Astro B.yond Personal Video Recorder (PVR)
Astro introduces the latest innovative recording function which enables you to RECORD, REWIND, PAUSE and PLAY your favourite programmes, including those on HD. You don’t have to miss a single programme and television moment again. Now, you can record all your favourite programmes and watch them at your own convenience. It’s TV your time. Anytime, any day. The PVR will also be able to support exciting new features such as video-on-demand offerings in the future.

The recording service is available via Astro B.yond Personal Video Recorder (PVR) box and Astro B.yond External Hard Disk Drive PVR.

Features:

Watch One Channel and Record Another Channel
With the dual-tuner feature in the Astro B.yond PVR, you can:
a) record up to two channels at one time, or
b) watch one live channel while recording another at the same time, or
c) watch one recorded program while recording another two at the same time

*Recording function with external hard disk drive as a Plug ‘N’ Play PVR can only record and watch one channel simultaneously or record one programme at any one time.

Recording Functions:
a) Record instantly – record the current programme you are watching by just clicking the Record button on your remote control
b) Record by programme – convenient recording via the new on-screen TV Guide and Info banner

Planner:
a) All your scheduled recordings will be displayed prominently on the Planner for easy reference, and
b) Astro B.yond PVR will also automatically check on the space availability in the built-in hard disk, and
c) Live Tuner Conflict (When recording more than two programmes simultaneously, a conflict message will appear to warn you of the conflict).

Rewind Live TV:
This feature gives you the ultimate control to rewind Live TV and enjoy unprecedented instant replays of missed action in normal speed, fast forward speed, or in slow-motion.
a) The Rewind buffer is set at 30 minutes as default and the maximum limit is up to 90 minutes. If you want to adjust the rewind buffer period, you can change its setting.
b) When you switch channel, the buffer will resets itself every time you switch the channel. You will lose the review buffer and the review buffer will auto reset to the current channel that you are watching.

Pause Live TV
This feature allows you to pause Live TV while attending to other matters, and play it again when you are ready to resume watching the show where you left it.

Fast Forward
The fast forward speed of 4x, 8x, 16x, 30x gives you the freedom of time control.
It is even capable of fast forwarding by 15 minutes interval.

Slow motion mode
This feature allows you to play scenes in slow motion at 1/10x, 1/4x and 1/2x mode.

Well first we started with getting Beyond installed and now its just 3 months most of us are bored with lack of choices cos the Repeat fever has struck HD channels ! We are so bored we just cannot wait for more new HD fare !

Erm, Discovery HD has been known to be false alarm, unless Astro wants to surprise us or something. But maybe it might show up later this year. Astro PR promised at least 10 channels by end of 2010, who knows.

Now we're two Discovery HD channels behind the world. Not one, two.

It already 2 months without new HD channels...

i think Discovery HD will make it to our shores, very soon. Can't reveal my sources.

something I just realised. When watching HD with Dolby Digital sound, the volume cannot be controlled by astro. Only can be adjusted on my AVR. anyone else noticed this?

Known issue, volume canot be controlled when audio is output through HDMI. Use AVR volume control.

Iirc volume control only works for optical and RCA.

the volume control for the decoder itself like not working right... not as effective as the old volume control....

if i'm not mistaken i heard/read our local channels will be in HD in 2013.... walla 3 years to go... but still, for malay drama??? do u think the small production co will upgrade their equipment? hurmmm....

in 3 years, HD equipment will be standard..so, the price will drop for sure

they have to make it HD coz after 2015, there are most of the film in HD...so, they have to follow the standard if they want their film in the market..

There are lots of ways for them to cheat and they probably will because Astro / Media Prima have done nothing but shrink the budgets available to produciton houses every year.

But if they want to produce HD they need to do the following:


For Video - >

Malay dramas are slowly switching to HD shooting already. But of course these new cameras have higher rental fees. $$$

They are editing with an intermediate file that's between SD and HD resolution.

And then outputting to SD for delivery.

To upgrade, the production houses will need more expensive editing computers and spend a lot more time rendering than they do now. This costs more money$$$ than usual.

They will also need to output to HDCam tape, this transfer process costs more money than the current process.$$$


For Audio - >

Some malay dramas don't even take their audio to an audio-post production house to finish their audio.

To get 5.1 surround, they will either fake it. Or they will take their audio to an audio-post production house, which has to take more time in mixing / editing. This costs more money$$$ than usual.

Then the audio needs to be encoded to Dolby E. Not even the multi-million dollar facility at FINAS can do this. Currently the only way to encode audio to Dolby E is to take it down to MediaCorp in Singapore. This of course costs more money$$$



So if Media Prima / Astro go Full HD, not only will they have to upgrade their own facilities, they will have to increase the budgets that they give production houses.

No offences, HD has been there in the market ever since 2005 end , begining 2006. I watched Skysports in HD back in London somewhere in 2006.

That took ASTRO nearly 4 utter years to bring in HD.

For what it's worth, Astro actually made the right choice to wait it out. In 2006, DVB-S2 was still in draft and HD was done using MPEG-2 over DVB-S which is bandwidth intensive. If Astro had went HD then, they'd have to upgrade again when DVB-S2 and H.264 went final last year. Plus, they also waited for MEASAT-3A to launch first instead of shoehorning the already crowded MEASAT-3. They won't be able to offer more than two HD channels if they use DVB-S and MPEG-2 over MEASAT-3.

Although I'm pretty confused on why Astro only use one satellite for SD and another for HD? Why not let both Measat 2 and 3 carry SD, and let 3A carry more SD channels as well as HD? That's what DishTV and DirecTV do in the US to be able to offer hundreds of channels. For example, use Measat 2 for AOD content, 3 for specific packages and 3A for HD and more specific packages? Then you'll have room for hundreds of channels.

Although, in the US, they have a pretty funny looking antenna called a "SuperDish" when they need to receive from 4 different satellites...

Probably 2 satellites for 2 different broadcasting. SD & HD.
I guess the plan is to persuade Malaysians to upgrade to Astro Beyond fully, then they might have one Satellites

what do you mean? you got no sound?

are you connected properly or not?

Astro has to choose between:

1. Launch a new satellite.
2. Change all SD channels encoding to H.264 and possibly change all decoders.

astro dish is more capable, it can receive 2 satelites signal with sigle lnb

about sound issue, I think digital sound can not be adjusted, but analogue sound can, by using byond remote control

When upgrading to astro beyond, can i refuse to give the old smart card ? because every time i go back to my grandmother's house i will take the card to watch my subscribed channel at there and will the card work after i upgrade to astro beyond? thx

ASTRO will not possibly allow 2 working smart cards for one account. You have to give up either one bro.

We're so far already exactly that: M3 for SD and M3A for HD... why not stretch the game abit and use more than 2 for SD? We have 3 sats (4 if Measat hadn't sell/rent Measat-1 to Africa). So far only using 2.

Astro should move AOD back to Measat-2 so Measat-3 has more space. With the AOD channels freed up (that's 1-2 dozen channels), M3 can carry whole MTV, Star, HBO and Nat Geo ranges and still have wiggle room to spare.

Better yet, move AOD to IPTV. I notice that even latest SD decoder has Ethernet. Then have room for everything and you can claim that your AOD is true Video on Demand.

Not either one, old smart card must be returned. It will be useless to keep it though, it won't work after your byond smart card activated.
Byond smart card will only work with your byond decoder only. So, when you go to your grandma house, bring byond decoder as well (don't forget power adapter as well). It'll work with old dish.

because both astro satellites are located at the same orbital position, just bring your byond box along, connect to any astro dish you could find and watch your subscribed packages this way

Is it possible to use the White and Red audio cables (not through the digital audio port) to connect the box to the AVR? My AVR doesn't have an HDMI port.

Yes, but only if you have the audio settings in the B.yond box set to output Stereo to the HDMI.

If you set the B.yond box to outpu Dolby Digital on the HDMI output, it turns off the analog (red/white) outputs.

This is maybe the two sattelite that astro use is close to each other.


Anyway, i think Discovery HD is comig. Eventhough maybe not in april, but maybe soon. Remember astro has sign the agreement with Discovery.

measat 3 and 3a are purposely put into the same orbit, this is by design, otherwise we would have ugly 2 headed dish

B.yond current decoder receive satellite signal from measat 3a. Is it possible for b.yond to receive other international satellite?

It's receiving signal from M3a and M3. A dish can receive signal from any satellite its the decoder that prevents you watching it.

well.. if he want to commit to beyond, he has to give up the old card... if not, then keep the old card and dont subscribe to byond at all... either one..

The agreement is to pay Astro $$$ for using Measat-3A to relay Discovery HD and Discovery World HD to rest of Asia. Whether Astro has to carry the channel was never mentioned. And that stinks. I hope that Astro getting to carry the channels is part of the deal tho. Astro has the entire Discovery SD range so far. It would be a shame if the same is not true for the Discovery HD range. And it's bad enough that Singapore already has Discovery HD before Malaysia.

On small rain it does to. I notice sometime maybe SD channel is quite fast to lose signal than HD channel on rainy day.

I think this is special feature for byond box only that can automatically detect new channel, but has bad side effect as you described during channel detection, astro really need to fix this bug

and currently my package doesn't come with HBO.

No. The RM20 is for the HD "service" only, no channels.

Channels come with your subscription package.

Since a lot of people have now seen the advertisment but mainly on Animal Planet
n the fact that Astro sign agreement with Discovery
But only to show Discovery World HD in India
Logic would say Astro should show first in Malaysia before letting people get it first

I've seen the ad for Discovery HD also. Just now on Discovery Travel and Living. This is too often to be a blunder by Astro censors right? The ad shows splashing water, looks like the balls and paints ad on NatGeo HD, to highlight the HD capabilities.

Astro also does not confirm nor deny about this on their FB page, any insiders from Astro can confirm?

I wonder why they need to be so secretive about launching channels !I dont think the share market is gonn be affected ! If you launch 50 channels I can understand but this is one one mah ?

You claim all BBC channels shows are old shows (which is a lie, the Dr. Who on BBCE is always the latest season, and Humf was only launched a few months ago and immediately picked up by CBeebies, making it bleeding edge) and that they're tired of it, and yet they bring in another old TVB shows channel. Despite the fact that you already have almost two dozen AOD/ABO channels that sometimes shows that, and a TVB channel that always shows that. And TV2, TV3, NTV7 and 8TV also shows old TVB shows as well. In other words, we have enough old TVB shows channels.

Agreed. Considering that MSI also pulled theirs early (RTFM chip...)

ASsto is profit based their profits matter most. Its clear they control channels and channels with dignity like BBCE , MGM say .... off and take off only these HK based channels carry Asto bcos they got so many strings attached to Assto

Lets not confuse my personal opinion of the channel with Astro's decision to remove it. As you fully know I have no knowledge of the reason why it was removed.

I'm still not satisfied with the fact that it's an error and we're neither getting Discovery HD or Discovery World HD in April tho.

If 305 to be the new TVB Classic channel, then, maybe I don't mind they add in this new channel if it is FREE.
For me, I don't subscribe to What Lan Toi (311) , so, I don't watch any TVB series at all including those from TV2, TV3, NTV7 etc. (no time to watch during the screening time).
But if they include this new TVB Classic to channel 305, which I think it is FREE since 301 to 304 is already FREE bundle inside my package, then at least I can watch some old TVB series that I miss long time ago.
For me, I will be happy for it.

I saw some posts on the previous thread mentioning that some of you received a call from Astro asking whether wants to addin just some HD channel by adding to pay just RM5, is that true?

If it is true, how come no Astro CS calling me to promote this? Currently, I only can watch SuperSports HD and ESPN HD because I don't subscribe Movie and Documentary package.

Hope for Discovery HD is near.

I guess its good for them to be in secretive mode...

they dun want to be ashamed if somethings goes wrong when they say they want to launch a new channel.... (just maybe)
