same here my old seagate 7200.10 400GB reported 1.5gb/s max!! hmm.gif
but it's faster thab my WB blue 3.0gb/s
*
Sata I (1.5Gb/s) or Sata II (3.0Gbb/s) make no difference one actually, HDD capability itself never able to fill up the 1.5Gb/s aka the speed is capped by the HDD output itself, not the Sata interface.

So Sata I HDD may faster than Sata II one.

i can accept that the performance of sata 1 & 2 has not very much different in real world.

can't really accept they said its SATA 2 but actually hardware running SATA 1 only.

Feels like driving a Proton Satria with Mitsubishi Evo logo on it.
*
LOL,

Actually don't care much about Sata I,II,III for ordinary HDDs, more a marketing gimmick only.

Just like you build a highway that enable your car to run at 300km/h, but you car max top speed is 100km/h.

Only when use SSD, then you need Sata II interface because Sata I (1.5Gb/s) is not enough.

It has nothing to do with green version or not.

It just could be a bad batch only.

i'm thinking of getting a 2.5" external hdd 500GB, does buffalo ext hd comes with e-sata? or any other better brands that comes with e-sata? thanks in advance
*
It doesn't make sense for a 2.5" to have e-sata. That's why you see little 2.5" come with it.
2.5" main function is portability and ease to use.
With e-sata, you either need adapter to power up the hdd, or need to use USB as power supply source. Either one means less portability and troublesome already.

For 3.5" yes, e-sata is useful.

may i know wats the difference between HDD of 32mb and 64mb??

like western digital 32mb, and 64mb is it the speed difference???

which is better?
*
Little difference.

A blue 16mb is still way fast than a 64mb green.

Just initial burst speed difference only.

Guys, which brand of HDD do you think is reliable? Hitachi/WD/Samsung? I don't want speed, just want reliability for data.
*
Want reliability?
Backup.

It is not right to pro-claim which brand is more reliable than the others, as the actual defective/RMA rate is never being published or known.

have a look here, just for REFERENCE ONLY:
Study: A Look At Hard Drive Reliability In Russia

I repost at here, as I find many misunderstand about the failure rate issue. It is not about Seagate HDD failed more than 50% or WD HDD failed 19%.

QUOTE
WD got 30% market share, but failure % is 19%.

So assume there is 10000 hdd out there.
While there assume there is 100 HDD reported fail, (out of 10000 hdd).

WD sells 3000 hdd, 19 defective hdd is from them 19%
Samsung sells 900 hdd, 7 defective hdd is from them 7%

The 19% is not the failure rate of WD aka if WD sells 3000, the total failed hdd is not 3000 x 19%.
19% is just the amount of total failed HDD collected that belonged to them.

anyone know when Samsung F4 drives reaching Malaysia? i just planned to buy 2TB but now only i realized got old news say F4 launching in US on September. Should i wait? Is it worthy to wait? what difference does 3 platter make compared to 4 platter??
*
Less power consumption.

Some claimed less power consumption, lower heat -> more reliable.
Some also claimed less platter, less prone to Hdd failure, as you need either 1/4 platter to fail, then whole hdd might not be used anymore as compared 1/3.

Higher density, lower seek time.

But I would say, all above are negligible effect.

For computer hardware, always buy what you need time.
Don't need future proof, nor wait for newer stuff.

Wait for F4 time, may wait for F5, and forever waiting.... laugh.gif

Now we know why there is no 3TB internal, you need specific mobo to support it.

More like... the consumers does not want to change, thus manufacturers don't care in implementing proper technology on their mobos.
*
It is as same as 64 bit issue.

When there is little advantage of shifting to newer hardware/tech/OS, then there is little reason for people to fork out extra money for it.

It has to do with cost wise as well on both front, customers and manufacturers.

hey, a 3TB desktop hdd cannot be a boot drive only right?
but it can be data storage drive for desktop right?

what actually address the LBA?
motherboard? processor? or other? unsure.gif
*
Yup primary issue is about OS issue.

BIOS.

That's why external come out first.
As in normal circumstance, it is always internal first.

32 bit OS also needs to throw out of window aka XP only recognise 990MB out of 3TB.
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/HDD-LBA-G...UEFI,10436.html

The hardware is hitting some limitation, and need to overhaul the current standard to move forward.

But I expect, it will be slow process, as same as 64 bit migration, (even 64 bit has been available for years), we are still stuck with 32 bit across even now.

As there is no urgency to use a 3TB HDD especially for OS disk, you don't require such a capacity for OS.

Correct me if I am wrong. As still new to the issue.

what is IDE,eSATA???same like those two??

edit:ive checked...my pc have sata hdd...
after i bought my new hdd, what 1stly should i do???
becoz i dont want any data to be lost...
      can u guide me??
*
IDE = Pata

eSata = external Sata.
There is mobo, casing that come with eSata port interface to connect the external hdd.

eSata port is slightly different with ordinary Sata port, which you cannot plug ordinary Sata cable into it one. It is basically a Sata port using interface/plug different.

ar? 2TB 1platter? cannot be right..

should 3 platter as apposed of F3 4 platter, which i think generate more heat..
or any other factors contribute?
*
There is not 2TB per platter.
Max capacity currently is 667GB per platter

The magic word is "ask".
Is it too difficult to ask the salesman for the model number?
*
Haha, I asked 2 times before on 2 shops.

Shop 1, Sales person A
I: what is the model for this samsung HDD in the price list
A: This is the lastest model doh.gif
I: I want to know the exact model code
A: 1TB
1: err... never mind.

Clearly wasting time in asking, just ask A to bring out and see the HDD directly myself.

Shop 2, Sales person B
I: What is this samsung model
B: Ecogreen
I: I know it is ecogreen, I want to know its exact model no.
B: Samsung Ecogreen 1TB.
I: .......

Anyone using the WD Caviar Blue 500GB (WD5000AAKS)? Or at least have experienced it before?

Want to get an affordable hard disk replacement, don't want to spend so much on the Caviar Black for now.
*
One of my office is using it as OS disk. Run cool, pretty ok.

Hi, Can't seem to find Western D HDD 32mb Cache Blue anywhere....I tried various shops..only 16mb Cache

Like to ask which is better performance 16mb WD Blue vs 32mb WD Green. Can also recommend a better alternative smile.gif. Budget user
*
Should be the 16mb blue.

Bigger cache effect is only more visible during start burst up time.

Blue version is difficult to get nowadays, most shops don't want to stock up.

hi...
what the difference between sata and sata II

if i used sata hardisk can i use sata II hardisk
*
Yes you can.

Sata I,II,III difference is the interface speed they can deliver.

But HDD limitation come from its speed ability itself aka write/read within itself, not the interface of Sata.

Just like a car that has top speed on 120km/h,
putting the car into a highway that can drive 120km/h vs 240km/h, make little difference.

For the statistic, you need to take in the sample size as consideration.

If sample size is too small, it can be influenced by outlier number.

sticking to laptop ? then use ssd lah...

SSD is the next level...

so far SSD is the best upgrade from any pc related stuffs  laugh.gif
*
When SSD first coming out, a lot of laptop manufacturers start to introduce SSD based laptop.
But now, it seems like most laptop manufacturers still going back to 2.5HDD as their main-stream selling model.

May be cost wise really can't compete.
