you really need to try google a bit smile.gif

but to answer your questions..
2nd hand, depends how long the 1st owner has used it and whether you like to experience the burn in process yourself. the issue about sticking something into your ear which someone else has stuck into theirs is not really a big thing considering you can buy new earpieces.

er4s > er4p > er6i > er6 in order of price, er4s being the most expensive of the ety range.

comparing shure and ety, try head-fi.org, got a few reviews there.

but if you got da spare cash, yeah try the one in the picture alamaklor posted.. tongue.gif its about us$900

it's the reason because u have never used a canalphone (i presume), never auditioned it before, and dont have the chance to do that, it's best to get a sec hand to try it out and you can always sell it back around the price you bought it with minimal lost. but of coz, if u got the moolah....then forget about it...and should just get the UE10pro.

threads merged. have PMed threadstarter for change of topic name. lets use this thread from now on for recommending and suggesting earphones. as usual, please refrain from one word/model/brand answers. as much as possible try and justify your suggestion with some useful information.

bulk buy in lyn got a guy selling, mx500 <rm100, mx550 i think slighly higher.

people generally comment mx500 more bass.

you are basshead? then u might want to check koss ksc75, clip on hp. you can buy it in low yat plaza(ipod shop outside, or search inside), klcc(one of the gadget shop)

you can get it under rm100.

i owned both mx550 and ksc75, prefer mx550 when listen to vocal. koss more harsh relatively, but definitely offer more bass.

i had read the review of Shure E3c and Etymotic ER-4p.
it seems that the review favors E3c more that ER-4p.
as for the ER-4p it is more difficult to get the "sealing" effect and the E3c provide better comfort compare to the ER-4p.
http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=74863

and the review of ER-6i and E3c http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=121808

so, i guess E3c will be better to me as i m going to use it as an isolation when i m taking bus back to my hometown. and comfort is a point i m looking for.
but after all, i would like to ask that had someone tried both model?

i have a Koss Porta Pro so how is it when compare to the Porta Pro?

@yanjinowa

I think it's not really appropriate to compare porta pro and the other 2 buds. As porta pro is a headphone, not a canal phone. The other 2 provides isolation whereas porta pro doesn't. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

hello, guys.
i had made up my mind to get the etymotics ER-4s, as my fren can get it atthe price of USD$190.00. so i guess its a goodbuy after seeing the price of E3c at USD$120.00 and ER-6i at USD$99.00.

now i m waiting for my fren to come back.
then i will get the ER-4s pair with the RH-10, wondering how will this setup sound.

US$190 is a good price! where is your friend getting them from? do share tongue.gif hope your RH-10 has enough juice to drive these earphones, as they are rated at 100ohms. get the most out of your setup by using the lineout on your md player and hooking it up to a portable amp perhaps.

erm, is the er-4p and 4s the same?
coz i can find no difference between them.
and the amp of the RH-10 not enough to drive the ER-4s/p?
i tot the er-4p/s is mean for portable.

*jz find out that there are 3 versions of ER-4p/b/s.
one more question, p or s to get?

The ER-4s has a nominal impedance value of 100 ohm compared to the 27 ohm of the 4p, which mean that the 4s will be significantly harder to drive than the 4p.

That said, 100 ohm isn't impossible to drive with a portable, though it might not be at its best without the benefit of an additional amplifier.

If you plan to drop some cash on an amp, then the 4s should be a safe choice, but if you know you don't ever want to use an external amp, then stick with the 4p just to be on the safe side.

What's more, you can convert a 4p into a 4s should you want to at a later stage, but not vice versa.

forget the 4b. either go with the 4p or the 4s. if you are 100% certain u wont be getting an amp, the 4p would probably be a safer bet. regarding using them as portables, i see quite a number of people on head-fi using the 4s for home use and the 6i for their daily commute.

actually, i m still confuse at this moment guys.
cos head-fi review got list "p to s cable", wat the heck is this?
its making me confused.
anyway, the design is definitely bad compare to er-6i or e3c, but compare to the output of the quality i guess this should be the one to get.

actually i plan to get it use outdoor. but guess that i wont be using any portable amp, becoz i cant find any good one like the cmoy amp in Malaysia.
or can someone build for me?
really scare that the bass is lacking when i use it in bus trip.

The P to S cable is for those people who buy the ER4P, once you use that extra cable, it changes the sound characteristics of the ER4P to match the ER4S exactly.

It's really hard to decide unless you hear all of them with your setup.

considering your situation of using earphones with a portable setup but without an amplifier, i'd go with either the er6 or the shure. i chose ER6 over ER6i cause the 6i is white and i have bad experience with my white EX71SL and the white cord getting all grey and dirty. also, the ER6 has a more accurate frequency response than the 6i (i like to listen to music the way it was recorded and not having any coloured sound from the earphones).. of course, if u are a whitey person, then by all means go with the 6i smile.gif if u got the extra money to spare, just go for the ER4P + the P to S converter. that way, u get the ER4P and if u feel like trying the ER4S sound, just hook up the converter and there u go.

just to let you guys know, the ebay seller "idealsound" is affiliated with www.discountheadphones.com and they are selling the ER4s earphones for US$180 which is really well below the retail of US$330. i used their "offer best price" option in their auction and gave an offer of US$170 which they declined but messaged me saying they would sell for US$180. of course, + US$40 shipping international sweat.gif

oh btw, i have a feeling that (based on some reviews) the so called ultra high detail on the er4 is actually the ultra crisp highs...= super bright phone. it is also said that it is quite bassless...got a feeling that it is even brighter than the er6...man...ear piercing ouch!

WTF?!?!?! US$40 for shipping a small little box?!?

What, they overnight it to you or something?

@yanjinowa,

If you're interested in getting the ER-6i, then go to either headroom or earphonesolutions and try to get them to price match with Buy.com's USD81 (plus coupon) offer. Plus shipping, it should set you back around USD100 or so, unless you plan to load up on filters/tips/etc.

I think the ER-6i is a great way to get to know if you dig IEMs at minimal cost. It's good enough to tide you over if you like it before you start itching for the ER4 or higher, plus if your source is less than fantastic, it should be as far up the ladder you want to go before LDMR starts to skew things towards cost rather than benefit. And if you find that you don't like the whole 'sticking things into your ears' business, you'll probably find that it'll be easier to offload RM400 earphones than RM800 ones laugh.gif

How big can the box be? I've seen the ER-4s retail box, just a little larger than the one on the ER-6i, and it can easily fit inside a padded envelope.

Don't tell me they try and stuff it inside a Jumbo Box?!?

it's at least 3-4 times the size. the er6 can be shipped as document, the er4 must be shipped as parcel smile.gif and they do use larger box with cushion for added protection.

Find what? The Er-6/i?

If you mean those two, scotty the moddy is selling them so click on the link under his posts to find more info.

As for the ER-4, nowhere that I know but I'm sure if you talk to scotty that he can probably hook you up with a pair.

If you plan to order them online, check out HeadRoom, Earphonesolutions, DiscountHeadphones, etc.

I saw both the ER-4 and ER-6i in Bangkok and the retail box didn't look all that different. That was when I wondered how tiny the ER-4's toolbox must be to fit in the same box.

Of course, I didn't bother to look too long since they were going for about 7500 Baht just for the ER-6i yawn.gif

the closest resistor i have now is 100ohm, 1% tolerance. can be hand matched for both channels. That will make the er4 around 130ohm, as oppose to 100ohm of the er4s. shipping back to msia is RM10-12. the adapter...cost around 20usd + shipping if u get it off from someone else in the states though. i dun have any pricing yet since i dont have the resostors for perfect cloning of the adapter tongue.gif

Find what?

I send an equiry mail to HeadRoom few days ago but no respond yet...

Online purchasing must through credit card? I'm noob in Online shopping:sweat:

No worries. Online purchasing is as safe (or as risky, depending on whether you're a half full/halfempty kinda guy) as retail buying, if you take the proper precautions.

I buy most of my gear online as it's often cheaper even after you factor in shipping and most times, I find it a lot easier and more convenient.

All audio equipment is taxable in Malaysia.

If it's sent in via FedEx/DHL/UPS/couriers, chances are you might get hit with import duties (round about 10%, IIRC).

Packages via mail rarely, if ever, get taxed but takes longer and are at higher risk of getting tampered with or lost (though it's never happened to me before).

Cmoy amp good meh? It's made up of less than USD10's worth of parts and can be built in 15 minutes tongue.gif Maybe add 2 more bucks for a tin of strepsils.

I have the ER-4Ps that I use with my iPod mini. Note that they come 3 sets (if I'm not mistaken) of silicon eartips and foamies... if you're having trouble with the silicons then just use the foamies. I personally use foamies for a better seal - they give you better bass too.

All the ER-4 models have identical drivers, it's just the cable which is different. I had my original cable (the "rubbery" one) broken, sent it back to Ety and within 2 weeks I got them back with the new braided cable.

A Cmoy with generic parts can be made with less than USD15 easily, especially if you "mass-produce" and buy them in bulk lah. I have a cmoy and meta in KL, but I did put a fake alps in as well as silver plated ofc, and IIRC it was less than AUD40 in materials... but my 2132s were samples tongue.gif

lemme highlight the important points. it is not possible with vishay dale 1% resistors, panasonic/nichicon/sanyo oscon caps, panasonic pot, printed copper clad board (ugh...not with those universal boards XD), non-free opamps, shipping cost, +*PROFIT MARGIN laugh.gif u know...if you take china stuff into account...it could be even cheaper(with uber generic stuff LOL)...and how much is the grado RA-1? 300+USD retail? LMAO.... shakehead.gif

EDIT: *added an important point.

Why would you want vishays in a cmoy? By generic parts I meant radioshack stuff, which is what most people who make and sell these for profit would use anyway. Only PIMETAs get spec'd with vishays and branded caps, but if you don't take shipping and profit into cost the real worth of a cmoy is only 15 bucks. And compared to a mint/meta/pimeta/ppa it does sound 15 bucks.

I really recommend anyone who wants an amp to get a PIMETA or PPA instead - it may cost more but the improvement in sound quality is enough to justify it. Not to mention that if you ever want to tweak it with minor upgrades (rolling OPAs, stacking and such) you could, since doing so with a cmoy would get you little improvement.

why not vishay? is a cmoy too crappy to have quality components in it? I never settle for less smile.gif

Having vishays isn't going to make your cmoy sound any better.

Advantages of higher grade resistors are:

i) They are matched closely, meaning Vishay gurantees that they will not go off by more than +/-1%, meaning if a particular resistor is rated for 10 Ohms it will not be more than 10.1 or less than 9.9 Ohms. A pariah resistor might go off as much as 5%.

Most people aren't going to pair a cmoy with top tier phones, ie. Stax, K1000s (not like a cmoy can power these anyway), CD/SA3k and of course your HD650s. No one is going to notice that a 5% difference in left/right channel resistance with their PX100s. For a piece of mind, you could always match resistor pairs, if you had a whole bag of resistors that shouldn't be a problem.

The same reason applies as to why you wouldn't need to use Blue Velvet pots. If you insist on "quality" components, why not make a matched step attenuator for your cmoys? wink.gif

ii) They heat up less, and heat is known to alter resistance values for the resistor, making them truer to their rated values vs pariah resistors.

A cmoy is designed to be portable, hence most of them run on batteries. There is not enough current to significantly cause the resistors to heat up.

So back to your original question, IMO, yes I do think a cmoy is too crappy for quality components. smile.gif

huh.gif *shrugs*

A cmoy was made to be cheap, so putting quality components into a cmoy while pushing the cost up defeats the purpose of the design to be simple and cheap.

Whatever floats your boat I guess. A Wira with Evolution mods (ala 4G63) is still a Wira, if you get what I mean. There's only so much you can do to improve something that was meant to be for the budget minded.

Zzzz. There's no difference lah. Cmoy is to weak to power higher end headphones. The circuit is so simple, the parts for it are available everywhere unlike PIMETA/PPA etc where most people will have to order the PCB. Cmoy is really to help people without a background in electronics build their first amplifier. In other words, it makes really little sense for someone to actually buy one.

And the parts I used for mine were not exactly super cheap, afaik the chinese Alps is actally comparable with the real thing, minus the stupid stepped action they tried to imitate.

Resistors make very little, if any difference in sound. The capacitors, OPA and workmanship are the ones that make a difference in sound. The only part of the resistor that would matter is the wire and material used, but that's not even 1CM long so it becomes rather insignificant.

Taken from Tangent's website: http://tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/parts.html
QUOTE
Are 1/8W Resistors Sufficient?

I spec 1/4W resistors for the generics above simply because they're the most readily available sort, not because the CMoy amp really dissipates 1/4W anywhere in the circuit. Even if it did, the Vishays are Mil-Spec resistors, which means that the tests are done at higher temperatures than regular components. At the temperatures this amp will see, the RN55s are effectively 1/4W resistors.

The resistors in a CMoy amp that see the highest load are the power supply splitter resistors. With the highest supply voltage you're likely to use - 30 V - these resistors only dissipate about 50 mW. Therefore, even 1/8W resistors are adequate for all aspects of the CMoy design.

lol, that's really like using a 500W PSU for a PC that has only a non Prescott CPU, 1 HDD and 1 DVD-ROM.

If you happen to drop by Head-Fi (I don't go there much anymore, the place was much better before all the nice guys left), check around to see who pairs a cmoy with their 400-dollar-or-more headphone in their primary rig.

why usb? why don't get a normal headphone with normal earphone jack? most of the computer with capable to play sound has a built in earphone/ line out jack. even notebook.
buy one with earphone jack can let you connect to some portable player too.
consider it. perhaps hp890 or hp895.

If you already have a good soundcard, most probably it will not sound better. Having audio processor and amp integrated with the headphone is redundant so why pay more for that? I believe the chips inside the headphone will be inferior than in ur soundcard.

my advice is , get a splitter or an extension. I'd prefer an extension so you can switch the plug with the speaker. Using splitter with a speaker can make ur headphone under-powered

I've posted this on mikechai's bulk sales thread but I thought that I'd try my luck here since all the gurus hang out here. thumbup.gif

Which of these 2 headphones will be better for my usage, assuming that cost is not taken into account. I use it primarily for soft music/ classical/ jazz / great-vocals based, ballads/instrumental wub.gif ... and sometimes the ocassional soft rock and pop.
Not really into alternative/ heavy metal stuff.

Was hoping that someone who has tried or experienced both/either of these models could help me out. I have another thread asking about the HP900 but seems like not many people knows of this model (obselete?). And from the feedback i got, it seems like the HP900 is not really recommended. So, i was wondering what about these two models?

P/S: I hope it's alright to post it here as a new topic. The mods please feel free to help move it to somewhere else which they feel fit. Thanks notworthy.gif

i have tested both. and i listen to mostly jazz/acoustics/soft rock and some pop which closely resembling your taste of music. and my advice is, get the SHP-895. in fact, i'm telling you to keep away from the SHP-805. tongue.gif

the bass, mids and highs on those 805 is accepatable considering the price (which is half the 895), but it lacks depth, stereofield and soundstage. really, the depth is just not there. you won't get the sound that you will get with the 895.

the 805 is also brighter than the 895, and is easier to drive compared to the 895. even my Apacer USB MP3 player could drive it quite well compared to the 895. and while the 895 would definately benifit from external amplification, the 805 would stay static.

the 805 is lighter than the 895, and doesn't clamp as hard as the 895. but for the sound that you will get, i strongly suggest the 895 over the 805.

Have you tested the HP1000, btw? Is it a worthwhile upgrade over the HP 895?

Does this mean that the 895 would definitely need external amplification? If it is used with a portable player (discman, mp3 player) without any external amplification, how is the performance?

Considering that i don't have an external amplifier to drive the headphones, will the 805 and the 895 still have a noticeable difference in performance? Or will they be of no difference and i would have wasted RM110 tongue.gif sweat.gif

Er, the 895 and 805 seem to be cut from the same mould, i.e. aren't they identical, size-wise? Anyway, I had no issues driving the 895s with my Audigy, Prodigy or MP3 player. Still had enough headroom.

i have no idea. never tried the HP-1000, but it's really tempting. anyone that have tried the HP-1000 and SHP-895 wanna give some opinion? with amplification of course, since HP-1000 needs a good amp to shine.

overall? it's good. really, give it some burn-in time, around 40-50 hours and the sound will definately get better. for half the price of the SHP-895 you wouldn't get half the performance of the SHP-895.

what soundcard do you have in mind of pairing it with?
from my experience, yes, it will. considering that you don't plug in it Chaintech AV-710. even an Audigy/Audigy2 ZS (that has internal amplification) would be enough.

nope. the 805 is smaller, and is oval-shapped. not to mention that it's lighter, a lot lighter. the 895 is kindda rounded shape.

if you wanna have a portable can that you could wear on the street and not look so dorky tongue.gif , get the 805. the Audigy/Prodigy does have internal amplification right? and as for the MP3 player, some couldn't drive it well enough.

you can barely get anything that is listenable with RM100. some cheapo philips perhaps? most of the more accurate sounding phones would cost at least double the price. the grado sr60 should be around RM280 in msia, yeah, it's almost 3 times your budget, but if you ever compare it to the xd200....you will know what I mean by that the xd200 sounds like pooooooooo

Spending RM500+ for a headphone is overkill for me as I only use it during weekend night, when I'm playing games, watching movies or listening to music. So, I would like to spend <RM200. Here's my criteria:

- Less than RM200
- Balance between treble & bass, as I always play games/watching movies and listening to music.
- Don't like headphone with "light" sound without the bass.
- I'm using Audigy2 ZS without any headphone amp.
- Would like headphone or full size headphone, not ear bud.

I wonder if Philip HP805/895 or Koss Porta/SportaPro can fit in or not? or am I hoping for too much?

Please provide me with some guidances. Thanks.

Hi all, Just wanted to ask if there's any recommendations for a sealed headphones? My price range is between RM 200-Rm300.

I currently have a AKG K 24 P & Koss KSC 75 to use it at home or quite places. Need a sealed one so that people can't hear what i'm listening when i'm out.

Thanks in advance. Newbie here.

I find it hard to enjoy good music when im outdoor. the only way is probably with really good IEM, but they cost alot and the sound quality is often, I belive, worth less than half of what you'd pay for it. I had owned 3 portable phones so far, senn px100, senn pmx60, and ety er6. the er6 cost rm400+ retail, and to me, the overall sound quality doesn't worth more than RM100+. I prefer the px100 over the er6 anytime. the px100 is around rm200 or less, they are good for portable use, and they have the higher-end senn house sound but unfortunately, they sound like crap when you compare them to the grado sr60, which should be around RM100 more than the px100 (still within your budget). the px100 is open, but they don't leak much. I've read comments on people saying that they "leak like hell" and apparently, they havent heard anything that really "leaks like hell" (e.g. senn hd500, 570, grados, and etc)

the px100 or koss ksc75 should be good enough for portable use, and within your price range. they leak, but usually people around you would only be able to hear some "hissing sound", that's all. you can literally hear "lyrics" with the hd570 laugh.gif. unless you intend to spend alot of a good pair of IEM, these should be adequate.

EDIT: wait, I jsut re-read your post and u say u are using the ksc75 @ home? heh....get yourself a pair of grado sr-60 with that budget and bring the ksc75 out.

^ go see Snufkin, he's on Head-Fi... he has a shop selling headphones/amps and other related equipment somewhere in Leederville.

I can get the address for you if you want. He'll let you demo the stuff, that really helps you decide for yourself what may suit you or sound best.

I am using HP895 right now, listening to all kind of music...except the trash, death metal..phew..
Anyway...frankly I don't like big headphone, and the HP895 quite big...XXL..
Sound wise...its really additives...there are time that I feel I wanna sell my headphone just because it looks bulky, but after listening through some song..like Siti Nurhaliza..just like she's singing infront of me, same goes to Natalie Imbruglia-Counting down the Days..and the pop rocks sound of Kenny Loggins, Danger Zone soundtrack from Top Gun..oh no I can't sell it. Its shine even drives by Audigy ZS.
Previously I had a philips headphone that only cost around rm55, and after 5 years of trashing it, and its a good upgrade though.
So I really recommend the 895 for that easy feel sound. Beware that the bass not so deep, so trance song so-so only.
Cheers!

I can say buying a headphone is more difficult than buying a 2.1 speaker in term of testing. most of the shop don't provide a sample headphone for you test the sound and also its comfort level. So need to rely on the shoppers hearsay.
I bought my HP895 below RM200.00 after reading the review in the mikechai's bulk order thread. He offer various model of headphone under Philips brand name. As I'am using HP895, and I am listen more on pop and slow rock, maybe it suits your preference.
Go and check it out.

Hi,

I just got a Creative N200, and listen to classic rock, like hendrix, led zep, cream, satriani, etc. I would like a decent earphone with a 20 -20000 Hz response range, and i saw a philips sbc he 571 for 60 bucks. I'm on a low budget, and anything which is better than the standard creative ones would do for me. I'm not a disco/technohead or whatever, just need to hear the instruments clearly.

Thanks!

The bass is what lacking in HP895, for me it sounds too sweet and harmonious, not really to punchy-..by compared it with Altec Lansing VS4121 and aego2. Maybe it cannot fulfill basshead requirement. But it balance it with a clear separation of instrument and clarity of vocal's singer. However, it still enough to enjoy trance song like alice deejay, kate ryan..etc.
Perhaps u can raed a review for HP890, the predecessor of HP895, which get a good review for it strong point in bass.

hi, can anyone recommend me a good earphone for around RM150 ?

i'm currenly targetting the SONY MDR-EX71 because of the good feedback of it's good bass (yes, i'm a bass head) but heard some complaint from the user that complain about the cord is too lengthy and the materials that used to protect the wire is too weak that even have a user tear it off within 2 days of using.

I'm going to pair it with my SONY D-NE900 Mp3/ATRAC3 Discman.
I'm currently pairing it with MDR-E805 which is totally crap.

Please advise....

I've got MDR-EX71s and I have to say the cord really is too long. I've been taking care of mine but the cord leading to the left driver has been damaged a bit, pinched in. They look nice and they sound great, but the earphones are a little delicate.

Good bass? The MDR-EX71s are more geared towards treble IMHO.. I find that you have to adjust them in your ears for a while before really getting the bass.

Can anyone recommend to me headphones for max RM250? I'm thinking of Sennheiser HD212 Pro, checking to see if I can order through Mediaplex in KLCC.

hmm...i thought i've been reading all the while ppl praising for the bass for EX71 ? and from what i've read is that the one that balanced in treble is EX81.

how is the quality difference EX51 and EX71 ? does EX51 offer any better bass or EX71? but EX51 seriously have even longer cord compared to EX71.... especially when you connect it to remote controller

*Edit, checked out SONY Style yesterday and found out that EX81 is available at malaysia

I'm not so much of an audio nut wink.gif No idea what quality is like between EX51 and EX71 as I haven't had the opportunity to test EX51. I can tell you that EX71 are solid performers, crisp sound. I just get tired of having those things in my ear canals.

The HP890 does not have active noise cancellation.
And in my opinion having owned and used a HP890 for some time, those Creatives are no competition.

From what i've read, those Koss are really crappy
I'm using the EX-71 right now, not too bad, although a lot of the audiophiles have rated it badly tongue.gif (try searching in head-fi.org). Should be pretty good if you dont have very sensitive ears and you're not too picky

Are u looking for canalphones specifically?
If not there might be some better choices within this price range that arent canalphones

haha alright agree with u there
but considering that kinda price range, its not really fair to compare with the real deals tongue.gif

ksc75 seems to be pretty good based to the user's reviews and oppinions, should be a good buy
i think clip-ons are okay with glasses, nothing can be worst than behind the neck headphones

mail Koss and claim a new one under their lifetime warranty. When asked how it broke, says it just broke suddenly with no apparent reasons tongue.gif

ei, i'm also contemplating getting a ksc75, sicne they are only around rm70. but personally i dun like clip ons, they are really uncomfortable to me. I've never heard of the ksc75, since it is said that the driver is the same as the portapro, the bass should be quite heacy as well, but clip ons have less clamping pressure and i guess it should be tad less than the portapro. I've heard both the portapro and px100(duh i own one tongue.gif), and I think the bass is pretty overwhelming. but it's a fun phone. When I put on my er4, the detail is sweet, but sometimes....the bass is really a let down...especially with light bass or moderate bass songs....I was always hoping....damnit....where the f is the bass...

edit: wah lau...look at my typos....even got "'s" after "after" LMAO

im quite indifferent between the sound quality. They are quite similar. But I find the portapro very tedius to use, the way the band extend and the silly pressure adjustment switch.

How does the Sony EX-51 compare with the Sony EX-71? Or is the level of difference so staggeringly huge that the lower price doesn't make up for it?

By the way, how well do these canalphones seal off sound?

from what i've read, they both use the same drivers and the only difference is how they're fitted into your ears
same goes for the NX-1
should sound pretty much the same

Hi guys, bought a Shure e2c when I was in the US, nvr knew where to get them here. Generally it's awesome..comparing it with my PX100 you can definately find more details and the bass is excellent for a earphone. I want to know where I can get replacement foams here in Malaysia - preferably in Penang. Also, where do I get Shure's in Malaysia as I am thinking of getting the e3c.

i think theres a store at lowyat, i think the 3rd or 4th floor, there a big shop where you can go in, they sell tech stuffs, near the front they have a showcase of sony earphones, then farther inside theres a collection of sony, koss, sennheiser, philips etc.

bluetin quite okie ah(pay via rhb), wide selection. I only saw ATH hp in best denki, but very limited choices.

Last time i saw in av exhibition, there is a local distributor for ATH. But i saw their price on the so call high end ad700 (they claimed) doh.gif. I think can buy ATH better model. Their promoter knowledge on ATH hp also up to AD700 only. Well i rather check online and compare the price. Local dist sometimes cut throat only and yet only carry few models which are not even discussed in audiophile world. Lame!

I guess the choice between ath and koss mostly rely on what kind of music you like.

I have the ksc75, if u use it to listen to techno or rock, it's okie. But if you use it to listen to vocal, quite bad. At least mine, they sound quite disperse not focus.

Heard from other forum, ath is expert in vocal playback especially female.

Just saw ck5 is on sales in bluetin. CK7 release soon !!!

The main difference btw px100 and px200 is that 100 is an open phone while 200 is a closed phone. And px100 is a sucessful production while the latter is a failure. The best it to try it for yourself. I think the price of px200 should be around RM 200-250

Mx500 and 550 is produced by senheisser. Under RM50, i doubt u can get a pair of decent buds with that. Good luck with that. Maybe u can try ur luck at LYP.

You can't compare SHP 895 and the px100 as the previous one is a home headphone while the latter one is for portable use. As a user of px100, I would say it's worth the price paid, and it's really portable.

Certainly, the 895 can produce a better sound field as it's bigger. Why not try the grado SR-60? good phone for home use.

90 buck's just not worth it, you can actually get them on ebay for RM50-60 shipped to your door. One thing though, it was said that the mx series die pretty quickly, just like the ex-71

actually, all earbuds and IEM have pretty short lifespan, you'd be very happy if they last for more than 5 years with products made these days. I belive on average, they last about a year or a little more than that, depending on your usage. If you're unlucky....they'd die in less than a year. I dun think earbuds are worth the price we pay for, I'm actually very reluctant to buy IEMs as well, but I'm hooked onto what they could do. I'm gonna get rid of mine before sh1t happens.

My suggestion is you nail down a particular brand then start from there, audio shops normally scattered around.

In ear you can get either sony, audio technica, philips.

Try KLCC sony wings, Best Denki. Shure you can try lowyat plaza outside at ipod station.

If u plan to get shure or etymotic in ear buds, i suggest u to buy online. It's much cheaper than buying in malaysia. The tax rate slammed on those buds are so high that the price might be 20-30% higher.

i guess for IEMs probably do die faster...but i've never seen anything expire faster than sony crapbuds..

Shure has global warranty, and their warranty policy is very good too.. i bought a pair from USA..it was DOA, i had it replaced in Australia..if thats not good warranty coverage (for IEMs/Headphones) i dont know what is.

anyway, Zero, the right question should be, "what's the best I could get under RMXXX"

under or around RM100...non earphone, but clipon, probably koss ksc75. it also comes with lifetime warranty, now is that sweet or what?

but if you're asking whats the best value for money, thats kinda hard to say for audio stuff as there's no way to measure "performance" / price
easiest way is to state your budget roughly so ppl can recommend the best that u can afford

btw, anyone knows if these kinda cables/ICs can be bought easily around here?

I was looking for new earphones to replace my (poor tear rubber cord vmad.gif ) SonyEX51. Finally found this model at All IT Hypermaket for RM149.

Panasonic RP-HJE50 Earbuds with Replacement Ear pads
user posted image

...however I didn't buy it when I see another earphones from 'Logitech Playgear Stealth';-accessories for PSP. The price's was RM139 in All IT Hypermarket but after survey around LY I found Genitech Computer sell it for RM99 thumbup.gif

here how it looks
user posted image

So I give a try with this model & expect 'not much' from Logitech. The ear rubber buds was nice design but alas, I cannot fitted/ tight inside.. sad.gif

But the similar (9mm) driver allow me to mod with Sony EX51 rubber buds, which has better in-ear canal grip. sweat.gif

Although Logitech inexperience with audio-acoustic product, the sound was pretty good. But if u using Sony rubber earbuds the sound was BETTER thumbup.gif . Compare with my EX51, the Bass pump almost like EX series, lower MID/ HI, & acceptable TREBLE. wink.gif

pros; tight Bass, solid design (+ cheap)
cons; lower mid & high

solution; any DAP player has user EQ is enough, lighten the bass & increase the MID/ HI

if u want cheap(i hope it goes below MSRP) and good SQ buds, wait for the altec lansing in-motion IEM, they are actually er4 and er6i that looks ALOT better, and slightly cheaper. the er4 model even comes with in-line volume control and bassboost switch....but it's in white color sweat.gif what a waste

I have this old earphone PHILIPS SBC HE510 which the bass perform better than SHE9500.I read its spec and found out that its db is about 110db ++ while SHE9500's db is 103db.

Is db plays an important factor on bass volume?I bought last time the old earphone for RM40 and still going very well.Besdie that the default volume for the earphone also louder compare to SHE9500.

user of EX71.... what can i say.. GOOD bass... but lack of Treble for sure... Compared with my MDR-E931... it provides well balance of Bass and Treble minus enviroment sound.

Btw what about comparing SHP 805 and SHP 895... how far it goes?

they are not launched yet. As for the model number' I'm not very sure either. I hot linked the pictures from ilounge, you can search about etymotic in ilounge and you'd be able to see the page about them.

the best sony bud is the qualia bud....which looks something like the ex-71....and is now discontinued....if you compare it to other sony buds...I think it's too humble to say that "hope that they are better than sony" biggrin.gif more like "they pwn sony real bad!"

Copy from my other topic...

I'm planning on buying a new headphone for both my mp3 player and my Altec Lansing VS4121 (for private listening and playing games without having to give my brother a headache).

As stated... I will be using this headphone for mp3 player and
at the same time... with my PC's speaker.

---------------------------------------

Someone recommended me a Philips HP200...

First of all... what is the current price of this headphone??? And how about the sound quality for music listening and gaming??

And then... I've read about Philips HP800 and Philips HP890...

Again... what is the current price of both headphones??? And how about the quality for music listening and gaming???

----------------------------------------

My budget mostly around RM100 to RM200... it depends... but most of the time... I think I will be using it mostly for music.... since my time with my mp3 player is longer than with my PC and games smile.gif

So please help me a bit here... blush.gif

----------------------------------------

Whoah... I thought even HP800 would cost around RM270... laugh.gif

Well... if its only RM100 below.... then its in my budget rate... thumbup.gif

----------------------------------------

Any other comment or suggestion??

none of their closed phones are worth the bucks, in fact, only a small number of closed phones are worth looking at and unfortunately I would say none of Sony's make it into the list. The MDR-XD400 may be worth a try though.

I was suppose to get the 895 but unfortunately this "good" rolleyes.gif friend of mine who's suppose to get them back for me didn't get it, I did not have a chance to try it out.

The cd480 is actually my main phone, it's my throw-on phone and I use it extensively, and there are reasons why I do that despite having many other better phones.

1) the 480 has very good sound for it's price Imho. Definitely a more overall well sounding phone that it's close competitor, the grado sr60.
2) It's comfortable, I can use it for very very very very long hours before my head start to hurt.
3) the sound quality actually made my 650 doesn't worth it prior to burning in the 650. I expected the 650 to sound alot more better than it regardless of burn in but it wasn't so.
4) the 480 doesn't benefit much from amplification, at least to my ears, it didn't make much difference.

now the cons:
1) the bass extention is mediocre, it doesn't hit very low, so can be said about the sr60 but the sr60 has better bass impact.
2) the headphone creaks ALOT, it could be very disturbing to song...but Im already used to it.
3) the headphone has very loose clamp, if youe head is small, you're gonna have a hard time getting it to sit still. Don't expect to go DDR with the headphone, 2 jumps and it will fall off the ground.
4) it looks ugly, and is overpriced at this time, and it's not as famous as other phone(if that bothers you). For RM250, you could probbaly get it's bigger brother cd780.....but unfortunately it's not available in Msia.

I'd advice you to go against closed phone at any given time as long as you don't need it's isolation, there is only 1 sony close phone that worth the bucks....the sont R10....second hand would cost around RM12k or more now laugh.gif. the 480 is semi closed, it blocks ambient noise ok. Decision is yours, you can follow the trend and get the 895, or give the 580 a try, now whether the 580 is worth 50-70% more than the 895 or not...I really could not tell.

Uhh...what did u think i was recommending those 2 for then? sweat.gif
The hp-985 does pretty good for both music and gaming
Unless u prefer a little less bass and better clarity, u could go for a Sennheiser HD497 at slightly above RM200
Below that, i think the HP895 is your best bet

lot sof things to do with ambient noise, and sound reflection. almost all good headphones are open design it's just a more ideal design. There are of coz some very good closed phones as well, but they cost a fortune.

Hi there all, am planning to get a Shure E2C. But am curious as to why there are two different packaging for it.

Firstly, there's the purple one.

And there's the red one.

Are they the same? Or is one of them an imitation version.

ah, ic. But, physically, are there any differences in terms of accessories or sound I wonder?

The cheapest I found so far was RM280 dlvd from U.K. Which is a hell lot of difference from the 99usd RRP. That is why I was asking if this IEM had an imitation. sweat.gif

Oh, isn't the G series is targeted for gamers? There's no diff except the casing is black instead of translucent or is there more? But I won't be using it for gaming though. laugh.gif

u can get in mediaplex in mid valley or klcc, or can direct contact the senn distro as stated in 1 of the pinned thread.
i haven tested the mx550, but my friend complaint that the bass of pmx60 isnt as
good as sony MDR-G74SL streetstyle headphone.

px100 might b a better choice among the 3. its priced at rm199 at mediaplex, but direct contact the distro might fetch rm140 include of postage (if i m not wrong). however, its quite loose and cant clamp at my ear, tat's y i don like it.

just my 0.2 baht tongue.gif

I'd take the PX100, using 1 right now and it's pretty good
Dont mind it not being tight since it's so light, less tightness = better comfort for my ears biggrin.gif

Wait a while for Alamak to come and bash the MX500 for being extremely overpriced over here tongue.gif
Google a bit and check out how much they are overseas

sigh.. settled for Sony MDR-XD200..... don't whats the special switch for... it shows.. Music or Movie mode... what does that mean?

Will open type cause the music to release else where? Between CLOSED and OPEN... is it Open type helps better treble? While closed type helps more bass?

Perhaps next round should go for SHP895 then doh.gif....

OH MY GOD!!!!! The xd200 is a total junk! I bought it sometime ago and it requires super heavy equalization to get "ok" sound quality out of it. It just sound so damn freaking muffled! The music mode opens a plastic flat inside the driver housing, makes it semi opened therefore slightly more airy. sorry man, I didn't mean to sound like an @ss or anything, but the xd200 totally don't worth RM90 at all. I'd be happier with a Koss portapro/ksc 75 despite not being a fullsize can.

So actually have you bought it? if you haven;t bought it, DONT buy it...seriously.

MDR-CD are used on all Sony's old series of hi fidelity headphones. They are now broken into two series, mainly the MDR-XD (closed design) and SA(only 3 of them, highest end of sony's series *qualia not included). The CD series are now obsolete, but the sound has not. So fi you look around, you could get them at very good prices for second hand unit. The MDR-V series are mainly for DJs smile.gif

Actually, driver size is another something that is debatable. Anyway, don't worry about it. Most headphones use 40mm driver, some of them use 50mm driver but doesn't neccessarily sound better than those that use 40mm. If you have a chance, try auditioning the Sony MDR-V700DJ (50mm driver, and cost about RM800 I think), then compare it to the Senneheiser 555/580 (40mm driver, RM500-900) biggrin.gif

I didnt hear any difference when amping and not amping the xd200, I belive all equipments will drive them fine.

how many hours did you "burn-in" your XD-200? is 40 hours sufficient or else 50 to 100 hours?

I'm confuse now as there is forum called minidisc.org did a review that XD-200 wasn't that bad after all.

They did mention that XD400 overall does better than CD580....

Thanks...

check out my reply to your previous question on the last page
among those 5 i'd still take the PX100

but i think you might wanna decide whether u want headphones or earphones first
if you're gonna be carrying it in your pocket together with your player, i wouldnt take any of the headphones sweat.gif

if you're wearing spectacles, forget the kcs-55
i broke mine out of frustration cause they were so damn uncomfortable

@kyll

The 895 is bigger in size if compared to the 497. But for me i would take the 895. To me the HD 515 sounds crappy, the 497 is even below it, so i would forget about it. Haven't got a chance to hear the 895, but there is a lot of positive comments about it. Why not give it a shoot?

if it was hp890 vs hd497

hp890 - better comfort, stronger bass
hd497 - less bass, better clarity

i'd go for the HP895 simply for the comfort and better looks + a stand too biggrin.gif

I hv KSC 55 ...

My humble opinion ...

This model emphasize alot on bass ... Without any EQ, the bass is quite overwhelming .. Not to an extent it'll overpower mid/highs, but, it is more noticeable and if you're someone like me who loves to keep the bass tight and more on the background ... Koss is not really a good model without any EQ tweak ... But if you're a bass head ... Then Koss KSC 55 might be a good model ...

About the mid and high, they're pretty nice for me ... Clear highs and mids ... (the highs are pretty okay, not to an extent they pierce your ear ... )

The reason I get the Koss KSC 55 is because of the sporty design ... Since I wear it when I go to the gym sometimes or when I'm walking, I don't like the design of PX100 as the thing cross on top of your head and it's not really that stable ...

No problem. Let us know what u think of the 895. Although i just bought the 555 2 hours ago, my ears are itching to hear the 895... hehe tongue.gif

@buffa

As geminist has posted, pls take note before u post.

@geminist

Hmm.. i disagree with u that the PX100 is unstable. So far im ok with it but just that it'll spoil ur hairstyle. Since both of our hairstyle are similar haha smile.gif

wtf? wah lau eh...RM360+ i oso want lar! wow...what a steal man sweat.gif

I didn't know the ksc55 is also bass heavy, I thought it's a little softer than the portapros//ksc75. Bear in mind it's just my speculation I've never heard of the ksc55 tongue.gif let alone the ksc75 haha

ei jimmy, added liao. no comments on the xd400, never heard of it. Wanted to get it at the first place but the store made an inventory error on their website and when I went there they only had xd200 sweat.gif.

They never carrier the xd400 after that, only the xd300.

I got my portapro at sricomp. I think the price there is cheaper than allIT. But they said that they only give a store warranty of a year or something like that . More than that you wld have to send it to koss on ur own.

primary usage will be watching tv.
but the most important attributes is the weight of the headphone. SHP895 is too heavy for him, not very comfortable. budget wise not a big issue, he is willing to pay RM300, or even more if the price is reasonable.

Try searching the thread where to get it. I dont think u can get it from the bulk sales section. Grado has a strict sales method.

Owned a pair of these last time. It's super duper hard to wear. The damn sponges just won't compress enough to fit in my ear (even with the smallest one). In the end, somehow managed to figure out a way to wear it.

The bass is thumping, otherwise it's a so so earphones. wink.gif

Try avoid buying hp from those gadget shop, they bring it in for the sake of ipod. Not that they ever heard it. One of the guy said that he never listen before. either they buy in high price or they want to cut throat.

Ask some one with card to buy for you lor or some one bulk it.

hola fellas, need all u sifus opinion here..

between Philip SHE9500 & Sony EX71, which one's better? if judging from the price, seems like EX71 wins hands down but i heard bout their terrible durability issues. & so far i heard good things bout SHE9500 but some say EX71 far better sound quality.. so which one guys..

& one more, suggest 1 affordable (around US$100) wireless headphone. emphasis on sound quality..

HP890 is a heavy bass phone and i believe that none of senn phones are near to it. Sennheiser produce more balanced phones. Maybe u can try the HD 555. Quite a hot model among us now. smile.gif

@cucuatoq

First of all both ear buds that u asked about are low end models/consumer models. I believe that earbuds that cost less than RM500 are pretty crappy. It depends on you actually, quality wise i think both are almost on par but built wise, i guess u should know the answer.

Wireless headphones IMO are not worth buying. It's still only in a trial stage and besides that for the amount of money u're paying, u can get a pretty decent headphone. Hope it helps.

* sorry alamak. forgot about which model u told me. Post editted.

yeah_guyz,

I owned the 820(first pic from your post) and measured the length.

Is about 30cm from one end to the other.

This babe can be fold nicely and comes with good bass.

The other model I'm not sure but is definitely cooler than mine in terms of design. tongue.gif

which has more valur for your money?
considering that u can get 2-3 sets of the HP895 for the price of a HD555, i'd say the HP895
but if u can afford it, the 555 should be worth your money
in the end its more of how much it's worth to you, most ppl wouldnt be spending RM500 on headphones no matter how good they sound biggrin.gif

that's what i meant by "its how much its worth to you"
49 out of 50 of the ppl i know wouldnt spend RM500 on any type of headphone

i agree with u so there's no offending there, the 555 would probably be worth the RM500
but he asked to compare with the 895 @ RM180 for a price/performance
and as usual almost all the time the cheaper one wins IMO
but as usual also, sound is a subjective thing, thats why its up to how much its worth to you

nah, its how much good sound will be worth to them
kinda like how i dont ever see myself buying a RM500K car even if i had RM10mil in my bank account, but some would definately go for it even if they had to take a loan

anyway, as i've stated, the 555 would be worth your money if u could afford it, if not then just get the 895

it should sound pretty different than the PX100
i'll let someone else comment since i can only guess tongue.gif

I own both the PX 100 and HD 555. What i can say the sound stage is totally different. The PX100's bass is heavier and the impact is much better than the 555. But i would say that the major difference is the whole soundstage. For 555, it has a wider sound spectrum but the PX 100 sounds muffled when compared to it. It's usual for all headphones when u go up the ladder.

Nope. When i came back for my summer holidays, the 895 was just launched. Didnt had a chance to try it yet. But i believe the 895 is targetted for movie/gaming purpose. Unlike the HD 555 which is the high end group of headphones for sennheisser. That explains the hefty price tag that comes with it. smile.gif

Anyone please help me

Recommend me a headphone that I can find in LYP,budget around RM200
If not where could I find one

I a headphone user but my current headphone makes me having headace after a couple of horurs use bcoz its too small,I need a big headphone since I have a big head

U can try bulk section by Davis and mikechai. They both have the Philips SHP895 model @ RM180-185, decent for your budget.

I'm using one of em pair now, still have few more hours to cook but I think the sound is quite shaped oledi. Playing games with it rocks. Bass is okay. Used to own ordinary Hi-Fi phones but not covering ears and now this one makes me "shake" my head tongue.gif thumbup.gif

Edit - erm I mean shake to the music... <-- Lovin it

No problem. If u have the money, definitely i'll ask u to go for 555. But if otherwise, the 895 would be a good choice too. Maybe i'll get one too when im back in malaysia.

yeah_guyz,

I owned the 820(first pic from your post) and measured the length.

Is about 30cm from one end to the other.

This babe can be fold nicely and comes with good bass.

The other model I'm not sure but is definitely cooler than mine in terms of design. tongue.gif

that's the reason I'm asking.. the price... which is only around RM80 can't be considered high-end...

But a friend of mine... well... he claimed that SHE9500 is a high-end ear-phone. I quarrel with him almost 15 minutes... just to say that SHE9500 isn't... so that's why I asked the question here... laugh.gif

Oh... that guy also a very proud user of SHE9500...

you don't need to waste time "educating" these people, just say it is high-end and let them be happy with it. Personally, I'd just agree or keep quiet about it. I'm not even sure the RM400+ ety er6 can be called entry level high-end IEM, let alone a RM80 canalphone.

he's just not seen what the real stuff are like, pricewise and sound

i guess if u look at it at as a matter of oppinion kinda thing, it depends on the person himself
to someone like me, a RM1500 hp would be pretty much very high end but i'm sure the ppl who own stuff that cost 5 times more wouldn't think it's high end

lots of high-end dynamic headphones out there can be had for around RM2000. anything higher, you'd be paying for the cosmetics, and much would go into premium and goodwill. But then again, the "real" price is not RM2000, since you still need a decent amp to drive them.

IEMs are totally different, the er6 probably sounded like a RM200 headphone, while the UE10pro "probably" sounds like a RM1k+ headphone....but being priced RM4000. They just have a lower price:performance ratio, which is why I wouldn'y say the er6 can be called entry level at all.

and yeah, it's also very much due to the experience in these things smile.gif

hehe no worries. I have wires routed under my table to my amp >.<, wireless headphone is the alst thing you'd wanna go for.

RM300, probbably the Grado SR60. if you could stretch your budget to around RM400-500, get the Sennheiser HD555. That's the phone that I truely believe pwns everything under RM500, at least it pwns all the phones <RM500 that I've ever auditioned. you can read more about it here:

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=215501

the phone also benefits from a headphone amp, but if you dun have the budget for the amp, you can always invest in it later smile.gif

Hey guys,

Friend needs recommendation on a either a neckband/clip on. And I have no idea what's good for these types. Please do not recommend px100, portapro, or the normal headband type. He doesn't really like em.

Budget is RM 200 Tops.

Emphasis on: comfort and performance.

He listens to a really wide variety. So nothing bass heavy or crystal clear is needed. A balanced one would suffice biggrin.gif

So far, he has looked at the ksc 75 and ksc 55. Any comments on those?

Keep the ideas rolling guys! Thanks on his behalf! smile.gif

ksc75 should be okie since is <rm100, some how is not so bassy if no amped and is not crystal clear.smile.gif

To choose design over sound quality is the most difficulty thing to do here for most forumers here.

i had the ksc 55 a while ago
sounds pretty good for it's price
i felt it was kinda bassy though tongue.gif

cant comment on the comfort, but if he wears specs avoid it at all costs

the ksc 75 should be a better buy
search around head-fi.org, it's supposed to sound extremely good for what you're paying
there's a simple mod that can be done too biggrin.gif

Hi everybody...
First time here, just bought SR60, now burn-in time...

Initial impression of SR60, bass a little blurred and muffled and the highs also limited if compared to my previous mdr-q33lp, may be not enuf burn-in time...or is it like that? Overall non fatigue listening but not so comfortable and a little warm for the cups of headphone...and the cable a bit heavy too... blink.gif

Surprisingly, my mdr-q33lp sound very clear on high, love the sparkling sound and also a descent bass...any headphone can be better than mdr-q33lp in term of clearness..?Downside is its soundstage is very small, smaller than Sr60 like inside ur head thing...

Alamaklor, wanna ask u sth, where to buy the HD555 for RM400-RM500, so cheap...? thumbup.gif

Does HD555 need an head-amp to reach its highest potential?

How it compares to no-amp...? And what head-amp u recommend to use wif HD555 and where to buy the amp?

And how HD555 compares to SR60, better how many %?
Does it has wider soundstage...?
Is HD555 the second most best and favourite after your HD650?

Thank you for your patience and help... biggrin.gif

Actually I bought it for more, the RM400-500 pricing are what people get in UK, you might be able to get something like that in Singapore though smile.gif

Yes, it'd need an amp. I've compared it with the "usual" configuration people use when driving a headphone without an amp, that is I connected it directly to my sound card's line out. Without the amp, the sound is muffled, compressed(small sound stage), boomy, and less clarity. Amping it made lots of differences, the sound opens up right away(no kidding) you wont need golden ears to notice that (but depending on amp though). The bass is now alot less boomy, tighter and softer in volume (this is what I called quality bass, but the volume may be a concern to some), highs are crisp but by no means harsh like the grados.

You can DIY one, or check out head-fi's amplifier section and look for something that you like and go from there smile.gif I'm using a Ray Samuels SR-71 now, whcih is already taken and I'm sending it to the buyer in a week or two. I'm using my own amp at the moment, which I find more dynamic than the the sr-71 even without precision parts.

Initial thought of the sr60 was it sounded damn nice, much much better than my px100, but that's it, that's as much as I'd give credit it. It's definitely one of the best phone at its price range, still, I prefer my sony mdr-cd480 more smile.gif

The grados, imho, is a specialty product, they emphasize in certain aspects of the music and therefore ,to me, they can't be used as a throw-on phone since it doesn't do everything well. The 555, and my sony, covers just about everything to an adequate level that I'd call "good". In short, overall, they are better than the grados for general use, and this is why I use them all the time.

the Ms2i has much more sound stage than the sr60, the 555 best the Ms2i in sound stage no time. The grados have the smallest sound stage of all the well known headphone brands smile.gif

Probably tongue.gif I'd say the 555 is an entry level high end phone when properly amped. It also has a better price to performance ratio than the 650, which is why I really love the phone. But im gonna say bye bye to it in a day or two hehe.

Hey guys, can you recommend me a good set of headphones for PC gaming? my budget is RM200-RM300. Requirement :
-cable must atleast be longer than 1.5m because my PC is placed on the floor. -comfortable to wear for long periods of gaming.
-good quality sound of course. Not too much bass. Good balance is important.

Thanks a trillion Alamaklor for your fast reply... thumbup.gif <respect>

In fact, i am really enticed by your views for how best the HD555 is that i am considering to purchase it wub.gif but from your opinion, it seems HD555 definitely need an amp to unleash its best sound...and amp is not cheap at all...more expensive than the headphone itself sweat.gif
Alamaklor, got any best valued amp to recommend? Or DIY is only the best way to make 1?

And DiY is not easy...seems that i hav to wait a while to save more money b4 i buy the HD555 and the espensive amp, well like kenlui and geminist mentioned i'm mayb going towards the darkside too... biggrin.gif
Hmm...gemenist also rich, 1616m expensive, i think usd300+...?!

Alamaklor, let's say if i don intend to buy amp, what is the best headphone to buy with wide soundstage and with budget like RM 500?

BTW, is the now so hot HP895 better than SR60?

Thank you for any idea...

Cheers,

About the HD555 ... Even without the amp, I'm already very satisfied with it ... (I never tried in on an amp so I can't tell for now) ...

I'm currently driving my HD555 with Emu 1616m ... Seriously speaking, the sound is already very good for me ... Hunting for an amp on *someone* currently laugh.gif ... But for now, even without an amp, the sound of the HD555 is already very nice for me smile.gif

*I'm not rich by the way ... Just so happen alamaklor *someone* poisoned me into getting the 1616m ... Now I'm enjoying instant noodle everyday laugh.gif

Anyhow, I'm really content with the sound on my HD555 now ... I guess adding an amp later would surely makes it better as alamak has said smile.gif

Okay, after reading back a few early pages, it seems that Grado sr60 seems to be the popular choice. So can anyone direct me where I can buy this headphone?

Looking at the design of the sr60 it looks...mighty uncomfortable >_< are they?

yup, headphone's actually the cheapest component in the system. just like car's engine smile.gif

a single stage amplifier with some good chips would open up the sound, basically, a cmoy with good opamps in it. Categg is in the process of building his own cmoy, you might wanna tumpang him to build you one, or wait for my kits to be available. They'd be cheap, just a cmoy anyway biggrin.gif

although it opens up the sound, you can still notice that the details are not "coming out", it's like a teaser, you know it's there, u can hear it, and it gives you the feeling that....it's just not coming out. It's the same feeling I get when I just got my 650, the phones sounds horrible during the first 100hours.

You're not falling to the dark side hehe, just realising that there are better things you can spend your money in. One thing to note is that, mid-fi phones seldom benefit from amps, or should I say that the benefits are so marginal that an amp is not really needed. When you move up in class, especially the higher ends one, just about every one of them would require an amp, that makes the total cost much more than what you thought it'd be. if you wanna keep things low, go with mid-fi phones, if you wanna move up, prepare to fork out tons of bucks. if you have about 2-3k to spend for the system, that'd allow you to get some very decent setup, much more decent than what you could get from speaker with that amount of money and I'm sure you'd be happy with it.

I've never heard of the 895 smile.gif so I can't comment on that.

after reading all 20+ pages...
darn you Alamak for not trying out the 895. tongue.gif

Now I need answers if I should get a 895 or the sr60.
So what'll it be?
I'm a little worried that the sr60 might not suit well for gaming, since not many reviewed it gaming-wise. And I doubt the shop would let me try it on a PC XD
also...

<---wearing glasses
would it be uncomfortable?

And no, I will not top up for a HD555. I already starved myself to buy an awesome graphic card last month and i don't plan to do that again. ^^;

Make sure you really try it out before you get any grados. I'm sick with its bowl pads and the vinyl headband. I like the sound though. yawn.gif

Bass is not a problem, since I was never a fan of bass in the first place. As long as there is a 'balance' between treble and bass is good.

So its the 895 I should go for?

Made a mistake, 1616M is close to USD 500...wow shocking.gif
BTW, i thought 1616M can act as head amp...what is its usage actually, mind to tell...?

Yup, today i went to Midvalley Mediaplex to try the HD555...wow its really gd even w/o amp...but HD650 blew all of them away, i am certainly sure add a head amp will send u straight to paradise... drool.gif
BTW, first i notice about HD650 is its bass, like a subwoofer in ur head...superb...but the price of HD650 4 times more than the HD555 sweat.gif
looks like maggi mee very delicious to me after all... thumbup.gif HD555...i will come...
the guy offered me RM540 for 1 but for >5 units, RM500 for one..dono its worth or not or wait to go SG...?

Alamaklor

Yup, no doubt now i fully understand that d*mn the burn-in is so important, just after 20+ hours, the sound so much nicer...high tones clearer and bass nicer...just fantastic...i am sure after 100+ hours of burn-in,it will worth the money i paid... biggrin.gif

Hmm...money is a determining factor here...u pay how much, u get what level of quality...and headphones are still cheaper than speakers hooray... thumbup.gif

Bravo for ur comments in various posts, i really learn a lot of audiophile stuffs from u...hehehe... will try to read more about the cmoy and amp stuffs after this...

Sichiri

Hmm..as i just try out SR60 and HD555..what can i say..
if got money, sure to buy HD555 cos after that u will realize the performance is really worth the money you paid...like Alamklor, kenlui and geminist mentioned a lot in various posts...

for the Grado SR60, its a different story, the appearance is bad and the comfort level is just marginal adequate...but do u know in spite of its look, how many ppl have revered this legendary headphone...including even very experienced audiophiles and reputable magazines...like many ppl said its one of the best in its price range...it's created more than ten years back and ppl still glorify it... blink.gif
for its sound, Grado is quite different from Sennheiser as it is more airy and SR60 definitely lack of bass but its usually enough for non-bassheads to enjoy music...

For gaming and movie, yup i also read the great reviews about hp895 and i believe its really worth the money..only measely RM180, cheaper if compared to SR60-RM280...the only contender here is Sennheiser PX100 also RM180, but seems Alamaklor mentioned not everyone liked it, u might go to try it out and decide...
BTW, u can bring ur laptop to the Music by Design store to try out the SR60 for gaming purpose... smile.gif
Anyway, try out HD555 even u don intend to buy, u will be amazed... biggrin.gif

There's quite alot to 1616m ..

here's the site for you to check it out since I'm not to sure about the whole thing my self sweat.gif

http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?ca...1&product=13552

Yea, by connecting the PCMCIA card to the external micro, the micro dock can act as an output ... There's a CMOY amp on the micro dock smile.gif (There's only some difference in terms of details when using the headphone from the PCMCIA and from the micro dock .. so amp does have a difference) ... smile.gif

Haha ... HD555 for me is really a nice headphone which has good price/quality ratio smile.gif

laugh.gif thumbup.gif haha actually the sr60 is not that bad, the clamp aint that hard but for people who doesnt like surpraaural phone, it'd be PITA.

yeah the sr60 has the least bass of all the grados. Imho, only the phones starting from 225 onwards have sweet bass; sr80's bass is just a teaser. no doubt, if one has the bucks, hd555 is definitely the one to go. I did another comparison with the 650 yesterday; well, the 650 does have better instrument seperation, more solid tones and a little better here and there, but the fact that hd555 is the best phone I've ever heard for RM500+/- still holds true.

I really really wanted to give the 895 a try, I had mike hold a unit for me for about a month and gawd damn my so called "friend" who's suppose to bring it back for me didn't even contact me shakehead.gif.

One caveat though, if you'd tried the Senns without an amp, do not believe in what you heard. Seriously they sound pretty crappy without an amp, and I'm not exaggerating. I think I've said this many times already (i know I did but maybe in msn or...whatever tongue.gif), I ran the 555 from line out of my emu0404, they seriously sound very horrible....just like running them from my extigy...compressed, muffled, less detail, well you know...just add up all the bad things that u could imagine tongue.gif when amped, holy crap, they open up ALOT.

I apologize if people find me repeating things again and again, I can't help it, I cannot really recall the things that I said coz I've been repeating it to many ppl laugh.gif

oh 1 more thing, the 555 is not ultimate, neither is the 650. in fact, im not ultimately satisfied with them, and is still looking for something that'd truely replace them. brows.gif so don't get too excited about it biggrin.gif buy one, try it, when you realised their potential (headphones), you'd start dumping your multimedia speakers/entry level hifi and move to the dark side. RM500+ for a headphone isn't all that expensive really considering the sound quality that you'd get from the headphone and what you could get from a 500 bucks speaker.

oh 1 more thing, the 555 is not ultimate, neither is the 650. in fact, im not ultimately satisfied with them, and is still looking for something that'd truely replace them. brows.gif so don't get too excited about it biggrin.gif buy one, try it, when you realised their potential (headphones), you'd start dumping your multimedia speakers/entry level hifi and move to the dark side. RM500+ for a headphone isn't all that expensive really considering the sound quality that you'd get from the headphone and what you could get from a 500 bucks speaker.

i'll be auditioning it soon, but according to the fellow who owns it, he still prefers his hd600 + cardas + earmax pro and said that the 701 doesnt best the 650 at all. When I think about it, all of the sub 300 phones seem to stay at the same "level" of quality, only differentiated by their specialty/sound signature, so very likely that I wont be getting the k701. but, very likely that I'm getting this for christmas present, maybe new year present hehe....wonder if I should wait for a couple of review first:

Today I went window shopping at City Square for the Grado SR60. Its already 9pm, so the shops are obviously closed.

And I must say, they look like junk! XD

I mean comeon, the packaging, the look of the headphone, it just simply looks like something you just grabbed from a pawn shop! Comparing to modern-day wrapping, the 895 look so much more appealing. If I would buy the sr60 and bring it home my mom would propably ask...

"how much did you pay for those 'new' headphones?"
"Erm...about RM300?"
"WHAT!? You pays Rm300 for that piece of junk!?"

If Grado is so damn good, they should really design a better looking box for something that has a RM299 pricetag.

even the reviews says so :

Grado seemed like headphones from a bygone age, but they sure as heck dont sound like it...

QUOTE
They're made in Brooklyn, and they look as if they stepped out of a '60s music studio, with their black plastic backs and retro styling...

QUOTE
They look like AV lab equipment circa 1981 yet cater to audio snobs...

...I will grab them tomorrow... XD

I tend to agree on Grado junkie look and low quality feel tongue.gif
The comfort level should be same like my ET1000 which I have salvaged the ear cup from HP890 to make it listenable for long hours... Yes I did survived with 4 CD Cai Qin + 1CD Latin Jazz + 1CD Luis Salina + 2CD Cafe Del Mar + Top 10 ancient chinese music. tongue.gif
