can PS3 support any computer media format such as mkv and h.264? Means are downloaded mkv(h.264) playable in PS3? How about others avi divx xvid?

i'm thinking to get ps3. i'm not really a gamer, but I'm crazy about HD contents.. So PS3 would mainly be a Blu-ray player to me.. worth it? Anyone using the remote control like those DVD ones? How much is it selling?
