What is Gunpla?

Gundam Models refers to plastic and non-plastic model kits depicting the mechas, vehicles and characters of the fictional Mobile Suit Gundam universe. These kits have become popular among anime fans and model-lovers, especially in Japan and in other nearby Asian countries since 1980s. The popularity of Gundam models increased in the 1990s with North America and Europe being exposed to Gundam through television, video and manga. These Gundam Models may also be called Gunpla (ガンプラ Ganpura?), a portmanteau of "Gundam plastic model". "Gunpla" more commonly refers to the practice of building Gundam models, rather than the models themselves.

After 4 hours of applying water decal last night, I feel like there's a difference in quality between them. The one supplied with my macross kit (especially vf27) were really hard to applied nicely, but the one for nu, is relatively easy.

BTW, anyone knows where to get water slide decal for RG SF? and how much?

slightly different sword, beam sabers on the back of the shoulders (slightly different shoulder armor) and different back skirt to accomodate beam sabers
that's the only differences i can remember with Exia R2.. i would've preferred they do a normal release.. it would be nice to have, but definitely not worth the premium you pay for P-Bandai

waterslides degrade over time
probably your macross kit is old batch, while Nu only released for a year

just buy waterslides online, either from local or japan also can, since postage very cheap for 'paper' laugh.gif

Hee hee see the stand I bought for my Sazabi, color looks ok?

Attached Image

Attached Image

Anyway, for those who think about a stand for Sazabi, the standard 1/100 action stand DOES NOT hold Sazaabi well, Sazabi is too heavy for it. The whole kit will lean forward should you put the main support stick in the usual position, like this:

doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif
Attached Image

I have no choice but move the main support stick to the very edge of the stand in order to stable it... sweat.gif

I've done mine by numbers, so I just cut them out bit by bit from no 1, until only the Bandai logo left.. tongue.gif

After completing this kit, I realized why people suggest this as one of a must have kit.

Haha, right. It's really stressful process, takes much longer time (for me) than building. I also found out turning off fan and using air conditioner makes it easier, because no wind to blow the decal causing it to flip/fold, and cool breeze can also reduce stress level. Also, doing it while watching tv helps you to do it slowly, no rush.

But getting an AB will encourage more kit to be bought and built...and the vicious cycle will keep continuing... sweat.gif laugh.gif

BTW, I just realized that Sazabi ver Ka has different shade of red, and I already bought sazabi red spray can. Should I spray every red part with it or just one of the 'shade'? Don't want to buy any more red spray...

very rarely u c ppl actually do it. Too much of a PITA and the final results no matter how good is drown out by the actual kit itself if u place it side by side due to size differences, meaning most of ur effort gone to waste since its so small that no1 would actually take notice unless u point it out or take really close up shots. Too much of a bother imho.

Just painted this guy for the MG Geara Doga

Details were painted using a 00-brush with a sharp tip. For such small figures you need a palette to thin/mix your paints, 'cause you need to try out the right thickness: Color to thin=mini will be flooded, to thick=details get lost. Also make sure there's not a blob of paint on the brush before applying by whiping it over paper e.g.

Last step is one or two washes with diluted black enamel (after a thin layer of varnish) to bring out the detail, then carefull clean-up with a cotton-bud (just like panel-lining with Zippo)

Awesome nod.gif I wish there is good guide on the Net on painting the figure.

On another note, I'm sold on the RG Exia, it's nice to see them breaking away from the current B frame (as speculated and visually evident by the prototype image biggrin.gif)

My experience with sharpie, only the metallic sharpie (gold, silver and bronze) sticks, however they do not stick really well to the new PS frame.

Avoid normal sharpie to paint on the armor, it will be terrible.

On the other hand, I paint my 3.0 transparent head visor with normal red sharpie, it illuminates really well when the LED is on thumbup.gif

I've used sharpie for minor painting before, and it stick well. Just that for large area, not as even as gundam marker because of the tip shape.

its an old transformable kit, old and transform dont mix well. Heck some newer MG that can transform dont even go together that well let alone an old design. Sure its not the worse of its kind, but its among the worse thats for sure.

if u just let it stand there then sure it look ok, but other then that its meh.

its a very old kit, technology in it is crude, transformation is clunky, mobility is close to non existence, proportion is off, and it doesnt even have a full inner frame. Action base is out of the question since this was made before Bandai introduces action base (i dont know if the generic base connector will even work but even if it does it wont be very good). In addition, because of this the G-Fortress mode is forever grounded, rendering it pretty much pointless since u cant put it up into the air as it is intended to be.

if u r a fan of its design and can accept all the above then sure go ahead and try it, at the very least u'll gain some experience building an old kit. However its not an amazing build experience and the outcome may be a let down to some.

noted!
wont be getting it then .. looks like a very experimental model kit ... not a full inner frame means limited articulations ..
there are few old mg kit that i like before, but never bought any .. only look outside the display cabinet at toy shops just to be amazed ..
one that was on my wishlist ; mg gundam physalis ..

thats an even bigger turd.

no full inner frame, bad seam lines, sticker for color separation, weight issue, limited articulation, horrible hand design, ridiculously unwieldy shield, bad nub marks, confusing manual, bad proportion.

stay away from it.

suggest use the actual gundam blue spray itself for more striking blue. I tried use some tamiya blue before but ended up very dull looking blue.

spend yourself a sandpaper & polishing compound and do this

QUOTE(rayloke @ Apr 30 2012, 03:47 PM)
Ok, i think i will share a little bit with snapfit... something i just learn recently when i started doing my snapfit kits.
One of the main challenge of snapfitted kit is the task of removing nip marks, without leaving any visible leftover mark. This is especially challenging when doing colored parts; especially blue n red, n other darker colors. One can sand under the nip mark is flat, but is during the cutting process, any damage on the plastic will leave a white spot on the plastic which is almost impossible to remove 100%. So be very careful!
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Part on the runner.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Cut it from the runner with a side cutter. Remember to leave some extra nip. This is because no matter how sharp your side cutter is, the cutting action somehow will have some force pressing onto the plastic. This will, especially parts with darker color like red n blue n grey, The force might damage the plastic n leave white spot.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Then, use a sharp knife to slowly "slice" the nip, bit by bit. With this, no pressure will be put onto the plastic. When the nip mark is short enough, mebbe 0.5mm, we can start doing sanding.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

My personal habit is start with a file. This is sometimes dangerous because file can be very erosive n it sands down plastic very fast. As a result, if not careful, u might just over sand the whole thing n leave some very deep scratch mark onto the plastic. Here, i file it down until it's almost near the part. u can still see the shape of the nip. notice the white or light color around the nip? this is plastic damage n turn white. but no worry, it's only skin deep n can be easily removed by sand paper.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Sand paper sanding. i start with 800, end with 1,200 grit. This is because i will be finishing with flat coat. IF u wanna do gloss coat, at least end with 2,000 grit n above. For curvy surface, i strongly recommend to use those 3M sanding sponge, the one state "microfine".

Now we can still see some scratches.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Next i use Tamiya compound Coarse (Pic below) to compound it. Actually i do not need to do this because my final finishing is flat. This is just to show an example for those who wants to do gloss or semi gloss.

Besides compound, if u think it's expensive (around RM15 one tube), u can also use nail polisher. Use the finest one, those used for last step polishing or they call it "buff" type.

Other than that, u can even use those CD recovery fluid. The liquid u use, when your DVD has fine scratches, to wipe on the CD/DVD. IT works.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

******************************************************************************************************************************

Compared to the pic above, u can see the glossiness of original Bandai plastic. After compound, it's much glossier, something like those HD version.

i always use cutter to cut and trim nubs .. tried filer and sandpaper before, wont try that again because it leaves nasty scratch marks .. unless you are doing airbrushing, better dont do any scrubbing .. haha..

take your time, dont rush things .. sometime it took me 2hours just to finished the ankle parts, nubs clear and panel lined ..

The turn A wings actually don't look too bad but for 1700 yen is too expensive for two pieces of plastic.

The Norn's clear yellow looks ok, so far they don't seem to be overwhelmed by the dark blue armour. But the extra fins on the backpack seem like they'll be puke yellow. Hopefully not another sticker fest like the Unicorn mode Norn.

Water decal are quite easy, but requires a lot of patience. Using setter and softener also helps. If not mistaken, Top coat is a must to protect the decal.

I suppose cannot expect u to check thru all the previous pages of this thread also.. just that.. seems like every other day someone will ask panel line or top coat first and it's getting quite boring

In any case.. top coat is pretty much to protect ur kit so might as well do panel lining and decalling first and coat last

because, there's the minimum way and the maximum way
what you saw may be the pros or people with lots of patience
they spray a layer of top coat first, then panel line, lastly another layer of top coat

some does this: base paint -> primary colour -> secondary colour -> top coat -> panel line -> top coat -> decals -> topcoat
this is the maximum way

while the minimum way: colour -> panel line -> decals -> topcoat

whichever way is fine, but the main point is all the last step ends with topcoat

IMO, sometimes, it good to experiment with different method to find which is preferable to you. I do decal 1st before panel lining/colour (use marker) because sometime if not careful, the setter/softener liquid can cause smudge to the lining/colour. So I decal 1st, the coat to protect the decal, then only lining/colour.

it depends on your techniques
I guess you applied too much setter/softer hence the lining ink can run
most do lining first because if you applied decals already, trying to rub away excess ink would risk damaging the decals
some uses panel line wash technique, which requires thinner or zippo fluid to wipe away the excess ink, this will damage the decals

I'm not a careful type, so most of the time, will have excess setter/softener because I don't have a steady hand to wipe off the excess liquid. When I tried to do it, I usually accidentally moved the decal... laugh.gif BTW, wiping excess lining off a coated surface is really easy. nod.gif

Guys, usually how many bottles of paint do you use for an MG? I found myself using 4 clear reds for my Sinanju and others for metallics and inner frames... The guy at the shop told me, actually for an MG; I only require one bottle of clear red?

1 bottle flat red + leveling thinner is enough. 1 or 2 layer is good, bcos the existing plastic is red color.

designing and maintaining a brand new mold is expensive. In the case of redesign (beargguy), Bandai will reuse existing molds to create runners that it is base upon (acguy) to cut cost. As such, there will be some excess parts not use in the said model kit.

just think of it as some bonus parts, keep it as future potential customization parts or replacement parts or testing parts or u can just throw it away if u wan.

designing and maintaining a brand new mold is expensive.

My 2 cents. Perhaps some paint chips effect would make it more realistic. What I usually do is use a silver type paint or marker and dab it on the edges

Ops, it is MG. Forgot that Nu is relatively bigger from other MG.

Hi, I kinda need help from the sifus here. So I tried using a filer to sand off the nubs but after finishing it with 1000 grit and 1500 grit sandpaper, I still couldn't make it as shiny as it was. Here are some samples:

if you don't plan to paint it, there's one way to minimize it (sorry, 'minimize' only)

After you had sand it to very fine, use gundam marker (red of course) and apply a little bit on the filing area. Then immediately use your thumbs to rub it off. You may repeat this step until it looks OK to your eyes.

At the same time, let's hope other sifus here share their experience thumbup.gif

there's higher grit sandpaper, with the highest #2000
after that use tamiya compound or similar hobby use polishing compound, usually 3 types, coarse, fine, finish
to end up a surface as shiny as a new car, you need to use coarse -> fine -> finish

I advice against using car polishing compound, it may deteriorate the plastic

final advice, in the second photo, you don't need to worry about nub marks, as the area will covered in the torso after finish assembling

hehehe if the part was hidden when assemble like in your picture, (the one with pegs) no need to work hard, it was hidden....
but for nubmark at the side torso, try higher grit of sandpaper.. and yes, compound too

but i just simply dab same color marker (sharpie marker) for scratches/or whited nubmark.. hahahhahaa

Is it file->1000grit->1200grit?

For me, I would do file, 800grit->1000grit->1200grit->2500grit/used sandpaper->compound.
Try this out, I learnt this from an senior which have 15+ years of experience in plastic model.
You have to slowly increase the grit for sanding, not from after file, with rough surface straight jump to 1000grit, it will only waste your sandpaper.
Cheers smile.gif

Hahaha after 1200 actually can apply compound already, most important is earlier step when the surface still rough, you have to slowly increase grit. With flat top coat, it will be fine. smile.gif
If you want finer touch then end with 1500, 2000, or 2500 grit.
What I did is what I told you earlier file->800->1000->1200->used sandpaper.
Trust me bro, I learnt from ah pek from ICW. No harm to try smile.gif

Damn I don't have 800 grit sandpaper so I used a 600 grit one instead, but sadly scratch marks still there. Is it because I sand it too hard?

it helps to wet sand so that the sanded particles will not damage. then dont push hard while sanding as well.

using multiple sandpaper is good as well, going from smaller grit to higher one.

afaik, 600 grit is noticeable but maybe after flat coat, it will be less noticeable.

#600 or #800 doesn't make much difference, most important is the step up in grit
either #600 or #800, the next one you use #1000 or #1200, then next #1500

Finished building the MG Gundam X.

Simple, clean and satisfactory for a kit at that price.

The flaw is, its very back heavy. The backpack ala Satellite Cannon is heavy undeployed. That makes the waist keep on slanting back. Those who has the OO Raiser will know what I mean. Not sure why Bandai didn't include the black clip like the Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice has. But this problem can be solved using the backpack stand adapter. The crotch one is quite loose.

Overall good kit and very nice to pose with. Will post pictures of it later.

extremely underrated. One of the best kit of 2011

pros: Very solid for a transformable kit, good articulation, wing sliding gimmick, extremely articulated whip leading to many posing possibilities, unique beam saber (and glow under black light too just like unicorn psycho frame), easy transformation

cons: Lots of bad nubs, back heavy (however when fully extended the tip will reach the ground), out of the box the whip while articulated cant really stay in position (can be easily fix with a layer of paint/top coat)

@carpathia, @TheAdmiral,

Racun racun!

Ok... I was thinking to go easy with Epyon, means simply do some metallic color + matt black mix, instead of crazy shading work on it... sad.gif

The black looks painted. Probably will still be dark blue, and hopefully the backpack fins will not be another gold sticker-fest.

Can anybody explain to me what is 'g-system'? Where is it made? and is it licensed by Bandai? I know they make some different versions of the kits available or even unavailable ones...

G System: one of many 3rd party resin kit maker

made in: hong kong

licensed by Bandai: no, the only resin maker authorize by Bandai is B-Club (they r a Bandai's subsidiary so thats a given)

price: extremely expensive since its not mass produce in the same scale as Bandai.

packaging: each parts come in its own plastic bag, there is no runners since each parts is individually casted

quality: great for a resin kit but cant compare with Bandai. Expect flashes, warping, imperfection etc all common problems associated with resin, the only thing is it has less problem then most other resin maker.

u need to thin it, paints straight out of bottle is too thick.

however in ur case, u have acrylic mr hobby aqueous. U hav the option to thin it with water rather then thinner (not recommended but still an option nonetheless).

Hey everyone,

Just got a Nu ver. ka and I'm now thinking of spray painting the inner frame to a silver metallic color. I've read somewhere that gun metal works well with inner frame coloring but have not seen the color in person. Any thoughts or suggestions on this? Thanks~

yes the drying will be slow, it tends to get a little runny and the ratio is also abit hard to get right. Its more suited for hand painting then ab, but so long as u get that milky consistency u can spray it out of ab no problem. Again while worked its not recommended, just think of it as cheapo alternatives or last resort in case u suddenly run out of thinner midway through ur painting.

im a cheapskate so i use normal boxcutter knife, these days i dun even bother sanding anymore. I just cut the remaining nub with the blade, careful though, abit hard to control as you might dig in too much with the blade and accidently chip off too much from the nub

I think if you are into painting, you just have to worry about leveling the nub marks. The plastics quality is good enough that it does not require priming or sanding anymore biggrin.gif Of course, if you are chasing the perfection, you can always do that.

Try starting with 600 and all the way until 2000.

Mega Size RX-78 is 37.5cm, which barely fit (though if you make it stand straight the head will almost touch the cube's ceiling). Maybe need to make some action pose to reduce the height

No. The old detolf sku is being phased out, new sku is replacing it. The new sku is still called detolf but with different product id, to avoid confusion with 2 product with the same name with different id, ikea pull out the old detolf from shelf and labeled as "sold out" or no longer being listed by ikea pending the arrival of new detolf. The new detolf is the same as the old, just with different product id and different packaging. New detolf is being replace all around the world since beginning of January.

It came in 2 boxes now instead of 1, no idea what is in which box though. This is to distribute weight around so that its not so bloody heavy like the old everything in 1 box packaging. Not sure if u could buy each boxes separately though.

Other then that everything the same, as far as i know.

i have assembled it but not yet on the painting or top coating part

but if i have to do it, ill just remove the parts from the gold chrome parts and top coat the individual piece. after drying, assemble as is. reason? I am not sure if i can easily cover/mask all those little parts very well and i think it will also be faster that way.

Its quite troublesome to take out the armor for matte top coat. I'm planning to mask the gold part only. But now trying to find water slide decal for it first.

Apply flat coat on armors separately, but how about the panel lines and decals? Some decals will run through multiple pieces of armor.

You're gonna have a very hard time to mask the frame. You're supposed to slice the decal that sticks on few pieces, like on the shoulder.

i will end up repeating what mushy said

but really, whatever works for the modeller be it. there many ways to do it and masking is one of them.

as i said, it is what i said i would do. panel lines is easy, it is actually better to panel line piece by piece since you can ink the hidden areas (but not worth the extra work for me)

for markings, if it is sticker, just grab a new blade and cut it.
for water slide decals, if it is really multiple parts, just use marking solution to dissolve it. after curing it will shrink to that intended part (some may need cutting though)

but thinking back now, the armor piece is really hard to take off so the markings might end up destroyed in the process >.<

i think most of us here will use the enamel cover up method here for the Sinanju's emblem... 1st layer brush all the parts that need gold color with ... then 2nd layer cover it with enamel black. lastly use zippo lighter fluid with cotton bud to wash off the black color of the emblem... then you'll see the result smile.gif

air brush or hand paint also can... enamel paint can mix with zippo fluid as the thinner...
actually for gold color gundam marker is not recommended since the color will oxidize very fast if no coating applied once the kit finished.
gaia star bright 122 is a good choice. smile.gif

try painting few thin layers instead of 1 thick layer
by few thin layers mean, u paint a layer, wait it dry, paint another layer, n wait again

gaia note is lacquer based and afaik, it can only be used with airbrush

for handbrushing, you can use enamel paints since it really dries and cure slowly or acrylic paints (some acrylic paints though works better with retarder since they are designed to be used with airbrush)

for acrylic though, you need to know what is the thinner or thinning solution is. Alcohol based acrylic cannot be thinned with water and vice versa. for the gundam marker, i think it is alcohol based since it really dries quickly.

me whistling.gif still sticking to the basics, even with quite a sizable collection
but mainly because i only enjoy the build and i don't have much cash for paints.. now it may change though since new job, and i might find myself getting paints and being more daring in kit bashing since money is not such a big issue as compared to before tongue.gif

but mainly because i only enjoy the build and i don't have much cash for paints.. now it may change though since new job, and i might find myself getting paints and being more daring in kit bashing since money is not such a big issue as compared to before tongue.gif

Mega Size RX-78 is 37.5cm, which barely fit (though if you make it stand straight the head will almost touch the cube's ceiling). Maybe need to make some action pose to reduce the height

poslaju is faster.. send today tmrw receive ..
shipping cost calculated by weight.. but if box over 30cm, then will measure dimension.. then it will be more expensive..

domestic parcel is trackable as well.. difference is, delivery period around 4-5 days ..
cheaper and they wont measure .. sweat.gif

gaia note is lacquer based and afaik, it can only be used with airbrush

for handbrushing, you can use enamel paints since it really dries and cure slowly or acrylic paints (some acrylic paints though works better with retarder since they are designed to be used with airbrush)

for acrylic though, you need to know what is the thinner or thinning solution is. Alcohol based acrylic cannot be thinned with water and vice versa. for the gundam marker, i think it is alcohol based since it really dries quickly.
*
so technically the paints i have is wrong? so now i need to go get another set of enamel paints?
mine doesnt cure slowly as per the seller says

i got issues remember which and which solution is suppose to be mixed together and which thinner can wash what away rclxub.gif

Zaku F2 from 0083 Federation used at Australia
but why Silver Bullet in list?

technically Silver Bullet is Neo Zeon one since it just Doben Wolf recaptured in Unicorn manga

if Silver Bullet in list,
Zaku F2 white should in list too

At least the Silver Bullet was modified enough to warrant new name and code, while Zaku F2 captured by EFSF only change color.

Anksha in list, more like Neo Zeon mobile suit but it is build from scratch for Federation so it deserve in list

i used to have justice' backpack wings touching the ground to provide additional support.. but i changed it as i was afraid i might warp the wings overtime
now i'm using the provided "stand" (the black stick) to hold up the backpack in deployed mode.. i have to change that when i get more RGs to put in the shelf though doh.gif

3800 YEN translate directly to RM122 (according to xe.com ) so, i was thought most resellers will increase a little to cover shipping/tax/margin cost

Actually most importers does not get the (standard releases) stuff at SRP. Usually cheaper. I guess if you want to measure how much margin they put, try looking at the P-Bandai stuff they are bringing in.

No. The item says 3800 yen but that is SRP for consumers aka u and me, retailers buy at different rate + further discount due to bulk orders. How much it actually cost to the retailers per item depends on their negotiation skills or relation with distributor and r hence private and confidential.

But u can imagine its pretty cheap per item since they could sell each at roughly SRP (some even slightly lower then SRP) but still manage to keep the business afloat while paying utility bills, shipping, storage, salary + profit. If u c those charging much higher then SRP, it means they r either a bad negotiator or r targeting higher pure profit margin out of ur pocket.

In summary, if u c sellers trying to sell u a kit higher then SRP (higher by about 15bucks) u should try to avoid. Of course this only applies to normal releases.

Thanks for the info but most retailers here sell a little above Japan SRP right?

Slightly above by 2/3/5 bucks those r fine. But there r sellers that r ridiculous so just keep an eye out and avoid them if u can.

Japan has stiffer competition hence the cheap price. Buying in SRP in Japan is actually overprice since u can easily find stuff below SRP.

Show the cashier ur passport n u get 5% consumption tax discount, of course only apply to certain shops. Yodobashi sell at bellow SRP, show them ur passport n u get further 5% discount.

Infact even if some shops dont hav that discount, there r plenty of shops that give special sales price. Sinanju ver ka at 50% off is 1 i remembered, and that was 2 month after it was release.

can't be MY currency weakness.. it's definitely just good ol' scalping cos no other shops have it?
because if it's 85 then the conversion rate is pretty much 0.047, and that is crazy.. do NOT support these ppl sweat.gif be patient and i'm sure other shops will restock

anyway, MG X completed! pending decals.. capturing the photo with flash really brings out the satellite panels tongue.gif this is just one of the most beautiful units i have ever seen.. they're using the newer ABS that is easier to clean and cut (just like Nu ver ka)... overall it's very light and solid

Damn i've completely forgotten about that one! Perfect timing too.. i could really use those for a custom i'm cooking up tongue.gif
Anyway i feel the MG is too expensive for my taste.. plus i'm quite bored of MG astrays.. HG should do just fine for what i'm planning.. heheh.. and needs less space to display

If I were to collect Build Fighter series, it definitely will be the HG, because more models, smaller and cheaper nod.gif . But hopefully no, because it will tear a big hole in my pocket... doh.gif

Where is the best place to buy gundam in Singapore?

Unless you're staying in Singapore, I would recommend buying in Malaysia, due to RM dropping; after conversion is really not worth it

Hobby Art sometimes do provide discounts, IF you're a regular. I also heard that they provide membership, how much discount they gave to members, I'm not sure...

Anyway, I was out window shopping yesterday when I came upon those decals, I really want them and I don't wanna spend more time and transportation fees to look for cheaper ones.
They are also giving 25% discount on Bandai items, maybe I'll drop by again tomorrow....

So, the GN Sword is not chrome plated.. then that means 2700¥ will be the standard price for regular RG then.. sad.gif
Yes, the Bandai Premium is for parts for the Exia Repair only.
