ok i used the search function for keyword home button liao and nothing related came up, so hence the thread to ask

Hey supp fellas, wan ask if any of u have this problem or not. My home button sometimes doesn't respond even when pressed on. but it's not failing all the time though :/
Now it's like u have to press it at a certain angle only can doh.gif
the button is not sunk in or anything like that.

<UPDATE>:
Went to DiGi centre at Pyramid to ask about how the warranty works.
Just as i guessed, as how things has always been in my whole life; bringing spoiled item to complain at shop recovers when tested by the salesperson.

Of 10 times pressing, it failed maybe 1 or 2 times in the hand of the salesperson.

anyhow, the guy told me in order to be able to claim for warranty, the button has to fail 100%. It'd then take 1~2 weeks to replace 1:1 depending on stock availability. :/

i HATE intermittent failures..... fark

Thanks andrew for sharing this info. It does help a bit, albeit rather temporary. but heck, it still works

QUOTE(Andrew Lim @ Mar 28 2011, 09:59 AM)
This morning my iPhone 4 Home button started acting wonky again. Apply pressure and massaged as shown in the picture below and it triggered the unlock screen even though I didn't actually press the Home button. After that the Home button started responding again.

Solution 2 (haven't try)

Possible root cause
QUOTE(WimpyKid @ Apr 26 2011, 10:45 AM)
This is due to the pcb membrane located under the home button. For those under warranty send back for claim. Over warranty sets need to replace this and issue will be solved.
*
Alternative solution, for those who has jailbreak their ipon
QUOTE(figure8 @ May 1 2011, 11:30 PM)
it simple, activator can define a gesture/action/button to launch an apps/action. check this screen below. u might get an idea.

If u're Maxis subscriber and wan claim warranty, Maxis KLCC is fastest. Few forummers had their phones exchanged within hours

If u JB your ipon, before u claim warranty
U'll need to restore your phone to new iphone using iTunes. U can't directly reset all settings from the phone. These guys advised as such:

QUOTE(enriquelee @ Oct 3 2011, 08:15 AM)
Confirmed can not direct from phone. I just tried yesterday.
*
QUOTE(WimpyKid @ Oct 3 2011, 08:44 AM)
Many has use the "Erase All Content and Settings" from reset option and got stuck on apple logo. Best choice would be to restore it before sending it for claim or even selling your iphone. smile.gif

If the phone still under warranty, claim it. If no, send to phone shop to repair your home button. smile.gif Almost every iPhone has the same problem, when it used for a long time.

Question, if send to shops to repair how much is the cost?

I know eventually will get this on my phone depending on my usage of the home button (trying to minimize usage of the home button).

actually there is a thread quite similiar to ur problem. pls search harder. http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1729083&hl=

but yea, its 99% hardware problem. i have the same problem. single click registers as double click. single clicks dont register at all. double click takes u to home screen and not multitaskin bar. its very random and u need to press very hard right in d middle for it to function properly. really sux. im waiting for the home button to completely break and finally claim my waranty coz i doubt maxis wud change the fone coz d prob is very random n might not show up during the waranty claim.

I believe the home button lag is not due to the hardware, but you're free to go ahead getting yours changed. I've the same problem with my 3GS, the problem will go away if I closed all the apps in the memory but the button will less responsive when I build up the apps in the memory.. resetting the iphone solved the problem but once the apps build up again, the lag is coming back.

sorry to spread the bad news. but ip4 home button problem is quite an issue. try googling it and ull see countless complains. from a more personal experience, i restored the fone as new fone and the problem still persists. i need to press spot-on in d middle of the middle with pressure. its kinda annoyin but i got used to it overtime. lucky im on a 2yr warranty. so if it gets worse, ill send it over to maxis.

in a nutshell, this problem is quite big among ip4 users. blame it on the low quality home button i guess.

i think those who have the same problem should just send it over for warranty just before your warranty expires or if it really starts to irritates u nod.gif

My iPhone 4 Home button is also unresponsive occasionally. I'd have to press several times or very hard to get a response. Anyway I won't claim warranty from Maxis until the problem gets very bad. Most of the time the Home button works fine so the problem is very hard to reproduce.

i've found a temporary solution though. i bought a Black Square from http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...hl=white+square and it helped cuz now it registers just as normal. quite pricey too for a sticker. i suggest going for a white one instead of a black since the colour of the black one isnt really black, its greyish. didnt wana complain since its just a sticker but really, it helps. those with this problem can opt for http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1763354&hl= cheaper but its a bundle! hope this helps. a more permanent solution is to go for a replacement, but for me, that'd be worse case scenario! smile.gif

i highly recommend getting the iHome stickers or whatever you wana call it cuz it really helps. one thing, it is really STICKY! make sure you align it correctly when you stick it, don't want it to look SENGET. i cant seem to peel it off (maybe a pen knife would do) YET.

The cure all for this issue is to replace the home button flex.

You can see the flex in this picture, removed from the phone:

http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/XUTOo2NVRjC2lVZX.huge

It's a cheap part, just requires a lot of work to get down to it.

Apple should do some update and provide the function so called "Kill Background" ..
Else, end up hitting the Home button multiple times just for the sake of killing the background apps.

The comments on this article are interesting: iPhone Help: Fixing an Unresponsive Home Button. Several comments say that you can try fixing the problem by pressing hard on the screen near the left/top-left of the Home button. That may be where the Home button flex is located.

went to Maxis @ Pavilion last night to inquire.
the fella tried my phone and he managed to encounter the error 2 times.

when asked about the claiming procedure he said they send your phone to check (10 - 15 days) and will try to fix it. if they couldn't fix it they will give you a new set. he didn't answered me if it's a refurbish set but he insisted one on one exchange.

will send mine for warranty after iOS 4.3 jb is out. this time i'll be going to KLCC. HQ better.

i HATE intermittent failures..... fark

i have to press mine on d bottom right hand corner of the button. d most unresponsive part is top left. its almost unresponsive 95% of the time on that top left corner.

This morning my iPhone 4 Home button started acting wonky again. Apply pressure and massaged as shown in the picture below and it triggered the unlock screen even though I didn't actually press the Home button. After that the Home button started responding again.

This is due to the pcb membrane located under the home button. For those under warranty send back for claim. Over warranty sets need to replace this and issue will be solved.

Try intentionally breaking the Home button to claim warranty. tongue.gif

By the way, my Home button has been behaving surprisingly well for the past few days. I'm not sure if it's because I've changed the way I press the button. Previously I just pressed one part of the button with my thumb or finger tip. Now I cover the whole button with my thumb and press gently.

DIGI is just taking the easy way out. there's no such thing as 100% failure then can change. definitely not from Apple. you have the right to change if it's NOT normal. You just have to make your stand on this.

The Maxis @ Gardens seem more easier to deal with. They don't need 100% failure rate. They didn't even check properly. Just say send in anytime.

But for now seems to be working so won't send in.

Went to DiGi centre at Beach Street penang.

Had them look at my phone, they confirmed it's failing and needs replacement. Say will do 1:1 replacement for me, but stock no in yet. so they'll gimme a call when stocks in, roughly >1month.
I'm ok though, as long as they replace it for me i'm fine biggrin.gif

I'll update u guys as necessary smile.gif

Mine just bought an maxis iphone 4 but the home button is faulty already..
Really frustrating!
If got replaced with new set? Will the home button be ok?
Afraid after few weeks using the home button would faulty again

That is why you need to jailbreak using redsnow ver rc16 to enable multigesture...it has kept me from using the home button for quite sometime now...

unless your phone is less than 1 month old, making a big huha might get you a brand new set on the spot.

i've been to the Maxis Center in Pavilion. the fella said they will send the phone back to their team to check which will take 10-15 days time. if they can't fix it they will replace you with another unit.

i've tried asking if the 'another' unit is a brand new set or refurbish set, the so unfriendly fella said "we have this one on one replacement policy for iphone"

although the problem is annoying me, i still haven't send my phone back for warranty. i can't imagine separating with my phone for almost 2 weeks time!

2 weeks ago, i went to replace my maxis iphone due to the home button..they have a policy whereby they replace the whole unit and not fix the home button only..
only maxis centre at klcc and ttdi have the service, other centre will have to send it back to either of that 2 centre to get the replacement.
so if u dont want to be seperated frm ur phone for more than 2 weeks, go there cos only being phone-less for 30mins max..
they will give u a new unit and a new service card with the phone..

there is no such thing they need to check or what, they just check on the spot. one of mine friend's digi set got faulty, he went digi center but they have no replacement stock so they ask my friend go back once got replacement stock they will call him, after 2 week he got his replacement set, and they didnt even took my friend set to perform such 'check'.

OT: but seriously maxis CS sucks to max, if they cannot answer customer's question, they will straight ignore you, that is what thing i kena at Maxis Center Mahkota Parade Melaka.

maybe different place different way, but for me i rather trust digi than maxis, just because the maxis guy impolite with me so i dont want leave my set there, later they just simply keep my set for two weeks then call back me say that my set is no problem at all then i just wait for nothing.

not to say whos is good who is bad but really fed up of maxis vmad.gif

Hey I'd like to ask, my home button for iphone 4 its abit faulty, isit common for all iPhone 4 users? Say I would like to service outside, as in a third party shop instead of going back to Maxis, how much will it cost roughly.

Replies are very much appreciated!

i've tried asked. saw an online ad of a shop in pj, sms'ed asked. they say RM250 D:
i've also asked at the fon shops in shopping malls. one flur say <rm100, but advise me to claim warranty first if still got.

things to look out for:
1. whether after the repair it's good again or not
2. if it'd void your warranty
3. backup your data and if can send as empty ipon. u wouldn't wan your stuffs to kena curi.

since the price difference is so much, i also a bit was-was if the <rm100 is good service or not.
anyway, if u did manage to find repair shop, let us know of the outcome! biggrin.gif

Why so many 2 weeks?

Neway, just buy an adapter to fit in with your microsim to work on normal phone.

I just to thank TS for this. Now I'm using Activator to invoke Home and Sleep button, and also app switcher. I indeed feel better using Home and Sleep button less than I normally use.

Thanks again for the useful tips.

i think the warranty is voided as soon as u tamper the fon. not sure though i haven't open ipon before.
maybe there's a sticker or some sort tht says 'Warranty void if tampered' or something

u may void ur warranty if ur open ur iphone urself (self repairng etc)

if ur still under warranty u should send it back to claim warranty lor..
dont waste it.. it is much safer that way

but i saw some of the lowyatians do repair services and they did a good job at it..

Ytdy i went to gardens Maxis to claim for my faulty home button. at first the employee like relunctant to change and saying d button can work. (duh ofcoz it works if u apply max pressure on d button). den after pressin abit more n attempting to bring up d multitaskin bar, d success rate was bout 10% only. he den admitted d button is spoiled and said can claim warranty but it takes 2 weeks for dem to process d claim compared to klcc where it only takes approx 2hrs..

what i can say is its such a stupid policy to wait 2weeks for d claim.. so while waitin for d claim, are they gonna supply us with a temporary fone? i doubt it..

p/s i hope can change my black32gb ip4 to white tongue.gif try my luck lar..haha.

If got stock for Replacement Set then it will take shorter time to Claim.
You mention KLCC 2 hours then just go for KLCC

Black to White ? Cannot lar Bro .. They will not replace you the White ..

Advice ..
No need wait them call ..
The percentage they call you = percentage you win a lottery.
Call them and ask about the Replacement Stock .

sweat.gif sweat.gif
Do they replace it with a new 1 = NO
with a refurbished unit = YES 100%
take your phone back to repair the button = NO

P/S:
When you Claim, They will give Replacement Set (Replacement model number will end up with LL)
No worry.. Refurbish set is just like new set

We also discuss before at this thread.. All the info you need also included

my home button was faulty, I only can get a succesful double tapping say in 1 out of 10 times...
so I sent to KLCC maxis centre to claim for warranty on Saturday, and I got a new phone on Monday...
That guy was telling me, I can actually get the new phone on the same day if I went on weekdays.... biggrin.gif

hi guys. im kinda reluctanct to go to digi centre to change my phone coz i dont wanna get a refurbished set. the thing is, my home button is perfectly functional, double clicks and all.. the only thing that bugs me is that sometimes it get stuck and promted the voice control.

I, myself knows how to press the button wthout getting it stucked, cos it'll only get stuck if pressed more on the upper left side of the button/ at position 11 o'clock or upper right side/2 o'clock.

can anyone give me a solution as to repair/ clean/ tips to make it less stucky? this is because sometimes my friends used it, it always stuck and prompted the voice control. and the best thing, my iphone 4 is just 1 month old!

please help!! thanks!

Bro .. Sorry to tell you,
Better send it for Claim.
Actually you can DIY yourself, But you need to Open your Iphone.
Really not Recommend for New Set ..
Solution = Just Claim it

Funny enough my Home button no longer has any problems. May be because I changed the way I press it. I cover the whole button with avthumb and press it evenly and not just at one corner. Been about 2 months without problem.

mine was pretty bad last week. after i dropped it few days back, it seemed ok now. i still went to klcc today n they cudnt see anythin wrong (coz they were using their whole thumb to cover the button n pressin it hard). but they still offered to change, altho they recommended not to change till it bcums totally faulty or later on as it nears ur warranty coz d replacement model might be d same n coz ur gettin a refurbished unit. now i just press abit harder usin my nails, so its kinda ok. guess have to adapt la til it bcums totally faulty.

mine was damn bad.. but recently it became better. mayb d spring inside became better or mayb d method im pressin is different. now i cover d whole button and press it firmly. success rate is 60%. but compared to my frens 3gs, his one press softly oso can register. i assume its overall ip4 problem. den i figured dat mine is ori unit well taken care of sumore. so better i claim wen d button completely rosak.

but i gotta advise everyone to becareful of ur liquid test paper at d bottom. my fren followed me to claim his 3gs warranty coz his mute button totally condemn. turns out his unit void coz d indicator turned pink although he did not touch any water. must be d humidity and sweat. very furious with maxis but wat to do, its apple's policy. so dats wat im scared of..wen wanna claim time, due to sweat d indicator change color.

i went to Menara Maxis yesterday and got my phone checked. the buggy home button is working 7 out of 10 times and sometimes 3 out of 10 times, depending on its mood.

i was told to go back and get a replacement set tomorrow. saw my friend's replacement/refurbished set, looks like a new one. got my phone on the 1st day of launch last year, guess i'm fine with getting a 'new' set.

Make sure you backup all your data, sync all your apps that you purchased through the Appstore via iTunes and once you receive your "new" iPhone, restore the backup to the new set.

I think the only way to invoke iPhone from sleep is to touch a hardware button. My guess is the touch screen is completely dead when sleep. So I don't think Activator can do that.

everything works fine now. loving my 'new' set. activated multi gesture to avoid pressing the home button.
maxis users, just go get a replacement set, it looks brand new irregardless if it's refurb set or not.

How much would repairing the button cost?
I don't think it's smart to use activator when ur home button is spoilt, come one...ur using a phone that cost 2k....
Activator is an extra and not meant to be used when ur home button is faulty.

P/s: just repair it laugh.gif

Visit local mobile shop or repair shop change the indicator.

So far I get quote for rm200 to change the indicator or rm150 to change button.

Make sure that maxis did not record your set as water damage in their system. If there is record, its no point to change the water sensor indicator. I think you won't be able to claim.
Better do the button repair.
Just my opinion ya. smile.gif

Faulty speakers/mic, volume/mute button malfunction, camera flash not working, camera not working. I just claimed my new Iphone as well due to the home button. Saw their system with those symptoms with other people.

maybe u can try ur luck to claim the warranty but as far as i know the local telco will only justify to give u the replacement unit if it is proof that the sleep/wake/home button is damage..if just 'tik tak tik tak' but still working perfectly i dont think u can claim for the replacement unit. icon_rolleyes.gif

My home button is getting worst. Need to press very hard to operate it..

I went to Maxis @ E-Curve 2 weeks ago and they told me to surrender my iPhone n they will come back to me at least 3 weeks for inspection / replacement.

I cant live without a phone for 3 weeks!!!.. So i went to Maxis @ KLCC last weekend.. they checked and confirm i will get a replacement. But my iPhone was not registered by the maxis MEP to their Maxis server.. So Maxis KLCC need to email the MEP to complete the process. They will call me around Wed when procedure is done. the most important point is i no need surrender my iPhone to them. (unfortunately nobody called me) so tonight i just went to Maxis KLCC to try my luck.

Everything done within 40mins to wait for collection from their store.
Glad with Maxis KLCC service !! Remember to approach them rather to wait them contact you..

Clearly the staff there is just not cooperating. Suggest you be a little bit harsh and stand up firm for replacement, its consumer's right. As reading your quote, you mentioned it got worse after several forces applied by the staff.

Just go Maxis centre again, and complain about incident; and deem for fair inspection on the iPhone. Case yet to close? Speak to their upper management. Good luck.

Yes, thats the first thing on my check list before I send in for warranty.
Warranty void IF they find out about this (not sure whether this still applies).
Another thing is I want NO privacy invasion. Tiba2 insurance xxx call up, saying got your contact from "referrer". What comes out from your mind? Disturbance ! Oh mai

As long as you never show "oh, I have Cydia here" to the staff. To do that, you have to restore. Aren't you somehow concern on the warranty?

rule of thumb, go straight to either KLCC or TTDI branch for home button issues replacement. in most cases, they have replacement sets available & are pretty flexible when comes to intermminent failures. smile.gif

rule of thumb, go straight to either KLCC or TTDI branch for home button issues replacement. in most cases, they have replacement sets available & are pretty flexible when comes to intermminent failures. smile.gif

Agree....I went to KLCC and got my set replaced in less than 3 hours smile.gif

Hi,

How hard is hard? It responses how many times out of 10? If 1/10, less likely you will get a replacement.

for sure its recommend for u to restore the ios before sent to claim warranty(to clear out ur personal data/jailbreak apps).. when u setup the account just insert ur id n password for ur itunes and just follow the setup instructions...should be no problem occur during setup the acc...BTW u can restore back ur data n apps to ur new replacement unit of iphone IF u have done backup before sent the warranty... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Send it to Digi. As long as it is under warranty then you SHOULD NOT send it to any mom & pop repair shop.

A miracle happens to me, I happens to face this Home button issue.

It's in-responsive and sometime does not recognize when I double-press it.

1 fine day, I accidentally dropped the phone.

And the issue resolved by itself. I'm just lucky I think.

Hi there, I got a problem with my phone home button. The button seems like 'sink' into the phone. When I press it, it dint function. I need to press it very very hard and deep then only it works.

May I know if this is a common problem for iPhone 4? Where can get it fix? How much will the 'fix' cost? Thx.

Its a common problem for iphone 4. You can claim for warranty if its still under warranty or just get it repaired in hp shops. I can help you if you need assistance. Other questions related to it please post at the abve given link.

I noticed that my iphone home button became less responsive after I accidentally dropped the phone. What is the possibility that Digi is willing to replace it cos the problem is intermittent. I have about 3 mths warranty left.

Are refurbished set reliable?

I noticed that my iphone home button became less responsive after I accidentally dropped the phone.  The problem is intermittent though. What is the possibility that Digi is willing to replace it?  I have about 3 mths warranty left..

i totally agree with WimpyKid, before this i accompany my friends to claim his replacement unit at maxis sunway pyramid for non responsive home button...during fair test they not justify it as failure home button n dont want to give replacement unit...it shock me a bit...1 day after that i bring him to claim the warranty at maxis klcc and the staff r so professional in checking the home button n have given my friend the replacement unit.he just need to wait for 2 days only...no wonder maxis sunway pyramid in the last place.. nod.gif

Actually I went and replace mine they didn't even look at the warranty card. From the IMEI they have record already.

Also, the dude at Maxis Centre KLCC was very helpful. He asked me whats the problem I said home button not responsive he straight away understood and he changed it for it. No questions asked. He knows its a common problem.

i dont think so...different telcos different policy mate..for example, digi require the 1st owner to bring along the service card and their ic coz the warranty cover under the 1st owner only...only the 1st owner can claim the warranty..celcom i have no idea..

Example below:

5K normally means refurbished unit. A4S means black iPhone 4 16GB.

Else, check your serial no. details here: http://goo.gl/wS0Xv

Enjoy!

Sorry for discussing out of topic guys, but i need some clarification.

Mr. greenlp_87,regarding your above comment,i thought US iphones is always locked sets, coz if u want to buy online from US apple store or buy over there,u must choose either AT&T or Verizon?that is why they create the unlocks(pwnagetool,sn0wbreeze)in the first place coz they want to use iphones paired with other service provider like Sprint..iphones in out of US is always unlocked sets coz there are many service providers..please correct me if i'm wrong

i think it's software related issue that causes the home button being not responsive..it looks like hardware problem, but i do think it's software problem..

before sending your phone for warranty claim, try this on your phone..hold the power button (on top of the phone) until the "SLIDE TO POWER OFF" screen comes out..now, press the home button repeatedly with normal pressure (not too hard) for 30 seconds..after the 30 seconds have elapsed, the "SLIDE TO POWER OFF" screen will self-cancel, bringing you back to your homescreen. after that, your home button might work..

i don't know if it will work on you guys..but it did work for me..

cheers...

So for warranty claims, only 2 places have a chance of replacing the phone on the same day?
1. Maxis KLCC
2. Maxis TTDI

Update : Yes I got to replace my iphone 4 for the button problem. They know it's a widespread problem. He asked for my warranty card, confirmed imei number in settings and even opened read my sim tray to verify IMEI.

It looked brand new, flawless physically right down to shiny factory fresh back with clear plastic sticker you got when you bought the phone. No accessory requested, no need box, they only took just the phone. It came in a plastic black box, not in a new iphone box.

I only realized it was a refurbished unit when I proceeded to download twitter and a prompt for password for Apple ID of its previous owner came up. Kantoi.

The RMA clause did mention (forgot where I read it) says that they reserve the right to replace with a new or refurbished set, so don't bother to go questioning them about it if you wanna do an RMA. If a refurbished set is this flawless, then I don't mind. If it wasn't for the Apple ID prompt I'd have believed it was new.

Try this:

1.) Open any application
2.) Press and hold the power button until the slide to shutdown swipe bar appears.
3.) Release Power button
4.) Press and hold Home button lightly until screen returns to icon screen
5.) Enjoy your functioning home button!!!

This procedure recalibrates the home button after normal wear or heavy use.

Most of the home button issues is cost by hardware failure. The part that need to be replaced is called membrane switch or some may called it home flex.

Recalibrating does not work. smile.gif

I called Maxis CS and complaint about the button. It seems that the CS is aware of the issue and advise me to go to Maxis Center.

He recommended Maxis Center Kamunting Taiping. I went there and, they say no stock. What the hell.

Maxis Center oso no stock. Better close and open KFC la..zz
