want to ask..

just now petshop give me this 1 pack of hay for free.. it smell like tea or sun flower drink... i was wondering, since the hay roots look sharp and hard.. is it ok for hamster? or that one is for rabbit?

p/s there's no brand on it, it was a repack...

usually hay is for guinea pig or rabbit...not advisable to use hay as bedding for hamster coz if its sharp & when the hamster carry it around in his pouch there might be chance of him poking his pouch.

the reason why we dont get ceder or pine is because they are very toxic to hamsters. they produce toxic that is bad for the hamster respiratory system & will react with the hamster pee which is very acidic. the way they are processed is also bad...they undergo so many types of chemical process...anyway the best is aspen but the problem is its very very hard to find over here. plus it will be quite expensive too.

i think the 1 u saw is chipsi bedding that has apple scent  hmm.gif frankly speaking chispi isnt the best bedding too but its quite affordable for people like me (student). chipsi bedding is made from softwood which is from fir & spruce they do produce oils & there is smell from it too (but its way way better than using pine bedding) which isnt that good for hamster respiratory. but its said to be safe for hamster & its quite soft too. i been using that bedding & so far its ok for my hamster. same goes for delikate brand too as they are made from softwood too. but the good thing about delikate is they do not have strong smell compare to chipsi which i assume is good for hamster. any scented bedding is bad for hamster respiratory. if u want to buy bedding get natural scent, avoid those apple scent, lime, lemon etc...  icon_rolleyes.gif

& of course the best brand will be breeder's celect or healthy pet. corn cob type of bedding is also very good but its hard to find & quite expensive. but if u can afford it then why not...its good to give your hamster the best stuff u can provide. oh btw shredded paper is also good for hamster as bedding but its too expensive. (u cant use newspaper as they have ink on it & it might be harmful for your hamster).

thank you so much for the info thumbup.gif

I have 2 winter white.. Male n female. And i think female is pregnant. But my problem is, found out the female lost fur at the black stripe (in picture below).

The male seem to have no problem with fur.

Is pregnant WW have fur problem?
If it is mites, it should attack both WW right?
Or its my female ww have sensitive skin with the bedding? Im using chipsi brand)

Did u change the bedding suddenly? Or did u use quite long time?
Maybe its irritation and the hamster bite the fur.
How old are they? It may be old age.
If its mites , it can attack both ww , but it depends.
Before yes i change complete like 100% from old to new bedding. Just last night i change 70% and add 30% new bedding.

They are not old, got them from the petshop end of august still very smal. And i can see the size different from arrived home till now.

As for now i try to put less shop bedding n put more tissue paper. And i try to give vegetable too. Not sure if this gonna help.

My WW that have fur problem (above) finally gave birth yesterday.

It was her first time, n my first time too. I was freaking out to see she playing the wheel while labor lol.

Anyway i can see 6 pups but she only keep 1 for now and eat the others. There are 2 i saw not moving when labor, looks like died during labor eh??

My cats never eat theire kittens. So looking at hamster freak me out again tongue.gif

Im not sure if this 1 pup gonna survive or not, so far day 2 now.

As for her fur problem, im thinking maybe that pregnant stressing her out and also the bedding. Need to try other type of bedding seem very hard to get, cos most petshop selling those look like wood.

The one i used before chipsi is this cheap apple brand.. I see that chipsi is softer..

Im sure what it meant by dusty. Is it like the smallest part of the bedding? If yes, then i found that in chipsi especially the wet pee part. Maybe it is because i crunch too hard when i put the bedding.

I bought my chipsi at pets wonderland and i think their hamster in the shop maybe used that too tongue.gif

Anybody use bedding beside wood type? Cos i heard some say using that cat litter that made from recycle paper?

My hamster don't really like the bedding i gave them. They will just sweep it away. The bedding i gave them is the wood shaving. Don't really know the name because it is written in Japanese.

I read somewhere it is normal... For bed or home they remove the bedding.

If i give tissue, they will move the bedding aside and use tissue to make their home for sleep.

My WW that lost fur the other week started to grow fur back. So i believe its not mites eh.. And the male have no fur problem in same cage.

I realise my WW is more active at playing and messing around with cage n bedding than my robo. My ww food bowl always full with bedding bcos they play digging, but my robo bowl so clean with food properly. I thought robo more hyper. Is it true or depent on situation?

My robo are very shy.. Especially the male. But female quite brave to come near and have a smell of my hand. Maybe i have kept her long than the male. She arrived here in may, and the male in august.

I think it's normal my robo too very particular with his foods.. he will keep his food bowl as clean as he can unless after he was in the bathing sand & straight away went to eat den the food bowl will have some sand. Ohh.. u can shred some tissue for your robo to play with.. My robo love tissue very much.. Everytime when i shred some for him.. He will bite it & run around playing with it.. & sometime will just make a circle to become his nest & sleep.
*
Yes i give them tissue for both robo n ww and they lovin it.

My robo keep the bowl clean, and they go eat in the sand bath throw all seed waste in there... I can see kuaci around the bath box lol..

While my ww throw everyhing around ... Messy...

I have 2 winter white, a male and female. when the female got pregnant, i put the male in another cage. after the babies are ready to go away (to friends), i put back the male into the cage with female. they grew up together, and having life together till adult. and that one time separation makes the female become aggressive. now the female bully the male, making that screaming sound whenever the female awake. why is that sudden aggression happen to the female?

Have anybody experience winter white hamster pups born same time but different size?

Today, the babies are 10 days old.. weird i saw 1 small size. from the size it does look like 5 days old, but others bigger.

that little one is active and doesn't look sick at all.. just that the size is smaller than other 4.
