This price is before flood? If so, seem like the price is not much higher. Merely RM40. hmm.gif

Yes, that was about the price. Here's the pricing from before that:

25 July 2011
WD Elements 3TB = RM529
WD Essential 3TB = RM549

1 August 2011
WD Elements 3TB = RM499
WD Essential 3TB = RM549

The prices were about this range until it started rising significantly in November.

1 November 2011
WD Elements 3TB = RM549
WD Essential 3TB = RM599

All taken from Viewnet price lists.

With that budget, the best you can get is 160GB - 320GB hdd. 500GB and above are out of the question. At least not at the moment when prices have increased due to the 'floods' / 'suppliers aren't able to meet the demand'.

Why not get a SSD? Add RM100+ to your budget and it'll be a good investment if you're going to be editing movies on it. Downside is, the capacity would be rather small, a mere 60GB.

joanneway, as far as i know, no one here would know whether prices would drop or not. Everyone has to wait for the news. Current news points out that the price wouldn't drop until 2013. But let us keep hoping that it will drop soon.

Nothing to worry about as these HDDs are usually given to OEMs for building computers.

It should work just as good as a retail drive. Only thing is your luck.

I don't really trust HDDs these days. I have 2 maxtor basic 1TB drives which alot of people claim are crappy but after 3 years, they're still running strong. Luckily I have about 2 years of warranty left. (They came with 5 years of warranty).

The durability of these drives would depend on your luck. Some would last you a long time, some might go dead within a year / month. Even weeks. If you read reviews on newegg, you'll know what i mean. And those who bought WD drives would tell you to stick with Seagate and those who has drives from seagate which failed would tell you to stick with WD. These could be read over on newegg. So at the end of the day, it would depend on your luck.

In my opinion, always have several drives to backup to (Mirror). I wouldn't trust OEM drives, not because of their durability but their warranty. Once it dies after 3 months, you have nothing but a very expensive paperweight on your hands.
