I'll be planning to buy a new macbook aluminum soon. Since the price is pretty much standardized for all mac stores, is there any added advantage from buying from mac city, machines, or any of the other mac stores?

Tx.

i know machines give 2% rebate (no real cash, but you can use it to buy other product).

i myself bought @ machines klcc. the 2% rebate, i bought ipod wall plug charger...i just need to add rm14 for the ipod after deduct the rebate i got from macbook purchase. even the rm14 i paid got rebate 5% since i bought ipod accessory.

sumore machine got ezy payment without extra charges. other shop i dunno, never buy anything.

all mac product...i guess 2%...ipod..5%

If its 2 % "cashback", that can amount to a significant difference if I buy a macbook. The thing is, 1Utama is closer.

Maybe I can go to Mac City and strike a deal.

Mac City in 1U is where i bought the Coolcase for my iPod touch... That shop seems to be very popular on weekends, it was almost full last Saturday!

But when Machines opens, Mac City is sure to face intense competition over there!

Yes, Mac City has better Customer service support. The staff in Machines (well the ones in mid-valley) are quite clueless most of the time and are just wandering around.

It might vary from store to store, oh well.

Hm, perhaps the staff there have no training? It seems like it anyway. They don't seem like a very professional bunch.

BTW, Apple Store Malaysia just launched, I might just order direct since its cheaper with the educational discount, and free shipping.

used to buy all my mac products from mac city until one day ass itchy go and bought a mac desktop from machines, sunway. the staff were a bunch of dumbasses to say the least, had no idea what they're selling to begin with. then the mac broke down within 2 months from because of the 10.5.3 update but they said i corrupted the OS and wanted 200 bucks to fix it. and they asked me to bring it to the gardens branch to get it fixed because they really had no idea what was wrong with it. damn smart. want money but no idea what was wrong.

recently, the hdd died and sent it back to mac city, didn't want to deal with incompetent machines staff. they verified the hdd was dead within 5 minutes, gave me a 1 to 1 replacement within a week. no hassle, no charges, no questions asked. the staff are friendly, even gave me demo of a JBL iPod dock.

in other words, machines are useless and incompetent and mac city rocks.

Hm, my problem was with a battery (1st gen black notebooks). The apple website said it was replaceable even though it was out of warranty. I spelled out the website on the phone -- don't know if they had dyslexia or something but they said they couldn't browse to it(!!). Ended up calling the KLCC branch and they said their engineers knew about the problem and it could be replaced. Called back machines in mid-valley, told them what the KLCC branch said and then everything was okay and they could replace it.

I think it depends where you go -- the KLCC are pretty well trained perhaps because of the cliental in that area.

Mac City has good service. I remember when the Mac Book Air first launched they were like one of the first stores to have the laptop -- machines (mid-valley) only got theirs like weeks (again unacceptable!) later. At the store they answered all my questions, and showed me how to use it. Also was looking out for some expensive earphones and they actually put the effort out to look in the stock base and told me that their shipment for for them was actually coming out that evening.

Didn't the Mac City at 1Utama replace another mac store? Or was it just bought out? Because I remember they renovated.

If Mac City can match the educational pricing of the Apple Store, or throw in some goodies I would def. buy from them again.

Hey cool -- what price did you get your macbook for? If the stores throw in free gifts, ESPECIALLY a keyboard protector (I'm looking for one) then I'm in.

act i think it depends on where u go.i have no problem with machines.usually i always go to the garden branch, looking for some accessories n the ipod dock etc.
the staff is good in comm,i must say, n they are always available to help u.n also smile.

for the midvalley branch, usually they..i dont know, letting me juz wandering inside the shop, give me freedom to look for smthin or juz ignore me.but ill always alone in midvalley,i mean they didnt ask u "may i help u sir" or kind of thing.sometimes it also give me..u know, when no money but want to window shp,it gives me kinda freedom. blush.gif

staff in machines at mid vel n garden always tuka2 tempat.so u might see staff at garden, then she or he will be at mid vel later.thanks to joy, chinese girl who act help me during buying ipod touch last saturday.its a busy weekend, but she still has effort to demo the touch to me.

mac city always rock.i go there twice, during weekend and after the launching of new macbook.i remember jazz (although hes not remember me.. nod.gif ),for the first visit,he demo to me the jbl dock for ipod.lama jugak i thing, about 20 minutes, and give me some opinion also.second visit,he demo to me the new macbook, also the entry level one,waa..also give me comparison(although i knew it already),the weakness of new macbook brows.gif(although i knew it already too).he kinda give the customer the pro n cons of this product, that product, which is brilliant.thats what we want as customer.this fella is good. thumbup.gif

buy at apple online store if you're a student..got discount there..

or else, buy at machines..
got memberships and points..
you can cash in the points for any products at machines..

last time i remember cgcomputers offers rm500 voucher to shop for anything inside the shop if you buy macbook.
now no more i think..

my recommendation is, go and shope around all these shops, and buy from the most friendly one.

Haven't encountered any useless staffs at Machines@MV so far, which is still my selected branch. Just popped by Epicentre@Pavillion yesterday and there are also one or two new staffs so they tend to check back with their supervisors more often.

Here's what I have to share.. I was inquiring regarding DDR3 ram upgrades for the macbook. Epicentre would've charged me rm999 for 2x2gb modules, but are willing to accept trade-ins of my old ones, so it becomes rm799. I called Machines(where i got my macbook from) and asked about the price. 2x2gb modules would only cost rm799, however there are no tradeins for rams.

@xaw5126 you're from machines ey?

It's hard to be sure but from your post are you suggesting that somehow, our Malaysian government is subsidizing purchases made at the Apple Education store?

If so, dude, how old are you?

If not, could you please learn to post so people could actually understand you?

Hm, the only benefits now that I can think of from the mac stores over here is that you'll be able to get your item immediately. I would be kind of worried to have my macbook shipped all the way from China -- someone might steal it.

BTW, anyone have experience with the malaysia apple mac store? How many days did it take to ship your item?

i strongly think that government pay for the discount..
u see, the agreement is..one year you can only buy ONE mac, but unlimited ipod.
ipod no discount, mainly because it is not an eductional tools.
computers are educational tools.

government always give discounts for something related to education.
im from public UNI, and there's original windows vista ultimate selling at half the original price.
and microsoft office too.
but there is a red sticker on the box..got book picture on it. it writes there,
"ACADEMIC PRICE, not for use in commercial environment"

when you buy books also your parents can get income tax waive. if you are working, that you'll get the discount lah.

thats why i think its the government who pay for the discount. but i dont say it's a "yes" . dont get me wrong.

Well, it could be Apple doing their bit for the education world I guess? It would be highly unlikely that our dearest government will be paying for it. As for your Windows Vista ultimate and Office selling at cheaper price in Uni, that's actually Microsoft doing their bit for the education world as well. In US, doing so is also a type of marketing, to show that they actually contributed their part to the world, or to fulfill a certain quota by the government to do something for the country.

err bro i think you got confused between the government subsidies and apple store discount. Err i can vouch that this is apple's effort to lend a hand to the students, and its available to all places that has an apple online or apple store, the reason why is only one mac is because people can get greedy and buy a few macs under edu price even though they are not students and has nothing to do with the government haha. Seriously the only thing that they did is not tax computer items.

And if you keep on buying stuff in machines can get the rebates, accessories 10%.ipod 5% and macs and softwares 2%,if they have member preview sale they'll call u lah. On the other hand u see whether the wall plug is useful or not, make sure its a good one(Belkin or Griffin preferably)

Why?

For the stuff?

American AppleStores may have more stuff but so does the online version as compared to our local one. The Malaysian retail one, should it exist, would only have access to the same suppliers as our present resellers. They will undoubtedly be under the exact same constraints.

... or for the people?

If you've been to American AppleStores, you'll notice the people they employ are the same type of 20-somethings that are employed by our local resellers. Only difference being hair-colour as natural shade of brown versus the dye-ed version that seems peculiar to handphone and computer sales staff.

Reason is simple: they work cheap and need the job. Hardly the most knowledgeable and customer friendly type but its the bottom-line that counts in the end.

lol thats really funny but its true! Back in like 2002 when I bought my powerbook 12" (sniff, a beauty of a machine) I got it from the Apple store in Atlanta. The manager had like tattoos and spiky hair, lol. They had a problem with my order (online) so they gave me my powerbook with a hundred bucks off.

The greatest thing about the Apple store is the promotion -- *ESPECIALLY* the back to school promotion.

I got a powerbook + free printer + free ipod (10 GB white) at that time. What is there to complain?

And when I dropped my ipod in water, they replaced it on the spot for free (I told them it just stopped working). Apple has one of the best customer service and that makes me a life long customer.

I guess it depends on how useful the promotional items are to you. They change from time to time & with the economy turning sour, you never know, they might just give out more stuff.

Hm, are these promos with the macbooks alone? Or do you have to purchase an Apple Care?

One of the shops i went to were giving out an apple mouse with a MBP purchase but you also had to get the apple care.

AFAIK its still 849 in online store? How do they rip you off? Unless you are talking about the auto enroll option that is cheaper? Like i say both online store and apple reseller give 2 different shopping options.

edu pricing. If you tally a macbook & apple care edu pricing you'll come up with a total much less then the promotional stuff they give you, inc. the 'free' apple mouse.

But that's just IT isn't it. Salespeople just fail to understand that their job is to ASSIST people who enter the store.

Instead they see people in the store as the source of their sales commission. And those who do not provide said commission are ignored. Its a failure to see the big picture, an emphasis on the short term profit versus long term gain.

Totally agreed! And I am one of those "customers" who likes to walk into a Mac shop and just wandering around and touch here touch there tongue.gif ...and yet walk out the store without purchasing anything but actually I am doing price and customer service comparison so that I can decide which place should I buy the stuff I want.

So if it happens that during my "wandering" session that time, the customer service sucks I will just walk out the store, for them I am just another guy which cannot provide sales commission, but actually it's a loss of sales smile.gif

So far, Machines customer service are not as bad as mentioned in the forum but I think it all depends on the sales person who serves you. If he/she is just another go for commission and no product knowledge type of person, then the whole Mac experience would not be good afterall. I did come across a few nice sales person at Machines and it's rare to find nowadays hahaaaaa! And I did come across some super blur blur sales persons as well plus some LCLY too tongue.gif

Overall, Epicentre still slightly better than Machines in terms of customer service!

Theres also quite of number of people who dont want sales people to breath down their necks. Even if the sales person comes and offers assistance they'll be shunned. Like i say a sales person sees hundreds of customers but the customer only sees 1 or 2 sales person but we always place the blame on the sales person, customer service is prudent but most of us abuse it to a certain degree but we still blame the sales person for it. It works both ways i guess.

How difficult is it to say "hello, if you need me I'm here to help" with a smile then allow the shopper some personal space?

Instead what you normally get is a "Cans I helps you?" followed by look that says "If you don't want to buy, you might as well leave now".

every store has senior and junior staffs, some are part time too and just started to learn about Mac. if you really have any question, you have to find the right people too.

some of the stores provide training too. you may want to join them and ask the question during those time.

in life, we cant change others BUT it's good to change ourself to get the benefit for our own advantage. just a thought

I think it varies from one store to the other, those that i have seen welcome me to the store and give me the freedom to browse around the store, they always maintain a safe distance, some chivalry is nice but too much of it will make u wonder if its merely for sales or its just being nice.

On Dec 5 (Friday), I called several Machines outlet for the new MBA or MBP, but they said, they only have MB. They cannot tell when they can get the new MBP/MBA.
Thus, I bought the MBP at Mac Studio on Dec 6 (Sat).
Today, I saw the new advert saying that they have Christmas deals for the MB and MBP (from Dec. 7 onwards).
Damn!! I have a Machines Membership but I bought the MBP one day earlier at Mac Studio.

The Machines rep should have told me about the Christmas Deals when i called them on Dec. 5.... !!

And furthermore... I have Amex Card.... ! *sigh*

@myxery,
I don't know if it's fortunate or unfortunate but I'm really not in the market for a brand new Mac *siGh* and since this new shift in role at work I no longer am able to put in an acquisition request for a brand new Mac *siGh*

It's gonna be Windows from now at work *siGh*

Btw I thought EpiCentre too had some promotions going on?

nimrod - Its not the freebies that i really missed (since I got some freebies from Mac Studio too)... but its more regarding using Machines to get the points for rebate (I'm a member).
Its worth RM 194 !! Arrghhh!! I can buy more accessories later with this savings...

What I am frustrated is that nobody can give me a hint that there is a promotion on 7th December during my call on the 5th Dec....*sigh* ....

@ Trong-FC
the renovations for the machines in 1U aren't complete, so we can't release the opening date just yet.
I believe it will be before Christmas, but that's just my own opinion...

@Edoras,
please check the T&C available on the machines website, it does mention that promo items are not part of the rebates program.

But the price of the MBP remained the same as regular price except that they have freebies. Do they consider that as "promo items" too?
I thought a "real" promo items when it is priced lower than the regular (example the recent sale of the older MBA and MB)

CODE
Accrual Award Level and Corresponding Reward
Accessories - 10% Rebate
iPods - 5% Rebate
Mac / ACPP (AppleCare Protection Plan) - 2% Rebate

Points redemption is awarded based on regular priced terms. Not applicable for products on promotion.

I asked at Epicentre for RAM upgrade, they quoted the same price as Apple Online Store which is RM485 (upgrade frm 2gb to 4gb). Seems like they are matching wth online store pricing.

hey bro thanks for the link biggrin.gif

"The 'late 2008' MacBook Pro officially "supports up to 4GB" of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM. However, that never stopped us from trying to stuff more in. We were able to expand our MacBook Pro 2.8 to 6GB by replacing one of the 2GB SO-DIMMs with a 4GB module (courtesy of Trans International)."

A 2.8Ghz MBP? wow...what about 2.4? u mean all MBP able to susport up to 6GB Ram...but do they have it in the open market?

6GB of RAM in the "Late 2008" MacBook Pro
Any problems? Speed penalty?

CONCLUSION
The 6GB configuration produced essentially identical benchmark results to the 4GB configuration in our 2.8GHz MacBook Pro. The difference ranged from -.5% to +1.7% or an average difference of +.28% or less than 1/3 of one percent. I call that negligible. Or, in other words, you should have no worries about a speed penalty imposed by non-matching memory modules and loss of interleaving.
It seems that the performance improvement is so negligible... hmmm.. not worth the upgrade to 6GB...

Can someone explain to me how they counting the points from purchase item in Machines?

And the 2% discount can be proceed for the next purchase item, rite?

I read that max is RM500. But i no idea how much points to collect to reach a discount of Rm500.

How much money i should spent to get that Rm500 discount?!

If the point system is going to spent alot to get that small amount of discount.

I will go to Switch for longer months installment.

Was just at Machines, Gardens (MidValley) trying to decide between the 20" and 24" iMacs. Two sales assistants came to offer their help but still gave me space to play around on my own. thumbup.gif I don't like being "hounded" when I'm in a shop.

Was overhearing one of them explaining Macs to a newbie. She spent quite some time with him patiently explaining thru iMacs, Mac Pros, Macbooks, iPods and even AppleTV. From what i could hear, she's pretty much knowledgeable about all. Only comment was when she said you could rent shows using the AppleTV. Not exactly right since iTunes Malaysia doesn't allow you to do that yet. Didn't catch her name but her tag had a "Junior Sales" on it. (BTW, when she smiles, some might even say she's hot wink.gif )

Ok, so, anybody want to try to convince me the extra RM1100 is worth it to get the 24" over the 20"? Yes, I know about the rumours of upcoming MacWorld but I'd rather get it this month. Tax rebate being one of my few reasons for the rush. rclxub.gif

KLmurf,
I can't quite figure out what would you want to be "convinced" to part RM1100?

One of the worse places to ask this is in the shop as the sales person would have to think on his feet and shoot straight from the hip, and I’m guessing “large screen size and faster processor” would be in one of replies given. You need to substantiate yourself if buying a 20" or 24" iMac would fill your needs in the next 3-4 years (the average lifespan of a computer)

Not sure about the tax rebate but you can only claim a purchase every 3 years, unless someone in family in purchasing one next year as well, the choice of waiting for a beef up iMac next year is far more beneficial – more beef for your bucks! Unless you will be dumping the iMac within a year or so… just wait for the new iMac…. Its only less than a month away!

I bought my iPod from Machine@MV and found the staffs quite Okay as well. They might not been as well trained as those from MacCity but they are always willing to help.

Never the less, All staffs from any Apple Resellers are better trained, friendlier and more educated than those we can find from our gov department... smile.gif

KLmurf,
I can't quite figure out what would you want to be "convinced" to part RM1100?
I didn't ask that question in the shop as like you said, would be a futile effort. What I meant was that I am still trying to decide between the 20 and 24in. Technically, the 20" is enough for what I need it to do. As both have the same gpu, the main advantage of the 24 would be bigger screen real estate. I suppose that's something nice (but not critical) to have when editing photos and home movies (consumer level, not pro mind you). Of course, when I think about watching movies on it from my bed... then of course the 24 is fantastic! So basically, my head's saying 20", my heart's saying 24" rclxub.gif

As to the tax rebates..... who knows what might happen next year with the way things are going now wink.gif sweat.gif

Anyway, I'm leaning more towards getting a 20" and a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme now, in preparation of getting a updated AppleTV next year.

please share with me whom you found to be clueless & wandering around...
I'd like to do something about it...
not just @ MV.. at any machines store...
*
Hmmm... do they wear nametag? Should ask them to wear nametag so that customers can write their name here. At one point I almost take the picture of the staff (at MV) busy playing music and using internet on the display mac instead of allowing customers to test the machine, but I think it was too much and don't want to 'tutup periuk nasi org'.

Maccity 1 Utama customer service is not as good as it used to be back 3 years ago when it was MacAsia. Maybe most of their senior sales assistants already left.

p/s: Still can't forget one of the sale assistant at machine gardens confidently telling me that mighty mouse is referring to wireless mouse which which she said is smaller that the wired mouse which she called normal mouse. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I want to go a little off topic here...anybody have any experience with Epicenter before? I went to the PC Fair today and saw their boot. Price for the acessaries was quite good, though, no discount on iMac or MacBook or others... They just bundle it with free gift and free RAM upgrade... Anybody willing to share?

first thing apple is not like pc,mac computers no discount its been like this for a very long time. gifts and ram are good enough, they are already losing margin.

you do realize that pc fair is more of a PC affair than a mac one? whats the point of renting a big booth but not many people buying from you? you lose more money in that way.

The gen 2 version was released in September. I seriously doubt there would be a revision so soon. IF there is, it is likely to be a only software upgrade.

if its 2X1GB sticks inside..they would need to upgrade it to 2X2GB and give you back 2X1GB right?

by the way, can you use the 0% installment for the current Machines promo.. ?

how much is the ram? i heard the stores charge extremely high for ram that you can get from 3rd party sources, e.g. crucial.

http://www.crucial.com/

For example:

4GB Apple MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (15.4-inch) Upgrade

Module Size: 4GB kit (2GBx2)
Package: 200-pin SODIMM
Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300
(72 Ratings)
US $43.99

I bought an airport express when it first came out, broke down in like 13 months right after warrently. It overheated when I brought it back to KL -- do a search on google, lots of problems; don't know if they fixed it.

I like the wireless audio but for reliability I would stick with linksys or belkin (lifetime warranty).

I have both AE and Linksys. Somehow the AE seems faster than the Linksys to download to my Pbook but maybe it's just psychologicial. Also, the AE seems to be smoother with the iphone for surfing.

Total RAM is 3GB. Bit confusing as the promo states "add 2 GB". What they mean is they take out 1GB stick and put in a 2GB stick. The other slot will be occupied with the existing 1 GB making a total of 3GB.

By the way, does anyone know whether there was any offer with Machines in 1 Utama opening today?

just bought the mbp last weekend from the mac discovery fair in 1u.
was tempted by the ram upgrade offer.
they didn't have the extra ram at that time and ask me to come back next week on christmas eve to install the ram coz they say by that time got stock
i told them i'll be leaving to singapore for a trip on 26th.
then on christmas eve, went to 1u, say no stock =.=
celaka ask me come back on xmas day.
come back on xmas day. shop close.....

i'm annoyed with the customer service that they are giving at mac city =.=
is this anyway to treat a customer?
wasted money , time and petrol..
i think its better to just get it from the on9 store or machines.

Yeah i know what u mean bro nimrod... But one thing good about the staff of Mac City is that they really take the trouble to help ur queries ya...

I was with my gf at MC a couple of weeks back and we were looking at those speaker systems for the iPod... We saw one unit that we liked (in a box, no display) and asked whether there is a demo unit that they can show us... The salesperson there really opened up the box and connected the unit to the powersupply so that i can test an iPod for the sound, even though we did not purchase the speakers... thumbup.gif

I think the advantage of machines is the 0% payment plan. There are friendly staff in machines, you just have to go to the right shop -- I find the friendlier staff then to be in the higher-end malls -- e.g. the gardens;

Will be buying my mac soon. waiting for who has the best offer in January. Hopefully that 4 GB ram still holds.

isnt by saying i wanna see see you are basically telling the sales person to give you some breather till you need them later on? of course maccity fellers wont leave you alone, cause their shop so small, and many sales person there and they have to follow the customer around if not another sales person will get the sales. with the amount of free gift maccity is giving i bet the sales person commission is so low they have to be more aggressive and target every single customer eventhough they are not buying, that gives me the creeps if they dont give the space to see see

Ya man, totally agreed with you. Mac City shop are so damn small pusing satu round sudah habis and their range of accessories are so little, of cos the sales person are easy to served you. I still prefer Epicentre and Machines as they have a bigger store and variety range of accessories, and their sales person wont be following you all the time, whenever you need them just flick ur finger and they'll come and help you. rclxms.gif

Well, the new promotions are out. 4 GB of ram if you purchase applecare with your macbook http://www.machines.com.my/Jan_Promo_09.php

Added on January 7, 2009, 5:54 pmman, Macbook 2.4 ghz + apple care -- very expensive. I don't know if that is worth it for the extra 2 gig of ram, does it make much of a difference?

think about it,4799 + 849 = 5648, use ur cc for 12 months, its only 470.67 a month as machine offers 12 months 0% interest free payment with no extra credit card charges. and you getting ram upgrade worth RM798. thats not to bad. if im not mistaken they have merchants with maybank, cimb, citibank, hsbc and AM.

The thing is -- do I really need the 4 GB of ram, is it that useful? I'm only going to be the occasional heavy user, e.g. swapping to vista sometimes to play some games. And isn't mac city giving it out for free anyway without having to buy the apple protection plan? I have a first gen macbook and I didn't buy APP --its still working fine!

eh cmon maccity is just authorized reseller,if apple were to do that then the premium resellers like epi, machines and macstudio will lose out, apple promo for december was just the belkin messenger bag, neoprene sleeve case, capdase keyboard protector and ibass speaker. after that items ran out all the reseller forked out the money to attract customers by giving out their own promo. Maccity was really losing out on each item sold with all the promos they were dishing out, profit from macs are never alot at most also a few hundreds only, the same with any other iT stuff.

Mac City has better service.

Machines has better deals (0 % interest is great)-- so I guess go for the one that appeals to you the most.

Added on January 9, 2009, 10:46 pmbtw, i think i'm going to wait off on my macbook purchase.

The new ilife isn't bundled wit the current macbooks right now. And you still have to buy apple protection care for the extra ram.

Too expensive -- especially in todays economic climate.

ur statement dont u think the apple resellers face the same thing? by asking them deals and freebies, isnt that not helping the situation they are in aswell? imagine the salesmen salary being cut just because all of us want lots os free gifts plus discounts during this economic downturn, like i said before apple product not much profit especially it stuffs. Like the Star has said before we malaysians are mega sales people, our buying rate is still high even though all around the world there is an economic downturn, even now i dont see the queue at LV shops decreasing.

As an iPod reseller, I agree with ur points there mate... Malaysians are really mega-sales ppl but also darn good in asking for discounts and freebies... Many of my buyers are real bargain-seekers and sure ask for further price reduction or freebies, even though margin is not exactly high (and price is already so low!)... But what to do, to get the sale, have to accommodate their requests...

Guys not to offense anyone here...
but this is human nature...ppl tend to get good products with affordable price smile.gif

We are talking purchasing a few thousand ringgit gadgets, where off course earning peanut "ringgit" is very hard to justify no discount/bundle with freebies with the product.

Even buying a normal cell phone, v hope the sales person can throw in memory card or screen protector smile.gif

For marketing side they facing the pressure from consumers not "spending" enough to raise their revenue...for customer, we don’t see any banner with freebies/promotion. Just my opinion~smile.gif

2. Maybank - 4%
3. Ambank - 5 %
4. OCBC - 4%
5. HLBB - 4%

This is my reply from mac city.

Is Machine also having the 4% or 5% charges like the Above?

I have to reconsider to take installment plan or go for lower end model if the charges will costing RM300 such high price.

If you could afford a mac i think ur financial is sound, theres no pay cut there, dont tell me forrumers here who could easily afford a macbook pro or macbook has monetary problems, when theres a need every other financial woes fades off from your mind. For example if you wanna get an LV bag,u'll just get it and i dont see anyone asking LV for freebies or discounts? of course when you do that jatuh standard. When you buy a mac,the mac should be your goal, the freebies shouldnt determine the sale,if u ask freebies and price cuts peecees can offer you that.

The main problem is the tax on IT products... I assume most ppl are earning between MYS2-3k per month as salary and purchase of, say, an iPod touch 16GB costing around 1.1k will surely dent their monthly income by a great chunk...

If this is Singapore, things will be different... There, their overall cost of purchasing for IT products should be lower due to this: assuming a person earning SGD 2-3k but the price of a 16GB iPod touch is around SGD498.00 (iTunes Store)... Of course a person in SG will not feel the pinch compared with us in Malaysia, even though the salary in numbers is similar... Because of the pricing of goods!

dey ... talk about wrong explanation.

Singapore dollar is stronger, due to their economy stronger.
how come this little ciku of a country, not even bigger than Malaysia, can become 1st world economy?

we started at the same place, didn't we?
how come Malaysian RM is not even worth half a Singapore dollar?

main problem is not tax on IT goods, main problem is the rampant corruption from the consumer all the way to the top. since everyone is enjoying the benefits, no one want to make a change. those who campaign for change are also silenced sad.gif

my friend who shopped in Machines (the sunway pyramid branch) had a bad experience. it was blatant customer rip off and false advertising.

around the PC Fair time, Machines advertised that every alu macbook purchased would receive a 'free 2GB RAM' upgrade. obviously you would think they would add a 2GB RAM into the machine - totalling it to 4GB (the macbook comes with 2GB).

when my friend checked her macbook info back home, to her surprise her machine totalled up to only 3GBs of RAM... she then realised to her dismay that the Machines staff took out a 1GB memory that was pre-installed in the macbook, and put in the 'promised/as advertised' 2GB. the 1GB was not returned back to her.

she called asking for it back but Machines gave all sorts of silly rude reasons - that the 1GB 'original apple RAM' is now theirs... this did not mirror the information given in the advertising - or the ad was just misleading. fortunately after another angry phonecall, they gave in and decided to give back the 1GB... but as far as I know her macbook is still 3GB, with an extra 1GB laying around her house.

forgive me if i am confusing... typing this from memory and not first hand account, but i think that is mostly what happened.

Machines staff are a sly bunch, it seems. just make sure when you get your computer, check the specs to make sure it tallys with the promotion... etc. very 'mah fan' if kena con like my friend shakehead.gif

Well, I'll get from Machines. Coz I have Maybank Card that contains Treatpoints. I can change RM50 voucher with every 8000 points. So... that's the only plus side. And they have bigger outlets. Other than that.... that's pretty much it.

I'll be planning to buy a new macbook aluminum soon. Since the price is pretty much standardized for all mac stores, is there any added advantage from buying from mac city, machines, or any of the other mac stores?

Tx.

I bought a macbook from Mac City in Dec 2008 when they having the free upgrade to 4 GB RAM promotion. The guy said come back 1st week Jan to upgrade the RAM.

Until now the shop say no RAM coming!! I'm so upset!! I call them every week and it's the same answer - they don't know when it's coming, supplier fault, etc...

Is this a scam? cry.gif

What can I do to get my 4 GB RAM as per the promotion? Any avenues?

i think we have to know what we are buying before proceeding with the purchase, cmon all advertising are meant to give you half truth and half exaggeration. If you know apple products you should know that all their machines except for the entry level come with matched memory configuration. So the macbook come with 1x1GB,and machines said 2GB additional Ram right? that means they gave you a single piece of 2Gb replacing 1Gb inside the macbook, unless the machine miraculously had 3 slots that you can put the extra piece of 1GB in but thats not the case, next time ask the sales person properly, just relying on advertisement will not end up sop good. Even every time i see kfc ads the chicken and the burger look so good and huge but thats not the case in KFC outlets i cant say KFC is deceitful can i?

lol who wanna buy 1x1Gb even the stock MB comes with 1x1Gb,pretty useless unless u wanna use it for paper weight. THe resellers should specify whether its additional ram or ram upgrade which requires a trade in of stock ram, customers should ask the salesperson properly or not buyer remorse will happen.

yup, 2GB --> 3GB is free for 2.4GHz

3GB --> 4GB add RM299.

Get 2 sticks of 2GB Apacer RAM.

Don't get back the original 2x 1GB Samsung (?) RAM.

for machines, we only carry KTA for our promo...
if you prefer a CTO (customised via the Apple Online store) then you'd receive the Hynix or Samsung chips.
Hynix & Samsung do not sell these chips at retail level, only at the OEM level, meaning you'd need to order in the thousands quantity to get them smile.gif

Thanks for the clarification biggrin.gif

So, which RAM is better for the stability on the performance? Samsung/Hynix or the KTA?

If i would order via Apple Online Store most probably i'll get Samsung/Hynix. But how come these Chips is not selling at open market? hmm.gif

Anyway think i prefer getting the Mac at Machines should be good enough ~ smile.gif

never read my reply...
Samsung & Hynix are OEM... they only want to sell in very large quantity... cos that way the entire production can be guaranteed, that there's some customer (Apple or Dell or whoever) to buy it.

for stability & performance, they're the same, Kingston manufactures the RAM to the same spec as Samsung & Hynix... difference is the warranty.
the Apple Online Store RAM is bundled with the Mac, so international warranty is one year, but only as a part of that particular Mac.
The KTA is lifetime local warranty, in any supported Mac.

the iMac is my personal Mac, nothing important is running there. So even if it crashes, I don't lose anything.
That kind if risk is not acceptable when we sell RAM to customers, so we only carry KTA.

Basically, I'm willing to take the risk of data loss, on my personal iMac, but definitely not when recommending RAM to customers smile.gif

er, the iMac is not important at all... so I'm willing to take the risk.

as a company, machines cannot run a business like that.

anyway, what I do with my personal mac is not a reflection of machines corporate policy. so I'm not sure what you mean by practiced what I preach.

On one hand you claim your personal iMac isn't important, thus justifying the use of KVR. On the other, you're harping on about the benefits of KTA (which I can attest to, I'm running some in my white MB). I know they are two mutually exclusive statements which are in-line with both Machines' corporate policy and your personal preference(s).

But think of it carefully this way - if KVR is good enough for you, yet at the same time you want to boost Machines' image by extolling the virtues of KTA, which would I choose to pay attention to? Don't actions speak louder than words?

i hope u all wont mind me asking this question tho...

wuts the big deal of ram types in a notebook? i used to take into account what ram chip im buying (d43, tccd, bh5, those stuff) when i was into overclocking my desktop. but now that im running a notebook, i dun see the need for performance rams (not going to overclock a notebook) tongue.gif. from my exp, CL times is too small to justify any price difference, but i could be wrong.

hope someone would enlighten me on the subject smile.gif thank you

what I do with my iMac ... is very different from what all of you do with your Mac. its also similar to how a mechanic may use imitation parts in his car, knowing the weaknessess and knowing how to recover from them & not doing the same for his paying customers

basically, I am not your typical Mac user. My usage of my iMac is also not typical. I won't go into detail here, but lets just say the main benefit of using KTA is not applicable to me.

and you pointed out something very important

CL times makes a difference, thats why im using the mushkin EB series hehe. But well the KTAs have a proven track record and is quite similar with the Hynix and samsung module used by apple,if a reseller is using that, why not buy from them?

i see where you're coming from, but i dont think you follow what xaw5126 is trying to say. let me give you a hypothetical scenario. his iMac is used to breed/catch virus on the imac for his personal enjoyment. putting in more stable ram does nothing and it is irrelevant. thus KVR is good enough for that purpose. so even in the unlikely event that it crashes, it doesn't matter.

btw what the hell is KVR and KTA anyway, what does it stand for.

anybody know how much 1 stick of 2gb ram from machines cost?

don't know about others im prefer machines mainly because they have a nicer and bigger store, apart from that the membership card is a great deal too. about their staff is nothing important mainly i do my homework 1st before i shop, so i'll be there just to get the stuff i want not for the sales person to entertaint me.

Most importantly, Machines able to use CC with 0% installment plan.
This to prevent spending huge lump of money that make u heart pain biggrin.gif

Machines and Mac City is basically the same...if u do your homework (here/Macrumors) then it should be alright for any shops..

The staff there should have the basic knowledge of how to operate the Mac OSX and some configuration parts...other than that, is based on individual interest on learning and promoting the Mac's to customer biggrin.gif

actually both of them are very different, machines have 7 outlets and growing they are an APR and Maccity is just a AR,the reason why Machines can give 0% installment along with no charges using CC is because they are paying for your bank charges as they realize most people are from the middle class income group and they also give our rebate points for anything you buy,Maccity charges you extra cause they cant afford to pay on your behalf. If lets say one of the machines store is out of stock of a certain item you are looking for you could ask them to reserve the item in on of their other stores. I cant think of any other store that thinks of your wallet first

Well, if you look at the machines website.....basically they only offer on what they are written in the webpage...can't bargain more stuffs...the 4 gb ram can only be free upgraded if u buy the ACPP..and about the sleeve and etc..probably NO is the answer as they didn't write any other freebies in the website...that is why when u buy apple computer, always go for the best promotion and freebies...about the people whether they are friendly or not, it is very subjective...some say mac city better some say machines better..

yeah, normally they change their promotion strategies every month.. nod.gif

its 1point = RM1 ,If you are new to mac you can also join their workshops for free, they think of educating you also machines offers almost what an apple store offers,a community gathering place to exchange ideas.

The way i look at it, the rebate dont work like that
Ipods get 10% rebate, mac get 2% rebate, etc...

even when i bought my appletv, there was no rebate watsoever although it cost RM1449.

Cheers

any recommendations of what brands i should buy? the apple wall charger is quite pricy...i heard there's belkin and griffin brands which pricing are more affordable?
and where can i buy it too? is it also sold in apple stores?

That will make my day cheerful, who know buyers might swipe their Credit Card with excellent services biggrin.gif

Hi guys,

If i have a better deal from outsider.

WHere should i sent the mac products to repair? I heard that any apple reseller shop (eg.machines, epic center) would be glad to handle the repair?

Does it included if i never deal any business with these apple reseller shop before?

Normally if i buy from shop, is there a 1 to 1 exchange policy? How long with such service available?

Thanx..

This is more to a self preference, some people like it and some people don't. This is up to the salesperson to judge if the customer is comfortable with him following around or not. smile.gif

Some don't just care. I walked in, all the staff there were talking with one another. They looked at me like I'm only looking at stuff and not buying. This is what I hate.

Second, when I asked them the price for Griffin SmartTalk, they say "50 SOMETHING" blink.gif .

1. The mic adapter is not "50 SOMETHING". If they have stock that day I'll grab it.
2. Why can't they tell me the exact figure mad.gif .

I kept telling them "ARE YOU SURE!!!?" They still think they are right until I've asked a senior. The senior said 90 something which I can't remember.

Really bad service.

Sometimes we also need further explanation over what we read from the internet plus a live demo with good explanation will help the buyer a lot. Like those sales person at Digital Mall, good explanation which made me end up buying 500G external hard disk even though originally I was planning to buy the 200G.

Anyway, been to Machines at 1U almost every alternate week, like their bargain/clearance section. Hope they make it permanent by putting old stock from time to time for people like me who still using old version of apple gadgets. biggrin.gif Of course also dropped by Maccity since both are in the same building. icon_rolleyes.gif

- For your information this RAM is customized for MacBook and certify for MacBook by Apple.(as u can see on the sticker) Normal notebook/PC RAM is totally different from normal RAM. By the RAM on the picture is DDR3 and not DDR2.

machines uses KTA... guaranteed to never ever cause problems...

wonder why Epi & MacCity are using cheaper RAM smile.gif

My company only use corsair ram to upgrade any mb, mbp, imac and mac mini. I did try out apacer ram before and it is not that up to my expectation. Kingston failed on me twice. So far, corsair no problem and the performance is satisfying. rclxms.gif

As far as I know, Apple reseller always wait for Apple Malaysia to announce the promotion. If Apple Malaysia didn't issue any promotion, the reseller might just run their own promotion.

Issit worthy to having surcharge fee with a 2GB RAM for the exchange condition of without any freebies? normal freebies such as bagpack, sleeve, keyboard protector.

Btw, Machine or Epic is having the attractive member discount on purchasing apple accessories?

I felt Epic got more choices in accessories but the price a little steep. I bet most KL apple reseller stores sharing the same price?

Since they are "apple" store.

Many ppl mentioned some employee only work for money not for interest where the passionate ones might left the company~

But surely there will be good ones around to hunt and help out the customer for enquiries~

Regarding the RAM, i would say Machines/Mac City/Epi have certified Apple requirement~

firstly this is only applicable if you have a machines membership card, and its not 10% Off,you pay the full amount and get 10% Rebate which is applicable for a secondary purchase. If you are wondering how to get a membership card, buying a minimum of an ipod shuffle would do.

yeah 10% off with membership card. Just Epic center having different discount rate for certain products. Besides promoter said certain items are not under 5% discount, since their profit margin is pretty low.

(5% rebate from Epic center anyway.)

Just want to comfirm Machines whether apply the same discount rate of 10% to every products in the store first.

Can i buy the wacom tablet instantly during the same period of having the membership card with 10% rebate?

p/s : terence, the waiting game is gonna end lar. I won't go Mid Valley anyway. Always traffic jam there.

my personal experience, is i just leave my protector on the keyboard for 24-7. there'll be some kind of stain/dust on the screen. but u can wipe it wit ur cloth. perfectly fine till now. my screen is protected. so does my keyboard.

Well to me, I would choose to go to a store and get it as I will be able to inspect the device. Well you might want to use the rebate to get a protective skin or something. smile.gif

U can try epic center... I got a few of freebies which was not stated in the official site.

I even got a free upgrade to 2GB RAM.. of cuz along with the CC surcharge. But it worth the price.

I feel Machines are very strict. When they means no freebies, they really means it.

depends, sometimes can be as high as 5% not worth it IMHO paying for your own gift. I prefewr a reseller that cares about my wallet at the end of the day the freebies can be cheapo things and they earn from surcharge ish

That is ridiculous. I can't believe a premium reseller being allowed to con people that way (CC Surcharge). Even if it is at 2%, a macbook is (RM4799*0.02) RM96 which IMHO is bull.

I'm not promoting machines but they offer 2% rebate (membership rebate) without paying any cc surcharge (And also interest free monthly installments).

like what nimrod say, many resellers out there are also willing to sell below RRP (Up to 10-20% for ipod, not so sure about macbooks) to meet their quota. Its easy to assume that will usually happen towards the end of the year i guess.

it is 2.5% at Epic Center... Pavillion, Bkt Bintang.

I do the maths already. THe 2GB RAM itself plus freebies is more expensive than the surcharge.

So, it is a good deal.

Machine won't give me anything. But 2% for next Mac products.

Well, no matter how better than u purchase online..

Machines have a lot of branches around the KL. and Now JB too.

May I know for the 4GB ram upgrade, are they

1. swapping the 2GB RAM to 4GB RAM,

or

2. we pay RM488 for another 4GB RAM, then we keep the 2GB RAM?

paying RM488 for upgrading to 4GB ram, as in "swap"

-FYI , the promotion only in Johor Bahru for Mac Discovery Week not in KL outlet-

Ermmm , sorry , may be I have misunderstood .
In DiscoveryWeek website , it states that Buy a Macbook or Macbook Pro will get Ipod Nano ( 3rd Gen ) and bra bra bra . So , I thought the word " Macbook " already includes Macbook white and Macbook Alu . While in Machines website , Ipod Nano ( 3rd Gen ) is not free for Macbook White .

I think only will be "suspected" to get tax-charge when you coming out from SG to Msia.

By the way, the box is nothing fancy. You just leave it at someone's house safety.

Use the Sleeve to carry the machine.
