May be worthwhile to wait for the 2TB samsung then. tongue.gif

2TB section still too expensive for the time being.
*
Still that expensive?

2week ago brought 5pcs 2tb samsung for rm380/pcs. It already cheaper than WD 2tb. thumbup.gif

Is it safe to send the hard disk for warranty claim?

I mean, they will try to repair the hard disk and if they managed to repair the hard disk, they can retrieve all your data and probably sell them to the underworld.

If they don't repair the hard disk, how do they dispose it?
Do they destrop it and dispose or just throw them away?

If they go for recycle, those guys will try to slavage the hard disk and if they managed to recover the hard disk, they can retrieve all your data from the hard disk and probably sell them to the underworld.

I read that someone managed to recover a hard disk and found data from a bank with all the customers account information.  Not sure this news is true or not.  This is not what we want.

Big company normally will delete/format the HDD before send to warranty.

But nowaday what I see those big company do is they never try to repair the HDD if spoil. They just took the hammer, smach it to make sure the HDD cannot repair or recover.

How do you know they do this? Publicised company policy, news, or working there?
*
It is 1 of my big customer doing this. Also famous company in the world. It is their IT policy. When I go through their scrap item, all the HDD smach beyond using.

How big the HDD is still not enough. HDD space is always expanding.

QUOTE(Traveler @ Jul 20 2010, 11:25 AM)
I have one running 5x2TB WD Green (in SPAN mode) and 2x1TB WD Green (in SPAN mode) off a E7400 + Asus P5N7A-VM, running Vista HP (32-bit) since I have a spare licence. This rig serves as my backup server. I use SPAN mode to create a large block of HD space without redundancy, as this will act as backup storage only (the main storage will be in a RAID-5 array).

I will soon be replacing the CPU/mobo with an unused Q8200 + Gigabyte EP45-UD3P since I plan on using the E7400 plus the mATX P5N7A-VM to build a NAS into my unused SG-01 casing (plan on 5x2TB HDs, 2 in the internal drive bays, 3 in a IcyDock 3-in-2 removable drive cage in the external drive bays). I have started to look around at FreeNAS to run this NAS, and the possibility of using a CF-to-IDE adapter to boot the OS off a CF card via the IDE port. This NAS would be headless and kept in my store-room next to my main home switch.

My main server should be completed by this week, as I just need to pickup a good HSF (thinking of TR's Venomous-X) and a cheap GPU (Radeon 5450 possibly) to power 2 monitors. I will be running 2x2TB WD Black (OS + fast HD for video ripping/encoding), and 8x2TB WD Green in RAID-5 off an Areca RAID controller. I know of the possible TLER issues with the Greens, but the RE4s cost twice as much, and at current prices, the additional cost is RM3.2K. So I am hoping that since I also have a full backup in my other rig and I hope I can change the timeout settings on the Areca controller, things should be ok. CPU is a i7-870 with Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P mobo and 8GB of Kingston VR. I've mounted 2 units of IcyDock's 5-in-3 removable HD cage in my CM Stacker casing, and plan to add a 3-in-2 cage as well for another 3 HDs. So in theory, I should have 14TB of RAID-5 storage now, with another 4TB (less what the OS takes up) of fast storage (off the WD Blacks) to speed up my rips/encodes.  Potentially another 6TB of storage once I get myself down to Singapore to get my IcyDock drive cage. The OS will be Win7 HP (64-bit) at present, though I will consider using Windows Home Server v2 when it is finally launched.

I will also use my new server to test the CF-to-IDE adapter (using 2x16GB Kingston 133x CF cards) for possible use on the NAS.

Your NAS look complicating. rclxub.gif

I m using synology NAS with 4x2TB raid 5. And a 1x2TB + 1x1TB media player network to NAS. All the storage already 70% full. I keep the rig simple. Important is using less power. My next expanding should be another 4x2TB raid 5 enclosure to joint to the NAS.

SAMSUNG HD203WI

It's a 2tb 5400 rpm 32mb cache drive using 4 platter.

The Samsung F4 coming out in September 2010 is 3 platter, uses less watts, and uses safer ROHS compliant materials.

I installed 4 of the Samsung F3 HD203WI into my QNAP 659 as EXT4 raid5. No problems even after doing smart disk complete test :}
You can forget 1.5tb, and just get the Samsung hd i got. Best bang for buck and good performer for storage.

What is your HDD temperature average running in this NAS?

I leave my QNAP 659 on all day. The temperatur for the drives is between 38°C/100°F to 40°C/104°F.
Seems like normal. I have same setup with you. Using 4pcs samsung 2TB F3, raid 5 in synology NAS. All day long too. I m kind of worry about the temperature. Mind running at around 38-43c. So now look like it is normal temperature.

I heard the Hitachi 2tb 7200 rpm drive which is 5 platter if i am not mistaken, runs at a higher temperature and is noiser. Consumes more power to boot doh.gif

That was why i went with the Samsung F3 2tb instead because of a very similar performance in read/write but still beats out in those other areas.
*
I choose samsung F3 because it running lower rpm, less power and low temperature compare those 7200rpm. My thinking is, running in NAS, I don't need fast speed HDD. The important is longer lifespan and less problem. Since heat is enemy, choosing lower rpm running is better. And I run it 7/11.

Hi All,

I see there is a 2TB WD Black & 2TB WD Black RAID Edition.

May I know is there / how much performance gain if use the 2TB WD RAID Edition, when not configure to use RAID in system.

Is there any reliably issue between these 2 version ?
*
WD have some problem with non raid HDD if use as raid HDD. My NAS forum have report many case about raid problem using WD non raid HDD.

I avoid it and get the F3 2TB samsung for raid.

Is Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 suitable for File server?
I'm planning to use 2 1TB Spinpoint F3 with RAID 1 configuration for file server. It's for office usage.

Do recommend if there's any other better hard disk. At the same time, I would need another hard disk for CCTV DVR usage. Please recommend. Thanks a lot. smile.gif

I using 4pcs 2TB F3 samsung for NAS raid. 1 down and replace with the same model. The HDD still can run just not good shape for raid.

For file server, NAS or cctv, get the lowest RPM spin possible. It last longer. You don't need speed for this kind of application.
