thanks dude. now i can get da overview from livecd. rclxms.gif
overall what u think da best, windows or linux??
Could you detail out the criterion that you would like us to compare?
Performance - depends on how you manage the OS
Usuability - Depends on the how you manage the applications
Secureness - depends on how you manage the security features and the sites you're going
Applications availability - depends on how much you know on getting them

In the end, it's really up to you. You can run a good OS badly and vice-versa.

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie to linux. I have some litte experience with linux RH b4; but havent try to install linux to my own PC.
I plan to install Ubuntu into my PC now; I only want to install the Ubuntu console (I dont want Ubuntu GUI!!). how to do that???
Currently, i'm running windows in C & D drive. I would like to install Ubuntu into E drive of my PC. how to make it ???

thanks
With alternate or desktop CD, select Server Install. Done.
Or download the server CD and go for the default install.

Btw, Linux sees partition differently. You cannot install into your FAT32/FAT16 partition (unless your kernel has UMSDOS, which does not exists, by default in most current distros kernels). You must installed GNU/Linux onto a partition with supported Filesystem format, like ext2/3, ReiserFS or XFS. In fact, Linux support many filesystems types.

Put it in a simple way, you cannot install GNU/Linux onto drive E:, because the Linux kernel doesn't know what is "drive E:".

Server Install == only install console ??

Yes... server install, means basic install without X server or desktop or any window manager.

What's ur GC again? Maybe you are using the generic nv driver, not the proprietary one.

can you tell us the version of VLC player you are using and the exact codec format for your videos?

try to play it on a different OS with the same version of VLC if possible.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

vlc the latest one, also try with smplayer and mplayer but the result is same,
the format is .rmvb , .avi

Ah, i see. VLC 1.03 right. Did you install the proprietary Real codecs, like as in the Real Player installed in Windows (not the free one that comes with VLC).

Your AVI videos use what format? MPEG-II, H.264 etc?

List of playable media format of VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html
Real is partially supported, you need to get the proprietary codecs to play your Real movies/audio smoothly.

Take a look at ur distro forum (if not the official one, try the community/fan based forum) for solution.

In Ubuntu, I believe the package called w32codecs. Example with Mplayer on Ubuntu
