Anyone have any experience or info on the above? According to 1 of the forum posts in ACRyan, their staff mentioned the below:

http://www.acryan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=895

For us, the PlayOn!HD is better than the Xtreamer for some reasons :

- 24p mode is working as well (not on Xtreamer right now)
- M2TS play well (not on Xtreamer right now)
- support 2TB HDD (500GB max on Xtreamer)
- Subtitles are playing well (not for all on Xtreamer)
- BD ISO will be played on PlayOn!HD (not actualy on Xtreamer)
- Card reader (not on Xtreamer)

Damn if this thing is as good as it sounds, I'm sold! cool2.gif

My friend help me to bought it from SG while it launch in June. I just updated the firmware and now support chinese subtitle for ts file. Chinese subtitle for mt2s still not support. They claim it will supprt BD-iso from the future firware updating. There will be another firmware updating release in august which make the player to support True HD and DTS Ma sound encoding pass through. So far it play all the file i have including RMVB so i think is much better than WDTV. There still have some minor issue for the player but i think the proboem can be solve through future firmware updating.

I bit the bullet and ordered from Singapore store. Total price was SGD242.65 (after PayPal conversion RM611.25) including shipping to Malaysia.

Hopefully the ketam dun kacau...sweat.gif

Anyways, it's all out of stock from ACRyan themselves and in SG stores. Mine will only ship in early August. I doubt U can find it in Malaysia shops as of now.

I think the only reason to go for this instead of the Xtreamer is the *promised* BD ISO support. I think it is also very likely the Xtreamer will support this in the future, if they want to be competitive. The Xtreamer looks like good value, esp with the free Wifi antenna.

Yup, I believe those features will be added in on the incoming patches so having a reliable brand on the media player is very important.

Unless the BD ISO support needs hardware upgrade
I think the Xtreamer will most likely add this feature in the future firmware upgrade

I've already ordered and paid. Now awaiting delivery...

Snippet from 1080p MKV playback:

The first movie I tested was an old favourite of mine, The Fifth Element Re-mastered 1080p.mkv, this movie has an excellent section which seriously tests contrast, colour saturation, lag, ‘Jaggies’ and bit rate handling. It’s the part where the 5th element steps out onto the ledge, looks down on the flying highway and then the drops into Bruce’s taxi cab. Just that section alone can expose a multitude of sins on a weak player, and the pursuit and chase after she lands can even make the most respected player melt its solder points from the processor heat.
Running at Full 1080p/24, 30Mbps and a bit rate of 1509 kbps, it sure did put this player through its paces.
However, the colours held true and the contrast had the deepness I would expect without any adjustment to the panel settings. I could see no motion lag, stutter, ‘Jaggies’, blocking, micro blocking, colour bleed or anything else that would have made me think that I wasn’t actually running the original from disc, rather than a backup I made streaming across my LAN.

And here's a from the section on BDMV playback:

It was time now to move onto another format, a straight blu-ray dump of Quantum of Solace in its original directory structure and with Full HD audio sound streams as well.
The file format for blu-ray dumps is .m2ts and on occasions I have seen a few players struggle with this format, though of late this is becoming less frequent.
Upon loading the file, the Dolby TrueHD light lit up on my receiver and upon checking the info screen displayed by the player, it stated that it was using the said format. Again the player had no issues with video reproduction and was running in the correct format of /24 - which is the way I like it. I could clearly hear the 6th and 7th speaker kick in and become part of the surround, so thumbs up here!
Video playback was smooth and performed as well, if not better than a player twice its price. It handled the 38 Mbps frame rate and 768 kbps bit rate effortlessly.

I calibrated an AC Ryan thru a Panasonic S10 a few weeks ago. I also calibrated a Dvico thru a Panasonic X10 last week. From a calibration point of view they are both the same. WDTV on the other hand has issues with the colour space conversion.

Edit:
After relooking at the calibration results, the AC Ryan does have oversaturated greens and cyans but I believe this is a result of the S10. I will have to check this out again when I have the chance.

Wow bro, you always seem to come to my rescue hahaha... How bout AQ? Seems the same for both?

If both have the same PQ & AQ, then i guess this is a much better player as it plays RMVB.. Any downside of this player compared to Dvico?

kelvin you should quickly go and grab them at 229.
Over at the official website it is selling at EU99+EU20(for shipping), that's about S$245.3
Xtreamer mentions in their website that they provide a profit margin of such " Average Sale Amount: $200
Commission: 10%
Average commission= $20"
you have just spotted a pot of gold thumbup.gif

Seriously, if U wanna buy a FULLHD capable player but only wanna use the TV and no amp, might as well don't use it lah.

But then again, DTS downmix confirmed coming on 15 Aug firmware update. tongue.gif

hmn..after conversion about RM600.. seem good. can drop by SG soon.

anyway.. anyone know how does playon DVr Tv compares with playon HD besides the recording capabilities?
Was keen to have the recording feature to record some astro content.
But after some research, seem that the DVR tv is using a different chipset and it older generation. Not sure it the performance is on par with the newer playon HD.
some review seem to give playon hd pretty good rating but not as good for the DVR TV. anyone expert can shed some light?

anyway, during my research, i notice something interesting.
there is a china made player which look very similiar to the playon Dvr TV but almost half the price.

check this out, look at the back panel.. look the same to me.

Guys,
I just got my brother in Singapore to get me a unit of this media player in Carrefour, at the price of SGD237 (after a 5% from the orginal price of SGD249). At the conversion rate of RM2.4 to SGD1, it is slightly less than RM570. I will hook it up to my 1 TB WD MyBook loaded with MKV's for a start. I intend to stick in a 1 TB drive. What would be your recommendation?

Wokay, I will post a little FR next week, based on my collection of MKV files when I get it over the weekend. Eventually, I hope to have it play BD-ISO from my friend's collection, so I really hope that this player can handle it. I will be displaying it on my Panny 50V80H which I bought from Htkaki.

I wonder why no incoming stocks in KL but there seems to be plenty in Spore.

Horny,
It's stated that this player will handle HD DTS MA in the next firmware upgrade this month, although I won't be enjoying it. I am going to hook it up to my old Pioneer DTS AV-AMP nia.

Bro Barry, the player does not support BDMV or BD ISO as of now. It is a *promised* feature in upcoming firmware.

It does support RMVB up to 720p. Internal HDD is 3.5" type but is not included. It can support up to 2TB size.

The next firmware release will be on Aug 15 which will downmix DTS to stereo. Right now it can only pass-through.

If not mistaken U are the same Taikor Barry from Penang that recommended me to AVE in Chai Leng Park back in 06 right?

Stupid question from a stupid man here, so I hope you don't mind indulging me please.

What are BD-ISO and BD-MV? What are the differences and what sizes do they come? I know that a typical BD title is anything between 35 and 50gb, so does it mean that these files will be of such sizes? Thanks.

BD-Iso is sort of like having a 'visual BD' with all its original function. Yes the file will be large so if the BD is 45GB then that BD-Iso will be 45GB. No sure what is BD-MV as I am quite 'banana' also. blush.gif

basically BD-iso is the exact data of blu-ray disc minus the plastic physical disc.. it resides as a digital copy on your HDD..

BDMV is a main movie folder which contains the main movie files of the BD-ISO/Blu-ray disc..

No la, Coffee. My brother brought it back for me when he drove in from Spore on Saturday. I have not flown in and out of Spore for a very long time.

Now, a little FR on the unit over a few hours yesterday evening, displaying it on my Panny 50" plasma (50v80h). Very easy to set it up - HDMI into the TV no problem at all. Audio came out from 1 of the 2 coax outputs, leaving me with a spare coax and a optical toslink - no problem with my old Pioneer AV-Amp for DTS and AC-3 digital signals.

The picture, however needed a lot of adjustments. I don't have any tools, except by my 'butt-o-meter' based upon the earlier setting done by htkaki (using VDE) but nothing done on the colours. I am still not very happy with the colours and brightness/contrast so I shall need help, hoping that htkaki will be able to help out. The GUI is very easy to use, although I have yet to try out all the features. I am not sure how useful the wireless streaming will be, and I have yet to stick in a hard-disk. I have a bunch of FLAC files and plan to rip all my CDs into this format so this baby will become my main media player.

they give back you goods tax but not services tax
SGD229 is about SGD13.

The GUI is very easy to use, although I have yet to try out all the features. I am not sure how useful the wireless streaming will be, and I have yet to stick in a hard-disk. I have a bunch of FLAC files and plan to rip all my CDs into this format so this baby will become my main media player.

No problem with 1080p MKV files, Kelvin. Doesn't seem to have problem playing full HD files. And when BD ISO files are finally playable, it will be perfect.

Hi all, I noticed some ppl mentioned possibility of lag during playback for movies with 1080 output, 720 no problem on their WDTV.

This PlayOn got this issue? Anyone can comment?

moomoos,
Sorry, no got Dvico to compare with. This my first HD media player, and so far I am very pleased with it.

After a few hours of fiddling with the settings on my ACR and my plasma, the picture looks very pleasing indeed. The colours are beautifully rendered based on my aging eyes. 1080p mkv's play smoothly with an occasional lag during fwd skips. I am now not sure if I want to play BD ISO files considering that my plasma is only HD Ready and that these files are humongus in size. For those without AV amps to decode DTS, the HDMI output will produce down-mixed audio to your TV. One thing I find lacking in this player (donno about other players) is that it does not allowing you to do any scaling. It is either set to 4:3 or 16:9, unlike the soft player like my favourit BS Player.

My PC is running out of space.. so I bought 1TB last month..
Im using that harddisk as a buffer for my download folder before extracting them..
So, I need to get another harddisk for this player.. Realizing that this player can play movies streaming from my PC smoothly, I defer my plan to next month lar. Raya neh nak pakai duit lagi lorr.. hoho!

if it can play M2TS properly (with proper audio track selection) maybe still can salvage it's functionality.. for the time being.. smile.gif

HD audio able to recognize selection and support? (to bitstream it to AVR)

as for many M2ts, if it's smart it will try to select the largest or next largest file, instead of start from the first M2TS..

moomoos,
Sorry, no got Dvico to compare with.

*
If it can't do scaling then the viewable area will look small right ? Can only see big black bar on top and bottom for 16.9? shocking.gif
Anyone tried to do scaling ? hmm.gif

Ok, just played with the unit briefly. My first impression of it is that it is huge! It is about 2 WDTVs placed facing each other. Also the built quality of it is a bit on the lower end. The front panel of PlayOn looks cheap compared to the WDTV. Otherwise the built is quite solid and so are the jacks on the back. The remote is better than the WDTV is it is more comfortable held in the hand because of its larger size, but it has a very bright and annoying blue LED light whenever any key is pressed. On handling media files, I tested with Knowing BDMV and it didn't work as expected, but it was able to play the m2ts flawlessly with audio changing. I don't have an AVR right now so I am not sure if it will passthrough HD audio but according to the manual if HDMI RAW is selected in the menu it will. My unit is from the 2nd batch with the DTS downmix firmware and I can confirm that indeed does work. Also, it was able to playback a problematic mkv which hung and stuttered on the WDTV. That was all I manage to test tonight. Will further explore more tomorrow night when I have the time.

So, from my 15 minute hands-on, its thumbup.gif thumbup.gif for the PlayOn!HD. smile.gif

the RMVB free codecs used for PC software.. MPC etc.. they are not optimized.. heard if used with Real IC hardware the PQ can be pretty good..

anyway they are limited to stereo only sound.. but interesting cos 3 HD movies can pack into one DVD-R..

For transfering DATA to HDD, pls use Esata. USB is wayyyy too slow for transfering GBs nowaday.

P/S: I am using Vantec ESATA/USB Dock, anyone using the dual dock model?

Testing few more M2TS in BDMV stream folder, RMVB and MKVs now... biggrin.gif

- Transformers M2TS gave "unknown audio format" error for track 1 (no sound), the rest of the 5 tracks changes ok
- Kill Bill Vol 1 gave "bitstream error", cannot play at all
- Fast & Furious plays flawlessly with all 4 track changes ok
- Tested another mkv which will not seek or resume on WDTV, plays, seeks, resumes ok on PlayOn
- RMVB works flawlessly
- MP3 plays as well (this is no brainer, but I just wanted to confirm biggrin.gif)

End of today's 15-minute test.

Just called these guys at Advance Tech. They say that they will be bringing their first batch of 10-20 units mid-Sep, selling at RM1199 but comes with a 1TB Samsung drive - not sold without the hard disk. I got mine from Spore through my brother for around RM570 without the hard disk. Planning to whack in a 1.5TB Samsung disk for around RM365 which is still cheaper by a few hundreds but with 50% more disk space.

Anyone interested to get it quick should give them a call. Otherwise, just wait until the inevitable and eventual lower prices.

Taken from SG Hardware Zone forums, posted by ACeRyan who is an employee of A.C.Ryan:

The development for Bluray support is already in stages, our Playon!HD can already support .M2TS container format right out of the box, and now it supports PGS subtitles with the latest firmware. The next big thing to come would be the support for Bluray ISO or a direct 1-1 ripped of your Bluray disc. These development needs time to program and diagnose. But rest assured it will be delivered in future firmware releases.

and another reply

We will also receive new SDKs from Realtek which promises of new features, support or bug fixes. The next one that we are going to develop on will be the pass-through support of the TrueHD and DTS-HD MA cores, Bluray ISO and menu support, just to name a few.

chewkl or someone who can help,

i have just upgraded my ac ryan with the latest firmware (r1402) which is supposed to be able to handle subtitles changes - Add subtitles position (up, down) and font size (left-decrease, right-increase). But I don't seem to be able to do so from my remote control. Have you tried it? Can anyone share with me how to adjust the subtitle font size and position in the screen?

Thanks.

Bro Barry, the subtitle size / move can only be done for external subs like .srt files. It won't work for m2ts PGS subtitles. Not sure if internal subs in mkv can be resized or moved though...

WDTV can go play far far. Don't even have HDMI 1.3. biggrin.gif
Dvico is an established player in the market. Why do U think they can command a high price?
ACRyan and Xtreamer are newcomers to the playing field. Basically both are the same on the inside as they are using the same Realtek chipset. Difference is only on their customized firmware. There are also a lot of other companies coming up with their own players based on the same 1073DA/DD Realtek chipset.

WDTV can play most of the mkvs and output to 1080P even it DO NOT have HDMI v1.3. Is that a big problem? To me its not as most of the bluray rip in mkvs do not requires HDMI1.3. Its something good to have but don't really matter if you do not have.

Bro Chew,
The latest fw is absolutely working well on the subtitles, and we dont even need to have ext srt files for that! I think, after the fw upgrade, we need to reboot the player for it to take effect. Arrow Up/Dn keys to move the subtitles up/down, and left/right keys to increase or decrease the font size.

How much is this flighbox pro selling for? If it is the exact same box from china, but at usd100, then it is worth buying considering that it will play bd-iso.

I hope I did not give you the impression that I was talking about Himedia300 (I think it is a DVD drive + HD media player product - and I find it strange that those who want to buy media player would want to use it to watch DVD when 99% users have a standalone DVD).
I cannot remember which floor but I really see the real thing on the shelf - not just one shop, but I think it's better that you buy it during COMEX on 11 Sept, normally there will be at least a 10% discount - say, S225 after discount.

it is not just 1%, I think they have revised it to that of the Credit Card level - that's why the public created a big hoohah when nets announced the news, and shops in SLS have started charging customers that extra portion as they do to credit card buyers, of course they then offer discount for those using cash - that's why when buying things there, must ask vendor if they give a discount if using cash - normally they will say ok and give you a few dollars discount

Let me be frank...

1 - Cannot bitstream HD audio
2 - Does not support BDMV / BD ISO

A new firmware coming out in Oct will resolve the above 2 issues. Other than that, flawless. thumbup.gif

And why am I selling it since both issues will be resolved next month? Let's just say I bored with it and looking at something else. biggrin.gif

Any takers? whistling.gif

Hi Guys, read this from Hi-Jack, mpcclub, regarding new M6600:

Feel it's ok the player is more expensive than the usual RRK based players (yuou will see why when you get it) but double that amount is a bit much... We hope eventually the prices will drop somwhere to MAX €249 (which is what we recommend officially to do)...

Display
Big Cooler
Fully tuned interfaced
NFS + SMB (and both work as well

The 6600 will be more mature than the players we have seen so far on the same chip. They are kind of ina luxury position as the 6500 can do BD and does all the other forumat so they are not in a hurry like the others...

We'll see.... Although not fully stable on all parts, (we have fully reviewed the unit already and just wait with the release following updates until the player is officially released), it will be the best realtek based player so far (not the most affordable though).

Hopefully DViCo will bring down the price a little as it needs that to be competitive.

Hi Guys, try not to order player from outside Malaysia thru internet because you will get into problem when they send to you. It is not because the money but the time you have to spend. according to custom law, this player is subjected to 35% + 5% tax rclxub.gif . Uncle chewkl is lucky, pay 10% only.

Faced a few issues after update:
1. Occasionally, when you start playing a file there is no audio. Either have to use "Go to" function to skip a bit, or stop and play again.
2. Chinese characters not showing up...it's just blank.extension where there used to be a filename.
3. Not sure what the Media Library function is for - can't seem to find any media. Maybe doesn't work for videos or have to use internal drive.

On the plus side:
1. Fast forwarding is a lot smoother and doesn't jump to frames.
2. USB logo used instead of the ! previously when indicating USB connection.
3. No problems with subtitles (only tried on MKV files with soft-coded subs).

Update at your own risk I guess. tongue.gif

agreed! they've came up with so many firmware updates over the recent weeks...it seems every week or so there's a new firmware...other media players oso like this?

cant they like bundled everything in one go?

and still not release the DTS downmix firmware...

Your mean PlayOn!HD still no DTS downmix? Because it uses Realtek 1283 chip. But TViX M6600A already got DTS downmix. Too bad. Just bought 1 M6600A from C-zone, quality is fantastic. Will buy PlayOn next week at The Hub also to compare.

Not shown on the box. On the unit itself can know.

1 blue LED line on the bottom = 1073DA
1 blue PlayOn!HD LED on the bottom = 1073DD

Like I said a million time before, DTS WORKS OUT OF THE BOX. If U connect to AVR lagi no issue. The only issues now is that it cannot bitstream any HD audio...need to wait for the new firmware in Oct. Also I have to admit the firmware right now is still pretty buggy. Think of it as in its teething period. biggrin.gif

Both are using the Realtek chipsets, similar like the Dvico M6600. According to the sources, those manufacturers already can bitstream HD audio in their own firmwares. The problem is Realtek does not have the license with Dolby and DTS to allow that right now. Realtek will be releasing their 2.0 SDK in Oct which has this feature enabled. This is for ACRyan and Xtreamer, not sure about Dvico though.

SDK2.0 will work on DA and DD chips. tongue.gif

There are a lot of licensing issues between Realtek and DTS. DA chips cannot downmix DTS, that's just 1 example.

BTW, can Dvico M6600 bitstream HD audio right now?

6600A and 6600N both use Realtek 1283. A is budget and N with built in card reader and wireless N and AVC HD Camcorder with navigator enable. other function all same. I hv A and it works perfectly and look elegant.

C200 come without Bluray ROM. I heard it got bluray region problem also. Some how sigma SDK support really poor. That is why realtek come up and overtake sigma in the market now. So, sigma need to prove that they can support well or it may die just like that. Now, C200 and HDI 3.0 use the latest 8642/3 only. Not a good sign.

1. C200 come without BDrom so you can buy other BDroms and plug in like the LG x6 writer.. or if you prefer run twin 3.5" HDD in side the case.

anyway, what's wrong with 8642/3? u mean lousier than realtek izzit?

have you tried a Dune 1.0 before?
have you tried DVICO 6500 before

all uses sigma designs running at only 300MHz.. also can play BD-ISO/BDMV with Java (dune) and basic BDMV (6500 with BD-lite)

realtek can't even bitstream lossless audio now (have to wait for SDK 2.0 as per chew's comment) let alone read BD-ISO.. or play Java.. you think any hope to be a BD media streamer (high end requirement)? at best it's just a mid range RMVB+MKV player..

new Sigma designs 8642/3 and 55 chipset is 500-667MHZ.. that's roughtly twice as powerful as before...

Its not cheap but its a solution that xtreamer n acryan cant provide for some of the requirements that i want yet. That said i will still need a 1073 player so will still get one of these..
If c200 is twice the price of ac then 6600 price how?

Nothing wrong with sigma. what i mean is sigma fully support on Bluray player manufacturer but respond slow for the DMP manufacturers. That is why Dvico came out with their own RFX to decode and debug the problem they face. But this cause their firmware update slow and blame by consumers.

Don't think that Realtek made in Taiwan is bad. Actually they are coming up becuase of sigma given the chances, the poor support on SDK for DMP manufacturers. I have tested 6600A and the output colour as good as 8635. Even my AV installer confirmed that. Btw, until now, for colour handling, TViX still the best among other media players. I think because of their firmware developed. The start time 28 seconds only compare with 6500 take about 1 minute 20 seconds. Flash RAM 1283 is 128MB and dvico can write more compare with 8635 64MB flash RAM.

pls take note that 8655 is lower end then 8642/3, even 1283. Don't be confuse.

If sigma cannot fast respond on SDK, so what for 8642/3? Can't u see that C200 suppose to be launched on end of July but until now.... sweat.gif

err. who's confused? if I already mention 500-667MHz means I' aware that 8642-8655 operate in this range la..

anyway, results speak more than just talk, show me a BD-iso + Java playing realtek 1073 product if you say it's as good as 8635 (must have same full function as Dune 1.0 or dune 3.0 or C-200) , and I'll get it... am not against realtek but if it's not as good or same league as dune/C-200 means not good enuf for my next replacement player..

looks like most of the complaints is due to gigabit lan connection playback.. anyway I don't do that.. run from int' HDD..

being able to play BD-ISO+JAVA (reduced function in certain conditions, like running off the NAS/LAN/USB, which will require future firmware tweaking) is better than not able to do it at all for something that costs the same price range (i.e 6600)... IMHO... hmm.gif

Added on September 23, 2009, 7:23 pmthanks to reading the mpcclub forum on the dvico, 6600 got no gigabit lan.. so how to play BDMV smoothly via network?? wah?? 100/10 or 11n can meh?

This is due to 1283 limitation. u don't know meh??? doh.gif Xtreamer and PlayOn!HD also same, 10/100. But 6500 also play BD-Lite without problem thru 10/100 (6500 is 10/100). Actually I tested with 2 6600 access simultaneously into Thecus NAS N0503 playing a same very high-bitrate (about 40Mbps) file together without any stutter. Fantastic. heard Dvico promised to develop BD-lite in 6600 also and can handle even better then 6500 becuase Flash RAM is double up. We will see... brows.gif

No it doesn't make sense. There is no movie out there with either Deep Colour or xvYCC.

Handle the colour of video? I'm wondering if he means colour space conversion? Or colour decoding errors? Or ? Not sure thats why I ask.

I have calibrated thru a ACRyan and a DVICO M7000, so I know what the problems associated to each one are, I want to understand what he means before commenting.

I dunno, if I were into color I'll start with a hi quality video source like BD..  not use highly compressed files like MKV... biggrin.gif
