Vacuuming job is a lot of pain, thats why i shift to bare based tank. Now still on experiment mode : tile / slate base. I tried 2 types of tiles, and turns out, they give quite different effects.

1) Bare base (aquarium-glass base, clear white and slippery)

2) Brown Rough-surfaced tile base (still in experimenting mode, so i just put a few pieces, and didnt cut them in aquarium shape yet)

Current observation :

Rough-surfaced tiles (#2) seems better, in term of comfort, imaging and and overall looks. But i think brown base will make bichirs lose their coloration. So i'll not stick to this option, for this time.

3) Black + dark red tile base. The material quite slippery, but better than glass. Currently still experimenting on this biggrin.gif

I saw ppl used red and black.
It boosts the colorations and markings.
I myself used black and red soil.
WC weekly, and looking for better filter other than canister and sump.
Anyone has better ideas? I'm thinking of 4 tier top filter but quite heavy, and fear my 4ft will kapoot

Yeah now experimenting on black + dark red coloured tile.

Better filtration than cannister & sump, is there any? 4 tier top filter, u have picture of it? If its too heavy then might be quite risky to put on top of aquarium hood / lid. For now, i'll stick to sump filter + weekly WC.

So as promised, i just snapped few pics of my aquarium base's third choice

(3) Black + Dark Red, smooth surfaced tile (still experimenting, so still didnt cut the tile in aquarium shape, yet). Images :

Current Observation :

3rd option seems to be the best by far, for few reasons :

a) Comfort. Its better than bare glass, which is too slippery for bichirs. Its proven for the 1st hour of observation, as both of my bichirs (Endi & Ornate) tend to choose more on tiled surface than glass.
b) Coloration. Dark and Red colour was said to boost most fish's colour, especially bottom dwellers like Bichirs. Thats why, white base is not good an option.
c) Looks. This option better than glass, in term of its colour and solidness. Solid-colour surface is way better than glass. It even reflects the moving currents of water in the tank (especially when the lights on). Very nice to see that biggrin.gif

If you use tile, also need to scrap the tiles once or while.
Or it'll gives polys kegatalan at the bottom.

cant find the filter pictures. It's like regular top filter.
Just have 3 or 4 tiers. Each tier has one type of media.
Quite heavy.

I read canister is not fit for heavy carnivorous fish. Bio load too much to handle.

Few weeks back, i saw Taobao is selling alot.
Tempted to get two units ( birchir and oscar tanks).
Hard to find locally.

Issue: my 4ft is the regular type, ceramic rings are very heavy...
Haizz..

Is it because of algae or lumut? Its still slippery and shiny material, so i think wont collect much algaes, except the rough bottom side. Still need scratching job once a while, anyways sweat.gif

I have had enough experience with sands or soil substrate, later will use those white sands in turtle pond.

I guess the very long top filter one, right? Hows ur aquarium like? Do u plan to put the filter on top of the hood? I think the most fragile part is the glass itself. If it has enough thickness and firm frame, should be ok.

Jangkitan i dont know much, just read from a forumer.
Mine is metal rack with two4 ft ( top and bottom).
I think sump is not possible, coz no space. canister not big enough.
If is really big, my wallet also cant support.
If there's somebody who knows how to attach a roof for my rack, then maybe can have a roof that support the heavy filters.
But hb sure tak bagi. Pek Cheh yawn.gif

Wow.. 1st time i heard of this type of filtration system. The best in the world.. just by knowing that fact, makes me very happy indeed! biggrin.gif
But.. dont u realize that the kind of filtration is supposed to cover a HUGE amount of water, as in a pond? (About 2000 gallons). Or maybe u intend to find a smaller filter set, but with the same filtration system.

There is aquarium version. 3ft or 4ft.
RMB160+ each.

No matter what base, also need to vacuum clean.
If tiles or bare, just scrap the slime. For me, soil is vacuum

alright. thanx for the info guys and girls.
well, looks like i have to vacumm them then since i need to use gravel due to my fishes like to play with it.

Why dont you guys use a sump tank full load(normal filter media..) + with high flowrate cannister filter(inside just use a bit of floss) with attached house water filter...?
Those house water filter pads can filter up to 0.5microns...and believe me...they look really crystal clear, donwside of it, you need to get a bigger flowrate power head and every week or a few days need to change the filter pads.

something like this
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

i mean you need a higher/bigger/powerful cannister filter since lower flow rate cannister filter will not be enough,
due to the filter pad will quickly be clog up, like my case, after using 0.5 microns filter pad, water damn crystal clear,
no smell, but after a day, the water output had been reduce significantly, from air pancut, to air titik titik.. lol

or you could try to use lesser micro filter pad, now im using a new one, just bought it just now. will update later.

that shop quite expensive. in ipoh, there used to be Nam Hoi, the one near taman song choon, much much better, but now, run by his wife, charge very expensive already.

the next one would be near jalan bendahara, near sri maju, so far now there is the best in ipoh, in terms of fish variety and price, IMO

I like the idea that it gives u crystal clear water condition, but personally i think that kind of filtration is too much hassle, and quite hard to maintain. Weekly filter pads change is acceptable, but if once everyday (or even every other day), then its probably not for me. Thanks for the video provided, it helps to grasp the whole idea.

New way of filtration for me, has its own pro and contra there. Its amazing how u 1st discover the idea thumbup.gif

i cant take credit for it though, since i just upgraded the design and
its use purpose to suit my need from planted tank community and i found out it really works for my oscar fish tank.

btw, already 2 days using new loose filter pads, so far so good, water is clearer. guess will see if it last at least a week.
will update with pictures of the filter pads later after it started become clogged
