A hamster is a rodent belonging to the subfamily Cricetinae. There are 5 types of hamsters, mainly the Syrian, Winter white dwarf, Russian campbell dwarf, Chinese hamsters and Roborovski hamsters.



SPECIES:
Syrians (Mesocricetus auratus)
They are the best known species in the pet industry. Syrians are also known as Golden Hamsters because the first domestic hamster was a wild agouti colour, which is called Golden. They have also been called Teddy Bears because does have the fuzziness and roundness of a teddy bear. Syrians are known as fancy hamsters of all the hamster species since they come in many colour varieties and also coat varieties... some can have long fur and some short fur, which we normally call Long Hairs and Short Hairs... also there are fur types like Rex and Satin.

The most important rule about Syrians is that they are SOLITARY... never house 2 together. If breeding, there is a way where you must put the female into the male's cage only when the female is on heat. It is very risky and dangerous to house 2 syrians together at any time since they are very well known to fight till death. So if you treasure the life of your hamster, never put 2 syrians together.

Syrians are large and comfortable to hold. They make suitable hamsters for the beginner keeper. Syrians that are handled properly would rarely or never bite, and can be tame to respond well to touch and voice.

Campbell's Hamster (Phodopus campbelli)
Campbells are probably the most popular of all dwarf hamsters since they come in many colour varieties that makes them attractive. The look similar to Winter White hamsters but they are actually different subspecies. So never mixbreed them.

Campbells are dwarfs... well, small hamsters. Please do not be fooled by petshops telling you they are mini hamsters and giving you a weird price and denying that they are Campbells. Anyway, they come in different colour and patterns but to breed, one must understand that hamsters that have any white spots or markings must never be bred together coz it can produce eyeless or teethless hamsters that die later... so if you were to breed, please read up.

These dwarfs may not be suitable for young children due to some dwarfs are bitey... and because of their small size, it would be harder for children to handle. Campbells are not aggressive biters, it is just that sometimes they will bite when you make them angry or startle them from their sleep.

Campbells are good in a pair or a small colony but always make sure your cage or tank has the space and enough hides and wheels to house a colony. These social hamsters are territorial and would fight off intruders that do not belong to their colony. Campbells are ok when they are introduced at a young age but letting an older hamster be kept with a younger one, most likely a fight would start.

Winter White Hamster (Phodopus sungorus)
WW are hamsters that can change their coat colour when we minimise their daylight. Their coats will change from their normal colours to a white coat but with their dorsal stripe and side arches visible. WW come in 3 colours, which are Agouti, Sapphire and Pearl. The Pearl do not change their coat colour at all, they remain in their white coat colour for life.

WW are different from Campbells, their eyes are bigger, fur is thicker, body is more bullet shape and their ears are less conspicious. It is easy to see the difference if a Campbell and WW were side by side.

WWs are nicer to handle for they have better temperments than Campbells. WW rarely change into their winter coats in captivity, so do not force your hamster to starve and stay in a cold room... this depends on the hamster whether it wants to change or not.

WW are almost similar with Campbells when it comes to pairs and colonies. Always remember, it doesn't necessary mean we should keep them in breeding pairs or male and female colonies. A single sex group is good enough for dwarf hamsters.

WW are known to fight among themselves out of the blue. Many do not understand that WW are territorial dwarfs, they can tolerate siblings or with other WW when introduced at a young age but there would always be a day where they would start fighting. Have spare cages at hand to separate fighting hamsters if you have a pair or a small colony. The best is keeping one. Do not worry, hamsters do not die from loneliness.

Roborovski Hamster (Phodopus roborovskii)
Robos are the smallest species of hamster. Adult Robos are only 2 inches in lenght. Unlike the other dwarfs, Robos do not have a dorsal stripe and they have slightly longer legs. Easy to identify from the size and also its sandy colour and white belly.

Yes, the smallest and also the fastest, this species is very well known for being very fast and active. So they are not very handle friendly since they are likely to jump or run off your palm. Many are really attracted by the facial markings, they appear to have "eyebrows".

Robos enjoy sand baths and a wheel. Due to their small size, one would need to purchase a glass/plastic tank to house them or purchase cages with small bars like the Habitrail Mini...

Robos do very well in little groups. They are the most sociable of all dwarf species and it is very entertaining to watch a small group of robos playing and eating in a tank.

Robos are not a hamster that is suitable for the beginner keeper as it could either be frustrating to have hamsters that run very fast or just unable to handle properly.

Chinese Hamster (Cricetulus griseus)
The Chinese hamster is known for their mousy looks. Yes, they were discovered in China long ago. Many people would say Chinese hamsters are hard to breed in captivity and are difficult to raise. Fighting problems occur so it is best to house them seperately. The Chinese hamster is also referred to as a "mouse-like" hamster because of its short nose, thin body, stocky legs and longer tail.

They do make great pets if they are bred by a proper breeder and have been handled often when young.

This species of hamster in Malaysia is very rare. The last known shop to have sold them were Pets Wonderland at Mid Valley years ago.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

- Most hamsters do very well alone. Roborovski hamsters can be kept in small groups and best if single sexed but Syrians, Campbells, Winter Whites and Chinese hamsters are best kept on their own. They are always happier that way.

- Never breed hamsters if you do not have the space. Hamsters can reproduce every 20 days or so.

- Hamster fights are never fun to watch.

- Always remember to have food and water available. Never give too much fresh foods as it can give diarrhea to some hamsters, especially pet shop hamsters that have never eaten any veggie before.

- The bigger the cage or tank, the more comfortable for the hamster.

- Syrians need wheels that are about 8 inches in diameter. Wodent Wheels, Sanko Wheels or Silent Spinners have 8 inch wheels.

- NEVER keep different species in 1 cage or tank together... BIG big trouble there, may have some injuries, deaths... and possibility of mixbreeding Campbells with WW... bad idea.

- Hamsters do not have human emotion, they do not feel Love or have emotional feelings like humans. So there really is no reason to breed or keep them in a male and female pair unless you have a purpose as a true hamster breeder.

DIET:
Hamsters should have a good quality staple diet that is available for them throughout the day. Grains are important for hamsters to gain protein, minerals and vitamins as well as the good fat that the body needs to stay healthy. The carbohydrates and natural sugars from grains helps in maintaining your hamster's energy and alertness throughout the day. Wrong or unhealthy diets could cause hamsters to gain weight, show no interest in using it's running wheel and does little throughout the day. Here is a guide on how to feed your hamster healthily.

Try not to go for cheap foods that you see available in the market. Habitrail, Delikate, LM Farms.... all these have little nutritional value because they are loaded with sunflower seeds and dried corn. High in fat and phosphorus. Delikate and Habitrail staple food includes alot of alfalfa pellets (the greenish brown pieces) which hamsters do not like to eat at all and you may end up throwing it away. Fresh food
Hamster needs alot of fresh food daily, but always remember you need to feed in a balance ratio. Offer 50% vegetable and 50% fruits, leaf and non leaf, sweet and non sweet, feed at least 8 - 12 veriaty per week.

Fruits: (Make sure all the seeds that are not edible are removed, grape seeds too)
Apple, Blueberries, Cherries, Cranberries, Dragon Fruit, Grapes, Honey Dew, Kiwi, Mango, Papaya, Peach, Pear, Plum, Rambutan, Star Fruit, Sun Melon, Strawberries, Watermelon.

Try not to offer too much sourish fruits like pineapple, orange and mango.

Veggies:
All vegetables.

Cabbage and Onion is NONO
Cucumber lack of nutritions.

Mealworms is a good source of protein for your hamster. They can also eat live mealworms but don't give him more than he can eat at once as they hatch into beetles after a few days. Its best to give live mealworms as they are fresh but canned or freeze-dried mealworms are also acceptable. As long as they are processed for hamsters.

Bathing a Hamster

Bathing removes natural and essential oils from the hamster’s coat, which can cause the hamster to catch a chill and die.

Bathing should only be done in exceptional circumstances, like if your hamster has paint, varnish or anything toxic on its coat that may harm it if it licks itself or ingests it. 3. If your hamster has something particularly sticky that’s can’t be cut out in its fur, then you can use shampoo, but it must be baby shampoo. Again, make sure not to get it near the hamster’s face.
4. Carefully rinse out the shampoo, and place the hamster on a towel. Dry very carefully; be careful of the hamster’s legs.
5 .Then, get a hairdryer and put it on its lowest setting. Hold it very far from the hamster and always keep your hand between the dryer and the hamster to avoid burning the skin. ** Since we are in Malaysia, I would recommended to put them in sand bath, then put the carrier to the area with abit sun light. but NOT DIRECT sunlight.
6. Wash your hamster on a warm day if possible to lessen chances of getting a chill. ** noon 12pm - 3pm
7. Make sure the fur is completely dry before returning the hamster to its cage or the shavings will stick to the damp fur.

This is not a safe way to bathe a hamster. There are no safe ways to do it. So please do not wash your hamster if it smells or looks a bit grubby.

Only if there is something toxic on the fur that cannot be cut off. This method carries the same risks as all others but this is the best way if you absolutely have to do it.

If your hamster smells bad, it may be sick and should be brought to the vet as soon as possible. To keep your hamster clean and healthy, make sure its living conditions are cleaned out regularly.

How to potty train my hamster?

First of all to make things clear, its only possible to train your hamster to pee in the toilet. You CANNOT train them to poop in the toilet. Because hamsters will eat their own poop sometimes. Yes you may think its disgusting but there are two types of hamster poop. One is the excrement which contain nothing in it just poop & the other kind that they usually eat are poop that contain nutrients that was not fully digested. Hamster digestive system is not the same as human thats why they will need to eat their poop back because it contains some vitamins/nutrients are not absorbed at the first time.


1) Purchase a litter box designed for hamsters or use a small plastic box that the hamster can jump into. Specially designed litter boxes for hamsters have one corner higher than the others to prevent hamster urine from spraying outside of the cage. Most boxes are designed to be attached to the corner of a cage. A few boxes have covers and entrances.

2) Watch your hamster at night and observe which corner of the cage it normally go to pee. Place the litter box in that corner.

3) Fill the litter box one-third full with a specially made litter for hamsters. This litter can be found at pet stores.

4) Pick up hamster urine-soaked bedding and place it in the litter box. If u found fresh hamster urine try to absorb it with tissue paper & put that tissue paper into the hamster toilet. Just put the soaked/wet part in & not the whole tissue paper.

5) Keep adding fresh urine-soaked bedding until the hamster begins to use the toilet. Relax the process usually takes time, it dosent happen overnight.

6) Keep the toilet clean and filled with fresh litter once a week once the hamster is trained on its use.

It is often found that many people do not possess a strong reading and researching habit. Although there are often long and informative posts on the first page, newbies do not seem to read them and have to be reminded frequently to do so.

Here I have made some simple and short notes. I sincerely hope that newbies will take at least 5 minutes to read them.

Housing & Setup:

Winter Whites, Russian Campbell Dwarf Hamsters, Roborovskis and Chinese Dwarfs can be housed in the below cages as well as a 1.5ft Plastic Guppy tank.


Syrian Hamsters need to be housed as below, with either an 8 inch Wodent Wheel or a 21cm Sanko Silent Wheel:

Only small amounts of vitamins are required; but they are essential to your hamster's good health. Lack of vitamins can create several health problems. Refer to the table below.

Note: You can buy vitamin for your hamster at pet shop. They come in a small bottle & all you need to do is add few drops into your hamster water bottle depending on the water volume. Please remember to change your hamster water & clean the bottle after 3days or else fungus/bacteria will start to grow in the bottle.

Q: My hamster is toilet trained but why he always sleep in the toilet?
A: Well its normal. There are many reason for it, your hamster might prefer the toilet more than the bedding. Or the temp might be warm & the toilet is more cooling than the usual place he sleeps. Or maybe he/she just like to sleep in there.

Do take note hamster do not think like how human thinks so if he/she knows that is a toilet that dosent mean he/she cant sleep in there. but we human were taught from young that we shouldnt sleep in the toilet. hamster dosent understand english so they wouldnt understand even if were are trying to teach them. You can discourage your hamster though, when u found out he/she is sleeping in the toilet you can gently blow & wake him up. keep blowing till he runs to his house to continue his sleep. Try to do that after he is potty trained around 1month later because it might affect the potty training process, you do not want your hamster to stop peeing in the toilet right after he just learned to use it.

Q: Why my hamster like to eat in his toilet?
A: Its normal. As i said before they knows its a toilet but they dont know why cant they eat in there. Its just the way they are, nothing can be done. All u can do is recycle the food back into his food bowl if its good & throw the food if its soaked in urine. If your toilet is big enough some hamster are smart, 1 conner they will use to store their food & the other conner they will use to pee.

Q: Can i keep my hamster in pairs?

Q: Why my hamster keeps drinking lots of water & peeing a lot lately?
A: 1) Maybe its just too hot so its too thirsty or dehydrated.
2) Urinary tract infections: these are more common in female than male hamsters, but males can get them too. you might also notice a bit of blood in the urine. to treat this, you'll need to make an appt. with a rodent-experienced vet who'll give you hamster-safe antibiotics such as Batril, or Albon. the infection should clear up in a week or so.
3) Diabetes, an increasingly common disease in dwarf hamsters. it's diagnosed through a urine test, which can be done either by your vet or yourself at home, using urine test strips such as Bayer Diastix.

If you hamster tests positive for diabetes, you'll immediately need to make adjustments in his diet. find a sugar-free seedmix such as Harry Hamster or Small World. you'll need to remove the corn and peas from the seedmix. and also remove any fruit from the diet as well as any treats that include sugar in the ingredients.
Your vet may be able to help you treat your diabetic hamster using a med called 'Glipizide' which has successfully treated diabetic guinea pigs as well. but you need to have a vet experienced with hamsters who will know how to weigh your hamster and come up with a Glipizide dosing based on the hamster's weight.

Q: How can I tell if my hamster is pregnant?
A: It is very difficult to tell. She will only look more fat than usual about 2 days before giving birth. She may be building a nest and will usually be more active than usual. Dwarves are pregnant for around 19-21 days (Syrians only 16 days) so the best thing to do is to wait and see! When she does give birth, consult the breeding pages of hamsterific, and remember not to touch the babies.

Q: How long do hamsters live?
A: Syrian's (teddybear hamster) usually live about three years.The smaller varieties, like the Siberian and Campbell's, not quite as long, usually around two years. The Roborovski is the dwarf hamster exception, and has been raised to three years in captivity.

Q: My hamster has escaped! How can I find it?
A: Hamsters can be regular little escape artists, but don't fret, hamsterama has the perfect solution. The first thing you should do is close all the doors, and get any other animals such as cats or dogs out of the house if possible. Put piles of your hamsters usual food mix in the corner of each room. Observe which pile of food gets eaten to determine which room your hamster is in. Once you know which room he is in, you can trap him. Take a bucket and put some bedding and some strong smelling food (such as cheese) inside. Then, using books, build steps up to the top of the bucket. The hamster should clamber up to the top, smell the delicious food and fall in, but not be able to get out!

Q: How often should I clean the cage?
A: The wet/soiled areas should be scooped out daily. The acessories should be cleaned at least once a month or whenever they get dirty. The cage should be cleaned once a week with soap and water. However if you have a potty or something similiar that hamster urinates in the bedding can be dumped out an replaced weekly while the cage can be washed and dried once a month but that's only if the hamster hasn't urinated anywhere else.

Q: Why does my hamster sleep through the day?
A: Hamsters are crepuscular, which means they like to sleep during the day and party all night long. If you don't believe me try putting your hamster's cage in your bedroom one night and see how much sleep you get. This doesn't mean you'll never see them. If you give your hamsters a treat when you get home they'll come to expect it and be waiting for you!

Q: Do hamsters bite?
A: Yes; but normally not without just cause, or maybe if they think you are a tasty sunflower seed.

Q: My hamster's wheel is squeeking and it drives me nuts! Is there anything I can do?
Try using a very small amount of petroleum jelly (Vaseline). It stops the squeaks and is not toxic unlike many other lubes like WD-40. Personally i would recommend you to get a sanko silent wheel. Build quality is great & its really silent compare to those other cheap wheels.

guys im so freaking pissed...b4 i went to nap i see the baby hammy n his mom both sleep just fine together...then 1 hour after taking a nap i hear the baby screaming..when wake up to see the mom ate the 2 weeks old baby..i dont get it why would she eat him?his kinda full grown full fur around the body and eye's open already...i hear the mom bite him till can hear da bone...seriously pissed off at the mom rite now...for no reason she killed the baby! wtf weh.... feel like cursing weh %$#@$%#^&&*()!!!!!!!!!!

err, did you touched her babies before? having reared hamsters since i was 5 thought me that if you touch the baby then the mother will most probably eat it. i dont know why but i think its because unfamiliar scent thats not hers on her baby so she thought thats not her baby. therefore, ngap ngap.

im so sorry but dont blame the mummy. i usually put the mummys cage in the corner or simply cover it with kain so that she will feel that her babies are safe. until the babies open their eyes and can eat by themselves.

nvr touch them but i read somewhere that u could at least touch them n change the bedding when they r 2 weeks old...
besides the mom ate him when i was asleep....and b4 i went and took a nap i see both of them sleeping together...
the weird thing is the baby is full of fur d and eye open...its like he can live without the mom d...
its like all a sudden she attack...food wise i give enough food n water...so im clueless why she killed the baby...
and yea the baby sometimes go to the food bowl and eats by himself...not blaming but ermmm kinda pissed for awhile...
was really hoping things would be fine coz its my 1st time having a baby hammie...

i know how you feel because last time mine was also like that. and all i ever did was put sengkuang in the cage. i was only 9 then and saw the mummy munching on all the babies, tinggal the usus part only (usus i think) thats something no one wants to experience.

could be she woke up and was like, whos this? forgot that she gave birth, hehe.

i lost my male agouti WW...this is the fourth time he escape from his cage...for the last 3 times, i found him under my bed...but this time i think he lost forever...
have been searching for him since 7am...already search everywhere in the house...still cant find him...just hoping he will return when hes hungry...

@noruddin, how did he escape? aren't u using tank cage?how can WW escape?

i separate him from the mother and the babies...i put him into smaller tank...im not really sure how he escape from the tank...i think he climb up his house and jump to the tank edge...but i never saw him jump...never once...

winter white are able to jump quite high. highest jumper is robo la....& syrian is the lowest hahaha coz they are heavy.

anyway try buying some fresh sunflower seed, put it in a container & start blowing at every possible conner. maybe he your hamster smells it he will come out for it. keep your doors close hopefully your hamster havent escape from your house yet.

i just got back from work at 7am...when im home my front door is already open...

usually when i got back from work, i will feed my cat(lives outside the house)...but after i pour friskies into the bowl, my cat did not eat it while usually she will eat it all...hmmm i got a really bad feelings about it... hopefully my hamster did not went outside the house...

btw izit normal for them to drink a lot of water? a lot as in the water bottle is finished within 2 days by only 3 of them

i added your question & the answer into the first page already under 'common questions'. probably normal since you are sharing 1 bottle with 3 hamsters. but do check for other symptoms if u can find out which hamster is the 1 who drinks the most.

i always check on them. yup only one that constantly drinking water actually. but no blood or anything.

i updated the info again at the first page. well if u know which 1 is keep drinking water constantly u could bring him to the vet for check up. they can test the hamster blood or urine for diabetes. if its urinary bladder infection then maybe a little harder to check...that i m not so sure...the vet should know what to do. Just monitor him in the meanwhile...if its just 1-2days excessive drinking & the other days normal then probably he was just thirsty.

nope...he is that way since birth. now about 6 weeks old. Really non stop drinking, day and night, if I heard hamster drinking water confirm its him. normally how much vet will charge?

btw they really scream a lot, izit normal? i just blow at them from the top of the cage and they can scream non stop for few min lol. first time having WW btw. I do have a few robo and totally no prob with them

oh maybe he is just born like that la then i guess...like to drink water. depends...could be around rm30 just to see the vet. depends on the vet & the treatment they give. screaming? i m not so sure coz i never keep WW before...maybe they are scared?

based on my experience...all my WW dosnt like when i blow to them...but they never scream...just wavining their arms(or front legs) giving sign they dont like it...but for your case, i think they are still babies or still new with u, so they are easier getting scared...

i put shreaded tissue into the tank...they will collect the tissue and put it into their house..they like their house filled with something soft...

try to toilet train your hamster. then all u need to do is change the toilet sand

sure ah tissue paper is not good? coz what i know is the cotton type is not good...tissue is ok...usually hamster will take that tissue paper into their sleeping place coz tissue paper got less smell compare to bedding plus its soft. anyway do share the link on tissue paper is not good for hamster...would be interested to read on that...

using tissue paper is way way better than using wood shavings because wood shavings cannot be digested while tissue paper can degrade.

since hamster hoard their bedding, if cannot digest will cause complications if ingested too much

as far as i know...the toilet roll(brown one) is made of recycle paper only...nothing added...
just put the toilet inside their cage and see if they pee@poo in there...

i dont know about your hamster but mine after he wakes up sure he will go pee. he will go to his toilet & wait a while in there (he is peeing). after that then he will start eating or do whatever he wants.

if your hamster dont pee right after they woke up then maybe u can try smelling your cage bedding. where the place it stinks the most should be the area where they pee. maybe try putting less bedding next time so that it will be more easier to spot if its wet or not.

its not that difficult to toilet train a hamster
toilet training a hamster is easier than toilet training a dog
reason being: hamsters are clean animals
same like cats.. cats are very clean thats why they keep grooming themselves and burry their poo
hamster also clean animal

most hamster use a corner to pee
check your cage at all the edges to check if there is any pee
if not.. another area they might like to pee at is like dark ares..
cause they want privacy

yeah and if all those areas also dont have
then you have to start sniffing..
or throw all the bedding away and just see where it stains..
cause hamster urine very acidic.. will stain the plastic

once you found the spot
put a toilet there (can buy from pet shop)
and put some of the bedding that they pee on inside the toilet

usually hay is for guinea pig or rabbit...not advisable to use hay as bedding for hamster coz if its sharp & when the hamster carry it around in his pouch there might be chance of him poking his pouch.

depends on what kinda hamster ur planning to get...if syrian abit expensive coz u need a big wheel 8inch and a 2ft tank coz they r not suitable in a cage..and just get 1 syrian coz they r solitary kinda type hamster so approximately around rm150 below...if winter white i assume below rm100 also can d coz they can stay in a cage made at pet shop d and a smaller wheel around 5-6inch or 4 i think...and do use a suction cup if ur planning to buy a 2ft plastic tank..

umm i dont have much knowledge on wood types but pine & aspen is different. depends on the bedding...some aspen are digestible so even if the hamster accidentally ate it its still safe plus they are soft so its good for the hamster feet or even if he collects it in his pouch. but NEVER buy bedding made from pine or cedar.

as mark said depends on the type u want to get. for syrian hamster u need a little extra budget. if your budget is not much u can buy a winter white hamster with appropriate cage size.

your gf got keep hamster before? if no then i wouldnt recommend robo since they are quite fast & hard to handle. syrian is bigger in size (thats why u need bigger housing & equipment) but they are easier to handle since they are quite slow. winter white ok too...they are a little bit smaller than syrian...once they are tame it will be great

Dont forget to read the first page, everything is explained over there & teach your gf how to keep good care for the hamster. most important part is to get good quality food. vitakraft is good...u can get the small packet around rm11 if i m not mistaken. harry hamster is good too but i never see they sell in small packet. bedding around rm10 for small packet (never buy pine or cedar), food bowl around rm10, bottle water around rm12. wheel depends on what type u want, there is cheapo wheel but its quite noisy if the hamster use it in the room. 6" sanko wheel u can get around rm30... & for the housing depends on the brand & size....of course the price i state can be different. everything depends on the brand, quality & place u buy it

p/s: i m selling my cage & bedding (unopen packet) but since u want to give her as birthday present i dont think its good to give her used set right

the reason why we dont get ceder or pine is because they are very toxic to hamsters. they produce toxic that is bad for the hamster respiratory system & will react with the hamster pee which is very acidic. the way they are processed is also bad...they undergo so many types of chemical process...anyway the best is aspen but the problem is its very very hard to find over here. plus it will be quite expensive too.

i think the 1 u saw is chipsi bedding that has apple scent frankly speaking chispi isnt the best bedding too but its quite affordable for people like me (student). chipsi bedding is made from softwood which is from fir & spruce they do produce oils & there is smell from it too (but its way way better than using pine bedding) which isnt that good for hamster respiratory. but its said to be safe for hamster & its quite soft too. i been using that bedding & so far its ok for my hamster. same goes for delikate brand too as they are made from softwood too. but the good thing about delikate is they do not have strong smell compare to chipsi which i assume is good for hamster. any scented bedding is bad for hamster respiratory. if u want to buy bedding get natural scent, avoid those apple scent, lime, lemon etc...

& of course the best brand will be breeder's celect or healthy pet. corn cob type of bedding is also very good but its hard to find & quite expensive. but if u can afford it then why not...its good to give your hamster the best stuff u can provide. oh btw shredded paper is also good for hamster as bedding but its too expensive. (u cant use newspaper as they have ink on it & it might be harmful for your hamster).

aspen and pine does come from different type of wood (tree)
pine are from softwood while aspen is from hardwood
actually all softwood are bad for hamsters.. cause all of them will produce toxic
however, pine and cedar produces the most toxic and it is extremely bad for them.
they may look similiar so do read the packaging.. if it doesnt say anything then don't buy it
(you wouldnt buy some food stuff that doesnt have ingredient list would you?)

most of the time, hamsters do well alone.
syrian is solitary
winter white and russian campbells may do in pair but they are not exactly very social animals
robos are social animals, can do well in groups

normally, a tank is recommended because it is easier to clean, its cheaper, you can buy your own accessories which you feel is best for your hamsters, and most importantly, you can find the right size for your hamsters
most cages are too small for syrians
the downside of tanks is that there isnt much room for air ventilation, so if your hamsters does not attempt to escape (my hamlet does) the you can dont cover the top
if your hamster attempts to escape, go buy the 1cm X 1cm mesh wire tops from diy shop and diy a cover so your hamsters can stay in while having ventilation

bedding.. if wood shaving, as usual.. no pine no cedar.. best if you can find aspen
i know kaytee has aspen beddings but it is very difficult to find kaytee nowadays
some hamster owners have recommended chipsi and delikate
chipsi bedding, although not pine or cedar, is from softwood.. so still got chemicals just less
(last time chipsi bedding states that theirs is from conifer woods but now just write softwood.. this is dodgy as pine is also from softwood.. we don't know which softwood they use.. so be careful and think properly)
as for delikate.. i read that in some forums, chipsi users have been going to delikate instead when they started writing softwood as the source of their shaving instead of conifers.. some continued and realize the quality dropped so shift to delikate and claims delikate is better
however, delikate does not state what wood it comes from at all... only states all natural bedding..
so kaytee aspen (beware kaytee has pine also.. so find the aspen one not pine one) would be good.. but chipsi and delikate.. you have to decide.. maybe buy both and mix to see which one is better for your hamster

you may also use carefresh or woody pet.
carefresh is rolls of newspaper while woody pet is wood pellets
benefits is very absorbant. no chemicals, no dust
but it is very expensive
dont ask me which i use.. cause i use shreded paper bedding (can digest, no chemicals)

one more thing you should think about is food
the better the food you give your hamster, the more likely it will be healthy and live longer
it is recommended for you to get either vitakraft or harry hamster
last time, prestige hamster nature had been recommended.
from my readings, the quality has dropped
some of the food turned mouldy and all
if you ask me.. alternate between vitakraft and harry hamster
10 days vitakraft.. 10 days harry hamster
(beware.. i heard that harry hamster pellet quite big for dwarfs)

they have given good tips u need to know...i just want to add some tips based on my experienced+knowledge from others...

my tips is how to choose good hamster...by good, i mean the hamster is tame, easy to handle, not easily scared, can get along with others and most important loves to play with u...

heres the tips:

IMPORTANT
-choose hamster with perfectly match incisor teeth(front teeth)...
-choose hamster without any signs of abnormalities(skin problems, abnormal movements(like alwas running in circles or running in one direction(clockwise or counterclockwise)), wet fur, etc.)
-dont choose hamster that likes to disturb other hamster...

less important
-its is better to buy/adopt hamster from a home breeder than from the pet shop...usually pet shop dont give enough attentions to the hamster they own because they have too many types of pet to take care of...also, usually the pet shop hamster age is 1 or 2 months plus...its is easier for owner and hamster to bond if hamster is still young(3weeks is the youngest)...
-do not choose hamster that always grooming itself...hamsters groom theirself because of 2 reasons...1st to clean theirself and 2nd to relief stress...there is possibility that the hamster that always grooming itself is easily stressed out...
-choose hamster that not running away or hard to catch with your hands...thats mean that the hamster is easily scared or do not thrust human...it has high possibilities that the hamster will not let u hold them with your hands even u already bond with them...
-do not choose skinny hamsters(if u like chubby2 hamster like me )...hamsters are skinny because either they sick, or has small appetite...young fat/chubby hamster will grow even more fater/chubbier

can anyone tell me why syrian must be place in a tank instead of the normal hamster cages..coz i was telling my aunt since she wants a syrian hamster and i advice her to use the tank instead of the normal hamster cage..i told her the size of the tank is not relevant for a syrian..her excuse was tat she bought a lot of connecting tubes to add to another cage to make it bigger..so i need a solid answer.

as you may see...syrian are big so in short they need a big tank n wider area to roam around simple as that...small cages might stress them out n keep on grooming themself which will cost fur to drop or lose fur frm what i knw..as u knw syrian need a big wheel 8" at least...and that big...i dont knw if an 8" wheel can put at a normal cage coz its pretty big u knw...but if ur aunt already buy all the stuff tubes etc that nothing we can do...

as mark said its not the type that matters...its the size. its very easy to get a 2ft tank rather than finding a 2ft cage. until today i never see a 2ft cage yet unless u plan to get those for guinea pig but wouldnt recommend that coz its short & cover holes are big, the hamster can easily jump out of it & escape. i m using a 8" wheel & the wheel itself is very big (the height) in my tank. if your aunty cage is 2ft then its ok....tubes dosent really give extra space for the hamster but its good to have them as additional...they will usually eat in the tubes & sleep in there sometimes...

its fine to use a cage around 1.5ft too...no harm...just that 2ft is recommended....you wouldnt like to stay in a house that fits 1 person only do u?

i never saw that bedding before so i m not so sure what type of wood they use. they never write on the packet ah? its hard to say but if they didnt write then most probably they are made from pine...try to feel the texture...if it feels rough & looks like the shavings made by living world then most likely its pine...

first of all..
if she wants connecting tubes
yes it can be big but she might need like two ovo pads to fit stuff of syrian hamsters
im not even sure if an ovo pad can fit an 8" wheel for syrians

connecting tubes may be combine to extend to a large home..
but then cause its connected by tubes... the space may not fit all of the syrian hamster stuff
if you make the house super big.. but the nest box is in one end.. the toilet in the next end
your hamster must travel far..
but you cannot put near also.. because not enough space.. must extend thru tubes

connecting tubes cages has the least ventilation and is difficult to find your hamster
at least tanks we can leave the top open (if your hamster doesnt try to escape)
those fully connecting tube ones only have dotted holes here and there for air

if your aunt is getting the half connecting half cage one
it has metal.. hamster will bite it to grind teeth which will be noisy
but most important is that.. the paint will come off and the bar will rust
but your hamster will still bite the rust and might get lead poisoning

they can hide in the tube and you will have less bonding time with them

tube cages are also the hardest to clean
you need to remove all the connections to clean.. then put it back again
syrian hamster.. that is not potty trained have the smelliest pee btw.. due to their acidic pee
(but syrian easy to potty train.. so if possible please do potty train them)

owh.. and syrian hamsters are bigger than other hamsters
i read at some foreign website that the owner reported their syrian hamster getting stuck in the tubes
of course overseas, there are many better diets for hamsters.. so their hamsters might be chubbier than ours
but still the possibility is there

My hamster's eye is popping out. I'm really panicking as today is a Sunday, wonder if there's any open vets?

I suspect glaucoma. Or could be resulted from something entered his eye. If I can't find a vet, what do I do? I read to wet his eyeball with a saline solution. What type ok for hamster?

TTDI and Damansara Heights Vets are all closed. I went to Ikano, they don't have vets anymore. But the lady there advice me to put some Eye Mo on his eye.

She said it's 'busuk' already. Might have to a) go for surgery, or b) rid of the eye. Probably caused by constipation also. If there's too much pressure in the hammie body, it could cause something like this.

For now, I place him in his carrier (small but clean), put some tissue and shredded paper. Drop so Eye MO on his eye and monitor him. He's still active and restless (due to new environment?).

Btw, he is a syrian about 8 months old only.

constipation or something stuck in their cheek pouch also
thats why cedar and pine bedding is super bad.

Okay, gold and white are sisters. I bought them from breeder. About 3 weeks ago , they keep on fighting , white is the dominant one so i put my male hamster with white , and isolate gold into my male hamster cage.
White at first didnt like chip , my male hamster but she never fight , just squeek. Now she very close with chip and i think she's pregnant and may give birth in a few days( I saw them have -wink wink-2 weeks ago )
And now, white hates gold. She will bite gold whenever she smells her. Gold ear and butt had bleed.. So i never mix them again. And ever since i separate white and gold , gold has been... acting very strange.

She will squeek for no apparent reason as if scolding somebody.
I put fresh bathing sand for her everyday , but she's still so dirty!
My chip and white dont have bathing sand but they are so.... white and soft and clean! ( actually i take turn for them. One day they get bathing sand and gold dont get , next day vise versa but i been leaving it on gold's cage this few days )

Any ideas why this happen?

And crap! My vet friend , gave me a big hamster cage and 2 big pack of chipsi bedding! I gave the classic one to my boyfriend coz he wanna keep my roborovski , so i took the apple scented one for my 3 winter whites... Shud i stop using it?

u worry scented bedding will harm your hammies?..
if u use chipsy scented bedding, u shouldnt be worry...i have used apple scented chipsy bedding for 1 and half month...i used it in the tank where the my WW babies live...all of them seem fine...and they live happily and healty...

i added those recommended vets in the first page. let me know if there is any other recommended vets out there which treats hamsters. i will update the list then

its not recommended to use scented bedding but if u bought already nvm u can use it...if the scent is too strong u can try to leave the bedding open in air for few hours first...let the scent to come out first but most likely the scent will still be there...i used strawberry bedding scent before when i didnt know scented bedding is not recommended. My hamster is still alive & is still healthy till today


btw who breed mealworm before? how big is the beetle? my mealworm still no beetle how long does it take for the mealworm to change to beetle?

Update:

I went to the vet in TTDI. Dr Clement I think. Service charge at RM30. He sum it up as a dead eyeball. I'll have to use eye drops Alcon (RM8.90) on my hammie as his tear duct is already not functioning.

It's not infectious. Could be his eye got poked by his cage/water dispenser/bedding etc.

His advice is too keep the eye clean and moist as to lessen the dry pain. In 5 days or so, if the eye drops on its own, I should be thankful. If not, surgery which will cost me RM200++.

Currently using tissue+paper bedding instead of wood shaving. He is still active but spend time a lot on resting also. How do I cheer him up? I don't wanna let him run around the house like he usually does. His eyes him rubbing into stuff. *faint*

Yea..i juz cod with 1 lyn member yzjean for 1 WW..very cute..haha...yst i go pet more..bought chipsi bedding apple scent also..hope it is ok for my hammies..thr is not much brand for bedding..anotger brand is living world..but i saw it contain pine..dunno it is good anot..coz the seller also gt gv me 1 pack... and shud i prepare a toilet for my hammie??.. hmm..i would like u all recommend which brands is good for bedding..food and others thing..coz yst i saw alot of brand..japan brand also gt..n habitrual brand for food..dunno good anot...and are living world a good brand???...

living world and habitrail accessories are alright
but not their bedding or food
living world contains pine
any bedding with pine or cedar is not good

i do not agree with saying "i used chipsi scented for 5 years and my hamsters are fine so they are 100% safe to use"
sorry but thats like saying "i've let my dog run free for 5 years on the road and he never had a car accident.. therefore dogs never get accidentally hit by cars before
all i would say is. if you love your hammy. nothing scented UNLESS you cant find an alternative
(i.e. most hamster bathing sand are scented.. but chincilla (NOT CAT) bathing sands are fine)

food: vitakraft (harry hamster recommended for syrians only)

yes prepare a toilet.
if you potty train your hamster your job of cleaning the cage will be much much less
it'll be less smelly too (mine no smell at all)

& about scented beddings u can read over here >> http://hamsterhideout.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=59802. another alternative bedding is corn cob type (the one made from natural corn). those are safe for hamsters but the disadvantage of that bedding is its does a bad job is insulating heat unlike wood shavings.


btw dream i used the woddy pack already last week....my hamster doesnt really like it...i notice the smell is too strong & he dosent sleep/eat in the toilet when i started use that. but it does a excellent job in absorbing his urine tho...

havent...going to try it tho after my chipsi classic finishes. apparently i read its better than chipsi in terms of scent. they say chipsi scent is stronger compare to delikate. (not sure if they changed their quality already or not...hopefully its still good like back in those days)...

thats why suspect they change their softwood source from spruce and fir to pine
i still got 1.5 pack of vitakraft dinner which will expire in december so i cant afford to buy harry hamster to make the 10 day switch thingy yet
