Gars

For this thread I will only show gars that are suitable for the normal aquaria.

Genus Atractosteus
Atractosteus tropicus—Tropical Gar- Maximum Size of 1.5M but reportedly smaller in aquaria
Very rare

Genus Lepisosteus
Lepisosteus oculatus—Spotted Gar- Mazimum size of 3ft
Long snout and spots. Spots to a higher degree towards the posterior of its body. Easily mistaken for Florida spotted gar.
Lepisosteus platostomus—Shortnose Gar
The shortnosed gar can be identified by its short snout, and by the lack of teeth rows in the upper jaw like the alligator gar, and the lack of spots on its body.
Lepisosteus platyrhincus—Florida Gar- Mazimum size of 3ft but reports say world record is at 132cm
A highly varied species of gar. Has more spots on its body and a shorter snout than many other gars. Easily mistaken for spotted gar.

Chitala Chitala: Rare and endangered...not likely to be readily available to the hobby, yet the scientific name is also used to describe the Clown Knife
Chitala Blanci: Also known as the Royal Knife
Chitala Lopis: Also known as the Giant Knife or Giant Mekong Knife
Notopterus Notopterus: Also known as the Asian Featherfin, Asian Black Knife, or Bronze Knife

African Lungfish
There are 4 different species of African lungfish however the most common species to be found in the aquarium trade is
Protopterus annectens-Most common
Protopterus aethiopicus
Protopterus amphibius
Protopterus dolloi

Protopterus annectens

African lungfishes are easy to keep if you can dedicate a large aquarium to specimens since they accept a broad range of water values. They should preferable be kept in neutral to slightly acidic water.They eat anything that is offered to them including dry food. (You might have to train them before they accept dry food.) If a food source is too large to fit in their mouth they eat pieces out of it, this includes other larger living fishes. So don't assume that a fish is safe with your African lungfish just because it is too big to fit in its mouth.

South American Lungfish-Lepidosiren paradoxa.

The South American lungfish grows to be 1.2 m / 4 feet. South American lungfish can be kept in aquarium in the same way as other lungfishes.

They require a large aquarium which shouldn't house any other fishes due to their predatory and aggressive nature. The water should be neutral to slightly acidic. They accept any meaty food and you might be able to get them to accept dry food. Be sure to feed a diverse diet containing fish, crayfish, shrimp, and earth worms

There are no known successful breeding of South American lungfish in aquarium. They spawn during the rainy season and the male builds a nest in which the eggs are deposited. The male then guard the eggs and the young against other predators, egg eaters etc. The fry spend their first 6-8 weeks hanging from vegetation using adhesive glands. These glands are not present in older fishes.

Australian Lungfish-Neoceratodus forsteri

They have very small eyes and a long thick body which is covered in large scales. They are usually olive-green to brown with dark spots on the sides. The species is CITES protected but there are licensed breeders from which they can be bought. They grow upto 5ft/1.5m and weigh over 40kg. The Australian lungfish has unlike other lungfish only one lung.

Australian lungfish should when kept in aquarium be kept alone in a large aquarium with a neutral to slightly acidic water. They will eat anything meaty and their natural diet consists of frogs, tadpoles, small fishes, snails, shrimp and also vegetable parts. They detect prey by using their sense of smell and detecting electrical impulses.There are no reports of successful breedings in aquariums. They spawn during the night and it takes the fry 3 weeks to hatch. The fry grows slowly.

There also exist a few albino specimens of this fish. Those are however very rare and extremely expensive.

Also what type of primitve fish specimens we can find there.
easier to keep track on where to buy them when some of us got an empty tank to fill in

Ive been wondering, how come some endlicheri got pale almost like albino, and some very dark?

Also, how to tell the difference between endlicheri endlicheri and endlicheri congicus?

thanx, i'm not sure bout the difference, the white one used to hav darker stripes which my friend said this species do hav camouflage effect

Maybe true. Cuz mine also getting darker now. See how different they are before :

as far as i know all the congicus is WC (wild caught).
Congicus is more bigger than endlicheri..the stripe also different..

Hey just wondering, can a fish die of over feeding?

Coz my channa bleheri kinda gulped quite a big feeder fish for its own size, looks like its stomach gonna explode.

Hikari Turtle Sticks, Tropical BioRept W, Sega Sinking Pellet, Sanyu Hercar Wafer, Superworms (usually leftover from my arowana), Frozen bloodwroms, Hikari Massivore Delite (intended for bichirs, but Fly takes it as well).

Generally, this guy would chew on almost anything. But he never hurts live fish, really good boy. I'm planning to get him a pond, since he's getting big now.

I really need to remove my PVCs. Pity me. Cant see my royal and Fire

but i read its because of their spine deformation that you will get this type of variation, and most of them are prone to die young.
and you can easily see them in display tank in singapore lfs.

They are actually produced this way. The LFS boss told me that they were line breed and genetically enhance to be short body. You can get easily from Singapore fish shop.

need help.
saw my oscar is pooping white stringy poops.
thinking she might have some kind of internal infection or worst, hex.
but she is still eating and not ludah balik, so maybe not hex kot.
any suitable and easy treatment?

Any change in ur oscar's diet? Coz last time my aro had the same stringy poops and sometimes brownish liquid come out. Asked my friend he said most probably constipation, and maybe due to I changed its diet from just crickets to prawns, feeder fish, centipedes, etc. Just for variety.

So I just let the fella starve a bit, then started giving its normal diet for a while then all okay.

hurm, probably due to the feeding of leftovers mealworms then.
i wonder if those LFS will let me just buy 2-3 piece of mealworms only lol, instead of a capfull of them.
my T's only eat 2 pieces per week, rest have to be flushed into my oscar tank..

ok, will try your method, also dose a few cheap medications into the water itself yesterday. no more stringy poop so far.

I dont know much about Melasoma but some snakehead species are mouth brooders, and will care for their young. I just nampak diorang bwk anak² n quickly grab them both..

Yeah that was one big filter box. For normal aquarium we usually use small box like this one only :


Personally i havent been using top filter for long time, since changing to sump filter. But i think, to prevent from flooding outside of aquarium, u can provide a DIY padding tank to put ur top filter on. So the overflown water will go into the padding tank, with a tube back to ur aquarium.

And lapik with bio balls , topped with foams (sounds like burger to me)
How to salur the water back to the tank?
How heavy will the filter be?
Mine just normal 4ft with two short braces.

any idea that the pump don supply air in the water?
the motor is working but juz no idea y no air pump in
tried blow n raise the pump higher but stil no good

A small thing u need to turn/switch. Horizontal lets the air thru, vertical blocks the air. See the pic (lucky that i still have 2 units unused )

One more thing is, u need to put the other end of the air pump above the water surface. Good luck.

Damn nice My fren caught a pic in Sultan Kelantan's pond few weeks ago. His Royalty keeps Arapaima Gigas as well

saw some arapaima gigas in a restaurant at melaka last month..
biggest one is almost 2 meter.. the owner kept those giants in quite a small pond..
