I have been involved in contact lens related business & visual health since year 2005. I myself started wearing contact lens since early 2000.

this thread is purely for all members to share or ask information about contact lens & related product, as requested by many of my regular and new customers here in lowyat.net.

please do not flood my pm inbox with questions as i prefer to answer them here in order to prevent repeating myself answering same question from different members. thank you very much for all your consideration and support all this while.

Here are my recommendations for contact lens user:

Daily lens recommended :
1st : acuvue oasys daily (RM 150 after discount), buy more for extra discount
2nd : alcon total 1 day (RM 140)
3rd : biotrue daily lens (RM 100)

Monthly lens recommendation:
1st : air optix hydraglyde (RM 55)
2nd : miacare clear (RM 50)
3rd : biofinity (RM 60)

Toric monthly lens recommendation:
1st : air optix toric (RM 95 if 4 boxes & above)
2nd: oasys toric (2 weekly lens) (RM 150 each)
3rd : biofinity toric (hard to remove) (RM 170 each if 4 boxes & above)

I personally still very much prefer acuvue oasys (RM 110) lens whether for normal or toric type.

Toric daily lens recommendation:
1st : acuvue moist toric daily lens
2nd : clariti daily toric lens

Color lens recommendation:
Monthly : infiniti color (RM 60) or silkon color
Daily : acuvue define (RM 130)

Multifocal monthly lens recommendation:
Monthly : air optix multifocal
Daily : acuvue moist multifocal or total 1 day multifocal

i got a few questions about contacts:

i don't know whether it is a myth or fact, but can u explain whether if you wear contact lenses, your vision's short sightedness will increase or stay the same compared to wearing glasses?

2nd, how long does 2 boxes (6 disposable lens) last you ?

my shortsightedness is just 0.75 and 1.00, astigmatism is just 0.75 for both eyes.. thinking of going for contacts since cant see at night properly..

most of the short-sightedness is due to long axial length which means that ur eye ball is long. rigid contact lens which is called RGP can help prevent or reduce progression of refractive error/eye power by flattening ur cornea to certain degree. glasses definitely cant do that as its placed a distance away from ur eyes.

special type of RGP called orthokeratology lens (ortho K) can remove refractive power for most eyes. try google it for more info if interested but it costs a bomb.

2 boxes lens which contain 6 pieces in each box can last u 6 months coz u need to put lens on both eyes, provided they are monthly disposable lens.

if u r going to wear lens and do a lot of driving at night, then toric lens is the best option for u. thanks

My prescription's about -7.00 for both eyes and I have astig (can't remember what cylinder). The clinic I visit prescribes me RGPs (the last ones I got were Menicon-Z) citing better ocular health. What do you think?

i definitely agree with them, Menicon-Z is 1 of the best RGPs in market, same par with it will be Boston XO. both of them have the highest oxygen permeability thru the lens to cornea, provide superior visual correction and show excellent performance against astigmatism. both contain UV absorber which can help prevent cataract. benefits of long term corneal health, vision, comfort and wettability in order to reduce the burden to the cornea.

just 1 disadvantage, they r more fragile than other type of RGPs.

What do you mean by fragile? As in, they break more easily, bend out of shape more easily, scratch more easily, or?

2 boxes can last 6 months??

or do u mean 6 pairs or 3 months?

they break more easily than the other RGPs. bend of out shape (flexure) is still not prominent as they r quite flexible and usually return to original shape pretty well. scratch resistance wise they r as good or better than the other RGPs.


if 1 box has 6 pieces, then 2 boxes u will have 12 pieces, as u got 2 eyes that wear lens, so with the 12 pieces u will be able to use them for 6 months then. thanks

1)I would like to ask about the new Bausch & Lomb ReNu Multiplus Solution. Is it suitable?

2) How if i have sensitive eyes? How long it takes for eyes to get use to contact lense. Will my eye turn red o sumtin after using it during the beginning?

If using yearly lens how to take care it?

if u are using bausch & lomb contact lens, then its good coz all their lens store using renu multiplus in the plastic seal. but it doesnt really matter coz nowadays contact lens solution are pretty much very similar. if u using silicone hydrogel lens, then better use optifree or solo care aqua.

what is ur eye sensitive to? silicone hydrogel lens is suitable for all sensitive, even allergic eyes. u will have foreign body sensation when u 1st wear the lens, mild redness but should not last for more than an hour.

for yearly softlens, u should use protein removal tablet at least once a week. daily cleaner solution will be great too.

if yearly RGP lens, u can send it to optical shop for 'recycling' once a few months. thanks

Thanks for the responses so far. Another one, when would you recommend a patient RGPs over soft lenses?

i strongly recommend RGP rather than softlens especially for those with corneal astigmatism.

also for teenagers in order to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness).

patients with corneal disease, warpage, or irregularity can benefit only from GP contact lenses to smooth out the front surface of the eye for appropriate refraction of light. Examples include: keratoconus, corneal transplants, refractive surgery, corneal trauma, and warpage. Visual quality can be improved dramatically with GP contact lenses, compared with soft lenses or spectacles, and many patients depend on them to function visually.

Thanks. I don't think I have any of those other conditions, but I do have corneal astig (tested with a corneal topo).

RGP correct corneal astigmatism easily by masking the oblong cornea and providing a surface that optically performs like a spherical cornea. thanks

Just wondering, I know it's not a healthy practice. I tend to wear my contacts when I feel like it, as in when I'm going somewhere that's nice. Technically I wear my contacts only like one or twice a week. The rest I just use my glasses. And I find it a waste to throw it after one month opening it. So I tend to still use it even after a month considering I rarely use it. I know you would say that it is not advisable, but what can happen if say I continue using it for at least 3 months? Thanks!

as long as u still can see clear n feel comfortable with the lens, then its ok. monthly disposable lens means u can use it on daily basic for 30 days, if u only use it once or twice a week n take good care of it, u can keep using it. after 30 days of usage then u must discard it.

yes, power range from plus to minus, suitable for short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.

there are contact lens for old ppl with presbyopia too, ie. bifocal & mulitfocal contact lens which have a combination of power. thanks

yes, u must at least have ur spectacle power so that i can convert it to ur contact lens power.

price is the same not matter what power, but those contact lens that correct short or long sightedness with astigmatism (toric lens) cost more for sure.

I'm using contact lenses for quite some times already (6-7yrs already), recently I got problem with the bright light (on day light) or high beam of light esp during driving at night. Not tht really serious (I think), but from time to time if the light so bright....I will definitely get a headache....izzit means tht I got a astigm? Wht brand of contact lense shall I use next time?

hi, yes its likely that u have developed astigmatism which ur normal contact lens can no longer cover. its best to get ur eyes check by optometrist to make sure the 'light' problem is due to astigmatism.

if u have -0.75 astigmatism or above, then u will need toric lens, most commonly used will be softlens toric by Bausch & Lomb. if u have dry eye problem, then purevision toric would be ur best choice. thanks

It's all about hygiene if you wear contact lens ? Like if you wanna take it off , You gotta wash your hand with soaps and stuff. I wanted to try one but it is quite a hassle to me . How do you think of it ? TS

no doubt, hygiene is the most important requirement before start using lens. if u r those ppl who always out n ard, then u can try daily lens which can be replaced everyday without much hygiene hassle. thanks

What is the difference for the price then ? For monthly and daily ... But maximum hour of usage is still 8 hours right ?

daily lens is definitely more expensive than monthly lens on long term, but it offers great hygiene as u only used it once and throw it at end of the day. daily lens price is ard rm 80 to 90 a box which has 30 pieces, while monthly lens range from 50 to 60 a box, which has 3 or 6 pieces depending on brand & type.

daily lens i would recommend acuvue moist, it allows u to wear them for long hours, up to 12 max but i dont recommend that long hour wear for the sake of ur ocular health. thanks

Halo..i used to wear monthly disposable CL, and currently m using the daily disposable lense (Ie.focus dailies toric daily lens) as i hav astigmatism problem)...but the thing is...i do not know y it's really difficult for me to take out the lenses at night...too dry?but then i use eye drops wor.....i have been experiencing this problem ever time i put on this lense...

I feel like throwing away them but they are a bit costly lur...aiks..

Hmm...I think I will look around and ask the optometrist first because I'm gonna get my eyes recheck anyway. Thank you for your explanation as it helps me a lot .

focus lens is well known for its slippery characteristic due to its material & coating, but its good for ur eyes as it smoothens the blinking process to encourage better tears coverage on lens surface, thus clearer vision. some monthly toric lens has the same problem too, but practice makes perfect.

when eyes too wet, lens sticks better on cornea. lens drop off when eyes too dry. thanks

I feel like changing coz everytime my eyes would suffer when trying to take out the lenses

I bought contact lenses 2 months ago, and I can't seem to wear them. Well, the cause is... I am afraid of putting something on top of my eye. How do I overcome this fear?

Same here but my problem is the opposite.
I have no problem putting the contact lens on but it is rather difficult to remove them at the end of the day

So, I have a question for you. How to check whether the lens is approved or not. As we can see, there are too many Korean lens, and I need a confirmation that those lens will not create any harm to our eyes.

What organization is responsible to approve the contact lens?

For example, if the lens is approved by FDA, means it will not harm our eyes?

hi, u can try putting the lens on the white part of ur eye 1st, stretch ur eyelids apart as far as possible then look up or down and put the lens on. once its in, then release pulling ur lids, and look straight ahead. the soft lens will sit on ur cornea automatically. even if u push too hard, ur eye will just feel abit of pressure and ur cornea wont be scratch unless u got long fingernail. the contact lens actually protect ur eye from getting scratch by nail. thanks


hi, make sure u blink ur eyes a few times 1st before attempting to remove the lens. then open wide and use the pulp of ur index finger to move/slide the lens to a side, towards the white part of ur eye. then only pinch it using index finger and thumb. thanks


its better to use semi hard lens than soft lens unless u can no longer tolerate it. RGP help slow the progression of ur refractive error, more benefit than harm.

the only way to make sure the lens is safe to be used is by sending the lens to health ministry for a check.

u need to email FDA to make sure the product is checked and approved to be safe. many korean lens put FDA approval but i m not so sure about that, thanks

yesterday as my first time wearing contacts for about 8 hours, and about 3 hours, the eye starts to feel heat around o.o should i take it out and put it back inside? or am i the person who is not the contact lens person ): i look better without spects T_T

hi, u should remove the lens immediately if ur eyes feel intense discomfort or pain. u can give the lens another trial the next day and if u still face the same problem then its best to stop wearing them & consult ur optometrist. thanks

its not painful or not comfortable, its just like heat around the eyes, but the next day was better, todays is 4th day, the heat is less now, when its your first time wearing contacts, do you feel the same too?

i cant remember how i felt when 1st started wearing lens but its good that u actually practice building up ur wearing time slowly. 1st day 4 hours, then increase further 2 hours the subsequent day, till reach 8 hours a day max. try not to wear more than 10 hours unless u r using extended wear lens. i have seen too many cases ended up with irreversible ghost vessels on cornea nowadays.

pls stop wearing the lens if the heat sensation persist and its always good to consult ur optom. thanks

hi mr, i have bought hard lens.RGP-rigid gas permeable lens. but i cant wear it as it seems to makes my eyes very watery after i apply the lens. i have try to consult to my optometrist and she did gave me chromolyn sodium to reduce my papilla size as i have allergic rhinitis. after one month usage, i try to wears the RGP lens but still my eyes becomes very watery. it is very uncomfortable and causes runny nose that i havent use it until now. i hope that u could help me with this ya..

u might have to wait till ur papillary conjunctivitis fully resolved before trying the lens again. if still cant adapt to it, then u might not be suitable for contact lens wear. thanks

I am very new to CLs. I only wore them once which was the day I was getting my CL. I'm not really sure what type is it but its really soft and its called 'Dailies'. Is this brand recommended?

Well.. Maybe I could tell you a little about myself so you could recommend me a certain type of CL. I'm a student. I drive everyday. I usually drive from morning til night during weekends. I usually stay up to 12 hours. I use computers a lot at home(Average of 6 hours), about 3~6 hours if I'm going to any cyber cafes. Just if you're wondering I'm wearing those glasses which have anti-radiations.

Btw, In your first reply which was to user 'zorange', you mentioned about RGP lens could reduce or prevent power increment. Is that really true? Is it proven?

hi, dailies lens is good for hygiene purpose or for those who only wear lens occasionally.

there are many brands of dailies lens. i think u need a lens which permit u to wear for long hours without causing dryness problem.

rgp is definitely 1 of best, it suits dry eyes & can wear for long hours. yes, its proven to reduce or prevent power increment. thanks

good question, no 1 really knows whether rgp protect against radiation or not but many believe radiation cannot pass through the rgp lens, so it blocks radiation.

dailies lens is soft lens, while rgp = rigid gas permeable lens. they r different. softlens cant prevent or reduce power increment. thanks

This I can help....................
In most soft contact lenses, putting in in is more difficult that taking it out and in your case, I believe that you must have those very slippery type of Contact lens.
No problem at all, do it more often and you can take it out even without looking into a mirror. As for those slippery type, yoou need to press the lens then pinch the lens out and is that so simple. Please remember all these time, you are only touching the lens and not any part of your cornea.

Don't worry cos you are learning from a Professional in the field.

Use lens lubricant if and when require and stop using the contaact lenses if pain or rednes persist or otherwise, your eyes will be in serious trouble. Remember to blink more often and esp. if you are using the computer or use artificial tears for contact lenses wearers when needed. It will help to prevent the redness and pain in the eyes cause by the drying of contact lenses on the cornea.

My suggestion is to change your contact lenses to another type as your contact lenses seem to me as those of high water content and drying up very fast on your eyes as your eyes are those we refer to as poor tears quality type or simply dry type of eyes...these eyes are no suitable for contact lenses but since the market has some good lenese for your type of cases. Before any serious damages done to your eyes, do change them to a lower content type and also in the market are some very good type for your dry eyes like Focus monthly, the slippery type; I am not promoting any brand as I have no other bus here but just to help to prevent any unfortunate incidence which you may regret and I may feel bad in future for knowing and not helping a fellow human being.

So, if any offence to anyone here, my sincere apologies if offended and if someone selling you cheap, well buy but you must know what is good for you. Rmember that I am not selling anything but didn't mean to be a busy body.

many said that those that have dry eye should use low water contect lenses..i have dry eye and i have been using soflens 38 all these while (about 10 years) before changing to use air optix about 3 months ago as the salesgirl told me that its good for dry eye and can even wear it to sleep.. but it feels very uncomfortable with the lens on and my eyes feel more dry compared to when i wear soflens 38. last time i used to be able to wear soflens for the whole day only until late at night then i feel a bit not comfortable.. but with the air optix, i can barely last more than 4 hours.. i went back to ask the salesgirl and she told me that i have to take time to get use to it.. but its already almost 3 months.. why is't so? i thought it was suppose to be better? i still have 3 more pairs of the air optix and it will be wasted if i don't use them..

The salesgirl lied and I do not know about the Optix brand but will tell you to stop as if it is good for your eyes, it will work at once without having to endue longer time.

Softlens 38 is a low water content lens and it is recommended for poor tear patient but it is rather too thin and soft for my liking Let me recommend you a certain brand but then you need to Pm me as I don't want to seem to advertise for the brand in the forum as I am not their agent or acting on behalf of the supplier.

If you find them not comfortable, better discard them as they may do much damages to your eyes than the little money you pay for them. don't be penny wise, pound foolish, my friend.. hope this help you to decide

I have had glass for two years now - I don't have to wear them all the time. Just for driving and watching TV and stuff like that. I don't like the glasses on me and I'd love to try out contact lenses.

thanks to west wing for helping out. i have seen some of ur posts and they r quite informative. are u working in optical line? i read some of ur swiftlet posts too, my dad has a few bird house, but not doing very well.

softlens 38 is more comfortable than air / o2 optix as it is softer and has a thinner edge, thus less lens sensation. for those who have been wearing lens for quite some time, chances are papillary conjunctivitis (PC) has developed on inner upper lids. when switch to lenses with thicker edge like o2 or air optix, then PC will get worse as the edge of lens rub on the papilla more everytime u blink.

as for dryness, assuming ur tears & environment do not change, then most likely the thicker o2/ air optix absorb more water component from ur tears then the thinner softlens 38. thicker = more silicone hydrogel (hydrophilic) = absorb more water. softlens 38 is made of polymacon which is less hydrophilic. so far, i have not seen any other cases like u yet. if not ok with air optix, then better stick with softlens 38. take care.

hi there, im currently wearing 'Mediflex 55UV' but i felt that after several hours (5 to 6 hours) my eyes begin to feel dry and odd. Last week, even a small rub on my eye could make it drop out of my eye. Do you know whts the reason? Any contact lenses tht is good to recommend? thx!

when eyes are too dry to supply the lens with the water it needs, then the lens will not conform well to the cornea, sometime a hard blink can causes the dry lens to drop out too.

u must use low water content lens, esp if u plan to wear for long hours. will pm u for the lens that i recommend. thanks

I'm wearing a B&L SofLens Toric, just wondering:

1.) Does this lens help to control power?
2.) If not, what lens is recommended for people my age (secondary school) to control power?
3.) Is it recommended to undergo LASIK once I'm able to do so? Would wearing contact lenses affect the result of the operation directly/indirectly?

All soft lenses do not help control power, only RGP (rigid gas permeable) lens help control power. try oculus boston XO, good for long hours wear n myopia control.

u need to wait till ur eyes power steady for at least 1 yr before consider lasik, its ok to do it if u have no dry eye problem.

if u have been a long term contact lens user, then the optometrist will ask u to stop wearing lens for at least 10 days or so to make sure ur cornea shape is back to normal and steady before a further check n surgery. thanks

This might sound a little bit irrelevant but if we go for laser surgery will our short-sightedness still continue to gradually increase?

I just tried wearing contact last week and it takes forever to wear on my left eye, so now i'm still wearing spec if nothing important.

lasik center will only do it when they confirm ur eyes power are steady. in some cases, there will be power shift after lasik but nothing major.

practice makes perfect. try more, then u will be able to insert lens easier. thanks

never use o2 optik before. but do u know the differences between o2 and biomedic?which one better?

o2 lower water content, higher oxygen transmissibility, better in terms of ocular health.

if ur astigmatism is less than -0.75 D, then normal lens will do. astigmatism -0.75 or above can corrected with toric contact lens. thanks

sorry i have no idea whats the latest update on the case. yes there are still many ppl using renu or complete solution nowadays, i think they have been proven to be safe to use.

i myself is using freshkon solution nowadays as my uni research team has done some test on it and found to be quite good, even with silicone hydrogel contact lens.

my sister just got her eye prescription from nearest opto shop because she wants to try on contact lense, this is her 1st time and the salesperson recommend omega56 monthly contact lens... i never heard about it and rarely can find any info about this brand in the internet... do u have any suggestion? because im thinking of better lens like soflens38 or air optix for her, better quality with cheaper price if im ordering from u...

omega 56 is a monthly disposable lens, manufactured by Igel. a very normal material lens, 56 or 58% water content lens, light blue tinted with UV block. high profit margin for shop ppl, sure they recommend it. nothing special about this lens.

i face difficulty removing the contact lens rather than wearing it.. it's hard to peel it off.. it's not becoz my eyeballs are dry, i've use drops to moisture them but it's still hard to remove.. duno y...??

overwear contact lens will coz terrible problem for sure, ie infection or ghost vessel. this can be solved with extended wear lens and good hygiene.

hi, only the lens should come into contact with ur cornea, so u will not scratch ur eye. pls keep ur fingernail short n clean.
focus brand lens are famous for their slipperiness, its easy to insert than remove.
if other brands, then u might not have learned the right technique, pls consult ur friends who wear lens for long time and ask for advice. practices make perfect. good luck bro.

what would be your advice for first time user of contact lenses? the market is fill with all sorts of brands and type is there any general guideline on how to choose the right lense for user?

i used to try B&L... i cant remember precisely which type. but feel that it is very dry and uncomfortable. after that i dare not try anymore... is this because the brand does not suit me?

Let me share with you my experience before jialat comes and give you his/her advice.
I tried various contact lenses before found a suitable one (Ciba Vision Air Optix)
I have tried both the cheap and expensive range from B&L and Acuvue and all made my eyes red and pain.
When I went to see an optometrist, straight away she said that I cant wear contact lenses bcoz my eyes are too dry and I have this condition which I cant remember what now.
I went to see another optometrist, he said there's nothing wrong with my eyes and because I have tried so many things before, he (randomly maybe?) recommended Air Optix. So now I can use already.Yay!
Been with AirOptix for two years now.
so maybe u shud keep trying until you find one that's suitable for you. Another tip that my optometrist shared with me is - dip say, a towel in warm/hot water and put on your eyelid for few seconds (repeat few times). good if your eyes are like mine oh.

seems like u got dry eye problem, so its better to use low water content lens. if u plan to use for long hours, more than 8 hours then try silicone hydrogel lens which permits 5 times more oxygen to pass thru the lens to supply ur cornea. air optix as mentioned by redrose9802 is a good choice. thanks

warm compress helps with tears secretion but its best not to overdo it. just blink ur eyes more then its good enough. thanks

can i ask what the difference between toric bausch and lomb and toric 66 bausch and lomb?izit change packaging ?coz last time i order got toric 66 now only toric .

Brand of contact lens used: Acuvue Clear (1 month)
Comment: The lens is soft and thin. Feel more comfortable but the lens surface is easier to stick with dirt.

Brand of contact lens used: Ciba Vision (1 month)
Comment: The lens hard and thicker. Feel like it's harder to take off lens from eye, but the surface less prone to stick with dirt.

Hi jialat, I've some questions here about the B&L progressive contact lens. How does it actually work on a prebyopia patient? Let's say a patient with -5.00D on both eyes and Add +2.00D, how do we determine what power to prescribe?

hi, on dominant eye, u can try -4.75 for distance, low add for near.
non dominant eye, try -4.50 for distance, high add for near.

to be honest, B&L soft multifocal lens is pretty crap, success rate is only 60% according to most practitioners. many ppl stopped fitting it coz it failed to give customers clear distance and near vision.

if u know RGP, u can try 'RENOVATION' multifocal rgp, success rate is 95%. not many practitioners fit this lens yet as they are not well exposed to it, my consultants started fitting it since early 2008 till now, make damn alot of money. this lens is carried by Oculus, call them up and ask for a simplified fitting guide. thanks

hi, may i know where is ur location in kl? quite many good experience optometrists in kl, will recommend u to those ard ur area.

price very much depends on location but i think its ard 700 to 800 a pair which can last for 1 to 2 yrs.

ortho k cost ard 4k in kl nowadays. i think its better to stick with normal rgp lens 1st. make sure ur eyes can cope well with rgp then only consider ortho k. thanks

hi, i used to wear B&L (monthly dispose) for 4-5 years for many years ago during my uni time, but stop wearing for quite some time (due to my work need to face with computer for long hours), & back to my specs until 1-2 years back when i decide to wear contact lense. I wore focus dailies for hygiene purpose. However, many times (but not always) when I wear, i feel quite dry (but still tolerable). But most of the time, i have difficulty in taking out the contact lense. And after i successfully took it out, my eyes will become reddish.
What is the best brand for me if i'm looking at daily or weekly dispose contact lense? Currently i just look around for brands like B&L soflens daily dispose. How about Avucue 1-day moist, acuvue oasys & acuvue 1 day define? will these types suits me better?

if daily, please use acuvue moist.

2weekly lens then acuvue oasys will be the best choice.

daily lens will be more hygienic than biweekly lens for sure but cost more.

hi jialat, i have enquired about the RGP in midvalley megamall at menara optometrist and they have quoted me at RM600 for a pair of Oculus Boston XO. is that reasonable? are there any other brands that i should seek out? and the person has told me that the RGP will control my nearsightedness and it will not go up when using the RGP. is that true?
