boot Loader. I have it dual boot in my office's P.C. It's kinda complicated to create partitions and such things for a dual boot as Ubuntu doesn't really have user friendly Installation interface. However, for a single O.S, it's so simple. Do you dual booted your system ? Or is it the only O.S on the P.C ?

I left half of my HDD empty for future alternate OS. So currently its only a single boot. and yes it is suppose to boot with GRUB. However, nothing comes out when I manually edit the partition disk. So now each time I have to have the CD inside to load the menu and select "Boot From Hard Disk". Hopefully anyone of you can help me out with this problem.

I see. If u can boot from the H/D from CD that means your installation is correct, the only problem is perhaps the GRUB wasn't installed correctly, or there was an error while installing it. Now what you have to do is just re-install the Grub. Here is what I think you should do : http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Restore_Grub ( remember : DO NOT FORMAT or then it means installing it all over again ) then make sure that the GRUB is installed in MBR. Hopefully that helps.

Since you have a livecd, I would suggest you follow this instruction:

1. Boot using livecd.
2. mount your installed linux partition
3. chroot to that partition
4. run : grub-install /dev/hda

Example:
Your linux partition = /dev/hda1

# mount -rw /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
# chroot /mnt/hda1
# mount -t proc /proc proc
# check or edit if necessary /boot/grub/menu.lst
# grub-install /dev/hda
# umount /proc
# exit

then reboot.

how do u install the software? download from the internet and install .... you can try to install them using the Synaptic Package Manager ..it's easier and it check and install all the dependencies package when u install the application u wan ...
