The History

On his appointment he released 24 players and began to reshape the team.Promotion to the First Division was achieved in 1961–62, and the club won the League for the first time in 17 years in 1963–64. Another League title followed in 1965–66, after the club had won their first FA Cup the previous season. The club won the League and UEFA Cup in 1972–73 and the FA Cup again a year later; after this, Shankly retired and was replaced by his assistant Bob Paisley.Paisley was even more successful than Shankly and the club won the League and UEFA Cup in 1975–76, his second season as manager. The following season they retained the League title, won the European Cup for the first time, but lost in the FA Cup final, narrowly missing out on a treble. Liverpool retained the European Cup the next season, and the season after won the League again with 68 points—a domestic record, conceding only 16 goals in 42 league matches.During the nine seasons Paisley managed the club, Liverpool won 21 trophies, including three European Cups, a UEFA Cup, six league titles and three consecutive League Cups. The only domestic trophy to elude him was the FA Cup.

Paisley retired in 1983 and (as Shankly had done) handed the reins to his assistant, veteran coach Joe Fagan. The succession of coaches came from the Anfield Boot Room where the Liverpool staff discussed strategy and allegedly stored gin.[10] Liverpool won three trophies in Fagan's first season in charge: the League, League Cup and European Cup, becoming the first English side to win three trophies in a season.Liverpool reached the European Cup final again in 1985. The match was against Juventus at the Heysel Stadium. Before kick-off, disaster struck: Liverpool fans breached a fence which separated the two groups of supporters and charged the Juventus fans. The resulting weight of people caused a retaining wall to collapse, killing 39 fans, mostly Italians. The match was played regardless and Liverpool lost 1–0 to Juventus. English clubs were consequently banned from participating in European competition for five years; Liverpool received a ten-year ban, which was later reduced to six years. Fourteen of their fans received convictions for involuntary manslaughter.

Fagan resigned after the disaster and Kenny Dalglish was appointed as player-manager.During his reign, the club won another three League Championships and two FA Cups, including a League and Cup "Double" in 1985–86. Liverpool's success was overshadowed by the Hillsborough Disaster: in an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989, hundreds of Liverpool fans were crushed. 94 fans died that day; the 95th victim died in hospital from his injuries four days later, and the 96th died nearly four years later without regaining consciousness. After the Hillsborough tragedy there was a governmental review of stadium safety. Known as the Taylor Report, it paved the way for legislation which required top-division teams to have all-seater stadiums. The report ruled that the main reason for the disaster was overcrowding due to a failure of police control.Dalglish cited the Hillsborough Disaster and its repercussions as the reason for his resignation in 1991. He was replaced by former player Graeme Souness. Apart from winning the FA Cup in 1992, Souness achieved little success and was replaced by a former member of the "Boot Room", Roy Evans. Evans fared little better: a League Cup victory in 1995 was his only trophy. Gérard Houllier was appointed as co-manager in 1998–99, but was left in sole charge after Evans resigned in November 1998.

In his second season in charge Liverpool won a unique treble of the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.In the 2001-02 season, during which Houllier underwent major heart surgery, Liverpool finished second behind Arsenal.The following seasons failed to live up to expectations and Houllier was replaced by Rafael Benítez. The club finished fifth in his first season in charge but won the UEFA Champions League by beating Milan 3–2 in a penalty shootout after the match finished 3–3.The following season Liverpool finished third with 82 points—their highest total since 1988. They won the FA Cup as they had the Champions League victory the previous season, by beating West Ham United in penalty shootout after the match finished at 3–3. In 2006–07, the club's search for investment came to an end when American businessmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks became the owners of Liverpool in a deal which valued the club and its outstanding debts at £218.9 million. That season, the club reached another Champions League final, but this time lost 2–1 to Milan

I don't think Aquaman will quit. He looks like he'll stay. Numbering wise is just a formality. We need squad depth and he and Raul "cool as f*ck" Meireles should stay

I would love to see Aquilani and Adam playing in midfield, We LACK of CREATIVITY and DEPTH. These two players definitely could provide us. With Downing on left ( thank god , long last we signed a left winger ) , and Kuyt on right, midfield is definitely filled with talents.

yap. Im a former man Utd fan. But why in the hell im switching to Liverpool instead? I see the pureness of loving football in Liverpool. Its not about success, (well, its a bonus), its the passion, the history. U can tell all the crap about our rescent downfall, but it will never change our passion towards football and livepool. Thats what football and Liverpool has made us. A much more true FOOTBALL FAN than probably any football fans in the world

Couldn't agree more with your post. I've had this discussion before but most of the time, you come across individuals with tunnel vision. I had a mate as well who used to play for Negeri Sembilan and he told me the ugly truths about corruption in the league. I admire and respect individuals who want to improve despite being in a disadvantageous position. The thing about Malaysian football is I didn't see any effort to improve.

Having said all this I think we're finally moving forward by relying less on state teams for youth development. I think getting the U-23 squad to play competitive matches is key and I think it's paying off now. The state FAs need to be relieved of their archaic practices. There was an article written the other day (can't find it now) and it echoed what I've been saying all the time. Although we haven't won the league title in over 2 decades, we aren't exactly in the gutter. However in comparison with our more glamorous rivals, we have achieved little since we last won it. Now I accept that in football, we like to take the piss out of our opponents. However it leaves me perplexed when I see someone so bitter, they take the piss out of us at EVERY given opportunity. Why don't I get it. Because when I have time, I'm more concerned with our state of affairs. I could care less who the mancs are playing and who they are signing. I didn't give a crap about their last visit here and I didn't talk about it much less direct criticism. I also can't understand why any manc would want to attend a Liverpool training session. I mean I can understand turning up on match day to support the national team but to our training session? You wouldn't catch me dead attending a Man Utd one no matter which celebrity footballers they bring with them. What the heck am I supposed to want to see there anyway?

There can always be a begrudging respect. Like what kazuki said earlier, a lot of it is blind hate. When you blindly hate someone, you don't look past your resentment and you foolishly disregard any positives the person may have. I don't like mancs but I respect some I know because they know a lot.

More importantly, why did you support the mancs in the first place? I am critical of fans who change clubs especially when it involves Man Utd and Liverpool.

Well i was a man city supoorter back in 91 coz i hate my cousin who is a man u fan. But it was short lived cos i saw Macca with his golden locks. I was 6 years old at that time though

Here's come the truth. Before im inspired by Ryan Giggs football skills. 1-2 years following man utd. But more and more, i feel most of the player starting to be arrogant. Especially the dreaded Cristiano Ronalboooo... Starting to get away from man utd from there (even before Ronalboo, i hate roy keane ) Sick of him. Then i try to really getting serious to find my real football club. Im starting to fall in love with gerrard enthusiastic and humbleness in football. Slowly getting know liverpool, and knowing the fans, my heart telling me, this is A REAL FOOTBALL CLUB. Im going thru Liverpool hardship starting Gerard Houlier era, till now. It have been ups and downs, i never been anymore satisfied as Liverpool Fans (even we not qualify for any european cup or winning anything, i still love LIVERPOOL). Its my everlasting love

cos at ur age most that got into EPL goes for that team, so they are still winning which makes it lesser chance for those fans of jumping/switching/changing clubs.

I think I'm in the same boat with vandread86. born in 1986 in a family that adores MU. My parents was and still is an avid fan of George Best and Bobby Charlton, whereas my siblings fell in love with MU during the Cantona era. Being young at that time, I joined them in supporting MU, but only until I was 11 years old. Turned 12, I was introduced to Liverpool by a cousin, and since then, I had been an avid follower of everything Liverpool. I can't really explain why the change of allegiance, it just struck me..the love and the passion of fellow kopites...

I started following the Reds since then while still being a fan of MU, and 2 years later, when I was 14, I totally abandon MU(mind you, that was their prime period, with Yorke-Cole partnership) and started supporting Liverpool wholeheartedly. The reason?I myself is still clueless..

what you guys have done is ballsy, you guys are more 'Legend' then the clueless dude who attended a wrong training session, given the article about why Kopnites love Liverpool even after the elusive EPL after 2 decades! Its about passion & not measured by arrogance of lustier silverware in recent times.

many of the older liv fans may be brought up by the success of the earlier Liverpool years but we became better fans, knowing the rich history, the passion & we stood by the team even in the 'hard times' as the theme goes "You'll Never Walk Alone". this is brotherhood.

Fair play. I highlighted those 3 words because I think it is key for any football fan to do so. Glad that you read about both clubs before making a final (final right?) decision.

I found out something disgusting recently. Friend of mine who got me interested in Liverpool back when we were in school migrated and has lived in Australia for about 20 years now. He was a Liverpool fanatic back then, hence my allegiance. I only see him occasionally and I was appalled to see his facebook postings. Suddenly, he's now a Man Utd fan! I asked him what happened given that the only words that came out of his mouth back then were "Liverpool", "Beardsley", "Rush" and "Barnes". Seems he lost touch with the club (Aussies weren't big on football back then and without the internet, coverage was extremely limited) and as interest in football picked up in Oz. he started following the flavour of the month i.e. Man Utd. ****.

As for me all my life I knew only Reds, influenced by bro. PPl ask me why Liv? just think that Liverpool sounds a chord to me, I like the sound of the name back then .
Back in my times, there's no internet, difficult to source news. Mostly I went for outdated Shoot, Match mags which cost a fortune even though outdated I cut off all Reds related articles & made a Reds scrapbook (2 to be exact)
As I grew, the heart grew fonder of Reds as well, just like falling in love
Then comes internet & all, getting to know Reds becomes easier & it struck me how much it means to us being a Reds. Read all about her beginnings, histories & all. The highs & lows, the tragedies, the achievements, I still cant get enough of her, even now.
SO for some who pronounced themselves as supporters/fans but have no interest in the history of the clubs made me dumbfound.

my gf also said she minat man utd, but not even know the man utd subs, who are their previous player and so on. Kinda sad. Only Liverpool fans know all the legend (at least at the 80's legend). Liverpool truly a Football Club

I would say he is a 'truer' fan than those who claim to be a diehard for many years but then not uttering a single word during the song and those who left early

When Kenny was Manager and Player back then, he used to "turun padang" when we were not playing tat good and the game will change to our favour once he started playing. How often do u guys see a manager warming up to be substituted into a match half way Classic rite?

That moment was priceless for me at bukit jalil and was the one of the highlights of the day other than the entertaining second half.

I dont think any other club can boast of this.I tried looking up for 'glory glory man united at bukit jalil' on youtube and the results were irrelevant

Also i think i should claim some credit for myself as i was the first person to go on ProEvents facebook page and request them to play ynwa and negaraku on matchday

Then more fellow fans echoed my sentiments.Today chelski fans are all over the page requesting to play their song(i never knew they had a proper anthem )

Hahahaha.. I HAVE to come back early as my family need me to pick them up. I love Liverpool, but will not abandon my family in the process. If i have time and no other matter, i would stay untill bukit jalil tutup pagar sekalipun.

I think we come from the same period. To be honest, I only started getting serious the past 10 years or so despite supporting the team for just over 20 years. Without the internet it was hard to get any information at all. Like you said, my only resource was MATCH and SHOOT. My favourite section was the player ratings page because they also included a synopsis of the match.

The fact that King Kenny has returned to the club will hopefully spur younger fans to read up and find out why he's so revered not just because of what he did on the pitch, but also off it. It was nice to see banners like the Spirit of Shankly one at Bukit Jalil. Also, there was one with the faces of Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Houllier and Rafa which was nice. Good that appreciation for the past was shown.

The problem with the "glory glory Man Utd" song is most fans think it's a chant. It's actually a pretty long song. Same applies for some Liverpool fans I know as well. They know the chorus to YNWA but that's it. They don't know the other bits.

Not only was traffic on the roads bad, the human traffic at the bridge near the LRT station was bad as well. Didn't bother driving home immediately after. Had dinner first while waiting for traffic to clear.

i remember when they used to give out those small rectangular roughly 5cmx3cm cards with player info on them, think it was a chewing gum that had it.
then later came those sticker books etc.
and we also had the news of the world annuals also.

btw, we walked around the lrt station bypassing the bridge...its a longer walk but got out much faster.
traffic also we parked at the condos behind endah parade...clear roads all the way

Leave early doesnt mean you are not diehard fan lah,i sang my heart out when the last minute YNWA song that the fans sang before Dirk Kuyt goal ,I left early cause of maghrib prayer

Back then, match and shoot were only rm2.50-rm3.00 per pieces during 1995-1999. I still remember one of the articles,if not mistaken, the joke section about the signing of Heskey. They kept asking Houllier when will Heskey score and Houllier not answering the question.
