Samsung F3 2tb i would suggest. It's 5400 rpm but don't let it's spindle speed fool you. It can walk the walk with the other 2tb 7200rpm drives out there  nod.gif

Uses less watts, less noise and generates less heat as well, yet price if cheap per gig and performance almost the same as the 2tb 7200rpm drives. Whats not to like  thumbup.gif

I am using for storage purposes. If you want for your OS, i would suggest using a single SSD for OS, and use the samsung for storage.
@ahsiah

Thanks but i don't think i can wait. My QNAP 659 just arrived in Malaysia. It may be sent to me today, so seems i will have to settle for the Samsung 2tb F3 :/ oh well.

Wow,I thought those Samsung 1.5TB and 2TB out there is just F2 version.Mind to share the model no. and price for F3 1.5 and 2TB?

Is that it is value for money compared to WD 1.5 and 2TB since I just wanna use it on my 'toaster'.

SAMSUNG HD203WI

It's a 2tb 5400 rpm 32mb cache drive using 4 platter.

The Samsung F4 coming out in September 2010 is 3 platter, uses less watts, and uses safer ROHS compliant materials.

I installed 4 of the Samsung F3 HD203WI into my QNAP 659 as EXT4 raid5. No problems even after doing smart disk complete test :}

You can forget 1.5tb, and just get the Samsung hd i got. Best bang for buck and good performer for storage.

Wow,best bang for buck?I thought is 1.5TB maybe is most value in terms of price/GB. hmm.gif ,maybe just buy 1TB and consume all the space and wait for F4,is it a better idea?

Seems like normal. I have same setup with you. Using 4pcs samsung 2TB F3, raid 5 in synology NAS. All day long too. I m kind of worry about the temperature. Mind running at around 38-43c. So now look like it is normal temperature.

43c is still fine... especially since you're placing it in a NAS box I assume?
Normal temps for the F3 1TB (here atleast) is around the 37-40c mark.

I heard the Hitachi 2tb 7200 rpm drive which is 5 platter if i am not mistaken, runs at a higher temperature and is noiser. Consumes more power to boot doh.gif

That was why i went with the Samsung F3 2tb instead because of a very similar performance in read/write but still beats out in those other areas.

I choose samsung F3 because it running lower rpm, less power and low temperature compare those 7200rpm. My thinking is, running in NAS, I don't need fast speed HDD. The important is longer lifespan and less problem. Since heat is enemy, choosing lower rpm running is better. And I run it 7/11.

HD203WI is actually an F2 because of the 5400rpm. but Samsung simply named it as F3.

Need to enlarge my storage now as my current desktop 500GB Seagate 7200.11, WD 1TB MyBook and WD 500GB Passport all filled up.

I'm considering the Samsung F3 1TB, but also tempted for the upcoming Samsung F4 2TB. The upcoming F4 2TB will be 5,400rpm instead of 7,200 and the drive will be utilizing 3 platters. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Shall I wait for the 2TB to be release some time this month or grab the F3 1TB first? Hmm... maybe I can later swap the 1TB as primary and dispose the Seagate? laugh.gif tongue.gif

FYI, the 2TB will not be as fast as the 1TB as the spin-rate and also the access time is much different.
You can consider the 1TB if you prefer performance over storage, otherwise the 2TB might be worth a wait.

Currently using Samsung HD103SJ 1TB. The Windows experience score is 5.9. So i guess only a SSD will push the score to 7 above?

Is the salesman stupid? Or does he try to cheat? HD153UI is F2EG.
Well actually it's almost the same, but performance and price wise, F3EG is higher.
