I read many of the rooting article but all associate with flashing new firmware. could i just root the SGS in order to get superuser permission without changing the firmware? will all my programs and data stays after rooting?

sorry i'm very new on android, from omnia previously... mean i should do this and all my program should stay as i do the following (from http://forum.samdroid.net/f49/superuser-su...7-2010-a-1355/)

1. Download: update.zip
2. Put update.zip to SD card
3. Enter
Code:
adb reboot recovery

4. In Recovery menu select 'apply sdcard:update.zip' (use vol_down + home)
Phone will reboot
and you have
1. su+Superuser
2. busybox (/system/xbin/busybox)

After doing this, the programs and data in the phone will stay and the only change is it is rooted, correct??

Thanks alot for your help.

1st... isn't this for testing only as the menu said
2nd... it says spirent-lcs... not sprint (US carrier provider)

anyone has MediaByPath or similar software so that i could create mp3 playlist on the phone itself... e.g. play a particular folder only as i dont want every music files on phone being played. i know the .nomedia way, but that doesn't help me a lot.

Just to share something with you guys about the Battery issue..

I have finally tested how far can this device go...

It has been unplugged for 21 hours from now... my batts is still left 51%.

With 50+ calls.. and around 30-40 sms and auto sync gmail on...

So with this small experiment.. i think that this device batts is kinda lasting...

If compare the iphone i used last time.. it should be flat/dead if i have unplugged 21 hours.. smile.gif

Cheers Guys and Gals!

no problem with my battery..i can easily last for 2 days

and i think u guys better configure properly ur settings rather than blame the battery...
*
turning on or off APN doesn't really made a huge different, just like one has 30% vs. 10% left end of day. display is set to minimum brightness, not more than 30min calls and a few SMS. on stock rooted firmware...

any helps?

For your information.....
If you are just surf net using 2G network only, 500MB is enough.....
But please keep in mind, do not switch 3G network.
cause once u change it to 3G , it will running fast..... 10MB in 5 mins........
u just calculate yourself.........

500MB is enough for everything in 2G network such as browsing internet, twitter, facebook, ebuddy, msn and etc.....

But if you plan to tethering with the SGS to your PC?
u need higher probably 3G (just RM78) ...........
the different for 1.5GB (RM68) and 3GB (RM78) is just RM10........
so just think for 500MB or 3GB......

best of luck....
do not become silly guy let Maxis charge u like hell
*
this argument is not correct. 3G or 2G, the amount of data u used will be exactly the same, just the matter of speed.
like if u load a video from youtube, 3G allows u to load faster than 2G and of coz the amount of data u use will be exactly the same count on MB wise.

quick update after flashing to JG4 from Kies, the batt seem much better life, compared to JF4.

for those having batt issue, just turn off APN, turn on only necessary

Added on August 10, 2010, 10:49 pmbtw, i sent a nasty email to samsung support regarding the suck kies issue, and they called me the next day.
he claimed no such case happen and will feedback to software team. i hope everyone do the same to give them pressure and get out of denial mode.

i did that in samsung website direct
