I read many of the rooting article but all associate with flashing new firmware. could i just root the SGS in order to get superuser permission without changing the firmware? will all my programs and data stays after rooting?
*
I've been upgrading firmwares and rooting without any problem. Only issue is, the rooting update that I use will delete all apps and data from my phone. Not sure if there is any rooting procedure that will not wipe the phone. I prefer clean installs, anyway, as most of my data is already in the cloud.

P/S - I use the ODIN 'CSC flash' method, not the update.zip method for my rooting process.

Moved from the original I9000DXJF4 to I9000XWJFF, then I9000XWJG1, then I9000XWJG3 and finally now on I9000XWJG5. All rooted with the same LeshaK rooter (from Samdroid forum, I think) file, Superuser_v1_CSC.tar.

I bought my 16gb unit from a maxis centre for 2599. Am on digi smart plan package. The default video player plays any mkv up to 720p with ac3 audio (not dts).

With Rockplayer, i can even play RMVB videos smoothly. I've rooted my phone and its running jg5 firmware now, much better than the original Rom.

Man, this phone is so beautiful to use naked (minus case or screen protector). However, besides being a fingerprint magnet, the backside plastic scratches easily!

I've only had my phone either in my hand or in my pants pocket but already there are hairline scratches all over the backside - trying not to worry too much about it as long as the screen and the shiny sides don't get scratches. Backside can always be replaced, after all it's all 1 piece..

Hmm, not sure if the display is scratchproof glass, but it doesn't seem to scratch easily. Must think long and hard whether I want to put on an SP..

Anyone in the same boat as me, enjoying things without any protection, ahem?

I can tell you for sure the display is NOT scratchproof glass.. I played with a demo set before the SGS launched in Malaysia.. the display super scratchy.. so better not take the risk..

Thanks for the advice, bro. OK la, must place order for SP already then. MFOP here I come. smile.gif

Or you can use it as a mobile hotspot..like a Wifi router. Tried it and it worked flawlessly. However, sucks your battery big time.
*
Yep, the mobile hotspot method also works. The good thing about this method is that you don't need to have Samsung Kies software installed to ensure the modem drivers for the phone are available on your computer. However, as mentioned, it's a major batt sucker!

hmm,not sure then because i nvr use that method b4 but i think should b working..i only tried using odin3 but all data will be wiped

update.zip must be in the root folder of the internal memory (/sdcard) and not on the external memory (/sdcard/sd = microSD card). I just successfully flashed up to Samset 1.2 ROM (themed, optimized, rooted JG5) without losing my apps and data with this method.

Did anyone record 720p movie clip with SGS?

i did, but all my output file was in 3gp format.
720p under 3gp format? It this HD movie format?

Can we predetermine the output file format other than 3gp? For example, mkv, Avi….
*
3GP is just the container. I think the video still HD (720p).

Guys and gals, the latest European firmware (probably not Samsung official, plus no Asian input support) I9000XWJM1 has a superb Task Manager.

Dude.. that looks super awesome. Definitely gonna be flashing to this firmware over the weekend. Any other improvements over the stock JF4? I've read many postings claiming performance gains, power efficiency, etc.. but it all seems rather anecdotal to me.

Specifically, from your experience:
1. Are the annoying blank screens gone? You know sometimes it just lags horribly especially when switching between apps, or do you still apply the lagfix after a fw flash?
2. Battery improvements.. any?
3. GPS.. faster lock times? JF4 takes ages to lock and frequently loses connection (even after the recommended fix over at xda)
4. Anything else?

Sorry for the questions, I'm just rather excited about this phone and it's potential. smile.gif

I'm actually about to flash up to the Samset 1.5 custom ROM from JM1 (which I've rooted, btw, to make screenshots and other activities possible). Why, you ask? Well, my previous experience with JG5 and Samset 1.2c (customised over JG5) showed that the custom ROM was quicker overall.

OK, on to your questions tongue.gif

1. Not gone, but I get them less often than when I was on the stock firmware JF4. The lag was nearly gone when I executed lagfix script after upgrading to SamSet custom ROM.
2. Slight improvement (the phone lasts until around 11pm instead of dying around 8pm).
3. Haven't used GPS yet so I can't say if anything's been improved in this area.
4. Newer firmwares are generally less buggy, less laggy, less power hungry..

Yep, you need to be rooted first. I use an app called drocap2 to capture screenshots off the phone (to JPG or PNG files).

To tell you the truth i don't use Kies at all, i don't understand why people want to use Kies?
*
Me too. I've only installed Kies because I needed the modem drivers so that I can tether my SGS as a modem to my laptop. Other than that, I just mount my memory as drives for file transfer and I use ODIN to flash to newer firmwares.

For contacts and calendar sync - I do it via the cloud with my gmail account.

Yahoo!!

Applied mimocan's kernel-based lagfix on my phone (XWJM2, rooted with leshak's update.zip file) finally, after going through more than 50 pages (500+ posts) on the xda-developer forum.

My Quadrant benchmark score has moved up from 811 to 1735!!

I am having trouble mounting the external drive onto /disk. Is it because I am partitioning and formatting through the phone? I used gparted. Went through the xda thread and still no luck.

How did partitioned and format your external sd? and was it mounted immediately after reboot from flashing the kernel?
*

OK, I actually removed my 8GB micro-SD card and plugged it into a USB card reader and partitioned and formatted from gparted (I booted my laptop into gparted using a live CD). Made first primary partition FAT32, and 2nd primary partition EXT4.

Installed the micro-SD into the phone then only used ODIN to apply the kernel fix.

Yes, upon reboot of the phone, the EXT4 partition was automatically mounted by the OS as '/disk'.

Awesome! My initial score was 878 and after the fix I'm hitting about 1400+. I presume you're using ext4?
*
Yep, I am using ext4 as I'm already familiar with this filesystem format, with 2 computers at home running Ubuntu 10.04. smile.gif
