How to root:

First method:
If you have adb and you know how to use it!



Second method:
If you have Odin3 and you know how to use it!
Your data and programs will be deleted!!!!

How to flash new firmware:
You’ll need the following to flash the phone:
- ODIN 3 version 1.0 (flash program)
- .PIT file (the boot file of the phone)
- USB cable

1. Make sure you have Odin3 and the firmware ready.
2. Turn off your phone and take out/remove any memory card and sim card.
3. Go to Download Mode by holding/pressing Volume Down+Home Button + Power Button until the screen show up Download Mode with Android logo in working like this

4. Open Odin3 at your pc and plug the micro USB from you pc to your phone.
5. It will detect your USB and show your USB port number with yellow background(COM7) like this(ignore the Message):

6. Make sure you place all the firmware files(PDA,CSC,MODEM) and .pit files into Odin3
PDA = CODE
MODEM = PHONE
CSC = CSC
You can download the .pit files from Samsung-Firmware website too..
7. Click Start and the flash will be in progressing..
8. After finished, your phone will be reboot(take some time) and you have successfully flashed your phone.

I read many of the rooting article but all associate with flashing new firmware. could i just root the SGS in order to get superuser permission without changing the firmware? will all my programs and data stays after rooting?

yes,u can install any .apk files

yes,u can root without changing firmware..
ur data will be there if u root it with recovery method
but if u using Odin method,ur data will be gone

but is safe to backup all ur data before do something else

sorry i'm very new on android, from omnia previously... mean i should do this and all my program should stay as i do the following (from http://forum.samdroid.net/f49/superuser-su...7-2010-a-1355/)

1. Download: update.zip
2. Put update.zip to SD card
3. Enter
Code:
adb reboot recovery

4. In Recovery menu select 'apply sdcard:update.zip' (use vol_down + home)
Phone will reboot
and you have
1. su+Superuser
2. busybox (/system/xbin/busybox)


After doing this, the programs and data in the phone will stay and the only change is it is rooted, correct??

I've been upgrading firmwares and rooting without any problem. Only issue is, the rooting update that I use will delete all apps and data from my phone. Not sure if there is any rooting procedure that will not wipe the phone. I prefer clean installs, anyway, as most of my data is already in the cloud.

P/S - I use the ODIN 'CSC flash' method, not the update.zip method for my rooting process.

Moved from the original I9000DXJF4 to I9000XWJFF, then I9000XWJG1, then I9000XWJG3 and finally now on I9000XWJG5. All rooted with the same LeshaK rooter (from Samdroid forum, I think) file, Superuser_v1_CSC.tar.

i believe this method won't wipe your data or i might be wrong..

but it stated 2nd method using Odin3 will delete your data

Did a reflash to JG5 then applied the lagfix and everything runs super smooth except the occasional hiccup here and there.

Sharing some tips
Regarding connecting phone to pc issue,

I dont know need to install kies software.. at first I was also blur on how to access phone internal drive after plugin the cable.

Since even if the drive was shown on the pc, I wont be able to open because it will show access denied error.

then I recheck the phone. It seems like after choosing as external drive.. there is another option which is to allow pc to access the phone external drive, after confirm it only then you can access/transfer file to the phone

Another problem is got some kind of download unsuccessful error when downloading apps from android market.
The method that I use to solve it was to check on the running application, set filter all and force stop/ clear the download manager thingy and I can download apps again (After 2 days frustrating trying to figure it out)

Just that seems like my battery life wont longer than 12 hours
(charge full last night 3 pm..) plug out.. sleep, wake up at 10 and play a bit here and there with gps/ game/ internet... and now 545pm I`m charging because the battery fully depleted.

added...i guess the FAQ is more than enough but i think lack of Malaysia set questions like APNfound it and at 2nd post,etc...

When shopping online, or checking into a flight online, I'd like to be able to save the receipt screen (or boarding pass screen) to a pdf, so i can easily access it later or print it off. This is easy to do on a laptop with cutepdf or similar.

is there any way to "print to pdf" on an android phone? Or to put it in other words, is there any way to save a webpage as a pdf, so it can be opened again later (and look exactly the same)?

just wanna know, is it okay to charge the i9000's battery while it still has some of its juice on?

mine's running on 28% now and still thnkng whether i shud start chargng or just wait for it to drain off completely

modern battery these days have no memory effect.
but if your battery still new, it is recommend to recharge a few cycle, to meet it optimum performance.

hi u guys experience some weird wifi issues? I cant online wif wifi suddenly and after restart fon or the fon wifi connectio againn it is ok again but the prob will come back

i download a App call Quick Setting. to set vibrate and ringing.

Check if
Setting -> location and security -> wifi for location is untick
If it is ticked, untick it and see if it solves

i understand wat he ask for as i was looking for the same thing...

sometime after dialing a number i won put fon on hear to hear the caller ringtone of someone...usually after they pick up..my fon vibrate for a short period to acknowledge me that someone pick up the fon already and i can start talking ... usefull when driving without a handfree...

that 1 for incoming calls ringtones right?

what i meant was.. when u suddenly get drop calls u will dont realised it disconnected until u see it on the screen or cant hear the other side talking. i have 1 of this app when im using blackbery before. on nokia phone you would hear a tone when call get disconnected.

That's a good one, have you checked if the guys on desire and milestone have raised this also? The beauty with android is that it really doesn't matter which phone maker as most apps can be ported across handsets.

I don't have the problem initially. I was curious after i saw few posting about it so i experimented by ticking it and as u said the wifi does have problems staying connected. Why is that? Seems like it shouldn't affect anything.

Actually it's because some apps automatically try to engage wifi to determine your location.
Once it does that, if you are not in a wifi spot, the thing just hangs up and can't disconnect because the app is forcing the connection.

For some reason, even when you move into a wifi hotspot, it still remains stuck.

I guess this is as simple as I can explain it based on my experience.
Once I turned off the location setting from wifi, then this stops.

One app that seems to attempt to run itself, and may cause this is MSN talk.

Getting annoyed with it, as even when I connect to wifi the app automatically turns on.

There are a few chinese inputs, one is built in, change input to the built in IME or download google IME. Either works.

If i recall, his problem is only if he makes the call, if receiving he won't face this problem.

How is the Samset custom ROM? Is it faster than the stock JG5? I tried flashing Samset on my rooted JG5 and upon starting, got lots of Force Close messages, and had to flash JG5 again.

Just wondering if its worthwhile trying to flash Samset again. I might try on a freshly flashed JG5 with no root to see if it eliminates the Force close errors.

Just to confirm. SGS is supposed to be able to play all kind of videos except RMVB right? I can't seem to play .mkv. I'm using the default player. Any particular reason? Btw i'm using the default player.

Default player cant play RMVB nor MKV..

Dload the RockPlayer.. you should be able to play those files u wanted to play.. Cheers!

LOL.. now only i know can play MKV file in default player..

but however.. i still prefer the rockplayer.. much smoother and more functions..

actually kinda weird also.. i tried to play the same file.. for example.. i tried the day after tomolow.. x264, 720p plays perfectly smooth.. but when it comes to transformer.. sometimes cant play.. sometimes play then lag/hang..

Yeap. Having the same problem too. I tried 2 .mkv files. 1 can't play the sound. Another can. But i can't drag and choose where to start from in both files. Can you drag the files splua333? That's for 720p. Rockplayer was worse for both files. It lagged horribly. At least the default player is smooth.

I even tried 1080p .mkv files. Can't play any of them. The pop up mentioned unsupported file format or something like that

Hope to find a solution. Tried googling but no mention about it anywhere. Was wondering whether it has anything to do with the different audio format, bit rate etc etc.

To tell you the truth JG5 is quite fast enough, and i never tried it bare to be honest. The maker of the rom did a few small changes optimize wise that i don't think you can value any real world differences. The only thing i like about it, is the theme and the continuity of the theme. And the font, i like the font a lot, it seems smooth and allows me better readebility.

Not sure why you getting force close, are you sure you installed JG5? Install it then check your firmware by *#1234#

Then reboot once if all is well, reboot to recovery then apply update zip. Then reboot again.
Login with your gmail and sync your contacts and all then reboot again.
Then apply your sms backup and call log and reboot again.
Lastly apply all your program backup.

Remember now that titanium backup has a update.zip generator allowing you to batch install in the free version too.

Reboot and enjoy.

1) Anyone with JG5 can know why some (paid) apps don't show up in Market? For example "cachemate", my market only shows me the free version, but in fact I've already paid for it with HTC Magic and now it doesn't show up in JG5 Market

2) Might be a n00b question: just how can I type " " (space) when searching through contact name with the DIALER? (not in the contacts). This is a deal breaker if no spaces allowed in dialer search...

720p yes, 1080p no. i tried both. when try to opening 1080p it just pop up error saying that video is not supported. also, i think it's very hard to get a 1080p movie under 4GB (unless the movie is very very short) which is the max limit (FAT32 limitation) u can transfer at any one time to your internal sd. I'm just lucky happen to have a movie at 3.9gb. lol.

Hmm, confirmed I am on JG5 (PDA XWJG5, Phone XXJG1, CSC XXJG4).

I have also posted the question on xda. Lets see what they have to say.

Maybe I will try again when Samset 1.2 is released with the kernel patch or try the lagging fix. Just have to go get a micro sd card.

The Samset custom ROM does look good though.

I'm very new to android world (coming from WM6.5, HTC HD) and have learned a lot from this forum (treat V1 & V2). I would like thanks ppl like hihihehe, alfredtwl etc for providing so many info on SGS.

I plan to buy SGS this week and would like to ask few question;

1) When android 2.2 (Froyo) is out, if Samsung does not official upgrade SGS to android 2.2, can we just download and install Froyo ourself (maybe Touchwiz3.0 may be over written, correct me if I'm wrong)?

2) understand that before we can install custom ROM to android, we need to root the os, for Modoca R2, is it we no need to root the OS as the rooting is built into the custom ROM?

3) If i use ADB to root, I understand all the step except step 3 'Enter Code adb reboot recovery', where do I type in the 'adb reboot recovery'?

Fancy widget is taken off market, because is copy right by HTC, if you want it, google it =D

If you want to use ADB, first you have to setup the environment, go download the SDK. then run window's CMD, type there.

So happen to have those 1080p demo videos from Sony and Samsung which come in under 4GB because they are split into multiple files and they work just fine. These were converted into MP4 format from MKV. But yeah generally due to the file size restriction of FAT32 we be watching mostly 720p vids anyways although there are a fair bit of 720p that reach 7GB and above due to extra audio etc etc within the file.

yesterday was around the curve, so had tested around the SGS and overall is smooth and i had chk the version is JF5. any one here have upgrade to JF7? any improvement for JF7 compare to JF5?

For those bought their SGS from ikano roadshow, how long is your warranty period?

The roadshow guy told me now only 12mths warranty, no more 12+6 months…. Is that true? Do i still need to registered online, as they have taken my warranty card and promise to send for me.

I'm very happy with the purchase and relieved at the same time now that my phone has a proper case.

Good points:
+ The quality is simply very good.
+ Everything fits perfectly and no loose ends. The phone is firmly held at its place.
+ Feels solid in my hands.
+ Does not add any considerable weight although everything now is slightly thicker. But I wouldn't mind for the extra protection it provides.
+ Material is top-grade. Even has the leather smell.
+ Does not intrude in anyway when unfold. You may just leave the front cover hanging or fold it all the way back.
+ Classy looks.
+ Front screen is protected by the cover which has soft material inside. An extra plus for me over the silicon case with the screen exposed.

Minor complaints:
- The seller I purchased from does not include screen protector and lanyard. I've read that some people got these when purchased from other sellers.
- There's some areas which are still exposed but not much. You can see the exposed areas through the pics from the link above.

Overall a good buy even though a tad expensive compared with other casing slowly coming out in the market but you get a quality case. If the seller had included the SP and the lanyard, then it would be quite a deal.

Hope this little feedback will help someone in making their decisions.
