This is about milestone not milestone 2. I hope u are old enough to differentiate between milestone thread v2 and milestone 2 (which is unconfirmed anyway).

If u consider your patience will pay off by waiting then I suggest u wait another 3 years becos by then u will get 5GHz cpu and DSLR quality camera.

The only downside for milestone is its picture taking, if u have enough light then the pictures turn out fine. Under low light condition or indoor, the image looks abit hazy and the led flash doesn't help much. Any update on image quality in froyo?

Looks solid to me tongue.gif But if give me a choice, I would go for the Droid X drool.gif Coz I don't need 2 phones with QWERTY keyboard.

Yea real crappy pics in low light. Froyo update will remake the camera UI, hopefully they can do something to the pic quality too.

Just to share.
I can use the MotoNav now as it is full version.... rclxms.gif

Just to tell, the official MotoNAV is taken from iGO8.
It is just special version for Milestone.

After I uninstall the build-in MotoNAV and get the * version iGO/MotoNAV.
It's work!! rclxms.gif
Sadly the most update map is dated 2009.03.... sad.gif

And I had hard search for the 3D Buildings & POI for Malaysia... cool2.gif
To say that, Out station location is pretty crappy & less details as I can say... brows.gif
As you can imagine the 6.7MB iGO map is how details you can get.

Think they won't update anymore.

If you are in Europe/US, then iGO is great!!!
They got the most complete collection of map for the whole world that I think...

You have to root your Milestone.
Because uninstalling Official MotoNAV is quite tricky as Milestone had the lock script under \data\data folder that unable to install the other than Official version of MotoNAV.
(Of course, if you not rooted, you can't delete lah... rclxm9.gif )

Be reminded you can keep the voice files etc. that installed from official MotoNAV in your SDCard.

MotoNAV: http://www.multiupload.com/XDB3WA2D9Z
iGO8 Map & 3d Buildings: http://gpscomputer2u.blogspot.com/2009/08/...-maps-0903.html
iGO8 POI: http://www.4shared.com/get/238990642/e3832a31/Malaysia.html

Be reminded backup your MotoNAV.apk before your Uninstall. In case if failure, you can still get back your Official MotoNAV though. smile.gif

Motonav is a preinstalled app in milestone, thats why we need root to remove it. I mean remove the 60 days trial version and replace with the *** one, without the activation thing. The map coverage for malaysia is around 54%, most new roads wont be in the map i guess. Not until iGo release a new version with new maps.

The best satnav right now would be the papago m6 but i understand that it only have chinese menu?

One difficulty is, how to key in the Alphabets to search for Destination in Papago M6 is the major issue.
As in Papago M6 Taiwan modded, only Phonetic Character Input, it doesn't have the alphabets input.
So you can't search the place, and even the POI is Taiwan places too.

The 2nd is, even the map modded from MFM, but the place icon will not shows correctly as it.
I think they had mentioned this in other LYN thread. smile.gif

The 3rd is, Papago M6 can't rotate in Landscape.
That is big down side.

Then i guess motonav is a better option, tho I hate how the location search works. It felt like buying movie ticket, even tho the queue is empty u still need to go zigzaging thru the lane biggrin.gif

Shouldn't be a problem since ur UK sbf is working in here. I'm using 2.34 on a HK set. And I can say that the alarm bugs are gone and my random restarts have also disappeared biggrin.gif

Then i should just flash my ms to the 2.34 hk sbf.
Those random restarts and alarm bugs are so irritating.

Thank for your great remind!! rclxms.gif
Yes!! It can search for Alphabetical destination!!
Just by turn off the Phonetic Input, I didn't notice that. blush.gif

So the last issue is just the representative icon in the map.
& it can't rotate to Landscape. rolleyes.gif
And only Chinese Interface, that some people have to remember the Menu.
For Road Simulation, it can't PAUSE like iGO.

So Papago M6 + MFM map rocks! rclxm9.gif
Got junction view too.

Many thanks to you, Kenny.

Since I changed to Launcher Pro, no need for Launcher.apk anymore.

Then i should just flash my ms to the 2.34 hk sbf.
Those random restarts and alarm bugs are so irritating.

My GREEK Europe set also flash to HK SBF too. rclxms.gif
It runs great & not facing any reboot.
Just experience once when I replace the System file (modding of course).

See the code down the IMEI

eg:

SM,A853,ES,RETAIL,LICBRZ

Tell us the highlighted part
like mine is ES so it means ESPANOL, so it is an Europe set

99% Buying the MS this weekend! rclxm9.gif

Just a few questions I have before I actually make the purchase.
1. For MS users who are using the Matte screen protector, I have read in the past replies that the Matte is not really sensitive. How do you guys find it? Worth buying?

2. Does a MS require a data plan? Would it be okay if I only used Wifi? Since my whole college is wifi, it would be pretty convenient. I have a limited budget and if it is possible, I wouldn't want to take up a data plan since the minimum is RM50 for Maxis and any extra usage would be charged a bomb! Wouldn't wanna risk it.

3. This would be my first smart phone and I was wondering is it user-friendly? I tried using the MS over the weekend and I was kinda a noob. blush.gif
Would it be easy to operate? I am on a semester break right now so I will have a few days to experiment with it. Good enough?

4. Any thing that I should know of before I purchase this phone? Anything that I should be prepared to face?

Please icon_question.gif! Want a few last opinions to convince me to get the Milestone!
Thanks! notworthy.gif

1. no issues at all. However, if you're using the epikcase clip on case, then there might be some difficulties. My set is naked now. And it is so much more slimmer now. laugh.gif

2. Depends on you. If you have wi-fi access most of the time in your life, then you can forgo the data plan. Those "smartphone without data plan thing" is plain bullshit. In the end, it depends on the user, where the user will be at most of the time and etc.

3. My first smart phone is the P1i and trust me, a smart phone from 3 years ago is so much nastier.

4. Some random bugs like alarm clock not functioning, sometimes the playlist wont close after you plugged out the headphones (have to lock screen > unlock screen > then press home then only will close) but everything is just pretty minor. Not much major problem. usually just restart the phone solves it all.

notworthy.gif Thanks!

I am planning to get the Capdase casing. Any idea whether it is any good?

I will most probably try having no data plan for a while and see how I will survive. I have never had a data plan ever, so I think I will survive. But most of the applications can function without any data plan right? Some would just need wifi am I right?

I have 3-4 days with the phone, I think I will be able to figure things out but I would most probably be posting questions here, please do aid the noob me when the time comes! icon_question.gif

You can sync via gmail. Whatever you create/edit in your gmail contacts will automatically sync real time to your MS and vice versa.

Whatever contacts you have have to be save in .vcf file then you import everything to Gmail contacts. Once you've set up the sync in your MS
with Gmail your contacts will be all there!

Good luck!

ndrive 10 looks quite good, seems better than current motonav in our milestone. the app itself is free but u have to pay for the maps. for 20euros u get the latest (may2010) maps for brunei, malaysia & singapore. probably i'll buy it to replace motonav.

My Gmail & company email had been running without any hiccup so far. But I had the phone for only less than 2 weeks. Everything is still rosy. By the way, my screen protector is the free one that came with the phone. Just cut off the tab, and voila! Free screen protector. Talk about me being a cheapskate.... tongue.gif

Hi guys,

I not sure whether u guys ad know bout this or not but i didnt see it in the topic so i think i would like to share.(sharing is wat ANDROID about)!

I've never used a HTC phone b4 but i think that the stock screen keyboard for MS just not so good. then i accidentally found the following website that enable MS user to use HTC keyboard.
I know with the physical keyboard of MS it's pointless to have on screen keyboard. but for lazy ppl like me who sometimes don like to flip out the keyboard, this HTC ported keyboard is excellent.
Well ever since i installed this, i seldom use the physical keyboard of MS even for long sms. ^^

http://www.droid-life.com/2010/03/29/downl...e-keyboard-v19/

if any of you know that there's ad a newer n better version, kindly let me know can? thanks.

ps: in my opinion, i can type faster using this HTC keyboard compare to swype.

laugh.gif I was being careful when I got the phone. Anyway, I'm using a leather slip-in cover the ms. The cover was originally meant for the iPhone. Hahaha.... boleh pakai jugak ni. Nice quality stuff that I got off the open market. Like pasar pagi kinda stuff. The outside is leather (or so the seller says lah) and inside was layered with a layer of soft felt cloth. Outside is dark tan leather color with some leather patterns, and inside is red color. Pretty nice case for RM29 onli.... tongue.gif

I found the Capdase case here http://www.lelong.com.my/capdase-smart-poc...0-06-Sale-P.htm

I don't understand why the case can show digital info? Is it got built-in electronic board inside the case?

I can't find the XDA thread with custom skins download anymore, not sure if they had taken it down or it's still hidden some where in there.

Hi, your iphone case really can fit the milestone properly without any loose?
*
Sorry, might have confused you. It is not one of those snap-on casing (like the Otter), but just a simple slip-in sleeve type cover. I like these more than the snap-on hard casing as they are simple, light and maintains the thin profile of the phone. And yes, it fits quite well without any loose.

[quote=oneeleven,Jun 20 2010, 08:43 PM]Got Swype and I think it works more smoothly than Shapewriter. It is very good at guessing which word you want even if your thumb/finger is a bit off the mark. The pop ups take up too much screen space when I am in the middle of something.

I am keeping HTC Touch on standby though. How long is the trial period?

Got update? I don't see one. Try reinstalling?
*
When I looked at Market Apps it listed all my apps and installed all available updates. The others didn't give so many problems.

Yesterday I did reinstall it and powered on/off to be sure, and it kept FCing again. Did another reinstall, TODAY OK shakehead.gif (?!?!)

TQ anyway. Now I've added GS Bar app to complement it, and am very happily using GS again.

Well, I'm using it and YES you can do search using alphabetical input. Check under settings.
*
Papago M7 is now released and it can go Landscape.
As for the POI search, to enable normal English keypad to appear, need to go to the Setup page,
count to item No. 8 and change the default setting from enable to disable.
Then we can search for POI in the MFM map/POI.

Just wanna ask which task manager / killer are you guys using in your milestone? I'm using the "Advanced Task Killer" found in the Android Market. Just wondering if there are any better apps that fellow users are using.

I think auto memory manager is essentially an auto task killer, since it has to auto kill apps to free memory. I get lousy battery performance when I use auto memory manager.

installed the multi-touch keyboard. now i can type as fast as typing in iphone.

the multi-touch keyboard is a system app, i think it will be the stock keyboard in all future moto phones. not sure if it will install in non-rooted phones. in my case, i have the stock moto keyboard and the app wont install. after i removed the stock keyboard then only it can install.

stock keyboard comes preinstalled in milestone = Motorola Keyboard
stock Droid X keyboard = multi-touch keyboard

correct me if i'm wrong. any non-root user manage to install the multi-touch keyboard? perhaps non-motorola phones can.

Apparently there are some bugs in this port. My multitouch kb settings are reseting by itself at certain occasions. It's supposed to work for non-rooted Droids, maybe there's some problems in non-rooted Milestones

Droid X boot animation confirmed working too!!! So awesome! rclxm9.gif
But I can't get the boot sound to work sad.gif

For those who wanna try the boot animation (both root & non root):

1) copy the bootanimation.zip & android_audio.mp3 into ur androidsdk/tools folder
2) then on Command Prompt cd to ur androidsdk/tools folder
3) and:
CODE

adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local
adb push android_audio.mp3
adb reboot

4) watch and be amazed! biggrin.gif

XDA

*NOTE:
1) Please do a backup first just incase. I'm not responsible if u get a black boot screen or if anything happens to ur phone tongue.gif
2) I do not have the backup for the original boot animation, if u want to revert probably have to google for it. Don't think I will revert anyway since this is so nice

Yup the & symbol is the same here, getting &amp instead. And 'less than' symbol doesn't work as well, getting & instead.

Thats fine with me, i dont relly used that symbol that much. Vibrate is working but hsnot always, i still prefer without vibrate.

There's a guide to remove stock apps, but make sure to backup ur system apps first:
QUOTE
1. from the command line (current path must be tools dir of SDK) run:
      adb remount
2. make an empty folder on your HDD (i'm going to call it android and put it in the C: drive so it's location is C:\android )
3. Then run:
      adb pull /system/app c:\android
4. All your applications are backed up for use later!

then:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581635

The Droid will be getting Froyo at the end of July, hopefully we get ours by then too

to delete the shortcut, just press and hold on your widget (with your finger ofc) then drag it to the bin on the navigation bar.

What do you mean by getting started? Maybe you should start by configuring your email accounts? Sync your contacts to gmail and then sync to your MS. Get a screen protector. Get a cover. Charge the battery full..... tongue.gif (just kidding)

QUOTE
2. What applications are a 'Must-Have'?

Must have apps depends on what you need. For instance, I sometimes communicate with people from around the world, so it is a good idea for me to have a world clock so that I don't wake people in the USA up at 3 a.m. in the morning to discuss about work.....

QUOTE
3. How to fix the alarm bug?

Do you already have the alarm bug? I had not had the alarm bug hit me yet, and I had been using the MS for about 2 weeks now.... Touch wood I won't get the bug. But I was rather annoyed with the "unplug the earphone and music player autostarts" bug, which I read so far cannot be cured unless the phone had been rooted and the music player removed.

Help very much appreciated  notworthy.gif

Not much of a help, I think, but I guess that is all I can do, since I also just got the MS about 2 weeks ago.... sweat.gif

All above bugs can be fixed by flashing to the HK 2.34.3 sbf, no root required @ page 1

im not sure if this will solve the 'unplug earphone - song playing' issue, but can anyone confirm it?

- download MortPlayer Music from the Market and check both options under Headset menu.

this player will replace the stock app (and its better also). so far no autoplay happens yet when i unplug the earphone.

Original plastic sheet on new Milestone screen:

QUOTE(V12Kompressor @ Jun 22 2010, 08:25 PM)
Mine got peeled off after barely two hours I got my phone.
Perhaps its caused by mt tight jeans. So, those who wear tight jeans/slim fit jeans beware.  laugh.gif
*
Mine just pulled off after 4 months cry.gif I had only yanked the phone out of my jeans pocket when it was in a pouch, but the other day I carried it "naked" and the sheet rubbed off. I really miss it because it was pretty good at keeping the screen free of fingerprints. So now I need to ask you for recommendations for one that is transparent and does not slow down the touch function.

Another reason the pouch is good is that the rubberized back can make the battery cover come off when coming out of tight jeans. I think the new slimmer model will be too fragile for me!

Hi MS gurus,
I have been a smartphone user for quite sometime. My current phone is Sony Xperia X1, not sure how to describe, the quality is bad , I bought it during launch and it costs me abt 3k. Now I will not buy Sony or HTC (HTC made the Xperia). So my choice is now down to 2 phone. Iphone and Motorola Milestone , which I think have a very good hardware. Recent problem on the iphone 4g antenna makes my choice even easier... Motorola it is. No doubt HTC or Sony make good phone but I prefer to go for good built quality. I have a question that requires answer before I make my final decision :

1. I am a heavy user on Exchange email, exchange calendar, gmail, gmail calendar. How does droid integrate to all of these apps. I know it supports all but how good is it?

2. How good is the MS keyboard? Owning an X1 I have changed keyboard 3 time during warranty, due to quality problem and miss typing. After warranty I did not change since it costs money to change. In the forum it requires at least 6 month servicing/ cleaning. Does MS users have problem with keyboard... like keys not working etc.

3. X1 really lags due to memory. How does MS perform, does anybody experience lagging and/or frequent reboot? CPU enough power or faster CPU will be better?

4. Anybody can comment on the sw / hw build quality? I heard that the 1stgen droid cover can easily come off , and in the US they give a replacement for free. Does it happen here? Does brightstar replace it for free?

My choice now really down to Droid/Milestone 2 or Droid X... hope gurus can help to give comment.....

for smartphones its hard to determine or measure how long the battery will lasts because it depends on how the user use the phone. i can say my milestone can last for 3-4 days if i use it as a phone, but it will only last for 5 hours if use hsdpa and heavy browsing. telco signal strength also affect the battery consumption, the lower the signal, more battery juice will be used to get the signal.

amin_bp:

1. never tested exchange, my company didn't provide the feature.
2. i dont use the keyboard that much, so far its working fine. but there are cases with the keyboard backlight not working. i think u need to play with the actual thing for few minutes (typing email, sms, notes etc) and see if it fits u. milestone keyboard received a lot of complaints mainly because of the design. buttons are a bit small (to make way for the d-pad) and they are not raised like other good keyboards. u may not be able to type fast (because u cannot feel and remember the buttons placement) but it gets the job done.
3. milestone has only 256mb ram, so if u put a lot of widgets on the home screen or have many apps running in the background, it will surely lag. but so far for me it is acceptable, not reaching the 'annoying' level of lag yet. but there are other phones out there having 512mb or more ram and still lags.
4. hardware quality is excellent. motorola really like metal stuff. that is why most motorola phones are heavy. do not drop it and it will last or protect it with some casing. i dont know about brightstar. i myself using starhub set. there are issues with software, alarm bug, music auto playing but i think it will be resolved in the next update. u can fix it now by flashing some files though. i've experienced a reboot once, that was during the phone running at 1GHz and i was tethering using hsdpa connection. the phone got too hot and it reboot itself. if im not mistaken, the design of milestone put most of the chips at one place near the camera. the phone will get hot when we use 3g/hsdpa connection or overclock it.

actually the signal issue on iphone4 is quite exaggerated. there are ppl who has no problem using it.

Sanosizo..
Thanks a lot for the comment.. I guess there are not much complaint on Milestone and I heard that Droid 2 has a lot of improvement from original droid, hopefully Malaysia can get the Milestone 2/x as soon as it launched in US . I am not really worry about the sw as it can be patched or upgrade, as long as the HW is good its fine. I was really pissed with the hw problem on xperia, and really envy the good old days where manufacturer make good phones that can really lasts. Hopefully I will not regret the choice I make when they launch milestone 2/x...

Will update the list later including new owners . The existing list is taken from V1 thread only tongue.gif

Maybe your touch screen sensor got problem d? It's normally caused by the screen grounding issue.
I normally experience touch screen problem when I charge through wall socket.

Manually flash using RSDlite...2.36 is actually the latest European release while 2.34.3 is the latest HK release. Both should work on our sets. Other sets like Canadian, Brazilian sets etc are still at 2.31, which means that their Motorola haven't issue updates for them yet.

Seriously just wanna know:

People say "laggy" all the time. How exactly to judge if a phone is "laggy"? What is it that is happening or doesn't happen?

Hey people! Need some help again!

I am trying to use the MS without any data plan at the moment, only relying on Wifi. The problem is, I can't seem to download any apps from the Market through Wifi, my downloads will state that its starting and it would take ages and it never starts! The wifi port is just in my room.
Is it normal to wait quite long?
Or would I need a data plan to download apps?
Or can I download it to my computer and transfer it to my MS?

Another problem I am facing is my credit is being drained!
I am currently using:
Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile networks>Use only 2G networks
There is a icon with a letter 'G' at the top next to the battery.
Is that causing me to lose my credit?
What can i do to avoid losing credit? I wanna only use Wifi if possible.

Updating can settle the alarm bug? Just go to settings>about phone>system updates?

Please and thank you! notworthy.gif

Woohoo!!! Updated to 2.36!

And yes my MS is not so laggy anymore!
I dunno whether it's because all my apps have been wiped so I have more memory or it's cos of the update...

One thing I noticed besides the the HQ for youtube app is that the Water live wallpaper now ripples when u touch the screen!!!

If all apps have been wiped sure la faster laugh.gif All South East Asian sets should have the 2.36 update already. Yep, since build 2.34 they fixed all the bugs, including the water ripples effect in the LWP.

Mine also has problem getting apps thru wifi but that probably caused by my messed up system. Normally factory reset will fix this kind of problem. Good thing android use memory card, makes recovery from factory reset or flashing a lot easier

Just updated mine to GOT starhub 2.36, with black theme and overclock to 720 (with voltage locked to 56v) during boot. So far so good, the muffled sound during voice calls now solved, hopefully other bugs are gone as well.

Flash your phone with the service version so that all your apps n data are intact. Hopefully froyo is just around the corner smile.gif

GOT's black theme looks nice drool.gif Overclockable up to 1GHz at stock voltage? Sounds awesome! Did u try 1GHz?
Moves dalvik-cache to /cache too. Been trying to do that lately without success, hopefully this will work, gonna give it a try later

hi all.

i'm planning to get myself an android phone this month..currently i'm struggling whether which android phone should i get..
still choosing around in between milestones, nexus 1 and desire..
which one do you guys recommend??

like milestones so much because of the qwerty keyboard but i heard the news of paint peeling off from the camera button and also the 'echo' sound when making/receiving calls..software/firmware buggy or not i am not sure..

for nexus 1 it can firstly get froyo update in this planet but i kinda don't like the design and also the trackball..

desire almost same spec as n1, works great in sense ui function but i gotta feeling that it will get froyo update very very late...

can anyone please choose for me?? sad.gif sad.gif

mine is AP set and the paint on the camera is still nice. My nails is quite long also.

Only some sets will experience echo sound but a simple software update will solve the problem. My set initially suffered this too but the problem is non existent anymore after a week of usage. Magically disappeared.

If Nexus 1 already get Froyo update, rest be sure that the MS will be the second phone to get it coz our MS is running on plain wanilla Android. Exactly same interface with the N1.

Didn't managed to get it running at 1Ghz, maybe the voltage is just not enough. Mine will freeze during boot animation, didn't try both 800 & 900 either because i think 720 is snappy enough. Even running at 650 phone is quite smooth. Currently testing 720 for any random reboots.

Same thing happen to my HK set when I was at 2.31. I only managed to update by manually flashing the sbf. U can use the South East Asia 2.36 or HK 2.34.3. I'm not sure wat are the differences between the two, but both versions definitely fix most of the MS bugs like alarm, random reboots etc.

I'm doubt that Droid X is it will launch it in Asia or not, you can see gsmarena.com don't have details yet and it seems published by USA verizon company which specially made for verizon to USA customers just like HTC EVO 4G.

the boot animation runs twice when im running the phone at 650 or 720. then its ok.

just wait until it finished loading. if it took too long, probably a good idea to remove the battery and try again.

I believe the Android robot logos are done by using the App organizer or Folder organizer app which allows the use of custom icons

bar on top left is not a signal bar, its the taskpanel app. so far stable running at 720. back area not that hot compared to last time when on 2.31. everyone should update to 2.36, a lot of issues have been fixed.

I've been using this home screen before flashing 2.36 and GOT theme actually. Its a collection of custom icons that i got from some1 in nexus one thread, then i used bettercut to put the icon on the home screen. Should be fine with folder organizer as well but i never tried.

I'm not sure why you got ; when pressing ? since its working fine on my phone. Did u get the same issue for other keyboards?

Wat I know is that both version fixes the common MS bugs, beyond that I dunno.

I'm on 2.34.3 too...gonna try and see later if the GOT's theme will work on 2.34.3...don't want to flash to 2.36 till I know wat else it fixes

i flash mine with service version too, i did the backup just in case (only sync contacts to gmail and sms using 'sms backup n restore' app). after the flash, everything is still intact. i can say its safe but just do a backup, just in case biggrin.gif

but i think all your phone configs will be reset to default. good luck then.

Upgraded to 2.36 via RSDlite last Friday. All the phone configs, apps and data are retained if you use the Service sbf. Got one reboot last night when exiting Google Market. Otherwise, it's been pretty stable.

No more autoplay music thumbup.gif

It was the same for me. Checked every few days, then suddenly it downloaded. (???)

Afterwards, Swype stopped working, so far cannot reinstall even following directions for 2nd beta.

Message is that my phone is NOT ANDROID !!!

Flashing sbf doesn't root your phone. There are additional steps to run if u want to root it.

Download ringdroid extended to assign custom music as ringtones.

Battery cover decals wont last long, probably only takes a week to fall off if your phone going in and out of pocket a lot. I actually like the back screen decals but for $7 a pop, its quite expensive. But its nice to have mikey greetings the person in front of u when u slide the keyboard out biggrin.gif

Added on July 7, 2010, 5:12 amDetails of the update - http://www.droid-life.com/2010/07/06/motor...s-mr2-5-update/

Hopefully it applies to the 2.36 update that we had. Or perhaps there will be another update?

Flashing sbf in this case is just updating ur firmware, the latter part which flashes the vulnerable recovery sbf is a pre-requisite if u wanna root when using the official sbf files. But if u use GOT's sbf then it already includes the vulnerable recovery.

im not lucky yet to get update 02.36.
mine is GB set. always late GB set to get the update..hehe
lazy to flash manually as bz rite now.
if i later update non service version, will it delete all the install program and contact in MS? i think want to get fresh new installation as free space currently low as i install and uninstall program.
i want to ask, do android totally remove all file if we uninstall a software or still leave the folder and some file in internal memory ? how to check the leftover file and can it be remove?
can use android-sdk-windows to do that? as i use to install the DroidX boot animation using android-sdk-windows way.

Did u mean u dun want to lock the phone when u press the on/off button?

If that so then u can try the phone lock settings inside location n security options. Set the phone lock to pattern or password then set the security timeout to few minutes. This way it will only ask for unlock pattern or password after the specified timeout time, if u press the on/off button to turn off the display, pressing it again wont give u slide to unlock function.

of course it will. but if u do nandroid backup before the rooting process then u just need to restore the backup to unroot it back. (i'm not sure this is the right way to unroot becos i never tried)

another way to unroot probably to flash a new sbf file. make sure to flash the correct one.

all i can say, rooting is a safe process. just dont brick the phone.

What are you saying? That there's still risk of bricking the phone in the process of rooting, but as long as you don't brick it, it's safe? blink.gif

by bricking the phone i mean doing crazy modifications after you root the phone.

getting root is a simple process. as easy as pressing a few buttons and select an option in the menu and you're done.

when u have root access, all the system files will be accessible or modifiable. if u get adventurous, u will start modifying files to suit your need. but then it is actually quite hard to brick a phone, unless u saja-saja go flash a firmware which clearly not for your phone.

If you flash with GOT modified firmware then you don't need to install vulnerable recovery because its already inside the package. Vulnerable recovery is needed if you flash the original motorola firmware.

brand new ori set costs around 1.9-2k, i cant believe if used ori set can go that price, unless the seller really desperate for money or he/she didn't know that 1.2-1.3k is for the ap price. if its really a used ori set then good for the buyerlah.

The ori set is selling for Rm1.8k retail in Gadget Arena. I'll rather get the AP for RM14xx with 8gb memory by our forummers here. haha

Get a prepaid plan then, no monthly commitment

If you want to keep it a while and want less hassle reloading etc, pay the RM$30(?) annual fee. It can be done from *100# if you have enough loaded in, maybe RM$30-40 You will probably get bonus points for free SMS too.

If you flash with GOT modified firmware then you don't need to install vulnerable recovery because its already inside the package.  Vulnerable recovery is needed if you flash the original motorola firmware.
*
then its mean, can directly root from GOT file. so easy like that..
but, if later want to update 2.2, is there any issue ? like have to use ori firmware, than only can update ?
like now im still using 2.31 coz got GB set. no 2.36/2.34 update for GB for now.if use GOT, still can update 2.36 later?

If you want to update froyo in the future just flash the stock firmware back but make sure use the service version to keep your data intact. Most GOT have 2.36 already. Rooting and unrooting now very easy to do. Salute to the people who has done a great job simplifying the process to normal users like us.

Anyway I'm enjoying typing with swype at the moment biggrin.gif

Its available for Milestone as well.

For some AP sets, especially from ES (Europe), you have to download and flash it yourself. smile.gif

ya, it is available for Milestone.

i tried it a couple of times when using UK sbf but now UK still using 02.31, which is with all the bugs.

Is SEA 02.36 sbf got the speech to text function too?

You can either root your MS or wait for the 2.2 froyo update.

If you can't wait any more longer than just go ahead and root you MS and do the apps2SD.

You should know that rooting your phone mean you are going to void your warranty.

And do a nandroid backup before you start rooting your phone.

Anyone having the "running out of storage space" issue when receiving incoming mails? At first i thought it's due to the emails not being able to store automatically to the SD card and froyo update will fix it. But i have some friends using MS as well with the current firmware as mine and they are not facing this problem.

I'm using SEA 02.36 sbf. I do have the speech to text thing. I don think it comes with the 2.36. the reason i have it is coz last time i downloaded it from a website(which i forgot the address ad).
But the speech to text i never use coz it does not work well with malaysian accent. i think it'll only useful if u can speak like amo...
if u interested in the apk, you can mail me i can email it to u.
pm me if u wan the apk.

finally, i have made my decision to get milestone instead of n1 and desire..
just got it last week from one of the seller in garage sale..
this is the 3rd type of smartphone i've been used after symbian and linux..
the building quality is still so nice for motorola phones..it reminds me of my previous E680i..

I put this in another thread and might be missed by somebody having the same problem with Swype Beta:

" I finally got around to emailing my IMEI to them. Today I as soon as I plugged in to PC a pop-up said update from Motorola. After going through whatever it was (Android remained 2.1 and MS 2.36, new MotoConn) I tried to reinstall from previous email message. IT WORKED ! So now Swype is up and running again. I don't know if it is another beta version - 1.56.30.7625.t100 "

you should hv vibration now when u receive any new notification or sms.

Currently there are already 2 milestones available.

First the motorola milestone (With slide out keyboard)
Clock @ 600mhz
Ram @ 256mb

Second there is motorola milestone XT720 (No keyboard)
Clock @ 720mhz
Ram @ 512mb, but according to moto dev website, it states 256mb. Unless you find someone who has torn it apart, no one can really confirm it I guess since motorola understands and knows that android 2.1 only supports 256mb. And with droidX in the pipeline, android 2.2 release on the XT720 may not be the major concern for them. And although they probably will release 2.2 on the XT720, it will not be the flagship handset of their android line. This may be purely a marketing move on moto's part.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

You can download ringdroid and handcent SMS, using both you can make your own ringtone/notification tone and handcent you can make your own vibration pattern.

I hope I can clear things up...

1. original milestone runs at 550mhz with 256mb ram
2. Milestone xt720 got 2 versions but I believe only 1 available at the moment, the one that runs at 550mhz with 256mb ram
3. There are news about europe version getting down spec from 720mhz/512mb to spec same as no.2

android 2.1 support only 256mb? Care to share where you get that from? Did you know that droid x runs on android 2.1?

It has 512mb built in, but it won't get all 512mb.
I am using galaxy S and it only detects 256mb.

http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html

It's the kernel that makes it so, not so much the OS version.
I only said 2.2 because it definitely comes with the kernel that supports high memory.

Yes, I do know that droidX runs on 2.1 at the moment, but this model is supposed to be their flagship model now and 2.2 upgrade looks to be in the pipeline for it as well since it has the added ram.

that's sux. knowing that your phone has more memory but you can't use it, apart from nexus one owners I guess. galaxy s is a very fast phone, seems like it's using the same cpu as the droid x.

I guess x10 owners would be very angry with this limitation, since the phone has 384mb ram.

*
That page doesn't actually say that 2.1 supports up to 256mb of RAM only. The N1, Desire, X10, Evo etc all have 512mb RAM and I never heard/read anything regarding the lack of RAM.

Maybe it's Samsung's problem?

Probably you don't read all of the contents but efuse already existed even in droid and milestone. So far nothing happened to those phones.

We might not get custom firmware but root is possible.

There is a reason why motorola lock the bootloader. More people with custom firmware means higher risks of bricked phones, thus more warranty claims. I hate their decision on this but when you compare the ratio between users like us and mass market users like our uncles or sisters who are not going to explore the phone like we do, it's a better approach in term of business.

actually warranty is not the reason for motorola to lock the bootloader. coz once u root your phone, your warranty will be void. HTC n other android phone did not lock their phone, and i'm sure alot of those phone had been bricked but we don hear issue ppl complaining claiming warranty from HTC. coz for those that flash their rom, they know the risk.

llobak,
Please edit the Rockplayer link when you "quoted" me. I was informed by another forumer that the earlier forum link I added discusses appz... Thank you.

JunkieG,
Please help remove the link as well. Thank you. By the way, watching 1280x720 resolution mkv on a 854x480 screen is a bit overkill IMO tongue.gif

Also check if you have widgets that is always syncing data (facebook, weather... etc). I am using Juicedefender and set to turn off 3G when my screen is locked. Can last 1.5 days on a single charge.

Check battery usage under settings to see wat apps are draining ur batt, then kill it off. I occasionally have "mediaserver" eating away my batt level for no apparent reason, and have no way to check wats causing it so I had to reboot my phone. Easiest to check is to plug in ur charger for a few seconds then unplug it. Leave ur phone idle for 5-10 minutes then u can see which app has the highest percentage of usage for that period of time.

If u have Astro, u can see wat processes are taking up CPU cycles. It can be very handy actually especially to check if the app that u have already backed out is still running heavily in the background (Market reacts this way for me sometimes), then that's the process u have to kill

Leaving GPS on will not drain ur battery if u don't have any apps that use GPS positioning. I leave it on just in case for apps like Where's My Droid & Lookout

With average use my phone can last bout 2 days per charge at stock speeds, with the help of SetCPU profiling biggrin.gif

thats the downside of having a touch sensitive buttons. maybe u can try an app called pro paint camera. with this app u dont need to push the camera shutter button, just touch the screen and it will auto focus. it takes pictures quite fast if im not mistaken.

1. download open recovery files. i recommend getting the GOT latest version here - http://www.multiupload.com/ORHI6UI34W
2. in the zip file there will be 1 folder (openRecovery) and 1 zip (update.zip)
3. copy both files into your root sd card.
4. power off the phone.
5. press camera shutter + power button. when moto logo comes up release the power button but keep pressing the camera shutter button, until you see the triangle image with an exclamation mark, release the camera button.
6. press volume up key then press the camera button. this will give you a menu.
7. use the directional pad left or right to navigate thru the menu. select apply update.zip then press the center button on the pad.
8. it will load the files needed until you are presented with this menu - http://groupoften.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/1_main.png
9. choose nandroid menu then you will be presented with options for backup (system, data, all) or restore.

there are other interesting stuff in other menus, but be careful not to install them without knowing what they are for.

Why Milestone 2nd hand price dropping so fast? Anything to complain about this phone?

Couldn't be dissatisfied by Android since the Nexus and Desires are holding up well. Build quality? Keyboard not nice to type? Processor not fast enough?

There's an app called "Quick boot" which is really convenient if u tend to reboot ur phone alot. It has the options to do a normal reboot, boot into recovery and also the bootloader. All without the pressing of volume & camera buttons etc biggrin.gif

U guys should try it especially if u play around with the GOT mods alot, or just for quick & easy access to recovery for nandroid backup

If u flash the sbf from GOT then the vulnerable recovery is already included, so no need to flash it

Do u mean by applying the update.zip file from stock recovery? If that's the case then it's actually a requirement for u to load the update.zip else u will only be in the stock recovery. It won't automatically boot to the modified recovery

mine is working fine at the moment, with GOT theme installed and running at 800. tried 1ghz but will reboot intermittently, probably not enuf voltage.

u guys noticed any difference with the JIT thing installed?
*
The script that came with the 1.04 release didn't work. So they updated it in 1.04a, I read in the comments section that it worked but it disables root at the same time.

One guy release his own fix, I tried but was getting unstable benchmarks in Linpack, from 1.xx to 6.xx (without JIT is 4.xx) Thus I disable JIT for the moment till they come up with a proper fix.

Look for post #3 to try the custom JIT fix

Guys,
will the Milestone get Froyo update?...Really wanting to get this phone. Froyo update news is the only thing holding me back. Droid-Life & AndroidandMe blog sites are not that optimistic about it as well...damn!!

This is the response i got from Moto...sad..

yesterday i had my hands on an iphone 3GS, sad to say that although 3GS has the same processor speed with MS, seems like the iphone is smoother if compare with our MS. nvm la, android still better

and 1 more thing is, iphone keyboard is so much better than any keyboard that i've used. I've used : HTC, shape writter, better keyboard. but still feels that the iphone keyboard is better. any1 have any other suggestion for keyboard that can at least on par with iphone keyboard?

ps: i still love MS. just hope to get wat is good in iphone and port it over to android to make us better.

i agree with you on that. really missed the smoothness in iphone when changing to milestone. but having to depend on a pc to transfer & download things (not to forget - doing backup) made my decision to move to android even tho i got a brand new 3gs that time.

have u tried using the droid x multi touch keyboard? its not as smooth as iphone's but it's a lot better than other android keyboards out there.

This is kinda like the million dollars question now.

Some speculations saying that it will receive the 2.2 Froyo update, some say no.

But IMO, the Droid is receiving the update in next month or so, hence i think MS will also get the 2.2 update.

If u had the app installed b4 the latest update, then u should still be entitled to unlimited tags. Bonus for old time users from the dev, it was mentioned in the update biggrin.gif I had mine installed long ago, so I assume I still have the liberty to unlimited tag, haven't reach 5 tags yet this month

Swype it's not even a paid app, so I don't see it related to piracy

Moto Europe still considering updating the MS to 2.2. Wonder wat our Asian/HK Moto are thinking, no news from them at all. Hopefully they are busy readying the update for us

After having know that milestone may not get froyo2.2...i'm totally fed up wih motorola company...i saw other europe forum stated that if motorola didn't provide froyo2.2 they will have a lawsuit against motorola since they stated that milestone is flash-ready and demand for a full refund~

Added on July 23, 2010, 5:50 amand i found another problem here~anyone notice that brightstar malaysia website is gone ard?

if not normal that means your milestone isn't capable of taking pictures edi.

But yeah, the camera is only good when there are very good lighting condition. ANd by very good it doesn't mean decent.

well, just put it in this way.
You buy the Milestone is NOT solely for the camera purpose.

As long as it serves the purpose of taking a picture as a quick reference, it is acceptable for me.
