It has to do with the perception of people that Samsung are only into smartphones to test out their technical wizardry, and not as a core business ala HTC or ASUS for example who live and die by how well they sell in this market.
Be that as it may, I like mine although not as much as I do my regular Symbian phones. It just so happened that I was at The Curve last week and I saw that they only had one unit for sale. Grabbed it just because... haha... even though as some people who know me know that I have a thing against WM in general. The thing that first attracted me was the QWERTY thumboard. The second was the mouse. I suppose most people would disagree with me and say they hate it. But for me, I rather like using it and I find it easier than having to tap-tap-tapping with a stylus all the time. The normal disadvantage to having a WM QWERTY device is the screen orientation. It is square, which means if you're looking to play games you have to look elsewhere. Most games are designed for 320X240 screens and wouldn't be playable on this machine. If you use yours mostly for texting, though then the many varied input methods and especially the QWERTY is a God-send. WiFi and HSDPA work as they should, i.e. fast and reliable. Sound on the speaker could be louder but you can't have everything. Supposed to have GPS but I'm bad with those, so I don't have any opinion on that. No 3.5mm headphone jack is about the only complaint I have, but it does have A2DP Bluetooth. It shares the same connector as my i550, so at least I'll be into Samsung for a while. haha All in all, a bargain at the price of a buck below 1900. I can't even imagine what the price would be if it were HTC branded, maybe more than 3K? |

A friend had been using one for 2 weeks. Agreed with the keyboard ease of use. Texting is way easier. centre button is a "slide/touch" mouselike cursor. I'm impressed. Way cheaper than my d810 too.

Held it in PDA expert in lowyat. The price is very attractive but I don't like the small screen and the QWERT buttons. I can say for sure, if this samsung device had a slider keyboard, they got my money that day.

Bought the device two days ago. Great feeling about this. Surprisingly cheap - got it for 1999 with 4G MicroSD. I don't mind the square screen as it kind of easy to see and scroll. I am really taken in by the finger mouse pad. I think it works so well that I seldom use the stylus. The color is vibrant. Love the QWERTY key pad too. Kind of like Palm but a lot lighter and slim. So far no problem with GPS and maps. Have been playing with it all day. More of a business PDA phone. Cerain games might not look too good.

Hi, Ive been using this PDA for 2 weeks, got it before they had the 4GB promo (sigh, i need more space for my songs) at PDA expert Midvalley
its a good buy considering the value & features u get from it.. the full keyboard is useful but its taking me sometime to get used to it.. im a fast sms typer but with this one im a bit slow haha battery is ok, minumum usage of application can last for 2 days.. using the wife, bluetooth etc will surely use more power, so i'll get like 1 day before charging.. samung provides an extra battery, comes in handy while on the go.. the GPS works find (no issues with the display) I put Google earth on this and its great! im not into gaming so much so i wont worry me if games can be dsiplayed nicely... what else, hmmm yeah, somebody said the design is a bit odd.. but then its sleek and can easily for a shirt pocket.. im waiting for a case for this once, i only have the screen protector on it now... the only concern is sometimes its a bit sluggish to respond to me.. like when i open an application or try to unlock the phone.. im a 1st time PDA user so i dont know whether this is common.. in short, its a good buy especially if one cannot afford something pricing above rm2k... there's a lot of features which will make other PDA owners envy you This post has been edited by pizi87: Apr 1 2008, 12:49 PM |

QUOTE(pizi87 @ Apr 1 2008, 02:54 PM) Navigation(GPS)The communicator makes use of the gpsOne chip, bundled in the Qualcomm MSM 6260 platform, supporting A-GPS technology (tracks your location through the carrier's network). However, this chip doesn't get along with third-party applications, as all GPS-enabled solutions, including the Samsung i780 are bound to deal with only one application - Navigon, also dubbed as Mobile Navigator in the Windows Mobile environment. While you can actually install some extra navigation software, rest assured, it won't be able to employ the built-in chip, and thus, won't track your location on the map. We got our hands on the unit with disabled GPS, however Google Maps successfully identified the bundled GPS chip and tried to locate some satellites... for like 30 minutes, but sadly, to no avail. ********************************************************************************************************** is the GPS function of this phone is compatible with mapking . or other commong gps softwares?? |

Tried it out.. the screen sharpness is better and the resolution 320x320 but.... this would be a problem for many third party apps as most of it support 320x240 or 240x240 or VGA 640x480

A friend of mine bought i780. Good device still i personaly dont like telescopic stylus and the screen harder to tap and not as responsive (P3650 got better 'feel'). Other than that - i780 is a good buy.
I have one question though, her i780 cannot display MMS directly to her phones. Went to maxis to 'adjust' to no avail. When MMS received - the phones just prompt a reminder saying bla...bla ..bla received MMS and have to download the MMS. Any idea why? I checked the MMS setting...everthing seems to be in perfect order. Thanks |

Finally found the official thread for i780.
All in all, I'm quite happy with i780. WM6 Pro is still not user-friendly as compared to Symbian S60. HSDPA, GPS & WiFi works perfectly. My only argument is the "sound and notification" which is bad. You can install your ringtone in storage card but in the end i780 will use the "default" ringtone. U need to put all the ringtones in the windows\ring folder... eats up your phone storage capacity. Battery (1480mAh) is pretty bad. Only last for 1 day usage of GPS (1 hour), HSDPA (2 hours), WiFi (30 min.), voice call (30 min.), video call (15 min.), Video+Camera (10 min.). Many claimed the 320x320 screen size lack of support for proprietary softwares. Even without RealVGA being installed, there are still essential softwares that can be installed. Since i780 is not popular at lowyat.net, you will discover more secrets at PPCSG forum. Did I mentioned Garmin Mobile XT + Malsingmaps works like a charm in i780? Now i'ml able to find shortcuts to anywhere i want. I luv GPS... |

The message tone is in the Event drop-down button. You should see "Messanging : New text msg" in the LIST.

I am thinking to buy one too but my friend is complaining the volume buttons are not locked even he locks the phone.
When he keeps it in the pocket, the volume button will be pressed accidentally and mute the phone. Anyone facing the some problem? |

you guys know that this PDA phone is unable to do hard reset( By pressing the combo keys) if you cannot enter into the OS normally. It is a big thread to PDA users, you bricked your phone.
I have seen in PPCSG that Samsung Singapore is offering to upgrade the ROM, currently they are using the same ROM like us. Improvement is add Hard Reset Combo Keys if windows fail to start up, and the mouse act like right click if keep on pressing. I have Email Samsung M'sia quite some time enquire about the ROM upgrade services, yet no reply from them. |

The new so called "ROM" is available already. It's called i780DXHC1. Previously it was DXHA1. And yes, this new "ROM" can do hard reset. But the HSDPA/3G signal is degraded. That what's happened to my unit.

i guess i will have to wait till the software comes to the stable part... it does look good and the specs are
Added on May 1, 2008, 9:33 pmi got my unit yesterday nite... tried the feature, it is actually quite good. no doubt mine is the earlier batch, hence the firmware still outdated. but frankly, i used this pda and i quite satisfy with the speed. qwerty is not really a big issue although i have hard time pressing... maybe i bring it to summit tmr to have an upgrade. Just bought it about a week ago. Overall, I am quite happy with it.
As for the key lock for volume button, as long as switching to power saving mode (a short press on the power button), I won't have any problem accidently pressing the volume key anymore. There is one thing bothering me, the phone function was turned off automatically for 2 - 3 times since I bought it. I can't enable it from the wireless manager, have to restart the phone. Still trying to figure out what causes this, anyone facing the same problem? May I suggest all the i780 owners to "divert" your input to PPCSG forum. There, they have more active users than this forum. No offence.

don't compare E90 with i780 lerrr.. totally two different PDAs...i780 is running on Windows Mobile 6 Pro while E90 is on Symbian S60...
But in terms of user friendlyness, I personally prefer Symbian OS. |

It is my first time to purchase a PDA bro, instead of mapking... you can try with garmin.Mapking is made for resolution at 240x240... but i780 has 320x320 screen, so i think it might look jagged. However in Garmin Mobile XT, i tested and confirm working without any jagged graphics. only thing you need to find is the way to install it ahem*... I guess I have to wait 1~2 weeks for my i780. Need to know few items while waiting for it
1. Can it really take 16GB SD? If I want to use it to store video and mp3, what speed SD card should I use? 2. How is the mp3 sound quality on i780? Currently, I'm listening to iPod nano and iRiver ifp-899... is i780 comparable for sound quality? 3. I used to have PDA Axim x51V with WM3. Can create documents of Mobile Powerpoint, Excel, Word with i780? Hope all the sifus here help me here.... |

up to 16GB microSD.
I youtubed iPAQ 612c/614c and found out that there's no front camera for videocall. And without QWERTY thumbboard, iPAQ is still less appeal for my taste. |

The store where i bought it installed it and they have lots of other programs to choose for free. Mapking has a voice navigator so its useful if you're on the road or something. but ive never tried using it when driving. maybe i know my way well ehehe other than that i think its a value for money PDA. of course if you can afford something more pricier, you've got many models to choose like HTC and Dopod. Im happy with my i780 |

hard reset meaning like set default to factory settings. For example if you install a program and when you turn on your pda it goes into an endless loop that prevents you from accessing any functions.
Hard reset usually is a combination of keys you press which will default all settings back to factory default. Like my treo 650, i need to press the reset button while holding down both power and up button simultaneously (i think.. long time hard reset aldy hehe). |

To all current and future owners of i780, please goto PPSCG forum. So sorry to say that, for i780, this LY forum is not as active as PPCSG. You may proceed to
http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=99361 As for the hard reset, YES. i780 supports hard reset button combo. Only for ROM C1 and above. You might ask me what is ROM? Well, that's why you should proceed to PPCSG forum above. |

Hey Masculine, do tell me the ROM version both radio and PDA once you get it. And see if you can do hard reset using the combination keys as well + use MSN via wifi. If yes then i can safely say you have the latest ROM.
No use chasing new stuffs, you will never be #1 for long these days Oh yeah, do take a pic and show us some local phone pics oso |

i asked my bro who went to lowyat recently, and he got this quote
RM1799 4GB Micro SD 2 battery i think should come with Travel charger, earphone, and USB cable. Screen protector not sure. Why didn't they include the pda holder that sticks to car windscreen? Most GPS phone will include that in bundle. I think Samsung forgot to think about this lah.. Anyway, my bro bought one from PC Fair last time (around RM1600+) The ROM version i think it's similar to the Singapore one.. the oldest ROM actually which does not have the hard reset keys combo. And yeah one time he can't access his SMS. So he hard reset and all ok again. He said GPS is very good, he used it in Indonesia too and works great. |

hi guys!
I never posted anything here before, but now decided to join the discussion.. I bought the i780 on 12th June.. and extremely happy with it. I got it at RM1788 (it was 1899 before) from The Brilliant PDA Expert in Lowyat. With the phone I got: 2 batteries 1 travel charger with battery case 1 handsfree 1 USB cable 1 stylus (never used it!) 1 micro sd 4gb 1 screen protector (actually 2 coz that guy ruined the first one) they offered me to install softwares FOC, but I declined since I like the thrill of customising my phone myself. I had an iPaq before and I already have all the softwares I needed. I spent 1 week to try out some softwares for compatibility with the screen. so far I got the setup that I liked and it was similar to my old iPaq. some games are not compatible but its not that important. no problems migrating my calendar entries and contacts from the iPaq to the i780. gps also works fine. the firmware is DXHD1 which I think is quite current in Malaysia, I will only update if samsung came out with WM6.1 for i780. I was too excited with the phone I forgot to try the hard reset button combo. now too lazy already. only problem so far is fring always hang. not sure why, but i use it with wifi. anyone experience the same..? |

Have you or anyone else here tried realvga? Heard it solves a lot of compatibility issues with the screen. |

neato4u,
i'm using realvga 96dpi.. great applicaton. if it wasn't for realvga, maybe i wont buy this phone.. i was afraid that spb pocket plus is not compatible.. but it turn out ok.. eddiey_5, my adobe reader couldn't even load. later i will try to reinstall see what happen.. i don't even use the stylus on my ipaq.. i use happy tapping keyboard with iphone skin for typing. now that i780 has qwerty, and the screen is flushed some more.. everything can be done without the stylus.. and its faster that way too.. |

I love it because of its GPS built in..even I dont know the roads in KL but I can go everywhere without lost my way in KL..hehe but I am having a problem with my samsung i780, sometimes there is a pop-up window asking me "do you want permanently delete your stoage card to make your message readable?". this is happen during my battery is low. is anyone have an idea this problem? I went to PDA exert, they said the softwares are corrupted, so they formatted and install me the new one. for the firs time I was facing this problem, I think because of my battery was low..statement " notification charge your battery to avoid loss any data" is it one of the reason for the software was corrupted? |

To Masculine,
yeah..neato4u is true..u can go to any pda store and ask for them to install for you..i prefer u go to PDA Expert shop at Low yatt, the booth is in front of Digi Handphone Booth at 1st level..they will show you their catalog.. GPS can be used by diff software application-mapking / garmin- and I prefer to use garmin bcoz I think it is more friendly for user..easy to use. when they install GPS software for u(mapking/garmin) u need to ask them to install together the map. u can choose what map location u wanted.(they will ask u what map u want before u ask them..he=P) normally they will install Malaysia map, and hong kong. but if u are willing to go to others country, England or Singapore for example, u can ask them to put England's road map.easy!! dont need to install every map in the world bcoz it will waste your memory card. |

Added on July 9, 2008, 1:57 pmWent to The Summit today to upgrade my ROM. Too bad they only have D1 version not the E1.... I tried to inquire regarding the navphone software that should have come with my phone. The CSR said that only Singapore set carries E1 and Navphone.... Good news is, she said the E1 and WM6.1 coming soon. This post has been edited by Masculine: Jul 9 2008, 01:57 PM |

Managed to install iGo8 version 8.0.0.41506 and navigate using my Samsung i780. Overall, compared to Garmin MXT and Mapking (out of 10 scale):
Graphical User Interface iGo8 UI = 9 (vivid and professional) GMXT UI = 8 Mapking = 5 Map Layout iGo8 (Oct 2007) = 5 GMXT (MalsingMaps @ July 2008) = 9 Mapking (MalsingMaps @ July 2008) = 9 POI database iGo8 = 5 GMXT (MalsingMaps) = 8 Mapking (MalsingMaps) = 8 Routing iGo8 = 8 GMXT = 8 Mapking= 9 (more options) Route Re-calculation iGo8 = 9 (fastest) GMXT = 8 Mapking = 8 Voice Navigation Reliability iGo8 = 7 GMXT = 8 (better at roundabout) Mapking = 7 Satellite Lock (A-GPS enabled) iGo8 = 9 (very quick) GMXT = 7 Mapking = 8 GPS Sensitivity iGo8 = 8 (managed to lock inside my room - I'm surprised as well!) GMXT = 6 Mapking = 7 (only at balcony) Heat Release (after 10 minutes usage) iGo8 = warm GMXT = hot Mapking = hot As of today, iGo8 is a matured product but not reliable for certain country (eg. Malaysia) due to the map and POI quality. In order to use the POI, you have to convert the .kml files into .upoi format. You guys may download this user.upoi file and put in the "iGo8/Save" folder. This .upoi file contains Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan POIs. |

QUOTE(Jag @ Jul 21 2008, 10:37 AM) Glad to have found this thread. This is my 1st PDA phone, but I feel it is a very good value and functionality wise.... considering other competitor like diamond and iphone.... the keyboard look smallish but after using it for few days, sms is a breeze. I always hate blueberry look but now I appreciate the keyboard more.... Battery wise is quite good if you're not using GPS.... furthermore, samsung gives 2 batteries.... at RM1800 it is a steal.... I need to know what is the best price & from where I can get this phone? At The Curve - rm 1899 with many softwares incl GPS/Maps. At LYP, one shop said 1799 but without any extra software. Plz help. Thanks. If you want to buy Garmin XT... better buy legal one online for USD99. In low yat the guy charge me rm150.... at the end, after eeprom upgrade, I cannot reinstalled it even when I had proper back up.... Garmin XT is very good and combined with latest malsing map v2.28 is a lethal map. So a dumb like me will have less chance of getting lost. |

Hi all bros, finally I am one of the family member of sammy i780. I just bought it yesterday. RM1799 with 12 months 0% installment come with 4gb memory card, and 2 batteries. Additional RM125 for Samsung wep210 Bluetooth handfree, 1 rubber pouch and 1 leather pouch. Software can be update anytime i go back to the shop.
This is a great phone, very easy to use when for typing but need some time to practice. Overall I would say it is a good buy. I will post the pic later on. Coz i am still busy testing the phone |

I do believe during PC Fair the price is alot cheaper. Previous PC Fair the price was RM1699 with standard accessories. ANyway, welcomm to the i780 group. Try install NavNGo iGO8 GPS navigator. It's way better than Garmin/MapKing.

I used GPSGate on my old ipaq..
There are some issues with it. One of the most annoying is it changed my date to a past date everytime after using it. For my i780 I dont want to use GPSGate anymore so I cant install Mapking. Besides, Mapking does not display properly on my screen.. If you search around, I'm sure you'll find some alternatives.. |

Do you mind to PM me where can I got this software? Thanks. Getting the software (MapKing, Garmin Mobile XT or iGO8) is the stage one to use GPS.The next stage is to get the latest map for Malaysia, Singapore, etc. You can install the software and test the GPS chip is working or not. But to fully utilise the GPS voice navigator, u need a decent map. Just to inform that, each software will have its own map format. MapKing map data cannot be used by Garmin or iGO8. From my point of view, what I can suggest is you try Garmin first as the software is easy to get (trial or purchase) and the map can be obtained for free from Malsingmap website/forum. |

theme i think currently for the official theme u can download it from samsung web site becoz of the screen resolution 320x320 at the moment is really hard to find a suitable one unless you know how to do install the theme through 3rd party software like spb mobile shell 2.1 and etc.. I been searching around but too bad try and error so many times but still can't fit the problem. Now I just hope samsung can launch their 6.1 rom asap so that we can flash it

I read it from other forum the function of the camera is a little bit weak. But overall I am still satisfied with it. The picture u had taken will be a little bit blur if the camera did not the absorb enough of light. So you must wait until the light balance is steady then only press the shooting button. So it will be slow on taking picture Added on August 6, 2008, 1:35 pm QUOTE(-ahtiang- @ Aug 6 2008, 01:31 PM) hmm.. try searching using Where To > Food, Hotels... > Spell Name this is the way I am using it, but seems like some location cannot be detect due to the place has no POI normally i use this options to search and it works... Hi Everyone..
I just bought this i780 last few weeks, got a prize at RM1790 with standard accessories,4gig MicroSD card, screen protector and gift.At first the guy at the shop ask me to choose between bluetooth headset or a casing as a gift.So i choose the bluetooth headset(Jabra). Then later after setup being done and paid by cash, they add in the casing (Capdase Bi-fold casing) as another gift for me.Thats cool. So far everything works fine for me,the only problem is my 3g video call doesnt works. Before that I've gone to Celcom to upgrade my card to 3g and they have done all the settings for me.My MMS is working but not the 3g video call.I did a few test with my friend,my video call is connected but i didnt see any video on screen and not even any voice come out from the caller. Not sure whether the problem is with the connection setting or the phone setting.Appreciate if anyone here can help me bout this. Thanks. This post has been edited by Netaddictz: Aug 17 2008, 02:03 AM |

H1 ROM is available but not at the Service Centre. Google to find out more.
Overall, H1 ROM gets the unit faster and stable WiFi connection to hotspots. |

It's so frustrating that Samsung does not allow you to download official ROM's n flash it yourself.
Strangely, they let you do that for the Omnia =.=''' |

QUOTE(kerazul @ Sep 2 2008, 03:27 AM) It's so frustrating that Samsung does not allow you to download official ROM's n flash it yourself. fingers cross as rumours says that they will release it when they release the WM 6.1 ROM which has been so far delayed...Strangely, they let you do that for the Omnia =.=''' |

Bad news guys, after taking into consideration i decided to buy a dopod d810 instead. |

nope. not true. HH1 ROM is for WM6.0. BUT....
if u install the XDA Developer HH1 ROM by EFN, he has included it in WM6.1. nevetherless, this ROM is not stable under WM6.1. eg. the GPS won't work for HH1 under WM6.1. |

For almost the same price, I would prefer E71. The only winning point to get i780 is the touch-screen interface which is easier to navigate around rather than pokking the D-pad conventionally.Does this phone capable and really excel in reminding me of meetings, tasks, syncro with my Microsoft outlook email, calendaring, memos, etc??? cheers~ |

I have a few questions on Samsung i780. Hope members here can help to answer.
1. What is the price now and what is included in the package? 2. I heard that we need to edit registry to increase the speakers volume. Anybody have the link to show how to do this? 3. Any problems with the GPS and does the GPS work without A-GPS assistance (means pure GPS only)? 4. How's the handwriting recognition? Easy to use? 5. If I wan to type sms or a note, can I use handwriting and keyboard concurrently or I can only choose one input method at a time? 6. What is the resolution and fps of the video recoding? Thanks. QUOTE(okk @ Oct 12 2008, 09:40 AM) I have a few questions on Samsung i780. Hope members here can help to answer. 1. RM1699 is the cheapest having 2 batteries, 4GB microSDHC card, screen protector plus standard accessories. If you get a price the same but without the first three 'bonus' pack (i.e batteries, card & SP), then you better survey some more.1. 5. If I wan to type sms or a note, can I switch use handwriting and keyboard concurrently or I can only choose one input method at a time? Thanks. 2. It's not registry. It's called Mirage Control Utility. At the standby screen, simply key in *#0002*28346#. More info : http://i780.wordpress.com/2008/05/13/i780-volume-tweaks/ 3. The GPS works flawlessly with Garmin MXT and iGO8. As for MapKing, you have to install PortSplitter in order for MapKing to operate properly. The A-GPS will accelerate the satellite locking from 5 minutes to less than 30 seconds. But A-GPS will use the data connection (GPRS/3G) in order to locate your position in immediate manner. You can set A-GPS to update by hours session or completely turn it off. 4. Handwriting recognition (ie Transcriber) is very user friendly. You can control how the unit recognises each characters (i.e A to Z plus numbers) as well as the speed of recognition. 5. You can switch as many times as you wish. But i780 has no T9 virtual keyboard. So, it's only virtual QWERTY keyboard, or transcriber or hard QWERTY keyboard. If you're asking for battery life, it's fair I would say. Since Samsung is generous enuff to provide 2 batteries, i780 can survive on average 1.5 day/battery if you use all the functions in less than 15 minutes each. The applications/features that will suck the battery vigoriously are GPS and WiFi. Thanks for the reply!
One more question, for A-GPS, the connection to network is only made during initial lockup rite? Or is there constant download of location from the network? I am asking this because I am worried that I will be billed with heavy amount of GPRS/3G usage... |

u're not downloading any data from any network. only googlemap and nokia works that way. windows mobile connects directly via GPS, cuz the GPS is strong enough that it doesnt need any net connection to locate your position (unlike noob
nokia) EDIT: Oh shit u said A-GPS. sorry. all the above i said was GPS. Yes, AGPS will incure charges. but dun worry. u cant use it unless calling your operator and enabling it. dun worry, GPS is good enuf. i've no idea why anyone would want AGPS running indoors. useless plus drains battery and AGPS charges is separate from data charges. ask your operator This post has been edited by Baronic: Oct 12 2008, 11:57 AM |

QUOTE(Baronic @ Oct 12 2008, 11:55 AM) If you are under Celcom, GPRS/3G service is automatically activated even though you did not sign-up for their 3G service. This is because, the 3G SIM card has ben 3G-enabled. But to 'skip' the auto-activated of this 3G service, you just delete the APN configuration in i780. Therefore, whenever i780 try to use the 3G service, it will not connect to it because you have deleted the APN configuration. There is also an application called "NoData" and similar that will totally stop i780 from launching the data connection. This is a lot safer. And it's free. One thing you should know about i780 is whenever you successfully connected to 3G service, it will not auto-disconnect if idle. A-GPS is separated application in i780. It is called Enhanced GPS. i780 will only use A-GPS if we launch the Enhanced GPS application. But if we set it to auto download, then i780 will automatically launch AGPS and immediately download the necessary data without any warning. To activate the Enhanced GPS function, we need to click at the "XTRA Data Download" button. After that i780 will warn that charges will be incurred if proceed as shown below: samsung i780 may be different, i dun know, please clarify ![]() I have used the GPS without SIM card. Of course Garmin MXT is the right client for this stunt. And i780 will take 5 minutes to lock because there is no SIM card for it to connect to A-GPS. You can try to use your GPS without SIM card and clock how long it needs to lock the satellite. My bet is that your unit will take more than 2 minutes to lock. As for Nokia, the answer is yes and no. If we use Nokia Maps, and if we have saved the maps in the memory card, no data will be downloaded when we navigate. But, if no maps are pre-installed in the unit, 3G service will constantly download data/maps from nokia server on-the-fly. The same concept also applicable to Google Maps which constantly downloading data from Google server whenever we navigate. I've just realised that using iGO8 as the GPS client will change your i780 clock to Hong Kong GMT. Luckily Hong Kong GMT is similar to Malaysia, i.e. GMT +8. I know Enhanced GPS used data, cuz it uses the network to help determine location and increase accuracy, such that it can even be used indoors.
but we are talking about A GPS. EGPS and AGPS are two different things |

QUOTE(okk @ Oct 12 2008, 03:15 PM) Nope. You can immediately drive right after you've launched the GPS client and determined your destination. BUT, it'll take about 5 minutes to lock your position if you're driving compared to about 60 seconds if you stand still in open sky. Besides, the voice navigation won't start without locking to the satellite. Therefore, if you know where you are going (roughly...) you may start driving WHILE waiting for the unit to lock and calculate the routing for you.Added on October 12, 2008, 3:40 pm QUOTE(Baronic @ Oct 12 2008, 03:16 PM) I know Enhanced GPS used data, cuz it uses the network to help determine location and increase accuracy, such that it can even be used indoors. Alternatively, it may use standard non-assisted GPS, which is slower and less accurate, but does not lead to network charges for data traffic". More : http://www.cnet.com.au/cartech/gps/0,20004...39289510,00.htm "assisted GPS uses your mobile phone's active data connection to send the limited GPS signal it has received to an Assistance Server" Therefore, A-GPS or Enhanced GPS are identical. It's like branding/name convention only. And, if you are using unlimited 3G service, you won't care about the data has been consumed becoz you pay flat amount every month and you don't feel the pain of data transfer. Nowadays, 3G service is a must, at least for me... This post has been edited by dgtel2: Oct 12 2008, 04:05 PM |

QUOTE(Baronic @ Oct 12 2008, 03:16 PM) I know Enhanced GPS used data, cuz it uses the network to help determine location and increase accuracy, such that it can even be used indoors. Enhanced GPS is how samsung call AGPS . yes when u activate AGPS in i780 it will download a small amount of data , cost around 10 sen only. so why wait for 5 minutes, just use the AGPS/EGPSbut we are talking about A GPS. That is why you have crappy yet expensive data package from Maxis and Celcom.but we are talking about A GPS. EGPS and AGPS are two different things A(ssisted)GPS and E(nhanced)GPS the same. well, mugen has an extremely good reputation for their batteries. their casings are solid, and battery life appears to be good. i'd recommend it over Cameron Sino or any other China company extended batteries. their casings are weak and inferior IMHO

is the sgh i780 have hot swap features of its micro sd card?
it seems that whenever i eject the micro sd, and insert it again...my i780 turns to be very lag and not responsive. I have to soft reset it. The same goes to whenever I plug in my i780 as a removable disk to laptop using usb. after ejecting the usb, my pda will freeze. anyone having the same problem with mine? how to solve this issues. the phone is great, only those two matters annoyed me really much. sigh... |

for that program missing during startup - search, download, and use pocket machanic.
for sound issue, try using wow srs and see if that helps. |

Guys,
This may sound embarrassing but I need your help. I accidentally deleted File Explorer in my i780. Although I still have Resco Explorer, I still want to retain the original file explorer. Is there any way or site that I can download the original software? Or can one of you send me the program file for me to put back in my phone...? |

Restart the phone and it'll change. As for reading chinese character, dload attachment & do the following; 1. Copy the "sunglobePatched.cab" to your device and click on it. Do install it in your device NOT storage! 3. Soft reset your device to activate the new chinese font. This is much less space-taking & serves ppl that doesn't want to install big progs like CEStar. |

any of you have upgrade to 6.1 having any instability issue?
I went to Melaka SC, they told me that the currnet version is not good enough in terms of stability. wm 6 sms mode. we cannot directly sms name where it is put under contact "assistant" . we can only choose the phone no under "mobile phone". I wonder if WM6.1 can let us write the name directly in the sms if we type the "assistant" name? This post has been edited by fhfoomelaka: Jan 27 2009, 01:24 PM |

QUOTE(fhfoomelaka @ Jan 27 2009, 01:22 PM) any of you have upgrade to 6.1 having any instability issue? I'm using the PDXHL2 ROM (WM 6.1) I went to Melaka SC, they told me that the currnet version is not good enough in terms of stability. wm 6 sms mode. we cannot directly sms name where it is put under contact "assistant" . we can only choose the phone no under "mobile phone". I wonder if WM6.1 can let us write the name directly in the sms if we type the "assistant" name? The official WM 6.1 released by the SAMSUNG FMG here is still on the version PDXHI2 (this version is older than the PDXHL2) and the HI2 ROM is also pretty stable when I used it last time. The only problem I've got with the HI2 ROM is that it's not able to view Chinese character. HL2 ROM released has fixed this issue. On your question contact 'assistant', may I know what are you referring to? Are you referring to when you create a new SMS, you want to type the name in the 'To' column and a list of matched name from your contact list pop up. If you're referring to this, then HL2 ROM have no issue on this and I remembered that HI2 ROM is also okay with this function. |

L2 ROM has only one bugs, i.e. wake-up from sleep mode will auto-connect to WiFi. The rest is working fine.

remember ur second battery included in the box...? Use it...
The unit will consume a lot of power when in GPS mode. So, get a car charger if u use GPS... The unit will consume a lot of power when in WiFi mode. So, use WiFi when no 3G coverage...if no 3G, cannot help... |

QUOTE(-ahtiang- @ Feb 1 2009, 11:08 AM) Quite disappoint with Samsung Melaka Technician. When I told him it was not upgradable through Samsung Website, he ask me to surf internet myself to upgrade to WM6.1.I wonder if upgraded to wM6.1, how is the battery life? My concern is to solve the problems: 1. connected to wifi when MSN, current version keeps activating GPRS or 3G, 2. like a member said. WM6.1 shuld solve the problem if I wanted to sms a person whose name is stored under assistant. This post has been edited by fhfoomelaka: Feb 15 2009, 12:08 PM |

Hi all,
I have a problem with my i780 after upgraded to "The original and offical full PDXHL2 package (EBOOT/PHONE/PDA). The battery drain off within 12 hours even with my spare battery. My phone was warm all the time even I didn't open any application. I suspect it was something wrong with the new ROM. So I flash it back to old ROM cooked by EFN (128dpi Ultimate) the problem still persists. The phone was fully charged not even 2 hour my battery left about 70% now. Should I send for warranty? I afraid samsung distributor will void my warranty. Appreciate if someone could help me on this. Thanks!!! |

Hi dgtel2,I do read your posts sharing your experience at ppcsg and xda-developers besides here and I believed you are the right person to ask the following questions. I am new to ROM flashing and currently very 'itchy' to try the latest version for my i780 WM 6.0. Before that, really appreciate if you could clear some of my doubts: 1. My current version is i780DXHD1. If there is something happened half way and I want to revert back to this original ROM, is it still possible and where to find and how to do it? 2. Can I backup my whole system by using program such as sprite backup and after flashed, restore back using sprite also so that I have exactly the same settings, except the updated ROM? To reinstall everything might really frighten me off :-) 3. There are 2 methods that I am considering, first is using the upgrader.exe link posted earlier and the second one would be mascian's eXtreme 96 DPI 16 Mb Page Pool (.bin file which I have yet to figure out how to apply), with the latter being my preferred choice. Do you think this is a good choice? 4. Finally to me the most important programs are Pocket Informant 8 and Garmin. (Thanks to the helpful ppl here). If the answer for my second question is not possible, is there any easy way out to keep these 2 programs intact after flash? Thank you very much in advance. |

QUOTE(XXQQ @ Feb 20 2009, 01:14 AM) Hi dgtel2, 1. "Something" happened halfway could brick ur unit. So, go update to Samsung Service Centre. One in PJ (near Avon Federal Highway). The other is in the Summit USJ. But of u're not from Klang Valley region, u need to hunt around for the authorised Samsung Service Centre. There are stock ROM available in the XDA Dev forum. You need to hunt them. Once you have succesfully upgraded to newer ROM, you will not be able to revert back to olf ROM unless u have the ROM and Mirage Updater in your hands. I even face a problem with cooked ROM, and I can always revert back to official ROM without negative effects to my unit. So do at your own risk. I really recommend you to go to authorised Samsung Service Centre for ROM upgrading.I do read your posts sharing your experience at ppcsg and xda-developers besides here and I believed you are the right person to ask the following questions. I am new to ROM flashing and currently very 'itchy' to try the latest version for my i780 WM 6.0. Before that, really appreciate if you could clear some of my doubts: 1. If the answer for my second question is not possible, is there any easy way out to keep these 2 programs intact after flash? Thank you very much in advance. 2. Once flashed, you will loose everything. Sprite Backup may not 100% recover your settings and applications, thus, making ur unit unstable. I always reinstall all my fav. apps. all over again. 3. I would suggest u try the official .exe upgrader (DXHL2 ROM). Personally, I hate the 96DPI ROM. It makes the fonts smaller and not touch finger-friendly. 96DPI adopting RealVGA app which tends to make ur unit become unstable (after some time) and incompatible with certain software. 4. Nope. Any settings or software will be deleted after flashed. Even if u install Garmin in the SD Card location, u will still need to create the link manually to ensure launching from start menu. I am getting addicted flashing my unit regularly. Some of the cooked ROM is reliable and some are not. It's kind of my hobby now to hunt for the best ROM for i780 (ASEAN version). Of course I always keep my stock ROM in case anything happen to it. So, flash at your own risk. If you have backup handset, flashing is fun. Anything happen, dump ur SIM to backup phone. |

Yes I agree about there are other firmware then i780PDXHL2 which is already publish unofficially, but I still prefer to use the official firmware upgrade from Samsung Website.
This is other website to upgrade the i780 firmware with version i780PDAXHL2 (WM6.1) About the battery, after upgrade the firmware, when I choose only use GPRS/EDGE, with internet connection always on continue, my i780 can use from 07.00 in the morning untill 23.00 at night, it mean about 16 hours more, and the battery level still 15% charge. QUOTE(Masculine @ May 16 2009, 07:33 AM) I think the battery is weakening as it is getting "dried" or "old". As for my unit, I don't feel the battery is drying too fast even if I upgraded to the IB1 ROM.Although TCPMP is free, I still prefer CorePlayer which is having release 1.3.2 as the latest version. Give it a try and you'll love the YouTube plug-in in CorePlayer. |

Hi all, have 1 question here. Does the micro sd sdhc class speed really matter for Samsung i780 here? I "accidentally" bought a Sandisk class 2 micro sd card and now really would like to know if the class 4 or 6 would give better performance in term of GPS navigation like Garmin software which installed in the micro sd...

I'm not sure of the i780 price right now because the RM 999 is valid til May 31 according to the promotional price by FMG advertised on local (Malaysia) newspaper. I checked it out and found that it's true but some places which sell samsung hp did not sell that model.

coz it's not stated in the advertisement.. standard package of i780 does come with 2 batteries, so not considered "free another battery" la.. |

I am using version DHX1 now, always my friend complain cannot reach me. Until I apply another phone line and activate the "forward" function in my i780 to this new no, then I realise sometimes my call will forward to this new no. I guess the reception of this phone or at least this OS version is not stable, other than that everything is fine, only the camera mode a bit 'slow'.
using Garmin Map provided by mfm seems to be better and more interesting, the icon looks more charming. QUOTE(terryfoo @ Jun 9 2009, 03:42 PM) I didn't buy, got it as complimentary gift. but i saw the promotion price at digital mall, rm999.00 only. everything is there in the box. i saw it when i was going for a screen protector and capcase cover.i had been using pda since the day it exist. ranging from 2k-3k i had spent on every models such as dopod, htc and so on. i find this samsung i780 is ridiculous. it has speed and not laggish (better than my old 838pro), good battery performance (mine lasted 3 day with normal usage, this pda had been with me for 4 days). the internal memory is huge enuff for my program. i like the human interface it came with, the mouse pad rock my world, but i am a bit dissapointed with the gps, i need to use port splitter in order to get the mapking works. anyway, since 4 days ago, the pda serve me well on my business routine, downloading emails every 2 hours, surfing web (30 minutes perday), listen to music while doing my work (1 hour), also serve as my portable modem....the battery last nearly 3.5days. the keyboard rocks! |

if u hate port splitter, go for Garmin. Works seamlessly with the built-in GPS receiver.

guys, i have problems..
After installing realVGA, i have disabled phone skin (ticked to disable). But still I cannot make any video call. Tested with another phone side by side earlier and it seems to have 'CONNECTED' (i can see myself on the camera displayed) but the other party camera just shows the spinning image (loading or something) - the other party phone shows 'CONNECTING' and displays a blank video. IF i enable phone skin, then the other party can video call me, but I can't. Any solution? |

L7Awesome, price still range from RM900 - RM999
Be nice to seller and ask for freebies - screen protector / casing / bigger memory card, etcs. Oh yeah I had some app's running on my i780, and also some realvga review which might help. You guys can head over to my blog by clicking the link on my siggy below |

Well, you might say screen is smaller, but when compared to my Dopod d810 (which have no physical keyboard), it's just an inch shorter! Although it's smaller in size (a tiny bit), but it packs more resolution than the normal 320 x 240. You will love the 600Mhz processor as well |

Realised that my i780 (version DXHJ1) got problem with Maxis if chose band as automatic or WCDMA (3G). Signal is weak & can't make/receive calls, send/receive MMS & connect to internet. It is all ok if I select GSM.
No problem when I use the same sim card with 3G selected on my other phone (Nokia E71). Strong signal in the same area. Did another test with using Celcom 3G on my i780 - flawless without any problems. All tests were conducted at the same location. My 90% conclusion cause of problem is that Samsung i780 has problem with Maxis 3G. Anyone else can confirm this before I opt to upgrade the firmware to the latest version? |

i don't see any harm if u upgrade to the latest IB1 ROM. You can do it urself. Ensure to do proper backup of all ur data. Once flash to new ROM, everything is gone just like when you purchase the i780 way back the first day.

Can I ask how much is this phone going for right now? The other day I saw it was going for RM1099. I thought it's RM999. Also, what do the box contains (in KL)?

Just ensure you get 2 ORIGINAL Samsung batteries in the box. If not, then it's not the standard package.

mapking 2007 works OK but the screen mat not suitable for mapking 2007. mapking is too old already. better use Garmin MXT or iGo8.
But be prepare to have your spare battery in hand as if you use the GPS, in one hour you will loose 50% battery power already. |

not sure bout tis.. but i780 is considered quite a rare phone here.. mayb not popular so the shop dun wanna bring in stock.. nevertheless, proud to be its owner.. I can confirm this phone is really a rare breed in KL at least. I have been hunting for an extra battery in a few shopping malls but to no avail. They do not carry even the generic battery like Momax brand! I ask the shop keeper why is that and they said people looking for i780 accessories is really rare. Nevertheless, i find that this phone functions are perfect for my use. Maybe ppl really go for style instead... i guess. Added on September 28, 2009, 10:12 am
If googled, yes. It's been discontinued.
It's sad that they discountinued this awesome phone. Oh well, i guess all good things must come to an end. Anyway, can I check if you know where i can get an extra battery and the desktop charger? Added on September 28, 2009, 10:17 am
thanks for reply. i still can put any software yet. usb port problem really giv me headache i'll try tomorrow at office. hope it works.
I think the very basic stuffs that you need to make sure is (from my upgrading experience)... 1. I have a lot of problem with Vista. XP works perfect 2. Under USB to PC, uncheck the "Ena adv network func". That's my over generalized problem solving that I have :-p. Also remember to backup! I use PPCPimBackup... it's a freeware, Google for it :-).
