Common Kelvin White Balance Settings :
2500K - very strong orange tungsten light
2800K - strong orange tungsten light
3200K - yellowish tungsten light
4500K M6 - flourescent light (most flourescent tubes are green even though our eyes don't see it)
5500K - flash
6500K - daylight (or daylight-balanced flourescent light)
9900K - strong blue stage lighting or evening light

Xenon lighting is rare but that should be between 7000-9000K.

Whenever you enter a new situation that has different WB, just set your Kelvin WB again and test with one shot. You

should be able to do this with practice.

With the Sony A300 and A350, you can use Live View and see the effect of changing Kelvin WB... live!

M = Magenta
G = Green
2500K = Blue
9900K = Amber

Take a picture. Supposing the picture is very Green, you need to add the opposite which is Magenta. If the picture is

too Blue you need to go closer to Amber. So if the picture is very blue-green-ish, you will need to go closer to 9900K

M9.

To prevent the built-in flash from appearing in pictures when in wireless flash mode, you can use any of these

methods, or a combination of them:

- use a darker aperture (e.g. F11)
- use a lower ISO (e.g. ISO100)
- use a shutter speed faster than your flash sync speed so that High Speed Sync is activated (e.g. 1/320th of a

second)
- use a piece of exposed, developed negative film in front of your pop-up flash

Many indoor events in large stage like hall, I have tried using 135mm in fashion show ... but problem in fashion show is when they get close distance ( as they walk from far to near) with it I cant zoom out and it really time catching(because they keep changing post and position some how) ... I know some people can handle 200mm prime (some event photographer I saw they use it) but for me it is a question and how to crop close range with long focal lens? I felt like really bad using long focal lens T.T (as sometimes I was require to get half body close up in long distance)

wingster: just like other sifus said, 85 on apsc or 135 on FF are very nice portrait lens. i think it will suit nicely if u are framing 1 or 2 person in ur frame. if it's a gathering, i think 85 and 135 too tight.

Sigma 30mm and Sony 35mm F1.4 doesn't seems to have good feedback on their sharpness but it still good for portrait and all-round use for the expensive options

Sigma 30mm and Sony 35mm F1.4 doesn't seems to have good feedback on their sharpness but it still good for portrait and all-round use for the expensive options

I would categorize 16-30mm is wide range. below than it will be ultra wide lens .. wink.gif .. I am not using FF, just an a700 ..

CZ24mm f2 will leave a deep whole in my pocket.. not a good choice then at least for me .. haha .. tongue.gif ...

If budget wise for bright aperture Wide Angle I think the MF Samyang 14mm F2.8 lens should good to go other wise would be Sigma 10-20 F3.5 DC HSM or Tokina 11-16 F2.8

30mm F1.4 I think quality and sharpness doesn't be as good as CZ 16-80 (Should read the review and compare on it)

I think you can go for Sigma 28mm F1.8 or Minolta 20mm/24mm F2.8 if you prefer good resolution + sharpness and low distortion

got not so good review on kenrockwell (http://www.kenrockwell.com/sigma/30mm-f14.htm)

QUOTE
Sigma calls this the 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM.

EX: "EXpensive." More expensive than other Sigma lenses.

HSM: "Hyper-Sonic Motor:" Quiet focusing and instant manual focus override. Same idea as Nikon AF-s SWM and Canon EF USM.

DC: "Digitally Crippled." Only works on 1.6x Canon or Nikon digital cameras, not film or 1.3x or full-frame digital. It also comes in mounts for Olympus 4/3 and Sigma cameras.

zstan: You meant SAL1118? The Sony 11-18mm F4.5-5.6 DT is a classic screw-drive lens.

The Sigma OS lenses do come with OS for Sony mount, and can be used with the Sony LA-EA1 adapter on the NEX to be stabilized!

And yes, you can do it too with a decent distance from your lens and a 10 second timer (remote not necessary.)

About your lake shot - I love how the sky is clear while the lake has ripples. However I could use an even balance of both, to cut the image into 3 parts. Also, if you stood at the correct point, you'd have better perspective and a more even line, something like this:

user posted image

wingster: The Samyang 14mm is cheaper and gives you F2.8.

I use bright telephoto primes for events. Once you know your range you can shoot. I don't bring my beercan for event jobs - the 135mm F1.8 does it for stage.

ahpingko: Process the RAW again at maximum resolution and give John Shum the bigger file. biggrin.gif

ianho, that is beautiful!

Seng_Kiat: Long time no see! Yes the Sigma 30mm F1.4 is good. No, E-mount lenses cannot be fitted on A-mount dSLRs.

fansoption: I love where the Drive and ISO button is on the supposed A580. biggrin.gif

Do note that the LA-EA1 adapter does not provide aperture control in video - if it is dark, you might find your videos all being shot at F2.8! So you might prefer to get cjlai's A-to-E mount adapter if you want to shoot macro video because you have full control of aperture.

Note also that you may need a ringlight if there is not enough light... but I am looking forward to your macro videos!

[v]8tvt[/b]: So far no, but Sony does not publish information on the mount so the third-party manufacturers have to reverse engineer.

endless: Congratulations!

lwliam: It is quite obvious since the A33/A55 are so small already that if they released it earlier, some people would have second doubts about getting the NEX.

signither check this out! NEX-5 infrared with instructions!

Plus since it's the second time you can improve on it - John Shum is not going to Photoshop your picture, and if he prints it big, and you walk past it, you will regret not making it better!

fansoption: The E-A mount adapter, if possible, would be an extreme teleconverter with at least 2 stops of light loss and a 2x teleconverter effect. If that adapter does not have glass, then it becomes an extremely macro lens.

Seng_Kiat: I would just tell you to go to the shop and try it. The Sigma 30mm F1.4, like the Sigma 50mm F1.4 HSM, has a very different look.

Don't expect the pictures to look like your Zeiss. It is not a bad thing... but it looks different. If you stopped both down to F5.6 you could probably tell the difference by just looking at the color.

They are still nice and sharp especially in the center, but there is a certain... plasticky look about the colors. It is well saturated though.

I have not owned either lens, though.

about the video mode, i still dunno if take video with small aperture will be dark or not. if so how can we brighten it up ?? (other than use external lighting)
unless using the NEX-VG10 got some dial to brighten it up, dunno what mechanism is that sweat.gif

yeah if not rushing on video should be much prefer to wait the A7xx for better upgrade !! Since A580 quite like the A550 just add on movie mode and some extra small features

fansoption: No aperture control while recording video.

You get aperture control while shooting pictures, though, and as a current SLR, you view the frame with the lens wide open but it closes the aperture down only when you take the shot.

With cjlai's A-to-E adapter, when you turn the aperture ring to let's say F11, you view the frame with the lens already stopped down even if you're not taking the picture. The downside is that the viewfinder may get grainy and noisy in lower light.

mastering89: Yes video cameras have gain. It will still be noisy - or it would give you a black-and-white video when light levels drop.

Professional video cameras also have built-in ND filters which can be turned on or off (it just slides into place.)

zstan: Yes, but nowhere as many as Canon (which is kinda comical considering that a new firmware often is just to fix a bug introduced in a firmware version ago...):

A100 - v1, v2, v3, v4
A700 - v1, v2, v3, v4

basically its the constant f4 aperture....

there's 'baby beercan (35-70 f4)', 'beercan (70-210 f4)' and 'big beercan (75-300 f4.5-5.6 or was it f4.5?)'...

depend how u need it and how concern are u with quality/iq... coz u might end up with proper tele lens for tele purpose. and short zoom for quality normal zoom range uses... (the 16-105 gets my vote)

Lowyat plaza ground floor got 1 shop selling SONY A550 WIT KITLENS + Freebies for RM1999!!!!
please beware it's "pirated" set which means grey set so...grab it if you think warranty won't be a problem.

FotoEdar still rocks!! got the BEST price for A550 body.

When i go shop hopping asking for good price, got 3 idiot salesman asked " sony good meh? y "play" sony? to be honest...sony doesn't make camera."
I straight LOL at them coz i know he dunno shit abt sony. hahahaha

Whole sungei wang+lowyat+BB plaza doesn't have TAMRON 17-50 F2.8 ready stock.
If you guys wanna get please call in to pre-order. thanks.

Str33tBoY : sal16105 FTW whistling.gif
within the 16-->105 range best for me is the minolta24105 f/3.5-4.5(price range <=1.1k ). the sharpness is near or similar to the sal16105 (can some1 clarify this, i didnt compare it thoroughly) but the bokeh is better and it is 2/3rd stop advantage at farthest end. the best for me is the bokeh thou nod.gif
the sal 16-105 not much of a bokeh lens, if doing potraiture of studio shoot is ok la..

stop by at Sony Center KLCC today, sorry for being abit slowpoke here but the pancake + FE adapter is WIDEEEEEE. the CZ1680 on the NEX is also nice laugh.gif

the a33 is small sad.gif

cplow1 : thanks for the info =)

DecDeviL : if i were u i'd keep the lens and fund for <rm500 for a new 50mm 1.8. erm post some taken from it ya, prefer at all focal range at wide open bokeh style

It seems the SLR Magic 35mm F1.7 focuses to 30cm close.

However, it does have field curvature, which means if you focus on a flat surface, the center is in focus while the corners are not, or the corners are in focus but the center is not:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat...97&changemode=1

Also... I have my reservations on this - I'm waiting to see the Samyang 35mm F1.4. We know very well how Samyang's new primes are and, it would work on my A900 as well! (And possibly, a future A55...)

ahpingko: I like your new processing look. There's a certain mood in it.

cplow1: Leos Trading of 1st floor next to the escalator in Ampang Park should have ready stock. Also, the 1st floor of Low Yat Plaza has a fair bit of Sony (Tarita, etc.)

signither: Er just to clarify to anyone reading this, as "reservations" can mean two different things;

"I have made a reservation on this SLR Magic" - I want to buy the lens, and have booked it.

"I have my reservations on this SLR Magic" - I have doubts about the lens. I did not book it. However I will wait and see how the Samyang performs.

Then again it's an easy decision for me - the Samyang does F1.4, and it works on my A900 too!

if you want something like this to a full body shot, that would be 20metres minimum for 85mm on apsc

its so much easier to work with 85 on FF

d4rkholeang3l: Hooray white shirts in rain!

#4 is a bit too low and near. I guess I'd prefer it straight from the front like in #3.

fansoption: If you're using a faster shutter speed than 1/160s on your A550, High Speed Sync will be activated, and that will use a lot more flash power.

If you're using a darker aperture e.g. F22 it will use a lot more power.

So yes, you can expect overheating to happen in such circumstances.

Then? Read the manual.

yuhi: Nicely done! Though for the flowers I'd stop down the aperture a bit to get more in focus.

setting using RAW is a lazy man's way of getting settings right, why not spend more time getting your jpegs WB right in the 1st place and u will save heaps of time in front of the computer. The A100's screen does look a bit warmer.

i agree with yuhi..the set of cables compliments the crow in a way that it makes the surrounding looks deserted..
and its very smart to take the photo in black and white as the crow is black..

Better LCD, Better Sensor, Better Noise Control, Better Grip design, Better Speed(very responsive), Better Battery Life(~950Shots compared to ~500 shots), Better better better... Shutter Priority mode (7fps) or just 5fps burst mode. The speed is totally "uncatchable" by a390. MF Live View~ The handy grip~ The weight~ I wish to own one... Hahahaha......

If you patient enough ... could go for the new A550 successor : A560, A580 or the slightly compact DSLR sizes A33, A55

Hmm... I have nothing but patience... Coz money is very very big problem for me, still a student though. Budget is not allocated, can't do anything also. I wouldn't have such a big amount of money in my account to buy a DSLR too. Waiting for permission from "my majesty"(my mum la...) Hahahaha...

cplow1 : Whoa! Chill dude! Don't get so worked up. Modern cameras now are all very capable devices and can take good pics.

Your A200 is still a good camera. So what can the A550 do that can cripple your A200?

7 fps? Ask yourself how often do you even use your A200's 3 fps?
Cleaner high ISO? Ask yourself how often do you really need to use ISO 800 and above.

If you're not into machine-gunning your subject and don't use high ISO all that much, how much better is the A550's IQ compared to the A200's? If I post 2 great pics, one taken by the A200 and another by the A550, can you tell which cam took which pic?

It is not difficult to get these shots. Don't worry, with enough experience, you will know how to do these kind of shots.

Yes, the F20AM was mounted on the A850 and fired to trigger the two units of F58AM. The Sony's wireless flash triggering system requires a flash (either a built-in flash or a F20AM / F58AM mounted on camera) in order for it to work. It will not work any other ways.

40-50, most ppl set at 45%. its just for long storage to prevent fungal growth... but if u bring the camera* out often, fungus will not grow even the camera is expose to UV or sun for mere 1 sec, or even felt the wind from shutter/mirror, fungus also very picky with their growing area. smile.gif

the power consumption, is erm, u on ur laptop 1 day, u can use the drybox 1 year.

the price looks so cheap for this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SLR-Magic-35mm-f-1-7-M...t=Camera_Lenses

only USD100 and free shipping!

QUOTE
What is really special about this lens is that it is very light weight (~100g) and only has four special aperture blades
. When wide open it produces silky smooth bokeh. When closed down to f2.8 it forms a slightly star shape and photos start to swirl similar to that of the Schnider Xenon lens and the bokeh has a slight LOMO feel to it. When When closed down to f8 it starts to form a squarelooking shaped aperture openning photos look similar to that of the four bladed Schnider Super Angulon lens. It is the signature of the SLR Magic lens and it is quite interesting. A perfectly round aperture is achieved at f2 for the 35mm f1.7 lens so it is great to use as a standard lens as its FOV becomes 52mm on the NEX camera.

i dont think the new bodies(a230,330,380,390,290) have pop up flash button, it is in the Fn mode rite?? if you set to fill flash it will keep on pop-up the flash.

i think the body didnt detect the flash properly, thats why urs keep popping up. for the older ones like a200,a350 it wont pop up even if you set to fill flash mode on A/S/M mode. only on Auto mode and the other custom presets (macro, etc) it will auto pop-up.

or simply change to wireless flash =X

It is not difficult to get these shots. Don't worry, with enough experience, you will know how to do these kind of shots.

Yes, the F20AM was mounted on the A850 and fired to trigger the two units of F58AM. The Sony's wireless flash triggering system requires a flash (either a built-in flash or a F20AM / F58AM mounted on camera) in order for it to work. It will not work any other ways.

Thanks for the reply, can't other flashes work? not even the newer f42am? sad.gif

just to give you a rough price check comparison... do note that this is an SR5 rating post.

650 U.S. dollars = 2 035.79874 Malaysian ringgits
750 U.S. dollars = 2 348.99854 Malaysian ringgits
850 U.S. dollars = 2 662.19835 Malaysian ringgits

this is the RRP.. you do the math when it hits the streets wink.gif

even if you buy it at RRP, and you use 1 year installment, its +/- 200 a month, for a year! brows.gif

8tvt: Your flash contacts are dirty - clean them with your fingernail. It doesn't know there is a flash (you will see no flash icon) and it pops up!

zstan: No, it is manual focus.

Seng_Kiat: Go get a Spyder then. I don't remember which but there is one budget model. Even Apple monitors are not perfectly calibrated as my studio photographer friend notes. Monitors need to be recalibrated every month for optimum color work (though, it won't run much if you don't... but if your work is a critical science of color then you'd do so.)

its not in the sensor, but more on the mirror vs translucent mirror... which means, the mirror box now no longer moves away when you snap a pic (which gives the 'clik klak' sound).. this enables full time video recording AND af is triggered at all times...

previously, when an image is taken, the mirror moves out of the way to let light pass straight onto the sensor... when the mirror moves out of the way, light no longer reaches the AF sensor which is placed at the bottom of the camera... the mirror effectively 'splits' light into 2 paths... 1 into the OVF, 2 into the AF sensor.. this is why now, there's an EVF to replace the OVF as light no longer can be reflected upwards effectively to give a bright view as the 'mirror' is now transparent, or rather... translucent

i see i see.. so constant AF during video mode as well? good for street photography or candid.. since no 'clap' sound.

the NEX3 pancake kit is listed at 550USD and is going for about RM1.7k (street)
the NEX5 zoom kit is listed at 700USD and is going for about RM2.3k (street)

so i guess the A55 kit might be about 3-3.1k when it reaches here

But you've seen the samples on Micro Four Thirds right? It has a fair bit of field curvature even on 2x crop, so the field curvature is going to be more extreme on 1.5x crop. So everything looks like a tilt-shift.

SHOOTING FOR THE STARS: SONY BREAKS NEW GROUND AGAIN IN DSLR SPACE WITH NEW CAMERA, LENSES

Latest α (alpha) Offers Full HD Movie Capture, 3D Sweep Panorama and More

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 23, 2010 – Sony today introduced an α (alpha) DSLR camera (model SLR-a560) that leverages Sony’s Exmor ™ APS HD CMOS sensor to make it easier for active shooters to get the best shot without missing a moment. Along with the a33 and a55 cameras (also announced today), the α560 model is one of the only DSLR cameras with Multi-frame Noise Reduction, Sweep Panorama™ mode, 3D Sweep Panorama and Full HD 1920x1080 60i video capture.

This 14.2 megapixel α560 camera offers the same features of its predecessor, the innovative α550, which introduced Quick AF Live View, 7fps continuous shooting and Auto HDR to the step-up DSLR class.
Additionally, Sony is adding to its already strong line-up of more than 30 A-mount lenses with new models made for seasoned photographers and those new to the DSLR space. Today, Sony expands its A-Mount lens line-up for α DSLR cameras with three new lenses—a Carl Zeiss® Distagon T* 24mm F2 ZA SSM (model SAL24F20Z), a DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (model SAL35F18) and an 85mm F2.8 SAM (model SAL85F28).

“These new lenses and camera show our commitment to the DSLR market and that we will never stop innovating.” said Kristen Elder, director of the Digital Imaging business at Sony Electronics. “These products complement our overall Sony® Alpha™ lineup, which we are significantly expanding today. The camera offers a choice to those consumers who want to gain the benefits of professional level shooting speed as well as be able to capture video with in a traditional style DSLR.”

The α560 camera provides excellent picture quality, particularly in low-light scenarios. A new generation of Sony Exmor ™APS HD CMOS sensor employs low-noise processing for high-quality pictures. The BIONZ ® image processor has color-noise reduction that helps achieve low noise up to ISO 12800, without sacrificing fine detail. Multi-frame Noise Reduction stacks a high-speed burst of six frames, creating a single low-noise exposure that boosts effective sensitivity as high as ISO 25600.

Quick AF Live View

With Quick AF Live View, the α560 camera can focus just as quickly in Live View as when shooting through the eye-level viewfinder, which is unlike any other DSLR in its class.

Because composing shots on the LCD monitor is becoming increasingly important to DSLR users, Sony has equipped this camera with two Live View functions and a 3-inch (measured diagonally) LCD screen that tilts 90 degrees up or down. The α560 has a high resolution 921,600 pixel Xtra Fine LCD™ display.

Sony’s Quick AF Live View uses two sensors to maintain the same focusing speed as with the optical viewfinder. While the speed of Quick AF Live View is ideal for every day shooting, Focus Check Live View enables critical framing and magnification for setting precise focus in macro and tripod shooting.

Focus Check Live View mode simplifies critical assessment of the finest image details. A real-time ‘feed’ from the main sensor can be viewed on the LCD monitor, with switchable magnification allowing close-up confirmation of delicate manual focus adjustments. Contrast AF method is selectable in focus check Live View mode.

Temporary 7x and 14x zoom views enable you to focus on extremely fine detail while the 1x view shows 100 percent framing in the LCD.

Fast Shooting Speeds

With its unique sensor-processor combination, the α560 camera is a leader in its class with up to seven frames per second shooting speed for under $1,000. Using the optical viewfinder, you can shoot up to three frames with Quick AF Live View, which helps you capture the decisive moment when shooting fast moving subjects like in sports.

HD Movie Recording

The α560 α camera offers the extra convenience of high-definition video recording. This model also captures Full HD (1920 x 1080i) video in high-quality AVCHD™ files that can be easily enjoyed on a compatible HD television via the cameras built-in HDMI™ terminal (cable not included). The camera includes built-in stereo microphones for high-quality audio recording.

With multi-shot technology, the α560 camera’s high-speed sensor and processor rapidly captures and assembles many frames to realize unmatched low-noise, extended dynamic range, wide panoramas and 3D images.
The α560 offers versatile creative control even when shooting movies. Creativity is also enhanced by the ability to apply white balance and Creative Style settings, as well as Aperture Priority (A) mode aperture settings, to movies. What's more, exposure compensation can be adjusted even while movie shooting is in progress.

Sweep Panorama Technology

Featuring Sweep Panorama technology, the α560 model captures breathtaking shots up to 180 degree horizontal or 126-degree vertical shots (18 mm focal length).

With 3D Sweep Panorama mode, the camera can shoot 3D panoramic still images with a single lens. The high-speed burst of frames is stitched together using innovative processing techniques to automatically create detail-packed 3D panoramas. These files can be enjoyed in stunning 3D on compatible 3D televisions (other accessories are required).

In-Camera High Dynamic Range

In-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) has been further enhanced incorporating three shots. It can capture highlights, midtones and shadows. Unlike HDR features in other DSLR cameras, Sony’s unique positional interpolation technology can overcome slight changes in camera position and align individual shots so that a tripod is not required.

The feature handles severe backlighting and other high-contrast scenes like looking out a window into bright daylight. The in-camera auto HDR technology combines the highlight, midtone and shadow detail of three separate captures into one remarkably natural looking image. The α560 offers a maximum Auto HDR range of 6EV.

Multi Frame NR is a new function where, when the shutter is released, the camera automatically takes 6 frames at the currently selected shutter speed, aperture, and ISO setting, and then combines them into a single JPEG image with a reduction in noise at the selected aperture and shutter speed that is equivalent to approximately two ISO steps. In addition, ISO expansion achieves class-leading, ultra-high sensitivity equivalent to ISO25600, while accurate subject detection assures high-precision alignment of the 6 frames during compositing.

Lenses for Active Shooters

Made for experienced and budding photographers alike, the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2 ZA SSM (model SAL24F20Z) functions as a wide-angle 24mm lens on full-frame cameras with 36mm (35mm equivalent) lens sensors, or as a 36mm equivalent lens ideal for general use on cameras with APS-C sensors. Jointly developed with Carl Zeiss, it features the highly-regarded Carl Zeiss Distagon designed for wide-angle lenses.

This lens is distinguished by its fast response focus and extremely quiet, very smooth operation thanks to its built-in SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor).

It offers a wide and therefore highly versatile focal range from 0.19m to infinity, and features a nine-blade circular aperture that along with the large F2 maximum aperture contributes to smooth, natural bokeh effects.
In keeping with traditional Carl Zeiss design, the all-metal lens barrel has been finished to a very high standard resulting in a visibly high-quality appearance.

Offering photographers at all levels great value and performance in a compact and lightweight design, the new DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) weighs just 6 ounces. It can be added to a lens kit system and carried without noticeably increasing the weight of the bag.

With an approximately 50mm (35mm equivalent) focal length on an APS-C sensor, this lens is ideal for snapshots and portraits under a wide range of shooting conditions. The high-speed F1.8 maximum aperture is particularly advantageous for hand held shooting in low light.

At just 0.8 feet, the DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) has the shortest minimum focus in its class, making it an excellent choice for dramatic close-ups too. Whatever the shot, the internal Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) drives the focusing group directly and ensures responsive and fluid autofocus operation.

The new 85mm F2.8 SAM (SAL85F28) lens is a full-frame lens in that offers performance and affordability. The 85mm focal length is a standard for portraiture because of the natural perspective that it provides. On an APS-C sensor camera the 85mm F2.8 SAM functions as a 127.5mm (35mm equivalent) telephoto lens – and features a Sonnar-type optical design that is considered ideal for mid-range telephoto lenses.

The lens is sharp center to corner, and features smooth defocusing thanks to its large F2.8 maximum aperture and circular aperture design. At two feet, the minimum focusing distance is the shortest in its class, and SAM motor technology ensures smooth autofocus operation.

The quality optical and mechanical features of the lens mean it is suitable for serious photography and should more than satisfy intermediate and advanced users alike.

Pricing and Availability

The α560 model with the camera body and 18-55mm kit lens will cost about $750 and will be available in October. With the body only, it will cost about $650. The Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2 SSM (model SAL24F20Z), DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (model SAL35F18) and 85mm F2.8 SAM (model SAL85F28) lenses will be available in October for about $1,250, $200, $250 respectively.

The cameras, lens and a range of accessories will be available at Sony Style® retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail) and at authorized dealers nationwide.

Maybe in A33/A55 the battery consume would be lower than NEX ... hopefully xD

But 1 draw back ... Still NO MANUAL CONTROL on Movie mode(Which is all the rivals HAS it) ... =.= for hybrid video/photographers is still a little frustration but at least it let more room for some other control

10fps got its limitation. for one, u cannot control iso & shutter speed. so if shoot fast moving objects, still lose to the canon 1d m4. of course cannot compare la.

Imagine a FF pellicle camera with 24mp and double BIONZ processor capable of firing at 10 fps in full resolution + shoot HD video, BOTH with fully operation phase detect AF mechanism..... STIM wei.....!!!

Only thing I hope that they sort out by the time they come out with the FF version is the accuracy and speed of the AF mechanism. If it proofs to be as good or better than the Nikon's 51 AF point 3D tracking system, that will pawn everything.....

p/s: price it cheaper than the A850, please..... since no more ultra bright pentaprism and no more expensive motorized mirror box required.

tonight go home sure cannot sleep lah! laugh.gif

According to the information on the internet, the mirror will remain stationary during operation. It will only be flipped up for cleaning purposes (when you want to clean the sensor). Actually this is one part of the design which I don't quite understand. Why do you need to design the mirror to flip up? If Sony can design the camera such that the mirror remains stationary during operation, might as well completely seal off the sensor so that no dust will reach it (hence no dust cleaning required!). Wouldn't that be more practical? hmm.gif

For sure C & N will not stand still and if they see this technology taking off big time, they will want to develop their own versions of this technology. Remember that Canon had used the pellicle mirror camera concept before (long time ago, during film days), so it is not something new to them. Just a matter of bringing the technology up to date, like what Sony had done.

from my noob opinion, dust is really really really small. no matter how u seal it, some how or rather one or 2 particles will still manage to squeeze in. over the years it might build up. so if u completely seal it, it will be really really hard to clean if dust ever gets in. maybe sifu albnok can provide a more concrete answer. blush.gif

wat the hack.......

- Imaging Resource: “The Sony Alpha A55V, the version sold in the United States, has one standout feature not present in the A55 and A33: a built-in GPS receiver. This allows both still images and movies to be automatically tagged with information about the location at which they were recorded.”

We really do not know how they design the mirror box. Maybe they are making it possible to change the translucent mirror in the future (mirror accessories)? I don't know.

Argument is that if you can seal it well enough (in design), then there are less chances of dust going to the sensor, and there will be less need to clean the sensor. Maybe you only need to clean the sensor once a year instead of once after every outing, and you only need to send it in to Sony service centre to have it cleaned up (or Sony providing a mirror removing kit for cleaning purposes).

Maybe there's no need to clean the sensor but how about the translucent mirror? Don't forget that light does pass through it... Dust on it will also affect the image outcome. Maybe it's time for them to change the anti-dust system from sensor to the mirror. lol

i am also hoping it will be weather proofed like the 5dm2 if the FF pellicle were to come out....i am sure that will cause a furore in the professional photog world . icon_idea.gif

another one....

- Luminous Landscape: “And finally, there is eye detect, so that viewing switches between the LCD and the EVF automatically as you raise it to eye level. ” and “There is a Achilles Heel though, which needs to be understood. PDAF (phase detection autofocus) is done with the lens at its widest aperture. This means that if you want to shoot video with PDAF you lens will always be used at its maximum aperture.”

I cannot imagine on future A7x and even the FF A8x/A9x? with 10 FPS and tons of features .... but still hope they develop the manual control on video features for at least their semi-pro camera which can give more freedom of filming while snapping photograph xD (As myself need a handycam hybrid....)

hmm. maybe a fully sealed mirror, yet easy to be removed with the proper tools?  laugh.gif

i am also hoping it will be weather proofed like the 5dm2 if the FF pellicle were to come out....i am sure that will cause a furore in the professional photog world .  icon_idea.gif

gosh, technology really moves damn fast la. really hard to catch up.  rclxub.gif

from my noob opinion, dust is really really really small. no matter how u seal it, some how or rather one or 2 particles will still manage to squeeze in. over the years it might build up. so if u completely seal it, it will be really really hard to clean if dust ever gets in. maybe sifu albnok can provide a more concrete answer.  blush.gif

a55 compare to my a300
- video capabilities (none on my a300)
- faser fps (3vs10)
- better iso control (up to 12800)
- better af system (more af points and even better than a300)
- smaller and lighter than my a300
- less buttons
- evf vs ovf : better or worse??
- latest exmor cmos sensor better than my a300 ccd

So, should i put my a300 on ebay now?

Dinosaur(dunno how many millions years ago) vs Doraemon(The only thing i can think of, which came from future)...
Doraemon sure win la... Btw, dpreview did comment on the evf. Go read it out. It's 1.14M dot... and packed into such a small size. I don't think our bare eyes can notice each pixel in it. It should be quite ok gua... My assumption... Dpreview say it's big, brighter bla bla bla... Something like that. finish the whole review.

Find on eBay, since it comes out earlier in the states.

Like wingster's a550 black edition, got for a steal price in China.

Must go there and buy buy buy! biggrin.gif

Hong Kong/China would release sooner ... but too bad cannot bring in with bulk lar .. sure kena heavy tax wan + no warranty also :< better charge your money and purchase on local safer (UNLESS the price is like heaven or hell then is another story)

Just download the sample A55 RAW file and have a look ... I would say the high ISO all have suffer the lost of detail compare to Canon ... it was like give a good clean image rather than quality ... but competitive against rival through (in terms of clean noise)

question: does the quick video AF only works with SAM lens or all A-mount lenses including the screw driven ones?

I think not ... as AF on motion video require much faster motor in order to get in focus smoothly and screw drive lenses might turn out louder and slower to focus ... IMO

The speed of AF on screw drive lenses depends on the body, not the lens (well, to some extent, it also depends on the gearing of the lens itself). Sony's screw drive AF speed is quite good (depending on which model of alpha, of course) so I think the AF speed should be OK. It is the noise generated by the screw drive mechanism which we should be worried about. Even the SAM lenses are not known to be quiet.....

SSM will of course be silky smooth and quiet. *hehehe*

Well AF might also in hunting as well when it cant track the target ... also not every time the AF works well as the DoF will cause it jump focus often. So need some knowledge to handle it as well

Also what is Shutter Lag by the way? I realizes more on video that the A55 needs to have longer shutter release time ... and yeah 10fps ... 50 seconds time buffer?

24mm that one is the Zeiss la...

Somehow, I think when I get my hands on the Pellixes, I wont have much of a big WOW reaction as I did when I 1st saw/touched the NEX. Mainly because the new features, when concentrated on, they are just as normal as other cameras out there, taking pictures and videos. The WOW factor comes in the form of "I know this will ease my job of taking pictures (and now videos) by a whole lot compared to any other dSLRs out there at the moment, including the camera that I own now". And best of all, I know I can use all my lenses on that body without the need of an adapter like the NEX and still having full dSLR functions in it. So at the end of the day, its more of a peace of mind, rather than "wow, I've got a new gadget" kind of expression.

Some people need it, some people don't as in your case, you don't find that range appealing to you. Well, some people would love that range on an apsc for portraits and product shots.

Hmmm, how can I put it. It's more like, you will know when you need it when you know you need it. Else, its going to be pretty much a white elephant.
