Hey TS, you may want to add in the owners list...just a suggestion. Maybe separate those with stock coolers and those with 3rd party coolers, and their temperatures and their OC speeds, etc.

XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog (640mhz core clock version) here.
Here's my experience so far. 4x AA 8x AF FEAR - crashes in 5 mins Crysis - crashes in 10 mins No AA no AF FEAR - crashes in 15mins Crysis - crashes in 15mins No AA no AF (Downclocked to Nvidia's revision clocks) No crash so far in 30 mins, will play longer soon. Both tests are done with 70% fan speed with Rivatuner. Max temp is about 65-67C Could be driver issues, no diff with the latest WHQL certified and beta drivers. These babies run hot. Since it's a "1 piece" heatsink fan design, the overall heat could be bad for the voltage regulators heat transfer/dissapation. I'm very much anticipated for 8800GT coolers, but they carry quite a hefty, price. Thermalright's HR-03 GT is about reasonable, say USD55. ![]() Scary heatsinks for the VR chips tho. Had bad experience with AC's VR heatspreader, not effective. Zalman requires 2 items (VF1000 & RHS88), total of USD85, ouch. But their component that cools down the RAM + VR chips is very impressive. A one piece solution, talk about proper distributed heat spreading. |

stock clocks, factory overclocked. sotong, weird isn't it? too bad i can't monitor them VR chips. skymyxe, that's right, extreme version. not just the core clock was downclocked, but the shader and mem clock as well. Will do proper tests soon, AA AF on and off, stock and downclocked settings, FEAR, Crysis, 3dmark06 with temp recordings. |

QUOTE(FuGZ @ Dec 15 2007, 09:13 PM) yes, max temp @ 67c with stock cooler is pretty impressive for me, but the crash occurrences seem abnormal. few with zotac pre-oc amp version also got hang issue, with the memory downclocked, the issue resolved... try to downclock on memory only to 900 and retain the default gpu & shader clock. |

I believe that's the most important thing. Service is as good as the item itself. I'd rather spend few more extra bucks on trusted shops which provide me excellent service. Yeah, agree. The best solution is to get a 3rd party cooler for the card. That way, it'll cool much better.

Why can't the manufacturer of graphics card partner with manufacturer of coolers? Would love to see how they come up with enthusiast board. Throw away free games, I want a good heatsink.

I know those...but what about high end heatsinks? Come on...XFX paired with Thermalright. Now that'll be cool.
Added on December 16, 2007, 4:22 pmSparkle's 8800GT Passive came bundle with a heatsink almost similar to Thermalright's HR-03...albeit with only 3 heatpipes, lower amount of fins, and small size. And it's orientation is the ATX style...of which, is not optimized for the card's cooling. Check it out here. This post has been edited by clayclws: Dec 16 2007, 04:22 PM |

Aiks...no wonder la. So your ambient temperature can't be actually measured. But I guess the fan plays a factor in cooling everything in your chassis.

one thing tht keep me worry is the default fan speed for MSI 8800GT is 29% only
even full load also 29% only, i play crysis with high setting can go up to 90-93c, it freak me out. now i set the fan speed to 45%, everything works fine for me. play crysis high setting only 70-73c. lots of differences. |

QUOTE(eusioxn @ Dec 16 2007, 07:32 PM) one thing tht keep me worry is the default fan speed for MSI 8800GT is 29% only someone teach me how to use riva tuner to control my gc fan..maybe u should use it too.. even full load also 29% only, i play crysis with high setting can go up to 90-93c, it freak me out. now i set the fan speed to 45%, everything works fine for me. play crysis high setting only 70-73c. lots of differences. **tribute to rsangle.. |

u can even set a few temperature thresholds yourself and set the fan speed when the temps pass the respective thresholds. all with rivatuner.

btw, some say that by removing the stock cooler's COVER ( not the whole heatsink, only the cover that has the manufacturer sticker on it) the temps would b reduced. Is that true?

The answer is easy, manufacturing cost of game is way lower than a cooler ..
So bundle with game is much more cheaper than cooler .. So why should invest on the cooler since most user might not even appreciate the cooler ... many still not aware of the true capability of the performance cooler .. |

Hmm thankz for the quick response. Still I have heard of some trouble with the XFX XXX edition which crashes on games(from what ive read on forums). How far true is this problem and whether i should go for asus 8800GT top instead. as to which would be more stable or efficient on my rig.

How far true is this problem and whether i should go for asus 8800GT top instead. as to which would be more stable or efficient on my rig. It's not the card that causes such problem. It's the nVidia's driver itself. Actually, you should wait until nVidia come out with the next release with a stable driver version coz the on that they have now, certainly had causes much troubles among the end users all over. So no point in switching to buy other brands too coz the driver would just be the same. As for either buying the OC version or not, it's up to you. You can choose to be safe and have the factory OCed cards rather than have to go through the OCing process all by yourself. But, to look at the bright side, we're all here to help if you need anything bout OCing your card. So, no worries, but then again it's always up to what suits you best. Just my humble opinion here. |

i forget to add, at least 3.0ghz processor speed haha, btw... for benchmarking maybe the proc is important in 3d06 to influence the score (must 3.0ghz), but real gammig.... not really much diff even oc > 3.0ghz...

Mediocre CPU bottlenecks GPU. GPU is meant to calculate Graphics: shadows, AA, filtering, textures, etc. Things like AI, map loading, path finding, etc. are calculated by the CPU.

If I do a lot of gaming at 1680x1050 res, 256MB is not enough? I heard performance at that resolution can be up to 50% improve if using 512MB version. Any thoughts? |

QUOTE(skymyxe @ Dec 17 2007, 11:48 PM) Yup. Having a GT would be a luxury already. Most of the people around the globe still stuck with low and mid range. Should be glad if can get a GT and play with high settings with all the eye candy. but its consider value for money. I think its under top mid range class because its price hehe. Above 1K only consider high-end. |

Are there any other cooling solution for 8800gt?

The way I see it 8800gt is certainly more value than the 8800gtx.

I don't really overclock my ASUS TOP because my computer is bottlenecked by my RAM and processor.
Guess that my Pentium 4 has to retire soon. Hahaha |

A user's review on the new ASUS 8800GT with Glaciator cooler.

It is the temperature that warrants the purchase...no temp readings, make it hard for people to judge the feasibility of the Glaciator heatsink/cooler.

That Asus TOP Geforce 8800gt is a good change from the usual reference cooler which is quite bad retrospectively.
However, I observed that the Asus Cooler has not covered most of the Video Card Memory. That might not be a good thing for overclocking the memory though. Is there any more 3rd party cooler other than Thermalright HR-03GT, Zalman 900CU LED, Artic Accelero S1 and Artic Silencer 5? Thanks in advance. |

Fatality model is a variant of 900CU LEd, I am currently using the Fatality model.
Funny that, the noisest of the 3rd party coolers are no where close to noise produced by the stock cooler fan speed @ 60%. Even the Fatality version at full speed is no where as noisy as the stock cooler fan speed @ 60%-100%. Cooling the memory isn't a big issue if the casing have very good airflows. Frankly it's quite easy to cool the Ram by just adding 3rd party small Ram heatsinks. Haven't heard a graphic card where the RAM chips overhead before the core yet though. |

All in all, yeah we heard quite a lot of bad reputation stories bout MSI cards, but then again there are also poeple who had no problem with it at all. Can OC to max some more. Either galaxy or MSI is no that important I think. Just get the one with the best value for money with warranty that'll help you to cover your card in case of any problems in the future. |

MSI 88GT red pcb/second batch with solid caps built-in for stable OC... I've seen someone OC MSI 88GT to 770/2000/1900 without moding it and run stable on it... |

its probably because they didn't tune correctly...this GC stock fan speed is 25%....so imagine how hot will it be under load but for those who setup correctly, the average temp range shud be round 54C~73C

If you're using bigger screen that means high resolution with high settings than why not OC it, since then you can increase the performance of the card while gaming. If you're a regular user then can maintain at factory speed and be contented. The default already suits all your gaming needs. |

Guys,
Need some oppinion here. Is it worthy to get the 256MB version of the 8800GT for its current price point? And, is it recommended to run games at 19" native resolution and above? Between this and the 256MB HD3850, which is better? This post has been edited by akachester: Dec 19 2007, 07:24 AM |

QUOTE(mikelee @ Dec 18 2007, 10:35 AM) A user's review on the new ASUS 8800GT with Glaciator cooler. arjuna_mfna, mikelee posted a page back. It's not the top edition, but there's a new heatsink and fan: Glaciator.http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=1813561 Looks nice but the downside is no temp readings. Hmm Glaciator....More like a ZV9 inspired cooler....and a hint of how bad the 8800GT stock cooler is.With the temp right now without pump up the fan speed. It would die in just 1 year I guess.

Try to use different fan profile using RivaTuner if possible. Then you can setup fan 60% at idle and when playing games 100%. Set the core temperature threshold to control your fan speed. Haha, I know the Idle temp of 70 C is ganas. Stock without extra fan mar. But now I just set up Rivatuner already.
I downclock my GC from 700 to 600 mhz and Fans settings are: Less than 65C - 60% fan speed. More than 65C - 80% fan spd Above 70C - 100% fan spd. So the Idle now 62-63C lor. What about you guys? For load temp, haven't get to test that yet. But by default (which is auto fan speed), why nVidia set their fan speed at 29.8% when idle? that idle temp was like 70C !!! |

Actually I'm worry of the temperature is because my comp crashes easily when i play CoD4 or Crysis. It crashes after playing for awhile. And it is damn annoying to crash (black screen) when you are half way through in the game. The temp was like 90C when i played CoD the other day. hope so that Rivatuner is my solution for now until i get extra fans and coolers.
But, come on man, after buying 8800GT GC, all I get is crashes when playing high end game. |

Btw managed to firmware overclock my Zotac 8800 GTS 512 mb to 740/2070/1800 as per the Asus TOP XXX specifications using NvFlash and NiBitor. Was a real pain to do it via Vista and some more using USB keyboard
Anyone can recommend a good 8 cm fan with decent air flow and yet quiet? I currently have my casing's inbuilt two 120 mm ones (one front and one back) and piss ass weak 80 mm fan on the side panel. So no crazy 100 cfm 55 db cyclones please. Sorry for the double post. didn't see this 'official' thread. |

hmmm......i just got my gigabyte 8800gt last wed (the one with zalman fan and OC ver)
the idle temp is 50-51c and highest temp i got is 72c when playing HL2. but when i try to use rivatuner, it seems that my fan is running at 100% all the time and i can't adjust it. Also, there's no ambient temp showing in the HWmonitor in rivatuner. It is suppose to be like this ? |

QUOTE(madballs @ Dec 21 2007, 11:26 AM) hmmm......i just got my gigabyte 8800gt last wed (the one with zalman fan and OC ver) You can have a read on this rivatuner guide, posted by sotong168:the idle temp is 50-51c and highest temp i got is 72c when playing HL2. but when i try to use rivatuner, it seems that my fan is running at 100% all the time and i can't adjust it. Also, there's no ambient temp showing in the HWmonitor in rivatuner. It is suppose to be like this ? http://www.vaguesoft.com/users/dwood/blog/...rials/rivatuner Hopefully it helps. If all fails, get Everest. Straight away can check ambient temp. Anyway where you got the GC? |

My new Twin Dragons for 2nd rig. Just arrived from Hong Kong today.
![]() ![]() ![]() These are the 700mhz OC AMP version. It comes with full aluminum cooler, even the fan cover is aluminum for maximum heat dissipation. Not like the stock which comes with plastic fan cover. The fans are also different n even comes with LED. Best thing is this- Right now, only Zotac is using Samsung 1ns chips which have been tested to be much better than the Qimondas on other brands. ![]() Havent even installed it n I'm slapping on my favorite thermal paste- Arctic Cooling MX2. It's the fibers from the cotton wool I used to clean off the paste so we can see the markings on the chip. It's funny how it doesnt appear to the naked eye but when u macro shot with a camera every little detail comes out. |

Dual slot is all nice, but the manufacturers really should learn something from the market saturated with 3rd party coolers. Why can't they design heatsinks like the HR03 in the first place? Creating another market for 3rd party coolers? Well, nice way to burn the enthusiasts' wallet.

Some don't even know they can change the coolers. I've got so many friend wanna buy the GT with low spec system and all I can say is good luck in burnin a hole to your pocket. Good thing that I buy from bulk....save me $ to get 3rd party go to up to AMP! edition.
I only learn to change 3rd party cooler during my 6600GT era which it heats hell lot. After changing to zalman cooler the temp was kept at very nice luke warm.So I have gud experience with zalman cooler. 1 slot cooler looks cool...but not "cool". |

You can run over 2Ghz on the memory, but not for daily usage.

Just fit 2 of those Geforce 8800GT into my computer 24/7. That'll will warm the room up plenty enough....hehe |

Yeah Skyme,
I posted there then I figured could have been a good topic here too. Maybe the overclocking potential of Geforce 8800gt is higher in overseas with cold weather than Malaysia. Too bad they have a supply issue or maybe not. |

I highly doubt the lifespan of the fan is shorter than the lifespan of the GPU.Anyway you could get a 3rd party cooler in a few years time, most fans I know last like 20,000 hours and upwards. Heck my dad's old computer's Zalman 7500Cu is still going strong after like 3-4 years on 24/7 a week. By the time your fan goes kaput, it's probably like 2 generations of gpu away. Good time to change to another gpu. I wonder how does the new nvidia card or amd card is gonna look like. Probably need water cooling soon enough. |

U guys worried about 8800GT temps shud check out the super duper uber cool temps of the Zotac AMP. I just tested mine n they're only running at 62C full load. Not only that, I'm running them in SLI in a super small n tight SFF case called the Silverstone SG03. I loaded up the dual core CPU to 100% n then ran the Zotac AMPs at 100% n still the temps were nice n cool. The all aluminum cooler from Zotac must be working really well. I'll post the screenshot later coz it's in the SG03 rig n I'm using my King Kong rig to post this now.

You should worry bout the temperature instead. If you keep your fan running low and let the heat rose up then it'll damage your card and that is most definitely not a good thing. Better have the fan running at high speed and low the temperature of the card. Use fan profiles to control the fan speeds. Therefore you won't have it running at high speed all the time. Only during playing games. |

Not all the games will push your graphic card to the max right?
For me, playing CoH at high settings does not increase the temperature beyond 70. Only Crysis does. |

Well, can anyone here give me some advice. My 8800Gt temps are reaching the 70 degrees mark. i've heard that graphic cards with lower temperatures last relatively longer. I'm about to bump the fan speed to 100%, but before i do so, does increasing the fan speed to 100% shorten the life of the fan? LOL, i'm quite confrsed now, please advise.
thanks |

QUOTE(Terence573 @ Dec 26 2007, 06:13 PM) Yeah, should be all right. Again, always monitor your temperature. Try not to go beyond 80C although some recommend 100C. Below 80C should be great for your GC. And have the fan at full speed while playing games, other than that, just set it to normal. You won't be needing it to run 100% all the time. |

hey guys, i was wondering... how much does a CPU affects framerates? I've got Asus 8800GT recently, but I really think my game is not running as fast as i expect. my CPU is AMD X2 4200+, ram is Trancend 2Gig.
Was wondering if i changed the CPU to 6000 will it has like.. say....maybe 10% or more difference? running crysis benchmark only gets about average of 37fps on 800x600 high settings... |

QUOTE(brewoe_1988 @ Dec 26 2007, 07:24 PM) That's cool. Coz it may be disturbing for some people. Anyhow, if can withstand the noise, then can go for full speed. That'll help reduce the temperature without extra 3rd party cooler although the decrease is not as much as the 3rd party coolers. |

QUOTE(Qool @ Dec 26 2007, 06:34 PM) hey guys, i was wondering... how much does a CPU affects framerates? I've got Asus 8800GT recently, but I really think my game is not running as fast as i expect. my CPU is AMD X2 4200+, ram is Trancend 2Gig. how big is ur monitor, and wuts ur x2 4200 speed? Was wondering if i changed the CPU to 6000 will it has like.. say....maybe 10% or more difference? running crysis benchmark only gets about average of 37fps on 800x600 high settings... |

However, not sure if i should use the smartdoctor utility to Overclock it or not, i just set it to use smart hyperdrive thing. forgot the name... and set to CPU. but didn't notice any real difference also. QUOTE(skymyxe @ Dec 28 2007, 02:51 PM) lol, never done any overclocking b4... is it safe? hahaha...was thinking of getting a newer CPU after a few months.... quadcore perhaps. anyway, what's the framerate u guys are getting for crysis? the reason i'm asking is i think it's the most demanding games out there at the moment... btw, mine's running dx9... not even dx10... also a puny 37fps... |

QUOTE(Qool @ Dec 28 2007, 02:47 PM) erm, CPU: AMD X2 4200+ (think is 2.4Ghz) i think u can oc more of ur cpu..RAM: 2GB Trancend motherboard: ASUS M2NE i also think that my CPU is the source of the bottleneck... just would like to check with you guys. anyone ran crysis benchmark? the GPU and CPU performance also gave me around 37fps average on high settings @ 800x600 (not very high, the option's disabled for me). think that's a little bit low for this baby ASUS 8800GT 512MB (not TOP). However, not sure if i should use the smartdoctor utility to Overclock it or not, i just set it to use smart hyperdrive thing. forgot the name... and set to CPU. but didn't notice any real difference also. Any idea guys? mind telling me why ur using 800x600 on a 19" lcd? its kinda... |

LOL, the reason i'm using 800x600 is i wanna try to max out the fps i can squeeze outta the card. i dun mind a bit more choppiness around the edge if i can get more fps.... not that i wanna see it in 800x600. my normal threshold is 1024x768

well, was thinking of probably getting a newer CPU but seeing this link whereby the compare the different CPUs and 8800GT.. it didn't have that much significant difference at all..
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/$...grade/page5.asp should be around 10fps difference... i was hoping for probably 15 - 20fps jump... but then again i can run CoD4 with max settings no prob at 1024x786. probably i SHOULD OC my CPU.... |

@Qool , try raising the resolution from 800x600 to 1280x1024 . See how big is the difference . If it's small , then a very big chance your CPU is bottlenecking .
I finished Crysis @ 1440x900/noAA/4xAF/ all high setting , benching it I got around 35FPS FYI . |

Amal,
You finally got a Geforce 8800 GT, good on you. How's it going for you? I mean the card. Yeah I play using 1280x1024 for COD4 with 4xAA and 16xAF turned on. No lag, finished the whole game. Also that resolution for bioshock with all those turn up. Cheers, Ken |

QUOTE(Qool @ Dec 28 2007, 06:59 PM) yeah.....i did....both the CPU driver and optimizer... just now i tried running Gears of War with my max resolution.. also feels the same... i guess it really is CPU... As stated earlier, if using 1024x768 reso only brings up few FPS then your CPU is bottlenecking your performance. |

Nope its not that easy as change HTT/FSB and voltage , reset pc . Mild OC yes , but for extensive OC , no . Mid you that mild oc doesn't give significant performance increase .
For A64 X2 , you need to hit at least 3Ghz to start noticing difference . BTW , that's not a walk in the park because you'll need better cooling , adjusting DDR ratio , and etc . Bottom end , as long as you feel smooth at max setting , I won't bother the numbers if it's me . |

Just want to ask is anyone interested with these custom made ram sink for 8800GT and 8800GTS (G92).
Its works much better than those normal ram sink because :- 1. You can use thermal paste that you want. FYI, thermal paste transfer heat better than thermal tape 2. Bigger surface area than those normal ramsink. Thus, better cooling 3. Its used screw to mount it, so more pressure on the ram / pwm. Thus, better contact. This stuff is from US. I already ordered my unit. If anyone want, can tag along and share shipping provided you guys trust me Some pics; ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
