According to Chinese site, Y580 has abnormal high HDD temperature due to thermal design problem where hardisk is located between the heat source CPU & GPU
HDD idle temp around 47C, it reached 63C during Furmark & Prime95 stress test.

If you place a new SSD in the HDD location and relocated HDD to DVD location and doing the above stress test
CPU & GPU at 91C, SSD at 47C and HDD temp down to 43C

According to notebookcheck's review on the N56 (Nvidia GT630M), the unit seemed to be rather hot as well...
In terms of bang for buck, the Lenovo would be better. You can still use the remaining money to opt for Lenovo's on-site warranty support

The situation on the Y580 is more or less similar to what I've been encountering on my M14x (apart from the high GPU temps, but its a GTX card, so its unsurprising). I guess that the temps can be controlled by switching to SSD entirely, and also disabling turboboost on the i7 processor, that should reduce the CPU to around 80C or so

Y580 is very tempting with attractive price.
Just wonder how the engineer design it and placed the HDD between the heat source CPU & GPU.
Very worry about the HDD high temperature as it exceeded the maximum operating temperature. Scare it will dead anytime.

According to Notebookcheck stress test on DV6 with Furmark & Prime95. The HDD temperature only max at 38C but Y580 reached 63C.

Added on June 18, 2012, 10:41 pmBF3 get G55 better. I heard G55 also have heat issues. The paste btw the heatsink and processor surface are not contact properly. After one of the user repaste it. The temp from 85+ dropped to 60+. Very good cooling system G55 had.

The cooler sure help, better open the back cover when gaming. You can also relocate the HDD to the DVD drive as its cooler there.

a member in the G series thread posted in the rog forums to ask about this. Why is one the exhaust vent was partially closed?

apparently it was to prevent all the heat from going to the battery.

hahaha...does this double fans really matters that much in terms of practicality?? two fans running means empty your battery faster , and the laptop size has to be blown up to accommodate another fan, the notebook will be heavier too due to the extra metal fittings...oh yah, the company are going to bump up the price to a million ringgit too if they have this extra feature.....and wht's more surprizing ,the extra fan u have there is useless unless you are gaming~~

laptop with high-end graphics card not meant for gaming or normal usage in battery mode. single or dual fan doesn't matter much. it's all about ventilation design and heat dissipation. in fact, that's the characteristics of gaming laptop. It meant to be heavy.

i use lappy with dual fan and both spinning either in idle or gaming.

The picture cooling system are but the price, battery life, thickness and weight are

When we compromise on cost, performance, weight & battery life, we get Y580.

Best compromise for mobility and performance is the new Macbook Pro.

i don't put in battery as I mostly use adapter. if i travel a lot outside, just use tablet or netbook. gaming laptop put at home.

i bet you can have better experience with desktop setup

yup, but i can't stand the power consumption as I operates the system 24/7 (download stuffs)
so i switch laptop and the electricity bill somewhat reduced

The Acer TimelineX 3820TG with AMD HD5650M comes with a dual fan configuration. It worked like a charm, and it was almost a perfect laptop.
Then comes the successor TimelineX 3830Tg with GT540M, where Acer decided to removed one of the fans, it ended up suffering from severe CPU and GPU throttling.. because of that, we don't even recommend that laptop in this forum regardless of how awesome the 3820Tg was

the problem is not simply, 'where' the fan is. They are cramping heaving duty card in tight chassis, without sufficient airflow.

I am using GE60 with GTX 660M... However i dont feel any discomfort cause by heat after playing any graphically intensive game such as MW3 and BF3 after an extended period of time (>1 hour) especially if i use the turbo mode for the fan...even the part part around the keyboard and palmrest near the hdd isnt really too hot after that...

not sure about gtx660m, perhaps they hada fix? but it is positive for quite some users with the gt650m


keep on using though, and MW3 is not graphically intensive for a gtx660m. what reso are you using for BF3?

CPU or GPU will be throttled before the components fried.
Full copper heat sink are but need DIY on HDD temp.

G55VW cooling are but under stress test with Furmark & Prime95, CPU at 95C, GTX660M at 77C.
CPU also above 90C like Y580.

Under extreme stress test with Furmark, Prime95 & stress HDD with AIDA64, Chinese site manage to bring down the HDD temp from 63C to 43C by swapping HDD.
This is an unnatural level of stress that is almost never achieved under normal circumstances (including heavy gaming)

for the price lenovo is asking ... this is a value buy already
im using an old acer 4935G， idle arnd 70'c, under full load already 92~3'c
it still last me for 3 years without any problem, never changed the thermal paste or anything
just vacuum the opening and fan sometimes....

DV6's cooling are good , G55's cooling are good, dual fan's cooling are good
but value wise..i'll still choose the y580

Throttling mean huge FPS drop in game.

There are few factors u need to consider before u comparing result from the chinese website like ambient temperature and proc. They use 35w Core i5 and Malaysian model use 45w Core i7.

Yeah the price is quite a bargain. If i'm still a heavy gamer i probably will get one too.

brace for heat. the Dv6-7k is well complaint over due to heat produced by the gddr5 choice.

Desktop no heat issues.

some nice feature for DV6-7038tx there....
full HD, anti glare, GT650 (yeah, even without OC the performance is not that far apart),quad speaker+woofer

hope its price will be competitive enough ...y580's specs and price makes every other brands seems overprice

i always play on 1080p...if possible i play all games on high setting if not ultra...

shorter heat pipes means faster cooling??... but the design of Y580's board is buggy anyway
the HDD is like roti panggang ...TOASTED on both sides =.=

Y580 with full copper heat sink and shorter heat pipes should provide better CPU & GPU cooling than N56.
Y580's HDD located at "oven" need to swap with DVD for better cooling.
If gaming for long hour, open back cover blow with cooler for super cooling.

hmmm...but this will mean void warranty the moment you got your laptop~

CPU max at 97C, CPU throttle to 1.2Ghz
From HWiNFO64, its seem GPU also throttle to 350Mhz


Look like i7-3610QM really produce a lot of heat and i5 should be better.

Just swap DVD with HDD when warranty claim, its still cover.

i have no idea.. for game like Starcraft 2/Skyrim which benefit more on CPU clock, the i5 will perform pretty good i guess.

According to the researcher, a simple solution to reduce the HDD heat is to wrap the HDD with heat insulator. Its like wrapping the chicken in the oven, is it effective???

Imo, they will only change the layout may be next year for new generation Y series due to costing. The will use the heat insulator to reduce HDD temp.

iirmc, Lenovo do mention that Y480 with GT650 will come in June during their previous new product lauching.
If we compare the existing Y480 with GT640M LE, its cost 2999 with win7 and 2499 with DOS. Its highly possible they will replace the existing Y480 with the same pricing.
If we compare with new Y580 at 3399. Its seem justify for the pricing different of 900 for win7, GTX660M, extra 4GB & 500GB and blue ray.
Its also possible come with i5-3210m/GT650M(GDDR5)/DOS at 2499 Then it will direct compete with N56vz with i5/GT650(DDR3) at 2699. It may not be competative with Asus where it come with Win7, 2 yrs warranty, sufwoofer and relatively better quality and design for 200 different. But Asus warranty service is questionable

The review from Wired gave only 5 out of 10 for Y480 and it stated the performance of i7 3610 is below par. Is it solely because no SSD/7200rpm hdd (which I can overlook) or the processor in Y480 is really below par? I think it's the former right?

I am planning to get Y580 though but I have mixed feelings.
