It works as player. You need external hard drive to send your movie to the player.

Just ordered from Amazon at $115.99 free shipping to Vpost.

But no stock ATM, so have to wait from Amazon to restock.

The previous pricing of USD 122 is from another seller BTW and they have stock.

WD TV is selling like hot cake in US now due to overwhelming response. Malaysia probably won't get it this year in normal distribution channel. For those can't wait, need to order from US. (info from WD Malaysia internal business briefing)

This is definitely poor man blu-ray player (don't have all the bell and whistle like pop corn hour), need to wait way pass Christmas before have staff purchase.

Theatrical films, even those shot digitally, are shot at 24fps. Digital movies that are not meant for cinemas, like concerts/TV series, mostly shot at 60fps.

I would buy it 1st. Enjoy it while waiting for new ver to pops out. Somehow, we need to keep the economy running tongue.gif (just joking).

Once they include LAN, I guess it would be an additional RM150 or more. Maybe they ll include an internal HDD too (more expensive)

You can ask corez, he's the first person in this forum as far as i can see who ordered it from Amazon US 3 days ago. He'll be able to answer your question as soon as he got it.

2.5" should be ok... WD passport same as other portable HDD too, just need a single USB to power. If not enough, they have the 2nd usb connector for you to power up the 2.5" HDD too...
3.5" for sure need external power...

i'm eyeing on hd media player (for h264 playback) long time ago already namely sarotech & dvico brands; unfortunately they are unaffordable to me... with this hd player @ rm400++ (minus all bell-and-whistle that are not so crucial to me), the price is unbeatable thumbup.gif

Man...should have got myself a Full HD plasma sad.gif

Anyway...I read through the Madhat review....what does the guy mean by:

"Next, I tried a 1080p x264 file, also in an MKV container, this time with DTS audio. The video bitrate was around 15mbps, and I honestly expected many dropped frames. However, I was proven wrong, as the file played back with no issues at all.

Then he said

I tried playing an MKV file containing MPEG2 video and AC3 audio, and it did not play. While that’s not a traditional container for those codecs, it still should have played."

Can someone enlighten me...AI'm still new to this HD stuff..

Probably it can only handle x264 codec in mkv files instead of others..so far from what I see the in forum, some people been complaining that it couldn't play certain anime encodes, considering that fansubs don't have specific standards for video encodes unlike scene groups..

IINM, the player allows u to use either composite or hdmi video output. composite (yellow, red, white) for non-HD tv and HDMI for HD tvs.

i checked some screens in the youtube to have a look at the menu system.. but no idea if it handles folders well or not. the movie files all appear as big thumbpreview icons unsure.gif

IMO, WDTV is reasonable priced. HDX1000 has other feature like networking, can add internal HDD etc...that is why HDX is more expensive.

Got it from IT One 1U

I'll be comparing this against my current setup ,Dvico 3100 (PATA) and Pinnacle ShowCentre

Low Points sad.gif
- No volume control. Must control from TV
- No menu to transfer files from USB1 to USB2. I was thinking of using a thumbdrive to ferry newly downloaded shows. But now I need to unplug my MyBook and bring to my PC
- No Goto function. You cant tell it to go to a time index. Need to FF/FR. But there is resume function
- Powering off the WD TV wont power off my MyBook. I do hear MyBook spinning down but the light in front still glows. On a pc, when u eject it it will power off. Guess I need to wait a bit longer on my next test.
- It only show 7 lines of text during file browsing. Wish WD would make better use of screen realestate
- No button on the unit except for reset (i think). Lost the remote and you're in hot soup

High Points thumbup.gif
- Video : Tested xvid, divx5, divx6, mp4, vob, m2ts-h264 and iso. I dont have mkv and I am lazy to rip VC1 Bluray
- Audio : Tested mp3, aac
- Resume function worked for all file format. Not sure what if there is a limit on the number of files it can resume
- Playback is almost instantaneous for all file format

GUI Review
The GUI is nicely done and responsive. By default, upon power on it will highlight Photos. Media files are grouped by 'All', Folder, Date and Recently played. Menu available during playback are Audio Selection, Subtitles, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Screen Position, Repeat and File Info.

as for the non-mosaic question...of course there is....the mosaics are applied after filming, isnt it? so the source of course is mosaic-free

I received my unit from ZhenWei just now.. and just did a simple checkout and test run on the unit. These are my initial findings:

I copied the entire DVD Casino Royale (TS_VIDEO Folder) into my external HDD and playback it.. connected the unit to my ONKYO TX-SR505 via optical cable. The video is playback on 1080p on my 40" LCD without any flaw throughtout the entire 2 hours playback thumbup.gif with Dolby Digital 5.1 track being decoded nicely! rclxms.gif

How come you connect via optical? HDMI does not work?

And playback is 1080p for dvd? Is it upscaling?

I received my unit from ZhenWei just now.. and just did a simple checkout and test run on the unit. These are my initial findings:

I copied the entire DVD Casino Royale (TS_VIDEO Folder) into my external HDD and playback it.. connected the unit to my ONKYO TX-SR505 via optical cable. The video is playback on 1080p on my 40" LCD without any flaw throughtout the entire 2 hours playback  thumbup.gif with Dolby Digital 5.1 track being decoded nicely! rclxms.gif

I also got my unit from zhenwei yesterday night.

Tried the unit immediately after reaching home. I just love the interface...looks like PS3 interface.

Tested, some mkv files. It seems like there are some files I played without sound. There's a message show at the begining "Audio Digital". Does this mean that I have to plug in optical to listen?

The playback is excellent without any jerk or lag.

1 drawback I realise is when I switched off wd tv, it does not automatically switch off the hdd. I need to manual switch it off.

So far, i just love it.....the cheapest HD player.

Yes i use HDMI for both video and audio.
Some mkv files run with no prob, but some without sound and the msg shows "Audio: Digital 1".
I suspect that I need to connect optical for audio for these file types. Correct me if i am wrong.

I am using WD my book 500GB external hdd.

You never reply if you using amp for sound or tv/monitor. I'm guessing no amp, otherwise dts can be decoded.

I am using Panasonic home theater. So i plug my hdmi from wd tv to my plasma. and then output sound using rca to my home theater system.

There is an optical out in wd tv and optical in in my home theatre. So i can use optical cable if i want to.

But I dunno whether it will solve the problem or not.

I am hooking the WD HD Player direct to my Sony 40" LCD TV via HDMI for video playback (on 1080p 60hz resolutions), and used SPDIF optical connect to my OnkyoTX-SR505 for audio decoding, Dolby Digital 5.1 track is being decoded well. Will try on DD-EX & DTS-ES movie track tonite if time permitted.

Ya, one more thing, the unit do support DVD file Subtitle change, audio track change, but cannot search/skip chapters.

If you can connect your HDMI to your AV Receiver, why bother to use optical? HDMI interface should able to act as Audio transport to your AV receiver to decode the necessary audiotrack playback.
In my case, my Onkyo TX-SR505 do not have HDMI interface, that's why I have to connect the SPDIF to my AV Receiver via optical for audio and HDMI interface to my Sony LCD TV via HDMI.

Yes, some forumner managed to rip the whole bd (50gigs) and burn it onto a dual layer BD.

That pirated bd can be played on PS3 some more.

The only problem is that blank 2 layer bd cost like 80+. Better buy ori.

However, just wait for the blank BD to drop down, then we shall be flodded with pirated BDs

Just now while browsing around the electrical section in TESCO in Butterworth, I saw that they are selling a Media Player by the brand of AVF. It was about the size of 4" x 3", white in colour and able to play the usual gamut of video codec including real video (RMVB). I couldn't see any mkv logo there on the box and I presume it cannot support mkv. I also didn't see any HDMI connection.

The display set was hooked up to a small LCD TV or monitor via a VGA cable and was playing some movie from a thumb drive through an USB port. The sound output was via RCA cable to 2.1 sonic gear system. The picture and sound are acceptable; not that great maybe because of the ordinary video file contained in the thumb drive.

It is retailing only at RM269 a set.

Played around with the new WD media player just now.

Performance depends a lot on the type of USB hardware. Didn't do well with my 2.5" and 3.5" HDD enclosures, video freeze, etc.

Worked well with my Transcend usb drive. 720p mkv was beautiful on big screen.

Wonder if it's to do with data read/transfer speed. The WD Mybook or passport is faster too?

I was talking about HD audio in MKV files, I can't seem to find any. If you remux and re-encode the audio tracks to DTS-HD MA/Dolby TrueHD, it's still not lossless to the original BD, only lossless to the MKV.

Direct rip from BD, that's another story.

I still have issues playing some mkv files. Some files still don't have sound at all.

My connection is as follows:

HDMI from WD tv to Plasma. Plasma audio out via rca cable to home theatre.

Is the connection considered not digital?

Does some mkv files required digital audio in order to have sound?

Looking at the pdf file, did you set the audio as DIGITAL or STEREO?

Also, if the sound is DTS, you need an amp/receiver to decode. Your plasma can only have sound for other than DTS now.

What home theater you referring to? Why not hdmi WDTV to hometheater to plasma (instead of WDTV to plasma to hometheater)?

Irregardless if those files are MKV or VOB etc.. as long as those audio tracks are in Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital EX or DTS or DTS-ES or Dolby TruHD ot DTS-HD etc... all required AV Decoder to decode those tracks. If you are connecting direct to Plasma / LCD via HDMI, chances are only the stereo (2.0) channel track will be able to recognise and playback from the Plasma / LCD TV. Your audio connection from Plasma/LCD to AV Receiver will be purely analogue 2.0, unless u r using the AV Receiver's DSP to recreate the "artificial" 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 environment.

Good luck on your test!

I am using Panasonic home theatre, with DVD upscaling player and 5.1 speakers.

I cannot connect from wd tv to home theatre, because no hdmi-in in home theatre.

I set the audio in wd tv as stereo. If i set it to digital then all fiels will have no sound.
I read the pdf manual, if you connect via hdmi, it is considered digital.

Maybe the audio out to home theatre is not digital.

I will get an optical cable to try.

Bro, do check if your Panasonic HT system come with any AUX input (in optical) which can detect and decode DTS and DD5.1 tracks. Use that to link to your WD HD Media player (to be configured as Digital output) for any audio playback via optical cable. As for video, hook on a HDMI cable from your WD HD Media player directly to your Plasma (Make sure u select the right screen size and signal -> 1080i/p?)

Good luck on your test!

I think the difference is not the enclosure, but the type of HDD inside. Enclosure may provide steady voltage and cooling only.

The HDD has to have proper buffer and rpm. Maybe partition will help too.

Guys, discussing MKV files or any type of media in general is fine. But is it ok to mention about downloading certain copyrighted titles? And giving links is even more inapropriate. Can discuss this privately via PM. icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi. I got my wd tv 3 days ago.

I got 2 questions:

1. How do I put movie posters on the mkv movie file?
I can put the music album cover using itunes and it is embedded in the file. How does it work for movie files?

2. How do I put subtitle in the movie
I played the same file in my pc and I can see subtitle. But when I played in wd tv, there's no subtitle, even I choose to have it, it's not there anymore.

Pls advise, sifus.

Now, something that I want to share. This HD media player cannot recognise chapters for DVD VOB file. The player also do not have any time search feature to jump into any scene. Say for a 2 hours movie clip, if we need to goto time 1hour 35 minutes.. we have to FF (up to 16x speed ) all the way till then! doh.gif

Very true. That's one of the drawbacks.

How about subtitles? do you have issues on subtitles? All my mkv movies does not show subtitles.

Have you tried 720p mkv files?
Is the subtitle a separate file of embedded inside the mkv file?

It depends whether the source is embedded with subtitle or not
If not u have to look for the so-called 3rd party subtitle like srt type

The website said the player supports the srt type subtitle
Anyhow I will try it out tonight smile.gif

No matter if the the subtitle already embedded in MKV, it'll not display it. You have to extract it using MKVExtract tool. Hope this will help.

Tested it just now. Work flawlessly for MKV files. I am using HDMI for connection. HDD is WD.

Will test other files as well tomorrow. Darn tired now.

tested just now
most of my mkv files were played flawlessly
except few files with different flaws

anyway, i was using the composite cable to test
tomorrow gonna get a HDMI cable to test again
to see whether the flaws can be resolved

about the subtitle
yes, all the english subtitles can be shown
but not the chinese subtitle
not even a single word was shown

the subtitles are the srt type
the so called 3rd party subtitle
not the embedded one
I tested one mkv movie with embedded subtitle
it shows nothing
I think like metalgrindsolid bro mentioned
need to extract the subtitle out

when i opened some of my mkv files
it shows that the audio track type is not supported, no sound
maybe not all the digital audio track types are supported?

Played around with the new WD media player just now.

Performance depends a lot on the type of USB hardware. Didn't do well with my 2.5" and 3.5" HDD enclosures, video freeze, etc.

Worked well with my Transcend usb drive. 720p mkv was beautiful on big screen.

Wonder if it's to do with data read/transfer speed. The WD Mybook or passport is faster too?

Yup, this can never replace the TViX. But it's good enough for it's price. Me also thought of buying, but had to pass after I read the specs.

I think tarak. Whatever in the mkv, it will just output it. In my AVR, certain clips has DD (oftenly) and some DTS. Only one audio option. Should I say, no option.

I dont mind to send to you to test. Bundle with ext HDD inside. U tau apa mau butalah tongue.gif The other HDD will go to BBA wink.gif

Just got my device purchased from Zhen Wei (nice seller, by the way) which arrived last Friday. Tested today with some avi file embedded with chinese subtitle, no problem.
mkv file just tested some sample, no problem. Regarding the chinese subtitle issue, google some chinese website, and they said need to extract it out if it is embedded. And convert it to UTF-8 coding. Same to 3rd party subtitle, need to convert it to UTF-8, else it cant play. Dun hv any mkv movie with subtitle or 3rd party subtitle on hand, anyone can try it out?

Ok, latest findings.

1080p mkv cannot play well, most of the time. This is not problem for wdtv only, seems its limitation for sigma chips. Something to do with the profile or 5 ReFrames.

It seems like this WD can't decode some audio formats internally (presumably DTS & Dolby), you'll need to have an AV receiver to do the decoding. So those connecting directly to the TV might not get the audio. hmm.gif

after couple of days exploring my wd tv...here's my findings:

1. Embedded subtitle cannot show
2. some mkv files does not have sound
3. no chapter searching - only have fast fwd
4. When you turn off wd tv, it does not automatically shut down your hdd
5. some .mov files does not play

I really hope wd will come out new firmware to counter this problems.

Last nite I ZAP the entire "I am Legend" Dual later DVD into external HDD (Western Digital 640GB SATA).. and playback for test. The entire show (nearly 2 hrs) was running flawlessly on 1080p.

but I do agree.. sometimes when HDD is on constant loading (you can see when the LED is blinking constantly) on a higher pace, the playback sound quality and video will be distorted.

DVD native resolution is 480p. I think his TV screen/upscaling is 1080p which don't have anything to do with the WD player, so of course it will play flawlessly.

He need to test it on a real 1080p native video to get the WD's real performance result.

For no sound problem, it's already mentioned before.

DTS can only be heard via AVR/amp with dts decoder or using optical cable.

It's something to do with licensing if DTS is to be downmixed to DD.

For those who have problem with MKV 1080p playback maybe this will help:

Use this formula: Width x Height x ReFrames = 8,388,608 or less should play fine.
You can use MediaInfo to get your ReFrames, Width and Height value.

For example:

voa-presto_x264_1080p.mkv (Short movie from Pixar)
Bitrate: 8,291 Kbps
Nominal Bitrate : 8,667 Kbps
Width: 1920 x Height: 1080 x ReFrames: 5 Frames = 10,368,000
Result: playback macroblocking/pixelating and stuttering

WALL_E 1080p
Bitrate: 9,671 Kbps
Nominal Bitrate: 10.2 Mbps
Width: 1920 x Height: 800 x ReFrames: 4 Frames = 6,144,000
Result: Playback smoothly

Here are the result I got from the net (not mine):

Batman 1920 x 1080 x 5 ReFrames = 10,368,000 (Chokes)
Bitrate = 10.3Mbps
Audio = AC3 5.1 @ 640Kbps
File Size = 10.9 Gigs

Casino Royal 1920 x 800 x 11 ReFrames = 16,896,000 (Chokes)
Bitrate = 10.5Mbps
Audio = DTS 5.1 @ 1,536Kbps
File Size = 10.6Gigs

Batman #2 1920 x 800 x 5 ReFrames = 7,688,000 (Plays Smoothly)
Bitrate = 13.2Mbps
Audio = AC3 5.1 @ 640Kbps
File Size = 9.43Gigs

Incredible Hulk 1920 x 816 x 5 ReFrames = 7,833,600 (Plays Smoothly)
Bitrate = 10.1Mbps
Audio = DTS 5.1 @ 1,536Kbps
File Size = 7.95Gigs

Hope This will help smile.gif . I'll post more result if I got more time test the rest my 1080p collection.

For no sound problem, it's already mentioned before.

DTS can only be heard via AVR/amp with dts decoder or using optical cable.

It's something to do with licensing if DTS is to be downmixed to DD.

Bro, i am connecting via optical to my HT. still no sound.

I'm assuming either your HT cannot decode DTS or you didn't set audio settings to digital.

Technically not. The Scene Release removed/cropped the top and bottom black bar. But the width they don't touch.

use mkvextract(available with mkvtoolnix), add the video and just extract the sub
you might want to convert it to .srt if it's in .ass format using subtitle workshop

1080p refers to vertical pixel count of 1.78:1 aspect ratio (16x9, same as your widescreen TV).

Because most movies were shot at wider screen with 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the vertical resolution will be smaller. Some movies were shot at 1.85:1 will be stretched to 1.78:1 (negligible effect to the picture) during rip process, so the vertical resolution will be 1080p.

The best way to know the actual resolution is to look at horizontal size. If it's 1920 then it's 1080p, regardless of the vertical size. Same with 720p which will always have 1280 pixels horizontally. So if the video size is 1920x800, it is 1080p at 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

Yes but a bit messy. you have to make sure the frame rate should be same or otherwise out of sync.

btw...use this will solve the problem.. :clap

simply just save the sub in .srt format(there are multiple format of subs available when saving it, pick the right one), that's all to it

Any idea where can I download .srt subtitle?

I tried to extract the subtitle from the mkv, it seems like it's not there.

I guess I have to download separately. But will it sync correctly?

Yamaha RX-V663 for around RM1.9k.
Onkyo TX-SR606 for less than RM3k.

Or for HTiBs, the Sony HT-SF2300 for RM1999, and few others, don't know much about the models, maybe can refer tot he HTiB thread.

No need HDMI to listen to DTS, just get any DTS amp with optical input, cost maybe less than RM1k.

Ooops, yeah, you're right. I was misleaded when he mentioned HDMI. Any receiver with optical input and legacy DTS decoding will do. nod.gif

You'll only need an HDMI receiver if there's a need to decode HD audio.

thanks for the susgestions, the WDTV is not capable to produce HD-Audio? issit hardware or firmware limitations? I thought others NMT like HDX and PCH uses the same sigma chipset?

I was thinking of getting HDMI receiver for future proof aswell

First U need to identify ur optical input on ur AVR is set for what device (DVD, CableTV, etc....)
After u connect ur optical cable, switch the playing mode on ur AVR to the mode that ur optical input is set for (DVD, CableTV, etc...)
That should solve ur problem smile.gif

Btw, I still need to prove one more thing
I'm not sure whether connecting the optical cable alone without RCA cables will still give u sound
coz my testing last night was done together with RCA cables
will try again tonite

I smell a fish also! Why do you say it is RM360?

I was there first thing morning. The printed poster says WDTV is rm360, then they stick a star with the price RM399 on it. Maybe for PC Fair price it is rm360, then normal price is RM399. Now what? Should I buy at RM399? I got a feeling that the retail price will be at rm399 doh.gif

That's correct. It can also play AVI-HD and WMV-HD directly. For MKVs can stream using Tversity. In fact, with wired/wireless connection with PS3 is one advantage over the WDTV. If you don't wanna stream, can always remux the MKV.

Another reason for me to not sell my PS3. hmm.gif

now im deciding whether to buy together with the 400gb passport or not? i bought a 1T Maxtor already but its a 3.5in
the situation is my pc is downstairs, the wd tv will be in my room upstairs. leceh to bring the heavy maxtor up and down with the wires attached. if passport much easier but 400gb is not much for the price.
decisions decisions..... icon_question.gif

current in market eee box only RM999 and i am eyeing a thing that with super low power consumption (around 20W average) on 24/7 todo downloading and could play the HD stuffs directly..

was considering these N270 atom equipped.. but realized it's just too weak to play H.264 720P MKV properly (reports and user feedback say it's at 90+% processor utilization when doing so....) .. so back to square one..

ok after a few tries. it stayed as HDMI finally. I think i was too slow in pressing the OK button. the manual says I have 15 seconds.

when i first plug it in, i use HDMI and i wasnt getting any signal at all. after reading the manual, found that it is default to Composite, so I need to hook up a Composite cable to see anything. Then from Composite, I set it to HDMI and I need to quickly press my TV's remote to switch to HDMI in, by the time I do that, its probably too late for me to press OK. Its just stupid that a 15 seconds time frame is given. I wish it is auto detect everything. Just like the stupid PS3, everytime a different thing is plug in, you need to go thru the setting again.

The Menu is just a tad slow for me. I wish it is faster

Now I need to find some HD material.... rclxms.gif
My Russian Institute seems to be able to play fine....kekekeke... sweat.gif

From day one, I hooked it up using HDMI cable. No problem at all. The other outputs are still 'virgin' sweat.gif Yeah, the menu is rather slow in response. I set my WDTV to output at 720p rez.

When you switch on the WDTV and the external hdd, you need to wait for a while for it to scan the whole hdd.

If your .mkv file uses DTS sound, then you will experience no sound, unless your AVR got DTS decoding.

The thing is when i plug in my WD My book, the USB symbol in front of the WDTV doesnt light up at all, no matter how i unplug the USB cable, off the HD also the same, but when i plug in USB thumbdrive, it will be ok and i can see the HD scanning status on the menu...is it bcoz my WD My book is formatted in NTFS??

ic, so i need to set to digital, stereo is for RCA connection then. i think even for AC3 sound, i experience no sound also..

One more thing..i using the HDMI cable that connect to my PS3, when connect to my WDTV, my LCD TV said "Mode not Supported", but when i plug another HDMI cable from my DVD player, it is ok...strange..

Switch off your Media library feature in WDTV.

I assume your Mybook works when connecting to pc? If so, USb connection is working ok.

Nothing to do with FAT/NTFS. So far, you are only person whose harddisk cannot work. Even usb hub also works.

er... i tot this WD has no internal audio decoding for both DD n DTS?
u practically need an amp with optical or hdmi input to fully play most current mkvs

after google around, i also suspect is the Media Library feature causing my problem, will try again tonite.

Yes, when connect to PC work.

Also quite disappointed that u need an AVR in order to hear DTS and DD, as i don hv an AVR, which mean most of my mkv movies play with no sound. since i bought this unit for my bro and he has an AVR, so not an issue for me, but if u wan to move around this unit, then u will hv problem play mkv with sound (DTS & DD).

Yeah, everyone should take this into consideration before buying. If you own an AV receiver or plan to buy one, you're good to go. If not, you won't hear the audio for those MKVs with DTS (or Dolby Digital too?) when connect the audio directly to the TV. Looks like it doesn't have internal decoding for those audio codec.

If no amp, then just switch to stereo.

stereo is only for RCA connection lah.

There is a solution to this which i read from other forum, i.e. convert those DTS movie to m2ts format, or use Popcorn MKV audio convert.

the new coming eee box 204/206 is integrated with ATI Radeon HD 3400 and according to ATI website
http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd3400/specs.html
the graphics card is quite capable in HD playback

XP Home + Atom 1.6GHz + Remote Control + 160G HDD + 1G DDR2 + WIFI-n + Giga LAN + HDMI port + Radeon HD 3400 + builtin UPS + average 20W consumption (less than a standing fan?)
all for about RM 1000 or plus.. kinda a value pack isnt it?

yeah if graphics card can take the H264 decoding load.. (not sure..) then this could be a good thing..
at 1k that quite reasonable for a "play all" media box..

yes, it can play m2ts, but not ts. which mean u can solve any mkv file with DTS sound on u LCD TV without receiver. But remember to set sound output at Stereo.

i have two complains so far with this WDTV

1. FF and FR is cacat wan. the max is 16x for FF which I find it a bit slow. How to go forward to a certain chapters like this? Takes forever!

2. My WD Passport does not turn off even after I put the WDTV on standby. Only way is to turn it off at the plug point but my plug point got no switch. Yes the HDD is still turning, can feel it. Another alternative is to Eject it, then it stops turning but the LED is still on. But the next time you On back the WDTV, it wont detect your drive unless you unplug and plug it back in. So mar farn likes this.... rolleyes.gif

My connection also went back to Composite today. Ive learned that you must not plug in both composite and HDMI at the same time as its suppose to auto-detect your cable and set accordingly. I tried once more, unplug my composite, HDMI in and do a reset with the little button. Sure enough it detected it and set to HDMI accordingly. Lets see if the setting disappears again next time I turn it on.

u playing 720p or 1080p mkv?

piece of advise when update fw, use flash drive instead of HDD, as reported by some saying that using HDD might take very long, close to 30min! flash drive is about 5min....

cant wait to go home to try it..

Glad to hear this firmware updates. Hopefully one day it can play RMVB files and this is perfect.

But I still have not get my RM360 WD TV from Thundermatch.... Called them earlier that it will only arrive first week on Jan 09 instead of end December 08.

Really cannot wait to try out my HD collections. cry.gif

Read somewhere that it was due to the frame rate. I believe these films have frame rate of 8 and the WDTV needs to have frame rate of 4. Check out the AVS forums, there is some help there. I think you need to remux them to frame rate of 4 or something.

the firmware really fix alot of issues and make the WDTV really fun to have now, the subtitle fix really help alot now embedded subtitles can be displayed without needing to extract it, and the chapter select is really handy

but i still encounter some artifact screen on some fast motion mkv's need to get the media info of the file to further confirm

so...end of the day, is it OK to get the WDTV or save up for the DVICO?

Yeah...I know can't compare a benz with a Proton..but...given the feedbacks, I think of saving up for a DVICO after reading the comments.

just updated my HDTV
guess what? It solved the problem of my few mkv files which were played with drop frames previously!!
i don't have to go thru the hassle to do remux on those files, yeah!
Now I can watch my TDK and Hellboy 2 which is near BD quality with much pleasure rclxms.gif

generally the new firmware added much improvements to the HDTV
the control of menus is now more responsive
and it supports chinese subtitle now (non-embedded type)
eventhough u have to pre-set it first
as it won't detect automatically doh.gif

i didn't try out the dvd vob files
and others like photo slides and songs playback

it's still not perfect yet
there's still a bit of lagging when it plays large size 1080p avi files
but for the same size of mkv files, it plays very smoothly
guess it's the codec problem hmm.gif
hope next firmware update will solve this issue smile.gif

yes, it can play m2ts, but not ts. which mean u can solve any mkv file with DTS sound on u LCD TV without receiver. But remember to set sound output at Stereo.

Looking forward to new firmware this month.

Quick workaround for this (when you do not have a receiver or not optical and HDMI inputs on it) is to convert the audio the the Popcorn Hour Audioconverter. That program converts and muxes an extra stream with the AC-3 in it, so you can still use the same file on a HTPC with the full DTS stream, but also it will allow the WD to have sound through HDMI to the TV set. This convert is only about 5 minutes and should not be a dealbreaker. When you can take the time to get the files, it is also a small effort now to get them working on the WD, thanks to the new firmware. Consider it part of the hobby until there is a better solution or a new firmware.

I have no experience in ripping DVD file into MKV but I do have hundreds of VOBs that I managed to rip out from high quality DVDs stockpile, all c/w Dolby 5.1 at least and some with DTS EX too. But my problem is some (small numbers) of my ripped file (in VOB format) cannot reproduce the sound playback via DD5.1 or DTS5.1 and this WDTV also cannot recognise the chapter search, which mean I have to FF all the way to search for the scene if I'd decided to skip some part of the movie.

DTS audio problem.

Using Popcorn Hour Audioconverter and select Convert to Dolby Digital and Stereo.

Now playing all the ESiR ripped MKV.

eh, only 20hrs doesn't log in, suddenly my nickname get mentioned a lot...

I staying in Pg, guess not much chance to do TT oredi and exchange our collection. Sadly Streamyx doesn't work like Penangfon/Metrofon network, if not, we can set up a ftp server to swap files just like Penangfon/Metrofon user.

I think for flexibility and expandability, I'm stick with HTPC. WDTV is for my old folks lah, the features from WDTV is just so much users friendly for those haven't touch computer before.
