Information for Amps and Subwoofers
QUOTE When you're ready to put a sub into your vehicle, there are a lot of options to choose from. Once you get past the basic question of the size and number of subs you want in your system, you need to decide on the type of sub(s) and the type of amplifier(s) you'll use. When picking subs, you've got a choice between single voice coil (one set of terminals) and dual voice coil (DVC) models (two sets of terminals). Dual voice coil subs give you more wiring options than single voice coil models. Usually, but certainly not always, dual voice coil models are built for higher power handling and performance. When choosing an amplifier, the most important thing is to pick one with the right amount of power for your subs (you can read more about that here.) Once you've decided how much power you need, you'll need to decide which type of amp to use. For most sub systems, you'll want to choose either a mono amp or a two-channel amp. To get you on the fast track to big bass, let's look at four common combinations of subwoofers. We'll check out the advantages of each, the best wiring configuration, then discuss the type of amp to choose. We'll even show you how to hook 'em up! QUOTE One single 4-ohm voice coil sub Advantages Simplicity, price, and compactness are the big advantages of a single sub system. A single sub is pretty easy to hook up, there are a lot of reasonably priced models to choose from, and it won't take up too much room (although a 15" sub isn't exactly small!) You may not knock over small buildings with one sub, but you can still get a lot of solid bass. The right type of amp to use This is a perfect place for a two-channel amp. By bridging the output of the amp, you'll get lots of power for a relatively low cost. Avoid using a mono amp here - they work best at a lower impedance than 4 ohms. QUOTE One 4-ohm dual voice coil sub Advantages Don't be confused about dual voice coil (DVC) subs - having two voice coils simply gives you more ways to hook them up. In addition to wiring flexibility, the advantages of using one dual voice coil sub are power handling (most dual voice coil subs are built for heavy-duty use) and compactness. The right type of amp to use This is a perfect situation for a mono sub amp. Why? Mono amps are built to provide the most power at lower impedances, typically around 2 ohms. By wiring the voice coils in parallel, we can present a 2-ohm impedance to the amp and get maximum power output. Check the diagram below for how to hook it up. QUOTE Two 4-ohm single voice coil subs Advantages When you're looking for big bass, having two subs makes a lot of sense. After all, sound is just the movement of air, and with two subs you can move lots of air! As before, price can be an advantage when selecting 4-ohm single voice coil subs. Sure, two subs will take up more room, but what do you want - trunk space or bass? The right type of amp to use This setup is perfect for a mono sub amp. By wiring the two subs in parallel (see the diagram) you'll show a 2-ohm impedance to the amp. Mono amps are built for just this kind of situation, so you'll get maximum power output from your amp investment. Check the diagram below for how to hook it up. QUOTE Two 4-ohm dual voice coil subs Advantages Wiring flexibility is the key here. You've got lots of different ways to hook up this combination. With two subs, this is a great way to get the pounding bass you're looking for. Hook 'em up and hold on tight! The right type of amp to use This is a great place to use a two-channel amp. When you wire the subs as shown in the diagram below, the total impedance will be four ohms. A bridged two-channel amp can provide plenty of power at a reasonable price. Get some good subs and a good amp and let it rip! Attached thumbnail(s) |

it's either RCA o speaker cable.. if it is speaker cable then it is for speaker.. and RCA is used between the crossover, amp and HU |

Actually I think to use 4channel to kick my 12 inch woofer because, I wan to add another 12 inch woofer. So 4 channel kick 2 woofer and 2 channel kick my component set. If i use 2 channel amp to kick a pair of my 12inch woofer, I scare it not enough power to kick. |

usually u just get a 2 channels amp bridged it to push the sub, either the amp rms power is same as the sub or slightly a lil bit more is good enough. All is up to your preference.
btw I am a newbie oni not seefu. This post has been edited by Tohsan: Mar 24 2007, 04:31 PM |

Cikai amplifier tak boleh pakai de. I using Debert amplifier. and wan to get MBQ 2channel amplifier.
Added on March 24, 2007, 10:13 pmI need to ask something. I using the 4 channel amplifier, 1 and 2 channel is front speaker, 3 and 4 channel is rear speaker. Now the setup is, bridge front speaker 1 channel for component set and rear speaker bridge for woofer. But, when in my HU, I use fade, but it nothing happen. Fade to front or rear also no different. I thought fade to front, only front speaker got sound and fade to back, only back speaker got sound? This post has been edited by singchaii: Mar 24 2007, 10:13 PM |

your perception of fade is correct.. but the reason y it isn't working is bcz u've set up the amplifier wrongly.. is it ur idea 2 setup the system (the channel thing) urself o is it the installer d0es it? n if i'm n0t wr0ng.. u r listening ur audio in mono rather than stereo..

yes.. he is correct about bridging 2 channel into 1 channel is more powerful.. n this purpose onli serves to whack the woofers.. o from 4 channel to 2 channel 2 power the speakers..
u better check what is the setup first.. cz i thought u said it is bridged to 1 channel for the front speakers.. n also the HU.. by having the model number will let u know how many preout u haf.. n what do u mean wif "rear speaker bridge for woofer".. i don understand at all.. |

hey guys I'm using a 4-way speakers so is it necessary to have amp?
I'm currently using OEM setup, 2 panels on door & 2 rear speakers (the 4-way is going to replace these). My HU is Waja Clarion HU, so if amp needed would 2 channel suffice the setup? not planning install subwoofer though. |

QUOTE(usus @ Oct 9 2007, 11:41 AM) hey guys I'm using a 4-way speakers so is it necessary to have amp? if you feel the sound loud and clear enough then no need amp lar. if you want the low bass sound the you can get a 2 channel amp for powering the sub only.I'm currently using OEM setup, 2 panels on door & 2 rear speakers (the 4-way is going to replace these). My HU is Waja Clarion HU, so if amp needed would 2 channel suffice the setup? not planning install subwoofer though. you can also power 4 speaker with 2 channel amp, but you cant adjust the volume between front and back speaker. this is how to do it: from amp left positive to front left speaker positive, then same speaker negative to back left speaker positive, then back speaker negative to amp left negative. this way you produce 8omh, which sounds lower but better than 2 speaker joint to same positive and negative, which result in 2omh for the amp, chapalang amp sure cannot tahan one. |

Thankz for the nice info. Now need to check my woofer type since I need to get a new amp for it. My cap ayam amp look like cannot blast the amp eventhough it show max power 800W (same as needed by my woofer). Still got confuse with the 2 channel amp and mono block.

Will find out which amp suit my woofer, if branded woofer cost in the range of RM500-RM1k for 800W, is that normal?
Added on December 7, 2007, 9:04 amJust check out the subwoofer model, find this info from web. look for power handling rather than peak power.. it's easier for u to aim for the amp.. n not the forget if it's Dual Voice Coil n the impedance; 4ohm, 8 ohm o 2ohm..
woofer o amp selected wrongly may result something bad |

look for de power rated wif RMS measurement...
those 800W is @ peak.. rm2000+ amp can onli get 150rms x 4... so if an amp that is onli rm600 can get 800W.. wondering how possible is that... this is a simple differentiation n not accurate at all 1... juz a simple reference.. Added on December 14, 2007, 11:51 am2-channel amp normally r stable at 1 ohm... monoblock amp is at 2 ohm... (*doesn't apply to all amp) this is what normally happens.. so if u would to get an amp, plz make sure the specification written 2-ohm stable o 1-ohm stable.. this ohm thingy, u need 2 refer back to ur woofer's impedance This post has been edited by mattchin: Dec 14 2007, 11:51 AM |

6x9 can. i have heard a friend kancil using carrozzeria (i dont know if the speeling correct) 4 way 6x9.. can hear 'stub-stub' from distance. I taught he is using sub. the down side is the sound is mixed.. u dont have clean bass.
i also have this boschmann 6.5" woofer (can hear stub2 from outside already), which i use for few weeks before i upgrade to 8" boschmann woofer.. that 6.5 very nice, u can fit it at the rear without much work as the size is standard.. its going for sale at RM100 for one pair (2pcs) (got punctured on the surround by previous installer which i didnt realize, but still can repair).. any buyers? |

From my experience, i did big mistake and wasted money by installing lousy speakers up front, a capalang 6.5" midbass + a fake focal tweeter. i recommend u to do a mounting job for 6.5" up front, like i did with my own car, it was 5" originally, just add a piece of wood customised to ur door panel, i think most installers can do dat. For me 5" speakers not enuf kick for me. Unless u r ICE fanatic, get a set of component system up front that cost around rm1000. I saw a few forumer selling branded compo at less than 1k. get a 4ch amp and power the front and rear. If u dun plan to change ur HU, i think any compo system around 500 will do for u, cos HU very important in ICE, a lot of diff. For the rear speakers, i dun recommend u to spend too much on it unless u wanna show off. 3 most important stuffs in setting ur own sound stage, 1st $$$, 2nd A piece of gud HU, amp and front compo sets, lastly a gud installer that will advice u nicely on how to set up a nice system according to ur budget and car. PM me if u wanna know more, will be glad to share info and make new friends, cheers. |

nope.... u dunwan the singer singing from the back and not ur front i say stick to ur original speaker if ur not cutting ur door and planning to put ur comps @ the back. Alternatively find a component tat fits ur front.

if the bass n mid is ok, it still ok with me........ coz im not heavy fan of ICE setting, but need a nice n better sound then a standard sound from standard ice in my saga lmst the standard sound make me really 'sakit telinga' i just want a little more bass n mid in my ice.... my prob is, is i put component speaker at rear, can i get better sound than my standard, or it will produce a same result(same sound quality)??? |

it all depends on ur budget, if u get a rm200 speakers, and rm300 amp, maybe it will sound slightly better but for sure louder.

another question.......
how to choose correct Watt?? let say, my HU support 200watt (4x50watt).... so, how many watt must i choose for my component set??? can it support component set with 200 watt??? let say i dont want to use any amp yet(low budget maaa)........... |

if low budget, that's another story d. u will go for a different setup. Look for a speaker set that has hi sensitivity, more than 90dB is gud enough. As for wattage look for one that has less than 100W RMS. This is for ampless setup. But ithink it's not worth it to change cos ur Bose should be doing gud enough. Cos without amp, sound wun be that loud and clear.

i wouldn't suggest cheap amp, cos i've gone thru quite a few cheap amps. Unless u juz wan it loud and dun care about the sound quality, then i think there's a lot of selection.

if ur using stock speaker, no need to get an amp
If ur on budget, get a component tats driveable by HU, then later on only add amp If u got money, get matching component and amp together... doing this u can save cost of installation and time... Cheers |

in most cases u need an amp, except if u use an active sub, it's a sub with built in amp.

I'm using Pioneer DEH1550 with just one Rear RCA pre-output.
Should i invest in cheap pre-amp or cheap electronic x-over? Which is better? Once i use this pre-amp/electronic x-over, do still need to fiddle my Pioneer EQ setting? |

a component can come in 2 way or 3 way component
2 way - 2 tweets + 2 midbass + 2 passive x-over 3way- an additional midrange no woofer at all |

mid bass is a term... same like woofer? or sub woofer? they are still 'speakers' in general.. juz that they play different frequency.

some ppl refer midbass as 6.5'. Some call it woofer.it's just personal preference but just need to make yourself clear. It's typically a 6 or 5 inches speaker.

basically passive setup is very simple. juz plug n play. U juz need an amp to power ur passives to get better SQ. some x-overs can let u set the tweeter lvls, depending on ur requirement. Mo need add pre amp and others, electronic x-overs r mostly for active setup.

I am using the same component, Rogers RG65. How is the sound before and after u install the amp? wondering if there is huge amount of improvement in SQ (but i suspect u never use the component without amp one) |

i did use it without the amp b4.. the sound really have huge differences.. the Rogers tweeters are good with amp.. without amp its just too sharp/high pitch if u do notice..
The mid bass, produces nice tone with or without amp so tats tat.. B4 and after installation of amp makes huge differences.. definitely different. Make sure u get the tweeters on the angle, sound staging.. Im using this comp set wiht alpine v12 amps la.. 55Wx4 only.. |

i see.. if huge different worth considering to add amp for this nice comp. i must say, it is best value comp that i had heard so far. yeah, the tweet are a bit too sharp.. i set my treble to -2. it will be nice if the amp can improve this
mid bass, is there any huge improvement? i was hoping to get more mid bass out of this comp |

dun expect much from Roger's mid.. in bass factor roger's mid cannot perform well, if ur those who listen to soft songs, classical then its ok.. for a bit trance or techno cannot liau..
im planning to change my front comp set after adding my woofers.. will got for higher end models oredy.. |

have u all check where is lacking? alot of people complain here lacking and there lacking first of all....i would check the current setup who says roger mids not good? aint saying its bad or good... factors to consider what is current high pass and low pass? have u installed the mid bass correctly? have u sound proofed the door and how did u do it? have you checked the phase? so again...by asking certain portion no point...some hardwares just dont match with each other...but 70% of the time is due to bad tuning and installation i suggest u guys put down what is ur current system and how it was setup at least that can point to clearer pictures just asking bout is this good or is this going to be better...its hard to imagine lor based on ur previous posting.... stratos...here r my comments Alpine MRV-F340 4 chan amp (2 chan tweeter, 2 chan mid bass) Rogers RG65 front comp set Pioneer DEH-P6850MP MA Audio mid bass for rear Monster cable 4 channel RCA cable this is how i'm going to setup above hardware 1. set HU to pure flat and turn off every feature including EQ, loudness and watever bass/treble enhancement 2. wire channel 1/2 to front comps passive. remove rear speakers 3. sound proof front doors and custom the mdf speaker holders. if got budget go for custom metal ring to hold the mids. 4. change to monster cable rca to something more clean. suggest hisago, wireworld, chord and many other. Monster Cables for sub is good but not front comps. 5. custom make the sub box and i will recommend JL W1V2 which is about RM400. Power requirement is about 150watts. Make sealed box about 1.3cuft to 1.5cuft. after they make the box, use silicon sealent to seal all the joints. make sure no air leakage. can bridge channel 3/4 to whack the subs. 6. put all round 4gauge cables with proper fuses. add caps if u got budget 7. lastly if got budget...change to more powerful amps. i suppose the mrv-340 is about 55watts rms only. u may wanna consider amps like mrv-540 or genesis profile 4 ultra. of coz ultimates like Brax, McIntosh or PHD would be even nicer am suspecting ur current amp not enough juice to drive all the speakers. one way to go active with adding ext xover or change to better HU like Clarion HX-D2. the other way is customizing ur own passives...but u hv to check with rta to see the graph first if i were u...i would maintain HU. get a 2 channel amps for the front...say 120watts to 150watts x 2 channel and get a monoblock for the sub. Added on August 7, 2008, 12:41 am QUOTE(ckmoy007 @ Jul 12 2008, 01:44 AM) some ppl refer midbass as 6.5'. Some call it woofer.it's just personal preference but just need to make yourself clear. It's typically a 6 or 5 inches speaker. mid bass refers to a driver that produces somewhere from 4khz to 40hz range. thats y is a combination of mids and bass.depending on the voice coil, basket, cone material, rubber linings, depth of cone and many factors...that will determine the range played you can actually check through Scanspeaks, Vifa speakers...each speaker..they will show you the frequency response graph so that people can start matching tweets to complete the range example tweets play from 3Khz -12db slope high pass to about 25khz or maybe more mids play from 3khz -12db slope low pass to about 50hz high pass to complete the range....u need subwoofer...which carries more surface on the speaker to create very low frequency from 50hz to 20hz range our ears can sense from 20hz to 20khz...so above is a rough guideline how to achieve full frequency hearing This post has been edited by hushymushy: Aug 7 2008, 12:50 AM |

would not recommend phoenix gold...nothing to shout about
if i were u...remain on passive do tuning first....and check through all installation... if really kenot then only think about upgrading amps... my recommendation is to go at least Genesis, Audio System or Steg of coz PHD, Celestra, Brax and etc etc would be even better i got jalan for Celestra is u wan any... Italian handcrafted....really clean and smooth amp |

ello ICE sifus,
ok. ive been asking around alot for help in ICE. Tried readin the post, but still dun understand bout ICE. my knowledge in ICE equals to my knowledge in addmaths(zero). I was thinkin of installing an ICE in my car. But i dunno which shop to trust, wat brand to choose, wat to ask, wat to expect, market price etc etc. So, was hoping u guys can help me in choosing the brands and shop i should go, wat i should install and etc based on my following preference. 1) Budget less than RM1000 (not planning to go hardcore, just wanna put somethin that sounds better than my current myvi stock speakers) 2) Must be reliable and long lasting (dun want no china stuffs, rather pay for wat i get, but not too much, like a mid range brand would be sufficient) 3) Regarding woofer, and amps or channels and etc etc. Nothing fancy/expensive/big woofers, just simple and nice. 4) Also, Was wondering, my brother has this bigass woofer(with 2 speakers), is there anyway i can connect it to my new ICE? Would appreciate ur help dearly. Have been askin Myvi Forum, they just ask me follow them go install. Aih, dunno wat they wanna install also. Hope u can enlighten me. Thx so much! Teh Tarik on me! |

Get a component set with tweeter and crossover. Size will be 6.5" to enjoy good music because 4" 2 way and 6.5" component set is not much different in price. Install the tweeter in your 4" speaker space while the 6.5" mid bass at your door with custom made speaker bracket. Then you won't felt shitty sound system as the high (voice) can hear singing in front of you while the mid at your side. But this setup is more like a sound staging. |

QUOTE(mattchin @ Jul 1 2008, 07:58 PM) all of them r standard.. depends on ur budget.. normally ppl don use stock spks wif amp.. if u wanna keep ur budget low, add on a monoblock/2channel amp to power de woofer but de bass will cover all de vocals+music.. and that depends on what stock head unit u haf there.. i do using stock speaker ( wira se ) + 4 channel amp(but just use 2 channel oni due to my budget) + pre-amp + an old skull sony cdx V-7800 vcd+mp3 (6 years old services ) player and support more from sony Hi-Fi speaker box(home stock) he he he...budget ICE . and i DIY it self to save more budget,so to RE-assemble the wiring system from battery to power amp ( put d amp behind rear passanger seat ) ,the wire cost just cost me about rm 88,and for me it quit enough for that stock speaker, for me....i'm just changed d amp loc from under passanger seat into trunk bonnet because my child always kick that amp before, and now it safe to stay in the trunk... u r going for SQ or SPL setup? if SPL, it doesn't matter cos it's all about power, if SQ it's gonna sound a lil murky(not clean) cos of extra distortion when in bridged mode.

Hello guys. Have read every post there is in all 8 pages so far. And found a lot of information. I was and still am a complete newbie at ICE. So please be patient with me and explain pls.. I would really appreciate it. ckmoy007 has been very helpful explaining in another thread. So here is my questions..
1) I currently have some lower end speakers hooked up at the rear of my car.. 2) I will purchase a component set.. Maybe JBL Is this ok guys? Install tweeters on dash, mid bass on side panels at door.. If JBL ok pls recommend model/models and tell me why.. and what to look for when selecting.. also 5 and 1/2 or 6 1/2 inch? How to choose? Any can? Or I have to see size at my door panel?? 3) My bro giving me one subwoofer... 12 inch.. I will just use his put in trunk 4) I need advise on AMP pls. Do not want something too expensive.. Maybe up to 500-600? JBL? Sony? Advice pls. 5) Now.. if i get a 4 channel amp.. do i connect to tweeter, connect to mid bass, connect to rear speakers, and to woofer.. ? Or is 1 channel to connect to HU? Or do i need 2 Amps? A bit confused at this part. 6) Right now using some cheap unknown brand cd player with remote i picked up at brothers. I have just only read about how important HU is. So Im thinking I will leave the replacement of HU for last? is this ok? Or is it necessary to change now.. 7) Please do tell me if the JBL sets i listed for component is good.. and also.. advice me on amp and HU.. on what brand to get perhaps... Finally.. how much should my budget be? Im quite tight at the moment.. and new to ICE so i do not want to over do it.. Just something to listen to my electronica and r&b Edit: Found out on JBL/Infinity website that linked me to some site to check what size speakers fit. Says 4" Back and front. So means im just restricted to these for front? How to know what will fit well. JBL GTO-427 4" 2-Way Speaker JBL CS-2104 4" 2-Way Speaker Infinity Ref-4022i 4" 2-Way Speaker Whts the best frm this? 2) JBL is ok, u can either go for GTO or GT5 series cos they suit ur budget. as for size, it depends on ur door panel, if u wan oversize, gotta do a spacer to house the midbass.
3) u need to check wat is the rms of the sub, not max power. how to check rms? ask ur bro, or check in internet for the model. 4) there r ppl in this forum who sells in set, might get cheaper from them. As for amp and speaker selection, i wrote a list down this post for u to choose from... we will discuss bout it later. 5) if u get a 4ch and under tight budget, 2 channel used for front through passive crossover and 2 ch bridged for rear sub. the rear speaker leave it to powered by HU. amp don't give output to HU, it's onli input from HU. output is all to speakers / sub. of course better if can get 2 amps but ur budget will have to jack up higher. 6) it's not necessary to change HU now, cos it's useless to change to rm300+ HU. Try to save up more and get a better one in the future. some reference to all ICE lovers with limited budget (<3k): http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/694244 (Audio Component Package) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/695900 (HU) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/737612 (HU) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/665525 (Rainbow comp set) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/737605 (amp) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/834537 (crunch) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/610005 (Infinity Ref comp set) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/440871 (JBL Set) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/825406 (subs&) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/353140 (Magnat) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/764586 (sub) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/831610 (JVC MP3 HU) http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/606915 (Pioneer HU) |

hi thanks for the quick reply. i will definitely check out on the rms for the sub.. since only 4" allowed on my car.. (checked).. I think ill go for 4" component for front.. My car is Volvo 240 GL
Choices: JBL GTO-427 4" 2-Way Speaker JBL CS-2104 4" 2-Way Speaker Infinity Ref-4022i 4" 2-Way Speaker What u explained made a lot of sense so i think 4 channel amp is sufficient.. and if I have extra money at the end.. I will get one of the pioneer HU you have posted in the last link. |

no prob, if u r going to use those coaxials and not components system, it might be a waste to buy amp. buy an amp onli if u planning to use a set of comps, if not just get a monoblock for ur sub. try to make a spacer for the doors to fit 6.5" comps. but the final decision is alwez up to u.

component usually come with a pair of box-like passive crossovers. they come in various sizes, but if u use 4", u will lack of mid bass. ur system will sound like something is missing in between.
a 2-way component set shud look something like this, 1 pair of tweeters, 1 pair of midbass and 1 pair of passive x-overs. |

So I guess to enrich the sound I will definitely need to cut and widen the door panel?

depends on the midbass magnet's size, if it can go through ur 4" door panel hole, then u just need a spacer to increase height. just bring the speakers to the installer and he will advice u wat to do.

i dunno, try looking around in ur area, go ask for quotation. go to those shops which sells mainly car audio products, they will know wat to do. where do u live btw? if KL, there is KF audio and Lau Stereo but they r a lil expensive. for ur speaker's installation, it does not need hi expertise.

KL bro. only thing im worried is.. about the bigger sized component speakers for the front door.. I dont know much about these.. if I get bigger size will they compromise the space there? or will it look the same.. with just bigger speakers.. but I will do as u said and go to accessory shops..
some say if cut.. it will look ugly.. coz when they cut they put wood or plastic there?? this is the last piece of the puzzle for me. will it look ugly if i cut and fix 6.5" or is it better for me to put something that will fit there 4" ... bridging is connecting 2 channel making it into 1 single channel for more power. look at the first page of this thread for more info about bridge.

Hi ICE Gods,
Need your advice on some ICE stuffs. I have finally decided to upgrade my stock Waja sound system. Have lots of things in mind but am working on a budget and have decided that I would take it step by step. So now, I would need the ICE Gods out there to help me out in my journey to ICE-land... ... 1- I have decided on changing my head unit to an DVD 2-din player. Its an 2nd hand unit but but used only for abt 2mnths+. Is this a wise 1st move, changing the HU 1st? 2- After going through the net I have found that there is this amp 'KENKO KK-1000' & 'KOLE AUDIO QBE-4000' 4 Channel 4000watts amps up for sale at abt RM300+. Would this be an wise decision to buy? 3- Considering, I change the HU first to the DVD 2-Din Player, what should be my next move? Comp set? Amps? 4- I'm not planning to change the whole ICE set in my car at the moment, I wanna do it 1 by 1. Please advice on the right steps to take. Eg: Change the HU first then go on with an good comp set and etc... 5- What I have in mind at the moment for my Waja's ICE System is: - 2 Din DVD Player - Pre-Amp - 4 Channel 4000watts Amp - Component Set (Front) - 2-Way or Comp Set or maintain current stock speakers (Back) - Either 2 x 10" or 2 x 12" Subs + Monoblock Is this set-up good enough for WAJA? Any recommendations from others? I'm planning to change the HU to the 2-Din DVD Player mid this month and go on from then on to change 1 by 1 the others. Planning about RM300-RM500 for each items. Please help me out. |

hi guys, do u all really recommend putting speakers on/in ur front door panel? some time ago i put a decent (cant remember brand...) speaker there, sometime later, the one on driver side kaput already. i think due to the more door close/banging on driver side. so sad. since then i just get cap ayam 4" to replace the speakers, n put inside my dash. me driving wira

A standard fuse is more than good to protect this power surge issue. It's a waste of money. Your installer is trying to 'korek' from u especially in this CNY season.

haha, a system without bass then. no HU can power a sub, maybe u can have the proc. functions but i really doubt it will give u a clear and nice sound. so the verdict is no... must be with amp.
actually if we think properly, our stock system oso direct from HU to speakers, do we call it active system? i really doubt it. |

recently i bought 3050ub + type s alpine component + 4 channel prospec amp ps4.60(1600watts) + mohawk 12'woofer ms124 the question is 1) Izzit normal to use 2 channel on front and rear speaker? 2)izzit better to focus the 2 channel onto my component and the rear take it out? 3) since i use 2 channel for front and rear and 2 more for my woofer, would it be advisable to get another 2 channel amp for my woofer and the 4 channel amp for the front only? i still new in ICE and all equipment above are based on my budget |

usually if u buy the HU from them, the price they charge includes the installation charges. but if u dont buy from them but simply ask them to install it for u, it should be 10 bucks.

By bridging the output of the amp, you'll get lots of power for a relatively low cost. Avoid using a mono amp here - they work best at a lower impedance than 4 ohms. Just need some clarification, as per advise by KidsCode, it says mono amp not suitable with One single 4-ohm voice coil sub. Is it true? if yes I need to change plan liao. |

no la, it's just about power matching. meaning like a 2ch amp (2x100w rms @ 4ohm, 2x200w @ 2ohm), when bridged might get example, 400w rms @ 4ohm. while a monoblock, take an example, DLS Ultimate A6, it produces ~500w rms@4ohm, 780@2ohm and 1200@1ohm. i think in most cases, a 2ch amp will be cheaper than a monoblock, see the logic there? 2ch to power a single voice coil @ 4 ohm is a cheaper way, not to say monoblock can't do the job. just that monoblock is designed to handle low ohm and more power, so ppl might think it's a waste to use a monoblock @ 4ohm.

sound produced might be different, 2ch is class AB while monoblock are mostly class D, altho some are class AB like DLS A6. some says there are noticeable difference in SQ, provided if u have a gud system, or else u will onli hear bass and no difference. if u r using entry lvl setup, a 2ch will be sufficient for a SVC 4ohm sub.

Hi Sifu, I'm planning to get a component set whic are rated at 60W RMS @ 4 ohms and an Amp which is rated at 4 x 65W @ 4 ohms.
Please advise whether the amp's power is enough for the component set. How if I get a component set rate at 120 RMS and bridge the amp's 4 channels to 2 channels to power this? |

PEGASUS has better quality interms of sound and DYNAUDIO was so so bcz lack of mid bass.. in de end, i choose DYNAUDIO bcz the name of DYNAUDIO which i dream since i was in high school... hahaha |

wanna ask (as i m newbie in ICE)
i read the diagram all the diagram showing that there is only one set of component if i installed one set at the front so how about the rear?? put it empty?? or wat to put in?? is it possible a 2 channel amp can power 2 set component??? actually i plan to install 2 sets component but some one saying u will hear 2 sound |

u can put the pairs of component... but scared ur 2 channel amp tak power...
so better get a 4 channel amp to handle 2 sets of components... if ur rear speakers aren't power hungry and still u want some sound for the rear passengers, u may wanna think to power it ur headunit.. |

SQ wise, it's not advisable to put a speaker at the rear cos it will disturb the front's imaging. unless u can tune the rear speakers to a level where it's not audible to the front then ok.

ok thanks for the advice
currently wat i have is 1. mohawk 2 ch amp donno wat model i think is 700.2 some thing like this (to push 10" woofer x 2) 2. mohawk 6" x 9" 3 way speaker 3. pioner HU donno wat model already (last time buy at RM 500++) 4. 2nos of 10" mohawk woofer now i had changed car and wanna put it in how should i set it up??? because i only have lowbudget for ICE actually wat i plan is (plan A) 1. the old amp used to push one 10" woofer (one is enough for me the other one take out - change box) 2. 2 new lowbudget component sets (about RM300 a set) 3. one new 4 chanel amp to push 2 new component sets (Plan B) 1.the old amp used to push one 10" woofer (one is enough for me the other one take out - change box) 2. 1 new component set for front (about RM300 a set) 3. old 6" x 9" speaker for rear (plant to cut off the tweeter - remain the bass sound enough) 4. A 4 or 2 ch amp for the component set and 6" x 9" speaker i think the plan B is cheaper |

my suggestion plan C:
1.the old amp used to push one 10" woofer (one is enough for me the other one take out - change box) 2.1 used comp set around RM500 3.rear leave empty or use HU to power stock speaker. if put 6x9 will cancel off the bass of ur woofer. 4.a used ~RM500 2 channel amp for the front. 5.sell off 1 of the woofer and the 6x9 to get more money for ur project. last question, wats ur preference? SQ or SPL? and ur total budget is? |

SQ = Sound Quality, SPL = Sound Pressure Level.
SQ is u like to listen to nice music while SPL is for everyone to hear, the boom boom style. to make it simple, SQ is Quality, SPL is Quantity. rm700... u can get that GTO but u won't have spare cash to get an amp for it. for rm700, i think u can ask zennn to help u find a focal access. |

yup, just use the 700 for the focal access and run it from the HU first. then start saving up for a decent 2ch amp for the focals for next upgrade.

Hi,
From what i gather from the sifus Currently i'm using a pioneer HU which has 2 RCA pre outs and a component set. I'm planning to get a 4 channel amp and a woofer. I understand that the usual set up is 2 channels for the component set and 2 channels bridged for the woofer. Does this mean that the rear speakers will have to be blanked out? or is it ok to power it with the HU. Will it sound weird coz i get the impression that once the woofer is installed, just kill off the rear speakers coz it won't sound nice. But i guess any rear passengers will then only feel the woofer. Can it still work? Also the guy at the shop did mention 2 RCA will give a fader option for front n back. Not sure he meant fader between the front and rear speakers or fader between the front and woofer. Can anyone clarify? he also said my panel speakers which i think is 5 inch is a bit too small for any difference but suggested to install the amp and upgrade later. But i think having an amp should provide significant audio clarity even if it's just 5 inches....what do u guys think? Alternately, he did also suggest just getting a 2 channel amp to just power the woofer and let the HU power the components(he hinted not much diffrence if power the components) since its running on 5 inch speakers, but i suspect it might be unbalanced. Anyway, it's better to have an option for upgrades right? |

I'm from Miri, Sarawak here and I plan to upgrade my Hyundai Atos (noob car:() ICE. Recently I went to one shop here and the people there quote me a JBL GTO series component with JBL GT5-12 woofer and a Marriola amp. Is this worth it? Sorry i'm a newbie here. Any comments will be appreciated. |

QUOTE(jason_roag @ May 13 2009, 12:12 AM) Hi, good SQ systems usually dont even have any rear speakers. if u feel u need to, then powering it up with the HU is the better choice. in good systems, rear passengers will also hear the front components. QUOTE(jason_roag @ May 13 2009, 12:12 AM) Also the guy at the shop did mention 2 RCA will give a fader option for front n back. Not sure he meant fader between the front and rear speakers or fader between the front and woofer. Can anyone clarify? for fronts + sub, since rear pre out is used for sub now.QUOTE(jason_roag @ May 13 2009, 12:12 AM) he also said my panel speakers which i think is 5 inch is a bit too small for any difference but suggested to install the amp and upgrade later. But i think having an amp should provide significant audio clarity even if it's just 5 inches....what do u guys think? are your 5 inch speakers from a component set, or are they OEM speakers? usually first upgrade would be changing oem speakers to components, then only adding amp and sub. if theyre oem speakers having them powered by the amp could kill it, make sure the gain level is low.Alternately, he did also suggest just getting a 2 channel amp to just power the woofer and let the HU power the components(he hinted not much diffrence if power the components) since its running on 5 inch speakers, but i suspect it might be unbalanced. Anyway, it's better to have an option for upgrades right? I would like to ask is the JBL ori? I mean for this price. Comments are welcomed .. |

oic, 880 for the comp alone? i think it's a little overpriced. perhaps u can consider my boston acoustics. confirm tak kalah the GTO, at least when i bought it, compared with alpine type R and DLS R6A and i chose this at last. if 880 including the sub and box then it's worth it la. ori or not, of course i can't tell u. if the shop is selling genuine products i.e. authorized dealer, then shud not be a problem.

Need advice from PRO pls.
I got 1 pegasus 4 chn wif spec : 4 ohm Stereo: 50W X 4, 2 ohm Stereo: 75W X 4, 4 ohm Mono: 150W X 2. And I got 1 pegasus component set wif spec : 70 Watts RMS, 140 Watts Peak. If I bridge the amp to 2chn which 150W X 2 to play the component set, will it overpush the component set or any better setup can be made. |

bridging is not a good thing thou overwhelming power means more control of the speakers.. bear in mind that after bridging, ur THD will go up.. (THD=total harmonic distortion) then u may loss sound quality..

Bridging will loss sound quality but if I use a amp wif 50rms x 2 to play my 70rms component set is a waste of my speaker?
Usually they say use the amp which more rms than the speaker, is this correct? |

depends on the quality of the amp and style of listening. i've known ppl using a 2 x 30W rms amp to power a 220W rms tweeter, and it doesn't sound bad. but on the other hand, powering the midbass and sub will need adequate power to perform at its max. so it also depends on ur application. but from my experience, 50W rms is quite enuf for a 70W rms speaker. unless u playing SPL, for normal listening 50W rms is gud enuf d.

for a 4ch amp to run sub, make sure sub is single voice coil 4ohm, or a dual voice coil 2 ohm wired in series (4ohm load), this is bcoz most 4ch amp are only stable to 4ohm when bridged mono.

Sifu-Sifu,
In case, my HU have only 2 pre-out. I got 1 electronic crossover, 4 channel amp, monoblock amp, 1 component set, 1 subwoofer. How should I connect them? I thinking to use the 4 channel amp which 2 channel for mid-bass and 2 channel for tweeter ( not using the crossover included at component set ). |

For 2 channel amp with the same brand and same spec, which class should I choose to play my component sets at front? AB or D? What the differences between them?

for front usually class AB amp. Class D amp usually for subs, since they cant play frequencies more than 200hz.
difference is them is just their design, not which is better than the other. its not like in school last time, if clever go class A, stupid go class D This post has been edited by zennn: May 28 2009, 09:02 PM |

But as I understand the class D amp is more efficient than class AB, so the output will better or not? I ady read the spec of the amp, both can play the same frequencies more than 200hz (250hz).

efficient is secondary to the quality of the sound amplified

efficient only in relation to power, thats being turned into sound instead of heat, thats all. recently there are class d amps that are able to play full range, however that doesnt mean its better sounding than class AB.
quality of amp depends on how it sounds, regardless of its design. |

Helo,
This is my first time posting in the thread and im desperatly seeking some help on my ICE system. Soon im going to get a satria neo and after seeing how the stock ICE system works i am 100% going to change it. Im looking for a loud and clear/crisp sound, clear/crisp is a priority but i also want it to be loud which is why im planning on two woofers. I also want it to be surround but im not sure if surround may affect the music sound. Basicly im looking for advice on how the system will fit togeather. i.e. amps, x-overs. I want to be able to adjust the fade and ballance so if im not mistaken i would need a HU with 3 pre outs? One for component speakers+tweeters, one for the mid bass and one for the woofers but what about the centre? <-not sure if that is the correct name for the type of speaker. If anyone can tell me if this system is feasable or if i over looked something please tell me any input would be greatly appreciated BTW i want to be able to watch DVDs aswell so im planning on a Pioneer xxx-xxxxxDVD model, single Din. (i have attached a diagram of the setup, so far just the speakers) please please please help me:D:D thanksssssss This post has been edited by stuart210: Jun 5 2009, 12:33 AM Attached thumbnail(s) |

first of all, can ur player support 5.1? if yes, how many RCA outputs are there? if there's a output for centre then u can install a 5.1 system. can ur HU play active? if u wan us to recommend which comp or amp to get, u gotta tell us ur budget and music preference, too.
btw, i'm selling a set of used Boston Acoustics SL60, pm me if u r interested. |

if i'm not wrong, multimedia system and SQ system aren't the same. first of all, SQ is very subjective, like in ur case, u love details and punchy bass, sharp highs and big bass, while some prefer laid back sound and moderate bass... multimedia system has to be set/tuned differently, i dunno wat is needed to be set exactly but somehow SQ settings might not be suitable for DVD system. if budget is not a problem, i suggest u getting a single din alpine DVD player and pair it with the alpine H701 processor. then u can play full active multimedia 5.1 setup. amps and comp u can decide after u decided on ur HU. if u wan to play stricly SQ, i think 5.1 is not the suitable way to go. u are better off with front 2 or 3way active setup with sub. of course dat alpine H701 processor can handle this job too, supporting up to full active front 3way + sub. dats all depending on u la. my point is the alpine proc is very versatile which i think suits ur needs, just have to think u wanna pair with which HU. other similar products are Audison BitOne, JL Audio Clean Sweep and etc.

oooo i c
ok i understand now better about the set up. But if i wanted to power the sound diagrap that i posted above then what kind of features/outputs would i need to ask for? i want good SQ but at the same time a Single Din (to save space) HU with a screen that comes out so i can also watch dvd. The dvd player is only for occasional use and to display the reversing camera so it has to have a screen with RCA input. i think that it much have 3 pre outs? 1. For the front component 2. For the mid-bass 3. For the woofers This way i will be able to controll fading/balancing rite? Attached thumbnail(s) |

if u wan to setup like ur diagram, best is for SQ setup. i would still recommend the same thing, alpine single din DVD player paired with alpine H701 processor. u can play full active like dat. perfectly suits ur needs as u can change the setting anytime from inside of ur car. the processor has 4 pair of RCA output. 2 for front comp set (1 for tweet and 1 for midbass), 1 for rear and 1 for sub. this setup shud last u for a long time. bear in mind such a setup will require a few amps as u need 7 channels of amplification. pay more attention and allocate more budget to the front system, the rear can juz get a coaxials and a moderate amp will do.
P/S: a lot of ppl using this processor in ICE competition. |

ah ok that sounds like a good plan thanks. just one question though if my budget isnt big enough to cover all that what would it sound like if i skipped the speakers in section "2" in the diagram? if i use a processor whats the advantage of that? then my HU only need one pre-out if using processor correct? but isnt it easier if i get a HU with 3 pre-out alredy? then can adjust the settings straight from the HU?

of course u may skip the rear. then u can use a different setup. u can either use the setup i told u or get a single din DVD HU which has a gud built in proc so dat u can play active 2way front + sub.
processor means DSP(digital sound processor), a device that enable u to do time alignment, electronic crossover, equalizer and independent gain for each channel. u can just google for alpine H701 for more info. it's a very flexible processor. this proc connects to the HU via optical or ai-net. if other brands may connect using RCA but i heard dat the sound wasn't dat gud compared using optical. usually a HU with 1 preout onli is a sucky one. |

1 channel = 1+ and 1- on the amp. 1 rca output/input(not pair) represent 1ch. rca is low level output and output from amp to speaker is hi lvl output. so if u wan to play like ur diagram, u need a 4ch, a 2ch for rear and a monoblock for sub. or in order to save space, a 5ch and a small 2ch will do. if this is ur 1st time diy, then gud luck.

Hi every one sorry to trouble everyone ere but i just came across this wiring diagram and i dont quite understand how te bit highlighted in the red box works. From what i can see there are two channels going into one amp. The Front and Rear speakers. Is there a speacial type of name for this kind of amp that can do this? I thought most smps have only one channel in?
My set up is going to be exactly like this but with two sub-woofers. Attached thumbnail(s) |

2 RCA (1 red & 1 white) = 2 channel on the amp output (2 +ve and 2 -ve).
while on mono amp, most of them combine the information on both white and red RCA into 1 output, so there's onli 1 +ve and 1 -ve on the output terminals of most mono amps(same have 2 +ve and 2 -ve depending on the topography of the amp). most 4ch amps, will have 4 inputs (2 red and 2 white RCA), which result in 4 +ve and 4-ve in the output terminals as they dun combine the signal like a mono amp does. |

this diagram is ok. dun see anything wrong. as for sub, u gotta match with amp. refer to the 1st page of this thread for wiring examples. dvc and svc doesn't really matter, if ur amp can onli go down to 2ohms, then 2 pcs of svc 4ohms wired to 2 ohm will be the best option. of course, u have to match ther power too, u can't be using a 500w rms @ 2ohm amp to power 2 500wrms subs, rite? cos this way, the subs will be getting onli 250w each.

there's something we call Y-cables, which splits the signal into 2. google for more info.

just get 1 comp set will do, leave the rear for the HU to power. then u will have enuf amplification channels. Y cable split ur signal into 2, how the SQ changes varies in different system.

Now I using alpine HU with 2 pre-out, 1 for 2 channel amp to play the front component set and another 1 for monoblock to play subwoofer. all sound settings is nice for me now just the subwoofer is abit low although the HU subwoofer setting is max, should i adjust the gain level on the monoblock to get louder? adjusting the gain level will spoil the sq?

it's all down to tuning. not sure if any of ur HU mentioned got crossover, u can check their spec. bear in mind, if ur sub is too powerful, u might not enjoy ur setup cos of overwhelming bass dat 'cover' the sound of ur comp. dats why gain matching is important in SQ setup.

hi sifu sifu's, can you guys roughly guide me to what i need to do?
i think i have the rough idea already but i just need to be sure about it. currently driving the new saga, with stock everything. and i also have in possession of a 4ch amp, 1 comp set, and 1 xover. so now, i want to get rid of all my stock speakers and maintain my stock hu till i have enough for a decent upgrade, and planning for prolly 1 10" subs for later. should i hook the 4ch amps and get 2 chs for the comp set and leave the other 2 empty first, then i just leave the xover out of the picture till i get a sub? the 4 ch amp (alpine MRP - F240) should be sufficient enough to power 1 comp set and 1 sub right? |

sell the xover and save up for new HU, just use the hi pass and lo pass filters on the amp
can use stock HU with the alpine 4ch first because it can accept speaker level input, no need to buy hi-lo convertor just power just the comps first and later the sub. |

You might want to check your wire connection at the battery and the fuse connection. I have the same problem in the past and was rectified after I changed the fuse. Sometimes, the fuse is not in good condition so current flow is affected hence u may face power discruption.

in car audio, waht u pay is what u get, thats why component set always more expensive than coaxials, and of coz sounds a lot better too.
instead of using amp + coaxials, better use that money just buy component set. add amp when u have budget later on... |

Hi sifus, i'm planning to buy a component set to replace my front speakers. do i need an amp to get better sound quality or just replace the old speakers with the new component speakers?
Can i buy a 2 channel amp to power my front components and let my rear speakers directly connected to the HU? If i do this, is there any configurations i need to do to the fader or others? THX |

lets say if ur budget is 5k, i'll give u an example setup dat fits ur budget. i am not so sure for the prices but it's not very expensive. for HU, get alpine 9887 1.3k new or pioneer P80RS 1.6k new, or u can find some 2nd hand HU like eclipse 7100 or 7200, alpine 9835, 9855, 9812, 7998 oso can and cheaper. for mid end comp speaker ranges from rm700-1200, Boston Acoustics S60, Alpine type R, DLS R6A, Peerless Definition, Focal Access or Polyglass, Eton PRO170, Vifa drivers if u plan to play active and the list goes on. Amp: ~rm1.5 - 2k i suggest getting some 2nd hand amps for cost saving, ask zenn to recommend u some nice amps. dun worry abt durability of 2nd hand amps, gud quality amps are made to last long. then now to the subs, a single 12" sub will do rite? try to get a sub around rm500 then it will all fit to ur budget. just remember to stay away from china made brands and fake stuffs.

abt accessories shop i not so sure, u have to ask the locals. i'm from sabah so can't help u. active setup gives u flexibility in tuning i.e. independent crossover, EQ, time alignment and gain control on each channel, and each speaker gets its own amplification, meaning 4 speakers need a 4ch amp, the passive crossovers of the comp set are not used in this setup. while passive, like the name sounds, using the passive crossovers. not much flexibility in tuning. all these mostly depends on which HU u are getting and if the HU has the capability to play active.

it's better to get a seperate amp for the sub so dat it wun suck up too much power. and usually bridged 4ch might not be enuf to feed a sub unless u get a 150rms sub. i suggest 2pcs of 2ch amp.

most 4ch amps can accept input from a single rca, theres a switch for it, should be written something like "sum or separate"

it's just like mercedes oso got different classes. every manufacturer has low to hi end products of their own. Lanzar i would say it's quite a gud brand for beginners. i've had Lanzar 6x9" before and it served me well. u can check the model at the official website or google it for more info and reviews.

yup it's gud enuf. 4x100w. fake or not, very hard to say. as far as i know no fake lanzars, just some imitation copying its series, i.e. Vibesound. otherwise, this amp shud not be a problem. try to look inside the interior of the amp for visible damage like blown IC or bloated capacitor due to abuse of the amp.

hi.. wanna ask bout setup.. noob about ice here..
just buy a 2nd HU kenwood from a member.. is it got amp? now using it to blast : 2x front speaker (mtx audio) 2x tweeter (jbl) 2x 6x9 speaker (mtx audio) 1x underseat subwoofer (2 speaker inside - kenwood JDM model).. so.. when installing the new HU, i just know that my car previous owner put an amp underseat and install a cross over for the tweeter (jbl).. but he already take the amp out, crossX still avail.. so now how to setup back? do i need to buy another amp? how much wattage? how many channel? running without amp now.. just depend on subwoofer amp to blast.. seem like speaker not getting enough power.. i love the tweeter but sometimes, the low pitch sound.. damn hurt my ear.. anyway to reduce it (pre-amp?).. |

get an amp, the head unit amp is very very small, not enough, especially for the speakers u stated above. and get the passive xover from your friend, look for a 4ch amp to start with, to power the front speakers (mtx+jbl tweet+xover) and the rear 6x9. the underseat woofer has inbuilt amp inside already. once the tweeter is connected to the passive xover the sound will be better..

monoblock is a single channel amp, used usually for subwoofers
u can use either 2ch or monoblock for the sub, all depends on what power is required by the sub and how it is wired, if its single voice coil or double no pls do not connect the 2ch amp to both your components and sub your components will not sound better, and either the amp will rosak or your speakers will if u plan to upgrade to better 4ch amp, u can use the new 4ch amp to power both your front components and your sub. use old 2ch for the rear speakers. |

why not just get 1000 for a 4ch amp, much better quality.
rear speaker just connect direct to head unit, or use back your old amp. 400 and 600 amp will be cap ayam |

i tot u have 1k, coz u said 600 and 400 each amp.
if 600 only i suggest u save up some more la, around 800 maybe can get alpine pre amp depends la what type. if its the normal cheap equiliser type, i not recommended la, make your system noisier. better use that budget for new head unit, nowadays come with equiliser built in. |

What jargons? mind to share?
If you don't tell us what you do not understand, then we also cannot explain to you what you would like to know. As usual, change the front speaker first. |

If front do not have speaker hole, then will need to drill a hole and a mould to hold your speaker.
You mean RCA is it? It is an output at the back of your HU, for connection to your amplifier. Start slowly first, unless you have a deep pocket... |

just extra 2 frequency bands = more control.
if you're buying preamp due not enuf rca, its actually better to upgrade HU instead. capacitor = think of it as power resovoir |

7band better.
Think of it as 7string guitar will play more freq accurately than 5string guitar. HU--->pre-amp----->amp again, if you're gonna buy a pre-amp for freq tuning, you might as well get a better HU with EQ built in. |

if u want sq, then save up some more money, get some good component speakers for the front budget at least 800, run without amp first.
then save up for a 4ch amp, budget at least 800 also rear speaker no need. buy a subwoofer, budget around 500 and connect to the 4ch amp. |

hi guys (sifus here2)
im a total noob in ICE... need help from you guys now... i've read all the way from page 1, but there are a lot of terms i still dont know... huhu... my current setting is HU - PIONEER DEH-5050UB Speaker (front n rear) - stock speaker tweeter - soundstream which is not clear at all, but still better than nothing subwoofer - cap ayam amp - cap ayam recently, i just realize that my sub does not working anymore... so, im planning to change all of it, stage by stage... my 1st stage will be changing the wiring, sub n amp... what should i get...? i prefer SQ, and if possible, i dont want people outside hear what i hear inside... so, a component are pairs of woofer, tweeter n x-over right...? what is that x-over or electronic x-over...? and what is a 2 or 3-way speaker then...? which is better...? my car is viva... budget +- rm 1.5k... btw, what is active n passive system...? thx in advance... ^^ edit: what is RCA guys...? it mention that my HU have 3 RCA... n what is the use of cross over btw...? get a 4ch amp, a front component set ( no need to use your ss tweeter) and sub.
xover in comp set is passive, not electronic xover. passive comes between amp & speakers. elec. xover comes in between HU and amp. 3 way component is better, but much more expensive, plus u need a very powerful amp. active system is when u dont use any passives. all speakers have their own amp. so if u have 3 way system (tweeter, mids & sub) u will have 5 or 6 amp channels. if 4 way (tweet, mid, midbass, sub) u need 7 or 8 channels. rca is the signal cable that goes from HU to amp, or if u have any elec. xover in between, also uses RCA cables. xover is used to separate the frequencies to the correct speaker. high frequencies go to tweeter, midrange go to mids, and lows go to sub This post has been edited by zennn: Jan 25 2011, 11:51 AM |

hpf and lpf are the filter in crossovers
hpf = u only let the frequencies higher than this value pass thru lpf = u only let frequencies lower than this value pass thru another one is bandpass, which is combination of both lpf and hpf so in a 3 way system: front/high out: hpf = 2500 hz = all frequencies above 2500hz goes to tweeter rear out/midrange: bandpass lpf = 2500, hpf = 50 = all frequencies in between 50hz and 2500hz will go to the midrange sub out: lpf = 50hz = all frequencies lower than 50hz will go to the sub |

i see.. thx for the info dude.. ^^
btw, how can i determine a good amp...? my fren has an amp 440w (2c) sony but it delivers deep bass sound from my cap ayam sub woofer... but then, i try another sony amp (4c) with higher 'watt', but it DOES NOT deliver deep bass sound as the previous amp, but the sounds still decent though... so, what should i check to have an amp that can deliver deep bass sound? for now, im planning to get a 4channel amp.. will grab monoblock later though... any recommendation...? i dont know what is the term, but deep bass sound that i mean is the bass that we can feel it all the way to our heart, but the sound it produce is not that loud.. got what i mean...? there are other sw that produce loud bass sound but not so deep bass sound.. |

Hi, I just installed a boston component set( SX60), n two channel amplifier(80W).
The sound play from cd is very very clear n nice, however, when I change to FM, I noticed that there is significant drop in sound quality, really terrible. Any solution? My amp is.connected to the component set, while rear 6*9 connect to hu(pioneer). Haven't instal any sub n monoblock yet. M trying to take a balance between sq n spl. Any solution? My amp is.connected to the component set, while rear 6*9 connect to hu(pioneer). Haven't instal any sub n monoblock yet. M trying to take a balance between sq n spl. |

So basically how to tune the amp?
i had a two chanel amp, which has a lpf, hpf , n cross over (all, high, low) n it is connected to my front component set. my current setup is lpf=20, hpf = x sure (later I check), x over = low, it produce a decent sound for those oldies but not for some rnb song. how to tune for a bälance sq n spl setting? |

QUOTE(amir_tengkorak @ Mar 18 2011, 11:07 AM) Need an amp or not...-> Are you satisfy with current sound? Amp as its name apply, will amplify whatever produced by your HU. Meaning you will get louder sound and maybe more details of the song, if your speakers can produce such details. ...want or not, still depend on if you want more of what you have currently. |

hi guys, I'm about to invest a pair of component set. Currently still using ori. car speaker which I totally find it hopeless though HU is using Alpine cda-117e. Do I need to tune my HU setting? seems like Alpine setting is more for Pro user coz many unfamiliar terms.
I'm considering between Morel Maximo and Helix Esprit E136, any comment between this 2 brand? More towards SQ (jazz, R&B Soul, Bossa) THANK YOU |

Sifu sifu here, need advice..
My current set up HU: Pioneer old hu but just bought P80rs2(haven install yet) AMP: JVC KS-AX4504 (4channel) Speaker: DLS k4 component (4" v tweeter w/o xover) , DLS 226 6.5"(2way coaxial), DLS 1269 6x9"(2way coaxial) Tweeter: VIFA 1" Silk DOme tweeter..(bought to replace 4" component tweeter but now dunno how to set up) SUB: Kenwood KFC w3012 12" My set up: SQ.. Currently set up HU>4ch :(2ch - 6.5"(2way coaxial) + tweeter)(2ch - bridge for SUB) plan to take off the 6x9"coaxial and my tweeter and 6.5"coaxial dont have any passive xover. So what should i do to improve the quality of sound? tuning? as i know that p80rs2 have active xover and how can i utilize it? cz i dun wan buy a passive xover for the 6.5"(2way coaxial)+tweeter... and the 6.5"(2way coaxial) should i replace v a midbass? or still can use it? For monoblock which should i choose? mohawk ms500.1 or jbl cs series 300.1 both also 200rms @4ohm but dunno which one better.. This post has been edited by kelvinbar: Apr 1 2011, 02:27 PM |

if u want to use 2ch for mids & tweets u will need a passive xover
this one normal system la, many ppl use like this, very common, wont kill your amp, provided when u bridge mono the 2ch for amp, make sure its within the amp's specs. this usually means u need a normal single voice coil sub, kenot use double voice coil sub. also check if the bridged power rms enuff to match the sub's power rms prokick i donno, never use b4...neither have any of my friends |

I have no expectation on that Type-R component, until recently I plugged in those into my car temporarily, it's not bad at all..but must do tuning to make it sound good. I'm using IMPRINT profile for that component, upfront bass easily obtained, the midbass is strong and tweeters are somewhat fine after adjusting levels of it to reduce harshness due to speakers not run-in yet i guess..anyone with Type-R components out there to share feedbacks? good for beginner |

Just HU and better quality speakers. My budget is below RM1500. Is this budget reasonable? My Myvi factory setup is just too sucky. Can't enjoice music at all in car. |

Hey guys, newbie here. I'm planning to get a DVC sub and a monoblock. The problem is, I'm confused in the power ratings. I couldn't decide on which amp to get.
SUB: MTX TR5512-44, DVC @ 4 ohms, power rating : 400W RMS, 800W peak. AMP 1 (MTX RT500D): RMS Power @ 4 ohms = 1 x 250W RMS Power @ 2 ohms = 1 x 500W AMP 2 (MTX RT250D): RMS Power @ 4 ohms = 1 x 125W RMS Power @ 2 ohms = 1 x 250W I plan to connect the coils in parallel to get 2ohms. Would it mean that I'll get 1000W from amp 1 and 250W from amp2 OR 500W from amp1 and 250W from amp2? Will the sub and amp work well together? Thanks in advance. |

AMP 1 (MTX RT500D):
RMS Power @ 2 ohms = 1 x 500W You get 500w to run your 400w sub. AMP 2 not enuf power. |

MTX TR5512-44, DVC @ 4 ohms, power rating : 400W RMS, 800W peak. Mean:- Each VC need 200w rms @ 200w rms x 2 = 400w rms, impedance (Ohm) will not effect sound reproduction by sub.. AMP 1 (MTX RT500D): RMS Power @ 4 ohms = 1 x 250W RMS Power @ 2 ohms = 1 x 500W @ 250w each VC AMP 2 (MTX RT250D): RMS Power @ 4 ohms = 1 x 125W RMS Power @ 2 ohms = 1 x 250W @ 125w each VC Above amp 1 & 2 can drive your sub without a problem coz each VC just need 200w rms.. How about for a SVC sub? MTX TR4512-04. If I have 2 of them in parallel, do I get a total power of 500W RMS @ 2ohms?(Connect to AMP 1) or... 125W RMS @ 2ohms?(Connect to amp2) DVC and SVC confuses me This post has been edited by ILikePie: Jul 24 2011, 07:28 PM |

QUOTE(krayden @ Jul 24 2011, 06:06 PM) OSB: How is it that amp 2 will have enuf power? Generally Factory stated 200w is the max power handling... so 125w just less 75w or 5/8 pwr rate.or 62.5% where it within optimal zone (>60%-<80%) pwr required, >40%-<60% save zone & >90%->100% fall under danger zone.... In SQ, we are looking at soft & wide bass without left out deep & dynamic where the bass can easily blend together with mid bass/range... Harder/thumping bass would't give U sound musical at all & deep/dynamic doesn't mean harder/thumping & loud bass..When you say each VC needs 200w and amp 2 only gives out 125w to each VC? so it should be each VC 200w rms. Zenn: errr where got sub 2? |

actually the manufacture rated power are the power that the sub will be working efficiently. If going for SPL, amp power more than sub is a need, but if daily usage, minus 30% is ok. Depend on how you want the sub to work then select the amp will be more practical. if use really low power to feed the sub, might as well buy a cheaper sub....
400RMS sub will work as it is from 250-500 rms..anything below or exceed this range will kill the sub if you use it hard. the RMS rating is the recommendation. Not a must to follow 100%. +-30% is safe :> and for a sub to work nicely for lower freq below 50hz, u need at least 80% of the recommended power. the lower you gonna fetch, the more power you need. Underpowered sub tend to sound punchy while overpowered sub tend to sound boomy. Added on July 25, 2011, 7:11 pmps, get kicker cvr from me if u wan loud sub This post has been edited by howiechoo: Jul 25 2011, 07:11 PM |

QUOTE(Oldskolboyz @ Jul 25 2011, 05:18 PM) International standard practice, use max power handling to inform people from over power... especially in US, everything can sue, claim coz factory not stated properly. Big name like JL Audio also use it.. I think its just a diff in definition. Still need budget.
Your mid level might be 3k, mine might be 10k. |

1st one if you dont plan to upgrade anymore, 2nd one is more versatile in replacements/upgrades, however costs more, and takes up more space, more cables etc.

The ideal recommendation for path to a better sound setup would be following the steps below.
1. Decent HU capable of at least 2 pairs of RCA outputs and crossover control(optional as most amps have it as well) 2. Component set 3. Sound deadening on front doors or at the least minimum, speaker mounting locations, at least double layer(1 square feet on the inner metal behind the speaker, and 1 square feet on the panel where the speakers are mounted) 4a. 2-channel amplifier to power the component set 4b. Add on an amplifier and subwoofer complete with enclosure(box) 4c. 4-channel amplifier, front channels to power the component set, rear channels bridged to power a subwoofer. Note that I didn't specify any rear speaker upgrades as they are not needed in a regular sedan/hatchback setup. Adding on rear speakers will most of the time only pull the soundstage to the rear which is not we want in a SQ setup. This post has been edited by GRexer: Jan 10 2012, 05:22 PM |

if your xover is intended to be used for tweeter then u dont need to put the cap or resistor on the tweeter.

1--disconnect the tweeter
2---adjust the dial for mid lo-pass / tweets hi-pass filter 3---play test tones (e.g 1.5khz/2khz/2.5/3.......) 4---listen to teh midrange if can hear the tone or not branded xover usually accurate so no need to test-------- This post has been edited by malutapimau: Sep 11 2012, 11:44 AM |

Hi guys,
I need some help here on my Honda City 2008 model. I am going to install the following to my car. 1. Pioneer AVH-4450BT 2. Alpine SPR-17S - front 3. Alpine SPS-610 - rear - powered by HU 4. Pioneer GM-6500F - bridged to 2 channel to power the SPR17s 5. Alpine SWE-1000 underseat active subwoofer 6. 0GA power cables 7. Caliber CR-5 RCA cables. 8. Dynamat 4 door + trunk - 1 box 9. No brand speaker cables. I have an extra audio control xs4, is it recommended to use the xs4 and make the system to active and take away the spr's crossovers? Will this be a better setup? I listen to trance alot and would say I like to be in between SPL and SQ. How possible is it to shift the sound staging without time alignment? I used to have an Alpine 9831 but decided to go for one with video. I know it will not perform better than a single din unit with time alignment. Any gurus can help out with this? Also, does using better speaker cables such as wireworld will improve the sound significantly? Thank you. |

2way fullrange = 2way speaker (like tweeter + midbass) that plays full frequency range |

Recently know a friend who taught me some info on ICE.
He does recommend to go for High-Mid-Sub setup than Front-Mid-Sub setup. From my understanding (on what he explained to me), high-mid-sub (would be usually for the 4-channels amp to power up the midbass + tweeters (take out the crossover) and subwoofer either powered by another 2-channels amp or utilising active subwoofer. Front-mid-sub would be 4-channels amp to drive a component speaker set and another 2 channels for the subwoofer. Which setup is more likely to be recommended for SQ setup? As I see, most ICE shop does recommend front-mid-sub setup. Is it because of the cost or it does sound better than high-mid-sub? * Assuming the component speaker set is 2-way. |

(by meter i assume meter cluster/instruments?) sound stage wouldn't be too ideal, i think what people do is just place if higher, and have it tilting slightly lower maybe other sifu can comment |

hi all bro and sifu sekalian,
I am having some problem of connecting my head unit (one pair of RCA) to 4 channel amp. Act, my set up was done by one of the so called sifu at my hometown and he said dat his set up is damn superb whereby his set up with only 8 subwoofer is able to cover another competitor with 12 subwoofer. If found out a lot of setting being done wrongly by this guy. I am using this 4 channel amp to run one set of component at one subwoofer. He used channel a for the component set and channel b for the subwoofer. I found out that for channel b (subwoofer), he chose the setting as off instead of LPF. Act, which one shud be the correct setting for subwoofer? LPF or off? In my opinion LPF shud b the correct setting after going thru ice forum in lowyat. I have drawn two drawing for ur reference. Currently, my set up is connection A but I feel that connection B should be more appropriate. For connection A, i will be getting mono instead of stereo bcs he is connecting the rca (right side) from head unit to channel A for left and right sides. So, which one shud be the correct connection? Connection A or B? Thank you very much for the help!!! |

To sifu-sifu,
Actually at what wattage rating one would normally consider his ICE as SPL setup? I mean there must be some kind of borderline between SQ and SPL? I dont want to waste money on the unused power by buying high rated one. The thing is I plan to get good SQ + decent SPL setup but quite reluctant to go too far as to spend extra for upgrading alternator, adding secondary battery, those huge caps, other whatnot etc etc.. Issit possible? I learnt that grounding cable is a must so besides that I only plan on getting good component set, amps and sub+box as got quite tight budget around 2k at max. So which watt range should I aim, that consider safe for my battery health without those power upgrades? This post has been edited by azyune: Feb 23 2013, 11:35 PM |

QUOTE(singchaii @ Mar 24 2007, 11:47 PM) I using sony HU. Type S. I forget the model. The fella bridge into one channel said it more power to kick my woofer. Then he mai bridge lor. But the component set, I don't think is bridge to 1 channel and i also not so sure.Cause i still can listen stereo sound. Hehe.. I guess not bridge the component. What can i do so that i can use fade and balance function? means can i use a 4 channel amp to push a 12" subwoofer?4 brigde to 1 |

QUOTE(Shortyeyek @ Mar 2 2013, 12:03 PM) Guys urgently, I got 3 RCA HU, 1 set com , 1 set 6x9 and a 12 inch sub n 4 channel amp. Can. Front RCA out can go to channel 1 & 2 of the amp to power the front component set. Then Sub RCA out can go to channel 3 & 4 and then connect the sub to these channels in bridge mode. As for the 6x9 speaker, just directly connect to the speaker output of the HU so not powered from the amp but directly from the HU.Can this item all be a setup? Or I need another amp? Note that this is provided that your power amp has sufficient power to drive the component set and sub, and can bridge. If your amp does not have enough power to drive the sub, then need to get 1 more mono or 2 channel amp to power the sub. Then channel 3 & 4 can be connected to RCA out 3 & 4 from the HU to power the 6x9. |
