Hi guys. Im new in this hobby. Just bought 2 winter whites. One keep in my girlf's house, one in mine. Just wanna share with you all the horrible experience just now when I was buying them. They keep Robos and WWs in the same tank. And no one in the shop knew how to differentiate between them. But one malay guy sort of knew.

So we told him to pick a female and a male for us. And teach us how to sex them. He squeezed them up by pressing against it very hard and put them upside down very forcefully and rough. The hamsters were screaming and I couldn't even concentrate on what he was telling me at all. One of them kena until shit. Dont know if its due to fear or due to the guy pressing against it's stomach too hard. The guy even shook their houses and the hamsters fall out everywhere. He shook it those were mere objects inside! Really sim tia watching them handle their animals. -___-

But anyway, I'm really happy with the 2 WW's that I bought. They're really adorable and sleep alot. Hope to learn more from you all. smile.gif

apparently, the wheel that comes with the cage doesn't spin well. it gets stuck half way through the rotation and have to use more force to make it spin again. therefore my hamster wasn't able to spin it. any solution guys?

no cos mine attached to the cage one. its outside one. so if i take out the wheel, there will be a hole there. and the cage is too cramped to put in another wheel. :\

^ what kinda wheel is that? usually cages come with a wheel wer there is a knob behind and u can just fix the wheel anywer as long as there are metal bars. if urs is not that kind then maybe u nid to apply some oil like what babybb says. or u can check the connection of the wheel. sometimes bad connection causes the wheel to stuck too.

hamster does shit when he is scared. bcoz mine does. he shit while lying down wen i scold him biggrin.gif
*
this wheel is like attached through a hole the size of a water bottle's radius? and the wheel is outside the cage one. then got one hole for the hamster to crawl into.

QUOTE(infernoaswen @ Jan 12 2012, 12:37 PM)
try take some pics & post here...wondering what kind of wheel is that....anyway u can use baby oil, Veg oil etc...just avoid chemicals like wd40 etc coz its harmful for hamsters...
*
i'll take some pictures when i'm not too lazy la. but now its using its wheel as a scratching zone de. it goes there to scratch. i realized my hamster scratches itself alot. dont know why. did some googling and apparently, scratching with its back paws and licking its feet after scratching means it is itching. dunno why my hamster itching also.

and also, my hamster abit bitey. it either bites me or it avoids me. when it wants to sniff me, it will lead to it nibbling my finger then biting. if it doesnt sniff, then it will lansi with my finger. ==

your hamster could be bitey because of its harsh treatment by the petshop you bought it from.
making him fearful of humans.
instead of pointing out a finger which hamsters can easily nibble and bite on, put your hand as a fist for him to sniff then he wont bite
also, you can try wearing a shirt to sleep then after that put it on your hamster cage so he can familiarize with your scent.

do not use baby oil, vegetable oil (best is olive oil) to lubricate your wheel is better because baby oil is not edible.
as recommended in the first threat, i also support using plastic fish aquarium tanks than using "hamster cages" as the accessories that come with "hamster cage" are poor in quality.
(i.e. leaky bottles, plastic bowls, insufficient place to put a toilet and toilet train your hamster)

scratching alot.. some hamsters do it as part of their grooming
hamsters are very very clean animals and will groom themselves
but if they groom too much, it is a sign of anxiety.
however, if it is scratching, he might be having mites
or allergy towards the wood shaving

to eliminate allergy as a source of his scratching, you may want to stop using wood shaving for a while and use tissue papers instead.

thank you for really taking your time to reply all my questions. really really appreciate it. i just went to buy a new silent wheel, some wood gnaws and sunflower seeds. fixed the wheel, gave it sunflower seeds, put in a piece wood gnaw inside the cage already. so far its alot happier and is willing to climb onto my hand already. and im gonna change the bedding the next bedding changing session. thanks alot for all your help!

you are most welcome
love responsible hamster owners smile.gif
*p/s: dont give too many sunflower seeds, use occasionally as treats, cause sunflower seed is fattening
*

i'm sorry to hear that. but your hamster is really lucky to be able to have been in the hands of a wonderful owner. because from what i've heard, hamsters only live for around 2 years usually. right? correct me if i'm wrong.

anyway, my hamster is still quite young. i think maybe around 4-6 months max? so i really dont think she's getting all these from old age. i have applied the medicine called Fobancort ointment, which was given to my girlfriend by the vet.

after i applied the cream, the whole night last night my poor little hamster was so uncomfortable she kept trying to rub the cream off her body. i could see her scratching and cleaning herself and rubbing her skin against the wall. :\

everything in her cage that i have used right now, i have used for 2-3 weeks already. now only got problem. i usually have seen her sleeping on her pee. do you think it could be the cause? but i've gotten her for about 4-5 weeks now. and she always sleep on her pee.

I think it's quite regular scene to see hamster sleep on the pee... not literally but on the sandbox with the pee... my current WW and my late robo do that..

It's better for you to take it and consult the vet.
*
yeah i guess i might. right now shes doing fine already. she dont try to get rid of the cream as much as yesterday already. i wanna ask, what kind of bedding do you guys use? i use mia bedding looks like those that they use for gerbils. i feel it could be uncomfortable for her. just wanna know what bedding you all use.

i would suggest to get the 'litter sand' too....i am using it & its really great in absorbing the pee. Plus when it come in contact with the pee, it will join together & form something like a rock...then all i need to do is scoop it out & put new fresh one if needed. But its up to you if you want to use bedding, woody pet or litter sand...but bear in mind bedding is the worst when it comes to absorbing the hamster pee.

Reason why we ask to put the wet bedding in the litter box is so that the hamster knows that is the place to pee. Also the bedding that you are using i believe is actually hay right? Those are usually for guinea pigs & rabbit. Not so suitable for hamster...(i read before somewhere  sweat.gif )
*
i live in penang. my place here can get the toilet sand thing i think. but woody pet i dont think i see before. later i cari. and if i dont use this hay, the rest the bedding all has pine and cedar in it, i think it's worse. :\ i cant find any good bedding.

woody pet is actually a litter but can be used as a bedding
for larger animals such as horses and cats, it is used to absorb their urine
and even when used with such large animals (larger animal = more pee), there isnt much smell

http://www.woodypet.com/

i bought from
http://petshack.com.my/webshaper/store/vie...ProductItem=530

p/s: my hamster toilet im using this
http://petshack.com.my/webshaper/store/vie...ProductItem=402
*when buying toilets for hamster, success is higher when it is a corner design
*
looks good! but i dont think i can find here. will see how. i know for hamster bedding and food. have to pick certain kind/brand right? but for their litter, will it matter whatever brand it is? will the chemicals or whatever do them any harm?

nvr had dwarf hammy b4, do winter white are obedient like syrian? or they just like to run around and dont lke to be cuddled like roboski or any dwarf related hammies?
*
i think it depends on their personality. they're supposed to be quite cuddlable. but my winter white is a little bitey. it tends to think my hand is food 80% of the time. whereas my girlfriend's winter white is just really really polite and soft. he can just lie on it's back in my girlfriend's hand and let her touch his belly. very manja.

ya lor.. where to find RM 30 so cheap
aih i also bought mine for RM 45 or so sad.gif

btw, finally drilled a hole through my aquarium
no cracks yippie!
this brand is very good.
last time i bought my toilet got free one sample of this litter
its not fine so wont irritate hamsters nose
it really controls odour, not like bathing sand (thats why i dont recommend bathing sand, doesnt absorb the urine smell and its usually scented, bad for hamsters)
its medically treated, not only to get rid of the smell but also it kills germs

down point?
freaking expensive, unsustainable price for me
*
yeah! i also got the toilet! got free sample inside! i just poured all into the toilet. lol. then i put into my hamster's cage. my hamster go and sniff sniff. dunno she got eat the litter or not. is it okay if she ate it? i also put some of her urine-soaked tissue inside already. hopefully she go and pee there.

anyway im happy i bought a good brand! so it kills germs also? thats good news! means i dont have to worry about my hamster itching from sleeping on it's pee anymore.

if i leave my hamster cage like that i will have insomnia looking for hamlet every night
sure climb out one
ya bf came back from aussie so catch him to drill hole for me

do not suggest hamsters to eat litter sand and i dont think they actually eat them
maybe just sniff and taste alil.. should be ok
since living world litter sand is actually manufactured for hamsters

some people use cat litter cause its way cheaper but then i heard hamsters are allergic to some products used to manufacture cat stuffs

last time i bought my toilet that time, i use the litter sand i was like WHOA no need scared will smelly d
but found out it was so expensive so i bought bathing sand
i thought bathing sand = litter sand. WRONG WRONG WRONG
bathing sand doesnt cover the urine smell at all and many brands are so fine that it harms your hamster
also, its often scented (blueberry, lemon, rose, etc) no good at all
*
i use bathing sand for my hamster too. but i dont put it inside her cage one. i tried once. bad idea. she peed all over it and it stick to the cage and stinks like shit! so when i want her to bathe, i take her out then put her in her bathroom to sand bath.
