SATA offers several advantages over the older parallel ATA (PATA) interface: reduced cable-bulk and cost (reduced from 80 wires to seven), faster and more efficient data transfer, and hot swapping.

Speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
HDDScan http://hddscan.com/
Speedfan allows comparing your SMART results to online database for more suggestive informations.
HDDScan, external hard disk cannot retrieve SMART? This software supports all, even monitor your external hard disk temperature, cool? Hell yeah~

These 2 software are the most that I used to retrieve the SMART info from my hard disk. Speedfan even allow you to compare your result to online database for more information.
If you feel performance drop, watch for "Relocated sectors count" or "Pending sectors count", these 2 by far is what make the hard disk slows down, even with fresh installed windows, it still slows down after few hours usage. So don't think SMART is not much of a use, it's a preventive warning to your precious data.

If possible TS please put these information on the first page, thanks  thumbup.gif

For Western Digital, warranties for the Caviar Blue, Caviar Green and Scorpio Blue hard drives will be reduced to two years from three years.

Seagate’s new warranty policies will become effective on Dec. 31, and Western Digital’s changes will begin Jan. 2, 2012. Hard drives bought before those dates will retain their original warranty policies.

Just wait..?
I think there are a few smaller shops hiding around the corner in LYP that may still have a few left, but they'd probably mark up the price to above RM200.

general performance lo, you won't see any much different unless benchmarking,
OS drive, get 7200rpm drive, storage, you can get those Green series drive

generally there isn't any 7200rpm drive for more than 1TB that is non expensive.

WD Blue 500gb (7200rpm) comes with 16mb
WD Green 1tb (5400rpm) comes with 64mb for Advanced Format Drive
WD Black 1tb (7200rpm) also comes with 64mb for Advanced Format Drive

I think most people are using WD Mybook elements?

For me personally I like to build my own drive.
I have a few Samsung F3 1TB in Hornettek Hover SSC external enclosures.

But if you don't want to do anything like that, I guess the WD Mybooks are rather good.

We normally don't compare between companies, but between their products. Samsung's F3 is good, Seagate's Momentus XT is better if you have the money, and WD also has some good stuff. It depends more on your budget and what type of hard disk you want.

5400RPM drives.
You're only using for storage, so it doesn't matter. More over you're transfering over USB, doesn't matter even more.

USB 2.0 itself is already a bottleneck lol.
The max you can get out of USB2 is 30-35 mbps.

On average, most "green" HDDs runs up to 90mbps.
So yes... regardless of what you do, theres going to the be limitation of the USB there.

Otherwise, get an external enclosure with USB 3.0 (which you will then need a USB 3.0 expansion card unless you already have one), or use eSATA.

All external 3.5" enclosures will come with a power supply.
So you don't have to worry on that part.

USB power alone is not enough to power up a 3.5" HDD running at 7200rpm.

USB power alone is not enough to power up a 3.5" HDD running at 7200rpm.

How much would it cost roughly.

The World's First 3TB External Hard Drive, From Seagate for 250usd, around 812myr, for USB2.0

Which actually really isn't extremely expensive too!
The Seagate GoFlex hub can actually be changed to a USB 3 version though. So its not really for USB2 only.

5400RPM drives.
You're only using for storage, so it doesn't matter. More over you're transfering over USB, doesn't matter even more.

Currently what is the more reliable brand for 3.5 HDD Storage ?
I am considering Samsung however the warranty period of a year is a bit short for my perspective.

I am looking at keeping the hard disk for at least more than 3 years.

I'm currently using an iMac which has only firewire and USB ports. I intend to use an external HD for my photo library and I know that using a USB 2.0 HD is going to be too slow to access and process the photos. My internal HD is all full up. Hence the reason for me looking for a firewire HD. Since the firewire HD is no longer available, I would appreciate it if anyone has any solutions for me besides upgrading the internal HD. Thanks. smile.gif

i not sure what u suggesting.. if let say considering the transfer rates..

1394a = 400mbps
USB 2.0 = 480mbps
NAS = 100mbps depends on network..

but still for more convenient usb 2.0 is ok for portable..
alot of system have usb 2.0.. easy to move around..
i would be happy if usb3 is everywhere..

yup it's rated that way.. though some might claimed usb 2.0 have overhead data involved and reducing the transfer rate..
but still the different not so obvious..

unless the device using 1394b which rated as 800mbps..
or.. if vnair mentioned about usb is the old usb then.. it's totally out of league.. 12mbps rclxub.gif

The difference between FW 400 and USB 2 is obvious when I conducted a test on WD MyBook Essential via HDtune. USB fluctuates a lot while on FW the graph is a lot more stable... and closer to the max theoretical speed. I'll post the graph if I can find it in the PC at my office.

vnair, is your iMac equipped with a Firewire 800 port?

Hi guys, i looking for external HDD...

comparing between WD Element & Buffalo Drive Station...
which 1 recommended for heavy usage or performance bcos i planned to plug it to my media player...

sense due to heat concerned, DS have the exhaust fan may good for HDD
but as checked around seem that DS have the weird Start Up noise, worrying the mechanical damaging my movies... sweat.gif

or any brand recommended?

I wouldn't call it 'heavy usage' or 'performance' if you intend to use it primarily with your media player. tongue.gif

Between those 2 models I would pick the Buffalo because it looks nicer. Performance wise, if any, is negligible, especially if you use USB 2. Warranty wise, both offer 3 years, I think?

I would recommend any other brands except for Seagate because of the firmware fiasco with their internal 3"5 drives. Don't care if their drives are now okay or whatever, had a really bad experience with them and that's it. sweat.gif

That's why, as a person not bitten by the Seagate firmware fiasco, I'm going to say to ignore that specific advice and buy what you think is the best for you. Seagate currently has no firmware problem.

One idea to consider is to later replace the USB 2.0 casing with a USB 3.0 casing. It will cost you and likely also your warranty, but that will unlock your hard drive's performance.

But media storage drives really don't require much performance at all as even the slow USB 2.0 data transfer is more than sufficient for Full HD playback. On the other hand, those with fast access times might be more pleasant if you have hundreds or thousands of files in a single folder. It will be most noticeable with SSDs, except that SSDs are luxury items for mere storage and have crappy capacities.

Not yet has a Seagate external hard disk that failed. Had to agree that WD 2.5" external is cute. Also WD AV is the only certified for Byond PVR. I still choose Seagate FreeAgent Go extra 2 years is handy.

It's at Viewnet, RM 194 only.
Samsung is pushing their HDD prices as low as possible with Quality and Performance.
This causes the other brands got no choice but to lower their prices too. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Not sure. Why don't you pay a visit?
I know that the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD is selling about RM 200(should be lesser) as standard in LYP currently.
If Viewnet doesn't have it, then, try C-Zone, Cycom, Prestige IT and so on?

Hi guys, i looking for external HDD...

comparing between WD Element & Buffalo Drive Station...
which 1 recommended for heavy usage or performance bcos i planned to plug it to my media player...

sense due to heat concerned, DS have the exhaust fan may good for HDD
but as checked around seem that DS have the weird Start Up noise, worrying the mechanical damaging my movies... sweat.gif

or any brand recommended?
*
My opinion is to get a HDD docking station and buy the internal HDD, This way you can capitalize on the low prices of these bare bones HDD and able to buy a few more additional HDDs.

actually HDD enclosure + internal HDD wont different much with ready external HDD...
RM80 + RM200 (1TB) = RM280, same as 1TB of ready external HDD
i puzzled around lowyat almost 1hour+ when Sunday which type i prefer & think... doh.gif sweat.gif rclxub.gif

later i saw the hornetek enclosure used at Sri Computer with media player demo unit...
damm sweet with blue LED with black case and matched with my black TV cabinet with blue lighting... drool.gif

Hornetek selling at Sri computer RM129 and Viewnet RM119, cheaper than garage sales...
but RM119 for enclosure only... fu....... just go ahead...

looking to Samsung 1TB at Cycom RM194, last unit just sold... end up buy from Czone Rm200 sad.gif

spent another RM30 compare to ready external HDD, that money can eat 5 times McD lunch value... sigh...

but overall the Hornetek seem more responsive compare to cheapo enclosure... bcos my cheapo enclosure + 500Gb (SATA) required 5 seconds to recognized by my laptop, but use same cheapo enclosure + 80Gb (PATA) required 1-2 seconds only... thought HDD size does matter... tried Hornetek + 1TB (SATA) thought will be slower, but surprise my laptop recognize it 1-2 seconds too... smile.gif

Yes you're right.
Agree with what you're saying.

Yea the Hornettek enclosure is a very good one, I have 2 of them and they're nice.
Now I'm waiting for the Hornettek Viper U3 (USB 3.0) to come to Malaysia, should be here sometime in August or September.

Get that and get that cheapo MSI USB 3.0 PCI-e card (RM49 lol) and woohoo... flex.gif

Hi guys,

Those who is thinking to buy an external harddisk can check out the WD booth at Times Square.

I bought my 500GB Passport for only RM269. smile.gif

I was quite tempted to buy the 8TB NAS also... but I'm having some financial woes... so I have to forgo it. cry.gif

Cheapest 2TB internal hdd = Less than RM 500

2000 GB / RM 500 = 4.0 GB/RM, ratio more than 2.00, so kira murah lah tu tongue.gif

RM 1 get 4 GB, if buy a thumbdrive 4GB? LOL

Go for WD green biggrin.gif

Hello all need some pointers b4 buying a new external drive for my media files connected to a media player.

1)Is Samsung reliable brand for hard drive?

2) If you have to pick between these two which one would you go for
a) Samsung G3 3.5 External Hard Drive 1.5TB @ RM365.00
or
b) Samsung Internal Drive 1.5TB @ RM265.00 + Enclosure

or would you suggest any other solutions which amounting around RM400 or less smile.gif tight budget.

Thanks in advance.

Dunno about other model but been using the F3 HD103SJ 1TB for 6 month already. It is cheaper, faster and runs cooler than WD Green.

Excuse me guys.

I have been forced to change my notebook hdd months ago due to the hdd failed to boot up. Since I'm reinstalling OS in another laptop , i have the time to try the Failed HDD as a external drive via USB.

It able to detect the Recover partition , but not the main C: drive. After awhile , it shows the C: drive , but i'm unable to click into the folder. It'll just hang there.

Could it be due to bad sector ? Is there any ways to repair it ?

Hope you guys could lend a helping hand.
Thank you!

Have you tried diagnosing your hard drive for bad sectors and SMART errors with test tools such as HDDscan and CrystalDiskInfo? Bad sectors can be replaced with reserve pool sectors via low-level format tools, check for tools from your hard drive's manufacturer.

Samsung 1GB SATA 2 izzit detected as SATA 3 Gbps with HWinfo?

All my Seagate SATA2 500GB 16MB cache detected as SATA 1.5Gbps only even though in website clearly stating it is SATA2 3 Ggps.

So, next harddisk purchase definitely not Seagate.

Well... because PC Fair, technically isn't the place the suppliers are using to sell stuff cheap (okay you can score some nice deals here and there, but not everywhere of course).
Its a place they use to clear out their inventory yet selling at the price roughly the same as before the week PC fair starts, so they don't lose too much profit yet still get to clear out their intventory.

U can check the cpu-z validation page got my mobo info.

I've been using GA-X48-DQ6, GA-Q35M-S2 and now using MSI P43-C51.

All three board detects my Seagate HDD 500GB SATA2 running only 1.5Gps or SATA1. I know its not the board problem since I got 1 WD 500GB Green which detected running in SATA2 3Gps mode. Maybe I will post a screenshot of HWInfo later. So far no problem using the HDD, with HWInfo and Sisoft SANDRA, I can see the true mode for my HDDs. I've tried to use AHCI mode but still detects as Sata 1.5GB.

BTW, I got 4 HDDs: (2 x 500GB Seagate, 1 x 320GB Seagate & 1 WD Green 500GB). Maybe wanna sell all Seagate then change to 2TB HDD. Casing too heavy with HDDs.

I think you're right.

I just double checked, I have one of my Seagate drives the same as yours.
Mine is also running at 1.5Gbps...

IIRC.. I heard something about the 7200.10 drives, despite being stated as SATA 2, it isn't.

So... yea.

Sata I (1.5Gb/s) or Sata II (3.0Gbb/s) make no difference one actually, HDD capability itself never able to fill up the 1.5Gb/s aka the speed is capped by the HDD output itself, not the Sata interface.

So Sata I HDD may faster than Sata II one.

For the curious, SATA 1.5 Gbps is 150 MByte/s. Very few hard disks can hit beyond that and most still averages below 100 MByte/s.

i can accept that the performance of sata 1 & 2 has not very much different in real world.

can't really accept they said its SATA 2 but actually hardware running SATA 1 only.

Feels like driving a Proton Satria with Mitsubishi Evo logo on it.

i can accept that the performance of sata 1 & 2 has not very much different in real world.

can't really accept they said its SATA 2 but actually hardware running SATA 1 only.

Feels like driving a Proton Satria with Mitsubishi Evo logo on it.
*
LOL,

Actually don't care much about Sata I,II,III for ordinary HDDs, more a marketing gimmick only.

Just like you build a highway that enable your car to run at 300km/h, but you car max top speed is 100km/h.

Only when use SSD, then you need Sata II interface because Sata I (1.5Gb/s) is not enough.

Haha yes cherroy.
But its just the matter of not getting what you paid for...

Not a big deal since this isn't a big issue as theres no speed difference what so ever.

Which hdd brand currently become favourites? I used to like buying maxtor, but it becomes old now and unreliable from what I heard. Haven't bought internal harddisk for years now, thinking of buying a 1TB Samsung... Is there any better harddisk out there?

Western Digital and Seagate comes to my mind.....I personally uses WD for all my HDDs and so far, I can say they are pretty reliable.

Don't think you have much choice as HDD are mainly dominate by Seagate Or WD ... you still can find other brands but not sure its reliable enough in terms of after sales service; means Warranty....

You can use "CHKDSK /R" in command prompt (WinXP,Vista,7) to locate bad sector. At the end of processing there will be a summary report.

Use "CHKDSK /?" for more options

was looking for external HDD. seems like now the case are moving the usb3.0.

at first, was looking at seagate goflex, but the usb3.0 cable accesories is way too expensive..RM1xx just the cable alone to convert to usb3.

seems the current model on usb3 are trascend and buffalo, any views on this.

prefer to have usb3 + cable management if possible.

the problem is, currently my os is in my seagate, and it bottlenecks my pc's performance as it only runs at 5400rpm. would u think its a good idea if i just put my os in samsung f3 or wd green? thanks

Great thing I find about the Seagate DiscWizard is that it takes hell alot faster to clone your HDD than any other image cloning software.
And also, Seagate's DiscWizard is actually based (and powered) by Acronis... one of the best image cloning software around.

I have been using external drive Imation Apollo which uses Samsung 500Gb internally and has had warranty replacement twice because of hardisk block errors over a period of 1 year.
And the failures comes without any warning or indications of impeding failures.
The latest warranty claim has been replaced with Imation Apollo II which uses a Japanese (either Toshiba or Hitachi) drive. I hope it does not fail again.
So although the current prices for Samsung disk are very tempting I still have a phobia about Samsung harddisk products.

Is it safe to send the hard disk for warranty claim?

I mean, they will try to repair the hard disk and if they managed to repair the hard disk, they can retrieve all your data and probably sell them to the underworld.

If they don't repair the hard disk, how do they dispose it?
Do they destrop it and dispose or just throw them away?

If they go for recycle, those guys will try to slavage the hard disk and if they managed to recover the hard disk, they can retrieve all your data from the hard disk and probably sell them to the underworld.

I read that someone managed to recover a hard disk and found data from a bank with all the customers account information. Not sure this news is true or not. This is not what we want.

Big company normally will delete/format the HDD before send to warranty.

But nowaday what I see those big company do is they never try to repair the HDD if spoil. They just took the hammer, smach it to make sure the HDD cannot repair or recover.

But only the EcoGreen ones, the spinpoint series has now stabilized in prices and will stay that way for a few more weeks.

By end of August, you'll see 1.5TB at the RM220 range.

Maybe not even the same hard disk. If you kept track of the serial number, you can tell if they give you another hard disk as a replacement or fixed your hard disk. The last time I RMAed a hard disk, the serial number of the returned drive was different.

Don't know about the particular news you read, but it is very possible. Undeleting files is easy, limited only by luck or if the file was securely deleted.

You can also do that with NTFS IF you have Paragon NTFS installed on your Mac.
If the disk is a macdisk, you can use MacDrive instead.
They're not freewares however...

ooh.. if you download HD movies, have huge multimedia programs like 3D Max, premier and stuff and have big games like wow, (uses about 17gigs of my Hard Disk space) SC2, etc, you'll find that it is easily used up.

Very true. I have already filled up >10TB of space with my DVD and BD rips, and I have only done about half of my video collection. Haven't even started on my CD collection yet (plan to rip/encode to FLAC and MP3).

I have one running 5x2TB WD Green (in SPAN mode) and 2x1TB WD Green (in SPAN mode) off a E7400 + Asus P5N7A-VM, running Vista HP (32-bit) since I have a spare licence. This rig serves as my backup server. I use SPAN mode to create a large block of HD space without redundancy, as this will act as backup storage only (the main storage will be in a RAID-5 array).

I will soon be replacing the CPU/mobo with an unused Q8200 + Gigabyte EP45-UD3P since I plan on using the E7400 plus the mATX P5N7A-VM to build a NAS into my unused SG-01 casing (plan on 5x2TB HDs, 2 in the internal drive bays, 3 in a IcyDock 3-in-2 removable drive cage in the external drive bays). I have started to look around at FreeNAS to run this NAS, and the possibility of using a CF-to-IDE adapter to boot the OS off a CF card via the IDE port. This NAS would be headless and kept in my store-room next to my main home switch.

My main server should be completed by this week, as I just need to pickup a good HSF (thinking of TR's Venomous-X) and a cheap GPU (Radeon 5450 possibly) to power 2 monitors. I will be running 2x2TB WD Black (OS + fast HD for video ripping/encoding), and 8x2TB WD Green in RAID-5 off an Areca RAID controller. I know of the possible TLER issues with the Greens, but the RE4s cost twice as much, and at current prices, the additional cost is RM3.2K. So I am hoping that since I also have a full backup in my other rig and I hope I can change the timeout settings on the Areca controller, things should be ok. CPU is a i7-870 with Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P mobo and 8GB of Kingston VR. I've mounted 2 units of IcyDock's 5-in-3 removable HD cage in my CM Stacker casing, and plan to add a 3-in-2 cage as well for another 3 HDs. So in theory, I should have 14TB of RAID-5 storage now, with another 4TB (less what the OS takes up) of fast storage (off the WD Blacks) to speed up my rips/encodes. Potentially another 6TB of storage once I get myself down to Singapore to get my IcyDock drive cage. The OS will be Win7 HP (64-bit) at present, though I will consider using Windows Home Server v2 when it is finally launched.

I will also use my new server to test the CF-to-IDE adapter (using 2x16GB Kingston 133x CF cards) for possible use on the NAS.

Your NAS look complicating. rclxub.gif

I m using synology NAS with 4x2TB raid 5. And a 1x2TB + 1x1TB media player network to NAS. All the storage already 70% full. I keep the rig simple. Important is using less power. My next expanding should be another 4x2TB raid 5 enclosure to joint to the NAS.

Looks nice but after factoring cost of tools and resources (plus skills), probably end up costing more than just buying a cheap roomy casing and plugging in all the HDs.

Not that complicated lah:

I have NAS Rig#1 (E7400 on Asus mATX mobo) with 12TB storage (5x2TB WD Green in SPAN mode, 2x1TB WD Green in SPAN mode) running Vista HP (32bit) at current time. The Asus mATX mobo has 5 SATA ports only, and I am currently using a PCIe x1 SATA controller with 2 SATA ports.

I will build NAS Rig#2 (using NAS Rig#1's CPU and mobo) with 10TB storage (5x2TB WD Green or similar HD) in a small compact SG-01 casing. I want to try using a CF card as the OS drive (via the IDE port). Plan to try using FreeNAS as the OS.

Having taken out NAS Rig#1's CPU and mobo, I will use my spare CPU/mobo (Q8200, Gigabyte EP45-UD3R), as its new CPU/mobo, which will allow me to add the 8th HD as the Gigabyte mobo has 8 SATA ports).

Am currently building my main server with 18TB storage (8x2TB WD Green in RAID-5 = 14TB, 2x2TB WD Black = 4TB) using a i7-870 and Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P mobo. I use an Areca RAID controller to hook up the 8 RAID drives, and the rest I use the onboard SATA ports (2x2TB WD Black, 2x BD optical drives, 3x future HDs, 1x spare). Plan to use Win 7 HP as the OS now, and may change to WHS v2 when that is released. Maybe I should post a pic after I finish assembling the PC this week, so it will be less complicated smile.gif

I also have a Synology DS408 NAS (4x1TB in RAID-5 = 3TB) and a D-Link DNS 323 (plan to put in two old 160GB SATA drives, as this NAS is VERY slow). After I filled up the 3TB on the DS408 in a very short period of time, I decided to go all out and build my main server.

For the SPAN mode, is it NTFS volume based? If one disk fails, will the rest still works?

Yes it is NTFS volume based. Theoretically, if one disk fails, we may be able to recover the rest, but I would, for safety's sake, assume a total loss. Normally, I wouldn't even consider it, but for backup storage on a rig that is only switched on for backups, I find it quite acceptable, especiallly when the main storage is on a RAID-5 array.

Most are WD due to price and so far in past 2 years, WD has been very reliable, while I had a new 1TB Seagate HD fail on me (lucky it was in a RAID-5 array, so I managed to rebuild with a new drive; Seagate RMA was easily and painless, and I received my refurbished replacement drive soon after). Haven't bought any Samsungs as I figured for my 8-disc RAID-5 array I would stick to the tried and tested. But I am keen to try them out, so may consider them for the additional HDs I will be buying (subject to the price remaining at good levels).

I expect the CF-IDE drive to be slow, but hopefully not too slow. As I only plan to use it in a NAS, I hope it will be ok. In any case, it's just an experiment I am running now, to see if it works well. As I have 2x 16GB CF cards there, I am tempted to see if I can run it in RAID-0 to speed things up.

I just assembled my main server last night, with almost everything hooked up except for the HDs and a few minor items.

Ouch.

Perhaps there might be an outside influence like an underpowered or ageing PSU? They can damage your HDD when the HDD loses power at critical moments.

WD has been demonstrate how their technology in the read/write head to prevent collision with the platter, but if it's power failure that caused the bad sectors, I wonder what WD will do about their "marketing"?

emmmm... i doubt it has anything to do with the PSU... the fact that they are "green" drives and consume 4-5w less vs the other drives in my rig makes me think maybe it has something to do with the fact that they are GREEN tongue.gif

and i have hdds from every other manufacturer including buffalo/samsung, hitachi, seagate and an aging 250gb WD running a-ok hmm.gif

I have two Caviar Greens myself, but the older WD10EADS models. No problems after I RMAed one of them for a possible PSU related failure.

When idle WD Green seems to lower its spin to save power. It lags when you try to access data from the HDD.

I bought WD green 500GB and it bricks after a month with no burnt marks, smell etc. Luckily can swap 1-to-1 from shop. Too bad data already lost.

It has nothing to do with green version or not.

It just could be a bad batch only.

Har?
What are you talking about?
What do you mean I discount? I'm not even a seller nor a distributor.

The prices are from viewnet.
Don't belief me? SEE THIS: http://viewnet.com.my/file/Pricelist.pdf

Still don't belief? CALL THEM: (603)-2145 2545

If you even bothered to check the last thread in V2, the last several pages you'll see the prices has dropped below RM200.
Get your own facts right. Don't act smart just because you think you are and call me cheapskate in the process. sleep.gif

He is NOT the seller.
The price is in fact cheaper than this "RM5 discount". It is actually "RM6 discount". laugh.gif - RM194 according to viewnet's latest price list. (21-7-2010)

Either you put a bigger case fan that blows the hard disk or the best bet would be investing in a good case. I've seen some cases that has 200mm fan at the front. Imagine the airflow. brows.gif

guys, a question:

the transfer speeds of external hdd, does it depend on the casing?

like, are there any difference between cap ayam cases and those that come with the casing by default?

for example, i have this Cliptec case with a 640 gb WD 2.5" caviar blue inside. how would it compare to the WD Passport 2.5" drive?

thanks!

Try to benchmark it, if around 30MB/s, it doesn't really matter much.

Because SSDs are a lot harder to make than HDDs and the next generation of SSD technology isn't quite in place yet. As for 'insider' information, it's well known that Intel is working on releasing it's 3rd gen stuff in the second half of the year. When Intel released their 2nd gen stuff, prices dropped 60%, so hopefully something similar will happen for the 3rd gen.

Its normal when next gen stuffs come out for electronic products. When I searching for SSD, their prices are still expensive. When I'm thinking I could get 2 1TB drives and RAID0 them for the price of 1 SSD, I simply stopped the mind of getting SSD. Somemore I get 1 TB vs 40GB. ohmy.gif

multiple files averaging around 8-10 MBps

so, do these values differ much from the "ready-made" external hdds?

A good SSD will still crush a RAID 4x 1TB array in raw performance like boot speeds. The best way to utilise SSDs is to buy only one for your OS, applications and games partition. Use cheaper huge capacity HDDs for your data storage like audio, video and pictures.

FidelisGVR, for multiple files, HDD performance usually suffers greatly, because their access times are very slow.

Yes, I agree. SSDs are strong in access time. Still, the cost/performance, HDD is still leading including cost/storage size.

I was hoping 80GB or more will be more affordable. 40GB/64Gb is too small for general use. Especially when there are many large programs and files generated by those programs. You always don't want your HDD shown in red color indicate few more GBs available.

Yeah. e-sata is quite hard to find. I think USB 3.0 will dominate for the next gen spec.

@mikelim, there are many brands available. Just get those famous one like WD, Seagate, Buffalo etc. Get 2.5" one, 3.5 is simply too big to carry around, unless you want external storage solution for your desktop. icon_rolleyes.gif

if im not mistaken, for ssd you need to allocate ~20% free space, so that the drive wont suffer from performance degradation.

so if 80gb less 20% free space, actual can use until 64gb only, before taking a performance hit. sweat.gif

Since you don't mind the dimension get a 3.5" one, better value for money.
Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 (HD103SJ) = RM 181 (Jayacom)

Nexstar CX (NST-300S2-BK) = RM 75 (LYN traders)

Total = RM256

e-sata has a limitation, it can't power up the drive..., thus, you need to have a USB and e-sata port

It doesn't make sense for a 2.5" to have e-sata. That's why you see little 2.5" come with it.
2.5" main function is portability and ease to use.
With e-sata, you either need adapter to power up the hdd, or need to use USB as power supply source. Either one means less portability and troublesome already.

For 3.5" yes, e-sata is useful.

That used to be the case on 1st gen SSDs (especially those based on Intel) which doesn't support the TRIM command.
So the issue becomes that the drive will get a performance hit over time, wherter or not if you allocate ~20% of space.

These days, SSDs which has the TRIM command doesn't suffer from this issue.
Indilinx, Marvell and Sandforce based SSDs all have the TRIM command supporterd under Windows 7.

However the biggest issue now for SSD (aside from its price obviously), is that Sandforce based SSDs (which provides some of the fastest SSD around the market) suffers from file compression.
Earlier this year, SSDs that are built with the Sandforce controller would come on the pack saying it has 128GB of storage space but really the actual formatted space that you get is only 93GB or so.

The issue is getting resolved now, but Sandforce based SSDs despite being one of the fastest and probably the best value for money (other than cheapo Indilinx Barefoot Eco controllers) still does suffer from the file compression issue.

Heads up guys.

Wanna know why Samsung's 1TB F3 is bloody cheap at Jayacom? (RM181)

They're OEM drives. I bought 3 units today and checked the serials online, and got this:
CODE
Code 101   This product is a component of a system (OEM).
Please contact the system's manufacturer for service.

The ones I bought at viewnet however, gives a code 100 (This product is under warranty. )

The drives come without the usual plastic housing and 4 screws. Instead you'll get a normal anti static bag. Oh and the warranty is a mere 1 year from the shop... not sure if it is possible to RMA directly to Samsung after that though. With Seagate I've managed to RMA some OEM drives... gonna ask Samsung about this.

The drives however are fine so far.

CF to IDE, would it be slow,
*
Results of my ad-hoc testing using 2x 16GB Kingston 133x CF cards in RAID-0 on a CF-to-IDE adapter (BIOS recognizes two drives, RAID-0 setup under Win7 as BIOS does not support RAID for the IDE channels):

Files used: 4.6GB of DVD rip files
Read (from CF cards to WD Black): 42MB/s
Write (from WD Black to CF cards): 9MB/s

As expected the write speed was quite slow, while the read speed was actually not bad. I would imagine if I didn't RAID the cards, the speed would have been much slower.

Samsung's hot 1TB F3 is now RM189 at Viewnet... and they're not the OEM version so you'll get the nice and rare plastic housing plus 4 screws for each drive you purchase. biggrin.gif

*
how did u check the serials online? and how many digits are the numbers? check from the plastic housing or on the hdd itself?

when i bought from them few days ago, i did get the plastic housing + 4 screws:

Check here:
http://www.samsunghddvalue.com/WebRMA/WarrantyCheck/

The serial number is on the drive. Check the status of your drive and post it here.
Since you got the plastic housing and screws... yours might not be OEM. hmm.gif

Did they tell you anything about the warranty?

Little difference.

A blue 16mb is still way fast than a 64mb green.

Just initial burst speed difference only.

WD 64mb is an Advance Format Drive with a 4k sector size. If you plan to use it on Win XP, you need to download a utility from WD to align the drives or it will crawl like a baby biggrin.gif

Same tech as the HD103SJ?

Actually I'm looking forward to some thing like the Spinpoint F3 1Tb but in 2TB flavor, any Sifu can recommend?

Also which external HDD have shock proof and capacity at or above 500GB? Brand and cost?

No at the moment, 1.5TB and 2TB currently only available in EG (Eco Green) model, and it's running at 5,400rpm.
If you want speed and capacity of 2TB, take Western Digital Carviar Black 2TB.

If it is WD, just submit RMA at WDC.COM , but be careful to assemble back the hard disk and case.

yup very dangerous because its RAID-0 2TB, but considering the performance of f3 hdds would like to try tongue.gif.

If RAID-0 for much smaller harddisk is safer or put it this way, RAID 0+1. Mirror + striping

most hard disk consume less than 10W (including WD Black), so it doesn't run hot.

it think 10 watt for power rating. how about temperature?

normally in our country and environment, operating temperature could kill the HDD.

From WD website:

Operating 32° F to 140° F

So far in my dual 5-in-3 drive enclosure (80mm fan at the back, exhausting into case) that is stacked on top of each other, my drives are showing temps between 37C-43C. Drives are 1x WD Black, 4x WD Green in each enclosure. The Greens are RAIDed so when I access my RAIDed drive, all 8 Greens will run. So far so good, no heat issues.

It should be a myth for normal hard disk. For SSD, if without TRIM, it will reduce wear level each format

Any of you running RAID-5 mind sharing what your transfer rates are, for comparison purposes?
I don't have much to compare yet, just a network-based file copy (since its a huge one, needs time to finish)

I'm running 8x 2TB WD Green (WD20EARS) in RAID-5 on an Areca ARC-1222 controller (Win 7 HP 64-bit).

LAN-based transfer over 1Gbps LAN from another PC, 4x 2TB WD Green (WD20EARS) in SPAN mode to the local RAID-5 array, using Windows file copy from mapped drive
Total transfer size: 6.69TB (estimated total transfer time: 24 hours) - entirely video files in .avi, .mkv, and BD/DVD rip directories.

Average transfer rate: 74.9MB/s (as measured after 2.18TB has been transferred)
My NIC is showing I am using around 700Mbps of the LAN bandwidth, so not sure if the LAN is saturated (with the remainder used by the LAN overhead) or if the bottleneck is the RAID-5 write speed or the source SPAN array (my guess is that it's either the RAID-5 write speed or the LAN is saturated).

Once this is completed, I will try some other combinations like WD Black -> RAID 5 (same computer) and then in reverse, to get a read-based transfer rate.

Hi, you got a really nice Areca ARC-1222. may I know where do you buy it? A quick lookup it is hovering 400usd sweat.gif

Getting 74.9MB/s is great.

I bought it at this out-of-the-way shop in Sim Lim Square (Singapore) - think it was TakNet, they cater mostly to businesses but I dropped by and they had a whole range of Areca and Promise RAID cards. I don't have the receipt here with me, but I remember paying around S$700 for it plus some accessory cables (before GST refund of $34).

don't be disheartened... hahaha...

the good about the wd greens... they are super quiet and green (as in low power consumption) if you plan on saving the earth and mankind. the bad is that i'm on my third rma... and i didn't even get to run any torture tests on them yet!!! fortunately they come with 3 years warranty whistling.gif

Yeap, its a great deal.
Considering that it is a 7200.12 Barracuda under that, it is a better deal than the WD Elements... if you're looking at speed alone.

Its the name of that Seagate external HDD.
Stupid name I know.

So its always confusing going around to say "I want a Seagate expansion external drive".
Most salesmen would just bring you the raptor or Go Flex version instead. doh.gif

Viewnet and Cycom.
However, understand that it is the drive only.

WD Passports are still around the RM200 range.

Good time to buy HDDs though, as I'm expecting a slight bit of shortage after PC fair.
Seagate Expansion 1TB only selling for RM239 now, RM10 less from the week before lol.

check from the SSD manufacturer, I reckon it does need Windows 7 to have TRIM

Eg. it does state it support TRIM http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/soli...sata_ii_2_5-ssd

Ah you see the USB port at the casing?
Just buy the same USB connector head on both end, you can easily find this at any computer shops.
If you afraid that might not work, try borrowing from friends that has such cable.
Hope that helps. icon_rolleyes.gif

guys...im thinking of getting 1.5tb HDDs for my htpc....mainly to store downloaded files... and they will be running 24/7 in my htpc/download rig.

ill be downloading into another 1tb drive... and extracting the rar files into the 1.5tb.

so the 1.5tb will only see minor writes... some reads and thats about it.

any suggested HDDs?

speed and low power consumption would be nice...

A good read. Click the below link for more ... smile.gif

In 3 Years, Your HDD Will Hold 100TB or More

Who doesn't want more storage?

Consistent capacity growth in hard disk drives (HDDs) has become something we take for granted. It isn’t so trivial if you think about the fact that there are in fact physical limits to how much data you can store on one disk and every now and then we are nearing a limit that can’t be topped anymore. The last limit was hit in 2005 and the next seems to be arriving in the 2013 – 2015 timeframe. However, a new technology breathes new life into HDDs. HAMR will bring massive storage growth and propel the industry far beyond 100 TB.

how good is the samsung 1.5tb hdd? hows the speed of these HDDs?

i already have the wd green 1tb...and after about a year of heavy downloading...the HDD is super friggin slow now...

if im extracting a rar file, itll practically cease all other writes in process...downloads will practically go to 0kbps and extraction will take forever.

That's very unusual and might be indicative of more serious problems. The only "aging" sign should be heavy disk fragmentation. But even at its worst shouldn't exhibit this level of a performance problem.

Good news for those hardcore downloaders. nod.gif

But frequent backup is needed to avoid TOTAL big lost of datas if the hd decides to give up.

Anyway, hoping the 2tb hds to drop to around 300 bucks though by the end of this year. tongue.gif

guy i have an infamous 1TB seagate that recently decided just give up on me.
It was flashed to SD1A from SD15 and works fine for some period of time, but suddenly it just not detactable anymore and making the clicking noise once power is connected (I am using it as external with HDD dock).

Does this mean that my HDD is totally dead?

I did tried to plug into my PC directly with PSU and the same results appears.

Sounds like it's dead, especially with the dreaded clicking noise. From my experience so far, when a drive makes clicking noise it's a certain death.

Recover service is very expensive, unless yours is those very important files that can't be replaced. Else, get 2 new HDDs and make RAID1 in future, the failure of both HDDs are much lower.

My brand new 320gb that I bought few months back also got that klak klak sound when during POST. Well, don't seem to have any bad sectors or hangups so far. Monitoring it using hdtune though now.

Are you having only 1 hard disk? Better to have a large capacity hard disk for backups. Even better you backup datas throughout many computers. icon_rolleyes.gif

Want reliability?
Backup.

It is not right to pro-claim which brand is more reliable than the others, as the actual defective/RMA rate is never being published or known.

For reliability AND speed, you just can't go wrong with SSDs. tongue.gif

For anything else, you'll need at least two HDDs.

No such thing for data reliability, but personally believe Made In Thailand > Made In China, guess Samsung is Made In Korea & WD is Made In Malaysia. *P/S: beside HDD, others china make PC parts all I can accept. biggrin.gif

Because my HDD kong is Hitachi which labeled "Made In China", others Hitachi / Seagate all "Made In Thailand".

Always monitor the HDD temperature to keep it longer life span, add fan for it, do pc inner clean up at least half year.

I repost at here, as I find many misunderstand about the failure rate issue. It is not about Seagate HDD failed more than 50% or WD HDD failed 19%.

QUOTE
WD got 30% market share, but failure % is 19%.

So assume there is 10000 hdd out there.
While there assume there is 100 HDD reported fail, (out of 10000 hdd).

WD sells 3000 hdd, 19 defective hdd is from them 19%
Samsung sells 900 hdd, 7 defective hdd is from them 7%

The 19% is not the failure rate of WD aka if WD sells 3000, the total failed hdd is not 3000 x 19%.
19% is just the amount of total failed HDD collected that belonged to them.

There's no such thing as perfect reliability, not even the most perfect machine in the world does.
That's why there's RAID technology, to overcome such issue. whistling.gif

Less power consumption.

Some claimed less power consumption, lower heat -> more reliable.
Some also claimed less platter, less prone to Hdd failure, as you need either 1/4 platter to fail, then whole hdd might not be used anymore as compared 1/3.

Higher density, lower seek time.

But I would say, all above are negligible effect.

For computer hardware, always buy what you need time.
Don't need future proof, nor wait for newer stuff.

Wait for F4 time, may wait for F5, and forever waiting.... laugh.gif

Somebody high above you has given you another opportunity to retrieve your data. Take it!

Maybe it's 'alive' for now because it was from a cold boot. Once the drive warms up, the problems might come back again. This behaviour is what I used to retrieve what I could from one of my HDDs before having to RMA it.

agree, read some way back in years that, a remedy that putting hard disk in a sealed pack, in fridge box, and after some other time, and pray for it works.

Hello, which capacity HDD is worth buying now?Is that rational to buy a 1TB than a 1.5TB HDD fill it up and wait for the HDD price to drop further before purchasing a bigger capacity HDD?
What is the price for 1TB and 1.5TB HDD now,cz the price list doesn't update for sometimes.

FYI, 2TB is the capacity if you really looking into value per byte.
The price will definitely drop, like how I bought my 2TB just 2 months ago with RM4xx, now only RM3xx or much less, cheaper by RM30~50, almost faint-hearted. doh.gif
If you looking at cheapest, I would recommend Samsung drive, they offer 3 years warranty, same as others right now. drool.gif

my friend just bought 2TB Seagate 3.5" FreeAgent Desk at lowyat yesterday. The cheapest we can find is RM430. Try go at Viewnet, you can nego the price coz they have price margin. But, if you want cheaper there is Seagate Expansion and Hitachi ones.

I think the price for 1.5TB back in July is around RM280 for Samsung F2.How is the price for 1TB and 1.5TB for those HDD manufacture, the price list seem like outdated. notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

you go whole world also only got this color. its silverish-white body with white illuminating led.

if want black color go buy Seagate Expansion only RM420 i think. but i dont recommend coz many reviews said its prone to failure.

Hitachi also is black color but its a newcomer in external HDD, so not much known about its reliability. But its cheap, im not sure if its still around in Lowyat.

Theres also Buffalo. If im not mistaken its RM400 only at All IT. But the design is a bit ugly for my preference.

IMHO, overall Freeagent Desk wins coz got 5 years warranty.

The bigger is always the better. Invest in 2TB. Got my 2tb seagate external last Nov. Now it's like, left 300+g. You'll never know when you will run out of space! biggrin.gif

I'm just waiting for the 2TB to breach lesser than 300 bucks mark before getting one for backup purposes.

I dunno about Buffalo but its a popular brand for 2.5" external. From the picture, the casing looked glossy but when i saw the display set last time its not. Also i forgot there is also WD Mybook Essential, it looks classy, although abit pricey.

Here's the spec for it. Seagate 3TB External HDD

Unfortunately, it seems that it will stay as external HDD for now. Amazon currently selling it for £399.99.

I'm hoping to get 1TB HDD about RM150 by the end of this year rclxms.gif

Standard off-the-mill external HDD.
It does take a little bit of space though you don't use the stand and decide to place it vertically.

More like... the consumers does not want to change, thus manufacturers don't care in implementing proper technology on their mobos.

It is as same as 64 bit issue.

When there is little advantage of shifting to newer hardware/tech/OS, then there is little reason for people to fork out extra money for it.

It has to do with cost wise as well on both front, customers and manufacturers.

Yup primary issue is about OS issue.

BIOS.

That's why external come out first.
As in normal circumstance, it is always internal first.

32 bit OS also needs to throw out of window aka XP only recognise 990MB out of 3TB.
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/HDD-LBA-G...UEFI,10436.html

The hardware is hitting some limitation, and need to overhaul the current standard to move forward.

But I expect, it will be slow process, as same as 64 bit migration, (even 64 bit has been available for years), we are still stuck with 32 bit across even now.

As there is no urgency to use a 3TB HDD especially for OS disk, you don't require such a capacity for OS.

Correct me if I am wrong. As still new to the issue.

Some people would like to save pictures and videos over my documents folder that not redirect the folder to some other hard drive.

I started to do that instead of creating multiple partitions.

As there is no urgency to use a 3TB HDD especially for OS disk, you don't require such a capacity for OS.

Correct me if I am wrong. As still new to the issue.

so is the OS unable to address all the LBA inside a 3 TB hdd?
even with 64bit OS also can't? unsure.gif

I think that the current BIOS could be the restriction for the 3TB HDD.
If I'm not mistaken, there's actually some mobo out there already taken on the new tech and is ready to move to the next gen of HDD, I think it's just a matter of time before consumer realize it.
IMO, manufacturer should just push this tech onto their mobo, for the enthusiast level first, then slowly pushing the tech to the entry level, just like how those new tech has been doing, is it big deal? USB3, SATA3 (6.0Gbps), etc. Is consumer changing? Yes they're... slowly.

Yup primary issue is about OS issue.

BIOS.

That's why external come out first.
As in normal circumstance, it is always internal first.

32 bit OS also needs to throw out of window aka XP only recognise 990MB out of 3TB.

The BIOS is not the OS. The OS sits on top of the BIOS. They're working on replacing the old BIOS standard with another standard, EFI, that can handle 64-bit addresses; which should last at least a thousand years of capacity improvements.

It is strange that XP would only recognise 990MB out of a 3TB drive when it could handle 2TB HDDs.

It's not the OS problem. It's a hardware problem on the motherboard.

Your recommendation is what the manufacturers have been doing for the last few years, since EFI has been introduced in 2007. They say millions of machines now ship with EFI. At the least, I think all of Apple's hardware that runs on Intel processors uses EFI MBs.

Btw, I got my answer regarding AMD. Seems like they're a founding member of the board that currently administrates the UEFI. Nice and neat on that point.

so the addressing of the LBA on a hdd is done by the motherboard? unsure.gif

I am not too sure now, but should create RMA from Seagate website. If it state the return to UPS SCS, then you can bring it there with the RMA reference.

Hello, may i ask what is a performance HDD , ive been reading there's much talk about samsung F3 and WD Black

I'm looking for

1 TB- 2 TB of space
Price below 400
Performance

Reason of using : will be using for 3D software which requires a lot of rendering. Afraid of data corrupting on a hard disk.

Not thinking of velociraptor or SDD [too expensive a this both]

7200 RPM should be fine

Samsung F3 2tb i would suggest. It's 5400 rpm but don't let it's spindle speed fool you. It can walk the walk with the other 2tb 7200rpm drives out there nod.gif

Uses less watts, less noise and generates less heat as well, yet price if cheap per gig and performance almost the same as the 2tb 7200rpm drives. Whats not to like thumbup.gif

I am using for storage purposes. If you want for your OS, i would suggest using a single SSD for OS, and use the samsung for storage.

@ahsiah

Thanks but i don't think i can wait. My QNAP 659 just arrived in Malaysia. It may be sent to me today, so seems i will have to settle for the Samsung 2tb F3 :/ oh well.
