Since this laptop is a hotseller I might as well make its own thread to guide smile.gif

ASUS k40AB specification:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

k50AB is similar but it have bigger 15.6" LCD and full sized keyboard with numpad

Regarding heat on this laptop

There are no such thing as heat issue, high heat (60-80C) is normal on laptop because its restricted size and the amount of transistor and speed it have, because the suface area of the laptop and limited space, its hard to put full fledged heatsink on it, so laptop components are designed to handle higher temperature than desktop while at the same time consume as little power as possible

You can change the BIOS setting to just use the HD 4570 instead of switching between the onboard one, change from 'Power Xpress' mode to 'dGPU'

If you have difficulty installing XP, read this guide

Driver download:

Download latest driver for K40AB/K50AB from ASUS here

Download Mobility HD 4570 driver DNA modded driver or ASUS site
DNA is a modded driver to support all Mobility cards, since AMD/ATi doesn't bother with them for no reason
This laptop support advanced PowerXpress, which disables discreet GPU and run the onboard when not gaming
Additionally if you are more advanced user you can opt not to install CCC (Catalyst Control Center) and install ATi Tray Tools. Its much lighter and provides with more setting to play with

The latest mobility modder already support HD4XXX series so you can download normal Catalyst and mod it

If you want to overclock HD4570, use AMD GPU clock tool v0.9.26.0

Download AMD Overdrive here
Overdrive is mainly used for changing memory timings, since it can't allow to overclock on k40AB

Download k10stats from here
k10 stats is used for downclock or downvolt your CPU to get the most from its batteries and reducing temperature when you just browsing
Some k10stat setting:
For idle I suggest reduce the voltage to 0.9V, I get under 50C when browsing with it
For load 1.05V is good, I'll try to test at lower voltage, but your result may vary (I can reach 1.0375V)

How to use k10stats

Download AMD Fusion from here
Fusion is used to reduce system process when gaming, reducing CPU overhead and freeing up memory so you get the most from your system when gaming

Tweaks:

Tweaking Media Player Classic (K-Lite codec) for video watching here

LCD scaling problem can be minimized by following this guide and DNA driver

k40AB can get pretty toasty when running games, here is the hot spots on it:
Attached Image
Red color is the main heatsink to cool all three major heat source( the CPU, chipset and the discrete GPU) the orange one is the CPU and chipset is located (GPU is under the red area), the slightly dimmer orange on the far left is where the power connector is, this can get warm when you use the power adapter and lastly the yellow area is the harddisk, rather warm

SRS Premium Sound tweaks:
Put the 'Content' to music, 'Output' to Notebook Speaker, predefined audio to SRS Premium, click Options > Advanced control and adjust to these:

SRS Definition: 10% (mids brightness)
SRS TruBass: 50%
SRS TruBass Speaker Size: Small
SRS 3D Center: 75% (vocal)
SRS 3D Space: 100% (instruments, soundstage)
SRS Focus: 25% (sound focus)

Battery life: 2 hours 10 minutes in normal situation, if you undervolt to 0.9V using k10stats and force it to run 1.05GHz, it will squeeze 25 minutes more battery, plus the reduction of temperature around 8-10C *tested by hanz08*

Benchmarks/games experience:

3DMark06 default score: 3047 3DMarks (Catalyst 9.7 )
Command and Conquer Kane's Wrath: playable at 1366x768 everyting on High detail
Call of Duty 2: Playable at 1366x768 2xAA with High detail (no shadows)

*If the games you play feels sluggish, reducing shadows will give HUGE boost in performance*

Recommended resolution to play games is 1024x600, 1280x720 or 1280x768, 1366x768 is too high and this GPU is too slow for it. Overclocking can give a boost in framerate

Crysis/ Warhead is hard to run on ANY system, I found it performs well at Mainstream/ Medium detail at 1280x720 or 1280x768

Here is one of my custom config that playable at 1280x768 (set it everything to Low/Minimum before putting this (make a new text documents, paste it and rename autoexec.cfg)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

My reviews on it:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Windows 7 Windows Experience Index:
CPU: 4.7
RAM: 5.0 (1x2GB RAM) or 5.2 (3GB)
Graphics: 4.2 (4.5 when overclock 720/615)
Game Graphics : 4.5 (5.4 when overclock 720/615)
HDD: 5.3

Still the same, even compatibility mode to Vista or XP won't work. What with this Wprime thing anyway?

Thats funny, ok nevermind. smile.gif

To test the multi core CPUs performance, the speedier the less time it takes, e.g i7 can complete the test in 8 secs. Normal C2D need 25 secs like that.
*
To tell you the truth I never bother with the prime thing, it never reflect the real world performance

Crysis config file added, it still needs some tweaking but it still playable enough

You can run both at the same time. CCC is easy for me if you know what to do, I can't really tell whether it would be better for you, you can try it. Both are similar only the ATT is lighter than CCC (its placed on tray, hence the name), plus it have more (advanced) option too

Athlon QL-64 clocked at 2.1ghz while Turion Rm74 clocked at 2.2ghz.
Other then that, Athlon have 2 P-state while Turion have 3, which make it benefit more from the amd CnQ technology.

QL-64 clockspeed is 2.1GHz, support DDR2-667 and don't have virtualization
RM-74 clockspeed 2.2GHz, up to DDR2-800 and have virtualization

Yes Studio 15 have similar GPU, but faster GDDR-3 memory (IIRC) and uses Intel CPU

I'll post some screenies soon, will keep you guys updated smile.gif

#Najmod: Congrats on your opening of this threads, I'm sure this k40ab WOULD GET VERY HOT here (pun very much intended tongue.gif )

About the fusion part, I bet you wouldn't notice any different in the futuremark score but it did help to achieve better framerates in games and reduce stuttering as well.

P0 or P1? If you just browsing, click P1 and select both core0 and core1, reduce the Vcore to 0.9V and apply. If you want to run games select P0 and both its core and select apply. This way you can save the power more, since in desktop it would be limited to 1.05GHz no matter what the load is

Ohh yeah, I do aware that this lappie is quite hot under heavy load, but how about the volume? When idle does the voice emission noticeable, and while under load does the noise become unbearable?

well before i undervolted the cpu battery life for me was 2 hours and 10 minutes. After undervolting i managed to squeeze another 25 minutes out of it, which is good! (credits to Najmods) and the heat went down too by around 8 to 10 degrees. smile.gif when under load the voice emission is not noticeable, fan speed is pretty low so yeah, its perfect for classrooms and quiet ebviroments. hope that helps! biggrin.gif

Great, thanks for your information thumbup.gif
The heat doesn't really concern too much to me compare to loud fan noise, as I hv been use to it already on my rig tongue.gif

Anybody here can clarify whether what this guy say is true or just bull? According to him, it's ok to run your processor at 100'C as long as it's within the thermal specification of the cpu. shocking.gif shocking.gif shocking.gif

The fan is very quiet when running normally, and it only spin up if it reaches 80C and up IIRC

Regarding the thermals, that guy got a point. CPU are made with different process, different amount of transistor and there is A LOT of variable that we don't know, so it varies between CPU. I'll read more regarding the topic and will post what I found here.

EDIT: From this page the maximum operating temperature is 100C

(credits to Najmods) and the heat went down too by around 8 to 10 degrees. smile.gif when under load the voice emission is not noticeable, fan speed is pretty low so yeah, its perfect for classrooms and quiet ebviroments. hope that helps! biggrin.gif
*
No problem biggrin.gif I'll put that info on the first page for future reference. I never use the battery for more than few minutes because I don't like to use them tongue.gif

Lowyat Plaza of course, hunt around, you'll find it, ask the exact model, if they look puzzled, leave immediately, they don't know it

There are no program to set its fan speed, I'll check again if its in the driver CD, WEI score and temperature on the first post, read it carefully. Maybe others can do the screenies on temperature, I never run the laptop with back cover unless it is really necessary

Hello guys,

I just bought this laptop (ASUS K40AB). Yes the sticker does display ATI RADEON HD 4570.
I've updated with the latest driver.
I checked using GPU-Z, Windows Properties, ATI Catalyst, it says HD 3200.
I've checked using a lot of things but it says my graphics is HD 3200.
What is the problem? Or am I being cheated?

Thanks.

Maybe it's Advancd PowerPlay come into play, try check your CCC and see if you can change to using the discrete card.

#Najmod, can you do me a favour and check how are the 4570 temps in your lappies? does it get as high as the cpu? Sorry for the trouble notworthy.gif

I just got my K40ab from PC City in Kuching last week. Selling price at RM1999 and I add on another 2gb of ram which cost another RM85.

The laptop itself comes with a beg and a mouse other then the laptop and the power cable. PC City was kind enough to throw in a bunch of free gift - notebook cooler, another mouse, lcd protector, lcd cleaner, usb 4-ports hub and keyboard protector. The LCD protector given to me was a 14.4" but can't fit the K40ab cause K40ab screen ratio is 16:9...HD size I suppose. So if you are buying LCD screen protector, do take note of that.

I have a hard time get the HD4570 to show up also, tried a few drivers and it still don't work. CCC 4.5 will make it show up but it some how become extended monitor and I can in no way make it right. But at last I installed driver from ASUS international website and it is working fine. You can switch it with the power express thingy!

How are the operating temps for you? If you feel it's too hot, you could try to downvolt it, and remebr to enable CnQ as well.

CnQ=Cool n Quite, it would downclock your cpu when it's idle, hence use less power and less heat also. Use CPUz and check if your clock speed keep throttling or not.
About the undervolt, a lot of people been doing it and no problem, it's working great for my brisbane too, just be careful and you would be fine.

Go to your power setting or something like that, tick the Balanced Power plan, check your cpuz and see if your clock-speed went up and down. If it does, then it's on, then you could tweak the voltage with K10stat or RMclock.

In Kuching, PC City is the dealer for ASUS. I found out some other shop selling it at a higher price, RM2099. Somemore this modal sorta HOT in Kuching and you actually need to place order, no ready stock because it just finish so fast.

Right click on desktop you should see the PowerXpress setting there, or you can go to CCC (Catalyst Control Center). I having problems with PowerXpress too, my only option is to disable the onboard GPU and just use the HD 4570 alone

No, but you can select between those two

That is the highest I achieve so far, not bothered with anything higher. The limitation is the graphics, not the CPU

Anyway if you need a more powerful number-crunching cpu, den get urself a C2D 2.4ghz+
If you aiming for real-life performance, the hdd speed matter more.

Wow, there are so many people with amd phobia here. doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif
If you handle computer hardware long enough you would realize that most of the time, it's other part like psu, mobo, hdd, gpu failure that spoil the system. System failure due to CPU is very very rare from my experience.
Maybe you can name me a notebook that don't heat up during heavy load, I would like to buy 1 myself too.
Don't forget that it's an asus, NOT acer , with 2 years global warranty too. thumbup.gif

this lappy are available in what proc?ZM84 or RM74?

i see some shop show it available in QL-64?? icon_question.gif

Performance-wise, Athlon Ql-64 and Turion Rm-74 are on par, rm-74 have higher HT-link and 3 P-stat under CnQ but that's it.
While turion Ultra ZM-84 have bigger L2cache, you have to keep in mind that K8 architecture don't benefit as much as intel c2d from bigger cache, It depend more on Hyper-Transport. But seriously, hdd speed matter more in real-life perfromance.

Yeah, AMD phobia is in 2001 or 2002 during Thunderbird era, I don't know why anyone still thinks that way, they forgot the Prescott altogether, it even worse doh.gif

To tell you the truth my cousin have BenQ S41 with that 8600M GS, been using it for a year now, still fine, I give him advice to use it properly, and good thing his laptop still runs fine smile.gif But even though that laptop have 128-bit memory vs HD 4570 64-bit coupled with very slow 500MHz DDR2 memory, I surprised that HD 4570 is faster than that, the 8600M can barely run CnC: KW at 800x600 low detail, I just stunned that HD 4570 can run it on high, at native resolution!

found out this lappy few days ago.. from my bro.. i've been eyeing on cq40-401ax.. well now this model came out.. the price is equally same.. and the GPU certainly attracts me..

reading this topic.. seems troublesome to tweak everything eh.. im not so of a pro..

so this lappy is definitely better then 401ax? full recommendation for it?

btw the game mentioned is CoD 2?? not CoD 4 ah? how does it perform o CoD 4? impossible to run?

the Dell studio 15 is using hd4570 with gddr3 ram, thus shud be faster, but according to TS, the bottleneck would be at the 64bit memory bandwidth rather then the vram, so prolly not much different in the end . If you don't have AMD phobia, i would whole-heartly recommend this model to you.

Haha, yeah, the intel P4 Pres-Hottttt is much worse, actually the whole NetBurst Microarchitecture Suck badly.... After Intel feel the threat from AMD only they start doing something serious, hence the Core Microarchitecture. This prove that where there is competition, there is improvement. biggrin.gif
Just hope AMD could survive, else shit would happen, no more cheap proc. cry.gif

Regarding the 8600M, I read that Nvidia pay several pc-maker and make them release bios that limit the GPU ability and enabling full-running fans to cover their ass. Googling around and you would find lotsa similiar news. I think that's why your cousin's chip haven phailed, this also explain that the 4570 beating it in gaming performance.

regarding the 8600M GS, well, i used to ve a S41 as well, and i can tell u that with the latest BIOS (aka the one that will spin the fan even more) doesn't solve the problem at all...

anyway, 8600M GS was a pretty good card honestly, 3k 3D mark 06 in a 14" at that time is really rare...

the K40Ab is really a steal for those who wants good performance at a low budget... AMD is really the way to go for gaming lappy, juz too bad they dun perform well in the higher-end market of laptops...

It's actually second class. I don't quite believe in the categorisation of GCs into classes, but there you go. And honestly, what do you expect? For 2k, this laptop is comparatively a monster.

What is the lappie you playing? Since you mention it's the same dvd, it's not the game problem then. DL Hwmonitor and check your temp when playing, espcially the gpu.

i use 2 software to monitor heat 1 of them is hwmonitor and another coretemp
both showing max 88oC only......
i don't know why the game automatically closes but maybe i should try upgrading the drivers....

on the left 4 dead game i have tried tweaking the game settings but all still leading to the same result - auto closing...
from lowest to highest all showing the same results
it's kinda strange.....

I had l4d on my desktop with vista ultimate 32 bit and no problem. Your laptop OS is 32 or 64 bit? What's your laptop cpu and gpu, maybe it have bad design or what, try playing other game and if that don crash den maybe it's your l4d problem.

Well, this mean it's not hardware problem and not driver problem too. Try other games and see if it crash, if it doesnt, then i think your just not suitable to play L4D tongue.gif

u got update the game or not???

iirc, the initial release of L4D is poorly optimized for multi-core and thus will crash often... enabling or disabling multicore in options doesn't seem to help at all...

either u update or every time u start the game, alt-tab back to desktop and set to run on 1 core only in task manager...

k50 bigger screen with greater weight... i like laptop with size around 13-14' makes it easy to bring along. But if u like to have big screen one tat usually station on the desk better get desktop... but tis is still up to personal preference some may like big screen some may like small one.

any trouble when using this lappy?

hardware problem?

I've sold this notebook to my friend for RM1989 (not because it's no good, it's just because I sell it) and at first I had some problems with the drivers. Intalling windows was no problem at all. ATI CCC just recognized my graphics as HD 3200 only but not the HD 4570. The solution is I uninstalled the drivers, updated Windows reinstalled drivers and voila! This laptop is the best bargain I've ever seen. Best value per money.

Still to early to tell about hardware problems. Must use it continuously first. But with 2 years of warranty? Peace of mind.

My Compaq amd can reach 90 degree with normal usage like msn and firefox and can reach 95 degree if I play dota...

well K40AB is not so hot but comparable (with original vista settings & Asus driver from CD provided)
idle 60
surfing 60+
movie 80
gaming 90 within 15 minutes

Asus 2 years international warranty is the best answer

Hmm....I'm not sure if all laptop is like this, but when my laptop becomes hot even while surfing (60 celcius liddet), I will open the back...then remove a sheet of dust at the fan there.

After that, it won't be so easily hot anymore...hehe. 2 weeks once do this enough for me lor.

if you undervolt the cpu and use a laptop cooler, you can get the results below
idle 50-53
surfing 55
movie 63+
gaming 70+
note that you won't feel the heat anywhere but only the upper right part of laptop which feels warm.
keyboard, touchpad and palm rest perfectly cool. smile.gif

you can always give it a try, but go slow on it and undervolt a little a time. smile.gif it does help reducing at least a few degrees i think.

i think u can at medium + some high settings. I got bioshock and fallout 3 running at med + some high. smile.gif you just have to do some serious tweaking.

for overclocking try ClockGen for CPU, Rivatuner for GPU, and i8kfangui for Fan speed.

try some googling for the method i dont know much on others cause i'm only using Rivaturner.

What make you THINK that it will melt? doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif Even these pentium M that can reach 110'C never have any problem, your laptop would only melt if there are any faulty part inside, like the notorious G8 series timebomb...
But since you have a high budget, you could look at other higher end modal, imho.

Notepad cooler might able to cool down laptop a bit, depend on the ambient temeprature as air-con room would help too. But all of these are INSIGNIFICANT compare to undervolting, you can reduce the temp by 10-20'C, there are a forumer using TIM with undervolting achieve lower then 30'C idle temp.

I am wondering this K40ab and K50ab can uncrew the bottom cover but not void the warranty?

coz TS unscrew the bottom cover and let it wide open to take more cool air, is the warranty still valid?

I think should be still valid, I had call Dell b4 and they told me the warranty still valid even if we change the  ram or hdd. I expect the same form Asus  biggrin.gif
*
yes still valid. only invalid for the parts you have changed.

But there is one situation where your notebook spoil results of you upgrading you system by our own that one i'm not sure.

haaaa.. u ask astria tongue.gif have u google as alternative?

use K-Lite Codec pack... standard version is gud enuf...

when installing, untick the codec for mkv files, this will use the codec in Media Player Classic instead, then u can get GPU acceleration...

i guess, that's 1 of the way to save cost also, by using PCI-E x8 only...

anyway, for a low end card like HD4570, the PCI-E is not the bottleneck, so dun worry too much abt that...

Hope this little bit does give you some help!  cool.gif

i second the fact that people would prefer laptops to come in freedos rather than preinstalled vista~~ That alone makes the laptop RM300 cheaper! Then again there was this time where a sales guy at a Lenovo shop tried to suck my blood by offering me an installation of pirated Vista for RM200 =.= He must be thinking that I'm some guy that came out of the jungles or something laugh.gif

As here is the K40AB own thread, therefore I wish to ask all "sifu" that same question what I posted in http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1104814,

I am now really interesting to get Asus K40AB, hahaha tongue.gif
I saw a brochure leaflet posted online about PC Show in Singapore (June 2009). They have K40AB with AMD Turion X2 RM-74 (2.2GHz, 800MHz, 1MB L2)/2GB RRR2/320GB HDD/ATI Radeon HD4570 with 512MB dedicated/DVDRW/BT/1.3 WebCam/WIFI/8-in-1 Card Reader

For detail.. http://www.bootstrike.com/itfairsg/pcshow2...ochure-leaflet/

Can I can this model in M'sia as well? How much is the price?
cuz what I know in M'sia only with AMD Athlon X2 QL64 2.1GHz 1MB total L2 cache. blush.gif

So far does anyone experience high temperature with this laptop while playing game?

Will it lag when it reach certain temp? My friend' Compaq v3700(AMD) after playing dota for 30mins even-though gpu temp stay at 81 degree, if no laptop cooler, it can easily hit 90 degree and lag until can't play dota at all.

Thank you for replying to him, I got lazy with all this AMD-hot nonsense, I got tons of PM that I'm too lazy to reply regarding this. Simple answer to guys who afraid of heat-stroke, if you want to play game buy a desktop. Simple as that, buying laptop ALWAYS have a downside, I use my laptop to play old games that I loved, like Red Alert 2, Medal of Honor and Call of Duty

About the processor, you can change it by yourself, if you can find where to buy, and voiding the warranty in the process tongue.gif

AFAIK, it would heat up as well, problem isnt abt amd or intel, problem is the compact size of lappies restrict any effective cooling.

Sorry, notworthy.gif I am asking because I am not very familiar with AMD laptop's performance and most of the time I hear that it is VERY HOT, I don't play heavy games, just l4d or The Sims 3.

Yes I guess so, it can play modern games despite its puny memory bandwidth, it would be better if it got 256MB of GDDR3 memory working at 1GHz. But it did use Samsung memory module, which by my experience is great overclocking potential and usually can exceed its rating by up to 200MHz

planning to get this laptop in da coming pc fair.. haha

so.. actually.. what guidelines should I folo when purchasing it?

for the processor i certainly have no choice rite? its oni available in athlon. by comparison which shud be better between turion and athlon and their performance.

and.. i've been viewing on this thread. and most ppl are undervolting to keep it cooler rite? do i have to use a specific software or just do it thru da bios? everest is mentioned in the posts. and its da oni software that i have.

and about the HD3200 and 3450 thingy im still dont quite understand.. in how to make them show up..

and is it wise to install a pirated vista ultimate? since it comes in freedos..

LOL, Its easier than Vista, pretty much the same but I like 7 more. Its not just the appearance, its lighter and faster than Vista, and all RC is the Ultimate.

I just say to the seller not to bother install anything, I can do everything on my own, even I myself ask so specific that he don't need to ask further question about it.

Its your choice whether you need Vista or you can install anything to your heart desire. One thing I don't like when they install pirated stuff, is they put some unwanted stuff with it, plus I wanted to partition the harddisk to my demand, I usually have 3 partition for my stuff, and they charge extras for it doh.gif

In reality, 7 is much more easier to use, and easier on the computer than Vista. problems on Vista were acknowledged and rectified in 7.

Those who use Vista knows how annoying the UAC can become, and how removable drives did not have the cool blue free space indication in Computer, and how maximizing a window in Vista removes the Aero theme.

Well, 7 fixes all of those, and yeah, I enjoy using it.

Depends on what type of RAM is it.

If the one in the K40AB is faster, and your RAM is slower, it will run slower. And vice versa.

And make sure its DDR2 also.

Its limited to DDR2-667 because of Athlon X2, Turion can go 800, but the speed difference is insignificant. Mine comes with 800MHz, but you can mix memory speeds, which it will run at lowest speeds. You can either use CPU-Z or physically see the RAM module

Checking authencity of Windows? Usually they give the CD AFAIK, at least a recovery CD, but most k40AB is FreeDOS

oh.. so.. the processor determines the speed.. well.. basically da turion will run better with the aid of faster ram but athlon processor runs faster but with a slower ram which makes them even?

a recovery cd as in the windows one? well.. its most probably a freedos.. and when they install.. i wont know if its the ori or pirated one..

does purchasing the laptop come with the driver cd?

No, don't get mixed up, the Turion are supposed to be the 'Phenom' of the laptop, so they are better than Athlon, they have larger cache, more P-States to give better power saving and support for faster memory. Forget about it since it only comes with A64 X2 QL-64 anyway

Most probably they install pirated one, unless you asked for them for OEM one, I don't know how much does OEM costs, maybe RM300-400?

Yes they do give the driver CD, everything comes with driver CD, they don't expect people especially people with zero knowledge of PC wandering around the web looking for driver tongue.gif

well.. rm300-400.. it cost quite a sum eh.. i guess.. im left with pirated vista as choice..

Careful, be clear on your " vice versa " statement. some ppl will thought that if K40AB is slower and the guys ram faster, it will run in faster speed then. which is not true

"RAM will always select and apply slower memory frequency on both memory module"

this is a better statement. System will always run on slower speed if ram modules are found different in speed.

well, Turion is more like the higher end of desktop Athlon, while mobile Athlon is the lower end of the desktop counterpart, to be honest...

AMD still dun ve any K10 mobile CPU till a few mths later, when the Turion II and Athlon II comes out...

anyway, for AMD, the CPU type determines the max RAM speed u can use, since the memory controller is built into the CPU, where for Intel, the FSB of the CPU is the key as memory controller is located on the mobo...

ahh i see.. so those labelled of 667 and 800Mhz in the processor are those indicating the ram speeds.. cool

so from the brochure i gotten from ASUStek in midvalley.. it says 800Mhz so the ram shud be running in 800Mhz.

and ram can be overclocked? according to Someonesim??

and "anyway, for AMD, the CPU type determines the max RAM speed u can use, since the memory controller is built into the CPU, where for Intel, the FSB of the CPU is the key as memory controller is located on the mobo..."

tat means only AMD processor determines the ram speed while Intel processor leaves the job to the motherboard?

and last of all.. it shud be impossible to get a turion version in malaysia rite? probably.. 1% chance?

whichever RAM speed u can use, it's all determined by wat the memory controller supports...

for Intel, it's still going the old way, where the controller is built into the motherboard... so whenever u change CPU, the same type of RAM is still supported... (eg PM45 chipset, it supports DDR2 of up to 800MHz and DDR3 up to 1066MHz iirc, no matter u use C2D or Pentium Dual Core, these RAM still can be used) but for Intel, they go by the FSB (Front Side Bus) way, which u can see as the speed at which the CPU communicates with the RAM... a slow FSB can be limiting the max RAM bandwidth avaliable, and vice versa...

for eg, C2D 1066MHz FSB (real FSB 266MHz), RAM running @ 533MHz DDR (real speed 266MHz) is already sufficient, anything more is fine but wasted since the FSB cannot run as fast unless u overclock... putting in 400MHz DDR (real speed 200MHz) is fine too, but the RAM's speed will become bottleneck instead since it cannot catch up with the FSB... so yeah, dun listen to all the DDR3 bullshit, those are juz marketing gimmik...

for AMD, their memory controller is built into the CPU, so everytime u change the CPU, u re changing the controller as well, those affecting the RAM type that u can use... for Athlon x2, it supports only up to DDR2 667MHz, while Turion x2 is DDR2 800MHz... so for Athlon, even if i put DDR2 800MHz into the laptop, the RAM will still run at 667MHz since that is the max speed that the memory controller in the CPU can handle...

hope this make things clearer...

Generally DDR3 > DDR2 - Its memory speed

Think of it is BMW 3 series (DDR2) vs BMW 7 series (DDR3). Generally DDR3 is faster , and it just beats the crap out of DDR2 - in terms of power consumption , speed and such

actually DDR3 and DDR2 can have good performance gap, but due to some issue now still no fair increase. issue like speed, common DDR2 ram can bought likely DDR2 800 to DDR2 1066, while DDR3 can be bought was DDR3 1333 to DDR3 1600 ( without consider those extra-expensive one ) see the difference of speed ? little !
another issue was what being previously argued. FSB speed. no matter how fast you ram are, still cap by bus speed ( FSB for convention intel cpu, HyperTransport for AMD, QuickPath Interconncet for Intel Core i7 ). Obviously from Intel's Core i7 changes, you can notice DDR3 cant smoke DDR2. In fact Core i7 introduce triple channel ram so ram bandwidth can be triple ( instead of double in DDR2 ) to eliminate ram bandwidth bottleneck.

agree with both feet up. Becoz intel and amd had different memory controller. Intel had best combination when both same speed to eliminate bottleneck on whether side. AMD which having better experience in designing memory controller embedded.

Generally, you are right, but keep in mind higher speed resulted in loosen memory timing too, which mean not much different in the end, at least for now.

Which mean AMD have nothing to fight with intel now..... The olny thing they can do is cut, cut and cut their cpu price to remain competitive, Which is good for us, consumers laugh.gif

lolz.. so Turion will be a much better offer.. but wonder why its not available in malaysia.. uh.. any chance there will be ppl offering turion in pc fair? a singapore company? lolz..

i have zero knowledge on the processor stuffs.. haha.. all i know turion saves mroe power and cooler eh..

well.. rm300-400.. it cost quite a sum eh.. i guess.. im left with pirated vista as choice..
*
Turion and Athlon have almost the same performance. Keep in mind only the Turion ultra ZM series have larger L2 cache, the normal turion have only 1mb L2cache just like their Athlon brother.

Athlon is 512KB only la... laugh.gif

anyway, for K8, it's the speed that matters, the cache doesn't help much... if u notice, the 90nm Windsor K8 has got more cache than the newer 65nm Brisbane K8, but for the same model number, Brisbane is 100MHz faster...

Turion x2 Ultra mainly is to refine the production process to push the speed further...

only when u go into K10 with shared cache then it's good...

can i know the memory type of the k40ab 4570? cant find it

is it DDR2, DDR3 or GDDR3..
QUOTE(Someonesim @ Jul 25 2009, 05:09 PM)
And yet you include GDDR3 inside which was impossible since is a graphic memory type.
I'm not asking the RAM, I'm asking about the type of VRAM on the 4570..
is it DDR2, DDR3 or GDDR3.. its depends to the manufacturer to choose which one..

anyone knows about the type of VRAM on the k40ab?

Ummm ok, maybe i shud be more specific sweat.gif

Athlon QL = 512kbx2 L2cache = 1mb total
Turion RM = '''''''''''''''''''same''''''''''''''''''''

Turion Ultra ZM = 1mbx2 l2cache = 2mb total

Now I hope there would be no more people asking about why only athlon and no turion......... doh.gif

Clock to clock the Windsor is faster, since it has lower CPU cycle to fetch data from L2 cache, it only took 12-13 cycle tested using CPU-Z latency check,
Brisbane is supposed to have larger cache than Windsor in the first place but somehow they don't implement it, maybe the performance difference is not huge. When I check the QL-64 latency it reaches 20 cycle sweat.gif

I've play a bit with k50AB just now, spec is the same but its way too big and slightly too heavy for me, and the IQ is not as good as the 14". Price is the same, I guess they cut LCD quality to maintain same pricing as k40

IIRC, Najmod told me that 4570 on the k40ab is using ddr2 Vram, not that it make much different anyway, with its puny 64 bit bus-width....

2GB is sufficient, unless you multitask (opens boatload of programs at the same time). I got not enough memory at one time, when I open 50+ tabs in Firefox and decided to play Crysis while the browser is still in the background, during the game, it gives lack of memory. I doubt you'll do what I do, but if you does, buying 4GB now is a good bet, since DDR3 is becoming mainstream and DDR2 prices will going to raise because of it

im surprise to read tat shocking.gif isn't it kinda difficult to change tab when u have open many tabs
btw, for me
2GB ram enuf
3GB ram useful when u suddenly multitasking
4GB, basically the extra 1GB useless unless u go for 64bit & other heavy application

I've got used to open so many tabs for years now, with Tab Mix Plus its easier, but of course you need a mouse, touchpad would be PITA

Going for 3GB is silly, since the price of 2GB RAM is cheap why settle for 1GB? Plus you have slight speed boost because enabling dual channel when run 2x2GB

so.. whats the use of the cache and stuffs which are listed down.. i've no idea what are those..

so now basically.. the athlon and turion dont have much diff in terms of speed rite.. but power saving and heat does make a difference?

still contemplating on to finding a turion model.. haiz..

and amd for gaming is FTW lar rclxms.gif haha

another question here..

TS's k40ab processor supports oni 667Mhz for the ram??

the brochure i got says its 800Mhz support eh?

cache is for the CPU to store frequently used data so that it doesn't need to retrieve from the RAM or HDD, thus making the process much quicker...

usually, more cache would help, but too much, is not necessarily a good thing also, as too much will increase the time to search as well...

for AMD K8 CPU, cache doesn't really help so much, they are not shared anyway... it's the speed that really counts...

wonder if theres something wrong in the price list here..

AMD Turion X2 QL64-2.1Ghz
2GB DDR2 PC667 Dual Channel
250GB Ultra DMA harddisk
and so on..

the processor is a mistake itself right?
and the ram given is double 1Gb rite? which makes it dual channel.. and its only 667Mhz?

all correct except for CPU...

a AMD QL64 is definetely an Athlon... Turion is TL, while Turion Ultra is ZM...

using 667MHz makes sense since that's the max speed that an Athlon can support... u'll need a Turion if u want to use 800MHz instead...

Pop in a linux live cd

That's why whenever I plan to buy or test a laptop. I carry my own linux live cd (or ask the store if they have a linux cd). I just sit and play around with it - check if everything is okay

I don't think Turion makes such a huge difference, maybe the Ultra gives a bit advantages on cache dependant application. Most of the time you won't notice any difference

Turion and Athlon have almost the same performance. Keep in mind only the Turion ultra ZM series have larger L2 cache, the normal turion have only 1mb L2cache just like their Athlon brother.
*
QUOTE(InFe_eD @ Jul 25 2009, 07:46 PM)
Ummm ok, maybe i shud be more specific    sweat.gif

Athlon QL =  512kbx2 L2cache = 1mb total
Turion RM =  '''''''''''''''''''same''''''''''''''''''''

Turion Ultra ZM = 1mbx2 l2cache = 2mb total
Now I hope there would be no more people asking about why only athlon and no turion......... doh.gif

NO, I never mention anything like so. Just disable the onboard GPU and use the HD 4570 instead, you free up some system RAM too, the HD 4570 saves a lot of energy too when idle, the clockspeed and its voltage is very low in desktop

Yeah I got that too, but its better to have it run on its aspect ratio than have it stretched and looks ugly

Whatever the driver you use, I advise you to disable it IF you got problem with switching between GPU. There is not much point using it too, apart from reduced power usage

HD3200 consumes less power...

wat he meant was that HD4570 dun consume that much power compared to HD3200 (afterall, it's still a low end card... how much power can it suck???)

Currently I use the driver from the CD, I've tried DNA before, not much difference. It supposed to have some tweaks over official driver, but the main reason why I put it there is because the official driver from ATi/AMD DOES NOT support Mobility cards

orh, u mean the driver ah...

u can use the Win7 beta driver provided by AMD on Vista, it will still work...

but the catch is that u need to ve the original driver from Asus installed first, then AMD's driver will recognize the GPU...

i tried doing so with Catalyst 9.6, but there was a slight problem, i can't untick the option to install CCC, and CCC won't start properly also... i ve yet to try Catalyst 9.7 though...

Prototype is not really that hard on hardware like crysis or gta4. Mind telling me what resolution you play at? I assume on medium setting?

played on high settings with the amd fusion..

Prototype is more CPU-intensive than GPU intensive because of the large number of AI and the huge open world. My GPU barely has to work to run the game on high, but my CPU bottlenecks the game.

For 3200 graphic, go to BIOS > Advanced > VGA > Power Xpress
For ATI 4570, go to BIOS > Advanced > VGA > d GPU

You sure about this? I found out that I have no problem at all running Prototype at max with my Old and Outdated Athlon at stock clock. For Crysis and GTA4 tho it's another story, I usually oced it to at least 2.8ghz for better enjoyment.
I don't see how your C2D cpu can bottleneck the game when I'm running mine fine at lower clock and slower IPC of amd proc too rclxub.gif

Hmm, well it was a conclusion I came up with on my own. Because I saw no difference in FPS when I switched from 0x AA to 4x AA. Likewise for shadow and the other quality settings. And my GPU, which runs to 90+ celsius for Crysis, is ambling along at 70, like it's barely even working. I too thought that my GPU may be underclocking or something, but I've monitored everything with RivaTuner and it's not that. And no difference between GPU at stock clocks or overclocked either. So that's why I thought it was the CPU.

Prototype didn't have great graphics to begin with, so its not your cpu and i'm sure with those specs you will be able to run it nice and smooth.

Easy, try underclock your c2d and see if the fps take a hit. I'm guessing that tis game is no challenge to your spec at all, hence you don't see any FPS drop at whatever setting.

GT 120M GDDR3 is better than HD4570...

but if GT 120M uses DDR2, it has the same performance level as HD4570 with GDDR3 (eg Dell Studio 15)

considering the price range between a gt120 m and a hd4570 notebook(k40ab-la!) if ur trying to find something economical take the latter coz gt 120 m notebooks usually are much more expensive.

Thx for tip kelvin!

Hi, I'm considering this ASUS k40AB and also the Acer 4736G (Current price of RM2299 with intel)

I understand the graphic performance if better on the Asus, but My main concern if the tech Support/ warranty provided by them.

I just went to a computer shop just know and asked about these 2 brands (acer & asus), he told me: " although a lot of forum condemn Acer, but that's because there are a lot more Acer users than other brands, hence if you estimate 1% of the machines got problem there will be a lot (in numbers) already. therefore more ppl complaint about them... Acer has more service centres... Asus warranty minimum takes 6 weeks "

Just want to get some opinions from you Asus owners as to what you think about the statement above and what do you personally think about the tech support level of Asus? TQ TQ TQ

You cant compare Asus with Acer.............at all

Hint: There's a reason Asus dare to provide 2 years warranty instead of the standard 1 years, you know? tongue.gif

Being an owner of an Acer(old model), Compaq(CQ-40) and now Asus i would say dat Asus built and quality so far pleased me more than ever. Acer has alot of customers cause they sell cheap and are well known to the general masses. Most Acer users are students and people who buys laptop just for the sake of buying a laptop. I believe there should be no problem for warranty if u deal directly with them. If a company offers u 2 years warranty they definitely mean business.
