My 2 cents about battery use: Firstly, ALL USERS here on this forum report usages >12hours ie 1 whole day out, with at least 3hours AND MORE of "Screen On Time" or what we term "SOT". Typical battery life tends to be 4+hours SOT with 18+hours total use. This is a SMARTPHONE and should be enjoyed for all its wonderful features of large screen for movies/browsing/reading, powerful CPU for gaming, data connectivity for surfing etc. If you can get 1 whole day's use out of a full charge, I don't see why there is a need to complain. Charge when you are sleeping. Read the link about batteries, and you won't kill your battery from overnight charging. IF you are getting less than 3hours SOT, and/or less than 12 hours of total use, then the most likely cause is some badly behaved app or apps that won't go to sleep and keeps your CPU running high. But the real thing that has changed how I use my phone? Battery life. And this isn't even bespoke to the Note II. The Razr Maxx (HD) gets great battery life. But I wanted to post this to let people who are in the market for a new phone know that battery life really will change how you use your phone. From the moment I leave for school in the morning until the moment I go to sleep at night, I never, ever, even think about my Note II’s battery. No matter what I'm doing. Watching 20 minutes of YouTube? Don't even think about it. Using Maps with GPS turned on? Don't think about it. Streaming music during my 45 minute commute? Nope, don’t think about my battery. In the past, all of these things would have had me frantically checking my phones battery. Like OP said, it really has changed the way I use my phone. With my Nexus, I kept a dock in my office, one in my home office, and chargers plugged in the living room and bedroom as well. Playing a game on an emulator with a USB controller plugged in would drain my battery from full to shutdown in 90 minutes. Even just GPS and Pandora on my 30 minute commute would knock the battery down to 75%. With the Note 2, even with the gigantic screen, I have not yet gotten a battery warning, ever. For a week I still carried my SIM-less Nexus, figuring I could use it for music and games and "save my precious phone battery." Honestly though, even using the Note for music, games, social networking and office apps throughout the day, the battery has held up like a champ. I had a Galaxy Nexus before I switched to my Note II (both on Verizon) and I had to be so careful with my time spent using the phone. It got decent battery life with the screen off, but even at the lowest brightness, just leaving the screen on for a few texts or a brief bout on Reddit would drain significant percentages of the battery. Don't even get me started on what 5 minutes of YouTube would do to it. I felt the exact same way when I switched to the Note II. For the first few weeks, I was so giddy over the battery life, I was watching it like a hawk, mainly because I wanted to benchmark how awesome it was (and it was pretty awesome), but once I got past the honeymoon phase, it just became this thing I never thought about again. Until I read this thread, I probably hadn't actually looked at my battery meter in days. I charge it at night but I never know how low it is when I plug it in - it's certainly not low enough to be of concern. I do whatever the hell I want on this phone. An hour of YouTube, 6 hours of streaming music at work, calls, texts, Reddit, downloading, uploading, games, GPS. None of it matters. I don't have to worry about whether my WiFi/BT/GPS is on or off and potentially hurting my battery life. The thing just chugs along and never ever gets low. It just works the way I need it to work. If your Operator does not have FD support or you have it disabled, then basically your states are just connected or not connected. What this means is that every time your phone connects to data, it will have to go through all of its internal functions in order to achieve the connection and perform the data transfer. This is slow and obviously the more processing that is required, the more the hit on battery. FD tries to limit this problem by having several different states. Each state has a different level of connection throughput and power consumption. DCH - High volume data (highest power consumption) FACH - Lower volume PCH - No data but keeps connection IDLE_CCCH - Not entirely sure about this one but I think its an interim stage IDLE - Connection dropped (lowest power consumption) When in DCH state, your phone is doing the highest volume of data transfer, and obviously consuming most power out of your battery. The way FD will work is when transfer rates drop, the state drops to FACH for less power consumption and then back up immediately to DCH if required, or if this transfer state is over for the time being, (eg. you have stopped browsing) instead of going back to IDLE which would mean going through all the connection procedures next time data is required, the state drops down to PCH. This is a very low powered state, and when data is subsequently required, it can then immediately go back up to FACH or DCH with minimal effort. Going up/down between each states takes the least amount of time and battery Whether you keep FD on or not depends primarily on if your network operator supports it. If your network operator supports it, then enabling it is not necessarily the best answer, as it then depends on the combination of the following 2 things: 1. How you use your phone If you are a heavy data user then enabling FD is almost certainly the way to go. The less the phone needs to do to fire back up the connection the better. However, if you rarely use the phone for a data connection, then it may prove beneficial to you to switch it off so that the IDLE state is entered sooner. Bear in mind before you decide on if you should turn it on or off, what your data sync type options for contacts/calendar/email etc. are. If you dont browse too often, you may still be using data quite often even though you are not physically doing so through various background syncs. 2. How "intelligent" your Operator's FD actually is. This can be done via a simple test. With wifi off and FD enabled, at the dialler, type #0011#. This takes you into the ServiceMode menu. The important piece of information here is the RRC State line. Press the home button and open a browser session and go into a web site, then immidiately long press the home to get the list of tasks and select the ServiceMode app. The RRC State line should be DCH (or at least FACH) and you should see some activity in your signal indicator arrows on the status bar. Eventually you should see it drop down from DCH -> FACH -> PCH -> IDLE (sometimes you may see IDLE_CCCH). Ideally, the state should stay at PCH for a while, then eventually drop to idle. My findings are on JB, that FD isn't handled as well as it was on ICS, but this will probably be due to it still being a leak. It seems for me, it goes from DCH -> FACH, and shortly after that drops to IDLE. This is not great if your going to be using more data shortly, but ok if you are no longer browsing. Swings+roundabouts. Remember FD only applies to a data connection. It does not kick in whatsoever when you are connected to wifi. The quality of your data connection (ie. H+, H, 3G) will also have a bearing on how FD will perform. Better connectivity should give you a more efficient FD performance. Tip 1. If your wifi sleep policy is set to "keep wifi on during sleep only when plugged in" then this will mean your data will take a hit whenever your screen is off (unless plugged in of course) If you think FD is not for you because "I'm almost always connected to wifi" (ie. at home/work) then you will still need to consider what the best FD policy is for you when on this sleep policy, as obviously, your screen is off most of the day. Tip 2. If you are not connected to wifi overnight (either your not at home, or your wifi sleep policy dictates) bear in mind what your phone does overnight in terms of background data activity (ie. your data sync options and widgets such as news/weather etc). If you have minimal data activity overnight (you set your widgets to sleep for example), then it would be better to switch FD off, as less battery would be consumed to go straight back to IDLE than hang around for possibly 10 minutes or more each time in FACH.[/I] Galaxy Charging Current (GCC) LINK:The original XDA thread describing what it does (from S3 thread) LINK:The other XDA thread describing it in the Note 2 thread Get it from here: LINK:GalaxyChargingCurrent APK This is the best way of detecting incoming charge current for your Galaxy Note 2 (also works on the S3). It does not seem to work on other devices. It reads a file here /sys/class/power_supply/battery/current_avg This provides an objective method to compare charging variances, and will help to narrow down slow charging issues. Very often it is the cable, or a combination of a lousy charger with the cable. The Note needs a charger that outputs at least 1.5A (with GCC readings of 1400 and above) for good charging speeds. After extensive testing by forumers, and most notably brotan, good chargers output 1500 and above. brotan has a supply of DUAL USB, DUAL 2A output chargers that have been tested working by several forumers. He also has original cables that can carry 2A current properly. Read brotan's extensive writeup on batteries and charging - brotan If you experience slow charging (ie normal is 2+ hours, anything longer than 3 hours is slow) Posted by sai86 from an XDA post, v22/2094 QUOTE I knew something was wrong when it took my phone 6 hours to charge from 22% to fully charged on the stock kernel, so I had my carrier swap my data cable. Swapping the data cable didn't fix the random slow charging issue. If you view the battery stats under settings, your phone will indicate what kind of source it's getting its charge from. I discovered sometimes when you plug your phone in via the stock travel AC adapter, your phone detects it as a USB port. It's not the charger that is the problem, but how Sammy designed the charger port or an error during the assembly process. I found a work around to avoid the phone thinking it's being plugged into a USB port. Once I initially lineup the data cable with the charger port, very very gently push down on the data cable as you fully insert it into the charger port. If you don't do so, it's usually a hit or miss when it comes down to what the phone will detect between AC and USB mode. This is the first phone that I own that seems to have this issue. Every since I've figured out what's been happening, I've been able without fail to avoid the slow charging issue. Note: Use GCC whenever you plug in and you can determine immediately whether it is charging as AC or USB. USB will show a reading of 460 only. Re-insert your cable until it reads above 1000. Introduction to Rooting - Part 1 - Theory

Since we're actually going to discuss rooting, here is an article for you to understand why your phone is not supplied rooted out of the box:

So now let us begin.

A very very brief description of phone architecture: portions of writeup credits to antt00 for clarification

The table shows components of the architecture from bottom to top. At the lowest level you have the physical hardware, then upwards you have the firmware and the rest. The userland is where the User (you) interact with the hardware using the programs/apps you installed.

I'm writing this because you are holding a portable COMPUTER that has phone capabilities. So you should treat your device like a COMPUTER first, and a phone and/or camera second. See this:LINK:Smartphones are the PCs of the future

A "ROM" typically contains a kernel, a radio (some have several you can choose from) and the userland. Some ROMs do not contain a kernel or you can elect not to install its default kernel and use the one you currently have.
I provide a link further down this writeup to the Cyanogenmod wiki for a further explanation.

The Baseband or Radio contains settings to connect to the transmission towers, while the CSC contains settings specific to your mobile operator in the APN list (eg Maxis 3G, Maxis Streaming, Celcom 3G/2G etc)

Component	Changeable?	Description
Rest of ROM (userland)	Y	eg monx, Alliance, Phoenix (usually "ROMS" include the kernel and radio as well)
Kernel	Y	The Kernel is a low level component that handles management of the hardware. It exists in all Operating Systems like Linux, Windows, OSX etc. Android is based on Linux, and Google has been cooperating with the Linux community to merge kernel development effort. eg Abyss, Perseus, Redpill
CSC (Carrier/Country Specific Code	Y	CSC settings include the APN (Access Point Names) list for your region's telco settings. It provides some parameters for your specific telco (eg Maxis 3G, Celcom 3G, Maxis Streaming etc). Some ROMs contain multiple CSCs for more region support. You typically do not mess with this otherwise you will not be able to access the data network.
Baseband (also known as Radio)	Y	The radio handles your phone's hardware communications with the telco network. It simply allows your device to fulfill its phone function. eg DLK5, DLK7. Some apps allow you to change the network parameters used. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS unless you REALLY KNOW what you are doing!
Recovery	Y	The Recovery allows you to perform some functions like flashing mods and ROMs. It is the lowest level component that the user can interact with. eg CWM, Philztouch, TWRP LINK:What is CWM (explains about CWM, but applicable to any Custom Recovery)
Firmware begins:Bootloader	Y	This starts the phone booting process when you press the power button. It is also the location of flash counter. Triangle Away changes values here. The bootloader is UNLOCKED. However, there are no custom bootloaders yet for the Note 2.
Hardware (components)	N	Screen, Battery, the stuff you can touch

Of course someone like AdamOutler (on XDA) can mod the HARDWARE. That guy is a real guru.

You CAN mix and match components marked "Y" from different countries, kernel, ROMs etc. It's fine, although some Radio versions may give you reduced signal performance.

A note about CPU, RAM, ROM and "Storage"
Think about you sitting at a desk with drawers. You are the CPU. The RAM is like your desk space. The larger your RAM or desk space, the more stuff you can work on at a time. But then of course, the more you work on, the more "you" is needed ie multi-core CPUs. Storage is like your drawers. The larger your drawers (storage) the more stuff you can store (your mp3s, mp4s, pdfs etc).

ROM, in this case, is technically "Read Only Memory". It is like the master plate used in printing, or perhaps a DVD. You can deface, tear or crumple your printout but you can always get a fresh printout by stamping from the master plate. So the ROM is actually a master plate or clean slate you can revert to if you have problems with FCs (forced closes) or random problems with your phone. You get the clean slate by performing a Factory Reset.

In your phone, the ROM resides on an area of Storage that is accessible by the Recovery. In the early days, a ROM was a physical chip that you replaced or re-flashed with special hardware. Nowadays everything is highly integrated.

Rooting for Beginners - some general explanations and understanding

The simple, non-sexy, non-flashy, techie answer: root gives you administrator (ie God) access to your device.
Root DOES NOT change your phone in any other way. No speed-ups, no slowdowns, no other changes or magic. But it OPENS THE DOOR to magic

Think of it like the Matrix: Jailbreaking is comparable to what Morpheus could do. He could bend the rules of the system to overcome certain restrictions, but was still bound to its rules. Rooting is what Neo could do. Not only could he bend the rules, he could completely break them

Now while IOS users might consider jailbreaking their iPhone the same thing as Android users rooting their Android phones, there is a HUGE difference. In fact, you can't even compare jailbreaking to rooting, and here's why.
Android out of the box allows users to install 3rd party apps (also known as sideloading), already allows you to install themes, and even allows you to install applications directly from your SD card or internal memory of your device. Everything that IOS users hope to accomplish with jailbreaking their device is already included as basic functionality within Android.

Does Rooting Void warranty?
For Samsung phones, it's a yes and no answer. From the terms and conditions, rooting/flashing will void your warranty, but Samsung Malaysia is not strict about this. So far there have not been cases of Samsung rejecting rooted phones, but please be prudent and perform a Triangle Away counter reset and flash stock firmware before turning in your phone for warranty.

If you live in the USA, rooting (of phones only) is legal as proclaimed by the Librarian of Congress, so you shouldn't have any issues with warranty. The US legal system has not clearly defined what a "tablet" is, so you can't root tablets. We don't know the case for "phablets"

Can rooting damage your phone?
It is a one in a million chance. If you are afraid of this slim chance, don't root.
This usually happens due to PEBKAC issues. Therefore, if you are prone to PEBKAC, do not proceed. Please google PEBKAC for your OWN UNDERSTANDING AND PROTECTION.
If you do not suffer from PEBKAC, then please ensure 1 very important thing: your download is NOT corrupt. For Windows, use this tool: HashTab by implbits
Make sure that your file MD5 matches the one from the host site. If the MD5 matches, your download is clean, and you may proceed.

There may be cases where you will not have the MD5 from the host site. If that is the case, use this tool: http://www.7-zip.org/
Install it. Select default options, and then run "Test archive" from the right click menu. Passing the test will give you a good indication your download is not corrupt.

What is the Flash Counter and Triangle Away?
There is a counter in the phone that checks for flashing of custom ROMs. If you have flashed a custom kernel or ROM, the counter will increase. When you get into Download mode, it will show that the counter has increased. This tells Samsung that you have modified with your phone.
You can reset this counter by using Triangle Away.

What is this about "locked bootloaders" ?
As you have seen from the writeup above, the bootloader starts your device. In Samsung, it also contains some checking code to determine whether you have a modified recovery and/or kernel. However, Samsung did not lock down the bootloader. A locked down bootloader means you can't root, can't change recovery, kernel or ROM. We all fervently hope Samsung continues in this fine tradition.

Now, other manufacturers practice bootloader locking as a so-called "security measure" to protect, ostensibly, the user. See link above about why your phone is not rooted out of the box. Here is a link to a post by an XDA forumer about bootloaders for Samsung, HTC and Sony.

Also see this post (2013-03-08) by DooMLoRD, a recognized XDA developer, on his steps for unlocking the Sony bootloader. Warnings quoted from his post :

I have tried not signing and not pasting the META.inf and android manifest file..although no bootloop..my systemui revert to original rom..so.... When I was a kid my world was full of pro-America propaganda; I never once questioned American exceptionalism and I cheered for the "good guys" in red, white and blue. Somewhere along the way I became disillusioned with the US, but I'd always figured that a vague sense of unease and a few ethical qualms were as far as that disgruntlement would ever go. After the past month's privacy scandal after privacy scandal and liberty scandal after liberty scandal involving the NSA and the American administration, I'm rapidly moving from being "uncomfortable hosting my data in a US-controlled cloud" to "feeling ethically bound to vote with my wallet in order to send a message". While I do not believe in overarching conspiracies of evil, I do believe that the structure and format of the American political system has become so damaged that the corruption of some individuals in positions of power is inevitable. Transparency is virtually non-existent, accountability laughable and at the end of the day people unworthy of the power and responsibility they obtain are repeatedly given absolute control over the lives of millions: let's not forget that the US Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act forces internet giants to share their users' data with government agents and forbids those companies from talking about it. For all that I am frequently accused of being "anti-American" I hold the US Constitution up as one of the most sacred documents ever written by mankind. (The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights would be the item I consider to be the single most important document in our history as a species.) The creation of the US Constitution was a symbol of a radically different way of thinking about our place in the world. Others had believed in the same ideals that were embedded in the Constitution long before the founding fathers, but none had ever made it stick. It was perhaps the most important turning point in the social evolution of our species since the development of agriculture. The Constitution of the United States of America is not a declaration of rights and freedoms granted to its citizens by the government. That document is a declaration of the limitations of powers granted to the government by the people that allow said government to exist. According to the founders of the US, rights are not something that natural persons are given; that which is given can be easily taken away. Rights are innate and inalienable. All human beings are born with them and they cannot be taken from us. Governments and businesses, however, have no rights which the people do not grant them. Governments and businesses exist at the sufferance of natural persons only, or at least such was the original grand design. In the intervening years since that document's creation the US has got itself all turned around and gone back to an attitude that the people exist only at the sufferance of the government - and all in the name of "freedom". Liberty versus freedom Allow me to expand on my thoughts for a moment and pull up the preamble of the US Constitution: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." (My emphasis.) I have always maintained that there exists a distinction between "freedom" and "liberty", at least as words are used in the modern USA. Freedom has become closely tied to commerce and ultimately to property rights: freedom is wrapped up in the American psyche as a word tied to ownership of a home and the right to be king of one's own little castle. More commonly (especially in politics) it is the right of an individual to form a company and set rules within his company however he chooses. "Liberty" – a word very rarely used any more – seems to have largely retained its original meaning: the innate right of an individual to live life without interference. Liberty is the right to do, say, purchase, love, laugh, live, cry and whatever else they can think of as they see fit. This is the liberty of which the founding fathers spoke when writing the US Constitution. It is a word whose utterance – and certainly whose meaning – has all but vanished from modern American politics. This distinction is relevant to today's privacy, political targeting and "war on journalism" scandals because of the power that the word "freedom" has over the American people. Americans are willing to die for this word because they have been conditioned all their lives to do so. Somewhere along the way Americans - and frankly, I could argue this about the UK and a few other places as well - stopped asking if "freedom" still represents the belief we have all been raised to defend. Is the word as it is used by the politicians and corporations who wield so glibly truly still connected to our ideals? The dichotomy of liberty and freedom illustrates how over time the populace can be - and has been - manipulated to support an ideology antithetical to those who defend it. The behaviour of nations changed simply by redefining a word through its real-world use. While both concepts are used and abused with abandon, for the past thirty or so years, when liberty comes into conflict with freedom, freedom has won every time. How much that is a good or bad thing in your personal politics seems to depend entirely on whether or not you actually have any "freedom" to defend. Those with more to lose are far more willing to reduce the liberty of all in the vain hope of defending their monetisable assets. This is perhaps an explanation for why so many have come to associate freedom with "security at all costs". Nowhere is this more evident than in the words of politicians themselves. Representative Xavier Becerra (D-CA) crystalises the viewpoint evidenced by those governing the US over the past few decades in just a few words: "To me, what makes us such as great country, is that we cherish freedom so much. But you can't have freedom without security. So you have to find the balance." Some things are worth dying for "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." – Benjamin Franklin Canadians, for I am one, are viewed by the world as timid and meek. We cheekily disagree (usually via beer commercials) but our ancestors have bled and died fighting for what they believed in, the same as anyone else's. Many of those brave men and women sacrificed themselves for a dream given form by the American founding fathers. We have our own history – and we're damned proud of it, thank you very much – but the truth of the matter is that the entire Western world owes the very foundation of its modern beliefs to the US Constitution, in my opinion. Our place in the world, our relationship with our nation, the role of our government, military, law enforcement and intelligence services were informed by the belief in an inalienable personal liberty that said "governments are beholden to their people". Many of the laws of not only Canada but most of the Western world can be traced back to these beliefs. The definition of words changes over time, but when our ancestors died with the word freedom on their lips they did not mean "protection of material property and security theatre". They meant "the liberty of individuals to live the lives they choose free of interference". Look across dozens of nations and you will see a history of people fighting and dying for that same liberty, thousands of years before pen was put to paper to immortalise it. Liberty – ours and those of our loved ones – is not only worth dying for, it may well be one of the only things that is. When a country goes off the rails, why should we trust its computing systems? "You're not to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who says it." - Malcolm X As the US has spent the past 30 years going completely off the rails we've spent that same time becoming absolutely addicted to the technology and services it produces. So deeply embedded are we that disentangling ourselves from American technology providers, cloud vendors and what-have-you is a process of years, even decades. While undertaking this difficult, painful and expensive task may not be absolutely required for pragmatic business reasons, I argue that it is a moral and ethical obligation we collectively bear to defend that which we believe. We could simply remain apathetic and allow privacy to evaporate as our laws are synchronized with those of the US, but it that what we want to have occur? No terrorist actions, war, trade sanctions, international politics or other traditional tools of revolution and statecraft will turn America around. Americans have so deeply forgotten the concept of "liberty" that they no longer speak of their freedoms as innate but rather as rights granted them by their government. They see themselves as helpless before an unstoppable and inscrutable juggernaut and their own belief in this makes it so. Her people having abdicated their duty of care. America is a country entirely run by politicians and civil servants with no oversight except in pleasing donors, and no master but the almighty dollar. The only sound that those in charge are capable of hearing is that of a closing wallet. Our addiction to US technology and services leaves us vulnerable to the whims of those who make the laws. For those of us from countries that still believe in the ideals our ancestors died for this is a problem. As business owners we have a duty of care to our customers and employees to treat their data and privacy with respect. We are still expected to defend their liberty as if it were our own. We can not do this if that data ever comes within legal reach of the USA. Foreigners have no right to privacy within the US; indeed, we've even lost the right to habeas corpus there. We cannot lobby for change because the American lobby machine is so huge that it would take all of our nations combined to even make a dent; a political impossibility, if the European Union's influence is anything to go by. Instead, US industry has spent incomprehensible amounts of money lobbying our governments to seize our rights from us! Abort, retry, fail? "Never do anything against conscience even if the state demands it." - Albert Einstein To effect change we are left with a boycott in everything but name. It means that non-US Western businesses need to start using "not subject to US law" as a marketing point. We need cloud providers and software vendors that don't have a US presence, no US data centers, no US employees - no legal attack surface in that nation of any kind. Perhaps most critical of all, we need a non-American credit-card company. If enough of us start to pull our technology purchases out of the US they will indeed sit up and take notice; money leaving the country may well be one of the only things that will ever cause them to do so. America still believes in its own manifest destiny; the problem is that it has lost its way and the very values it seeks to export to the rest of the world have become corrupt. I do not want the legal solution to the Western world's US privacy and liberty dichotomy to be the export of America's neo-Orwellian panopticon. (If you are Australian or Canadian you can download 1984 for a reminder here.) We can no longer afford to allow apathy to direct our judgement. We must show our governments that we stand behind them; that we believe in privacy and personal liberty enough to invest only in privacy-bloc countries. Through our actions – which can be as simple as choosing which cloud vendor you use for e-mail – we need to give our nations a sense of international unity and the strength of will to stand up to American negotiators and say "hold, enough!" The power to quite literally change the world rests not in the hands of the unknowable, inscrutable government suit that negotiates agreements in secrecy on your behalf. That power belongs to each and every one of us expressed through something as simple as where we choose to invest the money we spend. I believe it is our duty to choose wisely and to make those choices based on more than mere pragmatism. The ability to choose differently starts with knowledge and we might as well start building that list here. ® Android Permissions: Permissively Insecure? - 2013-06-08 » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « QUOTE Android, as an operating system, is fairly unique in that it makes users aware of the permissions available to apps in a fairly transparent way. Compared to Blackberry or iOS, which issue granular prompts such as “Can Angry Birds access your location?” or “Can Instagram access your camera to take photos?” There is a somewhat subtle difference here: The rivals give the user a choice about these requests. Jump over to Android where, after installing an app, it has free reign to use every permission you agreed to. While this doesn’t sound an issue, let’s take a look at the Play Store. Let’s look at a nice, popular app (for better or for worse): Facebook. The Facebook app has permissions to: ★ Create accounts and set passwords for those accounts, and add or remove accounts - this allows Facebook to store its account login using the AccountManager, and is good to see ★ access your accurate (GPS) location and network location - this is to allow for geo-tagging of posts and status updates, which some people might want, but others may be very against. More on this later. ★ full network access - Google lacks a way to give an app selective internet access, so this is needed, much as it might be nice to limit the remote servers an app can communicate with ★ directly call phone numbers - I confess to not researching this one – I am fairly sure Facebook lets you tap a phone icon to call someone. Would it really be so bad to just let you confirm you want to call, and avoid this permission? How long until we see profiles listing premium rate numbers as their phone number? ★ read your phone status and identity - This one is a privacy stealer – while allowing an app to tell if a call is active or not, it also is fairly invasive, allowing an app to obtain your phone number, IMEI, IMSI, device ID (etc), and if you are on a call, the phone number you are connected to! ★ read to and write from USB storage devices - Perhaps this is for caching of files, but maybe a tad excessive? ★ install shortcuts on your homescreen without user interaction - Not sure when this is used, but the permission is there, so it might like to self-promote Facebook services? ★ read your detailed battery statistics - As described in the descriptions, this gives low-level battery use data, and can allow the app to find out what other applications you use. ★ see what other apps are running - Likely for the Facebook Home feature, again allows Facebook to see what apps are running ★ take photos and videos at any time without prompting - Rather concerning, allows the Facebook app to take photos or videos whenever it wants, without prompting or alerting you ★ draw over other applications – Likely for the Chat Heads feature of messenger, although why that’s not a permission in the messenger app is a good question Getting tired and out of breath yet? It’s not over yet though! Facebook can also: ★ write to your call log - Why? Just why? This allows for call log erasing and writing ★ read from your call log – and thus see all the calls you have made, and when, and for how long, and who they were to ★ read your contacts - while useful if you sync Facebook contacts, many people don’t want Facebook to have full reign over their contacts ★ write to your contacts - pretty much as above What is perhaps most disconcerting is that while Google acknowledges openly the risks in each permission (I suggest you take a read at the detailed description of some of the permissions on a Play Store listing), the company takes no steps to help you with this. Thus, the entire Android ecosystem is built around you trusting the developer to play fair, and not do anything dodgy. Unfortunately. This. Doesn’t. Happen. It really seems clear that many app developers just DO NOT UNDERSTAND SECURITY. Full stop. And while I might be unique in my recommendation (which I firmly believe is warranted in this day and age given recent information revealing the extent of mass surveillance that is ongoing) to trust nobody, not even yourself. For this reason, I suggest the Android permissions system is totally flawed, in relying on developers to not abuse permissions, and not request excessive permissions. How many torch apps on Android have more than the required camera permission (to enable the camera)? I’d suggest most do, feel free to take a look! You’d think the Android community would rally against such behaviou, but it’s reached a point where it is acceptable for developers to declare a need for excessively gratuitous permissions in order to use their apps. What happened to user choice? I then was pointed towards this post on G+ by Steve Kondik (XDA Recognized Developer cyanogen), which I read with much dismay. While I do not use G+ (closed platform, requiring far too much data to be disclosed to Google), I would suggest that with respect, the need for user privacy and security MUST come first, as it’s clear app developers cannot “do” security. Perhaps if Google introduced zero tolerance for moronic errors in security (plaintext passwords, gathering contacts data, obtaining device IDs that are not hashed suitably with a cryptographic hash etc), it might offer an incentive to consider security? Given many users (wrongly) reuse passwords between services, the sending of plaintext passwords should be sufficient, in this author’s opinion, to justify immediate removal of all of a developer’s apps from the Play Store, forever. Some people just don’t know how to do security. And for them, I sigh. Users deserve security, and privacy, and unless you go ahead and look at the OpenPDroid project on XDA (which I strongly suggest you check out), you are pretty much being abandoned by even the leader of CyanogenMod. While I appreciate his concerns for app developers, it is simply inexcusable to not look into fixing the glaring hole that is contacts access. This is 2013, the era of social engineering, and I cannot choose selectively which apps see which contacts in my address book? REALLY? Something needs to happen here, before people wake up and smell the coffee, and realize this isn’t sustainable. It’s time users became more aware about what apps are doing, and the extent of data mining that is ongoing. It’s your data, and it should be entirely your choice who gets it. You shouldn’t have to avoid an app because you don’t like the look of its permissions; you should be able to (whether as stock Google feature, or custom ROM feature) be able to selectively decline to allow an app to access your data. And this should be done gracefully, either providing empty data (for contacts, or similar), or null data (i.e. requesting phone number or IMEI should return the same response as a tablet lacking these identifiers). Is it right to deny your users the choice, to make life “easier” for app developers? (arguably to allow them to capture user data more easily) I argue it’s not, and it’s time the Android community unites to put an end to apps having free reign over YOUR data. The legislation was approved by Congress in 2007 that allowed warrantless interception of foreign-to-foreign communications. The program is intended for use as a counter-terrorism tool that allows US authorities to access data and information belonging to suspects that they believe pose a threat to US national security. Both the Washington Post and Guardian claim that the NSA has “direct” access to the system belonging to nine Internet companies, in order to monitor data. That information was required in order to “effectively plan, direct and conduct detection and monitoring of illegal narcoterrorist activities”, as highlighted in a past job opening. The companies from which data is gathered include: Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype, AOL and Apple. Other services including — Dropbox — were reportedly set to be added to the roster. Controversy around the program circles around whether the tech firms were silently complicit with the monitoring, and whether PRISM monitored US citizens illegally (without warrants.) The Guardian states that the method of monitoring traffic “opens the possibility” of collecting US data without warrants. The Post looks at that issue in more detail, concluding that the data capturers are “at least 51 percent confident” that a target is foreign. That, it concludes, means substantial amounts of “incidental” US data could be captured — but the issue is dismissed in NSA training manuals dismiss as being “nothing to worry about”. The Post says that “a career intelligence officer” leaked the slides because he believes the agency’s role to be a “gross intrusion on privacy”. The anonymous source added: “They quite literally can watch your ideas form as you type.” Unanswered questions There are numerous questions remaining unanswered at this point, chiefly: All but two firms have denied actively participating in the program, suggesting that the NSA may be filtering and monitoring traffic independently. Both the Guardian and Post implicated the firms as willingly co-operating and opting into the program, so any fact that disproves that would be hugely significant. Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, YouTube, Skype and Apple have all refuted their involvement in the program, and denied knowledge of it. A number of the companies stipulated that they don’t provide “direct” access to their systems, which raises the possibility that the NSA may have ‘indirect’ access, perhaps via an API, which would suggest the firms cooperated. The Washington Post has since backed down on its initial claim that tech companies “participate knowingly” in PRISM data collection. Despite these denials it is important to consider that the NSA would not have released details of the program name to Internet companies, as ACLU analyst Christopher Soghoian points out. Furthermore, those who receive national security letters are prevented by law from discussing their existence in public. A statement from James R. Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, claimed the Guardian and Post reports both “contained numerous inaccuracies”. Pretty quickly, the really interesting applications bang up against privacy issues. I'll save that for another post. Right now I want to talk about privacy issues in CM, Android, and mobile in general. This morning, I closed CYAN-28 with "Won't Fix". This issue was created to bring back the "revoke app permissions" feature that was present in CM7 and hasn't been back since. It quickly devolved into psychosis and anonymous users telling me that we should "screw the developers". Someone also asked me to bring it to a more public forum, so challenge accepted. Why did we drop this feature? In it's current state, the UX was awful. It was easy to wander into these settings and break things in weird ways that were not obvious at all. The code that was invoked when a permission was revoked would usually just cause the application to crash- if an app asked for your contacts, the framework would say no, and the app would force close. So a solution was implemented which implemented "spoofing". This would send garbage contacts or other bogus/blank data to an application which requested it. Also implemented was spoofing of other identifying data about the device such as IMEI. I rejected these patches since they create a hostile environment for applications, and that's not the direction I want to see CM go. My reasoning was confirmed when word of these patches showed up on the blogs and I immediately received quite a bit of backlash from developers who don't want their apps running in unpredictable environments. Proponents of the patches say that CM isn't looking out for the users. I think these patches are just more security theater and don't really solve a problem. Why do you want to run malicious applications anyway? I want CM to be a good citizen of the mobile ecosystem. I also want our users to have the best protection against malicious applications, exploits, and data leakage. We have been pretty awesome at both, and I'm not willing to compromise one for the other. Don't break apps, don't get pwned- these are fundamental concepts for CM. Pretty straightforward. Having app developers pissed off at CM and blacklisting us because their app is crashing is crazy ways due to half-baked features like this is not a good thing. There are a number of users who really want anonymity. I do too in a lot of cases. We shouldn't solve this by using a giant sledgehammer like data spoofing or code injection into apps or the framework. There is a lot of research in this space, but not a lot of it has boiled down to solutions which are useful to the end user. We need to consider the use cases and create things that actually solve the problems. On the JIRA issue, I suggested a fork of CM which was heavily privacy-focused and maybe would contain these sledgehammers. That would be great for users in this mindset, but I want the features we include in CM to be useful to a broader audience. One of the things that CM can do, is build new platform APIs which can be used by applications to do interesting things. We can even build APIs for hugely dangerous things if done correctly. A good example is Android's VPN API. This essentially lets you write an app that can read every single packet of data that flows thru the device. Very powerful. The key here is that not only must the permission be declared, but the user must manually OK this action the first time one of these APIs are used. There's no chance for a casual user to totally break their system if it's done right. For starters, we need an API that lets an application (after manual user consent) manage the IPTables rules on the device. This is insanely powerful, and would enable an entirely new class of applications that can enable transparent proxies, Tor, general firewall rules, traffic shaping, and packet inspection. Could we build something that actually detected packets of data flowing to another country which contained all of your contact data, and notify the user and block the connection if desired? This would be a great thing for CM to have. What about messaging services? TextSecure is pretty awesome. MMS (and Google Talk, and just about every messaging service) isn't peer-to-peer, there is an intermediate step. Your MMS might go over an encrypted connection to your carrier and back out to the recipient over an encrypted connection, but while it's at your carrier it's subject to data mining, secret agents, disgruntled employees, and the NSA. Support for messaging that includes crypto handled only by the sender/recipient with no middleman would be pretty awesome. SELinux seems to be coming soon in Android, and enables a bunch of awesome auditing capabilities. I'd love to hear more ideas and maybe we can build them. How can we really improve security and the user experience without a bunch of smoke and mirrors? Trolling, invoking Godwin's Law, rehashing the stats issue, and general douchebaggery in the comments will get you instantly blocked.

I have a thing for statistics, so I've made this table for my own viewing pleasure. Others may also find it useful, educational or entertaining.

Legend:
Version is self explanatory.
Started is the Start date of the thread, and Ended is the day the thread was closed. All formats are YYYY-MM-DD.
Total Days counts the total number of days between the start and end days of a thread.
Total Posts is self explanatory.
Total Views is an incremental number tracked by LYN whenever someone views a thread, so even though the thread is closed, if someone views it, the number will still increment.

Hence the Statistic Last Retrieved column shows when the Total Views number was logged.

Credits to booooster as TS for versions 1 to 16.

Most phones have already been leaked to death. Without more concrete stuff I'm not allowed to open the Note 3 thread yet

In any case..all this talk bout aosp rom make me vant to live in the bleeding edge tooo..mind sharing whats the thing im gonna missed departing from tw?apart from the battery?really tempted reading all the comments from the non-tw-infidels =p

Dump it after that well from what i observed the powerbank market is quite bad at the moment, everyone is desperate to clear off their stocks and u can see the same product image with different capacity declared (from 12k/20k to some even declared 30k mah) and in the end they are just the same sh!t with different packaging. my 2 years old 5k mah powerbank from taiwan (yeah also brandless) still works but to get the powerbank fully charged i have to charge it for one whole day, more than 18 hours. and that freaks me off so i decided to bring my charger with me whenever i travel now.

Anyway, if you take the first case : (3.7/5) x 80% = 59.2% Second case : (4.2/5) x 80% = 67.2% The reason for 4.2 is coz at full capacity, the battery is at 4.2V. If you take 67.2 x 11200mAH, you get 7526 REAL mAH, which translates to about 2.2 times charge. In reality, it's about there, maybe 2.5 times charge. You can verify this by taking a known GOOD power bank and charge. I have observed that this is correct. I thought you're an EE guy.
