Yeah try KSH at ttdi, the shop on the same row as Domino's Pizza or Bikepro at Taman Megah. They are the 2 main shops in KL. A lot of eye candy so hold your wallets.

Yo bro ... if you have a budget around 5k to 6k ... I would advise you to get a fully aluminium or aluminium with carbon B-stay. With your budget ... you can get a fully carbon ... but very low end 1 and its not stiff. If you want to go for a fully carbon ... I'll advise you to go for something at least above RM11K. Normally good carbon frames are like Trek, cervelo, or colnago

You can try going to Joo Ngan Bicycle Centre and have a look ... They are the distributer for trek, cannondale and also a new brand called CSK. If you're budgeting, I'll recommend you the CSK ... its actually an italian produck but paint job done by a taiwanese. its a very good frame just that paint design kinda weird. If you want the address ... PM me.

P/S: I love cycling very much, but ever since i start to work, my mom give away my favourate bike which cost me RM3000.00 to buy during my younger school days, what a pitty... sad.gif

Well ... I used to cycle competitively, but too much politics in malaysian sports, What a shame , hehe. I've actually tried out a lot of bikes, and to be honest, if you want to enjoy riding your bike, you must have a good frame with a correct size Components comes after that (at least a shimano 105). Carbon frames are very rigid and it gives great response but when you go long distance, its very uncomfortable expecially on malaysian roads.

Currently, I'm riding a merlin titanium with dura-ace. Frame is kinda flexible which means less response but its great for long distance ride, its very comfortable and the frame does not corrose. Next bike will want something abit rigid, maybe will go for a litespeed titanium with carbon reinforce B-stay.

I left competitive cycling in 2000 after almost 9 years. Recently I surfed to KSH website & was shocked to find out how much a decent bike costs these days. If I'm not mistaken, the new Look 580 frame costs RM10,800 !! During my day, U could get a Look KG196 with at least Dura Ace componentry with that kind of money. But of course, technologically, a lot has improved.

My bike was a Giant CFR-1 (RM1280) with mixed components. Shifter was Shimano RX-100 STI, front derailleur was Dura Ace, Shimano Ultegra rear derailleur with 8 speed casette (12-23T), Selle Italia Flite Ti saddle, Look Carbo Pro pedals, Shimano 105 crankset (53-39T), Cinelli stem, Mavic deep drop handlebar, Deore XT headset, Mavic clincher wheelset. My helmet was Bell Razor Pro Pump, Briko Stinger glasses, Shimano R120 shoes. Clothing was provided by my team. It costs around RM4,000.00, I sold it for RM1K.

I saw some Lerun models but wasn't really impressed with the component offering. Perhaps U could buy the bike & upgrade the components later.

with that mucc budget, you can't squeeze ultegra and carbon together

i would spend more on the wheels. ZIPP will be my favourite. mavic will be the minimum. good pair of wheels determines how good and how steep you can corner w/o much vibration

get the sizing correct. size is very sensitive on a road bike since you'll spend a lot of time seated (vs mountain bike)

get most of your money spent on these and u'll never go wrong:
1. soft, xtra light, xtra comfortable leather saddle (i recommend selle italia flite gel titanium - rm 300+)
2. carbon streamlined (tapered) seat post - rm 150+
3. good set of very light wheels with tapered rim and the least amount of spoke - rm 1,500+
4. pedals. use dedicate road clipless pedal. they're wider and lighter than MTB counterparts. recommend time pedals
5. road specific shoes. theyr'e extremely light, very airy and very very stiff (carbon soles) - SiDi carbons - rm 250+, do i have to say more? (be careful, some cheaper SiDi are made somewhere else. be sure yours is made in good old italy)

colnago? aiyoh, 10k just for the frame. pure italian design, made in taiwan.

yes, good high end carbon frame (including aluminum) are manufactured and fabricated in taiwan

i agree with this guy. check the taiwanese manufacturers. some are even OEM producer for high end frames. identical framse but different decals and brand. much much cheaper also.

Lerun bikes are actually from taiwan ... just that its assembly over here. Actually since 1 and half years ago .... the prices for bikes has went up. Some american companies also entered into china and make their bikes there and shimano components lower that 105 is made in malaysia. Their factory is at johor ... that's y I always recommend riders out there to have at least a shimano 105 components, otherwise go for a campagnolo(lowest range).

Yea ... colnago , not quite sure bout the aluminium frames but the carbon frames are fully italian. The 1 I'm eyeing on is the C50 ...very stiff frame, but just want it for collection.

Talking bout the ZIPP wheels .... they are really light and stiff. I've used the 404 before but sold it after that. Braking is very bad during the raining season because I'm using the tubeless type (even with special brake pads for carbon walls). So you guys may wanna consider getting the clincer type ... hehe.

I m new to road bike but wish 2 share my 2 cent experience. Try to get ppl who already in the sport .they can help/advise you what to buy/ and how to start riding. Its safer to start riding in group so you still need to know the ppl.

I start with buying a good used alum. frame and fixed shimano ultegra component into it. It cost me abt 3K. Our group cycle the Guthrie higway in the evening after 5 pm. We start with 40km total ride for 3-4 time before going to 60KM and 80 Km (that is 2X40 KM) ride.

For the next ride target will be Ipoh century ride 2008 13-July (100 mile) 160Km ride...

Ive been on alot of hobby trails.. golf, RC (from, car, heli, plane boat..), sailing..mountain bike and now road bike..

my advise.. get a decent bike... do a lot of riding .. once u enjoy it..... get a dream bike .. as for me it will be
cervelo R3 super light...

happy cycling .. it good for your heart...

Like cycling just wondering where should I start of with my stamina? Should I start from cycling in my gym? As far as I know cycling is total different from treadmill, I can perform quite well on treadmill...
Actually my uncle is a cyclist as well, but a bit paisey I should build up my stamina before I follow him... blush.gif blush.gif blush.gif

Road biker reporting in!

I have a Merida 903 which I just recently bought from KSH (near Taman Bahagia LRT station). Loving it ever since... I'm staying around SS3 so if any roadies around, PM me for rides! biggrin.gif

I was just wondering, is the Thursday ride from Puchong to Putrajaya and back still active? I joined that 4 years ago and I couldn't find the ride's details anymore in the PCC newsletter.

Cheers!

GIANT is a reputable brand indeed across the world. They produce expensive bikes such as for competition. However they do have budget level too.

Road bike usually need to measure your size. The bike body will need to suit your height so that you won't have after effect on your back after long cycling.

I would suggest you visit bike shop and get some advice from the seller or you can refer to youtube.

hope it help

S$ 400 or RM 400? If you want to get a decent bike, aim for at least RM 1k new. Other than that, suffer in hell! hahaha! Jus tkidding ;-)

A decent helmet would cost you around RM100 or less. A more expensive ones are lighter though. Gloves should be around RM 100 too for a good one. I got a crappy one for RM 40 and it almost got me killed because it got stuck in my handlebar...

There is one shop near Taman Bahagia LRT station called KSH Merida. You won't miss it because they have a big banner with the Merida word. I like going to that shop compared to another nearby shop called BikePro in Taman Megah. Reason being the people in BikePro are one arrogant people. Unless you have loads of money or want to buy something expensive, they won't even bother about you. Their boss is the super arrogant ones, I guess their mechanics learnt it from him. This was the deciding factor when I wanted to buy my own road bike with a budget of RM 3k. People in KSH are friendly and responsive. Thumbs up to them!

I haven't been cycling since I was in Form 4 or 5 (and that was way back in 1995/1996!!!) and recently wanted to pick it up again.

I used to have a LOOK roadbike but I can't remember the specs - I got it from a trade with a friend. Realized that my parents had given it away a few years ago when we were moving house. I didn't realize it was gone for years until one fine day when I went to the back of my house and wanted to check on the bike! I've wanted a MTB since I was 15 years old and finally got one 16 years later! biggrin.gif

I went to almost all the shops in PJ/Taman Tun area. However, didn't go to BikePro cause I think they've moved to Taman SEA nearby.

I agree that the guys at KSH are friendly. After months of researching, I finally settled for a MTB from KSH TTDI.

Glad to see a cyclist thread here biggrin.gif

I have a Cannondale Synapse bike in the UK, thinking of shipping it to KL. I cycle quite a bit in when in UK , cycle to office around 20KM per day and on weekends some trips 50-100KM

Now I'm staying by KL Sentral , Brickfields and I really want to bring my bike here even though a lot of traffic and hot weather. But cycling in the gym is too boring sad.gif

Is it a crazy / stupid idea to try and cycle around here? I really miss having my bike !!!

That's only my 2nd time riding to Bentong. just ride everyday or once every 2 days to Genting Sempah in the morning before your class or work, then you'll be fit enough to ride to bentong within 2-3 weeks.

Will you be riding tomorrow?

putrajaya is fine, mex highway not so..
but kesas traffic polluting the air. ulu yam - genting; need to compete with big cc bikers sweat.gif
ime, hulu langat is still the most attractive choice due to it's fresh morning air

Most Genting Sempah and Hulu Langat routes are pretty safe except for riding back downhill after the climb to the starting point, make sure you dont bantai the corner too hard especially during rainy days and pls make sure that your brake works.

Starting from bukit jalil. well you need to be confident on the road, u have to get used to cars zoomed past and giving ways to the motor bikes. Jalil on MEX to Putra is pretty big rolling routes for beginners.

Ride more often and you will gain confidence on the road, you need to control the road read the traffic well. A good test on road traffic reading is to ride Jalan Kebun near Klang. Heavy traffic with lotsa of lorries, narrow roads and motorcyclists. If you can ride this road comfortable, you can basically ride anywhere in Malaysia. smile.gif

Anyone wants me to teman for ride, just PM, I'm game for most rides on the weekend, my only condition is to start before 7am. Start early, finish early.

Is this bike worth it? It's with the new 105(2010) groupset. But the wheelset is Giant, which needed to be upgraded in the later stage. Total weight of the bike is 8.4kg....

Still thinking to buy or not???

Good price. You seldom get roadbike with 105 component below 4K. I am interested as well.
Which shop? Am thinking of getting a 2nd roadbike as my missus hantam my Merida 905 when riding with me relegating me to my MTB only.

Buy, and come and join me for rides... Where you buying your Giant bike from? Desa Sri Hartamas? The bike is too good to be true especially when it is also a carbon frame..

@Patrickstar, PM me if you wanna go for rides. Where are you based anyway?

it's difficult as I am based in Bkk.... so i will buy this bike and then bring it back to Bangkok....

the shop owner told me there are a few options to bring it back in Malaysia.
1) check in by yourself ( cheapest option, if your luggage weight permits)
2) by ship
3) by air

As some of my colleagues might take the option 2.... for me to carry it back for you, i am really sorry, coz i need to be back in bkk and then I have no idea when i will only coming back to KL... as all my business trips are uncertains....

Added on July 29, 2010, 1:16 amhuhuhuhu... got the bike already.... did 10km with my colleague at a cycling trail in Taipei... Taipei is superbly friendly for cyclist....
happy with the bike.... kekekke...

but had plenty to explain to my GF...

plkvoon - congrates, good buy for less than RM4k.

Complete racing bike, no tax at all, so no worries, pay add. RM50 I think for sports luggage via airasia, mas is free but not sure whether included in the allowable check-in weight?

for the pass 2 years, I had been in and out of Thailand almost every single month.... damn sad la... searching via forum, some ppl got lucky to get away and others need to pay eventhough it's an old bike....

even my gf in thailand call them saying that I will be bringing a racing bike(sports equipment), but it was rejected as Thai customs regards bike as a mode of transportation.....

as this trip back to Bkk will only last few days before i travel to Manila.... damn headache la... shouldnt have got the bike if i know bout this KNN 30% tax....

my friend recommend me to send direct to Malaysia, but it's useless coz i am barely back to Malaysia....

Oooh , nice to see a cycling thread here smile.gif Is there any place in KL to rent a good road bike? I have a bike back in the UK like this one (with SPD-SL of course biggrin.gif)

Since coming to KL I've been very lazy, hardly ever using the gym as cycling outside so much better, sitting on a bike in the gym really boring for me.

I considered to ship my bike from UK to KL, but not sure if its a good idea or not? I live in KL Sentral and can't think of anywhere reasonable around here to cycle and the traffic quite bad also, I never see anyone cycling around here! Also I don't drive, so difficult for me to get out to other places to go cycling sad.gif

no need to spend big money anymore for the bike.... unless i wanna upgrade to a brand new set of wheels...

** may i know how long you guys practise the clipless before going on road? i still dont have the guts going to the main traffic in Bangkok with my new SPD SL clipless... afraid falling and getting knock by the cars....

When about to stop, unclip one feet first, usually it is the left foot here in Malaysia. Dont unclip when you stop, by then you might lose your balance and jatuh percuma.

but i am gaining more confident... should be able to cycle on the main road soon... had been cycling in the condo parking... the security guards are damn curious of wat am i doing as i keep lock and unlocking which create some noises... kekekekeekekekeke...
1st drop was also hurtful for my bike and shoes... scratch the pedals, back derailure and shoes..... but it was funny... hehehehhe

U guys now need to practise using clipless ? Hahah... when I started riding, I had to practise using toe clips + straps.. used it for 4 years before finally upgraded to clipless... my first ever clipless was Look PP66 (or 156/166, can't remember) .. considered a relic nowadays...

Used downtube shifters for 6 years before upgrading to STI (RX100), used 7 speed for 6 years before upgrading to 8 speed... what else... used single pivot brakes for 6 years before upgrading to dual-pivot.. used steel frame for 5 years before upgrading to carbon fiber (Giant CFR-1)... heck.. I managed to work my way into the Sukom '98 project team using a steel bike... RM340 Colnago pirated version bought from Joo Ngan (who later became my coach for a while).. bike weight was 23 lbs.. unheard of nowadays right, even for a mountain bike ?

Didn't use hardshell helmet until finally I bought my Bell Razor Pump Pro in 1993. I've only ever used 3 helmets thruout my 9 years in cycling... after the Bell I had Specialized Sub-6 Pro (damaged when I crashed head first at Cheras Velodrome in 1995), & I bought another Bell Razor Pump Pro after my crash.. I still have the helmet today..

Had my first "original" sunglasses in 1996, just before I left for SUKMA Kuantan (my last Sukma), it was a Briko Zen. That was 5 years after I first got involved with cycling, 3 years after I started representing Selangor..

I rode my Sukom 98 road trials in 1993 using a steel bike with 28" rear wheel (with Schrader valves), 27" front wheel, 7-speed drivetrain with downtube shifters, toeclip pedal, steel crankset.. My dad bought me the bike for about RM300... I changed the fork to a standard fork (hence the 27" wheel), I had to set the brakepads vertically on the caliper becoz it was too long.. but I managed to get 8th place in the road race.. around the same placing for time trial..

Hahah... those were the days... just sharing my experience with U guys... biggrin.gif

Wanna share some experience of mine yesterday when cycle kesas.

As usual, finish my route, went for a tea break near Seri Petaling.

Was blocked by JPJ....a major operation.
My car was kena beacuse of HID. No question on that.
The officer then start his conversation.
JPJ:wah pergi cycle huh..mana u cycle?
Me:kesas route.
JPJ: Owh...eh, salah tau basikal you letak dalam kereta. Passenger seat dah fold then you pulak letak basikal.
Me: Salah???Apasal Salah...basikal tak terkeluar pun
JPJ: Kalau nak bawa basikal dgn kereta...you kena apply dan pasang roof rack.

My question is, private car cannot carry bike inside the car??
As far as i concern, as long as the object does not above the side window and rear windshield it is not wrong doing.

Is my understanding correct? Pls enlighten. Thx

Not too sure bout this rules..... the only one makes sense is that u need to apply a permit for the bike rack.....

BTW getting excited for the long ride tomorrow... from Bangkok to Amphawa.... for those who dunno, Amphawa is a famous tourist spots for their floating market and also fire flies watching.....
Estimated 84kms, 1 way.... will be riding there on Saturday and then early Sunday morning riding back to Bangkok....

Any good shop for buying a decent road bike in KL , and how are the prices here? I guess quite expensive compared to UK where it is a lot more popular than here sad.gif

Difficult decision if I should buy a bike here, or take mine from home when I go back next !

well guys, another weekend pass... last weekend(ten/ten/ten tongue.gif) i joined the Queen's Cup Huahin Triathlon... http://www.huahintriathlon.com/index.php

I joined the Duathlon race instead.... well i think i fare quite decent as i didnt train as much as i wanted....

so here are the results for a first timer, for 5km run+ 40km cycle+ 10km run = 3 hours and 33 mins....

the last 10km run was the killer, walk almost half of it... sad.gif

I dun think U need a permit to use roof racks. Just check with JPJ la.. but I really dun think there's any requirement for a permit, or else we won't see so many roof racks on so many cars.

Used to be. When I was racing the track program at SSBJ was just starting. That was like 12 years ago, so I dun think Azizulhasni was around at that time. My specialty was sprints & kilo.. I was a track sprinter. Ranked as high as 2nd national in 1996.

When I decided to quit, Josiah had just returned to Malaysia, met him a couple of times, never had the chance to race him though.

My former coach, Rosman Alwi is now coach at SSBJ (I think)..

Azizulhasni is indeed a special breed. & the whole national track team is now really world-class, with a world-class coach & managing to challenge at world level. During my time, U'd never heard of anybody clocking 10secs for flying 200m, the national record in 1997 was 10.98 by Rosman. Nowadays at least 4-5 guys in the track team is capable of clocking mid 10secs.

In the late 90s & early 2000s, our best kilo rider was Jamil Kadiron (I dunno where he is now). His best time (& national record) was around 1:08. Nowadays Rizal Tisin can do very low 1:02s... at ACC last year I think he won it with 1:01.. during my time, that kinda time was a world record...

So much has changed now in track cycling, better bikes, better training technique, better understanding of aerodynamics... all that contributes to phenomenal times. Wished I had stayed around longer...

thanks tenno..

I have the same thought... roof rack does not need to apply any valid license for 1 bike carrier.

I think the JPJ officer taking advantage to talk more since I have an offense already.

Anyway, just a sharing to you guys should you all bumped into such cases in future.

I'm not quite sure if Raleigh's road bikes are available in Msian market.. years ago Raleigh's got a couple of low-end models, the Rapide & Super Rapide.. those are easily found at any bike shops, even "uncle" ones... Maybe it's being sold under other brand names... like Lerun was a Raleigh model.. but those are for mountain bikes..

If U just wanna be just-another-rider then all U need to do is train hard. But if U wanna be a champion & compete at the highest levels, U need to have the genetics first of all, then the heart of a champion (very rare, in Malaysia maybe only evident in Azizulhasni, Nicol David & LCW), then U need to have extremely high tolerance for pain & never, ever give up.

Of course, U need the legs also la. But then that can be developed. A champion material like Azizulhasni wasn't produced overnite.... (well, maybe he was "produced" at nite though... tongue.gif )

If you are looking for normal bikes, not the "terror" spec or "terror" price ones. Then this uncle shop calls Heavy Tools in SS15, Subang Jaya is the cheapest around. You can check catalog and ask him to order for you from supplier. He doesn't carry high end bikes, mostly, entry-level bikes.

His contact: 0356346610

Case: My friend bought Raleigh Diablo (entry-level MTB) from him for RM740 and USJ Cycles price is higher.

There was a Zipp bike, developed for TT & Triathlon, I dunno if they still produce it though. But Zipp is primarily a wheels & parts manufacturer though.

MTB owners, if U're riding are done predominantly on the road, pls change to slick tires. Or better still, have 2 sets of wheels, one set knobby & 1 set slicks. U'd look really, really silly & inexperienced riding knobbies on the road. Change it to slicks at the time of buying, most shops will just change it for free. What do U get by riding slicks ? Better control, better grip, much, much lower rolling resistance, better speed, better cornering, everything better & less rookie factor.

Also, a word of advice for newbies or rookie riders. It's absolutely crucial for U to get Ur position right on the bike. Any good shop or experienced rider can help U with positioning. First, U have to get Ur bike size correct (I'm talking about road bikes here). For normal, typical bike frames, a rider with 175cm height should choose bikes with 52-54cm seat tube (centre to centre). But with the advent of bikes with smaller main triangle nowadays, it's okay to go for shorter seat tubes, but Ur seatpost must be of correct height. I think U can Google this sizing chart up. A 6-footer might choose 56cm seat tube.

Bikes with smaller main triangle will be stiffer than those with big/normal ones. But a small main triangle could lead to other irregular parts. Example, U'll need a longer stem (sometimes with zero rise), longer seat post, longer crankarms, etc. Bikes with small main triangles was made popular by Chris Boardman, world champion pursuiter & world hour record holder.

Ur position on bike, with the order of importance is as follows :
1. Seat height (incorrect seat height could lead to knee problems)
2. Top tube length (incorrect top tube length could lead to back problems)
3. Stem length (same as #2)
4. Handlebar width (too wide & handling will be slow, too narrow will cause very nervous handling)

From my observation, nowadays most riders prefer to be quite stretched out when riding. But there's no point having extreme positions if U can't apply full power to the pedals. Get advice from experienced riders. I often can point out positioning mistakes/problems just by observing the way some riders ride. Also, when riding on the bar tops, relax Ur arms & bend slightly on the elbows, U'll experience less fatigue than if Ur arms are stiff & straight.

*
depends on wat knobby you have really, i have maxxlite 1.95, its as light mayb even lighter than a lot of slicks, and i can tapau most roadie anytime, i aint bragging. anyway, real men rides mtb, roads are for training only, IMHO

for the pass 2 years, I had been in and out of Thailand almost every single month.... damn sad la... searching via forum, some ppl got lucky to get away and others need to pay eventhough it's an old bike....

even my gf in thailand call them saying that I will be bringing a racing bike(sports equipment), but it was rejected as Thai customs regards bike as a mode of transportation.....

as this trip back to Bkk will only last few days before i travel to Manila.... damn headache la... shouldnt have got the bike if i know bout this KNN 30% tax....

my friend recommend me to send direct to Malaysia, but it's useless coz i am barely back to Malaysia....
*
Funny, i go to Chiangmai almost every year for past 3 years for some downhill action and never did i get taxed at all! Mayb u should just pack it in a seasoned cardbox and declare is as a used bike or somethin.

Yea...I dont really have a group so far...I have only 4 members so far if inclusive of Kent82 laugh.gif
But there are few small groups or rather they are 1 big group who cycled quite fast.

Based on the route....it should be 25KM for return trip. It's a good practice for every level to build stamina.

I'm aiming MEX next!! rclxm9.gif

No worries plkvoon...I will be there every Tuesday.
Since you just touch down, take ur time to settle ur stuff after so long abroad.

KL is raining everyday recently. I also sometimes can't cycle at night.

I'm currently riding 25-6 km/h...Guess not so fast yet...hope to hit 30km/h soon.

with more rides, u will feel comfortable with 25kmph and above....

ahh, clipless pedals..... kekkekee.... i had many funny moments with them... one piece of advise, practise it more riding on open areas..... for myself, i found that practising at home not as effective compare to on the road(but make sure it's safe).... u will have plenty of funny moments with them..... icon_idea.gif

I previously cycled from Yulek -> Jln Kuari -> Jln Cheras -> Tmn Connaught -> Yulek.

But now, thought of doing Kesas ride, all the way to S.Alam like one of the member stated earlier.

You may find some used bike in www.bicyclebuysell.com

Yes, I'm contactable via PM! cool.gif

I will require the following details before can advice accordingly.

-Bike Size
-Ur Height

This 2 measurement are very important to you before choosing a right bike.
Normally, bike shop would be able to advice you by doing a bike fitting with you on the bike suits your height.

You may try to search some videos in youtube by typing keyword such as bike fitting.
Hope those could help a little bit for you.

I'm a bit weird. Where did you got your bike?

With your height against the bike size provided, the bike seems like not suit you

Anyway there are few way that can help if the difference is not alot.

-Get a longer stem
-Get a lay back seat post
-Perhaps adjust your brake lever according to your comfort zone

user posted image

You may find the bike frame measurement as the above sample image

Measure the TT length and also the ST (sitting pillar)

Ur height almost mine. So, TT = 52-54cm and ST 49-50cm.
Again each individual is different.
You could have long hands/legs/body.
Some adjustment will require.

I would suggest you to check out some fundamentals on youtube to identify what you need to do next.

Good luck!! icon_idea.gif

@ plkvoon

Try to park at the bus / taxi station. If I can find a space there, I'll park. It's safer I suppose.

@kenshiro01
I would suggest you to lower your saddle to suits ur training. lolx...
But If you are already can ride on a MTB, road bike is not an issue.
Venue: Try Tasik Pemaisuri @ Bdr Tun Razak...

Any opinions on Giant TCR3 road bike ? Written off the idea of shipping my bike from the UK due to shipping costs (RM1000+) and worried it could get damanged in transit etc.

Went to a bike shop and TCR3 (alu frame, carbon fork) is available for around RM2500 , does this sound reasonable?

I haven't ridden for over 9 months since I came to Malaysia, only ever in UK where I'm used to having a full carbon Cannondale (Synapse, 2008 model) will I notice much difference?

Of course still need to budget for pedals/shoes etc.

Or any other brand / model to recommend around the same price range? I can spend up to RM3500 for everything ...

Not much exposure on Giant bike.

But with RM3500, you can actually explore few good brand already with reasonable groupset too.

Try Bike Pro for Scott or Specialized concept store.

Giant is quite common brand in UK/Europe, guess not as well known here ....

Will take a look at Specialized concept store, seems close by to where I'm staying

Really don't want to spend too much right now as not 100% sure how long I'll be staying in Malaysia and a bit of a nightmare to take back.

SORA groupset.....you may ended up @!#@#%#@$#!@

I would suggest Tiagra as it is rated very well on most cycling magazine.

Thought your budget is ard RM3k? With tis budget, you can get a tiagra grpset.
Frame: alloy and fork carbon are getting more common now

If you are not so into brand, I can suggest you Polygon Helios 300
Full Tiagra Groupset - 18 speed (besides brake is tektro 350)
Wheelset oso not bad - Shimano
Fork - Columbus carbon

Weight - approx 9kg

My frend bike shop can let go at RM2600 region

Yeah just did a bit of reading about SORA groupset and looks like would definetely be better to go with Tiagra. My budget isn't really fixed - don't want to spend too much, but also don't want to get something crap just because it's cheap and then end up buying another bike afterwards biggrin.gif

I would prefer to go with a brand I know of - never heard of Polygon myself and doesn't seem to be that much about them on the web from searching around.

On the Scott things, the next level up is the S40 which is lighter (around 9.2KG) and seems to use Tiagra groupset.

Bit annoying thing is that the models need to be ordered in as they don't seem to have my size (I'm around 6ft)

Added on January 8, 2011, 12:42 pmcycle from genting sempah McD rest area to Raub, distance approximately 120km. Today was beautiful, slight rain and the road from Bentong to Raub was awesome, rolling with lotsa crosswind, great for time trial training. Never been to Raub, but ended makan at the local Kopitiam. overall the ride was awesome except on the way back when the last 9km was climb back to the rest area, by then most of us already bonked.

Sorry to hear that bro..

Anyway, do u have any lights or blinker on ur bike??

FYI, nite ride, lights / blinkers and helmet is a must!!

This is to catch attention for other motorist coming from both front and behind of cyclist

try not to cycling alone at night time, go with at least another cyclist. i dont know dare to travel far during the night alone, usually I do criterium training at night, whereby i cycle on the same road few loops over and over again but with a high cadence intensity. the loop doesnt need to be long, usually ranging from 1.0km to 2.5km, i usually do about 25km if I am alone, if with a bunch other riders, push it to 35km - 40km but in a peloton.

Hi cyclist, never knew this thread exist for people who cycle.

anyway how much would a regular rear blinker cost? how long does the battery last?

and what light u guys use for front light? cuz my current light require 4 AA batteries which wears out quite quickly.

Went to bike shop again today, think I finally made my decision - thinking of placing an order later this week.

I'm now looking at the Scott Speedster S30 - similar to the S40/50 I was looking at previously but no SORA groupset components , 105/Tiagra

Price can get for around RM3200. Bit higher than I wanted to spend originally ... but if I end up upgrading groupset on a cheaper bike will work out more expensive.

I got my 2 blinkers @ RM25 with battery supply (3V)
Usually the battery can last for months as you only use at night

front light preferably go for cat eye (my suggestion), which offer better brightness

Hi fjb123,

I love to ride around Bukit Jelutong area, can make few loops with 9km each. Else, can cycle around Guthrie to Ijok or Rawang.

no need to stay in PD lar, KL to PD using old road only 150km or less back and forth, I usually do it half a day, start at 5.30am and back at home before noon. makan pagi in PD and go back la. the road to get there is quite rolling.

if u do 20km/h u can finish it before 2.30pm, worst come to worst, that is about 8hours.. can la..

My old pedals in UK attached to my current bike - Ultegra SPD-SL

Actually now it looks like I'll be shipping my whole bike via courier from UK to Malaysia.

Any ideas on import duty of bicycle into Malaysia? If high, I will declare the value as low only.

Guys!
How much would a basic bike cost?
And basic gadgets like helmet guards, or gloves?
biggrin.gif

Newgen...

Your question is too superficial for us to recommend you.

You want a road bike | mountain bike | touring | folding ??

helmet, guards, gloves are very important to protect you from severe damages when you fall from bike or hit by car or something.

would suggest u to pay a visit to few bike shops to have a feel of the items

ghoster,
I guess fix bike that you see out there are towards lifestyle (colorful / attractive). Some might not even have brake!!!!

Road bike on the other hand, focusing on racing. You may want to push your best effort with the bike and evaluate your performance.

These are purely my view point. Hope it helps!

thanks!
i was thinking of using fixed bike for training and fitness because of the fixed pedaling and gear (lance using it too!!! biggrin.gif). also thinking of joining my friends (who all of em using road bike) using fixed bike, is it possible? i mean, is it possible to catch em up? they usually do 60-1++km...

Hey there,

I'm very new to the road bike scene and wanted to ask your opinion.

I live in Cheras and work at Hulu Langat. For many years, I always see people cycling there and suddenly after so many years I thought why don't I cycle to work and back. My office do have shower facility so it don't pose much of a problem when i arrive at work hehehehe ....

My dilemma is actually my budget (RM5K) guessing only limit to an entry level bike. I've visited a bike shop in cheras which one of the person almost everything say it's good. When I look at the spec i get lost with all the terminology. What should I actually look for from a certain brand bike. The gears, the brakes , tires ??

Thanks in advance smile.gif

Just wondering, for some reason(maybe riding alot or old already) my rear wheel is not tight, ie when I use hand and hold it, i can feel it able to move abit. unlike my front one which only rotates but don't move from the axis.

Frame: Pinerallo / Bianchi
Groupset: Campagnolo
Wheelset: Zipp

No problem with clearance- the whole process really a bit annoying/slow having to go through so many steps ... but charges not too bad.

First to enter cargo village need to swap IC/Passport for wristband + pass, in completely different building. Then need to visit MASKargo office to get documentation done and pay charges (THC/Telegram Charge) which is RM30 total. After can proceed to collect the goods, then go to another office to pay FCZ charge (RM5) and another office to file some document EDI? Not sure what its for .. costs RM22.45 After that can proceed to custom office, bike was in the car so they sent me across the road for inspection - officer asked me to start unpack etc. once he saw was used tell me to go back. Duty/tax was 0% - on paperwork was also stated that goods are used, for personal use.

So overall OK - total cost for clearance RM57.45 , if used DHL/TNT instead they do the clearance etc. for you but the price will be at least RM300+ or more for shipping.

Just took me long as never visited KLIA Cargo zone before - no idea where to go inside and not many signs! At least went at night time (reach around 10PM) so not busy at all - no queues!

So if it is a new bike, tax will be imposed? I thought road bike, tax is exempted??

I don't know for sure ... but the main reason for inspection seemed to be for the officer to determine if its used or not.

If there's no duty/tax on new bikes just guess the shipper needs to make sure to use the correct commodity code.

How did UK side packed before ship out? If it is like new bike packaging, it should be fine.

But this issue can be fix, just need to send to bike shop for rectification

Packing wasn't bad, but I guess if somewhere in cargo or during flight it dropped etc. then the wheel get effected easily compared to any other part.

I will take wheels to bike shop to get it repaired - don't think will be much of an issue.

Yeah, feels good to have my bike again - just need to clean it up and buy few bits so I can start using it soon biggrin.gif

Initially just the area I'm staying to get used to cycling again (Damansara Perdana) then will take some of the recommendations from this thread ... Damansara Perdana to Klang, or try some other routes

Have to start from here as don't have a car smile.gif

I do saw some riders cycling kesas solo, i'm one of them smile.gif. Solo is not a problem...juz beware some of the motorcyclist, if feel anything wrong juz take a u-turn or cycling out to the main road(keep left all the time!!!).

Kesas highway usually have some roadies cycling at night on tuesday and friday, around 9.15-9.45pm. i guess they welcome u to join them thumbup.gif Perhaps u can join me, but i'm slow tongue.gif

Finally found a thread about road bike here. hahaha.
Just started doing road biking and now waiting for my new baby.
GT GTR Series 3 2010 road bike.

I think this thread should edit a little more nicer? or more formal? Like the mountain bike thread?

my dad started cycling.what I told him is just set your daily cycling distance and average/day.

Eg if I cycle 12km today with average 28.4km/h, I'll increase the distance and try to do my best increasing the average speed. That'll motivate me to cycle. And also route planning affects your activity too.If you tend to go cycle uphill with 12 km, I guarantee that most of your cycling uphill later will be much easier. smile.gif

I have been seeing many bikes with really thin tyres and the bicycles are usually multi coloured. What is that type of bicycle called? is it good for road biking?

Hi,

The last time I'm in cycling with my old road bike was during my school times. Seems like about 15 years ago.
I wish to join you guys too. Going to get a new Merida Ride 91.
So a helmet and back-light is a must when cycling with you guys???

do keep in mind that Disc brakes are used mainly on mountain bikes ridden off-road, so if your bike is originally not a mountain bike, i don't think its viable to do so...

This is the link http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file...353&sec=central

I think it will good to have a group of cycling advocates sort of, a kind of pressure group that is concern about anything related to cycling. Condition of roads for example to start with.

Guys, what's the difference between a MTB which cost around RM200-400 and RM1-2k for an entry-level or beginner's MTB?
