apart from less 20GB to 40GB, only 2 usb port and doesn't support ps2 games,
is there any other different(beside the $$$) between 40GB and the 60/80GB one?

^ you already listed the difference of the new 40GB. early impressions indicate the 40GB runs a little cooler and less noisy and have lower power consumption.

i dont think its a glitch... i dono... tv is Phillips 47 inch... using HDMI cables... i think it has something to do with the auto-adjust for the resolution... from 1080i to 1080p or something...

why don't you try to just set 720p only. disable 1080i and 1080p and test if this will happen again.

there's some cases called HDMI "hand-shaking" where the device need to communicate with the display, causing screens adjustments.

Hi convict. I'm also using HDMI to connect my PS3 to my Dell 2407WFP. smile.gif

For the audio, you need to get yourself a Y-splitter cable. Like this:
user posted image

Then, connect the composite cable to the back of your PS3, the red and white audio to the Y-splitter, and the other end of the Y-splitter to your speakers. That's it! laugh.gif

Just ask any computer shop for it. Must have one. Only RM10 I think. Good luck! thumbup.gif

anyway...you guys really save me from blowing a hole in my bank.

was so excited when I brought home my ps3 only realize there is no speaker out from the monitor, so got to settle for the stupid AV cable and the graphic look like PS2, dam kau depress......bought a component cable but still not as nice as HDMi.....the only solution is to buy a LCD TV, cos is already in the pipe line for the full HD one (cos still want to wait for the price to fall further), but got no choice untill decided to post it on this forum. And Wala! every thing just fall into places. HDMi with sound.

Seriously, you guys really did help me save alot of money.

Thanks again. dont mean to thanks so many time, cos Im a happy man for now.

Hi guys,

I have fw questions that I put up in the other thread. Wonder if you guys could help me. See below.

Thanks!

QUOTE(aiman04 @ Nov 24 2007, 11:33 PM)
Hey Gurus,

I have done a lot of search through the internet, and learned a lot of things about PS3. But this time I have decided to ask my new friends here instead.

My PS3 is 2 weeks old, but now my HDD already filling up 50GB of the available 74GB space. So, I'm thinking of backing up now by upgrading to a bigger HDD.

Now, from my research, I am pretty much confident already to do the hardware exchange, the HDD is a normal Seagate SATA 2.5" 5400rpm.

But I have few questions to clarify before I do this.

1. I'm seeing that there are SATA-2 HDD, is there any difference, can PS3 use it? Also, can I use 7200rpm?

2. Because of the big data to backup, I need an external disk at least around 60GB in FAT file system. I know Windows can't format bigger than 32GB, but I found a software that can do it (http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197). The question here, can PS3 detect an external USB FAT drive bigger than 32GB?

3. The backup utility will keep all your game saves, pictures, videos, songs, but not the XMB, ID settings, etc because they are stored in somekind of a BIOS like memory. Now my understanding is, it will backup the demo games too, but not the purchased ones because of copyright thing? So I need to re-download my purchased games again? And I can re-download them as many times I want through the same PS3, but on diffrent PS3, 5 times right?

4. Downloading through PS3 is quite slow compared to my PC, can I re-download my purchased games using my PC and transfer to the PS3 (using the Folding@Home proxy link replacement method)? I mean, my PS3 must have been activated when I purchased the game in the first place, is it not?

It's been 2 weeks of extensive research about PS3 for me. Found a software that can extract AVC.h264, convert the audio only, and remux to create a .MP4 files from my .MKV HD videos (even splitting the file at 4GB if it's too big, PS3 have problems for videos >4GB playback, plus FAT can only store 4GB each file). If anyone wants it, you can get it here, http://sentry23.googlepages.com/. The software is fast, about 10 minute for a 3 GB video. This because it doesn't do any converting to the video because it's already in AVC.h264 format, it only remuxes it to the .MP4 container so that PS3 recognizes it  . But it mostly works with 720p videos only, even though some 1080p can be successful too.

I have also found a way to download PS3 demo games from PSN using my PC, using proxy to intercept the F@H download link. And learned a fair amount of stuffs about PS3 and purchasing games from US/JAPAN/ASIA PSNs using CC.

So, this time for these 4 questions I'm wondering that any of you seasoned PS3 owners here can help me, I'm kind of exhausted already.

Thanks!

I got no idea rgd this question. If anyone has tried and tested the proxy method for re-downloading PSN purchases, please confirm the results.

Thank you so much for your helps. Also tabik to everyone here too. I also learned a lot here too.

Now I'm going ahead to upgrade my HDD, maybe get a 5400rpm to be safe. Swissknife, I'll google that.

About video playback? YES, we can play videos at its native 720p resolution, even 1080p.

I found two programs that are quite reliable to do it. I'll try to write about it a little bit. Might miss something, as I'm wrting from my memory.

PS3 Video 9
Recommended for remuxing .MOV Quicktime HD Videos

http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/

Can convert almost any video files to PS3 video formats. But converting big and long vidoes will take a very long time for HD videos at 720p or 1080p.

So they also provide a profile to extract AVC.h264 video and it's audio (it will convert the audio only if needed) from .MKV or .MOV (Quicktime) files, and then remux the video and audio together again, but this time into an MPEG-4 video container that is .MP4. This will take only about 1 minute for file that will take 50 minutes if you do the normal conversion. To use this don't use the wizard, but use the "current conversion" tab instead.

MKV file - Select "MKV Passthrough" method.
720p - Works 50% of the time.
1080p - Never work for me.

MOV file - Select "Quicktime HD MOV Passthrough" method.
720p - Works 95% of the time.
1080p - Works 95% of the time.

I still use this program to convert HD movie trailers from http://www.apple.com/trailers/#section=justhd which you can get 1080p trailers with awesome picture quality. And PS3 will play it that same native 1080p resolution!

GOTSent 0.23 Beta 6
Recommended for remuxing .MKV Matroska HD Videos

http://sentry23.googlepages.com/

If you don't already have it, you'll also need these two filters:

AC3Filter Haali Media splitter
http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

AC3Filter
http://ac3filter.net/project/1/releases

Doesn't do any conversion, only remuxes .MKV files to MPEG-4 video format for PS3. Very fast.

Just browse for your .MKV file, it will extract AVC.h264 video and it's audio (it will also convert the audio only if needed) from the .MKV file, and then remux the video and audio together again, into an MPEG-4 video container that is .MP4. This also take only about 1 minute for file that will take 50 minutes if you do the normal conversion.

Plus one extra feature, it can split your video at 4GB if it's bigger than that, because of 2 things. First, if you transfer the file using USB external FAT32 HDD, you can only put files no bigger than 4GB, second, I read reports saying that PS3 has troubles playing videos bigger than 4GB.

MKV file only.
720p - Works all the time.
1080p - Never work for me, but can be successful for high profile h264 videos.

Really reliable for .MKV files. I have download a certain 7.5GB .MKV 143 minutes video with 720p resolution, used this program to remux it, took about 15 minutes. The video was split to two 3.6GB .MP4 files. Transfered using my USB HDD, and the video played gorgeously at 720p resolution!

OK. Here it goes.

After you launched PS3 Video 9, click convert, and then current conversion.

Click on "Convert video" to browse for your file, for example Quicktime HD movie trailer, Transformers_trailer_1080p.mov.

In the profile (inside "new video to convert"), select "Quicktime HD MOV Passthrough". Then click "Start".

user posted image

The remuxed video will be save on the location that you can set in the "Settings" area of the program, and go to "Devices" > PS3.

The same is true for .MKV videos, only you need to select the "MKV Passthrough" profile.

But like I said in the previous post, for .MOV videos, most of the times it works, but maybe 5% don't. If it don't, for a short video like a movie trailer you can do a full format conversion instead, choose any of the profiles that suits best. It will be much slower though.

And probablity of success for .MKV videos is much worse, so I suggest that you use the GOTSent program instead. Works all the time for me for .MKV 720p videos.

Download the latest version here:

http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/

The GOTSent program is for MKV videos only. It is really easy. Just browse for your file, set destination folder, leave everything as default, and click convert.

http://sentry23.googlepages.com/

Maybe you need to install these first:

http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

http://ac3filter.net/project/1/releases

My method here doesn't change the video resolution, frame rate, etc at all. It just take it as it is and put it into an MPEG-4 container. So the picture quality remains as awesome. Hope you get it to work.

Anyone using Samsung 2232BW or 2232BW with their PS3? I'm planning to get a 22' LCD monitor, but i'm not so sure whether it'll work with PS3 or not. If there are better LCD monitors to recommend, please do so too. Thanks.

Finally, I have upgraded my HDD to 160 GB.

I bought the Hitachi 54000rpm SATA HDD at LY for RM290.

Backing up (32 GB), formatting, restoring, all took more than 2 hours.

All my downloaded games, demos, purchased restored OK.

Thanks everyone for your tips!

Yeah, but Seagate is a little bit more expensive though.

I used the original PS3 HDD as my portable external HDD now.

Tried to connect to my laptop to see the content, but apparentlly PS3 uses a whole different formating itself. It is neither FAT32 or NTFS so Windows see it as unformatted.

I formatted the old HDD as NTFS now, I have checked out PSN forums saying it won't void the warranty. It was designed to be upgraded. No worries anymore.

Oh, yeah, I know about that. Forgot to mention I partitioned the old HDD to 2 partitions, one as FAT32 and the other one as NTFS.

Tried with PS3 as external, PS3 can detect the FAT32 part of the HDD. No problem. I can use it to transfer files to PS3. nod.gif

Yes, it can. My other HDD that I used to backup the PS3 also had partitions, no problem. But of course, only the FAT32 partition, not the NTFS.

I got a question; i cant seem to goggle it off

Apparently to play PS2 games via ps3, i need a ps2 memory card adaptor and a memory card?

Is that true?

This is a fresh game with me having no game saves on it at all.

hmm.gif i read somewhere that the reason Japan PS3 is cheaper is because they wan to build up the user base in Japan 1st...becos the games r more expensive in japan n Sony earn the profits from games n not consoles....

official launch in Malaysia - may be a quiet one just like PSP n PS2? sweat.gif unsure.gif

We were also waiting for the official launch in Malaysia, but cannot anymore.

Just last month I asked the staffs at the Sony Wing in KLCC about it, even they don't know about it.

The rumour I heard is that they will launch PS3 in Malaysia together with the new DualShock®3 sometime next year.

It can be played with an HD ready 720p TV, which will be converted to 1080i.

Only full HD TV can display at it's native 1080p.

3 hours? That's too long. Remuxing technique shouldn't take that long. What is the duration of the video? I have done it more than 20 times, all ran perfectly fine. I used the program for a 4.3 GB, 100 minutes video, took me less than 2 hours. I have also done it for a 8.2 GB, 143 minutes video, took me less than 3 hours, even that maybe because I also split the output video to two 4 GB MP4 files.

Do you have enough HDD space? The program will create files with the total size equivalent to the original MKV file. So to be save, ensure you have free space at least double the original MKV file. If you doing split, better have 3 times the size.

Or, was the video 1080p? Because as I stated in my post 1080p video is not guaranteed to work. Even if you successfully remuxed to MP4 using GOTSent, the most common case is that you will hear the audio but seeing black screen when played in PS3. But there are still some cases that it did work. These are mostly for high profile h264 AVC.

Which comes to your next question. The level 4.1 and 5.1 in this case is NOT the audio channels. The program will convert the audio to 2 channel AAC anyway because as of the current firmware, PS3 can't play multi-channel audio MP4 yet (I think so, haven't tried since the 2.01 update). The 4.1 / 5.1 here refers to the AVC.h264 main profile. This is the technical part of the codec, no need to know further about that as the program will do it for you. Do not change any settings in GOTSent. Just browse for your MKV file, set the output destination, if the original file is bigger than 4 GB, toggle on "split", and click "convert" and that's it.

Hope that will help.

If not mistaken you can do that through manual connection setting in PS3. Not sure if there's extra steps to do, like setting the router etc.

Never bothered to look because I don't really mind about my PS3's IP, always use automatic.

What I did, I disconnect the power cable for the modem and/or router for 5 minutes, and then re-connect. Worked for me.

Maybe backup utility. But it will backup everything and when you restore to different PS3 than the data on that PS3 will be removed. OK, not a good choice. Plus game saves are unique to each ID, you must have same ID for the other PS3 too.

Not sure about region, should be OK I think.

Or you can just take your HDD to the other PS3 and swap.

Anyone got idea?

My guess is the console's region.

ID is definite. Tried it. Different IDs showing different progress.
Swopping HDD, too much of a hassle.
The funny thing is, under Game Saves Folder, the file is there.
But it just doesn't sync with the game.
No option to continue.
Always just Start A New Game.
Weird ....

Yeah. The only thing I hesitates that the shared PS3 must keep my ID. I know I will change the password, but still, still feel uneasy. sweat.gif

But come to think about, I still willing to do it, if the other person is willing to share his purchased games too. whistling.gif

Here's a little tutorial on how to download demo games through your PC, and install them into PS3.

Game links also included.

This method, you need to sacrifice your F@H. But this is the easier than the Store method.

Here's how you do it:

OK, didn't see your post. I have upgraded mine to 160GB HDD. All my game saves are backup perfectly. In fact, everything. Purcased games, demo games, pictures, video, songs, etc.

Except your IDs and system settings, those are saved internally on some BIOS like memory on the console itself.

one question about the folding at home method

Do we have to delete the game we downloaded using the F@H method , before we can use the F@H method again to download another different game?

Nope. No need. After game installation, the file will be gone already, and you can start downloading the next demo through F@H.

thanks again. another really simple but critical question, say in the future when and if my ps3 crashes for whatever reason, I reboot it by holding down the power button at the front of the console for two seconds, then press it again for five seconds ?

How exactly do we reboot? I know it is bad for the console if we switch off the back switch while the LED is green.

That happened to me once or twice.

I just hold the power button as long as it needed until it turns off.

Then I turn it back on, everything back to normal.

I have no idea, just make sure it has HDCP support otherwise you can forget about that monitor.

Anyways, how the heck do I open a new tab when I enter an address manually in the PS3 web browser? I dont know how to open a new empty tab, is there even such a function? Typing this from my ps3 now.

well about the only complaint about the ps3 now is that the browser tends to run out of memory pretty easily. You cant open a video flash, some websites even refuse to load up. Saddest case is www.ps3fanboy.com. Website for ps3 but cant even load with a ps3 browser. tongue.gif

Yup, one of my biggest disappointment as well, same goes for pspfanboy. They do have something for mobile, http://m.pspfanboy.com which lists 5 latest news but unfortunately news only appear in headline form and clicking on them bring you to the full (and ps3 incompatible) version.

Been using www.gamersyde.com a lot recently though, for all their 10 minutes thingy. And I also managed to make a Play-Asia.com purchase.

^ when buy ps3, u get composite AV cables, correct? the red/white PS3 composite cables carries the audio out signal. the green cable in that pict is ruzty's speaker input cable.

y-splitter is used to match the PS3 red/white OUTPUT to speaker INPUT.

note: if you have a speaker set/system that accepts red/white plug, then just plug & play.

EDIT: yes, the composite cable also called AV cable.

A couple of questions before upgrading my hard drive:

1) The backup utility will save backups as a single file or multiple files? AFAIK FAT32 only supports 4GB for a single file and how this is handled by PS3 as I think my resulting backup file will exceed 4GB..

2) Are the profiles/gamesaves/etc2 will be backed up by the utility? I have a few profiles in my PS3 (friends' & housemates') and I afraid the profiles/gamesaves will be lost after upgrading..

3) How about my linux partition? Will it be backed up as well?

thanks

1) Multiple files.

2) From my own experience, game saves is backed-up. Don't know about others though. Purchased games also backed-up perfectly, can restore to same PS3 unlimitedly, and to different PS3 up to 5 times. Profiles/ID will not be backed-up, because those are stored in the PS3's built-in memory. So if you want the same ID in different PS3, you have to re-create it.

3) Sorry, no experience.

I have upgraded mine to 160 GB, all went fine.

NOTE: You'll need an extra external HDD for the backup though. You can't simply use the backup external HDD as PS3's HDD. Backup to a FAT32 external, swap HDD with the new one, format, restore, done.

Concerning number 2): So that means gamesaves for different profiles all can be backed up and restored on the same PS3 without recreating the IDs?

On the same PS3, yes. It did back-up for me.

In other words, there was no different whatsoever to my PS3 after the HDD upgrade. The only difference is the HDD size.

Hope it will work for you to.

Hey guys, I got a 50'inch Sony TV, here is the spec.

http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/P...oductId=1003131

However, it's not in LCD, so I am wondering whether if I am able to play PS3 in Full-HD. Or maybe worst, not HD at all? (Hope this is not true)

@Xaphier, your TV supports 720p via HDMI - its good smile.gif

Meh.... so it's not Full-HD after all. Oh well, can't blame it for that, it's already around 3 years old anyway. Oh by the way, 720p and 1080p/1080i has huge difference?

Sony 3LCD is expensive to maintain. last time I checked with Sony, each lamp cost above 2k, and it has 3 lamps attached inside tv.

52-inch lcd tv above 20k

^what brand/model LCD you using?

if u use HMDI-DVI cable, just set 480p and 720p in the PS3 display setting. i don't understand why you are getting 576p. 576p should be PAL signal.

Yes, true. The lamp could not even last more than 10K hours. Better opt for plasma or LCD TV.

Bro, sorry to jump in like this, and sorry for the noob question. sweat.gif Would like to ask. A widescreen PC LCD monitor basically has an aspect ratio of 16:10(compared to a widescreen LCD TV which is 16:9), rite? So, does the image usually appear stretched for the LCD monitor? Is it too obvious? sweat.gif

On the same PS3, yes. It did back-up for me.

In other words, there was no different whatsoever to my PS3 after the HDD upgrade. The only difference is the HDD size.

Hope it will work for you to.
*
I made some mistake during the restore process. I choosed "Restore PS3 System" from the menu and it wiped all my user/accounts/settings.. However after the proper restoring process (from the Backup menu" all the lost/reset data was restored.. So the system really backs up user data hmm.gif .. I created an OtherOS partition after installing new HDD, however after restoring process, the partition seems to be lost.. sad.gif

It will be stretched slightly if the monitor does not support 1:1 pixel mapping since the aspect ratio is different. However it is not that noticeable (well at least for me)

What your PS3 region? You can use the following direct download link to download the update file:

(Asian Region)

http://dsa01.ps3.update.playstation.net/up...58/PS3UPDAT.PUP

Put the PS3UPDAT.PUP inside your thumbdrive/Memory Stick under PS3/UPDATE folder. Then, on your PS3 select System Update through Storage Device.

Most people use Asian update, the one that I just posted. And, it does not effect your PSN account registration. In fact, you can create multiple accounts; whether its Asian account or US account. You can use any region to logon and play online multiplayer. No restriction.

I've stumbled upon a problem..

Restore utility will not allow users to have an OtherOS partition.. It will wipe the OtherOS partition on the new HDD eventhough we partitioned it before restoring.. Anyone knows a workround for this?

Obviously the OtherOS partition never backed up. Got no experience with this.

You need to re-do the partition and re-install the OS.

Try to see the PS3's original HDD on your PC, maybe you can see the OtherOS partition (as it should be FAT, but not the PS3 partition though, it's of totally different file system) and try to retrieve your data.

Yeah I know the OtherOS partition is not backed up. And PCs cant see PS3 and its OtherOS partitions as they are both encrypted and proprietary. However, IF we really want to use Linux in new HDD, we cant use the restore utility. We can only choose either to

a) create OtherOS partition
OR
b) restore from external HDD

The restore utility will just wipe the OtherOS partition created in the new HDD before the restoring (even though it is empty) and will leave the HDD with a single PS3 partition. It's like an endless cycle: If we want to repartition to allocate 10GB for OtherOS partition, the data in the HDD will be lost. After creating the OtherOS partition, any restoring process will result in a single PS3 partition again..

PS2 Eyetoy works only with LIVE chat, not with PS3 Eye apps/games.

I found out the hard way. Will buy an EYE in Singapore in near future.

try searching for a new 80GB Asian set. 20/60 GB Asian or JPN sets also can play NTSC/J ps2 games, but hard to buy new, can get as 2nd hand mostly.

for testing ps2 backwards compatibily, i recommend SotC NTSC/J

if connect ur ps3 to ur normal tv u use the cable wit 3 color rite? yellow, white, red. (yellow for video, white red for audio)
just unplug the yellow cable from ur ps3, leave the white and red color remain plugged. then get a Y splitter (refer page 1) so that this two audio out will bridge into one input to ur pc speaker. remember to select ur audio type with XMB.
get a HDMI -> DVI cable. just connect ur ps3 wit ur LCD via the HDMI port and DVI port. done! tongue.gif

the splitter very cheap only. less than rm10
it's either wont affect frame-rate or the reduction is too small for me to get noticed.
so far so good wit game like FIFA08, ghost recon, assassin's creed tongue.gif

Yes. PS3 can connect to DVI while the computer connects to VGA. There's a input switch button to switch between these inputs (for 2407, you will have VGA, DVI, S-video, composite and component, so be prepare to push a few times to cycle through the inputs).

yeah, currently hooking up the ps3 to the lcd using HDMI to DVI cable. as for PC, i am hooking it through analog cable. changing btwn PC and PS3 is very easy to do..all needed to do is by pressing the source button below the lcd smile.gif

hmmm... i charge using pc for the 1st time, actually for about 2-3 hour before someone of the PC. then I never touch my sixaxis until yersterday afternoon. then try play with it, I unplug the USB and hit the HOME(PS) button. the indicator blinking fast for few second then dead. It look like my sixaxis battery empty...right? but still can be use if the usb cable attached. I don't have 2nd controller to try and make confirmation wheather my sixaxis is faulty or not. Anybody from Melaka can help me here? wanna check with bernard but so far la, the travel cost can afford to buy new DS3...huhuhuhu

BTW, when sixaxis charging.. the light indicator with flashing slowly right until it fully charge, right? how come my sixaxis when charging, the indicator blinking slow for a few second then stop? arghh... takkan baru beli dah rosak???

1 more thing... if I leave the controller idle, it will of by itself right? then to on it just push the home button again... is it automatically connect to console and boleh continue playing or need to off the console any sync again. I just face another problem that is I need to reboot my PS3 to reconnect the controller. It is becoz if only push the HOME button, the indicator keep blinking fast. and then off without connected.... huhuhu. macam2 problem yg aku hadapi nih....

@ravemaster, i added you pict to the 1st post. you play using headphones? how about volume control? your headphones have volume adjuster?

@Cool_Knights, your controller is really not behaving normally. have you tried what monyetbesi suggested?

turn off the controller. on the back there is a pin hole use a paper clip and hold it for 5-10 seconds. then attactch the usb cable and press the PS/HOME button.

Hey guys, I'm planning to get a PS3 on chinese new year and now my mom wants to get a LCD TV. Just wonder which would be better? She's getting a 32" either from Samsung or Sharp Aquos. The Sharp Aquos has 100hz feature which will cost only about RM3499 if not mistaken. Mainly to be used on the future PS3 biggrin.gif

wow thanks for the lovely information that able to purchase at Sri Computer.

What is the name for the things when u 1 2 get at Sri Computer? u know la staff there abit.....
---------
Anyway, since this is Technical thread...i would like to ask some question.

1) Does 40GB and 80GB have technology or differences (besides the card reader and the 4 USB) since 80GB is the latest...

2) Any heat problems for PS3 ( went to 1-U the guy mentione can play only 2 hours top then have to rest the system?? )

3) Only 80GB able to play backward "Original" PS and PS2 games? not for 40GB?

4) Is 40GB outdated or stop production from Sony..heard Engineers at Sony is implementing better feature in latest PS3...

Thanks

sure thing..the Y-cable is called AUDIO FEMALE TO 2 RCA priced at RM10.00,
while the connector is called 2RCA JACK-2RCA GOLD priced at RM8.00 (not RM7.00 as i stated earlier, sorry for the confusion)

if you are going to Sri Computer, just go inside and you can see many boxes selling rj45 cables and network splitter, opposite of the boxes are boxes for audio cables and Y-cable is located on the top shelve.

the connector is on the last part on the long hallway (near the lift) nearby the headphones area. it is located in one of the boxes on the bottom shelve nod.gif
(if you are from the lift, enter Sri Computer area, turn left and on the last boxes on the right is the connector)

mine is the old one, ps3 60gb ntsc-j that currently stopped production. the latest versions of ps3 are 40gb & 80gb. i suggest if you are planning to buy a ps3, just buy the 40gb version since it is cheaper and the ps3 hard disk can be upgraded regardless of the versions that you have.

i guess the only 60gb or the 80gb versions that are worthy to me is the ntsc u/c or pal regions since you can play english versions of ps2 games (well if u understood Japanese, then the ntsc-j is worthy too tongue.gif). ps2 games are currently region protected and you need the right console to play the right games. but if you are not into ps2 backward compatibility, the 40gb is again the recommended version. ps3 games are currently region free, so you can buy any versions of ps3 that you liked. mostly here sell the asian version. eitherway, all ps3 have great picture quality for games and support most HD content too rclxms.gif

this is my personal view only, the are other masters here that can help you in finding you right versions of ps3 smile.gif (the 1st post of this thread is a good read and give great guide too)

about the fake controller also i am not so sure sweat.gif icon_question.gif

yeah, 40gb and 80gb are both the latest one..the 40gb will be able to play all games (Japanese, US and PAL) since ps3 games are not region protected.. Movies and PS2 games are however region protected. you can refer this link here to check the region coding of movies -->> http://bluray.lindsite.dk/

haha spending hard earn money ma tongue.gif haha at first plan to get CPU to play crysis hehe then PC things alwiz have to upgrade wasting money..so stick back to PS3 lo...although playing original games is exp so have to think what games i love to play and whether is it worth of getting the console hehe dont 1 2 regret in long term just like my psp collecting dust with untouch (rarely) UMD's...

Nevertheless, i have 70% what i what already..now is choosing which game and which shop to get hehe. Hope "they" shop onwers" have all the Y-connector...HDMI-->DVI cables to purchase at their shop too so hassle free no need to travel from 1 destination to another..smile.gif

@ravemaster

wow thanks for the lovely information that able to purchase at Sri Computer.

Thanks
*
1. 40GB is using 65nm processor and 80GB is using 90nm technology processor. 65nm is latest and use less power consumption

2. No heat problem for 40GB but heat problems in 80GB

3. 80GB only can play NTSC/J Original PS2 games but not all games supported. Please check asia.playstation.com website for compatible games list

4. 40GB just launched on 11/11/2007 while 80GB launched in August 2007, if you wanna wait, better don buy, waiting will not end up buying anything you wan today

Why would you use Linux for gaming, when PS3 itself is a game console. hmm.gif

IMO we don't need much CPU/graphic power for the Linux. That said, I don't actually need Linux on PS3. tongue.gif laugh.gif

I bought PS3 mainly for BD, cheapest and the best BD player, with the firmware easy to be updated too .. Game is a plus... thumbup.gif

@terencetoo, DVI is the best for quality although some LCDs also do a great job with component input.

DS3 have vibration (for games that support it), heavier and consumes more battery power than a 6axis.

You get the LAN cables, cut at each ends near the connector jack, throw away the cable, and put them each at the ethernet ports on your PS3 and the router. Voila!

LOL.. I'm so bored. laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

First make sure your wireless router/modem is on.

Go to Network, select Network Setup, select Wireless, select Automatic, if your router has any encryption key, type it in, leave everything by default, and finish by doing the network test.

It's kind of easy really. Hope that helps. wink.gif

i or p is done by hardware
i=interlace
p=progressive

1080 is the vertical resolution and horizontal might differs from 1 screen to another depending on your hardware

your external storage devices must be formatted with FAT32 not NTFS.

Just use your pendrive or external HDD la... If want can copy to your PS3's internal...

Not just AVI files (DiVX), WMV, VOB or MP4 with 720p/1080p HD content (h264) also can...  nod.gif

Even "ahem2" movie...  laugh.gif

if the encoding is normal, then it should be smooth playing in PS3
if the conversion is jerky, no matter how high end your PC/Mac or console is, it will still jerk

When i connect my ps3 to 480i and 576i its working fine which was my current setting now but when i connect to 480p 576p 720p and 1080i that television tell me there is no signal..So i am wondering is ps3 not support thos resolution or do i need to setting at my tv or ps3....because 576i x cantik lah

PS3 OS are stored in the NAND chips and not the HDD so upgrading HDD will not affect much on PS3 stability I think smile.gif.. I've upgraded mine to 250GB a few weeks ago and the screws were easily stripped.. Make sure you use the correct size of screwdriver or have a plier nearby. I ended up using pliers to remove the screws sweat.gif

Whenever you change to any input on your tv, hold the power button for a few seconds until you hear a beep sound and let it go. PS3 will detect the new input and configure it back.

h264 yes. But it's the MKV header that's PS3 cannot read. So you need to demux the MKV, and remux it back to MP4.

The h264 content will maintain the same, no conversion done. Easy say, like changing your cloth la... laugh.gif

The tutorial how to do that is on the first page, third post I think...

The mkv file must use either AC3 or DTS (will be auto transcoded to AC3) audio not AAC. What the remux process does is, taking out the audio and video from the mkv container and put them into the vob container which PS3 supports.

For 1080p source the whole video will be trancoded into MPEG2 codec and the final file size will be bigger but the picture quality remains. For instance an 8GB of 1080p source will be 10GB after the transcoding process and it will take a while, depends how powerful your PC is.

The best part is all the vob files regardless the size can be transferred to PS3 HDD via network. So don't need to burn into a DVDR or split those big files to fit into those FAT32 external devices which have 4GB size limitation.

There is only one way to change PS3 HDD and I'm sure all guides talk about the same procedure. This is the shortest video that I can find on teh intarwebs:

The PS3 will format the HDD automatically. If you straightaway upgrade your HDD after purchasing your PS3, then there is no need to do the backup function of files/gamesaves/videos/music from the old HDD. Just pop in the new HDD, format it using the PS3, and if you want to use linux, just repartition it using the PS3 OS before transferring any new files to the new HDD as the repartitioning process wipes all data.

Added on January 9, 2008, 12:52 pmDont worry about the folder structure, they will be autogenerated by PS3 nod.gif

We are putting in trailers / demos and downloaded games

haha now i am confused rclxub.gif

Can an external harddisk connected to PS3 USB serve the same purposes as the internal harddisk?

If yes, do I still need to upgrade my internal harddisk to bigger capacity?

Are you sure rx that you can download any demo from PSN Store directly to your external storage device connected to PS3? I really doubt so.

only 15mins mkv remuxing to vob needed and then transfer it to PS3 HDD and walaa....h264 + ac3 5.1 audio runnnig smoothly on your PS3. the only setback is you can't FF/RW the HD movie just PAUSE and if you stop it in the middle you can't continue, you must watch it from the beginning. Why? I don't know...I always watch a movie from start to finish and the hit PAUSE button just to take a leak.

I'm using DI-524 as well.. I think you should change your modem to bridge mode and let the 524 to do the PPPOE dialling. By doing that, you should get a Type 2 at least.. If you really want a Type 1 connection, set your modem to bridge mode, connect your PS3 directly to the modem and set the PS3 to do the PPPOE dialling.

Yes, sixaxis, you spelled it right. In fact, you can spell it backward, and still get it right! laugh.gif

Look for it in the trading thread, you should find it there I think.

There's a new controller now with DualShock(R)3.

-Regarding the power issue..Is advisable to use external 4 port usb converter and hock up with 1 2.5" 160GB to your PS3?

-Will this setup will effect the power draw from the outlet or console?

- Can PS3 play original DVD movies? or any VCD movies?

it should be fine to plug hub to and connect to your HDD

it should sufficient to draw the power, else your HDD will not power up

you can play DVD movies without problems, VCDs? not recommended...not nice on display laugh.gif

everyone around me ask me to get white..
so until the day of purchase in front of the shop i also debating myself..
until i ask the owner he said.. only black available.. white finish..
hehe guess im destined.. to black.
its sexy...

but of coz that shop owner thought i was going to ask for white..
he gave me lots bullshit saying white easy dirty.. people all complaining and dont want white color..

any 2.5" SATA HDD will suit your PS3
no worries unless you got a spoil unit laugh.gif

quality? once you got Blu-Ray movie, you don't even want to watch DVD movies laugh.gif

unless you are not using HD for your PS3

I'm using Full-HD 1080p so anything below that resolution, it sux laugh.gif

haha let me answer since i just upgrade my harddisk to 160GB. very easy

Running smoothly now. no problem at all

Please refer to this guide HERE

I think general rule of thumb is

NOTEBOOK 2.5 inch HDD
SATA ANY SIZE
RPM 5400RPM (Same as the PS3's original HDD)

A man always use their measurements in inch la wei, not mm...  laugh.gif

For those looking for BDs, better buy from Amazon.com, cheaper... And when there's BOGO, even cheaper, you can get 2 for less than RM130 (standard shipping)...  nod.gif
