if you control the ambient lighting, then a matt white 16:9 screen would be ideal. Else, opt for high contrast grey screen.

Yes, HD70 is the older sibling of HD65. It is more expensive. However, it is no longer in production.

You're d man.

I always find it rude for ppl to bring in company's name into forum discussion. Especially when they start to say that this shop has got attitude problem, that shop has got bad customer service. Its always a one sided discussion especially when they shop's representative is not present in the discussion. This can seriously tarnish the shop's reputation.

Cannot be. Sure have diff. You try THX calibration disc. In the sharpness setting section, can see the difference. Btw, I am using Pioneer DV-400S.

In this case, I dont think the source is the problem

Thank you htkaki. I bought HD65 last February but only setup in early March. I enjoy watching movies but
i do not watch astro even i have 2 astro in my house. Reason is, i like to watch my own choice of movie at my ample time.
And because of that, i need something that can satisfy me a lot. One movie and that's it for the day.

HD65 truly awesome for me, more than enough i get from my budget.

I am not pro with HT, my setup is in my bedroom, basically just for my own eyes and ears sake justification. My husband is not a HT enthusiast
so everything is up to me, including i am the one who pasang the shelf cry.gif

I think it may be due to the camera. It was quite good compared to mine. My previous shot :

I used the wrong ISO setting. Hence, a lot of 'noise' in the photo. I will take some shots of my HD65 setting as well as screenshots of 300 and Black Hawk Down BD.

Later, I will try to take some shots.

A lot of people have the misconception that projector is blurry and needs total darkened room, which is wrong as most of HD pj in the market today are bright and beam up excellent picture. rx330, your wife rejected the idea of a HD pj at first. Now, she is enjoying it. Seeing is believing tongue.gif

Here's the setting of my HD65 for afternoon viewing due to ambient light in my room

And afternoon (1.30pm) viewing with ambient light. Source is DiVX file in pendrive via DV-400S. This will dispel off any myth about a need for total darkened room.

bro, i like to visit your place..
like to test your sound system.

the sunlight on top is a turn off. can u block it with something. i think i have a solution for u.

by the way, i have this trouble calibrating for the right colour and contrast. Due to the DVD and PS3 im using. i kept going forward and backward adjusting the colour , brightness and contrast.

My question is whether i should use the DVD remote control to calibrate or use the projector remote control? or both? if use projector remote to calibrate the, colour and contrast , the dvd picture quality may have to calibrate again. Is there a Saving for different customization in the PRojector>

Bro, cant seal it off due to HM issue sweat.gif Have to live with it.

I use the DVDP and PS3 to adjust now as there is only 1 user setting in HD65. Then again, the default setting of HD65 is quite good. Only thing is you need to adjust the brightness according to your ambient light.

Just back from dinner. Not going to take screenshots tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

*
Thanks bro. The default setting is quite good. Wat is the THX calibration u mentioned about earlier?
By the way, the Superwide function is not meant for 16:9 screen right. so its no point to use it , right?

superwide not meant for 16:9. It is for 2.35:1

Any DVD with THX has this calibration in it. Both audio and visual.

Thanks, will do so sometime later. Now need to finish off some work projects before can pursue this. In the meantime, am thinking what to do with my Dell PJ.

bro, i like to visit your place..
like to test your sound system.

the sunlight on top is a turn off. can u block it with something. i think i have a solution for u.

by the way, i have this trouble calibrating for the right colour and contrast.

*
Normally just adjust on your projector. Most projector should have a profile, so you can save profile 1 for PS3 Blu-ray, profile 2 for PS3 DVD etc... I use 2 profile for my PC, one is for range 16-235 and another for 0-255.

is there an accurate setting for camera aperture and speed that im suppose to shoot for a darker room. its pointless to take photo that cannot create the actual scene colour .

i thought i read somewhere in AVS b4, need to find first.

i think different ambient light have different camera setting.

Set your camera to AV mode.
Set to :ISO 100
Apperture : F 2.8 to 3.5
Use tripod.

Using LX2 to tk this? Very nice shot. Btw, to make more informative for other users, can state the setting of the cam, the room environment (darkened, ambient light, etc) and your HD65 setting

to get a reasonable screenshot, I'd suggest following:
1. use tripod
2. set on AP or manual exposure and use at least F8-F16, preferably smallest aperture
3. then underexpose little bit by 1/3 or 1/2 stop to get darker blacks cos auto metering will overexpose slightly due to inclusion of black border
4. use ISO 400-800 so that exposure time is bearable, maybe 1 sec.
5. use self-timer to trigger shot
6. do several shots with slight exposure changes.

hope u all can understand Super-Wide better. copy & paste info :

"5. Super Wide is default at Off. To activate it, select Auto, then set the Zoom feature to 1. HD65 will then automatically detects the content, if 16x9, it masks off top and bottom 5% to show the "action safe" area with a near 2.0:1 ratio. If 2.35 content, it takes the 2.0:1 portion of the 2.35 and fill the 1280x640 area, so we get 100-lines more of vertical resolution than a plain 2.35:1 image (1280x544). So now we have "constant height" and "constant width" for both 16x9 and 2.35:1 movies. So the average consumer will no longer be confused as to why some movies fill the screen, and some movie has black bars at top/bottom.

6. The 2.0:1 provides a good wide viewing vista for more Cinemascope feeling without expensive 16x9 lens. With <$999, consumer gets a "budget minded CHT".

Super Wide works well, especially, with 1080i source, where 100-lines more resolution is used to interpret the 1080i/p contents.

It's best to use a 2.0:1 screen to mask out the unused pixels to enjoy the 2.0:1 Cinemascope feeling.

If user don't like it, they can always disable that, and HD65 performs like any 720p 16x9 projector does."

too bad, should have known this before buying the screen for superwide. mine is only 16:9

by the way, someone did mentioned that HD65 can save different profiles for the different sources. where the hell is this found in the Menu , i can't find it.

Do u guys see any different in Image AI.

I dont think the accuracy of the photo can be similar to the projection video colour. A lot depend on which camera also. try using Lomo camera , hehe... hybrid colour some more. Good camera and perfect setting make good production than a few hundred dollars compact camera. i guess not waste time comparing it .

last time people were saying fuji is greener than kodak. I guess there must be a discussion on different camera brand as well .

What we can do is make arrangement with ourselves and have a tour to compare the exact projection colour.

Image AI is the 'booster' for contrast. However, it has to sacrifice the bulb's life since it wont be running in eco mode.

As far as I am concerned, new HD65 should have warranty if it is bought in Malaysia. Since HD65 is less than a year model and taking into consideration of the usage of the bulb, I dont think there is any issue with warranty claim if mys_terious send it back to the shop that he bought from. smile.gif

u can try The Host.
HD65 supports either 720p or 1080I , our projector is not FullHD 1080p but Full HD 1080I - Interlaced.

So thats why i set to 720p much more smoother. If u set to 1080p, more grains will be noticeable .

Are you sure Optoma does the downscaling job?
I noticed the HDMI still read the same 1080p on the blue display. I think it failed to downscale. It would have been either 1080i to be accurate.

That's the reason i go for 720p for the Native Precision.

Just watched Celine Dion, it was awesome. Planning to get Mariah Carey.

*
yes... cos it is native 720 ...how to squenze more pixel out??

they use so called software rendering to down/squenze more pixel into less pixel display

for 1080i is diff stori lo.... it feed 540 at 1 time !

that's wat i mentioned before. Different camera has different reproduction. We cannot judge the quality of the pic with cameras. It looks like recording for pirated movies..haha.!!

It does have a setting for photo in the menu but I am not sure whether it is giving out true colour of photo as I am totally hopeless in photography. Maybe other HD65 users can give their opinions / views on this.

Anyway, here's the features :

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but have a look at post #953 for the screen shot of the HD65 OSD menu.

As far as I am concerned, new HD65 should have warranty if it is bought in Malaysia. Since HD65 is less than a year model and taking into consideration of the usage of the bulb, I dont think there is any issue with warranty claim if mys_terious send it back to the shop that he bought from.  smile.gif

Definitely YES  thumbup.gif
*
thats why better buy AE2000 from HTleg.. got free bulb.. biggrin.gif

I think normally if bulb blow, not covered under waranty right? even if it's few months old and 200-300hrs only..

I think most probably will trip since single phase can support only 3hp only and you are using 4hp. correct if I am wrong.

single phase max usually=60A so approx 4-5hp simultaneously on.

i have about 5hp on simultaneously on single phase is ok, which leaves some spare for the water heaters, lights, etc.

As for my pad, the combined hp is 5.5. But, never on above 2 units since only 3 of us in the pad. So, single phase aint a problem to me (for now)

I am sure fellow users here will be grateful to help out. Btw, what is your screen size? Using fixed screen?

When I go over, maybe we can give Mega a call whether he want to join us and bring some BDs to test.

If that's the case, I wld rather buy Dvico to enjoy HBR. No need to upgrade in near future. Popcorn might be way cheaper but HBR is the way to go.

Rainbow effects will be more pronounced if the brightness setting gets higher. What's your setting?

Then again, certain indiividual with less sensitive eyes are not so prone to rainbow effects. Maybe have to ask jediknight8820 since he is also an ex-SP4805 user.

Most probably the problem lies in the DVDP itself. I am using DV-400s (obsolete) for my DVD source. It upscales consistently at 720p and its PQ is very good at this price. Hackwire also using DV-400S. No problem.

hmmm...really need to upgrade my dvd player then...

but i'm actually happy with the pic quality of some films with it...and it's all depend on the source lah...if dvd title has poor transfer...upscale also wont improve much i think

btw -silly q... the pj itself...can it upscale?

HDScape Sampler. The price has increased to 4.95. But the HD-DVD/DVD combo version is still 3.95. Good to demo to friends and relatives to jump to HD.

good information about the PJ setting here biggrin.gif

some say longer HDMI cable will affect the PQ...... i think should be better if using good quality 1.5m v1.3 HDMI cable, place the dvd player/amplifier not too far from ur pj. I myself place the pj above the dvd player and a longer 7m coxial cable from dvd player to amplifier as my old Denon dun support HDMI input.

For me,to take the screen shoot, placing the camera on a tripod is a must.Use timer mode if u dun hv a remote to trigger it.ISO set to smaller better, less noise, mine is 100.Set the camera to "manual" or "AV" mode.Aperture F5.6-8 should be fine.Pause the movie (this is critical cos if not,the slow speed will get blur pic if there's movement on screen).Adjust the EV to 1/3 or 2/3 lower to avoid over exposed.Snap a pic and preview it to see if it's over exposed, prefer to view from camera's histogram.

Above setting is just for reference, below pic is what i get last night, actually just to post some pics of the pj with RPTV on the side in another thread, could be better if do more test. On the right is amplifier,pj place behind and about 3 ft above the sofa.DVD title is "Meet The Robinson",durian D9 copy @720p.

I heard HDMI shouldn't more than 5 meters. You'll need some kind of extension device to have longer. Not sure, I could be wrong. hmm.gif

Dear forumner,

Need help, I have been trying to find a local distributor and seller etc for optoma HD65 for a while now until I found this link while googling. I did find HD70 at one hifi store ( can't remember the name of the store) at Mid Valley last month, but no HD65. I prefer the 65 because of it small form factor. Can anyone assists me in pointing me to the right direction to where i can buy this projector for my home use like watching movies, astro etc? I notice HTKaki is selling the 65 but seems he run out of stocks, so any other alternative? Any respond is really appreciated.

Have a nice day all.

I m really very interested into getting this PJ but i have a few questions.

I wanna put the PJ in the living room. my living room can fit a 110" diagonal screen coz my sofa is around 10" so it should be ok. I m also getting a 8' tv cabinet so the screen at 8' will actually be around the same length as the tv cabinet.

The question now is where to put the PJ. I m sitting roughly around 12' from the screen, so projecting from 13' is not a problem. Should i hang it on the ceiling or put in on a table/cabinet behind the sofa? Will it be too noisy? Sofa is not fixed at 12' so can be adjusted.

Behind my sofa is foyer area where the main door is. So i m around 8' from the wall behind me. Im thinking if putting on a table/cabinet is workable, i'll buy or custom make a cabinet / table and put it right behind my sofa. Or is it better to just hang it on the ceiling? I have plaster ceiling already, will it be very troublesome? total height from floor to plaster ceiling is 8 1/2'.

How much would it cost to get a 110" screen? It's a living room so i will have lights coming through the sliding door and also there's a small window right beside the screen area. My current curtain is not thick enough to block off all the lights.

I m under quite a tight budget so it's best to get a screen which is cheap but produces acceptable quality. hehe biggrin.gif

If you opt for Draper 106" manual pull down screen (abt RM900), then the case is abt 99". Overall size is 64: X 96". At this screen size, the pj needed to be at abt 12' 6" from the screen. So, it would be right behind your seating area. If you want to DIY, then it will be cheaper. Drop rx330 a PM on this.

http://www.projectorcentral.com/Optoma-HD6...culator-pro.htm

Better to adjust your seating distance. It would be rather troublesome to install a bracket through the plaster ceiling, considering you need to patch it back.

The fan noise of HD65 is not noisy. I think other HD65 owners will agree on this. Your viewing area scenario is almost same as rx330 with lights through the small window.

I spoke to rx330 b4. Will consult him more if i really get this PJ. I also thought putting the PJ behind my sofa is a good idea just that duno how to put it. It will need to be on top of my head and it's hard to find such high tables. So my other alternative will be cabinets. As long as i can find a way to put it on top of my head behind the sofa then it'll be ok.

What is the standard perfect 16:9 screen that's nearest to 110"?

Thanks for the reply

Thanks again for the reply. 106" seems to be ok for me. Only 4 inches off 110" hehe.

Once my finance minister gives a go then I m sold. But i think it's quite hard lah. Sigh.

After PJ i need to get PS3, Amp + 5 Satellite + 1 Sub. It's gonna cost me a bomb lah.

Next time if i m gonna change to a 1080p PJ i don need to change anything right? Just replace the PJ can already right?

Thanks.

I know it's cheap but i was thinking of going for a bit higher specs keke. Coz this system doesn't support DTS:MA and DD:THD. I was thinking since I m going HD, might as well go all the way. Thinking of getting a cheap Onkyo/Yamaha receiver with cheap satellite and sub. Since satellite and Sub can be upgraded in the future biggrin.gif What you all think?

Draper screen alone costs rm900. May i know what gain is that screen? White/Gray? rx330, might need ur help DIYing one keke.

Even the cheapest entry level also need around RM8k already. Sure my GF won't agree to let me buy.

ya, only LPCM
therefore the sony htib also does only LPCM, they are perfect for each other for a budget entry setup

Eh really ar??

Thanks for the info bro rx330. I dunno the sony htib can do that also. If that's the case then I might really buy it first. LPCM can do both DTS:MA and DDTHD? In their native bitrate? Wow, i m getting excited hehe. I m just gonna use PS3 for blu-ray and gaming. Will connect HTPC to the PJ as well. biggrin.gif

shud be real tongue.gif

not LPCM can do both, its tat ur ps3 will decode both of tat and send it as PCM

and it has 3 hdmi ins, 2 opts, and 1 coax, so if u wanna tambah other players, shudnt be a problem, its has on board decoding of dts as well as DD

Haha sorry, i spoke too fast coz too excited about the PCM thingy. So as long as the signal is sent as PCM and the htib can process it then i will get the full HD Sound experience? haha sounds like an ad. Really lossless ma? biggrin.gif

Damn nice. Where u see that unit bro? Any electrical shop can order?

Hehe ok ok, will go to sony and try it out. RRP is RM1999 normally outside can get cheaper price ger. Like the new S32A400 LCD RRP IIRC is RM2988, one electrical shop i ask in Kepong say can sell for RM2088. I dunno he got bluff me or not. Maybe can try my luck. If I can get the htib for RM1499 or below then I m sold biggrin.gif

Aiyah sibek paiseh lah, this thread about HD65 but i keep on talking about other things. Thanks bro rx330 and bro htkaki for ur precious suggestions.

Let's get back to HD65.

Haha, 106" Screen, HD-Gaming, HD-Audio, HD-Video all for less than RM8k, shit, before this i was looking at the Sony W 40" LCD which costs RM6.5k or RM7.5k. This is too good to be true lah. Some more bulb replacement is only RM580 for 2000-3000hrs. Sigh if finance minister agrees than I'll straight straight buy lah haha.

Yeah i know, i follow the blu-ray thread in playstation thread. You guys are the 'hardcore' collectors hehe.

I'll build the library slowly lah.

But 8k is really a good start for beginners. I mean 32" LCD also costs 2k already, what's 3.7k right? only around 2k more and u can get 106". What's there to think right? hehe.

hi guys,

hd 65 being a 720p native projector..wondering whether it will bring out the best in blu ray disc movie watching

let's say comparing it to a full HD plasma TV?

Of course, the Full HD plasma would have the best PQ. But, in terms of WOW factor, nothing beats HD projector.

Seriously (not trying to hard sell HD pj) plasma tv emits too much light which my eyes will eventually gets tired. Moreover, it is more expensive. A Full HD projector is abt RM11-12K, which could shoot a 106" image easily. To get the same size for a plasma, be ready to fork out 6 figures $$$.

Then again, you need to have suitable environment to have a pj, whereby not everyone has the 'luxury' to have one.

Couldn't agree more with htkaki. If your house / environment allows you to have a 106" screen, why bother about plasma / lcds? Sony 52" Bravia X costs around RM27K, HD803 Full HD PJ only around RM10K. If I had the dough i'll go for it already sad.gif

I m seriously thinking to buy HD65. RM3.7k I seriously think it's "affordable". I mean if you are ready to fork out RM4K-8K for a 40" LCD, why not go for PJ if ur environment allows right? hehe tongue.gif

No need to worry about dead pixels, only have to worry about burnt bulb. Even that the cost for changing a bulb is 'considerably' cheap. Whereas dead pixel on LCD or diodes of Plasma means 'Forever Bye Bye' biggrin.gif

just want to throw a little bit of 'poison' here biggrin.gif

i have been using hd70 (hd65 predecessor) for about 1 and 1/2 years already. bought it at 5k+. no regret. really enjoy watching movies at 106' size at the comfort of my home
now with hd65 at 3.7k (i have not seen hd65 picture quality, i think should be the same or maybe better than hd70).. what more can i say..its a steal

plus lots of $$$..will need to rob a bank first biggrin.gif

was very impressed with optoma hd65 when i auditioned it at the recent KLAV show...very bright, detailing of picture was excellent, compact design and of course reasonably priced

made a comparison with Infocus projector and wld say the hd65 is a better choice..somehow infocus picture rendition is bland and black level was average

Most probably still available after 5 yrs. But unlikely after 10 years. By that time, maybe new and far advanced pj already in the market.

i have a feeling bulb price would kinds appreciate...unlike the pj....so yeah...use the pj until the bulb kaput...then upgrade the pj ler if u have money...

coz to me to get 3000 hours would take me like at least 4 years of usage...haha...so 4 years from now surely 1080p pjs will be very cheap...and most prob there'd be a higher res pj on the works already...maybe a 4K pj?

Opsss,true also,thanks + sorry,hehe tongue.gif

i remembered saw the fix screen somewhere, maybe AV Design, the screen itself cost about 7k for a 84" if not mistaken,i think Drapper is much cheaper, wonder anyone carry that, mine is pull down 16:9 type as well.

OT a bit, talking about the screen,i once use the 16:9 grey screen but i found with my Panny PJ,white screen still a better choice, maybe panny contrast ratio 5500 : 1 not so good huh ?

Went and audit the hd65 today in midvalley. Mediaplex. The manager there kind enough to let me test hd65 abd hd70 even though he know i m not gonna buy it from him. I mistakenly told him i can get it for rm3750. He say his price rm4250, can't possibly meet my price. But still he showed it to me on a 40" screen. Can't really see any wow factor coz of lighting constraint and screen size. But the unit itself is really small. Planet earth was used for the audit today and it's very clear hehe.

But i think the manager wants to clear his hd70 stock. Keep on telling me hd70's chip is way better than hd65 and he's bundling hd70 with ps3 for RM5900.

You all think it's worth it? Here i can get hd65+ps3 for around RM5100. He's offering HD70+PS3 for RM5900. What i m paying the RM800 extra for? hehe for RM800 i can get a screen already tongue.gif

toytoy, you are right. With RM800, can get Draper's Luma 92" pull down screen in HDTV format (16:9).

106" pull down is abt RM860. Fixed is abt RM3-4K. Electric is almost double the price of pull down.

Yes, fixed screen is very expensive, which make it non-viable for us. How abt DIY (sending to photo frame shop to do it) like rx330?

Thanks for the price htkaki. DIY is a good idea. But wat material to use? Any cloth can do? I m thinking of getting a plywood or something smooth and paint it with white/gray paint hehe. Can get a lot of paint mixtures online that's suitable for PJs but dunno where to start lah.

Actually my living room wall is a little little bit greyish already. But problem is wall not smooth. Will the rough surface of the wall be very very obvious if i just project the image on the wall itself?

Thanks rx330, i'll try to look around for cheap cheap screen materials hehe. Must it be cloth? I've just got an idea but dunno feasible or not keke.

It will be expensive to get a big piece of wood that is 64"x96" right? So can i use plaster ceiling board? I can ask the plaster ceiling contractor to help right? They can fix a few boards together to get the size i want and I just frame it up or something lah. Then can hang on the wall ma. They can make the surface very very smooth wan right? hehe. Is it workable ar?

But end of the day i still think its a bit weird to have a fixed screen on the living room. I m thinking of having a retractable screen so that i can hide a LCD TV behind the screen or something. When not using PJ can still watch LCD TV, if wan to use PJ just pull the screen down. hehe

But this will be very expensive ler. Sigh, such dilemma lah. sad.gif

pull down screen still consider 'affordable'. For me, if got really ideal room, I wld go for DIY fixed screen. No point splurging on branded fixed screen that costs a bomb

Besides wood, you can also try to DIY the frame using pvc pipes?

Just that you need to think of the finishing (side linings) once you're done as the cloth is wrapping around the frame.

I've built my own 8' x 4' plywood screen and hang it on the wall.

Going to paint it with matt white murobond paint and primer. Let's hope the result is acceptable. Total cost for plywood, wood frame, brackets, nails, paint = RM180 Verifed that the paint is really matt and don't have hot spots.

The screen goo paint pricing is simply ridiculous i.e. Rm1100 for a 1 litre set of digital grey and base coat!

I also pulled my own cables thru plaster ceiling for HDMI, composite and power. Will pull ethernet cable from upstairs switch later. Got local handyman to install ceiling manhole so that can pull other cables if needed.

Very sharp eyes tongue.gif Yes, it might cause reflection due to the brightness of the projector beaming forward. Unless he use fabric or curtain to cover it up.

A very good start to DIY screen. Cant wait to see the final result.

yes, the bottom of the screen is 35" high coz my front speakers are 33" tall. ideally, the bottom edge should be about 18" lower but the speakers will get in the way; anyway will try it out first and see if its comfortable or not.

painting can be trickier than putting up cloth but its made a lot easier using rollers.

test shot last night with 2 layers of primer and 2 layers of top coat.

Using normal dvd player via component input; no upscaling; use camera zoom to show hd65 menu.

To naked eye under room lights, there are discernible slightly dark streaks on the plywood screen but in darkroom condition it becomes unnoticeable. Will put as many paint layers to finish the 1 litre bottle. The plywood is really soaking up the paint.

Will the plywood leave a lot of tiny tiny holes on the surface after soaking up the paint? I was thinking of using plywood and paint but afraid that the surface will be very uneven to produce a good and smooth surface.

I once make a fix screen with a 4' x 8' plywood, the "mate white non-refletive" type ,the result is ok but even it's non-reflextive,it still reflex some of the light in some bright scene.I then cover the whole screen with a see through grey cloth and the result is better. However,i finally took down the screen becos it doesn't looks good in my living room(no room for HT).Just a frenly advice,if u are using 4' x 8' plywood,it's better u make some black border on left/right/up/bottom to make it real 16:9 measurement which definately looks better and more "pro" ,hehe thumbup.gif

I also think of another option for DIY screen.Buy a pull down screen,"dismember" it kaw kaw and take out only the screen.Cut it into a 16:9 size and nail it on a plywood.Maybe it works wink.gif

Another thing,i saw from the pic ,ur HT room, all walls are with shinning tiles cover to about 5' tall.If it's using as HT room,i think the sound will be very "harsh"becos of the reflection. It's advice to do some treatment on the wall, especially the 2 side wall and the rear wall. For this,u can use some curtain.....juz my 2 cents smile.gif

my HT room is previous kitchen thus the 5ft high tiles. I do intend to later on treat the walls; firstly to make it non-reflective by painting, either hang dark heavy drapes and/or build some acoustic panels using polywool.

I'll also look for some black velvet cloth to frame up the screen and attach using velcro so that can adjust for different aspect ratios. All these will only come after I finish the basics of the screen, wiring, mounting the hd65, painting the walls, install lights i.e the messy work.

The pic below after 2 coats of primer and 2 top coats of matt white. I'm already into my fifth coat today covering up all of the paint streaks that you see below.

Mostly finished wiring and laying cable casing for electrical, composite video, RJ45 and HDMI (in black).

The screen now have 5 coats of paint and looks quite acceptable to naked eye. Will paint at least 2 more coats to tidy up.

I'm now thinking of painting dark grey the wall behind the screen-not keen on a black wall.

The HD65 is already ceiling mounted using an ABTUS ceiling mount which has a quick release mechanism for removing the pj easily.

still need to get things for the frame's lining.

yeah Ycs,

looking to diy the ceiling mount. not sure how much the new one will cost, last heard is about 200rm? or maybe i didn't look hard enough.

actually, i may have problem using those mounting that is mounted directly to the ceiling. My HT setup is on the 2nd floor's living room. To get the screen size I need, PJ is pushed back towards 1 end of the room. The ceiling which will hold the projector is actually a concrete slab. So if I were to drill holes on the concrete ceiling may risk water leaks.

Thus, going to try to diy an L joint type of projector mount.

Budget pj mount is abt RM130 only.

Yeah, drilling needs skill and ideal location. Water leaks will pose a big headache.

If no termites issue in the housing area, then timber flooring would look nice. But, I still prefers carpet as timber is still hard surface.

The AX-200 black level is superior. It has smooth screen technology to counter the chicken wire effect than often plagues LCD pj. A very good LCD projector with good reviews.

What to do? We don't have much choice over here when it comes to HT projector. I was once introduced an out-dated unit from local store. Luckily didn't rush in. sweat.gif

After reading through posts in here, HD65 seems to be best bang for bucks...anybody using the HD803?

Have finished painting the screen, a total of 7 layers which makes it quite evenly white without discernible patches.

I'm now considering colour scheme for the room and acoustic treatment of the walls and floor. Looks like the front wall got to be black whilst the ceiling may be grey cos don't like too much black.

Planning to diy acoustic panels for walls and still looking for the simplest method. Any inputs/ideas/recommendations will be appreciated.

Currently, searching for polywool and fabrics. Hope to source them this week.

my first impression on this pj is that the blacks are not as good as my old 4805...but maybe i havent really found the correct setting to get good blacks...

Below is the reason why you cant get a deep black from HD65 compare with Infocus SP4805:

1. HD65 dont have color processor like 4805 sort of DCDi Farouja chip. It using software(AI) rather than hardware(DCDi Chip) to improve depthness of contrast & color .

Infocus will come out with new model X9. http://www.projectorcentral.com/InFocus_Home-Play_Big_X9.htm.

X10 is a 1080P full HD projector. You got this point right half only.

My home? Nope. If you want, I can get X-9 or even X-10 for you smile.gif

Correction : X-9 is new entertainment pj.

Here's the new 1080p X-10 :

Have you tune your pj? I found out after tuning, the black is deeper and color especially skin tone is more accurate. Anyway, I'm using BENQ PE7700. Might upgrade next year if DLP DC4 1080p drop to around RM 13k.

Anyway, I'm using Spyder2 colorimeter with Calman v3 for tuning. The tuning is different than AVIA or DVE as you can tune greyscale and gamma + correct way to measure tint/saturation which affect your primary and secondary color. You need to access service menu to tune RGB Gain/Cut/Gamma. Manage to get Delta E below 3 for IRE 30 to 80.

finally managed to see HD65 in action...an av shop in Sban2
proper a/v room with all the bells n whistles. as dark as u like. proper pull down screen. but sourced using a normal dvd player playing pirates so obviously not the best material.

verdict...personally i wasnt too impressed with the PQ. dark scenes was quite poor. fighting scene from Fearless (when Jet Li fought in the rain at the restaurant against the other master) was not clear at all, perhaps it was the pirate dvd but PQ is not there at all.

i would say the experience of a 100" screen did blow me away but it simply didnt cut it for me...in terms of PQ

will try again with a hd dvd player or blu-ray n also to try panny ax200

p/s: got an offer of optoma EP727 for RM3k ? any comments on this model ? good price ?

The Missing Element:
The missing element in most home theaters is proper acoustical treatment. Why is the room so important? The reason is that sound must eventually travel the acoustic path from the loudspeakers to our ears. The sound that we hear in a
room is a combination of the direct sound from the speakers and the indirect reflections from the room surfaces and room contents. Indirect reflections can cause acoustic distortion, so that you end up listening to the room and not the intended soundtrack. Hence, reflection control is a central problem in creating rooms that allow a suspension of disbelief.

Anyone interested in Spyder2 + Calman v3 (license copy)? I'm thinking to upgrade to Optic Pro Spectrometer. I'm selling for RM 700. Calman is easy to use with their step to step contrast/brightness setup, greyscale, primary and secondary color adjustment.

yes, i diy'ed the 4 panels myself using 1"x2"x8' timber, 1/8" plywood backing the frame, just nail up the frame with the plywood back.

fill up the frame with rockwool up to 3" thick - i made two 3" thick panels and two 2" thick panels
user posted image
btw, rockwool is cool
user posted image

then wrap up the whole panel with 5mm PU foam using stapler gun.
user posted image

final result
user posted image

approx cost per panel is RM80 each. timber from timber yard wherever you can find them, rockwool and foam from aircon installer

I'm using these panels for first reflections.

next project is to make bass traps for the 4 corners. then tackle front wall and ceiling.

Yours is cheaper than me , the different is my rockwool is above the frame then wrapped with fabric . also back is hollow and doesnt cover with plywood.

ycs, didnt know taht you are so good in DIY. I am a lousy fella in this. Thought of making my own for both acoustic panel and bass trap. But, worried that the end result is a mess.

Guys, make sure the back is hollow. And float your panel from the wall with at least 2" gap. The reason for this design is to double the effectiveness of your panel. The sound will travel pass the panel in first pass, reflect back by the wall (reduce sound wave) and go through the panel for 2nd pass. I found a lot of reference from internet. Will take the picture of my panel if anyone is interested on how to float the panel. I just screw in 4 x 2" aluminium tube with rubber feet at 4 corners and hang it on the wall like picture frame. This will allow you to arrange the panel in the most flexible way. If you feel it is over absorb, just shift or reduce the panel to experiment.

Bass trap at 4 corner is a must. The bass is control and deep.

Diffusor actually can get it quite cheap from hiwaylaser. Around RM 150 per piece.

Thanks. I ask the carpenter to create a frame 3 feet from wall. Then wrap the frame with speaker cloth. All equipment is hidden behind the frame (front speaker, center speaker, receiver, htpc, sub). The panel below the screen can be open to access to the equipment.

nice set up pierreye,i like the back panel of ur screen paint in black. If can paint both side walls to some darker colour lagi best(not black, maybe dark green) tongue.gif

btw,u hide the front spekaer at the back oso? The room acoustic and treatment also nicely done, like the absortber too.I remembered last time in Hi Fi audio room the 1st absortber on both side wall we used to place about 5-6 fts from the front spk.We also place some "triangle pillow" in the front wall/ceiling corner. However, that depends on room size, spk placement and type of spk used.Aslo, the corner of back wall with some treatment like urs also nice. What about the middle of the back wall? Do u place an absortber there too?

Or is there a local name for these materials?

I'll take some photo today for "behind the scene" equipment.

As for the panel, you need the triangle wood at the corner to hold the frame and the panel. Just screw the aluminium tube and rubber feet on the triangle. For hanging it's simple. Just screw a nail in the wall, and hang it like a picture frame.

Actually the back of the screen is not painted black. The whole panel at the back of the screen is frame wrap with speaker cloth (so that I can see my equipment in the dark and also accoustically transparent for speaker). My screen is 114" brilliant white Carada fixed screen. I previously use motorized screen for my old HT room and wrinkle is the major problem So I advise all of you to go for fixed screen if possible.

I'm thinking of getting diffusor for the back wall either using hanging bookshelf method or just buy from hiwaylaser. Reason I didn't paint the front side wall black is it looks ugly. Anyway, from my experience as long as you have thick enough black border, it's fine. Also, remember to use matte paint for your wall. Don't use Pearl Glo paint. You need to sit at least 5 ft from the diffusor for it to be effective.

As for the height, the screen is 3 ft from the floor as I need to place my center speaker below the screen. So far, no problem watching movie on the first row of the sofa. Second row sofa is perfect. I'm thinking to change the first row sofa to a 3 seats recliner chair with arm rest + cup holder.

You can get semi rigid fiberglass from www.polyglass.com.my. Those that you get from aircon installer is too soft and density might not be ideal.

My advice is room treatment is important. My previous HT room is not treated and only with thick curtain on both side to absorb the sound reflection. I can only watch movie at maximum 85db. In the new theater room, 95db is still comfortable and everything is under control.

Update on automation:
If you see the picture of my switch, there is 3 blue lighted button switch. That's a Senzo switch (developed by local company, http://www.newict.com/) which accept IR, RF and programmable switch. I use Logitech harmony one to do the macro programming as follow:

Enter Theater activity: Light and Aircon switch on.
Watch Movie: Light turn off, projector/receiver/sub turn on. If I pressed pause button, the light will turn on. Press play, light will turn off.

I love Harmony Remote but take me one whole day to get the programming right.

Harmony one. It's quite intelligent as if some of your equipment is not turn on, with a help button, it'll give you step by step troubleshoot guide.

Best combination of touch screen + keypad.

You don't screw the rubber feet to the wall. The rubber feet is just pushing your panel 2" from the wall. You only screw a nail into your wall and hang your panel. Just pull a wire across your panel around 1/4 measure from the top of your panel height. I'll take some picture tonight.

Bass trap a little bit tricky. You need to get your carpenter nail it at four corner of your panel to your wall. Then use black silicon to glue up the edge.

I am thinking of doing it the simple way like this.
Attached Image

just hang the panel in the corners.

I read from website that the acoustic treatment should be covered with at least 60% , corner should be bass trap with thicker layer of panel and frame , side wall will prefer high/md range absorber , where front/ back are covered with diffusor , what is your comment .

covering 60% of a room seems too much and may make the room sound dead.

most "experts" recommend that the key is at least covering major spots in a room- 4 corners, 2 sidewalls and ceiling for first reflections, the tri-corner areas, diffusor for back wall; i.e. like the diagram in earlier post.

many also recommend to have a "live" floor ( hard floor) so that some reflections can still occur.

Not covering all 60% area with mid/low bass trap , like side /back wall , diffusors are applied , room will not be too dead . However some audio expert suggest to have absorber instead of diffusor on side wall. But this will depend on the room condition .

It cant absorb low bass and bass will rebound. So bass will not deep.

bass trap---to trap the bass and avoid rebound
diffusor----to reflect incoming sound to many different direction ----to minimize echo

why is it on some movies, if i set my dvd to upscale to 720p and connect it to hd65 via hdmi...the jagged edge staircase effect on diagonal lines are still prominent (e.g shots of roof. pyramid) although the colours and depth on the movies are improved? But on some movies, there's no problem...

so a bit confused here...

depends if the MDF is bearing any heavy load, but i would use screws or nails to be sure that it stays fixed and not be loosened by vibrations.

View distance is around 1.4x. My screen is around 8' width and seating distance is close to 11'. Can't go bigger as it'll block the access to the side door. The screen height is 3' from the floor. I just change my sofa to 3 seated recliner chair and I'll say the height is just nice when you recline the chair. Using HTPC, I had no problem too when sit up straight as I can use Media Player Classic to move wide screen movie to the bottom of the screen.

The recliners are not expensive. RM 2.6k for half leather and RM 3.3k for full leather.
