Old Thread Chubby Hamsters V11
A hamster is a rodent belonging to the subfamily Cricetinae. There are 5 types of hamsters, mainly the Syrian, Winter white dwarf, Russian campbell dwarf, Chinese hamsters and Roborovski hamsters. ![]() SPECIES: Syrians (Mesocricetus auratus) They are the best known species in the pet industry. Syrians are also known as Golden Hamsters because the first domestic hamster was a wild agouti colour, which is called Golden. They have also been called Teddy Bears because does have the fuzziness and roundness of a teddy bear. Syrians are known as fancy hamsters of all the hamster species since they come in many colour varieties and also coat varieties... some can have long fur and some short fur, which we normally call Long Hairs and Short Hairs... also there are fur types like Rex and Satin. The most important rule about Syrians is that they are SOLITARY... never house 2 together. If breeding, there is a way where you must put the female into the male's cage only when the female is on heat. It is very risky and dangerous to house 2 syrians together at any time since they are very well known to fight till death. So if you treasure the life of your hamster, never put 2 syrians together. Syrians are large and comfortable to hold. They make suitable hamsters for the beginner keeper. Syrians that are handled properly would rarely or never bite, and can be tame to respond well to touch and voice. Campbell's Hamster (Phodopus campbelli) Campbells are probably the most popular of all dwarf hamsters since they come in many colour varieties that makes them attractive. The look similar to Winter White hamsters but they are actually different subspecies. So never mixbreed them. Campbells are dwarfs... well, small hamsters. Please do not be fooled by petshops telling you they are mini hamsters and giving you a weird price and denying that they are Campbells. Anyway, they come in different colour and patterns but to breed, one must understand that hamsters that have any white spots or markings must never be bred together coz it can produce eyeless or teethless hamsters that die later... so if you were to breed, please read up. These dwarfs may not be suitable for young children due to some dwarfs are bitey... and because of their small size, it would be harder for children to handle. Campbells are not aggressive biters, it is just that sometimes they will bite when you make them angry or startle them from their sleep. Campbells are good in a pair or a small colony but always make sure your cage or tank has the space and enough hides and wheels to house a colony. These social hamsters are territorial and would fight off intruders that do not belong to their colony. Campbells are ok when they are introduced at a young age but letting an older hamster be kept with a younger one, most likely a fight would start. Winter White Hamster (Phodopus sungorus) WW are hamsters that can change their coat colour when we minimise their daylight. Their coats will change from their normal colours to a white coat but with their dorsal stripe and side arches visible. WW come in 3 colours, which are Agouti, Sapphire and Pearl. The Pearl do not change their coat colour at all, they remain in their white coat colour for life. WW are different from Campbells, their eyes are bigger, fur is thicker, body is more bullet shape and their ears are less conspicious. It is easy to see the difference if a Campbell and WW were side by side. WWs are nicer to handle for they have better temperments than Campbells. WW rarely change into their winter coats in captivity, so do not force your hamster to starve and stay in a cold room... this depends on the hamster whether it wants to change or not. WW are almost similar with Campbells when it comes to pairs and colonies. Always remember, it doesn't necessary mean we should keep them in breeding pairs or male and female colonies. A single sex group is good enough for dwarf hamsters. WW are known to fight among themselves out of the blue. Many do not understand that WW are territorial dwarfs, they can tolerate siblings or with other WW when introduced at a young age but there would always be a day where they would start fighting. Have spare cages at hand to separate fighting hamsters if you have a pair or a small colony. The best is keeping one. Do not worry, hamsters do not die from loneliness. Roborovski Hamster (Phodopus roborovskii) Robos are the smallest species of hamster. Adult Robos are only 2 inches in lenght. Unlike the other dwarfs, Robos do not have a dorsal stripe and they have slightly longer legs. Easy to identify from the size and also its sandy colour and white belly. Yes, the smallest and also the fastest, this species is very well known for being very fast and active. So they are not very handle friendly since they are likely to jump or run off your palm. Many are really attracted by the facial markings, they appear to have "eyebrows". Robos enjoy sand baths and a wheel. Due to their small size, one would need to purchase a glass/plastic tank to house them or purchase cages with small bars like the Habitrail Mini... Robos do very well in little groups. They are the most sociable of all dwarf species and it is very entertaining to watch a small group of robos playing and eating in a tank. Robos are not a hamster that is suitable for the beginner keeper as it could either be frustrating to have hamsters that run very fast or just unable to handle properly. Chinese Hamster (Cricetulus griseus) The Chinese hamster is known for their mousy looks. Yes, they were discovered in China long ago. Many people would say Chinese hamsters are hard to breed in captivity and are difficult to raise. Fighting problems occur so it is best to house them seperately. The Chinese hamster is also referred to as a "mouse-like" hamster because of its short nose, thin body, stocky legs and longer tail. They do make great pets if they are bred by a proper breeder and have been handled often when young. This species of hamster in Malaysia is very rare. The last known shop to have sold them were Pets Wonderland at Mid Valley years ago. ======================================================================== VERY IMPORTANT!!!! - Most hamsters do very well alone. Roborovski hamsters can be kept in small groups and best if single sexed but Syrians, Campbells, Winter Whites and Chinese hamsters are best kept on their own. They are always happier that way. - Never breed hamsters if you do not have the space. Hamsters can reproduce every 20 days or so. - Hamster fights are never fun to watch. - Always remember to have food and water available. Never give too much fresh foods as it can give diarrhea to some hamsters, especially pet shop hamsters that have never eaten any veggie before. - The bigger the cage or tank, the more comfortable for the hamster. - Syrians need wheels that are about 8 inches in diameter. Wodent Wheels, Sanko Wheels or Silent Spinners have 8 inch wheels. - NEVER keep different species in 1 cage or tank together... BIG big trouble there, may have some injuries, deaths... and possibility of mixbreeding Campbells with WW... bad idea. - Hamsters do not have human emotion, they do not feel Love or have emotional feelings like humans. So there really is no reason to breed or keep them in a male and female pair unless you have a purpose as a true hamster breeder. ========================================================================= Diet Hamsters should have a good quality staple diet that is available for them throughout the day. Grains are important for hamsters to gain protein, minerals and vitamins as well as the good fat that the body needs to stay healthy. The carbohydrates and natural sugars from grains helps in maintaining your hamster's energy and alertness throughout the day. Wrong or unhealthy diets could cause hamsters to gain weight, show no interest in using it's running wheel and does little throughout the day. Here is a guide on how to feed your hamster healthily. Try not to go for cheap foods that you see available in the market. Habitrail, Delikate, LM Farms.... all these have little nutritional value because they are loaded with sunflower seeds and dried corn. High in fat and phosphorus. Delikate and Habitrail staple food includes alot of alfalfa pellets (the greenish brown pieces) which hamsters do not like to eat at all and you may end up throwing it away. Choose high quality brands like: Vitakraft Nature Dinner for Hamsters ![]() • Contains nature's best raw materials. • This scientifically developed mix is healthy, balanced and of premium quality. • The Natural Variety-Mix contains a wide range of natural ingredients and provides a varied diet. • Specially enriched with pumpkin seeds, millet-spray and spelt. Bathing a Hamster By Tammo ~ quote from Hamsterific.com Bathing removes natural and essential oils from the hamster’s coat, which can cause the hamster to catch a chill and die. Bathing should only be done in exceptional circumstances, like if your hamster has paint, varnish or anything toxic on its coat that may harm it if it licks itself or ingests it. The hamster will clean itself if it is dirty and the substance is not toxic. Chinchilla sand will keep the coat clean and grease free. Normally there should be no need to bathe your hamster with water at all during the course of its life. If your hamster does get toxic or harmful substances on its coat, then you must bathe it unless you are able to cut it out of the coat, e.g. if there is gum or something sticky, that can usually be cut out of the coat. The best way to bath a hamster is this: 1. Get a bowl containing 2 inches of warm water. Test the temperature with your elbow to make sure it is not too hot or too cold. 2. Wet the hamster and gently rub it into the dirty area to cleanse it. Take extreme care not to let any water get near the nose, mouth, ears or eyes. 3. If your hamster has something particularly sticky that’s can’t be cut out in its fur, then you can use shampoo, but it must be baby shampoo. Again, make sure not to get it near the hamster’s face. 4. Carefully rinse out the shampoo, and place the hamster on a towel. Dry very carefully; be careful of the hamster’s legs. 5 .Then, get a hairdryer and put it on its lowest setting. Hold it very far from the hamster and always keep your hand between the dryer and the hamster to avoid burning the skin. ** Since we are in Malaysia, I would recommended to put them in sand bath, then put the carrier to the area with abit sun light. but NOT DIRECT sunlight. 6. Wash your hamster on a warm day if possible to lessen chances of getting a chill. ** noon 12pm - 3pm 7. Make sure the fur is completely dry before returning the hamster to its cage or the shavings will stick to the damp fur. This is not a safe way to bathe a hamster. There are no safe ways to do it. So please do not wash your hamster if it smells or looks a bit grubby. Only if there is something toxic on the fur that cannot be cut off. This method carries the same risks as all others but this is the best way if you absolutely have to do it. If your hamster smells bad, it may be sick and should be brought to the vet as soon as possible. To keep your hamster clean and healthy, make sure its living conditions are cleaned out regularly. "congratulation~~~ is a celebration... "
happy 12th hammie world exploration. =)=)=)=)=)=)=)=)=)=)=)=)=)=)=) Added on December 18, 2008, 12:58 pm QUOTE(vin^ @ Dec 18 2008, 07:52 AM) wah.. how u train ur ww to pee at one place ? it is some kind of automatic however. but does have some hints.can teach ? or is it put the sand.. it will auto matic go there and pee ? for more energetic hamster, they will have own initiative to pee at one spot. some lazy ham will juz pee away from its resting place. the rules of thumb is that all hamster will try to pee away from their nest and hamham have an ability to differentiate the material they step on and may be the condition of an area/ corner (moisture/ dryness/ windy etc). And, the hints is that u can try to extend the resting place of ur WW and set up a spot (make sure it is away from its resting place) with some different material (plastic/ glass floor/ a toilet wit bathing sand). and put some fresh urine on it. and ur ww will as well pee on it. (hope to hear only good news frm u all) another important note is that make sure ur hams hav oredy get known to its cage and all the turner and rooms in the cage. in order to extend the resting place. u can look at wat currently ur ham resting place material and try extend it by putting the same material around. (for me i put tissue paper as carpet into the cage). for those hams that hav been get used on peeing into the bedding, try remove all bedding and replace to its nest material or new tissue paper. for more energetic, smart, pro escaper, they will have initiative to pee into bathing sand and this way is the best to handle the urine. =) ~happy trying~ This post has been edited by konbawa: Dec 18 2008, 01:02 PM |

QUOTE(IcedNyior @ Dec 20 2008, 09:32 AM) haha so cute. Do u hv more hamsters? (i thought i saw another 2ft tank at the back) do the hamsters like the hay + BC combo? Got another 2 tanks, 1 for syrian (Brown) and another for RC (Golden). Seems that they like to use hay as their hiding place and use it to build some sort of nest. p/s: u need to put oil in ur fan so that tak bising. lol I think the noise is more from the fountain pond for my guppies. Can mix but only a quarter pack of Harry Hamster with one whole packet of Habitrail do not make a big different as too little Harry Hamster in it and can't really see. I already tried the dry smoothie before this, really good and convenient. All my hammies love it, even my very choosy fat tailed gerbil who don't really eat anything also love the dry smoothie. That's why today I get 4 packets at one shot. Wanna give one for my cousin who currently staying in Ipoh to try also. If you want it, you gotta pre-order first, don't have ready stock in shop yet.

QUOTE(kwaiisushi @ Dec 21 2008, 03:33 PM) gosh~ Hamsters like to dig around and they also like to push bedding to one place to make that corner like a nest for them, that's why they 'sweep sweep' it away. Sometimes if they feel hot, they also will sweep away some bedding and sleep directly on the floor. I don't think color bedding will make any different for the sweeping problem. On top of that, anything extra-ordinary not so recommended as coloring usually not good for hamsters, so no need to risk their health as they will hide some bedding in their pouch and move the bedding somewhere else. Just use non pine bedding, corncobs or breeder celct or some recycle paper bedding which is natural color is good enough for them.im lost ysd trying to get to petshack~sob sob~sumore print de map fr de website but still ct find for 1 hr~ sigh~ oh i have 1 question^^ from all pictures here i see u guys put a lot of bedding, like cover whole floor~my hamsters seems to 'dun like' de bedding wan, always sweep sweep away~am planning to get dose round round coloured bedding but some say its not gud~any idea?hehe gratz V12 too^^ |

you can buy one pack prestige and mix with the old food, because it takes forever to finish one pack *at least for me*
Else, just switch to prestige, like me. The "junk" food that I bought before I able to get Prestige sleeps there in the cabinet XD |

Wood shavings = RM 7-8 BC = RM 22 but BC lasts longer because it absorbs better (less smelly) so you hv to change it less often. plus its better for long hair it kind of evens out in the long run. or u can mix it a bit, like what i do |

that situation seems to happen to my previous robo...
if the bald area not injured,u no need to worry kot..coz it will tumbuh again...like mine.. but if ur robo is too old..mayb that is 1 of the old simptom. but if injured--u need to bring to vet for antidote. |

I have no idea why she died. Before i went to work in the morning i fed her and everything was normal and when i came back, she was stiff, breathless, cold. I have no idea what happened.Did eating plastic killed it?Coz she liked to nibble on the plastic edges of her house. Its so sad man. |

If only few days and within 2 weeks, it might possible died of wet tail. Wet tail is a fatal disease if delay treatment and it is highly contagious. Wet tail can be caused by stress as if it a new hammy to you and sometimes they can not cope with the new environment and stress up. The bald area is at side butt. The bald didn't have any sign of injured. My assumption for her robos is too old.. I also hope that the fur will grow back. The robos have a daily activities such as scratching. if the bald area not injured,u no need to worry kot..coz it will tumbuh again...like mine.. but if ur robo is too old..mayb that is 1 of the old simptom. but if injured--u need to bring to vet for antidote. |

i left Toph for 3days, with 2 standard size food bowl filled with dry food... and wen i came back, still got leftovers...
it depends on how much ur hamster eat i guess... if u already know how to estimate how much your hammy usually eats, then i think should be ok.... just don't leave fresh veges...and make sure the room u put the hamster in is well ventilated and not too hot.... |

The hole is for you to poke the metal tube end through it so that your hamster can drink from.

Please be careful when feeding fruits to Winter Whites as they might get diabetes as they are prone to it. You can feed them veges more. You can try Taro Smoothie also.

There must be food 24/7 in the tank. 4. You can try protein powder for SG. You can try asking SG owners to sell you some as I know it's a big pack. 5. QUOTE(n_n @ Jan 2 2009, 12:57 PM) Biting the bars will lead to rust of the bars. And your hamster is biting the bars because he likes the taste of the rust. It's slowly poisoning him.It will also lead to nose bleed due to the bars biting. |

But have you done research regarding breeding WW or any other hamster? Do you know what is the requirements? What are risks? Are you ready to handle more than half a dozen WWs? Can you provided enough tanks & food for them? Can you give them all of your time? Etc etc etc...hamster are more cute than i expect^^... oh and btw, later im buying supplies for them, what should i buy?bedding, organic supplement anything else? Please research first or you will be coming in here asking questions and I can tell you that you might get answers and you might get flamed for being irresponsible breeding because "you don't care and they are so cute"! So consider properly and research first before breeding your WW before jumping into something you might not able to handle. FYI, WW are solitary hamster. Meaning only 1 WW per cage/tank. |

QUOTE(SilverSpoon @ Jan 2 2009, 02:42 PM) bad news is YES. u can see them in the cage or may be on ur hamster body. to remove them: u have to 1st buy a hamster cleaning spray (got stated on the spray that it removes ticks and so on). next throw away all bedding, clean up the whole cage and every single toys or tray or rooms in it. and before u put in new bedding, use the spray to spray all over the cage everything and wipe up dry. then only put in bedding. before put in ur hamster, spray ur hamster all over as well. then at last all mites and ticks no more =) congratz.Added on January 2, 2009, 4:57 pm QUOTE(blurjoey @ Jan 2 2009, 02:05 PM) Not to splash cold water in your face. Can you provided enough tanks & food for them? Can you give them all of your time? Etc etc etc... the cuteness of ww hamster wudnt lose syrians. ww wic is smaller in size looks more like a mice whereas syrians look more like bears. of cos they eat less since have smaller size. however, ww has less color option to choose compare to syrians. in the terms of breeding, syrians can breed much more faster(i mean easier) than ww and syrians have more offspring as well. but the best thing is that ww hamster can stay together in one cage. ya i mean u can rear more than one ww hamster in one cage provided they are staying together since small. one thing bear in mind is that they can breed very fast if the environment is right. so, to avoid to have one whole kampung in ur cage, separate them by their sex. Please research first or you will be coming in here asking questions and I can tell you that you might get answers and you might get flamed for being irresponsible breeding because "you don't care and they are so cute"! Added on January 2, 2009, 5:04 pm QUOTE(vchy @ Jan 2 2009, 01:31 PM) ww can breed as early as 2 months old. but of cos this is not a suitable age for them to breed since they are too young and might not well grown yet and don know how to handle their pup. Generally for female hamsters, the ideal age to start breeding is at 4-6 months - any younger and you would risk her having a poor litter (she has still to grow herself) and also increase the likelihood of cannibalism. Leave it any longer than 6 months and you run the risk of birth complications. For male hamsters, they are sexually active from as young as 6 weeks of age but it's probably best to leave them alone till they're about 2-3 months old before contemplating breeding from them. This post has been edited by konbawa: Jan 2 2009, 05:04 PM |

QUOTE(odd_mochi @ Jan 3 2009, 12:00 AM) since my question was not answered...i decided to put the toy into Toby's tank after washing it with detergent [i dun hav vinegar]... You should try soaking the hideout in the dish washing detergent with a bit of dettol for an hour or so. Then throughly rinse with lots of water.and now he is pushing it around...trying to overturn it...and biting it! scared he will damaged his teeth....like...break it or something So far the best I've I found is the white vinegar and oxyfresh. I've also tried with coke & dettol but requires longer soaking period. No worries about hamster teeth as they are always growing. If he is chewing on things which is good for trimming it's teeth. You wouldn't want overgrown teeth as he will have problems eating any food. This post has been edited by blurjoey: Jan 3 2009, 12:14 AM |

QUOTE(vchy @ Jan 3 2009, 05:56 PM) Hamsters cannot take water baths. They can drown if you use the bowl to bathe. Also it will cause stress to them which can cause wet tail disease and die. Also they can get sick and die.Hamster are found in the deserts so where do get water to bathe? Only bathe in warm water as your last resort. WW can sand bath. Just get a deep bowl and pour sand bath into it to about the height of the hamster tummy. Your WW will automatically will go into and roll around. vchy - Please read through this thread first from page 1 and also the previous hamster threads. I really doubt that you even did your research properly. Also you can use google for more information. It's really easy. This post has been edited by blurjoey: Jan 3 2009, 06:12 PM |

QUOTE(vchy @ Jan 3 2009, 07:22 PM) no if they are not raised together since small. cz they donot recognize each other smell. or, u can try put both of them into a whole new cage tat both ww have no smell in it(separate them immediately if they fight cz no guarantee).if u wan to mate them, u can put both of them into a neutral zone where it is a new place to both of the hamster, and let them stay for maybe half an hour to try mating. of cos do hold a ruler or smthing to separate them if they fight. or u can put the female ww into male ww cage when the female is on heat, then the male will get attracted by the smell and mate wit it instead of bite it. normally female ww is more territorial and more fierst. |

QUOTE(vchy @ Jan 3 2009, 07:22 PM) I think you really should do more research rather than 'heard from people' before you think of breeding hamsters, unless you want to have new hamster every 2-3 weeks as they are giving birth to new hamsters and died from the way you wanna take care of them and be a irresposible and an owner without any common and basic knowledge. If you are not good to serach for infos from the internet, then just read the first page of this thread, there is a lot of useful infos and basic knowledge for all new or beginner hamster owners. There's no excuse as "dunno how to look for info", only "laziness" will be the cause. PLEASE..... be a responsible owner for your hamsters. I'm sure you'll feel satisfied after you have learnt more and more with your own effort rather than being spoon feed by others. Gambateh! Guys please don't bathe your hamsters. If you remember from the last V, someone tried to bathe 2 of his robos and 1 ended up drowning. They will panic when they're in water an will flip over, etc etc. It is NOT natural for them to take baths. When it rains they hide out in their burrows.
Another thing, human soap is made and manifactured for human skin. Human skin and hamster skin have different sensitivity. Our soap may feel very abbrasive for them. And if I'm not wrong bathing your hamster will strip the fur of its natural oils so when it looks fluffy, it's actually just dry. So please don't bathe your hamsters ok? |

bath with water or soap is the last and very last option that if ur hammie got stained that cannot be removed from normal sandbathe.
in normal case, bath ww with sandbath only. or, u can buy a hammie shampoo spray to spray on them n let them roll in bathing sand. if it is very smelly and dirty, u can take it out and spray the shampoo kaw kaw on it till it is wet , dry wit tissue and let it roll in bathing sand. it will afterward clean itself till fur dry and this way is good enough to remove dirt and stink. |

XD oh yea, that time i just finish eating junk food XD Added on January 4, 2009, 8:25 pm if ur hamster is pregnant, it shld not come into season again 4 days later, - her abdomen will swell (no, she's not getting fat), and her nipples will start to become more pronounced. after tat she will tend to build nest itself by searching for suitable material in the cage. and she will become more territorial. i think 2 weeks is still too young..coz they still need mom milk..
mayb u can try to put them in daddy cage for about 5 minutes like that under ur guard, afraid daddy bully the pups..and take out again.so daddy can know children smell..when the baby weaned..easy to introduce male baby to daddy..n chances of fight to occur is less since they hv family relationship and been introduce already.. i think it may work..coz i've done that to my robo too...but now they all RIP dy..huhuhu.. |

hi i really do need help. i have this male dwarf hamster. my friend gave it to me when this male kept on harassing, biting the other females to mate. the females rejected him and ended up bleeding bcos of the bites. i took him and i couldnt stand seeing him so lonely. i went and bought another dwarf female and put them together and right away this desperate guy started repeating the same thing and the female squeak alot trying to push him away. any idea why is this going on? any suggestion what i should do? i would prefer to keep them together. or is this actually normal?

What dwarf hamster you got? RC and WW are solitary hamsters. Robos can stay together from young siblings. Also apply for WW if from young siblings. But if you try to put different age gap and different batch hamsters into a tank, there surely will be fights.Hamsters are territorial creatures. You put the female into the male tank? If you did that then means the female is invading the male's territory. He will fight off the intruder or mate if it is female. But I think most probably the female is too young, that could be one of the reasons why she rejected him in the first place. Also they are not human being so they don't have feelings of being lonely. You're the one feeling lonely for the hamster being by itself. Please do the humane thing and separate the male and the female into different tanks/cages. @vchy: would like to remind you that hamster reproduce very fast...so unless u really wan to breed, i dun suggest u to put male and female hamsters together...
@SilverSpoon: depends on ur allergic reaction, if people who are allergic, they can develop skin problem and repiratory problem if exposed to mites... |

Konbawa,Why are you encouraging people to breed and sell to petshops for income? Why are we even raring hamsters in the first place here? Is it to make profit from breeding them? No right? We rare them it is because of the love we have for them. What you are suggesting here is totally wrong for this forum and unethical. Also, breeding is very very bad for female's health and it can shorten their lifespan and it will be very stressful for them. With what you have written above here, this will mislead newbie hamster owners to think that what you said is the "correct thing" to do and they will not separate their hamster for good cause they don't need to worry about having lots of pups cause they can sell them for money and keep their hamster s together. With this, our effort of giving correct info is in vain. One more thing - Do you think petshops will care if the hamster offsprings are of good bloodline? Have you even seen the hamsters that are sold in the petshops? They only care about selling them only. Just hope everyone understand the ethic of 'breeding' for the good of the innocence animals. There's lots of problems if we accidentally breed them although we as humans don't need to experience the consequences but the small animals. That's why we keep emphasize and hope we can make things better for our animals.

you have a very good point there Sangels-san...breeding any species of pets without proper planning, knowledge and solely for PROFIT MAKING is VERY VERY WRONG and i'm totally AGAINST IT.
I homebreed syrian hamsters now, because i LOVE to take care of them very much...watching the babies grow very fast and witnessing their development makes me feel like witnessing a miracle...selling them actually makers me wonder if i'm a bad person who manipulate the circle of nature, but i try my best to provide the best for them, including finding them a worthy owner. For all pet-owners, LOVE YOU PETS, DONT JUST OWN THEM ~! |

i think until the pups have open eyes..then mummy will not eat the pups.
n u can touch the baby if the baby fur fully grown..but not for a long time.. or if u afraid..u can scoop the baby n mummy in temporary box..do ur cleaning as usual..but put some old bedding<choose bedding where mum nurse the pups often> in the cage..then put the baby first..n folow by mom. |

before u really can give ur hamster a very good life with good housing, good food. good nutrition. pls do not breed. once the mum is pregnant. its nutrition in her body will drop to the bottom. are u able to give her everything double dose?
are u able to get them a good home? or simply sale them off. when they are out from ur hand doesn't means its end of story, did u think about how will they be in the 2 yrs time? stuck in a small carrier in someone hand? keep breed like no tomorrow for the 2 yrs? their future life is on ur hand. think of it. |

QUOTE(odd_mochi @ Jan 8 2009, 05:35 PM) does mealworms really help hamster get chubby? Mealworms is mainly for the protein content. You want them to grow sideways? Feed more fresh vegetables and smoothie.toph and toby, can see they are getting long, but not really growing sideways... If you're gerli about handling mealworms, you can feed your hammies soft white tofu instead. This post has been edited by blurjoey: Jan 8 2009, 07:02 PM |

Just adopted 2 Roborovski hamsters~ about 4 months old. They really can run fast! And very active too. They try very hard to wriggle free from the hand grip. SO it'll be a challenge to play with them, unlike those WW and other species.

hi!
i currently hav 2 pairs of WW hammies.. it has been nearly 8 months since i bought them.. i put each pair in different 1.5ft tanks.. i am very sure that many people wont agree wif me putting my hammies in couples as they will breed very very fast.. but, surprisingly throughout diz 8 months, both of the pairs never had babies even once! i always see the males mating wif their gf but still, no babies were ever found in any of the tanks..hoho.. they r surely not siblings bcoz i bought both males n females at different shop.. hmm..can anyone tell me why?plz.. |

The belly part of my two WW is abit yellowish. Is it just dirty or any unhealthy symptom? I used to give them sand bathing and clean the cage every week. Is there any better way to clean off the yellowish part? |

The one bought with the bad container is Timtim (mink banded long haired male syrian). I think Samsam is not from the good gene, he never put on weight no matter how well we feed him and he always got wet backside. In remembrance: Samsam the super long haired solid cream black eyed male syrian hamster. Dear Samsam, You are the super messy boy and make us comb your hair everytime we took you out from your tank. You always walk around with your dirty backside and make us limit your drink and you remember to be thankful to Aunty Foo as she created the dry smoothie for you although you just get to eat for very short time. I know you are a strong boy while you are walking over the rainbow bridge to meet your little brother Digdig and your neighbor Fumoffu. You left us without saying goodbye, but I know why, you don't want us to be sad looking at you when you are leaving us like your little brother. I know you'll be good boy even without us taking care of you. We'll meet again one day, then I'll remember to bring along your favorite comb to comb your hair. We won't be sad for your leaving as we know we have given our best to you and you had a great time with us. Take good care till we meet once again. Attached thumbnail(s) |

Zoozone no longer in production. If lucky, you can still find a zoozone in some petshops in KL but who knows?
There is a rumor that there will be a new zoozone coming out soon but don't know when only. |

Better you go and explore pet shops than asking here. No one here stay or work in a pet shop 24/7 except JTL and babydugong
If want to know about the zoozone and their accessories then call Hagen Malaysia and ask. They will direct you in the right directions. This post has been edited by blurjoey: Jan 14 2009, 01:41 PM |

Closer to that steamboat restaurant (can't remember the name). You can walk over from Pyramid using the pedestrian bridge if I remember correctly.btw, is pet shack just opposite sunway pyramid? i mean like just opposite and can just walk to it? GUYS!!! (Friendly reminder here)
Talking about pet shop with names here is prohibited. They got rules now to band you if you talk about them openly in here. I suggest we talk it in PM if necessary. Read the new rules please under the pinned topic in Pets Wonderland. Remember, no more mention of name or else Mod will think you are advertising for them. |

Depend what time they are sleeping. They usually will be active when we are sleeping. Their timing is the other way round with our timing. Do you have a wheel for them to run in the tank. If hamster exercise ball, can't put them inside for too long, about 10-15 mins max only to avoid stress for the hamsters. What hamster do you have? |

Long haired are always messy, just like my SamSam boy. His hair always get tangled with bedding and I gotta trim his hair for him before it get worse. If the hamster is more than 2 months old, it's hardly get improve by their size, maybe just a bit different with good food. Your JOJO seems already more than 2 months old if I'm not wrong. Sometimes, their genetic also affect their growth in size. |

Went to a pet shop at Ipoh today to buy a new cage and stuffs for my male hamster coz needa seperate both of them.. So the first thing upon arrive at the pet shop , FIRST thing i'll do is check the hamsters they sell there.. I saw a dead WW at the food bowl there and part of the body were eaten by most of the hamsters they put together.. really macam macam breed of hamsters they put together.. I go tell one of the worker there bout what i saw.. Guess what she said to me ? " Aiya that 1 ? saw wrong le... It was mixed breed de.. " I keep telling her i not buying the hamsters or what.. I said there's a dead body there.. But she's off topic -.- totally dumb . I told another worker about it .. and show to him.. Den only he throw away the body.. See how responsible those Pet Seller nowadays only care about money not even consider the pets' condition .. Pity those animals man -.-"

But if you know there are only a few big and famous pet shops in KL. |

Yes you must separate if they are Syrians .hope this helped. Dwarf hamsters also you must separate. Yes that goes for Russian Campbells and Winter Whites. Only Robos can stay together if from young and are siblings (this also works for Winter White) as they might fight when you try to put another with an age gap. They are territorial animals. Marital dispute? is it a sign?? i hav put them in the same tank since last 7months.. but they never had babies.. Hamsters are not human. So they don't have feelings like us humans. They only have animal instincts. They don't need companions with them. So they don't care if they are gf, bf, husband, wife, father, mother, uncle, aunty, etc... they will still fight. So please do the right thing and separate them into different tanks/cages. This post has been edited by blurjoey: Jan 18 2009, 03:51 PM |

wah! my hamsters are dipping their dry food into the smoothie! stress...if like this, the dry food will sure get bad faster than usual...
last nite i took out Toph and Toby...and placed both of them on the tank cover...wanted to take picture of them close to each other. Toby was happily walking around when Toph started smelling and licking Toby's butt!! He even tried to mount Toby! So stress...i quickly separated them... Im confused....Toby is supposed to be a boy (according to the pet shop), but i've always question that fact, as Toby does not have any balls...(..yet..as the worker in the petshop said)... after the incidence, is Toby still Toby? or Tobyna? *confused liao* This post has been edited by odd_mochi: Jan 19 2009, 06:57 AM |

QUOTE(odd_mochi @ Jan 19 2009, 06:57 AM) wah! my hamsters are dipping their dry food into the smoothie! stress...if like this, the dry food will sure get bad faster than usual... You can check by touching Toby's back with soft stroke and stimulate 'him' and see if 'he' have any smell after some time. Females can get stimulated by soft stroke to their back, if they are on heat, then their tail will rise and they stand very still and stiff. You can try it everyday and 5 days in a roll as females will get their heat every 4-5 days. If females get stimulated, some kind of stinky smell will also occur. What pet shop said can't be believe in 100% as sometimes they can be wrong in sexing the hamsters cos they are scared to be bitten by the wild hamsters in their shop. Sexing will be much easier after 2 months old. Even a male met another male, they will also do the same thing like licking the other backside and try to mount. If the other reject and it can end up fighting.last nite i took out Toph and Toby...and placed both of them on the tank cover...wanted to take picture of them close to each other. imo yes...dwarf needs bathing sand... why? becoz they tend to sweat more and fur will become more oily... so if no bathing sand...they will look greasy and wet...
Added on January 19, 2009, 11:54 pmany ideas how to take nice hammy photos? apart from using dslr once out, my boys will not bother about food...give food they will just ignore... more occupied with surroundings...*sweat* This post has been edited by odd_mochi: Jan 19 2009, 11:54 PM |

hi, im a new proud owner of my hammie,
cute, love it, i bought a syrian coz it easier to be tamed, at first, she very scared of me, always squeaking, but now shes good hehe... she runs on the wheel very fast, my father said she can light a bulb haahaah.. i have a question, can i play with her often? coz i worry that she will become thinner if i play with her a lot. i usually hold her 3-5 times a day. thnks for making this thread, ive found my cute roommate. |

Syrian still nibble abit regardless how tame is it. Don't worry. You can feed veggie to make it fat. About twice a week. Clear the remaining after 24hours. Then your syrian will grow in size very fast.
Haiz, my 2 robo really get scared of my but then once they got the sand pile to dig on, they don't mind touching them. Syrian this days quite hard to find. Found some also in bad condition. Especially mid valley. Absolutely no the type as a pet. Breeding robos now. About to deliver soon. Bout after chinese new year if not mistaken. What breed of hamster is it? It is possible for that to happen. The cage might be to complicated and when the female/male got stuck somewhere and their partner might step of them will cause a fight. It happens to my winter white before but i manage to reintroduced them back after 1month.

QUOTE(Ifrits @ Jan 27 2009, 11:12 AM) its winter white. You already did the wrong thing by buying her a female and a male hamster. They will breed and keep on breeding till the female die from malnutrition or the male die from fighting with the defensive pregnant female because the male wanted to mate with the female. Also winter white are territorial hamster and you're suppose to keep 1 per tank/cage. There is always stress to hamster when there is another hamster in their territory.2nd time pregnant ady. Unless the winter white are siblings and have been kept together since young. Then there is a chance of keeping them together but remember same sex pair to keep them from breeding or in-breeding. It happens to my winter white before but i manage to reintroduced them back after 1month. Why were your cage complicated in the first place? Are your WW a male and a female pair? Also why are you re-introducing them again if they are a male and a female pair? This will lead to them breeding again. The female will die due to too much breeding because her body can't cope with the stress of giving birth. Please do the right thing and separate them to avoid your female WW dying, male WW dying, bloody fights, unwanted WW babies, defects in WW babies due to in-breeding, etc. To my knowledge, WW are solitary hamsters and you cannot keep them together but there is a chance they can stay together if siblings and have been together from young. I rare WW for so many years. Putting them together of never experience any fight before except once. Yes indeed the female and male will continue to breed provided there is enough nutrition and space around. Once my WW gave to 9 in a litter, the male stopping mating with the female. What happens is when the female are still feeding the babies with the male around wants to mate the female it will cause a fight and sometimes the female got stuck esp in bar cages and one of them step on them will also cause a fight. I saw it with my own eyes.

Ovo cage is nice for the hamster to play around but when it goes to cleaning it will be the worst part unless you're very free weekly to clean the cage.

But do know that in the wild, hamsters stay alone and will bump into each other to mate and/or fend off other hamsters from coming into their territory. Yes they can stay together but not all of them can. It depends. Good luck. Also know that the more times the female give birth, the shorter her life will be. There is the bad ventilation. Poor water bottle design (small hamster can't reach). Accessories are expensive if you want to expand. The new Ovo Loft is a bit better with the ventilation. To tell you the truth, Ovo are only attractive to us humans but not to the hamster. This post has been edited by blurjoey: Jan 28 2009, 12:00 PM |

You can also heat a screwdriver and melt a hole through.1. Drilling may cause the tank to crack. 2. Suction cups will leave marks. Yes it does leave a mark but I wonder who is going to see the mark behind the suction cup? Wouldn't the hamster able to climb the plastic pipe net around the bottle and chew on the cover? Every method have it's pros and cons. So depends on which you want to use. This post has been edited by blurjoey: Jan 28 2009, 12:52 PM |

-i wonder whether does anyone here knows any hamster breeders around KL or at least nearby?
-ok,the second question is abit random... ow many hamsters have you owned in the past? and which breed is your favourite? EDIT: i was just surfing the net on hamster cages. then i made up my mind to like learn more about habitrail OVO cages. to be frank i think these cages aren't the best out there. they may look futuristic but those small confined spaces upsets me. they may look attractive., unfortunately we're not the one who's going to live in it. it is the poor little furballs that are. i've got no idea why people go for those cages when there are many other choices like tanks, bin cages, good branded cages and etc... so my question is: what do you think of habitrail and habitrail ovo cages? this question is not meant to be offensive. but why don't we share ideas so that our furry friends can have a comf life? There are a few hamster breeders around in the garage sales.
Check there but it seems some have gone quiet. 2 robos (both gone) 11 syrians (5 still alive) 1 duprasi gerbil (still alive) Syrians are the easiest to handle and tame. |
