i couldnt get any information on how many hours we can save in 320GB HDD? and can we connect the HDD to our computer or other media device to watch it? since we cant watch the program in the future if we unsubscribe the related package..
*
Yeah.. you can connect it to your computer ..

(sorry just being sarcastic) Astro would never prohibit such a thing as it would leed to piracy i assume

In their faq,

52. Can I transfer the recorded programme on my Astro B.yond PVR or Ext. HDD to an extarnal dervice?
No. All television programmes are subject to copyright licensing restrictions.

All the recorded data are encrypted via the Astro sim card which based on NDS. Unless you're able to crack the encryption code. tongue.gif

My money is on someone cracking it within the first 3 months tongue.gif

But its kinda a pointless bet since anyone could actually rerecord it using an external PVR

Refer to previous page. For 320GB you can record 100Hrs for SD format and 55hrs for HD format.
*

Actually 220GB only for recording, 100GB reserved for VOD smile.gif

Not 2 receiver, 2 tuner.
Existing byond box, only 320GB not 500GB.
But I wonder if we plug in WD My Passport 500GB or 640GB, is it not working? & If let say we change to another HDD is it just plug n play or activation based on HDD serial no? hmm.gif

Yeah, I mean tuner receiver...

You are right, plug in a 4TB Seagate external 3.5" HDD might just work
------------------------------------------------------------------

It won't work. There is a firmware related in astro byond decoder that can only recognise certain model of WD's HDD.

You can try, but I bet they control it via its firmware... but honestly Astro need to do something about those SD channel... the compression is way too high... maybe with DVB-S2 standard which currently HD channels on... we'll have better luck... but than... 5 - 10 years later? sad.gif

Anyway RTM has been testing with DVB-T for years.... I still can receive those channel via my HTPC... but who watch RTM anyway..... oh by the way 2 years ago RTM broadcast 2008 Beijing Olympic in HD, wonder if they will be broadcasting World Cup in HD as well....

I think we all should boycot using the Western Digital drive option for thye time being. It makes no sense that you have to pay 299 for a "specific" hard drive compared to paying 400 to get a PVR. (other than the additional 5 for reccording)

I won't be surprised that in future you can use any HD. That way those of us with a spare HD (exceeding 100Gb) will not have to buy another HD.

I won't mind paying the Rm5 for recording function with exisiting Byond but to have to pay 299 to get a HD does not make sense when the PVR is same price ! (1 difference ?) hmm.gif

First, are you sure this is controlled in firmware. If yes, what's the reason for limiting only certain model of WDD HDD? Unless WDD got some fees or something, I don't see any logic behind it. All media players out there can support upto 2TB easily these days...

Looks like the Chinese HD channel Zhi Zun is Astro in-house HD channel and they just pick this program and that program from TVB and others to show it there. Hopefully it is FREE like the Astro AEC channel.

Yes, I know still need to pay RM20 for HD channel service.

What I mean is that I hope this new Chinese HD Zhi Zun channel is part of General package like the AEC channel which is free and not in Dynastry channel like Wat Lan Toi because if you do not subscribe to Dynasty package, then you also don't get the Zhi Zun HD if it is part of Dynasty package.

Added on June 1, 2010, 3:22 pmAstro mentioned that we have to purchase the external WD HDD ourselves if we use normal Byond box for PVR which they mentioned the cost is about RM299.

So, if everyone here DO NOT WANT to get the new Byond PVR box and opt for the external WD box, then all of us here get together and buy in BULK so that we can get CHEAPER PRICE.

Agree????
