Where to find cheap Hoya CPL ar?

An observation with my B+W, it's really hard to make it dirty. Even if it's dirty, one wipe and its gone.

Newbie here, A200 + Kitlens. Attached are my recent hanoi trip. Condition wasn't exactly clear. Kind of smog+mist+pollution+hazy condition, The pagoda(at the centre of hoen kiem lake) is taken with 75-300mm from far far away from the other end of the lake, around 200m ?

Constructive comment/advise appreciated. No photochop effect, all straight from cam, resized only.

mm wait..weird..if i resize it with Microsoft Paint, it looks sharper than with 3rd party image resizing with 100% quality. let me attach this sample. noticed the detail diff on the sail of the junk?

1) with Msoft Paint

2) With irfanview 100% quality

yeap tats y, felt irfanview gives a 'softer' image, less harsh than paint. err or did i not do it correctly?
i guess these are the normal procedure for those who's resizing and hosting them up?

not really....the bigger the aperture = the clearer of every objects there is, in your frame...
normally fast lens( low f-number ) we normally pull it to 1 stop/ 2 stops difference..( frm 1.7 to 2 or 2.2 or more )..if u wna keep ur f number low( to get more bokeh )...

Increasing aperture will get sharper image in the same time increasing the range of dof. Most lens is not the sharpest wide open.

what is the difference of Lenspen original and Lenspen Sensorklear?

Original not meant to clean the sensor?

I am strongly against using Lenspen Sensorklear to clean the sensor. It's risky business. You might end up scratching the sensor, which is gonna cost you! I highly suggest you to bring the camera to service center if wanna clean sensor.

Pre TTL (Through the lens) : A miliseconds burst of flash light will appear to measure the light onto the subject and record back into the camera. Once it calculated it will fire the real actual flash.

ADI: Distance encoder (require lens that support it ). Will measure based on the focal length chipsets inside the lens and inform what the camera body to set for the flash.

1. AFAIK Maxxum 9 is film SLR and Maxxum 7 is similar to A700.. A900 is new model built by Sony..

2. Depend... Those Lens must be A-mount to fit Sony Alpha DSLR..

so far there's only 3 lenses leaked through Sony's own inventory,
SAL1024 10-24mm f3.5-4.5
SAL70300 70-300mm f4-5.6
SAL50F18 50mm f1.8

All the other list came out on the web are just a bunch of rumours, speculations, or merely wishlists.

If this lens come out it will kill the market for Carl Zeiss 16-80 f3.5-4.5... unless Sony plan to discontinue the 1680.

Yes, agree. About the replacement, it still can survive if the new lens cost like RM 4xxx while the 16-80 is selling at RM 2999 @ Sony Center. Who knows what will happen tongue.gif .

Ok... if fate dictates that I get the 18250, then I shall have it. Come wednesday I'm gonna check out Studio Zaloon (hmmm... wonder if they're opened yet then?) and if the 18250 is in stock I'll gett it. Or does anyone else have other recommended shops to go to?

amadeo: Thanks for starting v20! Could you put the street prices list too?

Zeegon: Your sensor size is 23.6mm wide and 15.9mm tall, if I remember correctly. A true 1:1 macro lens will be able to fill up the entire frame with something that size.

MechaHerc: 50mm and 90mm is not distance from lens; it's the focal length which is the distance from the sensor to the point where all light converges into one point.

SpOOkY: Alphas can be used at F8 - the Minolta/Sony 500mm F8 AF Reflex is one such example. I've used the beercan with 2x teleconverter and it can focus (with great difficulty lah.)

dinraxxx: The Sony 70-200mm F2.8G SSM is not RM10k la. Nearly half of that, now - same goes for the new Sony 70-400mm F4-5.6G SSM.

jsc_tidus: The FA-SHC1AM fits on all Sony Alphas.

weigie: Yes, the A900 is like a digital Minolta 9, and the A700 is like a digital Minolta 7.

The reason why I call it a Minolta 7 instead of a Minolta Maxxum 7 is because the naming is different in different countries - in Japan, it's called the Minolta Alpha 7. In America it's the Minolta Maxxum 7. Everywhere else, it's the Minolta Dynax 7.

I have a Minolta Dynax 7 by the way. biggrin.gif

Actually, the Konica Minolta 7 Digital is the digital version of the Minolta 7 - the button layout and knobs are almost identical!

And yes, all legendary Minolta AF lenses can mount on any Sony Alpha camera. Oh and the only Minolta A-mount lens which is not AF, the legendary bokeh machine Minolta 135mm F2.8/T4.5 Smooth Transition Focus also fits on Alphas.

The Wonder: #3 is interesting. It does not feel like the typical old-age portrait which tries to depict the person as old - instead she is just there in front of you.

vcvx: Interesting leak! But not totally plausible. I would love the 50-150mm F2.8G SSM DT in beercan weight. Though it is doubted that DT lenses will ever be blessed with SSM. The 10-18mm is not as likely as the Tamron 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 rebadge, though. But the 16-55mm is quite a good range!

hokc77: Nice flag!

soulfly: We don't know what the SAL70300's aperture is going to be like. It could be F4.5-5.6 to keep it under the G in specification.

ryzan76: Congratulations!

You need to upload it first at image hosting websites like photobucket, google picasa, flickr, etc......
Watch out the size of your pic (not too large). Copy the image url > hit the "IMG" button on top > paste your image url.

You're done.

Alphanatics, prepare yout camera!

Chance to view rare celestial spectacle
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...7783&sec=nation

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysians can witness a solar eclipse today from 4.30pm to 7pm.

The National Planetarium will have a special programme from 4pm to give the public a chance to see the eclipse as it happens, the National Space Agency said in a statement.

Although only a part of the eclipse can be seen in Malaysia, enthusiasts will be able to see the moon obscuring 52% to 82% of the sun depending on their location.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes directly in front of the sun. Due to the relative distances, the sun would appear as a very bright ring behind the moon, resulting in an annular eclipse.

“The eclipse will begin at about 4.30pm in Malaysia when the moon first touches the sun’s disk,” the agency said.

The celestial spectacle will be more visible when the moon slowly covers the sun to form a crescent shape until maximum obscuration occurs at about 5.50pm.

“At its final contact around 6.55pm, the moon’s shadow slowly disappears just before sunset,” the agency said.

Geocosmic Centre of Yijing Meta-Science Research Malaysia academic consultant Dr Chuah Chong Cheng said solar and lunar eclipses during Chinese New Year were a rare phenomenon.

The next such occurence would be in 2026, he added.

“The same thing happened last year when a solar eclipse occurred on the first day of Chinese New Year on Feb 7 and the penumbral lunar one on Chap Goh Meh.”

Dr Chuah said for those who are superstitious, the solar and lunar eclipses could mean “double jeopardy”.

University Sains Malaysia’s Astronomy Atmospheric Science Unit lecturer Assoc Prof Chong Hon Yew advised people not to look directly at the sun but to use a solar filter when observing the eclipse or see its reflection in a pail of water so as not to damage their eyes.

The sun's ray is very strong in NZ as there's almost no air pollution to filter. Once I left my cam on the grass for a long period and it got hot but no problem at all. flex.gif

Shot with IR (850nm) filter, colour channel swapped in photoshop.
Ghosting was all over the place especially when the sun is directly in the center of the frame. I think it's due to cheapo IR filter.

hi, i'm dont have any DSLR, but i see few of my friends have DSLR, they preferred NIKON and recommend to me to get NIKON DSLR. But I'm more interested to Sony Alpha because (1) it way more cheaper than NIKON and Canon DSLR and (2) the camera itself its more pretty compared to others. So its give more value to me and as a beginner toDSLR camera.

My question is:

1) why Sony Alpha is more cheaper than other, it is because it have less technology compared to NIKON and Canon?

2 )why many people (including professional photographer) preferred NIKON and Canon DSLR, not Sony Alpha.

Hie guys, wanna ask the opinions of sifus here.

I have an offer to purchase an minolta 28-75 f2.8 lens which have some softness at f2.8 and require calibration from sony service center. The lens price is around RM 700-800.

I'm looking for a lens to replace the 1870 kit lens. Looking for a fast lens for low light photography. Currently i have about RM 1000 available to me.

Should i go for the minolta 28-75 or use the money to get something like the sigma 24-70 f2.8 @ RM 1550 (dunno the latest price)?

ain't a sifu or wat so eva...jz an unknown photographer laugh.gif
but all i can say is wat Albert( albnok ) say is true...regarding getting a 2470 lens...u oni venture into 2470 wen u hav a FF( full frame )...usually those days( SLR time ) 2470 is jz right.....but now with the crop factor of 1.5x, i dun think u wan a 24 as a replacement for 18 do u?? blush.gif 24 times 1.5= 36, where as 18 times 1.5= 27( in mm )

why dun u try on tamron 17-50 =)...since ur bujet is about there....unless u got xtra cash...then yea...1680 CZ wud be great =)

u shud read some reviews on 2470sigma...some slight problem faced...exp- loose grip n stuffs =)...

just my humble opinion n advise icon_rolleyes.gif

thanks, it's minolta colour =).....beercan was being used at that time
Hope that ur preference towards Sony has changed nod.gif
thanks for the comment

1. less tech?? i dont think so^^...Sony has SSS( Super Steady Shot ) which helps alot especially when u do not have a optical stabilizer lens( low cost photography ) so SSS helps alot when ur using kitlens. Well, each DI( digital imaging ) company has their own strategy in getting their customer...same goes to Sony.....DSLR is an investment nod.gif ...so yea u dun owes chg ur camera body, no? but u'll most probably chg ur accesories( lens n stuffs )...same goes to any other similar hobby...the modifications are the real EARNING for the company...

2. U can say "Most", but if u do your research carefully....pro photographers nowadays are slowly coming into the Sony line... where a900 is hard to resist, especially shots with gud lighting( mostly studio shoots )

these are all my personal opinion... icon_rolleyes.gif ...One Thing Im Sure, it's that I've been loving my lowest end Sony DSLR( a200 ) more n more since I got hold of it

i don't mind the 24mm range on the wide end as i rarely use the 18- 25mm range on my kit lens anyway. Most of my shots are portraits and using wide distorts the face. A big no no.

I've tried the tamron 17-50. TBH, not very impressed with the build quality. It's so so only.

i replaced my kitlens with sigma 17-70.. I needed a wide and sharp lens. i dun mind that it is not fixed 2.8 because a flash is still needed for lo-light indoor shots...smile.gif...try the lens..its really sharp

My advice is check very carefully. Something is fishy if seller dont want COD.
Price is way below street price. Could be stolen one.

I'm not going to buy from the seller, I'm just posting it here, so that other users can know what kind of scammers exists out there and help spread the word. BTW, the fella replied when I asked how can I trust him:

QUOTE

registered company and we are given all our customers outside the
state 100% assurance on any product being purchase from us so no
worries for you if you dealing with us as soon as your payment is

you with all shipping details including the Tracking confimation code
to know the time of arrival of your package.

New customer  to be assured you can deposit 50% of the total cost of
your order and you balance immediately on arrival of the package

But he didn't not give neither his country nor the name/website of his company. That's the end of it. I'm too bored to layan him anymore. Going to sleep.. icon_rolleyes.gif

guys just asking some opinion,

what other option I can do when I was trying to take waterfalls picture...
the problem was the situation was tooo bright,

where in Aperture mode I put my F number to the max value, which is 22 or 36, and ISO 100
my shutter speed still end up faster then 1/60 (which kinda too fast for me for taking water flows picture)

so even if In shutter mode if I set to 1/5 or 1/20 sec , the F number will blink2 at max value and I will end up getting overexposed picture,

well then, whats the solution for those problem? rclxub.gif

ryzan76, great catch with the small spider!

raist86: Try International Camera, Pertama Complex. They have the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 in A-mount.

hkhk: The Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 has the occasional gear stripping problem. The geartrain is made of plastic and might wear off especially on the infinity focus end. So when you turn on the camera it will reset the lens to infinity and get stuck there (with a LOUD vibrating sound) because the gear track has broken off. You can still manually focus and bring the focus ring back to close focus and it will work to some extent but if you misfocus and cause it to go towards infinity, it will get stuck again.

This is something the warranty will fix, if it's of any consolation.

Hello everyone, how's the Chinese new year celebration going on? Just wondering what would be a good upgrade for kitlen 1870? Let's say wide angle wise between Tamron1750 & Sal16105? Budget RM3000, purpose of usage for indoor and outdoor.

p/s: is f2.8 really important?

eh, what's the current price of sigma 24-70 f2.8 and tamron 17-50 f2.8 ar?

headache to choose between either one of them. is the extra 7mm on the wide side worth losing 20mm on the long end?

I hope someone can answer this...it's giving me a headache choosing between the 1750 f2.8 and 16105 f3.5 rclxub.gif

But this lens is always resale able due to its f3.5 and not fast (claim by some use-to-be owners). I'm torn between the 16-17 wide and also the 50-105mm zoom cry.gif ....actually plan to get both but seems it's not a wise decision as advice by some people i ask.

Another solution would be:
1. Get the Tamron 1750 for the f2.8 and get a bagpack(since i don't have a good one...currently using the sony sling bag)
2. Get the Sal16105 as it covers 16 for wide and 105 mid zoom...and claim have the similar standard to the 1680CZ
3. Get both and settle with it... blink.gif
4. Waiting other options from you bros here brows.gif

If i'm going for the f2.8 all the way might as well go for Tamron1750, Sigma2470 and Sigma70200 thumbup.gif

p/s: UWA is another thing i'm thinking in the future...1118 or 1020 icon_question.gif

WindY2K: If you HAVE to HAVE something beyond 50mm, and have it F2.8, then get:

Tamron 17-50mm F2.8
Tamron 90mm F2.8

You have a flash, you know whether F2.8 is important or not.

Another way, is:
Sony 16-105mm F3.5-5.6 DT
Sigma 30mm F1.4

The 16-105mm is for a wide range. Honestly in walkabouts I never needed more than 100mm.

The 30mm F1.4 is the true champion of low-light. 30mm means its wide enough for getting 2-3 people in a shot sitting opposite you. The 50mm is a bit too tight and will get only 1 person.

The 30mm F1.4 is a great 'party' lens. Just bring body and 30mm, no flash needed.

raist86: There is also the risk of gear stripping on the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro.

When my Sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4 EX gear stripped, I was forced to get a replacement standard lens. I ended up with a Sony 18-70mm F3.5-5.6 DT kit lens once again, and I'd say that when I tried it again I realized it wasn't all that bad and can be pretty sharp once you know how to use it.

The reason: I want a sharp lens and i hardly shoot with 2.8 (or lower)for group pics...(FYI, i shoot mostly indoor/party pix). F2.8 is a bit too shallow for me, and 24mm is a bit too tight on my aps-c(a200). i need a lens with a mdf that doesnt require me to get off from my sit just to shoot the person that is sitting next to me, (17-70 mdf=20cm). just my 2 cents...

I knew you going to choose the Tamron 1750..haha...but would the Tamron 90mm will be its partner or another choice?

To tell you the truth, the main reason i got the flash is because to have a good lighting if necessary needed or in a low light condition..ii'll attend my 1st workshop on 21st feb...probably can learn more there..

30mm huh? Most i know was the SAL50mm 1.4 then again that's another story..

By the way, thanks bro.. thumbup.gif

how much is the sigma 17-70 now?

i guess it's a better compromise as like albnok says, how often will i be shooting at f2.8. I have a flash to back up on low light situation. It does cover a wider range.

raist86: Should be around RM15xx-17xx.

WindY2K: The other thing which anybody who has tried the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC will notice, is the insane minimum focusing distance! At 20cm from the sensor plane to the subject, minus the length of the lens, and you have a lens that practically touches the subject! Try it!

WindY2K: The other thing which anybody who has tried the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC will notice, is the insane minimum focusing distance! At 20cm from the sensor plane to the subject, minus the length of the lens, and you have a lens that practically touches the subject! Try it!

the Sig1770 is definitely attractive in terms of the image quality it produces compare to kitlens. My only concern is the build quality.

yeap it's true, the sony has noiser image relatively, on iso800 above. it's a small trade off, considering ur getting:

- 9 AF points
- relatively cheaper price
- build in Image stabilizer (SSS)

the canon and nikon has its downside too, to name a few, some might agree that the color reproduction on nikon is a bit too 'vivid' making it too comic like, and u only get 3 AF points

u shoot the a200 with external flash then should be okay la...set ISO at 800..noise is not very apparent, unless you are super fussy and pixel peep alot, but in practical terms..it doens't really matter.

mm speaking bout 50mm f1.7/1.8, comparing sony's (minolta) to nikon's version, it's like rm600(sony-used) vs rm400(nikon-new). wow is there something i'm missing for the price differences? different range?

i was reading over the comparisons @ dcresource.com. I think that's the best review site so far, as it seems to be 'neutral' on all brands, laying down pros n cons.

Let me pick up one of his comments. (I do agree with this), again it is only his opinion.

''I had mixed feelings about the D60's photo quality, and I think a lot of people will disagree with me here. I think that the photos produced by the camera are too soft, and way oversaturated. Colors are so vivid that they almost appear cartoonish, in my opinion. You can dial down the saturation a bit (and increase the sharpness) using the Optimize Image feature, though I'd use that on a case-by-case basis, as it can make things a bit too dull.'

one of my nikon fren told me that he really like sony color n he told me that the output from my a200 didnt need too much PP when he using it for wedding album compare to the image from his d80 n d200.
(we always doing wedding job together n i leave to him to pp, process n print album...)

i think its just personal preference....

vertical ggrip is not a necessity unless you shoot a lot of pictures to need the longer battery life or shoot a lot of pics in potrait orientation to want to have the convinience.

Thanks for the advise. Will try to implement. This was my first workshop as well as model photo shoot. Learned a lot that day. The indoor had a lot of flash going on that I had to do a lot of cropping to get the unsightly parts out. Will keep it in mind next time.Thank you for your advise again.

hey guys..recently i notice quite a number of my friends(mostly female),they prefer their portrait to b soft-focused...most of them said they love the dreamy style n such..in the end i always end up adding another gaussian-blurred layer n blend it with multiply or overlay....

well..i don really mind adding those stuff for them 1 by 1...but i was wondering issit good or perhaps correct to do it that way??

Prevention...well..A900 is the only answer for alpha.. tongue.gif

Elimination of noises, yes!

Well, u can use software like Noiseware.. Quite OK! but shooting at high iso for sure lose some sharpness, but noiseware will help eliminating those distasteful noises...try on iso3200 and u will be amazed.. + can do batch oso..save time...

Not sure what you mean by high noise. All pictures taken at high ISO will have some noise ...

Also depends on your previous experience and what you are comparing with.

Guys,
Need to ask a quick question. When you grip ur alpha (mine is A300), does it make a squeky sound? I mean grip like you are taking a picture. Mine squeks and its driving me nuts! It doesnt feel solid in my hands. My bros D40 doesnt make a single squek.

Shud i be worried? Maybe I shud take it to sony style klcc tomorrow sad.gif

difference in terms of demand..more demand and the iten is not many, the the price will be higher than expected, something like that la..

like sony 50mm f1.4, the price is higher that the other prime 50mm, because of the picture that it can produce, i think albnok did post about the comparisn between sony, sigma, nikon n canon prime 50mm..maybe u can dig previous version for the link.

saw that minolta in trade zone.. still undecided either to get that one or buy a new sony.. read that sony's one got new improved coating and got warranty for sure.. the warranty worth the extra bucks (less than RM300) i believe.. if get the minolta, have to gamble a bit la coz no warranty.. and the minolta is the same age as me la laugh.gif

AFAIK, minolta 50mm gor flare control issue, not sure about sony 50mm, need to ask someone that owned both lenses or albnok to clarify on this..

i cant give any further comment about this lens because i dont own any tongue.gif

WindY2K: The other thing which anybody who has tried the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC will notice, is the insane minimum focusing distance! At 20cm from the sensor plane to the subject, minus the length of the lens, and you have a lens that practically touches the subject! Try it!
*
Yeah, windy2k, go try the lens and u will be amazed:)....mfd of 20cm is very useful (at least for me). I tried the lens in sg wang boeing

I've tried to shoot a family portrait with 4 rows of people using F14 at 20mm. Do you guys think the F14 is too much? Perhaps F8 is enough?

how far apart are your family members sitting away from each other?
iirc there used to be an f-stop calculator measuring the DOF at a certain f-stop and its corresponding focal length. trying to dig through my links.

ah, here you go. http://dofmaster.com/doftable.html

IMO, none. 28mm is just not wide enough for an APS-C camera. Maybe u'll say that u don't need wide, but believe me dude, u'll be sorry that u don't have the wide. go for SAL16105/SAL18250/KM18200 la if u want the range. My vote goes to 16105.

vandechrome: I like the WB, very pinky skin tones. Some parts of the picture are not as bright as others, though like on the right half of #2.

#4 could crop out just the left and right a bit, and some minor distortion correction.

chiggy: MMM duck!

syafix: Use flash and your high ISO shots will be less noisy. If you can't flash, overexpose slightly.

SHOfrE3zE, man those are classics!

ryzan76, nice road shot! A minor bit of clone stamp might make it even more picturesque. The caterpillar is way cool.

dinraxxx: You might find the 28-135mm range more useful. Both are kinda dark anyway.

c4no1: You can use any brand lens as long as it says Minolta AF or Sony A-mount. That means a Tamron/Sigma/Tokina lens which says "Minolta AF" or "Sony" will fit.

Also, all Minolta AF lenses will fit as well.

signither: The Minolta AF 50mm F1.4 has an internal flare problem when you shoot a black cap on a bright white background. The flare will show as a spot in the middle.

But then again, I don't shoot black caps at all so most times this will not be a problem.

bysquashy: Bracket if you're not sure - shoot once at F8, F11, F14, F16.

try asking bro ament about the focusing screen.. he have some minolta focusing screen, and also mod some nikon's one to fit in alpha..

or you can buy it yourself at: http://www.focusingscreen.com/index.php?cPath=26

those one have been modded to fit alpha but a bit pricey la.. also, need to install it urself..

here's the instruction neway: http://www.focusingscreen.com/work/a350en.htm

btw, here's the comparison btwn those focusing screen: http://www.focusingscreen.com/privacy.php

IMO, none. 28mm is just not wide enough for an APS-C camera. Maybe u'll say that u don't need wide, but believe me dude, u'll be sorry that u don't have the wide. go for SAL16105/SAL18250/KM18200 la if u want the range. My vote goes to 16105.

in indoor low light situation...do u guys think i should go for F58 and stick with my kitlens or SAL50F14 ler? i suppose 50mm F1.4 allows me to shoot in low light condition right? and i was thinking about a prime also..
since both F58 and 50mm are about the same price..which 1 to get first...of coz if i got $ i want to have both..tongue.gif

ah_Hui: if u get SAL50f14, u can shoot in low light w/out flashlight...but if u have F58, u can shoot in low light with any lens even with SAL50F14...so i recommend u to buy F58 first...

i believe F58 would be better.. you can learn a lot more of the photography style n technique from a flash compared to a lens nod.gif

if set to Auto,
no need to control

if set to A,
scroll the dial on ur right index finger to change the aperture

if set to S,
scroll the dial on ur right index finger to change the shutter speed

if set to M,
and if control dial setup is set on shutter speed,
scroll the dial on ur right index finger to change the shutter speed,
scroll the dial on ur right index finger while pressing the +/- button with ur right thumb to change the aperture

but if control dial setup is set on aperture,
scroll the dial on ur right index finger to change the aperture,
scroll the dial on ur right index finger while pressing the +/- button with ur right thumb to change the shutter speed

how far apart are your family members sitting away from each other?
iirc there used to be an f-stop calculator measuring the DOF at a certain f-stop and its corresponding focal length. trying to dig through my links.

ah, here you go. http://dofmaster.com/doftable.html

Thanks for the link. Very useful indeed! F11 is the answer biggrin.gif

it would be nicer if you shoot the flower from side, instead of top.. that's the first rule that i learned here for taking pics of flower.. unless u particularly wanna shoot from that angle to capture the pattern or something la nod.gif

Personally I like this photo.

But the greens closest to the flower is focused too, which is abit distracting. Try a wider angle with larger aperture, instead of the 50mm 5.6 you used =)
