Hi,

For 8 days, you can almost see the whole Taiwan if you take travel package. I said almost because the guide will let you have like 30 mins to 1 hour to look around. And most of the time you will spend time travelling in a bus. Furthermore, some of the guide will bring you to those shops that sell stuff in order for them to get commision.

Areas of interest, it depends on your interest. If you like shopping the night markets there are great. But it's quite hard to bargain. Jiu Fen is a nice place to visit too. You will find many fancy food there like the Niu Rou Mien..etc.

You will most probably see lots of Malaysian/Singaporean at that time because it's about Raya holidays.

if i dun take the travel tour, is it easier to walk around there? have u been there? is it nice?

If you know chinese words very well, you can go by yourself.
I'm a banana so I have to take a package..hehehe...

any idea how much the air ticket to taiwan? around June good time to go?

About those 8 day whole TW trip.
It is very tiring .. spending a minimum of 2-3hours per day in the bus

Went there once for a week with those tour, it is tiring.. and kinda boring for most youngster i think. Since we will be bought to those "temple stuff, some king's residence blablabla".

Taipei is a great place to travel if u know to read Chinese/speak Mandarin.

The pple there are friendly, convenience and easy access transportation, good food and very interesting nite mkts and nite life. No pblm to travel at your own at all if u do some trip planning in advance.

Oct~Nov is a nice season to visit there, its getting cold and temp abt 20C.
Since u still have few months away from Oct-Nov, u may start to observe the air ticket promotion. Round trip incl tax is around RM1500.
3* hotel at Taipei ximenting area is NT1500~2000/day/room.
Their roadside food 小吃 is about NT50~NT100.

any interesting places to recommend mainly for youngsters??? if i take backpack, where do u think i should go? is the transportation easy? i mean do i need to wait long time for the MRT tor bus or any train?

i travel to taiwan twice last year...

if u knw to drive MOTORBIKE is better..
cause a lot of place u can reach by bike..

i travel to all the place by MRT..
hot spring is a nice place to go..
a lot of food to eat of course..

bt i only stay at taipei..

I've been backpack to Taiwan during Nov 2005 with my friends. We've visited to Taipei & HuaLien districts for the 6D5N trip. In Taipei, we've went to places like XiMenDing (we also stayed there), LongShan temple, Ye Liu, Jiu Fen, Taipei 101, CKS memorial, National Museum, ShiLin, TanShui, Wu Fen Pu night market ect. In Hualien, we just managed to visit Toroko National park. The weather was nice (around <=24C) during Nov. It's quite easy and convenient to explore the Taipei city via their MRT.

Taiwan will be my 1st oversea travel spot, saving money for the trip....
i really like Taiwan as well as China, feel like back home since i'm a chinese, hehe....

where did u stay during that time? is it easier to walk aroudn in tw?

We stayed at wonstar hotel (but i won't recommend it, instead, i'll recommend 'Rainbow hotel' there) for 1st nite we arrived. we booked this hotel thru local travel agent. We stayed at the other low cost hotel in ximending for the subsequent days we in Taipei.
Taipei is easy to explore via their public transportation (mrt, bus). most of the interesting places like Ximending, LongShan temple, Taipei 101, CKS memorial, National Museum, ShiLin & TanShui nite market can be reached by mrt (its save $ if you buy 1day unlimited ride pass). Ye Liu & Jiu Fen can be reached by bus. Other districts, for example HuaLien can be reach via train (around 4hr++ journey). It's quite important to do your own homework before going backpack there.

For someone travelling on budget, I can highly recommend World Scholar House in Taipei, website: http://www.worldscholarhouse.com/

It's located in a good area, very reasonably priced, easy to reach from the airport (read the instructions given on the website) and not too far from public transport.

Be careful if you want to choose another hostel as cheap accommodation tends to be really crappy in Taipei. Outside of Tapei 400-600 TWD will do for a basic but clean hotel room, easy to find if you speak Chinese (I don't). Backpacker accommodation rarely exists outside of Taipei and tends to be overprized.

I liked TaRoKo National Park a lot. Kaohsiung however is just a busy city with crazy traffic, nothing much to see. I also liked the flair in Keelung which is a short and cheap bus ride from Taipei (a bus departs close to World Scholar House) and DanShui (reachable by MRT) is also nice, both on the coast north of Taipei. I didn't go to Alishan but that's a place you shouldn't miss. No need to go to the big cities, they are not too different from any other city on the world. Including Tainan in my opinion, which is said to be nice though.

What I liked most in Taiwan and what makes it the nicest country I visited in East Asia so far are the lovely locals though. They are not really used to tourists, so they don't try to exploit or abuse you and rather have a sincere interest in meeting a foreigner and helping you in any way they can. I'm Westerner though, so my look differs to locals and maybe gave me extra-special treatment.

Since u r going twds the end of the year...Go look around for promotion ticket. Singapore airline sometimes offer RM800 return ticket excl taxes, though gotta transit Spore. JetStar budget airline at Spore also flying taipei. U may check it out too.
EVA air and China Airline are other options...but they seldom have promo ticket.

For 8 Day , I Thinks U Can't Travel fINISH , Coz Taiwan Is Big Town , Got East ,South , West , North !

i went taipei to watch s.h.e concert on 2006 sept 4.. 3days 2nights tour.. lolx..
all f.o.c ( air tickets,accomodation n food-breakfast,lunch,dinner sponsored by hotlink )
but i spent 1k+ in 2days..
coz i nvr sleep for 2nites,non stop walking around.. went si men ting to shop..
the items is freaking exp! but u nid to nego.. just like Petaling Street.. but the sellers are mostly LENG LUI!!

I was in Taiwan for 2 weeks...
I love the weather there in Nov, it was cool and breezy..
taichung, hualien,danshui,ximending,taipei, yingge, yilan....all I went except the southern part - Tainan..

I will be going there again soon...Taiwan is a great place for ppl who reads chinese and speak mandarin/hokkien (tai-yu)
It's just like visiting Japan in a way...as the building and culture are similiar..esp the gals..

The other underground malls are at the Taipei Main Station. The Front Station mall is shorter and the other is at the Rear, known as Taipei Metro Mall. This is long. Both are good places to pick up bargains - shoes at NT200/ Undies/Socks from NT30 up, Hats/Caps/Umbrellas/Tshirts from NT100/- Fung Hsui stuff (neat stuff to giveaway From NT10 ~NT50) When you get tired of walking, there are places there to eat or have a cuppa.


Hsinyi District
Taipei 101 shopping centers: New York, New York, ???? n Warner Village. High class shopping area.


WuFenPu - HouShanPi MRT (wholesale clothes market)
After Singkong Mitsukoshi in Xinyi, Cross the road to Warner Village Bus Stop and take Bus 611 or 284 to Wufenpu about 7 mins away. Wufenpu is good on weekends avoid going on a Monday. This is a wholesale shopping haven for the ladies.


Ximenting (XMT)
More for youngsters and teenagers. Most happening during weekends where singers sign autographs and movie stars doing promotions etc.


Raohe Night Market
Just walk over from WuFenPu.

For me, if i wanted to go for anyway to holidays, my main focus is to enjoy myself, understand their culture, understand the way they live, and all this stuff like buying souvenir, no way.

ohh... anyway i always thought good things in life are to share... that's why while i travelling i still thinking of buying souvenir for people beside me...
by the way , i thought i can get some helping hands over here like its used to be , not those people trying to teach u do & don't on travel... (yes ! correct me too if i wrong)

Chocoholic, you are right ! I agree to you, we will buy sth to our family and friends whenever we go for travel... Maybe for girls, the perception of traveling is different from other. They won't _stand the enjoyment of shopping, even window shopping.

My one day in Taipei

I am currently in Taiwan for a business trip. Due to inavailability of the flight today, I came here yesterday and had a whole day free time today. So I called an old friend (my ex-superior actually) and he delightfully wanted to show me aroud Taipei. That is a good news to me cause I didn't know jack of Mandarin, Hokkien etc. He said, one day would not be enough though...

So in the morning, he picked me up at Hsinchu (85 km from Taipei), and we went by car through the #3 highway. On the highway we could see sexy gals with see through clothes selling betel leaves + areca nut - sirih + pinang tu laa.. My friend said that the Taiwanese loves to chew these thing. (I tried this when I was a small kid because of my curiosity when watching my nenek chewing them. Not a pleasant taste then..)

On the way we stopped at the R & R - Don't know what was it called, but it had a beautiful scenery. Today was quite windy it was not hot at all. I was not able to snap more pictures cause we were in a hurry then.. duhh



We stopped at his place to park the car and took the MRT Metro train to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. A ride will cost from NT20 (abt RM2) to NT60 something in the MRT.



Unfortunately it is currently under renovation. There are promotional booths for goods from Pengu island set up in front of the memorial hall - some kinda fest. There was also a mini concert with a sucky vocalist throwing out some rock tracks.







Then we went for lunch - a mixed Japanese - Chinese buffet at Splendour Restaurant. Took the MRT and stopped at Dapingling. The building was just outside the station. The lunch costed NT680 (abt RM70), Hi-Tea would have set us to NT580. I think it is worthwile since we can also get unlimited Haagen Daaz, and fee flow wine, beer for the alcohol drinkers, apart from the usual foods. To avoid the babi element I opted mostly for the Japanese cuisine (sushi, sashimi tenpura whatever..). So sad cause I would love to try Taiwanese food. My friend said taht they are famous for their beef noodles.



Then we moved to Zhong Hwa, a paradise for electrical / electronical products. The place reminds me of Akihabara and of course LYP . Generally the price was lower but I did not buy any because of warranty problems should any problem arises.





After that, we went to 101 tower, or was it IOI mall? Took the MRT to Taipei Municipal Hall and used the free shuttle bus. It was raining and the tower was shrouded with clouds so we scrapped our plan to go up. Inside it was just like KLCC, with many branded products outlet.

We then moved to Shilin Night Market. Just stop at the Jian Tan station there, one station before Shilin station. The Shilin market was full with people - lining up for the famous fried chicken there. Foods sold there costs from NT40 to NT90. Didn't take any of them though. Then my friend bought a pack of stinky tofu.. Dang it really stank! But the taste was OK and acceptable to me. There are also other exotic foods such as duck hear, tongue, feet - fried.. etc being sold. For other things, it was not much different from our own Petaling Street, except there was no forcing of buying things . Shoes was generally cheaper that Malaysia didn't bought any. Bought some souvenirs for the peeps home though





Finally went back to Hsinchu by the TRA train. Took me about 1 and 1/4 hours and the worst part is that there was no seat available and I had to stand all the way to Hsinchu.. My leg still hurts now.

So well, that is one day in Taipei. I did not have the chance to go sightseeing at the parks, mountains etc which I would really wants to. One day is definitely not enough. One thing still boggles my mind though, with high fuel price and rentals, how come them Taiwanese can still sell things with the almost the same price as us in Malaysia...

taipei 101 (lots of other shopping complex nearby), mei li hua, xi men ding

i just back from taiwan 2 weeks ago... suggestion places to shop were wu fen pu (wholesale place , cheap but not trendy but still ok for classic wearing, cannot try on the clothes), shilin nite market (cheap too, but not many choices, can get a bag from TWD 200 onward, accesorries ) lastly xi men ding (wat to say, trendy with all the latest !... can get everything from tips to toes... i managed to get a handbag over here, unique! around TWD2000) just this few places enough already .... one more thing is now is winter over there, so bit difficult to get suitable clothes to wear for malaysia weather. accesorries, handbag and shoes will be best , other than that depand on your preference....

Just want to know, which airport you departed from? I heard my friends say we can take flight in Singapore and from there fly to Taiwan (due to it cost less).

i joined a trip in taiwan & with china airline.
i been to taipei , taichung , yi liu, tan sui & etc...the view nice and unique worth although long hours travel on the bus. the most interesting parts of coz shopping & stall 2 stall makan @ nite market ...
but make sure a group of your friends like to eat too as need to share between for variety of choices.
for shopping , the places i been enough to shop till we drop. haha
i trying to collect all pixz from friends' cameras & will create an album online sooner. i let u know by then... as u know a pix said it all....

Issit really difficult to travel around in Taiwan? I mean to find those places to visit?
Cause i am planning to go on free and easy there, find the way all by myself?
Issit recommended that way?
If not, do you look for local travel agents there ?

if you do not know mandarin, it might be difficult for you to go places where mrt not reaching coz u might not able to ask the local and check online. Otherwise their mrt cover mostly all important places you might want to visit in taipei city. Their mrt of coz will put our lrt in shame. If you want to go places outside of taipei, you can go Taipei Station (like our pudu raya) to catch bus. To go Kaoshiong, you can use bullet train.

PS : If you want to go now, it might be too cold for us. My fren said much colder than genting. My taipei fren just came to msia.

Erm... Touring Taiwan seems to be less expansive compare to Japan.

I did talk to some guys from taiwan and they mention during end of april likely to be end of spring....there should be spring flowers around....the weather maybe like genting.......i'm not so sure about the hot spring.....so far i knew there's a lot some hotel even with build in hot spring but might be $$$$....

If raining on last year 29th Apr 07, doesn't mean that it will rain on 29th Apr 08, 29th Apr 09 and so on... lol...

Wil be going to Taiwan for computex taipei 2008.. hopefully u all can suggest whats the best for me from airplanes and place to visit..for sure i just stay at taipei world trade centre for 7days

hi... my trip to taiwan cancel... coz got the chance to go India this year so Taiwan maybe next year... India is nice with all the historical building, Taj Mahal... but very dirty n hot.... sick when i was there... however, happy that i have been there b4...

Yay, I am bored at Taiwan.. Ntg much lah acutally. Everynite go their 'pasar malam' je. Nothing much at all. I have been to Kaohsiong-Taichung-Tainan-Taipei and duno where liau.. sien like mad.. Wheather also very cold cause winter that time...

Have you tried smaller towns? Usually smaller towns I find it more interesting and there's alot of hidden small restaurants that serve excellent food that can't be found in the high class shops.

I duno oh..But i think that Taiwanese food is a little overated

I'm back fr Taiwan already !!!!

The weather very nice......1st day only drizzle a bit....the rest of the day were juz like msia but more cooling as it's windy. Thank god the Central Weather Bureau Web Site wasn't accurate as it predict everyday raining. Another thing to thank god is that the sichuan earth quake didn't effect Taiwan.

Overall, still ok, nice ppl, nice hotel, food still ok (still prefer msian fd), whereas for shopping, not cheap thou........some say buying NIKE stuff is cheap there but I compared the price, still prefer msia price. But noted esprit is quite cheap there..........the pasar malam there.......hhm maybe their design is special la.......msia couldn't find 1 but some are not cheap o.

Another thing to warn all is that..........tour guide will prompt to bring u to 'black' shop (haha.....if u know wat i mean in kantonese)........selling Ling Zhi, Pi Xiu (a kind of animal for guarding money....exact despription i oso not that sure) and Jade. The only thing i think worth to buy is the Jade, others depends on how superstitous and how rich u are.......lol.

Conclusion, Ok la........but likely won't go there twice especially if it's whole taiwan trip. May be just don't like the long bus journey between towns.

The pasar malam ones are quite over-rated too many people they tune down the quality to be able to serve to the masses. Btw did you try the chicken rice there its my favourite (Not actually chicken, more like shredded turkey), the glutinous rice is nice too got some red coloured sweet sauce. Should try the morning breakfast shops (Red banner one its a chain) too the burger is better than KFC's Zinger lol

If I go to Taiwan, I'll definitely visit all those places with idol stuff.
Hopefully can go visit Jay Chou's restaurant too

I need some suggestion how many days to travel around taipei, taichung and kaohsung? I will plan to go this Oct with another friend. Will travel from city to city by bullet train.
